LUDIC VILLAGE LUDIC VILLAGE is situated in the slums of Hlaing Tharyar, a suburban industrial zone in Myanmar suscepble to floods. In response to a grave circumstance, the project unintuively seeks to create environment of play in which residents possess freedom and agency to construct spaces for living and learning. LUDIC VILLAGE is designed as a series of massive bamboo structures inspired by local scaffolding techniques. They form the spaal boundaries of the village within which spaces are almost enrely transformable with an extensive kit-of-parts for self-building within the structure.

MERCANTILE ECO-SYSTEM The project invesgates the potenal of revitalizing post-modernist complexes in Kreta Ayer as enterprise incubators, inspired by the historical symbioc economic arrangement and spaal organizaon of shophouses in the area. The thesis re-designs ownership structure in exisng strata-tled complexes to facilitate the formaon of resilient mercanle eco-systems that was once present in Kreta Ayer, thereby extending the buildings’ lifespan. Adapng ideas from Open Building (Habraken, 1961) and the former shophouse economic arrangement, the project demonstrates how the spao-mercanle relaonship can be reinterpreted programmacally in these declining post-modernist complexes. The podiums of the complexes are re-purposed as a new typology: co-retailing and co-working spaces that serve as enterprise incubators, intensely shared by complementary tenants (emerging small local enterprises). The chosen site for demonstraon is People’s Park, the historical mercanle nucleus of Kreta Ayer.

A VERTICAL HUTONG With the end of China's dynasc era, social straficaon in China vaporized and gave way to an organic division of the tradional courtyard houses (siheyuan) among the urban dwellers. The tradional order of the hutongs (alleys formed by lines of siheyuan) disintegrated, yet the disncve culture of ‘Old Beijing’ was birthed: interweaving of alleys, sharing of courtyard compounds, infiltraon of commercial spaces, informal expansion of dwellings with cheap available material. The hutongs in its early modern years was an intriguing vernacular labyrinth, evolved organically through the way of life and needs of the urban dwellers. As part of the studio agenda to ‘design in architectural secons’, the project explores the idea of a ‘vercal hutong’, translang spaal chacteriscs of the hutong fabric into an industrial-community typology.

The house is composed of a central courtyard enclosed by building blocks on four sides, accommodang mul-generaonal living. Modern Beijingʼs populaon boom has turned the siheyuan into housing com -plexes subdivided for mulple households with courtyards colonised by informal expansion

ARCHAEOLOGY Once a dairy farm and village, the Wallace Centre and its vicinity retains man-made relics from the past that are forgoen and go unnoced easily in this nature park seng. Celebrang the value of these remnants, the proposed eco-lodge acts as an archive and prompt users to browse the artefacts on site. Vercal frame elements are set up in a rhythm that breaks and changes at specific posions to draw aenon of users to the artefacts of archeological interest and to accommodate different programmes of the lodge

FOUNDER’S MEMORIAL 2.0 The project explores a subversive narrave as an alternave proposal for the Founder’s Memorial: a covert commemoraon of the submerged figure Sir Stamford Raffles in founding the modern civilisaon. Taking cue from conspiracy theories revolving around Raffles and inspiraon from primive forms, the intervenon is a series of stone-like towers that echoes the pentagram formaon of early establishments of Raffles upon his arrival (the Raffles Statue, Raffles House, Raffles instuion, Raffles Library and the Civic district). As opposed to the shortlisted design which presents the memorial as a recreaonal desnaon, the towers adopt a prey serious take in the commemoraon: stacks of auditoriums, research centres, seminar rooms linked by a connuous winding stairway, in response to the naon’s pride on progress and global standing.
