ince ancient times, the pearl has been a symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest known gem, and for centuries it was considered the most valuable. Pearls have been considered ideal wedding gifts because they symbolize purity and innocence. In the Rigveda, an ancient Hindu book dating back to 1000 B.C. Krishna, the preserver, brought forth pearls from the depths of the sea to give to his daughter on her wedding day, thus started the tradition of giving pearls to the bride. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, pearls were at the height of wedding fashion with royal weddings in the French House of Burgundy taking place in a “sea of pearls. Everyone from the bride to her male guests was adorned in glowing pearls. Today, the tradition of bestowing pearls upon the bride continues. Often the father of the bride or the groom gives the gift of pearls which symbolise love, virtue, spirituality and prosperity. Many brides give their bridesmaids pearl necklaces, bracelets or earrings too.

Pearls are a popular choice for wedding jewellery as the luster of pearls visually goes very well with the sheen of silk or satin wedding gowns and creates a very classic look that will stand the test of time. Pearls are the timeless classics of every woman’s jewellery collection. A girl’s first pearl is often her first piece of jewellery and becomes the foundation of her jewellery wardrobe as she matures. A woman’s pearls then become a symbol of her growth into adulthood as well as her new role with a family of her own. This is why pearls are so appropriate for the bride and her entire wedding party. Choosing pearls for a wedding party is a loving task. You’ll need to think about the overall wedding style as well as the needs of the wedding party. Factors such as pearl size, colour and necklace lengths all come into play. Will it be held in a cathedral or on a beach? Will the ceremony be very traditional and formal or casual? The bride and her party’s jewellery are best when matched to the style of the wedding. For more formal weddings, choose larger, rounder white pearls. Traditional single, double and triple strands with matched bracelets and stud earrings will be appropriate. For casual and non-traditional weddings, jewellery can incorporate more colours and design elements. Look for colours to match the bridal party’s dresses and theme. The bride herself should have the largest and best pearls for her wedding day. Her necklace should reflect her personal style as well as her wedding. We generally suggest that the size of the pearls should be relative to her frame; the starting pearl size is in the six to seven millimetre range for an average sized bride - at approximately 5’5” tall and weighing about 60 kilograms. Then, size up or down depending on the wearer. Also, take into account the bride’s age. As a woman matures, larger pearls are more appropriate. hose of you who have followed Engaged from the very start (twenty-four issues ago!), will remember that in our first issue we did a list of tips for having an environmentally-friendly wedding. Well, that was more than two years ago now and we thought it about time that we updated the list. So here it is! If you have any other great tips, email them to us (info@ engaged.co.nz) and we’ll put them on the website!

Tips for a more environmentally-friendly wedding
Wedding Magazines •
Cut down on paper usage by reading online magazine such as Engaged.
•
Recycle your old paper magazines by passing them on to other brides.
•
Buy local magazines - they haven’t been flown half way across the world and they also advertise local businesses (which is where you should be trying to source everything from).
25
engaged
Clothing •
Buy or use a second-hand dress. www.weddings.co.nz have a substantial list of pre-loved gowns for sale. These can be altered to suit your body shape or personal style if necessary.
•
Recycle your dress by listing it for sale after your wedding.
•
Consider renting a dress and/or your bridesmaids’ dresses. The groom’s and groomsmen’s suits can be hired at any number of great suit hire places, including Working Style, Thomson’s Suits and Kingsway Menswear.
•
•
When buying your dress or bridesmaids’ dresses, choose dresses that can be worn again. Think about the fabric used in your wedding dress – organic silk, cotton, hemp or blends of these fabrics are now available.
Researchers at England’s Sheffield Hallam University have designed an eco-friendly wedding dress that can be dissolved in water. But wait, there’s more! The dress doesn’t dissolve completely, but rather transforms into five different fashion garments. The only hitch is that the dress will probably dissolve if you get caught in the rain on your wedding day.... ah well, the price of being green!
Jewellery and Accessories •
Borrow accessories to go with your dress and/or your bridesmaids’ dresses.

26
•
Reuse an old piece of family jewellery, either by using it as it is or having the piece reworked.
•
Make sure your diamonds are ethically mined – if in doubt, ask your jeweller.
•
Consider using New Zealand-mined gold and silver.
•
If thinking about a platinum ring, search for recycled platinum.
Flowers •
Use flowers from your own or a friend or family member’s garden.
•
Make sure the flowers you use are seasonal and look for locally-grown, pesticide-free flowers. Flowers outside of season will need to be shipped from overseas.
•
Think about using plants as table or reception venue decorations. These can be replanted later.
•
Re-use ceremony flowers at the reception.
•
Consider a flower-free bouquet – check out Boutique Bloom’s ribbon flowers or consider carrying a parasol.
Stationery •
Use 100% recycled paper.
•
Or use paper made from bamboo or hemp. materials are natural and sustainable.

•
Investigate the use of printers that use soy or vegetablebased ink.
•
Use online wedding invitations, such as those offered by Paperless Wedding (www.paperlesswedding.co.nz). You can set up website so the invites, RSVPs and other information can all be provided online.
•
If posting your invites, use postcards for RSVPs. This saves on the extra paper used for envelopes. Or ask your guests to RSVP by phone or email.
•
Work out if you really need an Order of Service. If you decide that you do, provide a recycling bin at the ceremony so guests can recycle any order of service programs. Limit the programs to one per couple if possible.
•
Email your thank you cards.
Favours •
Use local-made products to cut down on air or transport miles and to support local industry.
•
Let guests know you have donated to a charity on their behalf instead of giving them favours.
•
Give your guests a seedling to plant in their garden.
Confetti •
engaged
Consider alternatives to paper confetti: flower petals or bird seed look great. Just make sure your seed is native
28
plant seed – the introduction of non-native or invasive plants can upset the environment! •
Have someone release butterflies or doves instead of throwing confetti.
•
If you are using bubbles, use home-made bubbles, as this cuts down on the plastic packaging required for store bought bubbles.
Photography •
Luckily, most of today’s photographers will use digital cameras rather than having to chemically process and print photos.
•
Arrange for your photographer to put the pictures on the internet and request that your friends and family only download and print what they need.
Venue •
Limit the number of guests. A smaller ceremony and reception will use fewer resources (stationery, food, transport, and so on).
•
Have your ceremony and reception venues near each other to limit travel required.
•
Use local venues to support local businesses.
•
Choose a venue that supports environmentally-friendly practices.
29
engaged
Food •
When choosing your food, make sure it is made of local, in-season produce if possible. This includes tea, coffee, your cake and alcohol! We have some of the best ingredients grown right here in New Zealand so use them!
•
Also choose organic ingredients where feasible.
•
Think about the time of day your wedding feast will be served: could you limit your food to canapés instead of a fully-fledged buffet (which often has more wastage)?
•
Ask your caterer to donate any extra food to a local food bank and to compost any food waste.
•
Think about those serving dishes and plates: crockery and cutlery that can be washed are more environmentally friendly than disposable plates and cutlery. If you do have to use disposable plates, look out for plates made from corn starch, potato or other plant fibre.
•
Emphasize to your caterers and the reception staff that everything that can be recycled needs to be recycled.
Transport •
Encourage guests to purchase carbon credits if they are flying. Or do it for them.
•
Suggest guests car pool to, from, and between the venues or let guests know about Green Cabs, who use hybrid cars. Alternatively you may like to hire a bus to transport guests between venues.
engaged
30
•
Arrive at the ceremony the old fashioned way: use a horse and carriage!
Gifts •
Think about if you really need gifts: don’t list items you don’t need on your gift registry.
•
If adding appliances to your gift wish list, research which brands or items have the least environmental impact.
•
You may like to make a donation to an environmental or charitable organisation one of your gift registry items.
•
Ask guests to wrap gifts in recycled paper or use gift bags (which can be recycled by you).
Honeymoon •
Consider honeymooning locally. Not only does it support local businesses but it cuts down on travel miles.
•
If flying, buy carbon credits to offset your flight.

Belles Words by Isaac De Reus
On numerous visits to Christchurch, we’ve wistfully looked at the elegant architecture, tussocky hills, and sweeping beaches and talked about how cool it’d be to shoot there. After the Auckland Bride Parade, we tentatively suggested a similar shoot in Christchurch, to see what the interest would be. Within about 3 hours of the thread going up on the forums, we had reached our capacity of brides wanting to be involved – and it was all on.

Cue weeks of location research, negotiations with the council, and the rigmarole of trying to get onto a plane with most of a studio in your checked luggage and nearly 20kgs of carry-on cameras & lenses each. The madness continued once we arrived in Christchurch – location checking at first light, collecting a petrol generator at 8am on a Saturday morning, and getting everything set up for a very busy day. Down at our first location, we met up with local Christchurch photographer Delphine – who was fantastic to shoot with, keeping everyone smiling with her fantastic French accent & fun antics. It was great to see the girls back in their dresses, looking amazing – and luckily, it wasn’t too cold indoors. The light was great, and we captured some really beautiful shots. The buildings, and landscape, are just so different to what we’ve got up North. The final part of the day was when it got cold. Really, really cold. We had scoped out a perfect spot on the Port Hills, with a suitably sketchy rock to stand on – framed against the sky. When we arrived, however, there had been some kind of accident – and we had a 30 minute delay while the rescue helicopter arrived & ferried the patient off. The wind picked up, the Police let us into the area, and we raced through some group & individual shots; Amber was shooting while I did my best to hold the kite-like softbox in one place without flying over the cliff. Coupled with balancing a precarious generator, cords, and the wind chill, it was a testing environment to shoot in. The girls were fantastic though – cheering each other on as they took their turns on the rock, against what was rapidly

becoming an epic sunset. It was so cool to see that no-one had their shoot and rushed back to the shelter of the cars – they all stayed and supported one another. Finally, as we lost the last of the light and sunset quickly became night, we called it a wrap. Everyone said their goodbyes & made a beeline for their respective hot showers. We had a lovely dinner out in town with a couple of the girls, and then it was back on the 8am flight to Auckland first thing the next morning. It was great to meet a bunch of new people, and catch up with some familiar faces too. As we were out & about scouting locations for this Bride Parade shoot, we also came up with a heap of new ideas… roll on next year! Isaac De Reus
