A
new year is upon us, and for many of you that means it’s your wedding year! For others, it means the countdown continues…and what a wonderful thing to count down to! So, how many of you make ‘bridal New Year’s resolutions’? We came up with a few to help you out…

Hair & Beauty Everyone wants to look their best on their big day. Just think of those photographs recording just how gorgeous you are and try some of these resolutions: • I resolve to stop biting my nails and treat myself to regular manicures. Regular manicures keep your finger nails and hands in tip-top shape, very important for showing off your ring! • I resolve to treat my feet to regular pedicures. Although your feet don’t get as much attention in wedding photos, slipping prettily painted toenails into your wedding shoes or a pair of honeymoon jandals is an exquisite sensation. • I resolve to protect my skin from the sun. Using sun block is ohso-important in New Zealand’s climate. We face one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world and nothing looks worse than crispy fried skin! Investigate self-tanning options and protect that beautiful skin of yours or celebrate the pale! • I resolve to look after my face. The proper cleanser, toner, moisturiser, exfoliater and regular facials can make your face glow. Make it a priority to work out what works for you! • I resolve to treat my hair with care. Every now and then give your hair a rest from the GHDs and, when you are using them, make sure you use a heat protecting product. Your hair will also love regular conditioning treatments. Get glossy!

Health & Diet • I resolve to set aside some exercise time every week. If you can manage every day, then that’s great! Exercise makes you feel fantastic for a number of reasons – you generally lose weight, your heart and lung health improves, your hormones can balance, your endorphins get moving and you get that beautiful glow in your cheeks! • I resolve to nourish my body with good, healthy food. Our bodies tend to thrive with a balanced diet of fruit and vegetables, good sources of protein and wholemeal carbohydrates. Treat your body well by giving it the things it needs to perform at its best and not cluttering it with junk food – it will thank you!
Our Environment • I resolve to think about the environmental impact of our wedding. Words like ‘going green’ and ‘carbon neutral’ have been thrown around a lot over the last decade. It seems that many of us have embraced the concepts, thinking about ways to recycle, reduce or reuse. How many ways can you think of that will reduce the environmental impact of your wedding? For some excellent suggestions, see the very first issue of Engaged! • I resolve to be socially responsible. Some of you might like to commit to using locally grown produce or ensure that you use ethical producers or suppliers.
9
engaged
Money, Money, Money • I resolve to make a budget and stick to it. Having a budget (that you stick to) eliminates a lot of the stress of a wedding – you know what you have and how you are going to pay for it. Go through the budget with the important people in your wedding party including your spouse-to-be, your parents and theirs; in fact, anyone who is contributing financially.
Be Prepared • I resolve to be more organised when it comes to my wedding. Another source of stress for brides is being able to get things done in the little time we have each day. Plan your tasks and don’t be scared to delegate if necessary. A bride’s best friend can also be a time sheet for the big day that lists what needs to be done when and by whom.
Relationships • I resolve to treat my bridal party with respect. Often you can expect your friends and other loved ones to help you out just because, well just because they are your loved ones. Remember to thank them regularly. • I resolve to remember that it’s about the marriage not the wedding. We can all get caught up in the glitz and glamour of organising and starring in the wedding. But every girl needs to remember why they are getting married to such a fabulous man. Sit down, talk, and re-connect at any opportunity you get. Get involved in conversations and activities that are not wedding-related. Go on date nights. Fall in love with each other all over again!

The
Reception L
et’s face it, the reception is a huge part of any couple’s wedding day. It’s the chance to celebrate your love: to speak about how wonderful each other is, to eat, to drink, to dance and be merry with all of your loved ones. Plus, generally, it’s the major expense in any budget. Engaged gives you our tips for making sure you include the ‘traditional’ bits without forgetting all the fun!
53
engaged
Whether the celebration is formal or informal there is usually: • The arrival of the bride and groom • Toasts and speeches • The cutting of the cake • The first dance • Time for the bride and groom to greet and chat with their guests • The departure of the bride and groom There is no set order for these things: Some couples choose to have the speeches and cake cutting before the meal so that, with the formalities over, they can relax and enjoy their celebration. Others like to have the meal and then have the speeches and cake cutting when their guests are relaxed after their meal.
Arrival of the bride and groom This is one opportunity to exhibit your flair for the dramatic or make a quieter entrance. Your entrance can be as wild as arrival by helicopter or something more sedate, like arriving in a horse and carriage. These, of course, are options for getting to the reception. Getting inside is a different matter. Entrances can range from the rather formal procession to the top table of the bride and groom, followed by the bride’s mother and groom’s father, groom’s mother with the bride’s

father, chief bridesmaid with the best man, then groomsmen and bridesmaids to a simple announcement from the MC that the new couple have arrived. For the shy ones amongst us, it is perfectly acceptable to arrive quietly and mingle!
Welcome and chat with each guest It can be quite a challenge, but it is important that you both speak to every one of your guests during the course of your wedding. One of the most traditional and easiest ways of achieving this is to have a receiving line. The receiving line is perfect for after the ceremony as your leave the church (or other ceremony venue) or as you enter the reception. If you’re having some ‘ceremony only’ guests then a receiving line after the ceremony allows for goodbyes and good wishes to be exchanged. ‘After ceremony’ lines tend to be over more quickly because everyone is keen to move on to the reception. Alternatively, your guests can arrive at the reception venue and be served drinks and nibbles while you have photographs taken, then be presented to the receiving line as they are seated for the meal.

The traditional formal line-up for a receiving line is: • Bride’s mother • Bride’s father • Groom’s mother • Groom’s father • Bride • Groom The less formal version is: • Bride’s mother • Groom’s mother • Bride • Groom Or in more complicated families with lots of step-parents, it may be easier to have just the bride and groom. Remember that the receiving line is meant for a quick greeting and thank you; a longer catch up is more appropriate for the reception itself. Greet each guest by name or politely ask their name, thank them for coming and introduce them to the other members of the wedding party if necessary. If a receiving line seems a little formal for you, make sure you do the rounds and thank each guest at some stage during the reception. These can be harder than you think, with guests moving tables to talk to each other, getting up to dance, and so on.

Toasts and speeches Covered in detail in previous issues of Engaged (which you can read in our archived editions on www.engaged.co.,nz), the toasts and speeches are your chance to shine and deliver that emotional tribute to your partner and to thank all those that deeply deserve it!
Cutting the Cake The cake is usually cut after the speeches. The MC will announce that the cake cutting is about to take place, so as everyone can get photographs if they want them. The couple hold the knife together to make the first cut. The bride holds the knife in her right hand with the groom’s right hand on hers and her left hand on top. A little hint is to pre-cut the first cut if the cake is iced with hard icing so the official first cut isn’t a struggle. The cake is then taken away and cut into enough slices for each guest to have a piece. Extra pieces might be cut for absent friends or relatives and sent to them in special cake boxes. It is traditional for the bride and groom to keep a piece or layer to share on their first anniversary or the birth of their first child.
First Dance If you’re having dancing the bride and groom will be first onto the floor, followed by the chief bridesmaid and bestman, parents of the bride and groom and then members of the two families.
engaged
58
Departure of the Bride and Groom It is traditional for the bride and groom to be the first to leave and, where possible, it is expected that guests will stay to farewell them. When it’s time to leave the bride may throw her bouquet over her shoulder to the unmarried female guests - tradition has it that whoever catches the bouquet will be the next bride. You don’t have to toss your bouquet, but it’s a good way to signal your departure. If you’re planning to have your bouquet preserved, get the florist to make a small posy to toss. It has also become traditional for the groom to throw the bride’s garter – of course this depends on how shy you both are! The hosts and bestman are the last to leave making sure everyone has safe transport home, and taking with them the bride and groom’s wedding clothes and any cards or gifts.
Do it your way In this article, we have covered the ‘traditional’ format for a reception. However, remember that you need to do what works best for you. It may be that you don’t have a sit-down dinner at all, but instead spend the night having fabulous cocktails, champagne and yummy nibbles. Or perhaps you forego the reception line and just make sure that you mingle with the guests throughout the meal. The important thing is that your reception lets you enjoy the day with your friends and family, which is after all what it is all about!

MAPPING THE
JOURNEY
By Rachael Corcoran
A happy New Year to you all! I hope that you had a wonderful holiday season, and that our tips in the last article gave you some food for thought and helped you overcome a few of the season’s temptations. Now I know that we have been talking a lot about your wedding day, but I would like to make an observation before we go any further. Being healthy in all its forms, including maintaining an ideal weight, being fit and not getting annoying illnesses, should ideally be a lifetime goal. Having a something to look forward to such as a wedding to kick-start the process is absolutely fantastic, however these rewards have benefits far beyond the day you say “I do”. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if you learned enough, did enough, put enough processes into place and found easy ways of monitoring it all, that you never had to really ‘try’ this hard again! In the meantime, let us continue with working towards your wedding. You might recall that we have likened your becoming healthy, slim and fit for your wedding day to that of a journey. Obviously, on most journeys Page 61 : engaged : October 2009
you take, you know in advance how you are going to get there. Let’s face it, knowing your way saves time, money and can relieve a host of other possible stressors. I don’t believe that I have ever, knowing where my destination is, not known how to get there, or taken the time to find out. So my question to you is – now you have established that your end date is your wedding day, and your ambition is to lose 5 or 10 kgs / tone up / or become healthier and fitter, have you determined exactly how you are going to do it? I ask you this because it never ceases to amaze me how many people have a very loosely thought out plan at best, and then wonder why it doesn’t serve them as well as they’d hoped. Just to take this analogy another step further, you probably realise there is generally more than one way to get to your target, be that a town or a city, or in this case your reduction of weight or a healthier you. The trick is in finding the right path for YOU. For example, I often have overweight people come to me who want to shed excess weight, either of their own accord, or having been told by a medical professional that they are at risk of a number of lifestyle diseases. The thing is, they know (from what they have read in countless magazines, or been told), that they have to exercise and diet. Amazingly, most of them have tried this before and it hasn’t worked!! Why not? Well, the answer to that is actually quite complex, but to simplify it as much as I possibly can, they didn’t find the key that would open the door for THEM. They struggled along doing things that went against what their body naturally wanted to do, what they enjoyed doing and made the process harder than it needed to be. This is where having a coach guarantees results. A good coach will help you find the keys that work for you, instead of you constantly trying different things only to give up. It is the same for someone who only wants to drop a little weight – finding the right path for you means that your results are sped up. You enjoy the process, and you are likely to be able to continue the process to ensure a lifetime of maintaining your ideal weight and good health (as previously mentioned a bonus even beyond the honeymoon). Some of the main stumbling blocks include not putting processes into place to ensure you follow through; another big one is when people don’t know Page 62 : engaged : October 2009
what kind of nutrition plan works best for them (a big heads up people, no diet works the same for each person, you all need nutrients in different combinations for it to work optimally for you!!). Sure, your body might go into a bit of shock and lose some weight for a couple of weeks, but if your diet is not sustaining your energy levels physically and mentally, then I can promise you, you will find it hard to continue. Why should it be hard when it doesn’t have to? Another is that people don’t know what is actually best for them to do on a physical level, that works both with what their body type likes, and what works for them on a psychological level to get it all flowing. Not getting these two in sync, also results in a struggle. Again, why should it be hard when it doesn’t have to be? As I said, this is actually quite complex and there are a number of other things that help make the health road a smooth ride, as these are very individual (a lot of people shouldn’t actually start with the exercise and nutrition). So to ensures you don’t have setbacks either along the way, or post your journey, the best thing you can do on an individual level is pay more attention to what is happening to you on multiple levels, or if you want it to be a much smoother ride, then find someone whom can help, I guarantee you are worth it (and I’m sure your lovely significant other agrees)!

Magical Minerals Treat Yourself Make-up has come a long way in the last century, and even decade. From lead-based foundations to pancake make-up to barely-there cream foundations to the big news today: mineral make-up.
So, what’s the big fuss all about? Mineral make-up is made from naturally occurring minerals, with
one of the key ingredients being zinc oxide. Zinc oxide is widely touted as a sunscreen but also is said to possess anti-bacterial and inflammation-reducing properties, which are excellent if you are battling acne. The other ingredients that make up mineral make-up are generally titanium dioxide, mica and talc. It is non-comodegnic (or, in plain English, non-pore clogging) so it shouldn’t irritate the skin or even penetrate it, which also makes
75

it an excellent solution for those with sensitive skin. Most mineral make-up brands are all natural but make sure you check the label for dyes, fragrances and mineral oils, which can, for certain skin types, cause allergies.
It has excellent staying power and, for those on a budget, a little goes a long way. And lastly, an all natural mineral make-up is perfect for those concerned about the chemicals they put on their skin.
Mineral make-up is not just for sensitive skins or those prone to acne. For mature skins, mineral make-up can help to minimize wrinkles and fine lines as it reflects light. For dry skins, the minerals can trap moisture in the skin, keeping the skin hydrated. For those with small pimples, scars, brown or red spots or even Rosacea, mineral make-up can cover them.
The best way to use mineral foundation Practice, practice, practice. To ensure an even coverage, the best way of applying mineral make-up is to firstly apply a face primer. A gel primer is best for photographs as it has less oil and will produce less reflection. Primers are
Not just for the girls We know you men think that makeup is only for models or those on TV or in the movies. The reason it is used is to make the model or star look like they have flawless skin, deflect light, cover blemishes (including shaving nicks) and produce some amazing photos. Normally it is the bride who goes to a lot of trouble to look perfect in her wedding photos, but now the guys can too! Mineral makeup is incredibly natural, so it won’t look like you are covered in girly goo!

designed to smooth out the skin, creating a silky canvas for the mineral make-up. Use the brush supplied with the foundation. A soft, natural, short, firm brush is best. Swirl the brush against the holes in your mineral make-up container. There should be just a light dusting of powder on the brush. You can tap any excess off. Use a circular motion to apply the foundation to your face, starting in the middle of your face at your nose, chin and forehead. Repeated circular motions, or buffing, will ensure even distribution of the powder.
WIN The Pureskin Clinic is giving away two eyelash extensions valued at $75 each!
It is best to apply several lighter layers, rather than one thick one.

roserpine Airport isn’t your typical vision of the beautiful Whitsunday Islands. But it is the most common and easiest of airports to begin your exploration of this area. And that all starts when you hop off the plane‌ The tropical heat hits you in waves, making you very aware you are in steamy North Queensland.

So Proserpine Airport isn’t the prettiest but a short 40-45 minute coach or taxi transfer later and you get your first views of the gorgeous waters that comprise the Whitsundays. This transfer takes you into the heart of Airlie Beach. Airlie Beach is the ideal base for your trip to the Whitsundays if you don’t have a particular island destination in mind. It has all the major services, including a very high proportion of massage therapists and a well-designed park on the water’s edge, complete with pool. Restaurants and accommodation options vary from the cheap to high end. But really, for those on honeymoon, you probably want to include a couple of special trips in your itinerary…
Daydream Resort and Spa One of the closest islands to the mainland is Daydream Island. Although it is a small island, it packs a punch: along with the ever-present beautiful bays and water, Daydream has water sports, tennis, volleyball, badminton, giant chess, mini-golf, a outdoor cinema and it even has its own wedding chapel! However, on Daydream Island, it is their world-class (and world-famous) spa that is a stand-out. With an extensive menu of services, a girl will be hard pressed to choose how to pamper herself and her husband on their honeymoon (or pre-wedding if you want to take advantage of that chapel!).

Hamilton Island Larger, with a huge selection of resorts, Hamilton Island won’t leave you bored. Relax in one of the hammocks lining the palm-fringed beach, swim in one of the multiple pools (or the sea, of course!), play mini-golf, para-glide, the list goes on! Hamilton Island also offers a multitude of shops and restaurants, so if you are looking for a bit of retail shopping to interrupt your honeymoon, this island is for you! And if it’s a wedding you’re after, Hamilton Island also has its own chapel – or you could get permission for a celebrant to marry you at your own private holiday house!
Hayman Island If luxury is your thing (and are prepared to pay for it!), then Hayman Island probably meets your requirements. The most secluded and exclusive of the resort islands, Hayman is Australia’s most awarded five-star resort and you can soon see why.
Your Own Private Beach A helicopter flight to your own secluded and deserted island, a gourmet picnic and a bottle of champagne – need we say more? Perhaps only that you get some ‘private time’ alone, together.

On the Reef If visiting the Whitsundays is your idea of heaven and you can’t wait to scuba amongst the fishes, then it is possible that that extra special honeymoon idea is a night sleeping on the reef. Of course we don’t literally mean on the reef! Fantasea have recently introduced their Reefsleep package: two days and a night on their specially designed pontoon. The pontoon is a floating playground: water slides, sub rides, snorkelling, scuba diving, sundecks and an amazing buffet. But at night, once all the day trippers have gone, it turns into your own floating paradise. A king-sized bed awaits, along with an alfresco dinner and wine under the stars (and just imagine how clear that sky is so far from civilisation). You even have your own personalised service in the form of a Reefsleep host. And for the ultimate brownie points with the new spouse, book a helicopter trip over the uniquely shaped ‘heart reef’.
