Bagsto Riches
S
arah Abrahams and Rebecca Kroon are the two fashion-loving sisters who started Bags to Riches in New Zealand. Both lawyers, their shared passion for Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Versace created a desire to do something less mundane than law and that involved fashion accessories and, voila! Bags to Riches was born over a few glasses of wine and a lot of talk about their penchant for handbags. 11
engaged
Rebecca (Bec) until recently was living in Melbourne and is now in Brisbane so a lot of the bags are sourced there as the choice is a lot wider than in New Zealand. Sarah lives at Mount Maunganui. Being an e-tail business allows them to be based anywhere and carry out the business from home, as all bags are sent out and returned by courier (usually the same day). Bec is mum to ten-month old Oscar and Sarah is mum to Olive (5) and Madelaine (4). Being mums has made them appreciate the times they do get to dress up and go out, whether it is for a dinner, a function or a special occasion such as a wedding. As mums they find their time is precious and it is important to make time to go out and feel glamorous every now and then. Having a gorgeous bag on your arm makes a great statement and makes you feel glamorous – it’s good to celebrate who we are and how we feel. E:
Can you tell us how Bags to Riches works?
BTR: Bags to Riches operates a hire system, whereby a bride-to-be, bridesmaid, mother-of-the-bride, mother-in-law or the fashionsta who simply wants to look great at the celebrations, can enter our website and choose a bag they like and hire it for a period of time that suits.
E:
How did you get the idea?
BTR: We both adore handbags. We wanted to incorporate a business idea with simply gorgeous handbags and at the same time offer a service that would please many fashionable women. In reality, the cost of purchasing a Louis Vuitton or Gucci product can be unattainable for many people, and for those who can afford to purchase them may only purchase one or two in their life time. With hiring you are able to wear many different bags at a fraction of the cost. Some of the bags on offer are also able to be purchased, should you adore the bag so much you
engaged
12
simply can’t part with it!
E:
What kind of bags do you have available?
BTR: Our range of bags include Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, Marc Jacobs, MuiMui, Chloe and Versace.
E:
Where do you source the bags?
BTR: All our bags are purchased either direct from the flagship stores (ie; Louis Vuitton, Guccie, Prada, Versace) in Australia and New Zealand or in small boutiques. For example, the Versace Black Beauty is one of only two bags in Australiasia and the Prada Heavenly Creature is one of only two in New Zealand. All bags are 100% genuine.
13
engaged
E:
Are there any particular bags you would recommend for weddings (ie bags for mother-in-laws, small bridal bags etc)?
BTR: Bags to Riches specialises in clutches, which are perfect for weddings. We have an array of colours and sizes to suit plenty of mother-of-the -bride ensembles, bridesmaids and brides.
Aside from weddings, the bags would be a great idea for pre-wedding events. How many bags can someone have at one time? You can hire as many bags as you like at one time, which is perfect for pre-wedding functions, dinners, champagne evenings, and it is a good opportunity to dress up in the lead up to the special day.
E:
Do you help women choose a bag that suits the style they are after (ie classy, modern, etc)?
BTR: We can do. We find most women who hire from Bags to Riches know exactly what they want, but we have plenty of tips on hand if needed, after all we adore fashion, bags and all things gorgeous!
E:
What are your most popular bags?
BTR: The most popular bags have been the Versace silver clutch (perfect for brides), Chloe tote and the Prada Heavenly Creature (also perfect for pre-wedding functions).
E:
And lastly, why hire bags?
BTR: Hiring bags is perfect for one off occasions where you do not want to hand over thousands of dollars for a bag that you will not use everyday. We all know that weddings are an expensive time. Most people would like to put their money into their dress and the function. With hiring accessories, such as handbags, you can complete your ensemble without the price tag attached. It allows people that extra piece of luxury to top the day off.

STAR
ATTRACTION This year the 14th of February is special for two reasons: not only is it Valentine’s Day, it is also the Chinese New Year. Like Western astrology, Chinese astrology allocates a sign depending on when you were born, and many believe that your compatibility can depend on what sign you are. Check out our fun guide to your sign and then find out whether you can expect your relationship with your partner to be smooth sailing or red hot!

The Rat
31 Jan 1900 to 19 Feb 1901 18 Feb 1912 to 6 Feb 1913 5 Feb 1924 to 24 Jan1925 24 Jan 1936 to 10 Feb 1937 10 Feb 1948 to 14 Feb 1949 28 Jan 1960 to 14 Feb 1961 16 Jan 1972 to 2 Feb 1973 2 Feb 1984 to 19 Feb 1985
Never without admirers, Rats are charming and generous. Their bright and happy personalities make them very attractive to others. Parents and children are very important in the Rat’s life and they love their home. On the negative side, they may appear calm but underneath they are restless. Rats often try to do too much at once, tiring themselves (and their loved ones!) out.
The Ox
19 Feb 1901 to 7 Feb 1902 6 Feb 1913 to 25 Jan 1914 25 Jan 1925 to 12 Feb 1926 11 Feb 1937 to 30 Jan 1938 29 Jan 1949 to 16 Feb 1950 15 Feb 1961 to 4 Feb 1962 3 Feb 1973 to 22 Jan 1974 20 Feb 1985 to 8 Feb 1986 2 Feb 1984 to 19 Feb 1985
Renown for being dependable and determined, people born in the year of the Ox also are well known for being stubborn. If this happens it is best to get out of their way and let them cool off! They are very straightforward and often don’t understand the love games other signs play. They like to develop intimate relationships over a long period of time – but once they make up their minds that they love you, they are loyal and giving, almost to a fault.

The Tiger
8 Feb 1902 to 28 Jan 1903 26 Jan 1914 to 13 Feb 1915 13 Feb 1926 to 1 Feb 1927 31 Jan 1938 to 18 Feb 1939 17 Feb 1950 to 5 Feb 1951 5 Feb 1962 to 24 Jan 1963 23 Jan 1974 to 10 Feb 1975 9 Jan 1986 to 28 Jan 1987
People born in the year of the Tiger have super egos and love being the centre of attention – and they can deserve it! Generous, playful, romantic, passionate and affectionate, the Tiger’s zest for life makes them very attractive mates. Recognise that the Tiger has a jealous and possessive nature and be careful you don’t bruise that ego though, they may never forgive you!
The Rabbit
29 Jan 1903 to 15 Feb 1904 14 Feb 1915 to 16 Feb 1916 2 Feb 1927 to 22 Jan 1928 19 Feb 1939 to 7 Feb 1940 6 Feb 1951 to 26 Jan 1952 25 Jan 1963 to 12 Feb 1964 11 Feb 1975 to 30 Jan 1976 29 Jan 1987 to 16 Feb 1988
Rabbits are very sensitive to beauty; these are the peace-makers of the Chinese zodiac. They have good words to say about everybody and are extremely understanding. Gracious, soft spoken, warm and friendly, the Rabbit is an easy sign to be with. They teach others how to relax. Rabbits make few enemies and rarely get into serious trouble. As one of the peaceful signs, don’t expect them to go out and do battle for you. 19

The Dragon
16 Feb 1904 to 3 Feb 1905 3 Feb 1916 to 22 Jan 1917 23 Jan 1928 to 9 Feb 1929 8 Feb 1940 to 26 Jan 1941 27 Jan 1952 to 13 Feb 1953 13 Feb 1964 to 1 Feb 1965 31 Jan 1976 to 17 Feb 1977 17 Feb 1988 to 5 Feb 1989
Like the name suggests, Dragons are fiery signs. They have no trouble attracting admirers with their love of life and vital presence. Those admirers keep Dragons optimistic and happy as they are at their best when they have someone who believes in them. They show their emotions easily and can often be heart-breakers, taking it for granted that everyone loves them. Dragons are proud and have high ideals which they strive to live up to.
The Snake
4 Feb 1905 to 24 Jan1906 23 Jan 1917 to 10 Feb1918 10 Feb1929 to 29 Jan 1930 27 Jan 1941 to 14 Feb 1942 14 Feb 1953 to 2 Feb 1954 2 Feb 1965 to 20 Jan 1966 18 Feb 1977 to 6 Feb 1978 6 Feb 1989 to 26 Jan 1990
Elegant and well-mannered, Snakes are romantic, graceful and charming. They love expensive things and will usually save for the real thing (which could be an expensive wedding!). Passionate, but sometimes jealous, Snakes can negotiate their way through any situation, often using their sense of humour to lighten the mood. Snakes are great to have around during a crisis as they are strong and always keep their heads.

The Horse
25 Jan 1906 to 12 Feb 1907 11 Feb 1918 to 31 Jan 1919 30 Jan 1930 to 16 Feb 1931 15 Jan 1942 to 4 Feb 1943 3 Feb 1954 to 23 Jan 1955 21 Jan 1966 to 8 Feb 1967 7 Feb 1978 to 27 Jan 1979 27 Jan 1990 to 14 Feb 1991
Hot-blooded, hot-tempered and impatient, Horses easily and gladly demonstrate their love for their partner. This can make them a bit vulnerable because they give up everything for the object of their affections. The Horse is not a jealous or possessive sign and in return they love their own freedom. The other thing they love is flattery – it will just get you everywhere with them!
The Goat
13 Feb 1907 to 1 Feb 1908 1 Feb 1919 to 19 Feb 1920 17 Feb 1931 to 5 Feb 1932 5 Jan 1943 to 24 Jan 1944 24 Jan 1955 to 11 Feb 1956 9 Feb 1967 to 28 Jan 1968 28 Jan 1979 to 15 Feb 1980 15 Feb 1991 to 3 Feb 1992
The Goat is one sign that truly appreciates romance: those born under this sign were born for roses, candlelight and soft music. Their shy, gentle nature means that they often don’t communicate what about is bothering them, and you may have to pry it out of them. However, when it comes to listening to their partner, Goat can be compassionate and understanding, accepting and forgiving. Appreciation of their talents make Goats glow. 21

The Monkey
2 Feb 1908 to 21 Jan 1909 20 Feb 1920 to 7 Feb 1921 6 Feb 1932 to 25 Jan 1933 25 Jan 1944 to 12 Feb 1945 12 Feb 1956 to 30 Jan 1957 30 Jan 1968 to 16 Feb 1969 16 Feb 1980 to 4 Feb 1981 4 Feb 1992 to 22 Jan 1993
The original and intelligent Monkey is highly regarded as clever and charming. Delighting in their own accomplishments, they have a supreme belief in themselves. Being quick-witted and innovative, you need to keep on your toes to keep a Monkey interested. Keep in mind that they will try anything at least once and enjoy it immensely!
The Rooster
22 Jan 1909 to 9 Feb 1910 8 Feb 1921 to 27 Jan 1922 26 Jan 1933 to 13 Feb 1934 13 Feb 1945 to 1 Feb 1946 31 Jan 1957 to 17 Feb 1958 17 Feb 1969 to 5 Feb 1970 5 Feb 1981 to 24 Jan 1982 23 Jan 1993 to 9 Feb 1994
Romantic and eccentric, Roosters are attractive and colourful, optimistic and organised. Ambition is strong in this sign and the Rooster’s stamina is something to be in awe of. They truly believe they are right and this stamina means they win their point at all costs. Even when they are wrong, they will still be right in one way or another!

10 Feb 1910 to 29 Jan 1911 28 Jan 1922 to 13 Feb 1923 14 Feb 1934 to 3 Feb 1935 2 Feb 1946 to 21 Jan 1947 18 Feb 1958 to 7 Feb 1959 6 Feb 1970 to 26 Jan 1971 25 Jan 1982 to 12 Feb 1983 10 Feb 1994 to 30 Jan 1995
Like man’s best friend, dogs are extremely protective of their loved ones. And once they decide you fall into the loved ones category, you will stay there for life: dogs are faithful and rarely change their mind about people. Dogs are honest and friendly; however they can be quite private until you gain their confidence. Once you have you will be reward with a playful sense of fun!
The Pig
30 Jan 1911 to 17 Feb 1912 16 Feb 1923 to 4 Feb 1924 4 Feb 1935 to 23 Jan 1936 22 Jan 1947 to 9 Feb 1948 8 Feb 1959 to 27 Jan 1960 27 Jan 1971 to 15 Jan 1972 13 Feb 1983 to 1 Feb 1984 31 Jan 1995 to 18 Feb 1996
The peace-loving Pig hates arguments and often forms long-last, very deep relationships. They are very sociable and can be very hedonistic, often to the detriment of the other areas of their lives: work hard and play hard is their motto. Honest, trustworthy, Pigs have big hearts and a calm, sincere approach to life. They possess the old-fashioned chivalry that can be addictive.

Your Compatability According to Chinese Astrology, the twelve signs can be grouped into four groups of three. These groupings supposedly represent animals that think alike and accordingly are good matches. These four groups are:
First Group: Rat, Dragon, Monkey This group has positive thinking and passion in common. Relationships can be intense, but this group likes it this way!
Second Group: Ox, Snake, Rooster Patient and deep thinking, the Ox, Snake and Rooster can really appreciate each other’s careful and conscious nature.
Third group: Tiger, Horse, Dog This energetic third group are always looking for a true soul mate, which makes other signs in their group an excellent match!
Fourth Group: Rabbit, Goat, Pig The last group are great believers in mutual co-operation and peace. Very giving, the Rabbit, Goat and Pig are considerate and loving. Of course, these are just general guidelines and there are other factors to consider like whether your year of birth is considered fire, earth, wind, water or metal. A trip to a Chinese Astrologer may be in order!

We have now been alongside you in your journey towards looking fantastic on your big day for a few months. Often, especially a wee way into the process, we start finding it a bit difficult to continue with our health programme. If you have taken on a coach, they will have helped you to avoid this. One of the things clients sometimes find beneficial is to have a reminder about their health that they can put on their fridge, mirror, or other such place, to provide a gentle reminder of what to do. So this month, we have provided for you a ‘poster’ that you can put where you believe it might be most helpful. Simply click the download button on the next page to download a PDF of the poster. We can also email you a PDF of the poster - just contact us via admin@ healthcoaching.co.nz.

The Power of
LOVE Ah, February, the month of love, of red roses and hearts and, of course, of Valentine’s Day. Falling on a Sunday this year, we are sure there are plenty of you planning an extra special day with the one you love. Even if you dismiss Valentine’s Day as a commercial idea, you can treat your partner and show them why you love them without shelling out a lot of money or resorting to the usual flowers and chocolates (not that there is ever anything wrong with flowers and chocolates!). We have some great ideas for celebrating your love by doing something a little different:
31
engaged
• Exchange hour-long massages: Turn the lights down and burn some red toned candles, light incense or aromatherapy oils, get out the soft, fluffy towels and some beautifully scented massage oil. Try ylang ylang, rose essential or jasmine for a sensual massage or lavender for a relaxing massage. Please note that essential oils should not be used whilst pregnant and you should get advice before using them (or massaging) while pregnant. • Cook your fiancé his or her favourite meal: Set the table with a tablecloth and napkins for that ‘restaurant feel’, get out your best wine glasses and set the mood with candlelight. Think outside the square a little: if you have a fantastic back yard, set the scene with glittering fairylights and a picnic rug beneath the trees; love the beach? Make your special dinner one you can enjoy on the sand. Not sure what to cook – see our fantastic ideas below! • Write some personalised love notes: Purchase some nice stationery, ensuring you get matching envelopes. On each piece of paper write one thing that you love, or made you fall in love with your partner. It may be a memory of a first date, the way their hair falls over their eyes, the way they always open the door for you…it’s your list and a great way to think about why your beloved is so special to you! Wrap them in a red ribbon and let your fiancé know they can open them all at once or one at a time.
engaged
32
• Write something racier: Along the lines of the above, this time write down things you would like to do with your partner in the future. And before you start thinking this is a bit raunchy for a wedding magazine, remember that the things can be experiences like bungy-jumping, hiking in the Andes, having a child together… • Post it: Also expanding on the personalised love notes, instead of stationery you could write on post-it notes and leave them all over the house, in his car, in his lunch box… Think about what your partner does during the day and where and leave notes in appropriate places.
HOW DID YOU CELEBRATE? We’d love to hear from you as to how you celebrated Valentine’s Day. Drop us an email to info@engaged.co.nz and share the love!
• Test your love languages: Many of you would have heard of the five love languages: words of appreciation, quality time, acts of service, gifts, and physical touch. Both of you can go online and take the test and find out what makes the both of you really respond. Use this knowledge to expand your ways of expressing your love to each other.

Menu ideas: Ok, it’s a little traditional but you just cant’s beat a good steak (and chocolate!).
Prawn cocktail with a twist What you need: 20 medium sized cooked prawns Baby rocket leaves ¼ cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon finely grated lime rind 1 teaspoon lime juice ½ red thai chilli, seeded and sliced thinly
If you are lucky enough, your prawns will be shelled already. If not, peel and devein them, leaving the tails intact. Toss the prawns with the rocket in a large bowl and then divide among serving dishes (a clear glass can look great!). Combine the mayonnaise, lime rind and juice and chilli and spoon over the prawns. Serve. As an alternative, you could serve the prawns on sliced baguette. Add a little tomato pesto to the mayo mix, spread it evenly over the bread, top with a cooked prawn and add a basil leaf for garnish. Too easy!

34
Fillet Mignon: What you need: 2 fillet steaks (use eye fillet steak – you will notice the difference!) 2-4 rashers of bacon 2 small bamboo skewers or toothpicks 20g butter at room temperature ½ clove of garlic, crushed ½ tablespoon of finely chopped parsley Make garlic butter by combining all ingredients and mix well. Wrap each steak with a bacon rasher and secure with a bamboo skewer or toothpick. Melt butter in pan and cook steaks until browned all over and cooked as desired. Serve steaks topped with extra garlic butter, if desired, and your favourite vegetables. Our vote is for baby potatoes, carrots and asparagus!

engaged
Chocolate Mousse What you need: 100g mini marshmellows 25g soft butter 125g good dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa solids), chopped into small pieces 30ml hot water 140ml double cream ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Put the first four ingredients in a heavy-based pot or saucepan and melt the contents over a low heat, stirring every now and again. Remove from the stove top. Whip the cream with the vanilla extract until thick and fold into the cooling chocolate mix until you have a smooth, cohesive mixture. Pour the mixture into glasses or small bowls, chill and eat! For a garnish try chocolate curls or berries (to be put on the mousse right before serving).

et to be the next big thing, the Video Kiosk, looks like a great addition to any wedding. We chat to Pete Varga about his new business and why you should get one of these for your big day. E:
So, first of all, tell us what the Video Kiosk is?
TVK: The Video Kiosk is the latest ‘must have’ for your wedding day. They are a fun way to dynamically capture all of your friends’ and families’ live video messages and photos in the easiest way imaginable. The Video Kiosk’s sleek design is very approachable and being totally automated they need no staffing. Wedding

guests simply touch the screen and follow easy instructions to record their video message or take their photo… and then they can choose to email it to friends and family around the world or even upload it to Facebook or YouTube! Guests will have fun making their recordings in their own time throughout the event… and the bride and groom and those friends and family they wish to share it with can enjoy re-living the event over and over for years to come through a secure link to our website gallery and exclusive DVD’s. E:
What was your inspiration for offering the Video Kiosk in New Zealand?
TVK: Similar products are achieving outstanding success in parts of Europe and the States; however we choose to develop our own kiosks working with local specialised manufacturers to ensure quality components, service and reliability. E:
What are the benefits for a bride and groom and is it intended to replace or supplement a videographer?
TVK: Rather than replacing the videographer, The Video Kiosk captures the images that the Bride and Groom’s professional photographer and videographer miss, or simply aren’t there for. While those professionals are focused predominantly on the wedding party, The Video Kiosk gives the bride and groom lasting memories of their guests from the night – think of them as the next step up from cameras on each table. Table reminder cards (which can also include guests names on so as to become personal seating cards) are provided to make guests aware of The Video Kiosk and include our very simple operating instructions. The Video Kiosk will also include a customised screen-saver with the Bride and Groom’s personal pictures and messages. And included in the package is a DVD of raw footage that the Videographer could include in the final video production for the Bride and Groom.

E:
How easy is it to operate? Do the people being videoed need to press ‘stop’ at the end (thinking of the slightly tipsy uncle who just walks off once he has finished)?
TVK: Very simple instructions and very large buttons (for those with blurry eyes by the end of the night) ensure total ease of use. And if someone does forget to press the stop button when making a recording, The Video Kiosk automatically stops recording after 30 seconds anyway so when watching the DVD you will still be laughing at their mistake when the next video starts. E:
Okay, so the wedding day has been and gone - what do the bride and groom receive at the end of it all?
TVK: Two exclusive DVD’s in a specially designed cover containing a fully edited DVD and one with the raw footage for use by their videographer if required. Also included is a secure link to our website gallery which the bride and groom can share with those friends and family they choose to. E:
What parts of the country can you supply them to?
TVK: We have agents throughout New Zealand so we are able to supply venues from Northland to Bluff. E:
The all-important question - what costs are involved? Are there different packages available?
TVK: Our standard price is $1,190, however for those locations outside 30km of the major metropolitan areas, travel charges do apply and these can easily be found by requesting a quote on our website. As soon as you put your wedding locality in there it will give you the pricing for that area. There is also an additional charge of $69.95 for the ability for your guests to immediately upload their recordings and photos to email, YouTube or Facebook.

E:
What quality is the video? Is it like a webcam or more like a normal DVD?
TVK: High quality video capture. PAL DVD quality - not like a webcam. E:
How good does the lighting need to be at the venue to make it work properly?
TVK: While some ambient lighting is required, The Video Kiosk has subtle lighting all around the screen to compensate for the dulled lighting which is normally expected as the evening progresses at a wedding reception. E:
How much room would you allow for the Video Kiosk area? Does it need to be in a quiet space?
TVK: Being only 62cm wide and 1.4m high The Video Kiosk will fit easily into any location, however it is best to place it where guests will feel comfortable leaving their messages, slightly away from the main party area in either a foyer, or in a quieter position in the main reception area. While this will also help with sound quality, The Video Kiosk will pick up noise only from within its immediate proximity. It was our ninth anniversary and when Jetstar launched its $5 flights, we were extremely lucky to nab a couple of seats to go celebrate in style. With accommodation in a beautiful miner’s cottage in Arrowtown, our romantic getaway was complete. Add some incredible meals and the best adventure tours in the country and it was an anniversary to remember!

Beautiful in winter, surrounded by snow-capped peaks, Queenstown isn’t just a ski-season destination. Long-sun drenched days feature during summer; fresh, green pastures in spring; a kaleidoscope of red, orange and yellow leaves in autumn: it is easy to see why Queenstown and the surrounding areas are a favourite with New Zealanders and our visitors from overseas. The flight into Queenstown airport is spectacular in itself. It feels like the wings of your plane are going to bump the edges of the surrounding mountains and the views of the picturesque countryside and lakes makes you feel like you are flying into another world. The whole area has a romantic, postcard-like feel to it, which makes it the perfect place to celebrate a wedding, honeymoon or, like us, anniversary. So do we start with describing the outstanding range of food and wines to partake in or the heart-starting adventure rides? Let’s work up your appetites by describing just a few of the activities the Queenstown district has to offer.
Where it all started: The Bungy Okay, I am going to admit it: we didn’t actually partake in the bungy in Queenstown, but we did spend some time watching the brave (or crazy) souls who did. The Kawarau Bridge Bungy is the original 43 metre bungy. Fearless jumpers leapt, dived, plunged and somersaulted off the bridge either alone or with a partner. Some looked scared but most were bold enough to come up laughing and smiling. The view from the bungy bridge over the Shotover River was enough for us: we preferred to look rather than topple into it! AJ Hackett also run the Nervis Bundy and the Nevis Arc, the world’s highest swing. http://www.bungy.co.nz/

The great Kiwi invention: the jet boat Shotover Jets call their ride ‘Thrill Therapy’: your heart races, hands sweat and adrenalin rises as you race down the Shotover River, narrowly missing the sheer cliffs that provide a backdrop for the one of the most gorgeous bodies of water in the world. And that’s even before your talented driver throws your boat into a 360 degree spin. Of course, you cool down at that moment: the exhilaration of the tight spin makes you forget that turning that fast in inches of water can only create a tidal wave that pretty much swamps everyone in the boat! http://www.shotoverjet.com/ For those who prefer a longer and slightly slower (only just) ride, Dart River Safaris offer an less touristy alternative to the Shotover Jet Boat. Starting from Glenorcy, the road out to the Dart River is an impressive drive in itself. The three-hour Dart River Safari then takes you deep into the heart of Lord of the Rings country, from the head of Lake Wakatipu into Mount Aspiring National Park. Surrounded by ancient forests, waterfalls, beautiful valleys and snow-capped mountains you truly feel like you are in a magical realm. Both trips are so different, it is hard to choose, so why not do both! http://www.dartriver.co.nz

The TSS Earnslaw For those of you who prefer a more sedate pace, a gentle boat ride may be in order. A central feature in Queenstown is its magnificent Lake Wakatipu and the best way to explore this glorious body of water is on the TSS Earnslaw. Believed to be the only coal-fired passengercarrying boat in the southern hemisphere, a trip on the Earnslaw is like stepping back in time as you float surrounded by Queenstown’s alpine peaks. The ‘Lady of the Lake’ is almost a century old, having been launched in 1912. It still manages several trips a day, and you can choose a cruise only or combine the trip with a visit to Walter Peak High Country Farm for a view of New Zealand’s farming lifestyle. Trips to Walter Peak can include a lunch or dinner. http://www.realjourneys.co.nz/

Hitting the road: Four wheel adventures Another must for the adventure lover is a trip with Nomad Safaris. A Green Globe certified business, Nomad Safaris operate personalised 4WD tours. With a maximum of six people per car, a ride in one of Nomad’s specially fitted vehicles gives you a completely different perspective of the Queenstown and Arrowtown areas. Whilst we are Lord of Rings fans (and this part of the country featured heavily in that trilogy), we opted for a breath-taking ride out through Skipper’s Canyon. Voted one of the top 25 most scenic roads by the British Automobile Association, Skipper’s Canyon features a road hand-hacked into the sheer cliff sides of the Shotover River. To get an idea of how ‘off road’ this trail is, most car rental companies will specifically prohibit you from using their cars on this road. The drop to the river is terrifying in places and the road is rather rough! Nomad’s tour takes you over the Skippers Suspension Bridge to the township of Skippers, where you can visit the restored school house. We were amazed, reflecting on the work required to create the road and how the miners and their families lived in the isolation of the Skippers Canyon. On the return trip home you have the opportunity to make like the gold rushers and pan for gold yourself! Now, all that adventure would work up an appetite in anyone, so on to the eating! http://www.nomadsafaris.co.nz/

Molecular delights: Saffron Pete Gawron has been cooking up a storm in his kitchen at Saffron Restaurant, Arrowtown for over ten years. A crowd and critic favourite, Saffron is a must visit. As we were ushered into the intimate dining space, shouting ourselves a bottle of Veuve Cliquot (it was our anniversary!), the waitress brought an amuse bouche to sample. Pete astounded us with his knowledge of what was described as molecular cooking: we were served what looked like an egg yolk but was in fact a ‘bubble’ of Bloody Mary. As we placed the morsel in our mouths the soft ‘skin’ popped, releasing the liquid within – we knew then we were in for a superb meal. The amuse bouche was followed by chargrilled Wagyu beef with tempura prawns on satay sauce vinaigrette, with coconut and palm sugar jelly for me (which just melted in my mouth and has my vote for my best meal of 2009) and the scampi grilled with tomato, coconut and coriander dressing for him. This is an old Saffron favourite and well worth ordering! The mains that followed were just as delicious but unfortunately we didn’t have room for dessert. We did however, have room for a quick drink in the Blue Room, also owned by Pete and his fabulous wife, Melanie Hill. Yes, Saffron is expensive but for a special occasion it has to be my favourite restaurant in New Zealand. http://www.saffronrestaurant.co.nz/

The romance of power cuts: Amisfield Winery Located at the turn off to Arrowtown, Amisfield is a stunning building. The atmosphere was only highlighted by the several power cuts we experienced the evening we dined: it somehow made it a more rustic and romantic experience. Aside from its excellent wines, Amisfield is known for its ‘trust the chef menu’. The chef chooses 6-7 dishes for you, ranging over 3-4 courses. We were in luck with fresh whitebait served on top of an excellent organic sour dour bread, followed by fresh asparagus and homemade ravioli. The chef then did his best with the rolling power cuts and served what was an outstanding meal that left us more than satisfied. One thing to be aware of is Amisfield’s early closing time. Their licence only allows them to open until 8pm, with last reservations at 6pm.

Ferg Burger And before you think we only recommend the top dollar places, a visit to Queenstown is not really complete without sampling a Ferg Burger. A local institution, these massive burgers beat the chain restaurant variety hands down! We were sad to leave Queenstown and Arrowtown but knew we would be back – hopefully sooner rather than later!
Getting There Air New Zealand, Pacific Blue and Jetstar all fly direct to Queenstown from Auckland, with the flight taking just under two hours.
