FITNESS

INTERVAL TRAINING engaged

Exercise of the Gods 9

engaged

Okay, so maybe interval training isn’t quite the exercise of the gods, but it’s definitely something all top athletes use and is a great way to increase your fitness and increase weight loss. Let’s start by covering what interval training is. The whole idea behind interval training is to allow you to perform a large amount of high-intensity exercise by correct spacing and duration of your exercise and rest (instead of just burning out). This type of training massively improves your fitness and increases weight loss by allowing you to perform a large amount of exercise that would normally exhaust you in a few minutes if you were to do it continuously (sort of like doing sets of the gym). Sounds easy doesn’t it? Well there’s a bit more to it than that - before we go any further, I should to fill you in on a bit of background. You see, there are three types of energy producing systems in your body but for simplicity we are only concerned with one: the aerobic energy system.

The Aerobic Energy System This is what fuels your body when you are performing exercise at up to 75 percent of your maximum effort. So this covers anything from brushing your teeth in the morning to going for a moderate sprint. When you train to lose weight you want to exercise at an intensity that uses this energy system for these reasons: • You can build a high amount of total calorie expenditure • It has the effect of increasing fat utilization

engaged

10

If you exercise at any higher intensity than this, you are exercising a different energy system and are not getting these benefits. Working other energy systems are better for different things, for example, improving top speed or improving power generation in your muscles - that’s why all those machines at the gym have stickers on them showing ‘weight loss zones’ and a higher ‘cardio zone’.

Interval Training Guide An interval training guide to exercise your aerobic energy system looks something like this: • Work phase (Sprint): 3min • Rest phase: 1.5min • Intensity: 75% max speed • Reps: 3 • Sets: 2 • Rest between sets: 5 minutes (light exercise)

11

engaged

So you sprint for 3 minutes at 75 percent of your maximum speed, then when your 3 minutes is up you drop to a moderate jog for 1.5 minutes and then sprint again for another 3 minutes. You repeat the sprint-jog cycle three times and then follow it with 5 minutes of a brisk walk to allow your body to recover. You then repeat the whole programme one or two more times (depending on your fitness level). Also, if you really want to fine tune your cardio sessions use our target heart rate calculator to find your optimum training zone. Bride Parade

Strutting their

STUFF Two weeks ago, we held the first annual Auckland “Bride Parade”.

“What is a Bride Parade?” – I hear you ask. Well. The basic concept was to get a bunch of brides, who were already married, back into their wedding dresses for a fun, fashion inspired, shoot.

The girls were all from the weddings. co.nz discussion forum – and it was a great chance for them to meet one another, and put faces to the online names. We even had one bride fly all the way from the Gold Coast to join us – commitment!

provided a great backdrop for some interesting images. We also went a bit more dramatic with the makeup than usual. Credit here belongs to the amazing Ashlee Kellett from Beautified – who, along with Mandy Green and Lexia Dyer, did a wonderful job of the hair and makeup.

One goal that we had was to push the boundaries of traditional wedding photography a little.

I loved that all the brides bought along a favourite pair of shoes, which we also worked into the shots.

A grungy location was a good start – an old factory in West Auckland, complete with car parts & grease,

engaged

30

Everyone had a really great time – Amber, and also all the girls from Beautified, ended up putting on some of our studio dresses and getting in on the action! The chance to shoot group images with 12 brides was something I couldn’t pass up – and every single bride absolutely rocked it. They were some of my favourite images from the shoot – and next time I’d like to focus even more on those.

– and everyone ended up with some cool images to take away from it. We’re shooting round 2 in Christchurch in July, and possibly one in Wellington in August. Hopefully, it’ll become an annual event – as long as there are brides willing to don their dresses for a second time in the name of fashion!

The day really went without a hitch

Here at Engaged and Weddings.co.nz, we would like to congratulate Isaac, Amber and the team for providing this fantastic opportunity for these brides to show off their dresses again. More importantly, we would like to say how amazing the brides are! Not only do they all look absolutely gorgeous, but you can see from the photos just how much they got into the day which undoubtedly was a major part in making the day the huge success that it was! We are really looking forward to the Christchurch parade in July and can’t wait to see those photos!
