Fantastic Engaged’s guide to wedding lighting

I

admit it. I have an obsession with lanterns and fairy lights. Chinese lanterns, silk printed lanterns, tea lights in paper bags, candles in simple glass jars. Strung in trees, on wires, in bunches from the ceiling, individually at uneven intervals. Tiki torches count too. And don’t get me started on candles (that’s for another issue!). It may be a slight fascination with fire, but mostly I think that the light reflected from lanterns and fairy lights is magical and warm. It glows, just like your love should. OK, now that was a bit soppy (but only a bit, right?). If you are like me, then you will most definitely be considering fairy lights or lanterns for your wedding. And if you are not, there are still a couple of things you should consider.

Is it nerves making him pale? Think about last time you tried on a bikini in a tiny cubicle. Harsh fluorescent lighting probably had you running from the changing room, muttering about not being seen dead in any swimwear until you lose some weight and get a tan. The same principles work for wedding lighting: whilst your guests are not likely to run out of the reception, there are some lights will flatter you and your guests, making everyone look (and feel) good. Whether you choose to use candles or specialised lighting, think about the difference between hard and soft lighting and how lighting directs the attention around the room. Most people relax a bit more in dimmer light: it reminds them of the end of the day, giving that ‘after-work’ feeling as they escape from strong office lighting.

engaged

12

In the spotlight It is helpful to visit your reception venue at least once while it is dark outside. You can check out what lights the venue has: whether any natural light will stream in during the dusk hours, where the existing lights are focused, whether those lights can be dimmed, whether light from areas leading into the reception room will permeate the main area. Lights can be used to draw attention to an area or, conversely, away from it. Lights at the edge of the ceiling illuminating the walls draw the eye away from the centre of the room. Spotlights will direct your eye to a particular spot. Read about what type of lighting can be used where and think what you want the effect to be before deciding on options.

Through rose-coloured lenses Just as some lights work for different purposes, there are some colours that just don’t do a venue or the guests justice. For example, olive greens can make a room look murky, which is probably not the look you are going for at a wedding reception. For lighting that goes through the whole room try tones that go with all skin colours. Soft golden or pinky hues help to set a soft, romantic mood. These can be deepened to oranges or darker pinks when the dancing starts. Or for a winter wedding, you may like to try a wall of icy blue lights, with flickering white lanterns on the tables. Ask your lighting co-ordinator what they would recommend for

the venue and how colour changes can be achieved. Many lights can be pre-programmed.

Lighting al fresco Whilst daylight savings can limit the amount of time your lights will be used for, outdoor lighting and lanterns can be truly special. Think of a big, sprawling tree with fairy lights strung through it or strings of brightly coloured lanterns. The lights will look like they are floating above your guests’ heads. Outdoor lights can be used for mood lighting or for a specific purpose such as illuminating or highlighting a path. Paper bags with sand and a tea-light candle make cheap, effective lanterns for this purpose.

Power up Check with your reception venue if they have any limitations with respect to available power points or electricity loading. You will also need to do this at home – remember all the extra electricity you will be using for spare refrigerators, the band’s instruments and so on – the last thing you want is to literally blow all the fuses!

Expert Assistance If you decide that you need extra lighting after checking out the available lighting at your venue, you may need to contact a lighting specialist. Ask at the venue to see if they have any recommendations. Anyone who has worked at the venue will know what works and that will make it easier for them to make suggestions.

engaged

16

The terms you need to know… It can be slightly easier to make decisions about lighting if you know what you like and need. These are some common types of lights: A pin spot is a focused beam of light designed to shines directly onto something, for example, the cake. A colour wash creates the effect of covering a specific area with coloured light. Think of a wall of icy blue light behind the head table. Gobos are stencils that are put over a light, projecting a design or pattern, pretty much like the ‘bat’ light used in Gotham City. Whilst the bat light probably isn’t appropriate for your wedding, we are sure you can use your imagination to come up with some wedding-appropriate gobos! For the greenies amongst us LED lights are proving popular. They use less electricity and don’t get as hot. Used for colour changes, in strands or for accent lights, some are even wireless – think of the possibilities!

Wedding Insurance

Your guide to whether you should fork out for wedding insurance

FEATURE

As much as we hate to get super-serious, there are times when a frank, realistic talk about what can go wrong at a wedding is needed. But, as per our usual approach to life, instead of focusing on the problems, we focus on a very good solution: wedding insurance. Read on to find out more.

33

engaged

What does wedding insurance cover? Cover varies from policy to policy and insurer to insurer, so it is important that you read the fine print. We try to explain the basics here… Some insurance providers, such as Insuranz Direct, have specific wedding policies. These wedding-focused policies tend to cover not only cover for the major aspects of the wedding, but also the planning of the wedding. They provide cover for: • Expenses incurred in cancelling the wedding; • Expenses incurred in rearranging the wedding; • Expenses incurred when a supplier fails to provide services or product; • Legal expenses; • Personal liability; • Loss or damage.

What’s covered and when does it kick in? As advised above, each policy does differ. To give you an idea as to what is covered, we have set out some examples below based on a policy offered by Insuranz Direct. These, however, are only examples and may have changed since this article was published. Accordingly, you need to make sure you discuss your own policy with the provider. Expenses incurred in cancelling the wedding: Insuranz Direct’s policy will cover cancellation or postponement of a wedding due to events like an illness, adverse weather or the officiating registrar or minister not showing up. These reasons will trigger cover for any cancellation fees for a booked venue.

engaged

34

Expenses incurred in rearranging the wedding: There may be extra fees payable for rearranging a cancelled wedding and your policy should cover this. Expenses incurred when a supplier fails to provide services or a product: In the current economic client, a lot of brides and grooms are concerned about booking a business to supply goods or services so far in advance. With many businesses struggling, the worry is that the business will still be operating at the time of the wedding. This category covers failure of pre-booked suppliers following bankruptcy or liquidation and will include reimbursement of any non-recoverable deposits and additional costs in arranging alternative (and equivalent) services. Legal expenses: Legal expenses usually means the costs of taking legal action against someone responsible for personal injury or death at or in conjunction with your wedding. Personal liability expenses: Insuranz Direct’s policy includes reimbursement for legal liability for accidental personal injury and accidental damage to property arising out of or in consequence to your wedding. Insuranz Direct will also pay any legal costs and expenses that are incurred (with their prior written consent) in the investigation, settlement or defence of any claim made against you. Loss or damage: This will vary from policy to policy, but for Insuranz Direct, loss or damage includes cover for loss or damage to ceremonial/bridal attire, wedding gifts (including cash and vouchers), rings, flowers, the cake, wedding cars and transport, photography and videography and marquee cover. Note, however, that some companies do not include the dress and rings under their cover as they assume that it is already covered by your home and contents insurance. Make sure that you clarify this prior to taking out cover.

How much is covered? Policy limits will vary, depending on the insurer and the level of cover taken out. Your needs will vary, depending on the cost of your venue hire, your dress etc. For example, Insuranz Direct’s policy covers venue cancellation fees up to $30,000 and damage to your dress/bridal attire up to $15,000. Work out how much you are paying for each item and see whether the policy you are considering will cover these costs in the event of something going wrong.

How much does it cost? We all bemoan having to pay insurance costs: that is until something goes wrong. Wedding insurance premiums can be a lot cheaper than you think, especially given that the average price of a wedding in New Zealand is estimated to be in the order of $30,000. Mid range premiums of $300+GST represent only 1% of the total cost. So, like all forms of insurance, it is a case of weighing up the cost of something going wrong with your wedding (either in the planning stage or on the day itself) versus the cost of the insurance. The piece of mind afforded by having insurance is also something that you should consider, especially since planning a wedding is stressful enough in itself!

For more information, you can view Insuranz Direct’s wedding policy here: http://www.insuranzdirect.co.nz/weddings/home.cfm

The

Dresses 55

engaged

We are pleased to announce that in our upcoming editorial shoot, we will be showcasing some fantastic dresses from City Bridal. We asked Vera Wang and Rositta Chong from City Bridal about what they do and what they see as the next trends in bridal gown design. Give us some background about your business. When did you start and what made you want to get into wedding dresses? Vera Wang: I have been immersed in design and beauty all my life so it only felt natural to end up designing wedding fashion. With my wedding gowns, my aim is to make every woman feel extra beautiful on her special day. I am inspired by my research in North America and Asia, where I personally select most of the fabrics for the wedding and bridesmaid gowns I create. However, while creating amazing gowns that make a bride look fantastic is extremely important, service is also a top priority for me. If I promise that a gown will be completed on a certain date, I always make sure it will be. At Vera Zuccari Couture, we are able to supply wedding dresses, bridesmaids dresses, ball gowns and all wedding accessories, providing customers with a “one-stop-shop” experience they can trust completely. We also opened “City Bridal” in Auckland in 2004, and this brand is now found in selected wedding retailers across New Zealand. Rositta Chong: I have been passionate about designing clothing since I was little. I even used to design paper clothing for paper dolls when I was still at Primary School! My father had a clothing manufacturing business exporting to Europe and the USA which I used to work at in the school holidays, so I have learnt about the design and manufacturing process from a very young age. That developed into a huge passion for fashion and I have now been involved in the fashion industry in New

Zealand for 25 years. I really have a passion for clothes and people. When I see a piece of fabric, I can really visualise a style and can imagine how it will look like on a person. Through my designs, I want to bring the best out of people. I really want people to feel good and confident in what they wear rather than just following the trend. The gown must suit the bride’s personality and that is always my aim. For most brides, it is the first time getting married and can be a daunting process. It doesn’t need to be though, does it? Tell us about the process for brides wanting a wedding dress from City Bridal. Our consultation at our showrooms are by appointment only, which means each and every bride gets our full attention and the showroom to herself, without other clients popping in to scan through the available dresses and interrupt her trying on process. We sit down and have a talk to the bride about what she would like and then make suggestions about dresses, both within her ideal dress style and also dresses that may suit her. If the bride has seen a dress in a magazine that she likes, it is great if she can bring that photo to us. Once the bride finds a gown she likes, we take an extensive range of measurements and arrange to have it made in our workshop. It takes about 12-14 weeks for dresses from our Couture Collection. We find that most dresses fit perfectly first time, but we also provide extra fittings if needed. What is the difference between your City Bridal Collection, Couture Collection and Simply Exquisite / Exquisite Designs Collection? Our range of gowns is very complementing, providing each bride with the opportunity to choose from a variety of exclusive gowns that meet her needs, expectations, style, price range and personal wishes.

engaged

58

Each collection offers a choice of alternative options to ensure the gown of choice meets and exceeds the bride’s expectations. Is there a trying on or consultation fee? No, there are no consultation fees as we believe the customers need a chance to establish a close working relationship to us and feel sure that they are in good hands. As soon as the bride and members of her family and friends recognize during the initial free consultation that we are working hard to provide her with the gown that best suits her, stands out and perfectly matches her dream dress, then we start designing her exquisite gown. Some shops only supply dresses up to size 12. Do you have any dresses available for plus size brides? Our couture collection gowns are custom made. This allows us to tailor one-off gowns that fit perfectly and compliment different body shapes. Is there any style that is currently more popular than others? And what are your predictions for the future? At the moment, there seems to be a trend towards single shoulder strap, less beading and a softer structure. There is a strong indication that in future there will be more emphasis on a designer look rather than the traditional look. Furthermore, we believe that lighter weight; free and easy gowns will gain in popularity. Do you offer any other services besides wedding dresses? While we focus on bridal gowns, we also offer custom-made bridesmaid gowns and mother of the bride gowns. We also have a large range of wedding accessories such as veils, shoes and jewellery. And as we are in the business of tailoring, we obviously offer alteration and fitting services. Don’t forget to head to www.citybridal.co.nz to view their collection.

Meet the

We thought it would be great for you all to meet the photographer who will be shooting the upcoming editorial spread. So, we recently met up with the extremely talented Jessica Higueras from Jessica Photography and chatted with her about her approach to her photography, some of the new things she is doing with her business, and her inspiration.

63

engaged

Tell us a little bit about yourself. You are originally from Peru and mother of two. How long have you been in NZ and when did you start your business? I have been 10 years in NZ (and still the accent hahaha). I would say I have 3 children because my business became my 3rd one since the first day Jessica Photography Ltd was created, which was June 2006 How would you describe your style or your approach to wedding photography? I think all photographers start with a style and then we keep evolving year after year…I approach wedding photography with a mix of photojournalism, editorial, portrait, landscape and even macro photography!!… put all that in a box, shake it and then that’s what you would see! I would add to all that my real passion for photography and my eye when shooting, my personality and enthusiasm when directing, and also my x-factor when editing. I read you went back to Peru and cover a wedding that won a Kodak Gold Award, how was it going back to Peru and shooting there? Yes, I had the great opportunity to shoot a wedding in Lima. I approached it exactly in the same way as I do weddings here. Normally weddings in Lima are at night but this one was during the day. Lima was better than I remembered it and I have to confess that it felt really good to be back and shooting there. It was a lovely surprise to win the Kodak Gold Award, which is a great affirmation of the quality of work, and design that we do. I’ve seen your photos and can really say that you are doing great things with your photography, where do you get your inspiration from? I’m always trying to reinvent myself and improve my photographic craft. I’m addicted to magazines! There’s

engaged

64

nothing better than sitting with a big pile of mags and a good coffee!!.... also like watching lots of movies and music videos. I have an eye for ‘framing’ portraits everywhere I go. I cant help seeing photos of couples even when I’m not shooting a wedding!! I see you also do editorial shoots. How are these different from weddings? They are totally different. In weddings, couples are different from professional models, you need to know how to direct them and you don’t have as much time as you would have on an editorial shoot. Also, with weddings, you are watching the clock all day and you need to be organized and deliver no matter what even if it is a stormy day! It cant be postponed. You recently added an Associate, Jared Luke to your business. What do you think this addition will offer to your clients? Jared is a talented and passionate photographer who is able to cover weddings in the same unique style as I do. It is a pleasure to have somebody with such great talent on board that adds to the overall flavor of Jessica Photography. This will give more opportunities for those couples that wish to experience the special Jessica Photography touch as we now have more dates available for bookings. All Images are edited in house giving that unique style that is Jessica Photography With the recession, have you found that people are spending less on their wedding photography? No, I have found that people are still willing to pay for a quality photographer. People recognize that wedding photos are something not to be skimped on and are willing to pay for experience and expertise. Do you shoot portraits as well? Yes, I enjoy shooting family portraits, children at play and Pregnancy. I’m a bit like a Fashion designer when shooting

65

engaged

Pregnancy as I like to use different type of fabrics in my shoots! ..… I love it!!! Do you have any advice for people when choosing a wedding photographer? I think it is really important to look at complete wedding albums to see how the photographer captures the day and how they can design your story in an album. How do you feel when looking back at yourself, 5 years ago when you started your business and now shooting all the great weddings you’ve done, shooting editorials and even having covers on magazines? I feel very privileged to be doing what I love. I feel extremely lucky to be shooting weddings in this beautiful country with amazing landscapes and venues! Now that I’m shooting editorials, I feel that I’m living my dream and I’m very grateful to be doing this. It has been a long road paved with lots of effort, commitment and dedication to be where I am now. It looks like you are very goal orientated…. What is next for Jessica Photography? Long stretches of golden sand, fun parks galore, fantastic shopping, perfect weather...no wonder New Zealanders love the Gold Coast! Located on the east coast of Australia, the Gold Coast covers an area from Coolangatta on the Queensland/New South Wales border to half-way to Queensland’s capital city, Brisbane. It has long been a tourist mecca for Kiwis, being only at short 3-4 hour flight away. We spent a week on the Gold Coast recently, checking out what’s new and some old, but improved, favourites.

Some things change, some thing remain the same... One thing most people notice about the Gold Coast is the ever-present building work. It seems like a new hotel, resort or apartment building is popping up every five minutes. A recent addition to the skyline is the giant Q1 Resort and Spa. Billed as the world’s tallest residental tower, Q1 stands at 322.5 metres high (or 80 storeys). It’s well worth a visit to the building’s observation deck, which has 360 degree views of the coast. From Q1 you get an amazing view of the sandy beaches the Gold Coast is famous for. The beaches are one thing that never changes: golden sands plus great surf plus sunshine equals a beach-lover’s dream holiday.

It's not all about the beaches One thing many visitors overlook is the Coast’s amazing Hinterland area. Mount Tamborine is just 25 kilometres from the heart of the Gold Coast. Visit for the arts and crafts, markets, bush walks, horse rides, antiques and collectables or for hang gliding - the views are absolutely stunning!

Slightly further from the coast is Binna Burra, in the Lamington National Park. Bush walkers will love the native flora and fauna with 16 recommended walks. Adrenalin junkies will love the abseiling, flying fox and confidence course.

House of fun Dreamworld. Movieworld. Seaworld. Wet ‘n’ Wild. Australian Outback Spectacular. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. WhiteWater World. Dracula’s Haunted House. Roller coasters. Stunt shows. Giant drops. Towers of Terror. Dolphins. Crocodiles. Shark encounters. Performing horses. Waterslides. Waterides. Simulated surf beaches. V8 supercars. Vampires (apparently really hot right now!). What more can we say?

Water sports And don’t forget the water sports. Aside from surfing, boaties can take advantage of the Gold Coast Seaway‘s 270km of navigatable waterways. Hire a tinnie, a jet ski, a BBQ boat, or for the ultimate fun weekend, a houseboat. You can even get married on the water in the Gold Coast’s floating chapel!

Shop 'til you drop For those of you wanting some serious retail therapy, you can’t go past the Gold Coast. Shopping at Pacific Fair is rivalled by discount shopping at Harbour Town and the markets at Carrara, and then there are all the malls in between: Robina Town Centre, Australia Fair, Westfield Helensvale to name a few.

The Gold Coast truly does have it all!
