The wedding day is getting closer, you have the perfect dress, have sorted the bridesmaids and now you’ve found ‘THE SHOES’. They’re the right height, the right style, totally you, but are they the right colour? Whether this is the predicament you find yourself in when it comes to dressing yourself or the wedding party, or it’s the post wedding ‘I really want to wear these expensive shoes again’. You are definitely not alone, as this is a very common situation, and dyeing wedding shoes both pre and post wedding is a popular choice for many brides. Those that venture into this shoe dyeing world, are usually in for a pleasant surprise – It’s not scary, you can get fantastic results, and best of all your shoes can be matched to the colour of your choice. However, there are some important things you need to be aware of when dying shoes whether it be for yourself, bridesmaids or the mother of the bride/groom, as it is not always plain sailing.

Beware of the do it yourself kits and YouTube demonstrations, we’ve heard far too many horror stories to even contemplate going down this track. The key is to find yourself a reputable shoe dyer, and discuss with them what you want to get out of the shoe dying process. The shoe dyer will usually ask to see a colour swatch of the fabric you want to match, and then let you know if the shoes you have are suitable. Not all shoes can be dyed to all colours. So make sure you do your research if dyeing shoes is part of the plan. Common problems that are encountered involve colour matching, especially to the Champagne/Taupe colour spectrum. Also only certain materials can be dyed, you are usually safe with silk or satin shoes, but if your shoes have a lot of detail, crystals, lace or ribbons, it’s advisable to seek advice before purchasing. Samantha Lindsay from Shoe Dyeing in Auckland agrees, “Dyeing your wedding shoes is a very intricate process. After 12 yrs in the business we have certainly learned the tricks of the trade and will always involve the bride, discussing with her how close we can match the desired colour and what we need to do to get it there”. At the end of the day, deciding to dye a pair of wedding shoes does require you to invest a little time and effort into research, to ensure you can achieve your desired goal. But there seems to be an overwhelming thumbs up from those who have ‘gone there’ and seen the end result of the shoes working so well on the big day. Okay, so maybe interval training isn’t quite the exercise of the gods, but it’s definitely something all top athletes use and is a great way to increase your fitness and increase weight loss. Let’s start by covering what interval training is. The whole idea behind interval training is to allow you to perform a large amount of high-intensity exercise by correct spacing and duration of your exercise and rest (instead of just burning out). This type of training massively improves your fitness and increases weight loss by allowing you to perform a large amount of exercise that would normally exhaust you in a few minutes if you were to do it continuously (sort of like doing sets of the gym). Sounds easy doesn’t it? Well there’s a bit more to it than that - before we go any further, I should to fill you in on a bit of background. You see, there are three types of energy producing systems in your body but for simplicity we are only concerned with one: the aerobic energy system.
The Aerobic Energy System This is what fuels your body when you are performing exercise at up to 75 percent of your maximum effort. So this covers anything from brushing your teeth in the morning to going for a moderate sprint. When you train to lose weight you want to exercise at an intensity that uses this energy system for these reasons: • You can build a high amount of total calorie expenditure • It has the effect of increasing fat utilization

If you exercise at any higher intensity than this, you are exercising a different energy system and are not getting these benefits. Working other energy systems are better for different things, for example, improving top speed or improving power generation in your muscles - that’s why all those machines at the gym have stickers on them showing ‘weight loss zones’ and a higher ‘cardio zone’.
Interval Training Guide An interval training guide to exercise your aerobic energy system looks something like this: • Work phase (Sprint): 3min • Rest phase: 1.5min • Intensity: 75% max speed • Reps: 3 • Sets: 2 • Rest between sets: 5 minutes (light exercise)

So you sprint for 3 minutes at 75 percent of your maximum speed, then when your 3 minutes is up you drop to a moderate jog for 1.5 minutes and then sprint again for another 3 minutes. You repeat the sprint-jog cycle three times and then follow it with 5 minutes of a brisk walk to allow your body to recover. You then repeat the whole programme one or two more times (depending on your fitness level).
