TO MARRIAGE IN SIX HOURS Words by Greg Daniels

“What are you doing over there? Picturing me as your wife?” With these words Greg Daniels was caught out; staring, transfixed on a girl whom he’d met only a few days earlier. So it was only fitting that he rephrased the question, six years later, when asking Lynore Oakley to marry him. From the moment they met the chemistry was unmistakable. The pair were never more than a moment away from a sly joke or shared smile. Lynore was back home in NZ on holiday from her OE in the UK & Europe. Canadian-born Greg was traveling New Zealand as part of a small documentary film crew. They met at the wedding of a mutual friend and became friends while traveling the length and breadth of the South Island. Lynore recalls, “as the trip went on, I just found myself hanging on his every word.” After a month, they parted as friends but

Greg remembers, “I was waiting to depart from Auckland airport thinking, ‘don’t leave. Get back in the car and go get the girl.’ It was a true movie moment for me,”. Six years, a daughter, two dogs and a house later, Greg’s marriage proposal was shaping up to be no less than cinematic. From a beautifully decorated marquee hidden behind the sand dunes on the Kapiti Coast, fifty of their friends and relatives were invited to witness the proposal. “The plan was to drop to one knee while on a beautiful family walk up the beach but the weather bomb that day had other ideas. I couldn’t change the date so in the pelting rain we drove to the spot where my secret microphone was within range and our friend and hidden camera man could get the best shot.” Lynore was in the back seat with their daughter Lacey Rose, “ Greg suddenly stopped, got out of the car, came round and opened the door... I think, I thought the whole thing was a bit strange because I wondered why he didn’t pick a sunny day.” After a short poem he popped the question to a slightly shocked and teary eyed Lynore to which her answer was yes. Relieved, but still very nervous, Greg pulled out an umbrella and led engaged

his new fiancee and their daughter over the dune to their guests in waiting only to discover that they were 15 mins early. Everyone, including the camera man, had missed the moment so after apologizing to each of the guests as they arrived, the couple later braved the storm again for a reenactment. But the proposals didn’t stop there. Once back in the marquee, Greg dropped to his knee one last time and asked, “Will you marry me today?” It was only a few months earlier that Greg had decided it was time to finally propose. During the hour commute to work he’d devised a plan to not only get engaged but also be wed on the same day. “Once I found out that you only need one signature to get a marriage license, everything came together quite quickly.” Greg recruited a group of talented friends and family to help him achieve his ambitious plan.

“The last thing I wanted to do was hijack the biggest day of a girl’s life, so it was paramount that those people helping me knew Lynore and her style as well as I did.” Finding the dress was first on the list. For this Greg rang friend and owner of Paperdoll, Trina Laracy. “Trina was really the one who came up with how we could get Lynore to secretly choose her own wedding dress.” Then there was the venue. The guests were unaware of the day’s dual purpose. As both an engagement party and later ceremony venue, the marquee itself had an integral part to play. “I felt the only way Lynore would say yes to marrying me that same day would be if she was surrounded by her favourite beautiful things.” To achieve this while working over 50 hours a week, Greg again relied on their community of friends. by The Furnishing Affair and the decor was designed by Lovely Living while the flowers and overall coordination was impeccably handled by one of Lynore’s closest friends, Karen Rogers. “I couldn’t have done it without so many people but Karen was key. Not only did she think of everything I didn’t, she went ahead and arranged most of it. From Lynore’s hair, makeup and the band Shabam, to securing Glendoran Estate for our ceremony venue when she knew we couldn’t escape the weather bomb.” And so the stage was set for Greg’s third and final proposal. Lynore again said yes to an eruption of cheers from their guests and was then revealed the lengths to which all had gone to make the day possible: Marking their daughter, Lacey’s, height on the kitchen wall was later sent to a family friend back in Canada who made Lacey a flower girl dress. While modeling dresses for Paperdoll’s website, Lynore was actually picking her own wedding dress. Tracing Mummy, Daddy & Lacey’s hands on paper was actually Lynore’s ring sizing. After asking her sisters to be her bridesmaids, Lynore was whisked away and made ready while the flowers & decor were transferred over the hill to Glendoran Estate in Reikorangi. “I didn’t have much organized beyond the second proposal. I think part of me didn’t believe I’d pull 43

it off. Everyone had to adapt quite quickly. The Front Room cafe were amazing. They packed up the delicious vegan and seafood nibbles and drinks they’d made and even delivered them to Glendoran.” Six hours later Lynore & Greg were married by their celebrant and friend Richard Khouzame. The ambitious and slightly mad plan of a man in love paid off. “We are just so blown away by all the incredible support from our community, family and friends. They all went above and beyond for us and we are forever grateful.”

The concept of drawing up a legal document agreeing to who gets what in the event of a separation can raise all sorts of trust issues and can be a stressful thing to deal with for any couple - not to mention the actual nuptials! So why not get ahead of the game and get your affairs sorted before you have an altercation at the alter.
