BEST FOOT FORWARD

SALLY LOWE FROM TROUSSEAU BRIDAL & EVENING SHOES EXPLAINS WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING SHOES

69

engaged

While

there is so much time and consideration involved in planning the perfect wedding: the dress, the venue, the photo locations, the guest list, the wedding favours, one very crucial decision, that shouldn’t be overlooked is the importance of the wedding shoe. Think about it, these shoes need to walk you down the aisle, match the style of your wedding dress, pose with you in your photographs, not to mention one of the big moments of the day – The first dance. These shoes need to be fantastic, be the right height, be comfortable and most importantly the bride must LOVE them.

Heel Height

Choosing the correct heel height is very important in selecting your wedding shoes. The heel needs to be comfortable to walk in (all eyes will be on you!) so try and stick to a height you feel comfortable with, now is not the time to experiment. The length of your dress will also affect the heel height (and vice versa). You will usually need to be in possession of the wedding shoes, before

final dress hemming. The typical rule of thumb for floor length gowns being: have the heel height so as to allow the dress to JUST skim across the floor. Those with shorter wedding dresses have more flexibility in choosing the height and style of wedding shoes. Yours and your partner’s height are also important factors in determining appropriate bridal shoes. Some brides will wish to gain height to be closer to their partners, while taller brides may opt for a flatter shoe. It comes down to personal choice. Just remember, if you are tall, 10cm stilettos will only accentuate this.

Shoe Style

There are so many styles of wedding shoes to choose from and the best way to select what you want is to try on as many different shoes as possible. Open toe, pointed toe, sandal, boots, stiletto, platform, wedge or ballet flats are just some of the options available. Play around and have some fun. From there it becomes easier to eliminate what you don’t like and in turn find the style that you do want for your big day.

Shoe Fabric

The two most common fabric types for wedding shoes are silk and satin. Make sure you take care in your choice of fabric, as there is quite a range in quality and price. At the top end of the range is the crème de la crème of materials, Duchesse Silk. There is also often the added adornment of broaches, swarovski crystals, lace and bows etc. Choosing a shoe in either silk or satin also generally means that they can be dyed. This is a preference for many brides, either to match the dress or bridesmaid’s dresses for the wedding or

engaged

74

to work with your favourite outfit post wedding. Make sure you check where you buy the shoes that they can be dyed if this is part of your criteria. It will all come down to what you want out of your wedding shoes and what best suits the style/theme of your dress and of course the wedding itself.
