TIPS FOR PLANNING YOUR BEACH WEDDING 57

For
many, our love affair with our beautiful beaches continues on our wedding day. Whether white sandy east coast or black sand west coast beaches, they are fantastic backdrops for your wedding photos and bring to mind fun and carefree sunny days! There are however a number of factors you need to consider if you are getting married on the beach.
THE WEATHER Rain and wind can cause havoc with beach weddings. Rain, for obvious reasons, and wind, not only for the annoyance factor, but also because strong breezes can prevent guests hearing your vows. For your own piece of mind, it is worth having a back-up plan. This may be a nearby covered venue, a swathe of umbrellas or even using your reception venue for the ceremony. Check out the beach prior to the wedding day to see if there is a sheltered area that can be used on windy days. It is also worth discussing the use of microphones with your videographer to make sure your vows are able to be heard on the video! Whatever your back-up plan is it is, make sure that you have worked it out before you finalise your beach venue. This becomes important as, when you apply for your marriage licence, you need to specify exactly where you are getting married (or an alternate location) and the licence is only valid for those locations.

SOME IDEAS TO COMPLETE YOUR BEACH THEME... • Beach themed table cards • Dried starfish on invites or scattered on tables • Hurricane lamps with sand and candles • Fish tanks with tropical fish as centrepieces • Shells sprinkled over tables, sewn into your veil, or spread over the ‘aisle’ of your ceremony entrance • Blues and greens used for bridesmaids’ dresses and the men’s ties • ‘Sand hearts’ on the beach or saying your vows standing in a heart drawn in the sand • Favours shaped like fish or seahorses
THE TIDE A great task for the groom is checking out the tide times for your beach – some beaches look a lot different with the tide in or out! It can also impact significantly on how busy the beach will be and how much room you will have to yourselves.
THE GUESTS You will most definitely want your guests to have an enjoyable time at your wedding and part of this is ensuring they don’t get sunburned or chewed by mosquitoes! Consider some sort of shelter for those guests dressed in a full suit or backless dress, remembering that the guests maybe waiting 59

on the beach for some time. Having a few bottles of sunscreen and insect repellant at the venue on the day can help guests from turning up at your reception looking like mosquito-bitten lobsters! You may wish to have a more relaxed dress code to allow both the guests and the bridal party to be more comfortable. It also reflects the more relaxed nature of the venue itself. If some of your guests are elderly, it could also pay to have some chairs on the beach as well as some umbrellas if there is no other shade. Also, when choosing the venue, ensure that there is easy access for your elderly guests.

PERMITS Most beach wedding will require a permit of some description from the local or regional council. This is especially the case if you want to ensure that you have exclusive use of a certain part of the beach. You may also need to consider a special liquor licence if you wish to have drinks on the beach.

With most beach weddings held in the height of summer, there are a number of factors that can have a negative effect on your skinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health and radiance. So what can we do to prepare our skin for summer beach weddings?

THE BIG QUESTIONS It is important to remember that the skin is our largest organ and, as such, it requires the most attention. Ask yourself the following to see if you are doing everything you can for your skin: The first question is what are you doing to feed your skin, both internally and externally? Most of us know the saying ‘you are what you eat’. And it’s true - buying and eating healthy food is very important as everything we put into our body comes out in our skin, so we really need to be conscious of what we are feeding it. The second question is whether you are drinking enough water? Dehydration is one of the most common causes of ageing skin so we need to hydrate the skin from the inside and outside. The third question is are you exercising enough? Exercise, whether going to the gym, playing sport or going for a long walk, is highly beneficial to the skin as it increases blood flow and flushes out toxins, giving us that much sought after healthy glow.
INSIDE AND OUT As well as carefully monitoring your food and water intake and the amount of exercise you do, there are a couple of products you can use to ensure your skin is in tip-top condition for summer and the big day. We all know that Vitamin C can be taken internally; however many people do not realise that you can also apply it externally. Vitamin C is in fact one of the most widely used skin care ingredients. The variety of skin rejuvenation / anti-wrinkle products

with vitamin C is staggering. Do these products work? Do their claims have any substance? The situation is a little complicated. On one hand, vitamin C does possess definite, scientifically validated merits for wrinkle reduction and skin rejuvenation. On the other hand, many vitamin C products do not work as they do not contact enough vitamin C (research as shown that a minimum of 10% vitamin C is needed to be effective). So while vitamin C is scientifically proven as being effective in the fight against wrinkles, fine lines and hyper-pigmentation, when taken orally, only a very small amount of this precious skin-saving vitamin actually reaches the skin. And because the body cannot manufacture or store vitamin C, the skin often lacks this essential nutrient. That’s why Paul from The Pureskin Clinic recommends applying a daily dose of vitamin C to the skin. It is an essential part of the anti-oxidant brigade to protect skin against free radical assault, from the atmosphere and from ultra violet light – your very own natural sun inhibitor! Paul believes that it is the most important product that anyone can apply to the skin. He has found that their vitamin C Serum has created amazing results for many of their clients. Omega 3 is another nutrient that is very important to the body. It supports the functionality of the body’s skin cells and helps to produce new healthy ones. Again, it can be taken either internally or applied to your body externally. But before taking or applying any available product, beware: currently there are many products on the market which claim to contain health promoting ‘omega 3’, but contain only α-linolenic acid (ALA), not EPA or DHA. These products contain mainly higher plant oils and must be converted by the body to create DHA and are therefore considered less efficient.

PROTECTION BEFORE AND ON YOUR WEDDING DAY As we know, the sun here in New Zealand is very harsh on the skin and so we need to take more care than normal, especially in summer. Sunblock is a must, both on the day and every day! Being in the sun all day at a wedding can make us hot and cause perspiration. So you will need to make sure that the sunblock you are wearing stays on and does not slip when perspiring. Zinc dioxide and titanium oxide are the only two ingredients that have, through numerous studies, been proven to be effective sunblocks and are natural. Therefore these two ingredients are very good for the skin so check if your sunblock has them! Pureskin Clinic has two great sunblocks – tinted and un-tinted both containing zinc dioxide and titanium oxide and, as an added bonus, vitamin C. A lot of skin damage is done in our late teens to early 30s, so using a good sun block is essential. It is a great way of protecting your face from the harmful damage and helps you to keep looking more youthful.
REGULAR TREATS Lastly, having regular facials will improve your skin’s tone, texture and fine lines. All this leaves you with a younger looking skin – just perfect for those wedding photos! They will also allow you to wear less makeup, as your skin will be more even in tone and texture. Having to wear less makeup on that hot summer day for your wedding would definitely be a plus! Always check with a professional beauty therapist if you are using the right product for you.
