Maree Turner Photography - Anything but Ordinary

Page 12 : engaged : September 2009

Page 13 : engaged : September 2009

M

aree Turner Photography had the pleasure this year of photographing Nicola and Craig on their wedding day. You may have seen them on ‘Hitched’, which is running on TV3 at the moment. Maree shares her thoughts on the day. Whilst being involved with ‘Hitched’ was a unique experience, I have discovered that there is more than one reality and that the use of a TV camera gives a somewhat different result than a series of individual images. ‘Hitched’ only showed one view of what was a graceful and stylish wedding through its view finder. This is partly due to the use of a TV camera: it doesn’t capture or freeze-frame those moments of time that give us a permanent memory and all that the expression says. Editing and cutting and pasting can certainly change the perception of the story as well and it was unfortunate that the program only showed such a small slice of Nicola and Craig’s day and seemed to miss out so much of the important moments. Some of those were the time away with the photographer, which is a fantastic time for the bride and groom to relax away from the hustle and bustle of the day to spend intimate and fun moments together. This is the time of the day to enjoy quality time with each other and their bridal party honouring the specialness of the day and celebrating their love for each other. It’s the day, if there is no other, to let your love show. Capturing and stimulating this environment is one of the highlights of both the photographer and the bridal party’s day. It’s one of creating images that reflect the raw and real emotions, the unique essence and spirit of who they are together and with their bridal party. That expression caught as the shutter comes down. The magic of the moment captured.

Page 14 : engaged : September 2009

Page 15 : engaged : September 2009

They missed this part of the story and this is the part that hangs on the wall as a reflection of such a special day. The other valuable photography time was when the bride was getting ready and Nicola was quite happy to not have the camera crew invading too much of that time. The transformation into the Bride as that gown is stepped into and the final touches were added is something truly special. Images taken at this time are filled with delight and anticipation and Nicola had the added bonus of their two beautiful children sharing this time with her and they were so excited. Unfortunately TV doesn’t get to create the stunning results a professional photographer can or tell the story in full. But it does give us entertainment, and I’m sure future bride and grooms watching would have learnt a few things about what to and what not to do for their own wedding. For more images, please go to www.mareeturner.co.nz.

“As a photographer you get to shoot in some fabulous, interesting, and sometimes unusual locations but capturing a groom and his groomsmen in an elevator that also included a film crew was one of the more remarkable ones – it made a great shot but was in a very full elevator with no room to breathe out!”

Page 18 : engaged : September 2009

The bride’s view: “It’s a time old cliché that your wedding day passes by so quickly but one I’m sure all brides can attest to as being absolutely true. I have hundreds of snapshot moments from that day that are very special memories but some of the best are from our bridal party photo shoot in Cornwall Park. After such a frantic day when everybody wants a piece of you and you don’t get a moment to yourself, the opportunity to have an hour with your brand-new husband and closest friends with no pressure or demands from anyone was amazing. Craig and I revelled in the chance to enjoy these first quiet moments together as husband and wife and reflect on what had been an amazing day (knowing there was still more to come) and the photographs Maree took captured the intimacy and depth of these moments and are our favourite wedding images. It may sound strange but we were almost oblivious to the TV cameras as we were so wrapped up in each other and the magic of the day”

Interest

Registering Your

The pros and cons of gift registries

T

he debate rages on as to whether wedding gift registries are a good idea or not. Those coming down in favour say that gift registries are more practical and easier for your guests; whilst those disagreeing with the idea say that gift registries are greedy and impersonal. Engaged discusses the pros and cons of creating a wedding gift registry.

Page 55 : engaged : September 2009

Pros From the bride and groom’s point of view, there are a number of benefits to having a gift registry: • A gift registry is a chance to let their guests know what would

make their married home complete. The list can be personalised according to the couple’s style and taste and greatly reduce the risk of receiving yet another toaster or bread maker! It is also quite useful when couples make have been living together for quite a long time prior to getting married and may have accumulated most of the traditional wedding gift items,

• You also have the opportunity to ask for things that a lot of guests

would not think of, for example, a honeymoon gift registry, adventure type activities or even a donation to your favourite charity!

• If you are currently living overseas, you can set up a gift registry

in the country in which you are living; this means that you won’t need to lug that dinner set half way across the world!

From a guest’s point of view, the positives are numerous. • There may be many reasons why you are not aware of the

couple’s preferences or needs. Perhaps you haven’t seen the bride since she was a young girl or you work with the groom and haven’t had the pleasure of being invited to their house. A gift registry takes the guesswork out of choosing a present and ensures you won’t gift something that ends up in the back of the cupboard for years to come.

• Efficiency is a major benefit, especially for online registries. You

can shop anywhere, anytime and the store will wrap the gift, include a card and even deliver it for you.

• The use of registries that cover a number of stores means that if

Page 56 : engaged : September 2009

the store you visit doesn’t have the gift you want to give, another store in the group can send the gift for you. Too easy! But when there are positives, there are also negatives…

Cons • Some guests think the wedding gift registry is greedy, with many

overpriced items appearing on the list, with a long and seemingly endless list of choices. Of course, this is countered by the opinion that a long list gives the giver more choices – both in actual gift and in amount to be spent!

• Others consider choosing gifts from a list to be impersonal. It

can feel like the bride and groom are ‘ordering’ the guest to get them something the guest may not have purchased themselves. Guests often like to give something from the heart, taking time to select what they consider to be the perfect gift and don’t like to be limited to a chain of stores.

• Guests might also like to pick the perfect card and write a

personal message on it. Often this is difficult to arrange with online gift registries where only a type-written note is included in the present. (If this does happen, we would suggest guests buy a separate card to give to the bride and groom. It can have a personal message in it and refer to the gift purchased online.)

• When money is a little tighter, guests do not like the couple to

see how much they have spent on their gift!

• Even if you include some low-priced items on your list, these may

be taken quickly, with the rest of the guests being faced with the more expensive presents.

• You may also want to consider what happens if the guests only

buy you half of a dinner set. After the wedding you might need to dig into your own pocket to purchase the rest of the set.

Page 57 : engaged : September 2009

Suggestions There is no reason why you can’t get around all of the cons associated with having a gift registry. Here are some suggestions: • Make sure you choose a selection of gifts that cover a range of

price points. This will let those of your guests who can’t afford to spend too much choose something from the list. For some of the more expensive items, see if the shop will let you split it up to let people contribute to a part of it.

• Make sure that you make it clear that gifts are optional and, if

people decide to buy you a gift, they do not need to buy off the registry if they don’t wish to.

• Personalise the items on the registry by explaining your choices.

A gravy jug may match the china upon which the bride-to-be served the groom with her first home-cooked meal; whilst a couple’s love of their garden could be reflected in both the theme and the gift list.

Don’t forget to check out next month’s issue, when we will highlight some of the gift registries available!

Off to a

Flying Start!

Arrive at your wedding by helicopter

Page 61 : engaged : September 2009

A

grand entrance by helicopter may seem a bit rockstar-like, but it is your wedding day – why not knock the socks off your groom by arriving in style, literally flying into his waiting arms or leave the ceremony together, flying off into the sunset? Such an entrance or exit is sure to be remembered by your guests for a long time!

A dramatic entrance If you have a flair for the unconventional or your wedding has a dramatic theme, a helicopter entrance or exit could fit in perfectly with that theme. Or the use of a helicopter could be extended into the theme itself: think miniature helicopters on the tables, invites with ‘chopper’ blades… However, if your wedding theme is romantic and traditional, you may do best with a more traditional mode of entry like a horse and carriage or classic car.

The only way is up An advantage of arriving or leaving by helicopter is timing. A helicopter can get you places a lot quicker than the average car. It can also get you places the average car cannot. For this reason helicopters are very popular for taking the bride and groom to off-the-track places for photographs. You may remember the bride and groom from our last issue that had their photographs taken on Mt Cook! A number of helicopter charters have the exclusive use of private beaches or mountains, which can make your wedding photographs really special! Trips to Waiheke or Great Barrier Islands are readily available, and then there are options like flights to Cathedral Cove.

Page 62 : engaged : September 2009

Bigger is better When considering using a helicopter as transport, consult with both the helicopter operator and the venue. You need a large area to land, and permission for the owner to land. That area should be unobstructed by trees or power lines and not so far away from the venue that guests don’t see you.

You also need to think about the size of the ‘copter itself. Will it fit you, your father and your bridesmaids if arriving by helicopter? Can all of the wedding party and the photographer fit in it if you are using it to transport the wedding party to photograph locations? How cosy does it feel if you are using it as the getaway vehicle for bride and groom?

Page 63 : engaged : September 2009

With a helicopter, you can get to amazing locations like this.

Page 67 : engaged : September 2009

Weather or not There is no doubt that flying is best on a clear day – rain and high winds do not make for a fun flight! Think about those who will be travelling in the helicopter. Anyone with a fear of heights or flying or a tendency towards motion sickness is not going to enjoy themselves, especially if the weather is inclement. It is always advisable to have a bad weather back-up plan. Ensure you ask the helicopter operator what they would advise and what their policy is on cancelled flights.

Stirring the breeze Helicopter blades create quite a breeze. If possible, get the operator to start the blades after you hop in and to shut the blades down before stepping out of the helicopter so as to minimise wind damage to beautifully styled hair. You should also think about your landing spot: if the blades remain turning, it can stir up a lot of dust – not nice on a brilliant white wedding dress!

Cost Helicopter rides prices start from just over $300, with the cost varying for waiting time, number of trips, number of passengers and the flying time. Make sure you do your research – if a dramatic entrance is something you want for your wedding, there is no reason you can’t budget for it!

Engagement

Shoots

T

his month Engaged talks to Rachael Kelly of Rachael Kelly Photography about engagement photos. It’s not something a lot of couples think about, but is an excellent idea to capture that first glow after the engagement!

E.

How do engagement photos differ from a wedding photos?

RK: An engagement shoot is often 1-2 hours in a fun location with just the couple who are getting married. There is no one else around watching so they can really relax and just focus on each other for a while. Within a few minutes of the shoot starting you really start to see the little quirks in their relationship which may not be on show on the “big day”.

Page 69 : engaged : September 2009

E:

What are the advantages of having a set of engagement photos taken?

RK: The main advantage of an engagement session, is to get the couples used to having their photos taken without the nerves and rush of the wedding day. It also gets them used to how I work so that on the day they feel relaxed having their photos taken. During the engagement shoot we often discuss and try some shots that I have in mind for the wedding day, this speeds things up on the big day when time frames can be very tight . The shoots are intended to be as fun and relaxed as possible. It is also a nice record of the couple before their wedding day as often their family photos really only begin with the wedding photos when everyone is formally dressed. With the engagement photos I try to show some of the couples individual style, and I would like to think that if they have children later on that they would love to see their parents as they were when they meet. E:

Would you recommend that engagement photos be taken at an engagement party or a special time be set aside?

RK: I recommend that the couple definitely set a special time aside and I try and get them to choose a special place that is significant for them. Each couple generally have a special place of their own whether that be where the proposal occurred, family properties or that very special favourite end of date spot. E:

Do you include an engagement session as part of a wedding package?

RK: The engagement session is more about ensuring that my clients are getting a high level of service and that I as a photographer can build the most effective relationship with the client. If they book a wedding shoot with me I will offer this as part of my package . I offer Engagement shoots to my local clients and also to my out of town clients on the condition that they come to me for the shoot. Luckily I live in a great location with a gorgeous beach, historic buildings, cute

Page 70 : engaged : September 2009

cafes and an awesome estuary with old boat houses so we can just pop down the road for a shoot if they are from out of town. E:

Who would you include in the photos – just the bride and groom or the family and bridal party as well?

RK: I’m always happy to meet client needs after all it’s their special moment that I am capturing. However I generally recommend keeping it as just the couple as I really want it to be a special time for them when they can just focus on each other. Keeping it intimate enables me to really understand what they would like on their big day and they can trust me to deliver this. E:

When would you recommend they are taken – straight after the engagement or a little closer to the wedding date?

RK: Because it’s about building a rapport I like to schedule the shoot about 2 months prior to the wedding. Of course these can be taken at any time to suit the couple but the most benefit is gained from having the session closer to the wedding. E:

Do couples have to get dressed up for the photos or do you prefer a more casual approach?

RK: The shoot is really about finding an expression of the couple, essentially what they are about, so this will vary for different couples. it is all about depicting them in the environment that they feel comfortable in and says something about them and their relationship. Some will want to dress up and others will want to dress casually in each case I try to catch that expression of love between the couple and capture the spark that brought them together. Cellulite! Lumologie‌ A state of the art beauty treatment Proven and painless alternative to liposuction‌

As the years pass women notice their bodies changing both inside and out. For many women the most disturbing of these changes is the appearance of cellulite. Cellulite is most often found on the thighs, stomach and buttocks. Its lumpy appearance sometimes resembles cottage cheese. In actuality cellulite is a collection of fat that pushes against the connective tissue beneath a person’s skin causing the dimpling or puckering on the outer skin. Whether or not a person has cellulite is dependent on many factors, including age, genetics, amount of fat on the body, and the thickness of the skin. Many treatments such as liposuction have been touted for the reduction of cellulite. Unfortunately these treatments usually only provide a temporary respite from the appearance of cellulite. There is a new treatment for cellulite called Lumologie. This state of the art treatment is used for lymphatic drainage, detoxifying and firming via stimulation of blood and to encourage lymph circulation. It is a non-invasive procedure that is used to diminish the appearance of cellulite, stimulate collagen production, aid in body contouring, stimulate blood circulation, and help to eliminate toxins. All of these things often result in slimmer legs, smoother skin, healthier body and a reshaped silhouette. The process of Lumologie creates a partial vacuum on the surface of the skin and then pulls the skin up between two mobile rollers, which adapt to the fold of the skin. This skin is then rolled and massaged which increases lymphatic drainage. This detoxifying vacuum therapy is both relaxing and invigorating What can it be used for? • • • • • •

Most clients experience increased kidney function, reduced fatty deposits and orange skin, as well as restored suppleness and elasticity to the skin. Lumologie, a patented French technology delivers both a rewarding experience and a deeply soothing treatment for clients that use it. Whilst wedding dresses are not traditionally short enough to show the dreaded cellulite, Lumologie is a treatment well worth considering for the post-wedding beach (and bikini!) honeymoon!

Pureskin is located in Ponsonby and not only do Lumologie treatments. They also offer a skin consultation programme, and this can be incorporated into one of their promotional facial treatments. Their other treatments range from eyebrow shaping and eyelash tinting, manicures and pedicures, waxing, paraffin wax treatments, hot stone massages (coming soon!), facials, Max 7 Photodermatology, IPL, Luminologie and infrared saunas.

The Pureskin Clinic is open from 10am to 5pm with late nights on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until 9pm. They are closed on Sundays. For more information, please see www.pureskin.co.nz.

Wonderfully Wellington O

ur fair capital, New Zealand’s third largest city, is largely known for its windy weather and odd-shaped parliament building. But secrets await those keen to explore the wonderful Wellington. For those who have never been, Wellington makes a fantastic honeymoon destination and, with flights being so cheap these days, the money saved on travel can be spent on living it large in the capital city! We visited on a sunny long weekend. Stepping off the plane and out of the terminal we were greeted by blue skies and warmth – something sadly lacking in Auckland when we left earlier that morning! After the obligatory coffee (cafes are one of the many things Wellington does extremely well!), we hitched a ride on one of Wellington’s oldest tourist attractions, its cable

car. The cable car departs Lambton Quay in town and travels up past the University to the Botanical Gardens. From the gardens an amazing vista of the city is laid out, along with some simply stunning gardens (where, incidentally, you can hold your wedding). A stroll through the gardens (downhill all the way) led us back into town and landed us at the feet of the Beehive and the other parliament buildings. Built between 1969 and 1979, the Beehive was so named because its structure resembles, you guessed it, a beehive, with the rooms and offices radiating from a central core. This is where our government works. To see it first-hand you can take a tour of the buildings, perhaps catching a glimpse of your favourite pollie.

At this stage, lunch was needed. A bit more of a walk took us to Courtenay Place, where the choices are endless. Trying to be a little healthy, we have what could be the country’s best kebab at Sahara. Watch out if you do try them – the chilli sauce packs a punch! More walking followed lunch. It’s a short way to our National Museum, Te Papa from Courtenay Place. Free to enter, Te Papa is located on the waterfront (again, another stunning walk – all this exercise gave us justification for sampling all the great food Wellington has to offer!!). The Museum permanently houses the Awesome Forces, Blood Earth Fire, and Bush City exhibitions, as well as featuring special events such as the current Formula One display. You can quite easily lose yourself in the museum, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time. All that walking called for a short nap before hitting Wellington’s night life. As it does, things became a bit of a blur, but the standout bars were St John’s on the waterfront and a bar called Motel, which you probably will need a local to locate for you! The next morning saw us on the train for a trip up the Kapiti Coast, one of New Zealand’s famous cheese regions. The train trip itself is highly recommended. About an hour from the city, the journey is a picturesque one. Plus, there’s cheese at the other end. Kapiti produce award-winning cheeses, inspired by poetic notions likes the glow of the west-setting sun. Returning to Wellington, it was time for a spa and sauna at our hotel, the Holiday Inn. Modernly refurbished, the Holiday Inn is a short walk from town and only 2 minutes from the train station and a supermarket. After a soak, cocktails and dinner beckoned. We had been recommend Zibibbo by a number of experts – both Wellington-based and from other towns. With food inspired by Spain and Italy, the menu at Zibibbo is extensive. Unfortunately, due to our over-indulgence

in food the day before and for lunch, we had to limit ourselves to some well-chosen tapas and a few wines. Our last day in the capital was overcast, which was a great excuse to see a movie at the iconic Embassy Theatre. This was the theatre that Lord of the Rings premiered at and is a beautiful venue, right down to the bathrooms! A last coffee and some wonderfully healthy food from Deluxe (next door to the Embassy) and it was time to leave. We sadly said goodbye to a gorgeous city filled with great food, amazing sites and a great deal of walking!
