ON OUR We are still swooning almost a year after first seeing this photo by Shillawna Ruffner. The ladies at Emerald Design brought to life this stunning photoshoot incorporating spring’s most dramatic flower, the peony. CAKES & CONFECTIONS
HOLLYWOOD CAKE
DID you know that the national average cost for a wedding in 2016 was over $35,000? This information provided by a highly regarded bride resource The Knot can be a scary number for a bride on a budget. When you are planning the wedding of your dreams, it can seem like a daunting task to make your vision a reality without deep pockets. In the wedding world, your cake is usually one of the less costly details. Compared to other wedding essentials such as the venue, caterer, photographer and dress, the wedding cake is relatively inexpensive. Here are a few hints to help make your wedding cake the beautiful centerpiece of your reception that you are dreaming of without breaking the bank. First you will need a realistic guest count to estimate how large of a cake you will want to order. Next, you will want
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
to set a budget of how much you would like to spend on your wedding cake. Is this amount firm, or is the budget flexible with a little wiggle room? There are several ways to stay within a realistic budget. If you are having a large wedding, you might consider a smaller tiered cake and have sheet cakes in the kitchen for the caterers to cut and serve for you. This is one of the most economical options. Cupcakes are a wonderful, whimsical way to serve your guests cake. They are usually less expensive than a tiered cake, and the guests can help themselves, saving you a cake cutting fee. If you are like most brides, you probably have a Pinterest board filled with beautiful wedding cakes and fanciful ideas for your big day... Remember that extra details on your cake can add up. A cake decorated in
butter cream frosting will be less expensive than a cake covered in fondant. Gum paste flowers and embellishments, hand painted elements, or gold leaf will also increase the cost of your cake. If there is a design you just love, consider having that element on just one tier of the cake to help keep you within your budget. A simple cake adorned with fresh flowers, or a custom cake top from Etsy can be beautiful and elegant. Choose flowers that are in season and just use them as an accent or a pop of color. Your florist can help you pick out flowers that will compliment your cake and wedding decor. A cake stand can add height to your wedding cake. This can be a silver or gold stand from the bakery you are getting your cake from or from the rental store you are using for other wedding items. If you like the rustic vibe, a slab of wood can be the base for your cake. Make sure to use a level to ensure that the slab of wood is even. A tiered cake needs to be on a level surface for stability. There are several resources to find someone to make your cake for the big day. Bridal shows can be a great way to meet the bakers, sample their products and ask them
questions. Of course bridal magazines, like ENGAGED! are also a wonderful reference that you can hold on to the magazine and refer back to as you need to. Online wedding sites are helpful as well. When choosing your baker, it might be tempting to use a friend of a friend or a family member to save money, but do you trust that they will be able to create the wedding cake you are dreaming of? Will the cake be structurally sound? Choose a baker that has a good reputation, and be sure to check out pictures of their own work and testimonies from past clients. With a little planning, the wedding cake of your dreams, can become a reality and make your wedding day the best day ever! VIDEOGRAPHY
A VIDEO
CAPTURING your special day by booking a wedding videographer may seem like a no-brainer. However, when it comes to hiring one in addition to a wedding photographer, brides tend to be on different sides of the decision. For us, we love to think that our unique, handcrafted wedding films are made and will be cherished for a lifetime. When I ask brides about what they wish they would have done differently when planning their wedding, I find that hiring a wedding videographer is on the top of the list. To us, what better way to spend some time together on your anniversary than to watch your wedding film! There are multiple reasons we think you should hire a wedding videographer! Let’s go over a few of the ones I tell brides the most often: Your wedding is one of the most memorable days of your entire life. It is one of the few days where you get to be the focus and are surrounded by all the family and friends who love you. It is a day where you have worked hard to create an atmosphere that is reflective of you, your spouse, and your life together. A wedding film is able to capture this important day in a way that photos simply can’t. Your walk down the aisle and your soon to be husband’s emotions as you inch closer. The joy, tears and smiles as you say your vows to one another. Film also takes you right back to your first dance with audio, atmosphere and movement from that exact moment. A reason we hear most often as to why a bride is glad that they hired a videographer is that the day simply flies by so
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
fast. Your wedding day is so planned out with timelines that everything becomes a blur. A wedding film is the perfect way to relive every detail of your big day. Video can capture awe inspiring moments such as the first time you see yourself in the mirror all dressed on your wedding day. The moment your mother or bridesmaid puts the veil in your hair. The speeches from the best main or maid of honor will be captured in photos but video will capture the heartfelt words that they said to you. During your wedding day all eyes are on you. We handcraft every video using different, unique angles making it possible to see your day through another set of “eyes.” Watch just as everyone else did how you are being held in your husband’s arms as you dance or cutting the cake and trying to sneak a little smudge of icing off his face. Simply put that a wedding film encapsulates your entire day, from start to finish, so you can relive each and every moment and emotion for a lifetime. Make sure that when your day is over, you don’t have any regrets about anything. 3 Tree Films is a husband and wife team Josh & Jessica Walters. They specialize in filming wedding celebrations and capturing authentic emotion, grace, and laughter. They handcraft every film to be just as unique as the couple in them. DESTINATIONS & HONEYMOONS
HONEYMOON
WHEN thinking of a honeymoon destination, do you dream of something that’s not the typical Caribbean beach? Does staying in fairytale castles or romantic manors, discovering traditional pubs, experiencing a different culture sound appealing? Then your dream honeymoon to the Emerald Isle is waiting. Ireland is the perfect destination for any couple seeking picturesque countrysides and landscapes, perhaps discovering your heritage, listening to Gaelic music and welcoming conversation with the locals. Exploring the enchanting capital city of Dublin with a visit to Saint Patricks Cathedral, the Guiness Storehouse, Jameson Distillery or a museum is a must. Then it’s time to move out of the city. Remember when renting a vehicle, you drive on the opposite side of the road than in the US and on the opposite side of the car. The roads also become more like charming county lanes. This can be challenging but a wonderful way to see the spectacular countryside and experience the local culture. If you love the outdoors, plan on spending time in the Killarney region. This area offers majestic mountains, gorgeous lakes, waterfalls, lush forest and a variety of wildlife.
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
You can explore by car, bike, boat, by foot or even by a romantic horse drawn carriage. The Ring of Kerry is something not to be missed. As you move up north on the western side of the country, you will want to visit the Dingle Peninsula, the magical little town of Dingle and the dramatic Cliffs of Moher just to mention a few.
New Hope MORTGAGE
Ireland has much to offer with a variety of interests. You can visit where the Game of Thrones has been filmed, kiss the Blarney Stone, see how Waterford Crystal is created and eat the traditional shepherd’s pie with a pint of Guiness. You can choose between various accommodations including castles, manors, cozy bed-n-breakfasts or hotels. Your dream honeymoon can be customized just for you! A honeymoon is an opportunity to explore a new destination and create memories that will last a lifetime! Tina Brunck is the owner of Travel Smart. Travel Smart has been in business for 26 years. STATIONERY
INVITATIONS
Your Way!
WEDDING invitations have changed dramatically in the last several years. Formal panel cards with a few embellishments have largely been replaced with invitations that reflect the personalities of the bride and groom and set the tone for the wedding. Themes are often conveyed in the invitation and carried out in programs, welcome signs, seating charts and party favors. Brides are often at odds with their mothers when it comes to the style of invitations to be sent; Mom wants a traditional formal invitation while the bride longs for a rustic or casual look. In most cases, merging each of their visions into one can be achieved with carefully chosen wording and a great graphic designer.
38
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
Answering the following questions before meeting with your stationer will help clarify vision and save time. What is the theme or style desired? What are the wedding colors? Where/when will the wedding take place? How many do you plan to invite? What is your printing budget? The use of envelopes has changed dramatically too, with the introduction of the “all-in-one invitation, which includes a tear off RSVP card and requires no outer envelope. Less formal brides have chosen this option time and again and still get the personalized look they desire.
I’m often asked why anyone would consider using double envelopes. Quite simply, the inner envelope is used to spell out exactly who is invited to your event. The following examples are options to consider: Dr. & Mrs. John Smith (formal) John & Shirley (close friends or family) John, Shirley and Amanda (daughter is also invited) A great time saver is to have your envelopes addressed by the printer. These too can be personalized with fonts and graphics that further the look of your stationery package Rita Joest has been a Marketing Consultant at AlphaGraphics for 17 years and has worked with countless brides, moms and wedding consultants to achieve the desired look for their invitations. BRIDAL FASHION
BEACH WEDDING
Photos by Kiersten Grant Photography
Beach weddings offer stunning backdrops, breezy temperatures, and a relaxed atmosphere that brides and guests both love, but dressing for one can leave the bride and her party ready to throw in the towel. Have no fear! With these quick tips, any bride can be comfortable and gorgeous on her big day. When shopping for a bridal gown, remember that light fabrics are best in this setting. Chiffon, lightweight lace, and even a silky satin leave room to breathe while still maintaining a formal look. These dresses are typically less structured with fewer layers and crinolines to steam and carry throughout the sand. Remember that a long train will soil quickly. They create stunning photos, but will require a bustle through the rest of the evening. Shop without shoes, as you will most likely not be wearing four-inch heels in the sand. A beach bride should confidently carry herself barefoot in whichever dress she chooses.
Find a gown that accents the features that should be showcased on a beach. Short gowns are completely acceptable, as well as dresses with deep backs and straps to show off that gorgeous tan skin. If a bride is rocking a tan in January, she better show it off! The traveling aspect is another to plan for. Be prepared by bringing a steamer or confirming that the hotel has one available. Remember that this dress will be traveling and will most likely get a little wrinkled. Don’t let that cause a wrinkle in the wedding day, though! Any bride is sure to enjoy her day in the sun (and sand) with guidance from her friends, family, and bridal experts. EXPERIENCE
EXPERIENCE THE MORNING of your wedding - the flurry of everything going on, and everyone wants one thing: COFFEE. Do something for your bridal party - and yourself. Imagine how nice it would be to have a real barista making delicious coffee for you in the comfort of your own home (or at the salon, or hotel, or at the church). This is the River City's Pour Over Coffee Bar. The ritual of the pour over is like a meditation: There’s no machine in your way, no flashing green lights, no electric power cords. Just you and a few simple tools. The final cup is reminiscent of one from a drip coffeemaker, but noticeably more delicate and complex. Observe the bloom, experience the first trace of coffeedrunk steam, notice how the spiral of the pour alters the final cup. This simple experience gets you in tune with your coffee. You have a perfect cup - just for you. If you’ve never had a cup of pour-over coffee before, you’re missing out on a great cup. More meticulous than drip coffee, while brighter and cleaner than French press brew - pour-over coffee is often seen as the best in the realm of coffee snobs.
Looking for something unique for your wedding reception that can also double as a favor? Your bridal brunch? How about a delicious pour over bar with customized coffee mugs with your names and wedding date!
Love coffee but want a little more flavor: at River City, we house-make all of our syrups and can bring those with us as well!
Getting married in the summer? We can make iced pour-overs as well! We also have a delicious variety of teas.
Want your coffee delivered but don't want us in your way? We can deliver cambos of coffee for you and your bridal party as well!
We really have something for everyone. Contract Heather today to customize your package and discuss what we might be able to do to make your wedding day a little more delicious. Husband and wife, Clint & Heather Vaught own the Rivercity Mercantile & Coffee Co. in Downtown Evansville. Named the Evansville Readers Choice Best Gift Shop-Platinum, the smell of amazing coffee and unique items from over 50 local artists and makers greet guests everyday.

PLANNING
WHY HIRE
WHY Hire a Wedding Planner?... I’m so glad you asked! While there are several reasons, these are some of my top: it saves you time, minimizes your overall stress, weddings require on-site management, planners help you stay on track with your timeline (and build your timeline!), and most importantly, it is an investment in your peace of mind. Photographers provide you with incredible photos, your florist provides beautiful bouquets and centerpieces, and your baker creates a delicious cake (or cupcake or macaron, whatever you want, it’s your day after all!). While your wedding planner provides the intangible, but oh-so-important, peace of mind.
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
If you have a planner working with you, your photos will be concrete images of your beloved memories with those closest to you, not a memory of you worrying about how you were doing on time. Your planner will work with your florist to make sure your bouquet is ready for detail shots and your vases are transferred to your reception venue after your ceremony. When it’s time to cut the cake, your planner will be sure the knife and napkins are ready. All of the little details that go into making your wedding plans come to life - that’s what our team is there for. Every couple and wedding are unique, so it’s
important to find a planner that offers exactly what you need. Your planner, like several of your other vendors, aren’t just vendors. They’re your leader, your confidant, and best case scenario, your friend. The best way to find out if you need or want a planner? Let’s have a conversation - any planner you meet will love to grab a glass of wine or coffee to chat wedding and help you decide if hiring a planner is the right decision for you. In the meantime, enjoy your engagement - cheers! Photos by Rachel Mathew Photography

HIGH SCHOOL sweethearts, Hayley & Cole have been best friends since they were 15 years old. Their wedding day was a culmination of years of waiting, excitement and many wishes. During college, they dated long distance but solidified their love with weekend trips, traveling and creating priceless memories as they finished their schooling. Their wedding day was a reflection of the fun, joyful feelings they have for each other. A beautiful color palette of pinks, rose reds and whites gave their wedding a romantic ambiance. While their unexpected dinner of crepes, waffles and biscuits were a hit with their guests. Surrounded by family and friends, their big day was a longtime wish finally fulfilled.

VENUE OPTIONS
USING TENTS
YOU are now engaged and so excited to start the wedding planning process. You start talking with family and friends and learn that so and so is having theirs here and what’s their name is having theirs there, and the more you talk, you learn that almost everyone is using the same venues. You can only dress up four walls so much before you realize that they all start to look like each other. So you start to think about other options when someone suggests having your wedding outdoors. You’ve never thought about it, but are nervous about all the what ifs. What if……it rains? They say rain on your wedding day is good luck, right? All joking aside, rain can definitely damper the mood, especially if you are planning an outdoor event. We always recommend having a plan B option when going outdoors. If you are wanting to have everything outdoors (no tent), then plan B needs to be a backup tent. If you have a tent for the reception but want an outdoor ceremony then plan B is that you get married on the dance floor under the reception tent. Even if you have to use your plan B, you can still create the magic and look you were going for.
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
What if…..it’s too hot or too cold? Just because you are not getting married in May, June, September, or October doesn’t mean you can’t have an outdoor event. The beauty of a tent is that you can heat or cool depending on the weather. And you can even decide the day of what option you might need to use. What if….we don’t have a property to put the tent? There are lots of places around the Tristate area that can accommodate both large and small tented ceremony and receptions. State parks are always a great place to start calling, and usually you aren’t going to have any limitations on what vendors you can use as well. Churches are another great resource to call about using property. Especially if you are a member, many churches will have an area that a tent can be put up. It’s also important to keep in mind that you don’t need a huge area to put a tent up. Especially if you just need to cover food, dancing, or maybe a band or DJ.
What if….we really like the idea of using a tent, but already have our reception venue picked out? Tents don’t have to be used just for the ceremony or reception. Many couples are now throwing engagement parties where they do more of a backyard casual gathering. Tents are a great way to accommodate everyone without renting out another venue. Bridal showers are another great time to use a tent. A simple 20 x 20 frame tent can be put up in most backyards and will accommodate up to 40 people. Again, you don’t need a huge area to setup, and you can completely personalize the space for you. Amber Hoffherr works for Bauer’s Tents and Party Rentals and is 6 th generation of the family owned business. She thrives on the attention to detail that brides want and enjoys helping brides design their décor and day. She meets with all potential brides and will help make your event one of a kind. When you don’t find her working, you will find her spending time with her husband, two kids, and three dogs.
RIVER VALLEY REAL WEDDING
LOVE and Adventure have defined Claire and Pablo’s relationship since the beginning. The first time they met was when Claire auditioned for a play in Owensboro that Pablo was helping direct. Claire didn't get the part but came away having caught the eye of the man she would fall in love with. A few cast parties later, Pablo got up the courage to ask Claire out on a date and began their relationship. While dating, at times, they would spend many months apart while Claire worked in London. Both feel the time away only strengthened their love and when they would reunite, it was so special and full of adventure as they traveled Europe together. For their wedding, it was important to both of them to incorporate the color, traditions and décor of Argentina, where Pablo grew up. Woven fabrics, bright flowers, bohemian touches and whimsical décor all came together to create a one-of-a-kind wedding filled with details of their travels, their personalities and their unique story.

RIVER VALLEY REAL WEDDING
FAITH, family and love were the guiding forces behind Demi & Austin’s wedding and relationship. Meeting while working at a local Hacienda restaurant, they quickly realized their friendship was meant to be more. Both feel that early in their relationship they knew they were soul mates but it wasn’t until a mission trip to Honduras that they experienced a deeper love than ever before, culminating in Austin proposing to Demi on a mountaintop. When planning their wedding, they knew they wanted to have a bohemian, vintage vibe. Tons of greenery, floral and lace provided the base of the décor, while Demi’s mother and grandmother’s antiques and china made for special accessories with meaning. A table holding photos and mementos of their travels and great times together greeted guests as they walked in their reception. But, the most special moment of their day, was when they departed the reception surrounded by just their close family and friends with lit candles creating a precious, solemn moment of family support and love as they left to start their married life together.

MARRIAGE
KEEP THE FIRES Your wedding day will come, and everything will be beautiful. You will enjoy it much more if you have not stressed yourself out before hand. Take care of yourself, and you will find yourself dancing the night away with your new spouse loving the new life you are beginning together.
THERE are times you feel winter will never end. You go to work in the dark and go home in the dark. It may seem that your energy level is low. You may just want to go home and snuggle under the blankets. So, in order to keep your relationship feeling alive and fresh, you might have to put more effort into your time together. Here are a few ideas to help you keep the last cold days of this season fun and warm. Have a game night. Whether just the two of you or you invite your friends, playing games can be a way to stay warm and have fun. As you laugh at the antics of the game, sip your got chocolate and listen to the fire popping. It is a great way to learn more about each other. Laughing the evening away is a great way to relieve the stress of the day. If you are willing to be cold for a time, go ice skating. ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
Bundle up warm and head to the rink. You can try all the moves you have while skating in each other’s arm. Take time to twirl around the rink hand in hand. You will be there to catch each other if one of you takes a spill. End the night getting your favorite cup of warm liquid to warm yourself up again. Take a day off from work if you have the time. If you both can take the day off that is even better. Take time to pamper yourselves. Go get a massage together. If that is out of your budget, then give each other a massage. Having someone touch and soothe those aching muscles will make your day brighter. You will also make your significant other’s day special. Everyone has to eat and cooking together can be fun. Take time to cook a meal together. It doesn’t have to
be a fancy feast. Making a pizza together can be entertaining. As you pull the dough for the crust, you can relate what your most memorable meal has been. Add the toppings as you sample them, and you have a celebration for the taste buds. You will not forget the fun and laughter you had together. If getting to know each other is what you are seeking, spend the evening indoors talking to each other. Ask each other questions about your childhood. Find out what each other’s favorite thing to do in the winter. If you want to go deeper, ask what secret your partner has been keeping from you. Talk about your joys and fears. The days can be cold and dark outside, but just know, spring weather is around the corner. So take these first cold days of the season and create some fun. Have meaningful discussions and find out what each other likes. Before you know it, the days will be longer and lighter and your relationship will be stronger. FATE brought Lori and John together. At the Indianapolis airport in 2014, both happened to be waiting for outbound flights. She, back to her residency in Iowa and he, back to work in Florida. Seeing another person within their close vicinity they connected online and began a conversation that would turn into a lifelong commitment. For a year they maintained a long distance relationship until John surprised Lori and flew their entire family to New York where he popped the question and she said “Yes! When choosing a wedding site they looked at several venues halfway between their homes in Indiana and Florida but no place could compete with Lori’s family home on the lake surrounded by 125 acres of forest. Family and friends all pitched in to build the new lake deck and create the natural ambiance of their beautiful, intimate outdoor wedding. Incorporating antiques of her grandmother and a hand-made cross to serve as the centerpiece of their ceremony illustrated the importance of faith and family in their lives. Saying their vows and celebrating their marriage among the trees and in front of those they love best made for a day in paradise.

French Lick Resort
HOW did a sprawling resort soar to prominence in a locale tucked away off the beaten path? A simple three -story wood-framed hotel built in the mid-1800s is the starting point for this story, which recently added another restorative chapter to its rich history. French Lick Resort is where old-world elegance overlaps with modern charm within a 3,000-acre property that has attracted visitors to this hidden gem of southcentral Indiana for almost 175 years. The centerpieces are the two world-class hotels: French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel. The complementary components combine to make it the vacation destination that it is: 45 holes of golf, including two courses by famed designers Pete Dye and Donald Ross; a relaxing spa at each hotel; and a spacious casino, just for starters. The history behind it all adds yet another captivating layer to French Lick Resort’s ever-evolving timeline.

In 1845, William Bowles built French Lick Springs Hotel, which attracted guests in droves to partake in the “miracle waters” of the area’s sulfur springs, which were touted to cure everything from fevers to arthritis. Five years later, John Lane saw the success of the French Lick Hotel and decided to build his own health resort just one mile up the road. West Baden Springs Hotel rivaled French Lick with posh amenities like an opera house, double-decker pony and bicycle track, and full-sized baseball field where major league teams visited for spring training. After a fire destroyed it, West Baden Springs Hotel rebuilt on a grand scale to feature a 200-foot dome that was the world’s largest at the time and dubbed the “Eighth Wonder of the World.” Bolstered by the underground gambling scene of the time, French Lick and West Baden became nationally renowned as a playground for actors, socialites and even presidents. The Stock Market Crash and an illegal
gambling raid took a toll on the hotels — particularly West Baden, which closed to the public for 72 years and started to crumble near disrepair. But thanks to the efforts and investments from preservationists Bill and Gayle Cook, both hotels sprang back to life as a $600 million restoration in 2006-07 returned both hotels to their original grandeur and also united them as French Lick Resort. Once again, tourism is booming in the area. To start booking your own event at French Lick Resort, contact (866) 706-4354 or groupsalesdept@frenchlick.com.

BUYING
FIRST comes love, then comes marriage… then comes buying a house together! But wait. You’ve been so busy with the wedding planning, how prepared are you to transition from that dream wedding to your dream home? The more planning you do now, the better off and less stressed you’ll be in the long run if you follow these simple steps. 1. Familiarize yourself with your credit. Take the time now to get to know your credit history, and make sure that all of your credit reports are accurate. If there are any discrepancies, start working to resolve them. 2. Meet with a lender. This isn’t as scary as it seems. They want your business
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
as much as you would like to get the loan. So be honest and up front with all of your answers to their questions (note that if you have credit issues, most lenders can work with you to pull yourself out of it), and work to secure a pre-approval letter that will determine what your price range is. Make sure that it is a true preapproval letter and not just a pre-qualification, though. The difference is when the lender verifies your income documents and vs. just checking your credit. 3. Select your real estate professional. I recommend choosing someone who is a member of the National Association of REALTORS®… But how does this person get paid? For houses listed in the area listing system, the seller pays the buyer’s agent commission, so there is no cost to you to be represented by a buyer’s agent. A buyer's agent's responsibilities include helping
you find the right property, helping you negotiate your offer, recommending other professionals, and being the buffer between you and the seller.
another round of negotiations on who will fix what, especially if your bank requires the repairs be made prior to closing.
4. House hunting Once you have determined your price range, you and your buyer’s agent will narrow down your wishlist properties to the ones you want to visit.
7. Closing This is when you see the light at the end of the tunnel. Closing day will arrive, and since you watched your credit, you were up front with your lending institution and were forthcoming with all of the paperwork they requested from you, once you sign on the dotted line, you will be the proud owner of your new home!
5. Making an offer/acceptance of the offer When you find “the one,” now it’s time to negotiate the offer. This process can go back and forth between buyer and seller many times, or it might be accepted on the first try. Everything depends on who much you offer and how willing the seller is to accept. Once it is accepted, though, you are then passed along to the bank and the title company. 6. Paperwork and inspection Typically the next 30-45 days include you working with your lender and title company to iron out all necessary paperwork to finalize your loan. Also during the start of this time will be your inspection. Rarely does a house inspection come back with nothing wrong, so be prepared to start
Congratulations on your engagement, and good luck with your planning. Anything that I can do to be of help with your wedding or your house hunt, please don’t ever hesitate to let me know! Photo by Sarah Wellmeier BEAUTY is in the details, and your bridal bouquet is one important detail that shouldn’t be overlooked. As simple as it may seem, the bride’s bouquet is more than just a bunch of flowers to hold for one whole day. Bridal bouquets have evolved from their original traditions: symbolizing luck and fertility, or to simply drive away evil spirits. These days, the bridal bouquet is a means of self-expression and stands as the most important accessory. Serving as the centerpiece for the entire wedding, the bridal bouquet will be the most photographed feature (next to the bride and groom, of course!). Creating a bouquet that reflects your personality while taking into consideration your mood and theme to your special day is crucial. Looking to turn your bouquet up a notch? Here are some tips! Think Outside The Garden Try mixing in unconventional elements. Feathers are a great option for adding dramatic effect and an interesting silhouette. Big pros to using feathers are their inexpensive price tag and they are well, as light as a feather – add as many as you want! The perfect contrast to a soft bloom, seed pods are also a great element to incorporate. Scabiosa, lotus, and poppy pods are of the most popular and are a perfect way to add a unique texture in your bouquet. Love succulents, but want to try something different? While similar to succulents, the air plant (Tillandsia) has a more wild structure – add to create an airy and whimsical effect.
Farm-to-Bouquet Nothing says unique like adding fruits or vegetables to your bouquet! Not only are they brightly colored and inexpensive but the shapes and textures make the perfect addition to any bouquet. Kale, cabbage, and Swiss chard all make great alternatives to lush foliage. Artichokes, pomegranates, and figs all portray a bolder statement. Baby pineapples and dried chili peppers are just a few that I’ve used to make a bouquet more interesting. Go Bold or Go Home From shapes to colors, there are so many ways to turn up the volume on your bouquet. Consider ditching the traditional round shape, and try an airy horizontal shape or an effortless cascading bouquet. Don’t be afraid to use color – be open minded to new color palettes and different types of flowers. Want to add a dramatic statement? Try wrapping long ribbons to your bouquet. Kick it up a notch by trying a patterned ribbon. The possibilities are endless. I pride myself in creating unique bouquets that stand out and make a statement. If you are interesting in taking your bouquet to the next level, KD Décor + Floral is the perfect fit for you! I look forward to making your vision a reality. Katy Doersam is the owner of KD Décor in Southern Illinois. Being fairly new to the wedding scene, she prides herself on having a fresh perspective and specializes in unique and creative arrangements. Incorporating unexpected elements is her claim to fame.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR
SELECTING an amazing wedding photographer is crucial. I have had so many brides call and say they wanted to book us as their photographers because they feel something when they see our photos from past weddings. After the guests have gone home and the couple settles into their new life together, looking back on their wedding photographs revives their memories because the photos had captured the raw, honest moments from their special day. When they tell me that they can look at those photos and become enveloped with emotion, that is honestly the most incredible compliment I could ever receive. Obviously, perfect lighting and thoughtful posing are essential. But emotion is everything to me. So when I first meet with a couple to discuss their day, this is what I want them to realize. Are we on the same page? Do our styles and visions match? I know my work is not what everyone believes to be their ideal vision. Not everyone loves our emotional, organic, moody style… and that is OK! You most likely have a clear vision of what kind of wedding you want, whether it be classic, modern, or organic and ethereal, etc. Find a photographer who shoots in your style because many photographers have different specialties. It’s all about personal preference — you just need to pinpoint yours. It wouldn’t make sense to hire a photographer who shoots and edits with bold colors and very formal styling if you dream of an organic wedding in the woods with a photojournalistic touch. This is truly one of the most important aspects of choosing a photographer. Are the posed shots innovative or do they feel like the same old same old? And a biggie: Do subjects look comfortable or stiff while posing? Part of a photographer’s job is to ease any anxiety you feel about having your photo taken. They should make it feel effortless, and you should have fun. This also means you should trust your photographer and let them do their job. Let them guide you! If you love their work, then trust that they will give the same creativity to you as they do others. Of
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
course, we welcome a few requests…but if we are focusing on 20+ Pinterest boards you have pinned, we will not have time to create our own work, essentially making us just the button pusher to the couple’s Pinterest boards. This is why it is imperative that your styles match. Don’t be afraid to ask the potential photographer questions. Ask your photographer what would be the best time for your ceremony - especially if it is outdoors. This is huge! Make sure they understand lighting and can tell you exactly how your photos will look depending on the time of day. They should be able to help you create the perfect timeline for the number of images you will be getting. For me, if someone is having a sunset ceremony and wants outdoor photos, then it is necessarythat we do most of the photos ahead of time and plan the ceremony exactly one hour before sunset. I help them through the entire process and create a wedding timeline for them so everyone knows where we need them and when. The best way to learn about a photographer is to ask past brides about their experience in working with them. Did they receive their images within a timely manner? (Usually 6-8 weeks is standard). Was the photographer on time and did they keep the day running smoothly? Did the couple get the images they were hoping for…or even get them at all? As much as I hate to admit it, there are “photographers” out there who do not run a legal business or have a business license. Some even promote their business by using images they didn’t even take themselves. Make sure what you see is what you are going to get. Ask to see full galleries of weddings and not just a few favorites. This will help you determine if ALL of their work is cohesive and matches the few favorites they choose to share on social media.
When deciding your photography budget, make sure you thoughtfully consider everything you plan to spend money on for your special day. Do you really want to spend the extra money buying frivolous items for the reception that will only get tossed in the trash or other details that won’t matter in the long run? Or do you want to invest in your photographer and have meaningful artwork to enjoy for years and then later pass down to your children and grandchildren? Wedding photography is an investment and is the one major area I encourage couples to splurge. You are putting your trust into the photographer to capture the most special moments in your life. Make sure that photographer spends several weeks perfecting the images so that the story of your day is beautifully captured. It’s not a cheap or quick job. And if it is...that’s a red flag! So often I hear, “I wish we would have spent more to get the photographer we really wanted and not settled.” Be confident you are investing in someone who cares about capturing your wedding so you can continue to enjoy the visual memories for years to come. Because on their special day, the Bride and Groom are often distracted and the little…and not so little…details can be missed. So ultimately, it’s your photographer who should diligently and thoughtfully capture it all for you. When you see your photos for the first time, the story of your our wedding day should be breathtakingly beautiful and complete. The tears and laughter that you missed will forever be preserved.
