We still cannot stop talking about the epic bouquet designed by Katy Doersan, who came onto our radar out of nowhere. Cake Topper CHOICES by Nikki Davis Photo by Esther Bloom Photography
CAKE toppers. They are the pinnacle of your dessert. They are a focal point of your dĂŠcor, but how do you select something that will be meaningful and cohesive to your day? Start with family. Do you have any heirlooms that can grace your cake? Do you have anything significant to your family heritage or significant to your loved ones that would be appropriate? My mom and I collect Hummel figurines. Her love of them started when her uncle used to bring them back for her from Germany when she was little, and her collection continued to grow and grow. As I hit each milestone in my life, she would gift me one, which eventually
4
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
included one for my wedding. I naturally decided to top my cake with a Hummel figurine. Follow a theme. Do you have a particular shape, animal, color, flower or color worked throughout your wedding? From cats to dogs to roses to hydrangeas and more, anything can be used on top of your cake. Live flowers, silk flowers, plastic animals, metal cut-outs‌ they all make appropriate toppers for your cake and highlight your wedding decorations.
Try DIY. Fimo is your friend… at least for some folks it is. Fimo is a bakable clay that allows you to create a custom designed topper of your choice, be it a miniature of you and your groom, two birds, the Robert Indiana LOVE design, or whatever your heart desires (I even made a custom groom’s cake topper out of Fimo for my wedding). A DIY cake topper might also be one that you hand paint as well. Think wood, or you can create one at a local ceramics shop! Your only limit is your imagination, and Pinterest can go a long way to give you that spark of creativity! Want something personalized, but aren’t crafty? Etsy is a fabulous resource to have something handmade or lasercrafted. Whether it’s something as simple as Mr. & Mrs., your new last name, or even your silhouette (or a fun caricature one), there are many artists that specialize in making something special to add to your cake. You can also find wire toppers, clay toppers, wood, crystal, paper ones, and more!

So whatever you are searching for, make it fun and special for you and your spouse-to-be. It will be a focal point of the reception and featured in a fair amount of photographs. Choose wisely and make sure after the wedding, it is packed carefully as a cherished keepsake of your big day! Photo by Equinox Photography

VIDEOGRAPHY
WEDDING FILM Capturing Epic Memories
ONCE you have decided on the filmmaker of your dreams
and found one that matches you and your fiancé’s style and personality, how do you get the best film possible? Here are some tips that will make your wedding film the best it can be. There are few things that can make your wedding film more personal than writing your own vows or writing letters to each other and reading them for the camera. The spoken word goes a long way in driving the narrative of many films, and your own words will make the biggest impact. We understand that many churches may not allow personal vows,
6
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
and that’s why we especially recommend letters in those instances. Going along with the idea of the spoken word, alert your maid of honor, best man, or anyone giving a toast or speech at your reception that it will all be recorded. Hopefully this will encourage them to put a little more thought in their speech and keep them from the embarrassing college stories that nobody wants to relive. This may seem self explanatory but as filmmakers, we follow the action and can only film people who are present. Make sure the
VIDEOGRAPHY
people who mean the most to you are present during key points of the day. If you have a parent, grandparent, child, or best friend, and they are not actively part of the day, odds are they won’t make it in your film. Even though we try to make a spot for all VIPs, if they aren’t present, they may not be featured in the film. Make sure to allow for more portrait session time. The modern filmmaker is more than just an uncle Bob filming what happens from the back of the room. We take a more active role in making you look amazing by using cool

VIDEOGRAPHY
techniques and tools. The epic shots you see on highlight films take time to compose and shoot. We work alongside your photographer during these sessions, and most couples forget to add time to the portrait session in order to accommodate both creatives. This part of the day is not only where you get those highlight worthy shots but also the canvases that will grace the walls of your home, and you do not want this rushed. And finally trust the filmmaker you hired. We may ask you to do crazy things, climb a hay bale, walk down the middle of a street, or kiss a lot, but we have a vision for your final film and want to give you something epic. We try to push the boundaries at every wedding and do something we have never done before, and this usually means a strange request. But trust Photos by Eyenamics us, it will be epic. Garrette and Amber Baird are from the international multi award winning husband and wife filmmaking team, Eyenamics. Dedicated to improving the industry through advanced education and providing clients with beautifully crafted wedding stories, they do not simply create wedding videos, but cinematic films that will immerse you into your wedding day and once again allow you to relive those emotions attached to the memories. With over 500 weddings filmed, Eyenamics strives to capture the intimate moments of your day, and their experience enables them to anticipate when those amazing moments happen.

ON OUR RADAR
TIMBERVIEW FLOWER FARM TIMBERVIEW Flower Farm is located on 20 rolling acres northwest of Evansville, IN. Found at 4501 Orchard Road, it is owned by Floyd and Mary Ellen Damm and run with lots of help from family and friends. Established in the early 1980’s, the farm has evolved into a year-round flower business. Late winter through April, seeds are started and plans are made for the year. Classes using dried flowers are held, arrangements and dried flower bouquets are made for the coming season and transplanting of seedlings follows. The farm specializes in tuberoses, zinnias, cockscomb, celosia, and many other garden flowers. Seasonal flower availability begins in mid-May and continues through October. Flowers are available directly from the farm, at local farmer’s markets and area Schnucks grocery stores during the season as well as at River City Mercantile where a year round display is found. Timberview is your area source for fresh garden flowers for weddings, parties, home and other special events. They have over twenty years of experience in growing flowers, and they do all the work from seeding to delivery. It is a family run business with help from grandkids and more. Their professionally designed coolers assure the best
26
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
environment for flowers as they pick them. Within a few days (or the same day) they are in your home or event to enjoy! You can order their flowers in bulk to put together yourself or you can have them do your arrangements to your specification. They do work with area florists – both in providing fresh garden flowers to them and in obtaining from them varieties that do not grow well here but that are important to a customer’s design. Timberview offers a selection of dried flowers – the perfect answer to a more permanent arrangement from “Mother Nature.” They personally dry hydrangea, cockscomb, celosia, gomphrena, yarrow, lavender and some grasses. They work in conjunction with another flower farm to have additional dried flower varieties, which do not grow well in our area. They also offer classes – March and October-November where you can make an arrangement and for the summer months invite groups to tour the flowers and make their own fresh arrangement. At Timberview, they also sell bulbs and rent vintage items for weddings and other special occasions. This is a working farm so there are no specific hours. Appointments/phone calls are needed to come out or for certain bouquet needs. BEAUTY AND WELLNESS
SAY “I DO” TO
Waxing
EVERY soon-to-be bride has their beauty check list for the wedding, including hair, facials, make-up, nails, spray tan, and massage… but have you added waxing to your list? So many hear the word “wax” and immediately answer “NO WAY!” or “I could NEVER do that!” Here I will answer the most popular questions I get from new waxing clients in hopes to open your mind to the idea of waxing and lessen any anxieties you may have about considering waxing for your wedding day and honeymoon. I have been a Licensed Esthetician for over 10 years and have waxed hundreds of ladies. I have my own beautiful spa suite on the North side of Evansville where I offer full body waxing and sugaring hair removal services, Brazilians being by far my most popular service booked by clients. I typically wax anywhere from 6-8 Brazilian clients in any given day! I also provide Skincare services: Customized Facials, Microdermabrasion, Peels, Dermaplaining, Lash Lift & Tint, Brow Tint, and Norvell Sunless Spray Tans. Now that you know a little about my background, let’s get started!
What is the difference between waxing and shaving? When you shave, you are creating a blunt razor cut into the mid hair shaft at skin level. Therefore, once the hair starts to grow more, it does not take long to notice it rising up past the skin. You’ll notice it appears darker and thicker as well. That is due to the blunt razor cut at the thickest part of the hair. However, when you wax, hair is removed by the root, meaning your body has to make an entirely new hair beneath the skin surface- and lucky for us, that takes a while. Hence the smooth skin for longer period of time! (Approximately up to three weeks!) As that new hair grows in, it is finer, thinner, and less dense than the shaved hair. Why is waxing the most ideal form of hair removal for a bride? Brides have so much on their minds leading up to their big day, daily shaving and all the irritation that comes along with it should be the last thing you have to worry about! With proper, professional waxing you should experience up to three weeks of smooth skin! Can you imagine no shaving for three weeks!?! That would include the time on your honeymoon! How soon before the wedding should I schedule my appointment? I always recommend coming in for at least one to two waxes prior to your wedding, to get your hair all on the same growth cycle. When you are shaving daily, your hair growth cycles are sporadic and occasionally there will be some hairs that will be too short to wax the first time. Typically with the first wax, I
28
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
tell my clients it is not unusual to see some regrowth happen within the first week or so. Leave those hairs alone. Don’t shave so they’re long enough at your next appointment, then we will get all hairs on the same cycle. After we get them on the same cycle. As long as you are not shaving between appointments, you will have smooth skin for up to three weeks; and one-two weeks to regrow and you’ll be ready for a wax again! Does it hurt, and what can I do prior to appointment to lessen any discomfort? So I have good news and bad news. I’ll start with the bad- I quit lying to my clients years ago. Yes, there is discomfort. Anytime you are removing hair by the root, it’s not going to be sunshine and rainbows. Now, the good news! There are some things that I can do to help with the discomfort, and things that you can do to help as well! You will want to watch your intake of caffeine the day of your appointment as well as anything that may thin your blood or increase your blood volume; as the hair root is close to the blood stream. Do not drink alcohol prior to your appointment- this is a myth and does not make it hurt less. It can actually increase the discomfort. If you are close to your period or pregnant, your elevated hormones and blood volume can make you more sensitive as well. If you are on any kind of Retin A or prescription medication from a doctor/dermatologist, you cannot be waxed. Take deep breaths, and I will also ask for you to assist in holding the skin taught/tight when I pull. After the pull I apply pressure with my hand. I also retail “No Scream Cream,” which is an FDA approved topical numbing cream you can apply 30-45 minutes prior to your appointment, and it will take up to 80% of your discomfort away! (this must be purchased prior to your appointment, and can be used on all areas of the body for waxing). How long do I have to grow out my hair for my waxing appointment? Hair must be grown out to ¼ - ½ of an inch long; erring on the side of long. That is about the size of a grain of rice. Depending on how fast or slow your hair grows; it’s approximately onetwo weeks of growth. What kind of wax do you use? The type of wax used is very important; especially in body waxing. I absolutely love the wax I use, and so do my clients! I use Se-Brazil waxes by Stephanie Laynes. I have two types of soft waxes, Latte- a cream and Seven- a gel. I also use the CoCo/ Diva Hard Wax. These waxes are low temp and natural; there are no chemicals, parabens, polymers, artificial fragrances or colorants that could potentially irritate the skin in the waxes, same is true for the pre and post care products. I typically use a soft wax in the bikini area and only use hard wax on the labia
and around back. I also offer sugaring as an alternative to waxing, it is very similar, yet different and is an organic sugar paste called SugarLove by Jessaskincare. (I will explain the difference a little further down, and you can refer to my website for more details). How long is my appointment? Your first appointment will take longer than maintenance appointments. I book out 45 minutes for first-time Brazilian waxing service and 30 minutes for your first bikini wax service. This is a total time to allow for undressing, the service itself, getting redressed, checking out and rebooking. Many times the wax itself is only 10-20 minutes long. (when clients add on brow, lip, underarms, legs; this time will obviously be a little longer). Besides bikini/Brazilian, what other areas should I get waxed? Many of my regular clients, especially brides get multiple areas waxed. Brows are great to get shaped and sculpted prior to your wedding, and it is very nice for the wedding week and honeymoon to toss that razor aside and not worry about hair, that is when I recommend: Brow, Upper Lip, Underarms, Bikini/ Brazilian, full or half legs. What is the difference between a bikini and a Brazilian? Every Esthetician defines this differently, so wherever you choose to go you’ll want to get clarification prior to booking your appointment. I define as; Bikini Wax includes the upper thigh, a hands width from the bikini/underwear line, as well as anything above the “mound” is fair game. You can leave a large or small triangle, a strip, or remove it all. Brazilian is all hair removed front to back; however, if you wish to leave a triangle/ strip you may do so. Some do not like to take all in the bikini area.
if requested at time of booking appointment, or as an alternative if I see best fit. It is a bit slower of a service, as I hold the sugar paste in the hand and mold it to your skin 2-3 times and remove it with a flick of the wrist. Do I need to do anything at home after my wax? For 24-48 hours after your wax you will want to avoid the 4 S’s: Soaking, Sweating, Sun and Sex. After waxing it takes a while for your skin to return to normal, you want to protect your open follicles from any bacteria entering in. Soaking includes swimming pool, hot tub, or bath tub. You will also want to ensure you keep your skin hydrated daily, the best way to ensure this is to drink enough water as well as apply a moisturizer (ideally without fragrances/colorants), as well as exfoliate two-three times a week. This can include using a product with a grit such as a scrub, an exfoliation mitt, or a retail product that I sell. Please avoid laying out or tanning beds for 24-48 hours post wax, apply sun protection if you cannot avoid being outside, as your skin is much more sensitive. You will leave your service with an appropriate post-wax product on. I hope this Q&A helped answer a lot of your waxing questions, and got you excited to add hair removal to your bridal check list! Don’t forget to schedule your appointments ahead of time! Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions about waxing or sugaring! Let’s Wax!!! Donna has been a Licensed Esthetician for 10 years and is the owner of Donna Curry Esthetics located on the Northside of Evansville. She provides Skincare, full body Waxing and Sugaring, custom Airbrush Spray Tans, & more!
I am prone to ingrowns with shaving, will I get them with waxing? It is very likely that your ingrown situation will improve with waxing! However, there is some homecare that you will need to do post wax to ensure this! You will want to be consistent with exfoliating two-three times a week, and keeping your skin hydrated daily. I also have several great home care products from Se-Brazil and Jessskincare that can help you maintain smooth skin at home. It is typically unlikely that ingrowns are a result from your esthetician, unless they are unexperienced with techniques of body waxing; as technicians we cannot “give you ingrown.” I have retail products that can help prevent and/or treat ingrowns, and we don’t have to start you on the most abrasive exfoliation method first, I like to start small and work our way up. As hair is regrowing, will it be itchy and stubbly? When your hair is growing in the new hair will have a fine tapered tip, this makes regrowth finer, thinner and less dense. You should not experience any stubble, and little to no itchiness. What is sugaring? Sugaring in an alternative to wax, and it typically is a better option for those with sensitive skin. I became certified in Sugaring two year ago. (I do prefer to still use hard wax on the labia and around back; however, I can sugar the bikini area). I only sugar

DESSERT BARS HOLLYWOOD
IN the late 1800's, the last queen of France, Marie Antoinette is infamously quoted as saying when she was told her subjects had no bread to eat "Let them eat cake!" Of course, you know how that ended for her... she lost her head.
dessert bar. Strawberries can be dipped in white chocolate, milk or dark chocolate. The can even have toppings, such as mini chocolate chips, toasted coconut, nuts or glitter. If you decide on strawberries, summertime will produce the sweetest berries.
When you are planning your reception, don't lose YOUR head. Most brides want their subjects, I mean guests, to have cake, and a dessert bar is an excellent way to compliment your beautiful wedding cake. A dessert bar you say, what is that? A dessert bar can give your guests fun and delicious options and help make your reception a delightful, memorable experience.
Cookies are a great item on your dessert bar. Cookies can be a cost effective way to add desserts to your table. They can be paired with milk in champagne glasses for a milk and cookie bar. You might have a favorite cookie that you want to incorporate in your cookie selection. You can put the cookies on trays or in baskets. You can purchase pretty little bags for your guests to take cookies home with them. Piece of Cake can take a picture of the couple and put it on a hand decorated butter cookie for a beautiful and unique wedding favor. These delicious cookies come individually wrapped, for a beautiful presentation, to keep them fresh and make it easy for your guest to take them home.
Pies are a great option for fall weddings. Mini pies or slices of pie can be a great addition to your dessert bar. Offer a few varieties, one fruit, one cream and maybe a pecan or a pumpkin pie, which are synonymous with fall. Make sure to have plenty of whipped cream to serve with the pies, too. An ice cream bar can be super fun if you are having a summer wedding. Pick your favorite ice cream flavor, or pair flavors that will compliment your wedding cake. You could have sundae toppings, whipped cream, cookie and candy pieces, nuts and maraschino cherries for an over the top ice cream bar. Don't forget to get cute ice cream dishes and colorful spoons to bring the whole concept together. You can check your local party or craft store or look online for exactly what you are wanting. There are other delicious options as well, cheesecake or cheesecake bites can be a decadent option for your dessert bar. Cheesecake can be served with wonderful toppings, like fresh sliced strawberries, sweet cherries, blueberries, warm caramel or chocolate sauce. If you opt for the cheesecake bites, they could be topped with chocolate ganache and a fruit garnishment such as a raspberry or half of a petite strawberry. Cake pops are great for kids, but adults love them too! Cake pops are baked cake and frosting mixed together and rolled into a ball and dipped in white or milk chocolate. Cake pops come in a variety of fun flavors including cookies and cream, chocolate, wedding cake, strawberry, funfetti and red velvet. The cake pops can be adorned with sprinkles or glitter and make a wonderful addition to any desert table. Chocolate dipped strawberries are the ultimate indulgent item on a
30
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
Let’s not forget cupcakes. Cupcakes are a popular item any dessert table. The great thing about cupcakes is that they are mini self-serve cakes! No cutting required. Cupcakes can come in a variety of fun flavors. Unlike a traditional wedding cake they can have frostings that complement the cake flavor. Red velvet and cream cheese frosting, cappuccino with mocha, double chocolate with chocolate frosting. The combinations are only limited to your imagination and palate. Some of these options can stand alone such as the ice cream or pie. All of these options can be paired together to give your guests a variety to choose from. Remember what Marie Antoinette said, "Let them eat cake, and ice cream and pie and cheesecake‌" I may have made that last part up, but it's good advice! Cate Sisco is co-owner of Evansville's premier bakery Piece of Cake in downtown Evansville, IN. Cate and her sisters recently celebrated the award winning bakery's 18th year in business. Her passion for baking was passed down from her parents and grandparents. Many recipes used at the bakery are family recipes, though Cate enjoys making up new recipes for cookies, cakes and breakfast items. Her goal for the bakery is to continue making the highest quality products, while keeping up with current baking trends.
FINANCE
MARRIAGE & MONEY
the Other Big Questions to Pop
WHEN getting married, the cost of throwing the wedding isn't the only money discussion you and your significant other should initiate before walking down the aisle.
It's important to have frank discussions about finances and your views on handling money. These conversations may be uncomfortable at first, but avoiding them could prove much more costly down the road: Money problems are one of the leading causes of divorce. "If you can lay it all out and meet halfway, you can set yourself up for a successful financial relationship, as well as a stable emotional relationship," says Joshua Mungavin, CFP, a financial planning analyst for Evensky & Katz Wealth Management in Coral Gables, Florida.
More questions While you're chatting, Mungavin recommends you to ask each other the following:
•
Do you want and are you comfortable with a prenuptial agreement? If so, consult a qualified professional.
•
What happens with any assets held that were the result of an inheritance?
•
Who pays the bills, in what proportion are they paid and how?
•
When do you want to retire and what does retirement mean to you?
And it doesn't have to be stressful experience. Establish an open dialogue by "discussing goals and aspirations, and what it will take financially to get there," says Mungavin. "It's a good way to ease into the overall conversation that doesn't require a direct confrontation."
•
What will your estate plan look like?
•
What is your risk tolerance and how will that affect
Mungavin recommends including these topics in your conversation:
Will you merge all your accounts, keep individual accounts, or create a mix? How will you title the accounts?
Use a budgeting calculator to help get a handle on where your money goes. And be sure to consider how you'll protect your income and property in your discussions. Your State Farm™ agent can answer your questions about life insurance, disability income insurance, and homeowners insurance.
Spending and saving habits
- Bob Davis, State Farm
Account structure
Spenders and savers can peacefully coexist if you keep the lines of communication open. Ask each other:
•
Does the higher earner get to spend more?
•
Do you spend out of the joint account as long as there are sufficient funds?
•
Do you have to answer to each other for expenses?
•
Do personal expenses come out of a monthly allotment
•
each one gets for these types of expenses? Is there a specific dollar amount that requires a discussion with your significant other prior to a large purchase?
Credit histories "Ultimately, newlyweds' credit scores will affect each other and can impact your ability to get a mortgage and buy cars," Mungavin says. "If one partner has credit problems, it's important to discuss why these issues exist and what has changed to make sure they don't happen in the future." Learn more about the factors that can affect your credit score.

WEDDING DAY
Skin Prep
BEAUTIFUL
bridal makeup starts with great skin, and your makeup is only going to look as good as your skin does underneath. So these are five of my favorite tips to help you achieve a healthy, bridal glow for your big day. 1. Start early! The earlier you can get on a good skincare regime, the better! I recommend to my bridal clients that they need to be on a skincare system six months to a year before their wedding date. This gives me time to work with them to help clear up any skin issues they may have. For example, acne scarring is a common issue for women, and a great product will help diminish the scarring. Correcting skin imperfections takes time, and starting early is essential. 2. Use a skin specific moisturizer. Moisturizer is one of the most important things you can do for your skin. Women with dry skin need a moisturizer formulated for their skin type to add moisture and prevent dry patches. Women with oily skin need moisturizer to prevent their skin from creating excess oil and stay balanced. Our skin does not know the difference between oil and moisture, and if oily skin is not properly moisturized, it will create more oil to compensate. 3. Use sunscreen daily! Not only does sunscreen help to prevent against skin cancer, it also can create sunspots and other skin imperfections. Sunscreen not only helps those of us that are fair complected from burning right before the wedding, but it also helps those that tan from getting too dark and making it difficult to match foundation. Also, don't forget sunscreen on your lips! This helps prevent them from getting chapped and dehydrated. 4. Do not try any new skincare products or makeup right before your wedding! Not only do you not want to put anything on your skin that you may react to, but your skin and makeup are some of the small details that is so nice to have already taken care of months before the wedding. Have fun, play with different colors and looks, but do it well in advance! 5. Do a deep exfoliation of your skin several days to a week before your wedding. At home masks and facial peels are great to help deep cleanse your pores. This ensures that you have healthy, clean skin before applying makeup on your wedding day.

STYLING YOUR Bridal Party
STYLING your bridal party can be a daunting task. Here are a few commonly asked questions I'm always happy to answer! Is it still ok if my bridesmaids' dresses don't match?
It's safe to say that the mismatched bridesmaid trend is here to stay. It appears we've evolved past strict rules for bridesmaid fashion. Anything goes! You can do subtle mismatching by dressing your maids in dresses by the same designer in the same fabric/color, but with different necklines. Or you can go completely mismatched by letting your maids pick their own unique styles in a coordinated color palette. How can I pick a dress my bridesmaids won't hate?
Real talk: how much would you enjoy wearing a dress someone else picked out for you? Exactly. If your vision for your bridal party includes all your maids in a uniform look, then do that! Pick a simple style that will flatter most body types and a pretty color, and notify your maids of your decision. It’s as simple as that. If you really want them to love the dress, then you'll have to relinquish some control and let them pick their own unique styles that suit their personal taste. Either way, your maids love you and are there to support you. They're not just in it for the dress. How much should I ask my bridesmaid to spend?
This is always a delicate topic, and it's better to address it directly rather than make assumptions. Ask each of your maids privately how much they are comfortable spending on
a bridesmaid dress before you begin shopping. If you fall in love with dresses that are over someone's budget, offer to make up the difference. It’s a great bridesmaid gift to pay a portion of the cost of their dresses. I don't want my bridesmaid dresses to look ba sic...how can we spice them up?
There are SO many ways to shake up the standard bridesmaid look. Sparkles and sequins are still going strong, but are styled in a more laid-back way rather than having a formal feel. Soft prints and florals are another strong trend that will give your maids some pizzazz without going over the top. Think of it this way: imagine if you saw one of your bridesmaids wearing her dress out in the real world...an event, gala, etc. Would you look at her and think she looks like a bridesmaid? Or would simply look like a chicly dressed woman? Aim for the latter. If you’re looking for a unique look for your bridesmaids, or just don’t know where to start when it comes to styling your wedding, please contact one of our stylists at House of White. We offer one-on-one styling consultations to help brides pull their vision together and create a gorgeous bridal party. Happy Shopping! Andrea Whitehead is the owner of House of White Bridal Boutique. PLANNING
HIRING an Event Manager
YOU said “yes,” set a date, and now the clock is ticking. Chances are, you’ve been thinking about your wedding day for years, but now it’s time to bring your vision to life. Imagine the moment you've dreamed about forever: walking down the aisle to the person you love. Now, imagine walking down the aisle again and freaking out mid-stride because you aren't sure if your cake is going to be at your reception when you get there! A knowledgeable, experienced event manager can alleviate those freak-out moments. I get wanting to plan your own wedding, especially if you have family and friends dying to help. You might be the most organized of your friends. You might color code your sock drawer and make Martha Stewart look like an amateur. But I'll bet you Martha Stewart would still tell you to get a wedding coordinator. You can cross all your Ts and dot your Is, but at the end of the day, you have to let go and walk down the aisle (and dance your tail off at your reception) and begin to enjoy all your hard work and money spent and time dedicated. However, you can't do that while looking over your shoulder all night and worrying about every little detail. A typical Event Management Service will begin 8-12 weeks out from your wedding date. Your coordinator should request all your contracts (yes, you
44
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
should have contracts for every vendor, even if Aunt Sue is doing the cake), do a venue walkthrough with you, and manage your wedding rehearsal, ceremony, and reception. She’ll also create a detailed wedding day timeline to keep you and your vendors on schedule. Additional services may or may not include actually decorating the ceremony and/or reception spaces. Consider hiring an event manager as a gift --an investment-- to yourself, your significant other, and your family and friends. I promise, you won't regret it! Wild at Heart
Laura & Jonathan FOR Laura and Jonathan, their wedding was a day of celebration but most especially a day of joining their families. It was important for them to involve their children and loved ones throughout every aspect of their beautiful day. One of their priorities was creating a wedding that did not get hung up on traditions they felt were unnecessary and instead embrace an atmosphere of love and natural details that mean something personal to both of them. Married on their rural property with natural accents of simple greenery, raw wood and heirlooms from family, they had an intimate ceremony and reception afterwards in their barn strung with lanterns and lights. As they were serenaded by their favorite band, they ended their family oriented day under the stars. ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

FLOWER CROWN Fashion
A FLOWER crown can be the prettiest and most beautiful
option for a woodland wedding, a garden party or any romantic theme you can dream up. Flower crowns add an ethereal touch to a bride's big-day look. Adding touches of pearls or crystals combined with soft greenery can make a stunning piece. Whether it be a full flower crown or small touches of blossoms or baby’s breath, the options are endless. And as an important reminder, unfortunately, not all fresh flowers can stand the test of time. Some blooms that have a super short lifespan are poppies, sweet peas and the lily of the valley, all of which you'll want to avoid. Smaller flowers, like daisies and ranunculus can stay out of water for a long time. Spray roses and things that are hardy, such as wax flowers, jasmine and spirea, are great choices too. Greenery crowns can definitely go the distance, and berries last and look pretty as an accent. When thinking of your bridal party, of course the sweet

little flower girls come to mind for flower crowns. But also think of what they carry! Instead of them dropping petals, which most venues frown upon these days, have them carry floral swags. A very durable swag can be made of something more unique like Nigella and Andromeda. Even greens of seeded eucalyptus and Italian ruscus, can be lush and lovely. It’s also a good way to not play favorites, if you have two flower girls, this way they can walk side by side! Starting on Forever
Brooklyn & David BROOKLYN and David met shortly after graduating high school on the 4th of July and fell into a whirlwind summer relationship straight out of a Nicholas Sparks novel. Knowing they were bound for different universities, they decided to end the relationship and spent several years apart until on a whim, Brooklyn decided to visit David up at IU. Instantly, the two knew that their brief romance was not over and soon proclaimed to each other that they had loved each other since that life-changing summer so many years before. When it came time to plan their wedding day, Brooklyn and David decided it was only fitting to be married on 4th of July weekend. With the backdrop of 20 West in Newburgh, Indiana, they danced under the summer night sky as all their dreams of forever finally came true. ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

Souls on Fire
Parker & Taylor PARKER and Taylor met several years ago at the very venue where they held their wedding and reception, Burdoc Farms. An evening spent joking and singing together turned quickly in to more when they discovered their shared interests in music and family. Soon it became apparent that their bond was something they wanted to last forever, and Taylor popped the question in a gorgeous private picnic he set up to surprise Parker on a rural back road at sunset. No place was more fitting for them than to be married than at the very place that brought them together. Using natural dĂŠcor elements such as branches, wood and greenery, Taylor and Parker, along with their families, created all of the dĂŠcor themselves. Simplicity and personal details are all they wanted, and they made sure their wedding reflected that. Prior to their ceremony, the couple made time to meet one another back to back while Taylor sang to Parker. The night ended in a burst of fireworks and sparklers as the families and guests sent off the happy newlyweds. ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

HELP! I Feel So Stressed As your big day approaches, you start to feel panicked. You still have so many things to do. You have to get last minute decorations, make sure the caterer has the correct menu, and proof read the place settings one more time. Things that you haven't thought about suddenly need to be done. You find your stress rising as you consider everything that needs your attention. How do you handle this stress without losing your cool? First of all, remember that you can only do one thing at a time. Prioritize the tasks before you. Then focus on the one that is most important. The caterer needs his answers tomorrow but the florist can wait for a couple of days. So take care of the caterer first. Once that is finished, go on to the next task. Trying to do everything at once will only increase your stress and make you feel overwhelmed. If you need to, write your task down so you have a visual reminder of what needs to be done next. Secondly, ask for help if you need it. You have bridesmaids and a maid of honor who want to help you. Your mother or future mother-in-law would also like to help make your day special. If you are having difficulty getting everything done, identify areas they may help you. Let the maid of honor pick up the place cards and bring them to you. Let your mother help put the wedding announcements in the envelopes. You do not have to be superman or woman and do everything yourself. Your family and friends will consider it an honor that you have asked for their help. Thirdly, take time for yourself. Enjoy a sunset, take a walk, or read a book that has nothing to do with your wedding. You need time to relax and enjoy being yourself. All the planning and preparation will go much better if you are relaxed both physically and mentally. It is so easy to only think about the wedding the closer it gets. You will lose a part of yourself, however, if you forget to enjoy life during the chaos. Everyone needs time to play and recharge in order to live life to the fullest.

Love & Passion
Anna & Ethan IT DIDNT take long for Anna & Ethan to know they wanted a life together after a first date at Cavanaugh’s. Both loved the outdoors, animals and Disney. A year later while on vacation at Disney World, they dined at Cinderella's Castle. Ethan got up to get his picture made, then dropped to one knee and popped that exciting question in the most magical place on earth. The guests and staff broke out in smiles, tears and congratulations! They said their vows on a rainy day, but the showers didn’t dampen the celebration a bit. Anna knew that her love of horses had to somehow be included in the décor, as she’s been riding since before she could talk. Lucy Grisham at AlphaGraphics designed a logo for the couple that was incorporated into multiple print pieces and even the cake. Combining horseshoes and other equine details with antique silver and beautiful floral displays created and elegant and truly personalized décor for Anna and Ethan. The bride’s bouquet started with brooches that had belonged to her great grandmothers, then contributions from family and friends were added along with finds from area antique stores. Photos of the bride’s parents and grandparents completed the bouquet.

Beth Carter Exquisite Bridal
BETH CARTER of Beth Carter Exquisite Bridal & Formal Wear in historic downtown Huntingburg, Indiana, took over the building in 2013 and began renovations over that summer. Their grand opening officially took place in September of that year. When asked what inspired their family to start the business, Beth’s answer was, “Having two sons, shopping with my two daughters-in-law was a real eye-opening experience. As we went from place to place looking for the perfect gowns, I realized the need in our area for a place where customers could be treated like they deserve to be treated: With respect and the individual attention every bride craves. It was our intention to create a bridal store where the customers feel welcome and comfortable during every visit.” Beth goes on to share, “We had a strong history with the Holland Dairy, and I worked for years in sales there. It was a helpful stepping stone for our business
76
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
because I not only had the sales experience, but we also met so many local people through the dairy who have come to be loyal customers.” She goes on to add, “We are going into our fourth year of business, and we have been growing! For our first year of business, we were able to keep all our bridal, bridesmaid, and prom gowns all in the same area. The need for more styles and more options continued to grow as our customer base grew, and soon we had to renovate even more of the building to make room for all the merchandise we are able to offer.” Beth also adds, “We also had the opportunity to dress brides from out of the country! Imagine our surprise when we got a call from Australia! After multiple Skype sessions and phone conversations, we were able to get the perfect dress sent halfway around the world. Just the fact that we have spread our name to California, Texas, Australia, and Haiti is definitely a milestone in itself….
We are [also] blessed to live in a small town where people show such loyalty to retailers they like. We’ve had the chance to see girls go from being a bridesmaid to being the bride, and even having babies! We are also a part of the Huntingburg Chamber of Commerce, which keeps us active in the events that go on all year long, such as the Christmas Stroll, the Wine & Jazz Fest, and the Daffodil Stroll. You get a real sense of community and togetherness when you work on Fourth Street.” When asked what her favorite part about working with brides is, Beth’s answer is “We get to be part of a moment of true happiness when a bride puts that dress on. We share their tears and walk them through the entire process, so to be able to give them that peace of mind and gain their trust is definitely our favorite part.” She goes on to share, “We do our very best to give each customer personal attention. Our brides and their families enjoy a toast after finding the perfect dress, while our men get to enjoy a beverage of their choice while going through the tux measuring process. We have separate areas for bridesmaids, brides, mothers, and even a mancave with a flatscreen T.V. to make the experience as painless as possible!” For more information on Beth Carter Exquisite Bridal & Formal Wear, visit: www.bethcarter.us or find them on social media at: www.facebook.com/BCBridal and www.instagram.com/bethcarterinc

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT
YOUR DJ
More than just Music
LONG gone are the days of having a DJ for your wedding reception and just expecting music. In the modern wedding industry, when booking a DJ, you are actually hiring an entertainment/production company that will act as your musical entertainment, Lighting Designer, MC, Reception Coordinator, and even provide a photobooth, video screens and music for your ceremony. When choosing entertainment for their big day, many brides and grooms may not consider lighting. However, this the perfect way to transform your wedding venue into a space full of warmth and elegance to enhance your wedding experience. Being creative to accent your space with lighting will make a huge impact and could be all the decorations you may need. While your ‘entertainment budget’ may not allow for the extra cost, consider lighting to be part of your decoration budget. It will be the most impactful investment you will make for your wedding. A photobooth is another exciting option to keep your guests entertained at your reception. This allows everyone to throw on some hats, sunglasses and act crazy

for the camera. The pictures also provide fun memories for years to come. Finding a DJ who fits your personality and can create your vision of the perfect day is extremely important when choosing your entertainment. Starting with the initial meeting, and ending with the last song, your DJ should provide entertainment for you and your guests, create an amazing atmosphere and coordinate with the other wedding professionals to create a flawless reception. Sure, professional entertainment companies can provide only a DJ, but you deserve a full experience at your reception. So, when searching for a DJ, be sure to ask if they can accommodate all of the services that ensure that your wedding will be fun, emotional, exciting and memorable. This project was designed to bring about the piece's third life, and we were thrilled with the final results. In order to prep the piece for spray paint, painter's tape and kraft paper were used along the edges to trim it out just like any other painting project. Extreme care was used, though, due to the curved edges of the interior of the surface. Of note also, because a glossy spray paint was used, no scuffing up of the surface was necessary. Once the piece was taken outside, the spray paint was applied directly to the surface with no further preparation. For those who are a little messier, a drop cloth is recommended, but what little overspray happened with this project did not cause the Sisco family enough concern to warrant a drop cloth in this situation. The backside of the piece was tackled first, and then the nooks and crannies of the detail work. The frame was then flipped over, and the front was then painted. The piece was then allowed to dry overnight, and then chalk writing was applied to finish the look. Spray paint can be a very versatile look in your wedding DIY arsenal, and we highly encourage its use in projects. We just remind you to use caution, though, to not allow food to touch surfaces that you have spray painted designs on. Instead put a layer between that and the food. These can include cake cardboard layers (sold at most major craft stores) or some sort of foil or other baking surface.
