LETTER FROM THE EDITORS
Risking Frostbite TO BRING YOU High Style . . . As we try to stay warm this winter season, wedding planning continues on year round for our 2017 and 2018 engaged couples. While most brides choose dates in the summer or even fall months, there is something to be said about the beauty of a winter wedding. From faux furs to hardy greenery, the details are different, but the elegant outcome is the same. In this issue, to show off winter weddings with style, we tackled freezing temps not once, but twice for outdoor photoshoots. We show off new and second hand items, and we are thrilled to bring you vendors in this issue who discuss subjects like where you can find locally sourced flowers as well as find bison meat in this area! Highlights from this issue include our first local celebrity wedding ‘featuring MLB baseball pitcher Jerad Eickhoff,’ a traditional Hindu wedding, amazing winter-styled inspiration shoots and great advice from local pros about everything from beauty to a Bridal Week runway report. For this second edition, we went big with our debut at Super Bride Sunday. We hope you made it there and to all the other amazing wedding shows in the region. Now cozy up and soak in all the eye-candy. May you find inspiration and information to help you plan your perfect day!

Kids in Weddings
EXPECTATIONS & PREPARATION Photo by Esther Bloom Photography
INCLUDING kids in your wedding should be a weighted decision. They definitely add a certain level of fun to the big day, but out of all the elements of your wedding, they can and should be considered your biggest wild card risk in terms of your planning. Here are a few factors and tips when considering including children in your event:
1
The Correlation Between Age and Ability
The age of the child or children that you select will make a tremendous difference as to their capabilities. Is the child old enough to walk on his or her own? If too young to walk by his or herself, then who will carry the child? If the child is old enough to walk, will the child be confident enough to walk down the aisle unassisted? If the child is old enough to walk, but doesn't take direction well, you'll need to make sure that you have enough family member "wranglers" in place at both ends of the aisle, and possibly strategically positioned throughout the length of the aisle, to coax your flower girl or ring bearer to the finish line. Even older attendants can get stage fright, too, so be sure that his or her parents practice the plan well in advance to ensure a seamless procession.

Rest is Key
Nothing can complicate a wedding worse than a poorly planned nap. Kiddos who have been kept as close to their normal routine and who are not overly tired will be more inclined to behave better for photos and less likely to melt down at key moments. With that being said, kids are kids, and they possess neither the same reasoning skills as adults nor the same graces as their larger counterparts. So if the waterworks begin, don't stress out about it. Let that child's parents or grandparents deal with it. You keep on with the rest of your fabulous day! You have no control over the timing or the improvement of that situation, so move on! When the tantrum is over, all will be well with the world, and while you may not have had the little one in your formal group photos as planned, worst case scenario, you can always grab your photographer for lots of candid (and absolutely precious) snapshots later.

Prepare for the Unexpected
4
Keep Them Occupied
Let's face it, kids aren't perfect, and that's why we love them. So don't be surprised if there are spills, tears, spit up, falls, lost items, and/or any other number of gross or stressful things that come along with their participation. It's how you prepare for the inevitable that will make all the difference in how smoothly your day will go. So either coordinate with that child's parents and/or take it upon yourself to take emergency precautions for a few worst case scenarios. Think wet wipes, bandages, thread and needles, gummy bears, gold fish crackers, coloring books, tissues, etc.
Just because you will be busy the entire day of your wedding, doesn't mean the little ones are. They generally only play a small supporting roll. So think about how to keep the children occupied during the downtime. Consider making their bridal party gifts something that can be played during slow moments, or you can provide inexpensive, non-messy distraction techniques like coloring books and colored pencils. You might even consider special seating for the kids at your reception that includes kid-friendly treats, games, and more. See Pinterest for inspiration. Look up "kids wedding reception table" for ideas. Ultimately his or her parents are responsible for the child's entertainment, but anything you can do will help in the collective effort of better behavior and overall enjoyment of the day... for everyone. Having kids in your wedding is a wonderful way to maximize including loved ones and makes the day exciting. You just need to be ahead of the curve when it comes to expectations and execution of the game plan of the day. While there will most certainly be a little bit of drama and excitement any time kids are involved, if you include little ones in the big day, generally, the reward is always worth the risk.

CAKES & CONFECTIONS FINDING YOUR
Signature
CAKE
Your wedding day will have your signature all over it, and the centerpiece of your reception will be your wedding cake. Today there are so many options for wedding cakes, it's easier than ever to find one that reflects your style. Are you going for the sleek and elegant look? This can be achieved by having the tiers of your wedding cake just two inches apart in size. With the cakes being so close in size, this will give you the look of a tall narrow cake. It lends height, presence and a more modern look to your cake. Adding some shimmer to a tier of your cake is a great way to add style and sophistication. This can be achieved by painting on edible gold or encrusting your cake with gold sugar or placing edible pearls. A sparkling ribbon with rhinestones is also a great way to elevate your wedding cake design. When you picture your perfect day, are you thinking of a vintage look? You might not necessarily want to replicate your mother or grandmother's cake, though. Instead, consider using a family heirloom, such as a cake plate to hold a small tier cake or a layer cake. Consider using several cake plates to hold individual cakes or cupcakes on silver trays. The cake could be embellished with a pretty jeweled brooch, which could be a family heirloom or simply one you purchased at a second hand shop, craft store or from Etsy. Maybe you're a little bit country, and a rustic look is more your style. Placing a simply decorated cake with fresh flowers and some burlap ribbon on a wooden slab might be just what you are envisioning. What if... gasp!... You don't like frosting? A naked cake might be the cake for you. No, a naked cake is not for the bachelorette party. It's a cake that is not frosted. Usually, the cake is torted and has a buttercream or jam filling between the layers. These cakes are simple and elegant and look lovely adorned with fresh fruit or flowers. Today there are so many resources, it's a piece of cake to find the perfect cake that reflects your style on your wedding day. Cate Sisco is co-owner of Evansville's premier bakery Piece of Cake in downtown Evansville, IN. Cate and her sisters recently celebrated the award winning bakery's 18th year in business. Her passion for baking was passed down from her parents and grandparents. Many recipes used at the bakery are family recipes, though Cate enjoys making up new recipes for cookies, cakes and breakfast items. Her goals for the bakery are to continue making the highest quality products, while keeping up with current baking trends.

ENGAGEMENT
Ring Trends
TODAY there are unlimited settings, gemstones and precious metals to choose from when buying an engagement ring. Whether your future bride has more traditional taste or she is one that lives for a unique design, the following trends and styles are the most popular we have seen this past year. HALO Of all the engagement ring designs, the classic halo style beats them all when it comes to popularity. This design has been around for years, but has recently been trending well with today's brides to be. A ring, or halo, of smaller diamonds surrounds the center stone making it appear larger than its true size, adding even more sparkle.
ROSE GOLD Softer and more complimentary than its counterparts, rose gold has become a popular choice among engagement ring shoppers. Rose gold also lends itself well to mixing with different colored precious metals when creating your own unique engagement ring. According to Dirk Brinker, Vice President of Brinker's Jewelers, “Rose gold is fashionable and it adds a uniqueness to the most common white gold.”
MIXING METALS Now, more than ever the use of multiple metals on one engagement ring is highly desired. Can’t decide on just one type of metal? Mix and match the ones you love. Yellow and white gold can be combined not only to create a beautiful piece, but to also make a ring uniquely distinct from all others.
VINTAGE DESIGN Every bride wants a ring that fits her personality. Vintage designed rings offer the chance for couples to create fine details in their rings. Our master jewelers describe vintage rings as having filigree elements to them. Many of the vintage inspired rings created at Brinker’s Jewelers display intricate hand engraved designs to match the characteristics of its wearer.
COLORED GEMSTONES Traditionally, engagement rings are adorned with the classic gemstone of choice, the diamond. However, in the past year, more brides are choosing a more colorful gemstone as their feature stone. At our store the most popular of colored gemstones selected to be set in engagements rings are rubies, sapphires, and the occasional emerald. At Brinker’s Jewelers, their life’s work is making sure you find the perfect engagement ring for your bride-to-be. They are there to guide you through your selection process and inform you of the top styles and trends they see every day when helping couples select or design their perfect ring. Stop by their store to see the selection of beautiful engagement rings, contact them by phone 812-476-0651 or email with any jewelry questions you may have.

Glamorous IN GOLD Photography by Walker Studio
Is there anything more dramatic than a gilded theatre of old? For this Glamorous in Gold feature, we were inspired by the baroque details of Evansville’s very own Victory Theatre. With the stage as our inspiration, we knew there was only one dress to fit the bill. This jewel-encrusted, gold dress exudes drama, confidence and star-power. Not to be upstaged, the table was set with glitter to spare. The chef of Victory Theatre then outdid himself with entrÊes and a dessert so pretty you could hardly bring yourself to eat them. The custom DIY cake is made from stacks and stacks of Oreos. Who knew a common cookie could transform into something so regal? Styled with gold, sparkle and a whole lot of glamour, this over-the-top look is everything a star of the stage could dream of.

Owned by Amber and Derek Ungethiem, Hornet’s Nest Steakhouse and Catering has been a Northside gathering place for both locals and travelers alike since the mid 1800’s. With an eclectic crowd of regulars, passersby, traveling foodies and families, as well as a booming nightlife, the Hornet’s Nest still has something for everyone. The menu ranges from tavern fare to carefully-crafted, chef-inspired specials, but there is nothing regular about any item that leaves their kitchen. For weddings and events, you can choose from their formal fine dining service, their full bar service, and/or their drop -and-go service. They are located just minutes from the airport and have a long tradition as one the Tri-State's favorite restaurants. They operate under the philosophy, "if you can dream it, we can do it." Specialty items include Filet Mignon, Pecan Bourbon Chicken, a boneless breast of chicken rolled in Georgia Pecan pieces and sautéed in a bourbon butter sauce, and the Cajun Chicken Tortellini, a colorful Cajun spiced pasta tossed with chicken, bell peppers, and red onions in a creamy light sauce.

CANDID PHOTOGRAPHER
Advice
We asked some of our favorite photographers what is the best advice they have for the big day. Here were their responses... "Always book more time with the photographer than you think you need. The small investment in an extra hour or two will not only ward against inevitable wedding day mishaps, it will ensure the bride is stress free and able to enjoy every moment of the day. A happy bride is a beautiful bride." Shillawna Ruffner

"Don't follow traditions just because... make the day special and unique that's meaningful to you. Don't worry about what people think you SHOULD do." Laura Rush
Esther Bloom Photography
"While Pinterest is an invaluable tool for planning weddings, if you're hiring a professional photographer, Pinterest is not as helpful. The reason for this is: if you are hoping to capture all of those precious memories on your special day, but your photographer is busy re-creating someone else's memories, you will definitely miss out. Trust your photographer! They will probably see you in beautiful light and end up making an inspirational pin from YOUR wedding!" Joleigh Van Hoy
Joma Studios
"RELAX! When your stressed or worried about things, it will show in your photos." Matt Vickers
"If you decide to have a spray tan for your wedding and/or engagement session, try not to go too many shades darker than your natural skin tone. Having your skin looking so much darker than usual may look unnatural. Also, be sure you choose the most natural shade and avoid anything that looks too orangey or red. Over the years I've seen a few brides and bridesmaids that have gone a bit too far with the tanners, and it can't really be fixed in the photos. Another thing to consider is not tanning and show off your own lovely natural skin tone."
"NO MORE AISLE RUNNERS PLEASE!!!! They look like toilet paper." Jesse and Gena Daniels
Jesse & Gena Photography
"If you can’t make up your mind about having a First Look, I always recommend it! It eases tension before the ceremony and gives more time for portraits of the wedding party. Plus it’s less time your guests have to wait on you at the reception."
"UNPLUGGED WEDDING. One of the purposes of an unplugged wedding is to allow the hired photographer to capture the ceremony without the distraction of guests’ cameras, cell phones, iPads, etc. by politely requesting no photos being taken. As witnessed on several occasions, guests with a digital device can easily ruin the shots your experienced wedding photographer was hired to capture. To see the groom’s view of his bride walking down the aisle blocked by cell phones, cameras and iPads is very sad, but even more frustrating."

BEAUTY
Q & A WITH
DaKyissa
When a bride is preparing for her big day, how should she prepare her skin?
Tell us your philosophy of using makeup to bring out a person's inner beauty.
You will want to follow these steps:
Three: Create and/or adjust your daily skin care routine.
I don’t believe makeup can bring out a person’s inner beauty, however, I do think that many of us are visual learners. We may need to see ourselves enhanced in order to get inspired about the process of inner healing. As women, we take on so much responsibility in the lives of others. We have to make sure we are working harder to feel and live beautifully! Once we are comfortable in our skin, makeup (and fashion) can help to boost confidence, self-esteem, and individuality.
Do you recommend any particular regimen?
What other advice can you give brides?
Overall, your regimen should include products that Cleanse, Balance, Restore, Quench, and Glow the skin. I like to use products from LimeLight By Alcone.
Make sure you have a trial session for both your hair and makeup. Also, your bridal party sacrifices a lot for you. Make sure you do something special for them! Maybe get them a gift or have a special girls' night event for them.
One: Take a look at your current skin care routine. Determine what you currently use and why. If you don’t know much about skin care, begin working with someone who does. If you don’t know anyone, I would love to work with you! Two: Discover your skin type (normal, oily, dry, combination).
What should she look for in a makeup artist? Here are four things I look for in a makeup artist: One: What services does he or she specialize in? If you’re looking for a bridal makeup artist, you’ll want someone experienced in that area. Weddings require more attention than any other special occasion. The last thing you want causing stress is your makeup. Two: What is his or her background? This will tell you if makeup artistry is a hobby or a part of his or her career. Generally, you can tell by his or her pricing. Hire someone based on level of experience instead of price. Three: What kind of products does he or she use? You want to make sure his or her products won’t conflict with your skin. Also, you will want to know if he or she uses professional grade makeup. Four: Does he or she provide a service or an experience? When it comes to bridal makeup, it’s more meaningful to work with someone who will provide an experience. This is one of the most special moments in your life. So allow yourself the opportunity to make the experience something you’ll remember forever!
Why is using a makeup artist so important? I’ve never been opposed to women doing their own wedding makeup until I got married. I decided to do my own makeup, and I wish I had hired someone. I had so many things running through my mind that day and being pampered would have really helped ease my mind. Planning a wedding is a lot of work and can easily be stressful. Your wedding day is not the time to work hard(er), it’s the time to relax and enjoy all the hard work you put in. For one day in your life, let someone else handle everything!

PLANNING a 2017 wedding? Here’s a peek at what wedding stationery trends are on the rise in the coming year! Simple Greenery Florals have dominated the scene on invitations for the past few years, and you won’t see those going anywhere. However, in 2017 simple greenery such as eucalyptus, ferns and other leafy botanicals will share the spotlight on invitations. Brides love that this style suggests simplicity and an environmentally conscious affair. Hand Lettered Fonts Calligraphy and hand lettered fonts will continue to be hot on invitations. Go lightly on these elements though, as they can sometimes be difficult for guests to read. I recommend using hand lettering on major items, such as the couple’s names or card headers. Monograms Gone are the days of the simple overlapping initials. Today’s monograms are playful and personal, featuring elements that relate to the couple. A monogram design is also multi-functional, as it can be used on everything from cocktail napkins to printed materials such as menus or programs.

Illustrated Maps Customized maps orient your guests and highlight area attractions near your wedding venue. Adding personal details to the design, like an illustration of the couple or the spot where they met, add an unexpected, memorable touch to this piece. Envelope Liners Envelope liners are a great way to incorporate pattern and color into an otherwise simple design. Liners for a euro flap envelope will need to be specially cut and might cost you more. Opt for a square flap envelope and your liner costs will be significantly cheaper with most printers. These are just a few of the trends that have been popular for clients planning 2017 weddings, but don’t box yourself in based on these ideas alone. Your wedding should reflect your personal style, and the same goes for your paper goods! DESIGN With You in Mind
TELLING your story is a big part of creating a wedding that shows off your unique style and who you are as a couple. Gone are the days where everything needed to be white, formal and floral. While we still love a classic wedding look, these days, it is all about showing off your individual personality. Love Star Wars? Go with a galaxy theme similar to the one shown in our Written in the Stars inspiration shoot. Just add in quotes and details that reflect your love for the Jedi, and you have an elegant, if offbeat, wedding that will leave no doubt in your guests’ mind that the day is about celebrating you and your new spouse. Always dreamed of an elegant look but your fiancé wants to incorporate hunting? Hold the camouflage! Instead think past the obvious and find ways to bring in some wildlife details. For example, the Boho trend is great for using antlers, feathers and even animal skulls. The trick is finding that spark of creativeness that takes those long-held Pinterest ideas and making them right for you and your partner.

Don’t know how to pull it all together? Hiring a Design and Décor specialist can make all the difference. Be sure the person you hire is open to your ideas, no matter how off the wall they might seem. A good designer will take all the disparate ideas that you have and find a way to weave them together while still executing a beautiful vision for your day. Just keep in mind that a Designer/Decorator is there to bring the wow-factor to your wedding. Give them your ideas, then let them loose. A true Designer will execute your vision but at a level you would not have been able to dream of doing yourself. JoElle Knight is the Editor-in-Chief of ENGAGED! Photography by Shillawna Ruffner Photography FORMAL is back. While we love the hipster-casual styles seen in the past few years, there is nothing more classic and attractive as a man in a tux. To illustrate this look, our friends at Ella Park Bridal put together these sleek menswear combinations to show you just how good a man dressed to the nines can look. Featuring brands from their Jim’s Formal Wear division, our models are suited up in assorted styles from their Michael Kors line. Jackie Daniel, the coordinator behind these fashion selections, gives us a glimpse into 2017’s hottest menswear trends. SLIMFIT Showing off a trim physique is possible with the ultra slim fit styles seen on the runway. Fitted closely to the frame, slim-fit tuxes convey cool confidence in a sleek look. INDIVIDUAL STYLE One of the biggest wedding trends is having the groom be attired in a different style than his groomsmen. Whether he wears a different color suit, opts for a coat or selects a different color tux than his friends, standing out is a must this year.

BRIDAL FASHION
RUNWAY Report THIS past October, the top bridal retailers from around the globe gathered in midtown Manhattan to once again take a ride on the carousel of fabrics and ruffles that is Bridal Fashion Week. We were there, snapping pics, taking notes, and excitedly placing orders for our favorite gowns, all the while noting major trends in the bridal fashion universe. Every season prominent trends emerge as we bounce from show to show. Some trends were more subtle, others more obvious, but all were clear indicators of what's to come in the world of weddings for 2017. Here are a few of our favorite trends from the week: 3ÂD FLORALS Texture has been playing a major role in bridal fashion for a few seasons. This year, texture specifically took the form of delicate florals. Gowns appeared to be dusted in flower petals for a light, whimsical look that would be suited to both a garden or a cathedral. BALLGOWN SILHOUETTES After years of seeing slim gowns as the preferred silhouette for brides, luscious ballgowns seem to be reclaiming their place in the limelight. Designers presented an overwhelming number of full skirts on their runways; some bejeweled and elaborate, others sleek and simple. And since a ballgown shape is flattering on nearly all figures, we're likely to be seeing this look in many wedding photos in the near future. PLUNGING NECKLINES Brides are embracing the opportunity to show their sexy side on their wedding day. And with the vast number of plunging necklines on the runway, it's clear designers were ready and willing to offer gorgeous options to make a sexy statement. Plunging necklines were incorporated into styles of all shapes and fabrics, whether it be vintage-inspired lace or modern silk and sparkle.

SHIMMER AND SHINE A little bit of shimmer never hurt anyone, am I right? Designers seem to agree. Many styles had sparkle of all kinds: large encrusted stones or delicate sequins. 2017 brides are bound to shine. STATEMENT ACCESSORIES Many gown designers shared the spotlight with elaborate statement accessories that gave their gowns a haute couture finish. Large scale chokers and necklaces were especially prominent, as well as eyecatching headpieces in place of traditional veils. And remember: trends come and go, so aim to be timeless. Select a trend that's true to your personal style, and you'll be sure to look back on your wedding photos with no regrets. Andrea Whitehead is the owner of House of White Bridal Boutique. Located in the quaint historic district of Newburgh, House of White provides area brides with designer and couture dresses in an intimate atmosphere that promotes relaxation as they choose their dream wedding attire.

Phillies pitcher and Evansville native, Jerad Eickhoff marries his college sweetheart in a family filled local wedding
Jerad & Morgan Evansville native, and Phillies starting pitcher, Jerad Eickhoff married Morgan Lane at a family filled wedding in his hometown this past December. Morgan and Jerad first met in 2010 attending Olney Central College in Illinois. Bonding over their success in Biology class, they struck up a friendship and soon a relationship that would carry them through many changes, moves and the uncertainty of carving a path to reach the ranks of Major League Baseball. Training and playing in leagues in Arizona, Washington, North Carolina and Texas made it tough, but they dug in and made the long distance work. As Morgan says, “We really learned a lot about love and trust and how to be strong.” In July 2015, Jerad was traded to the Phillies where he has now completed his first year pitching in the Big Leagues. He proposed in November 2015. Finally achieving his dream of becoming a MLB player, he wanted to make his life complete. In front of hundreds of loved ones, Jerad and Morgan were able to say “I do.” ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

FLORAL
THE LUXURY OF Local Flowers
Imports are often equated with luxury, but when it comes to wedding flowers, just because it crossed an ocean doesn't make it inherently better. In fact, in the world of cut flowers, the most fabulous, lush, rare, interesting, fragrant and fresh blooms are the local ones. The truth is that flowers are fleeting, and a lot of what makes them so beautiful, also makes them perishable. Weeks of travel across the country and across continents is tough on delicate fragrant blooms. That’s why flowers that might have once been lovingly grown in your grandma’s garden aren't typically at your neighborhood Walmart. It’s crazy and counter-intuitive that a rose flown all the way from South America is much more common now than a fluffy pink peony or a delicate dahlia that might be grown a few miles up the road. Complicated economic factors have driven this shift away from domestic and locally grown floral products, but what it comes down to these days is accessibility. It’s easy to order 500 of those South American roses for your wedding from a professional importer. It’s tough to track down a half dozen local growers that combined might have that many delicate garden varieties in a particular color palette all blooming in

the same time span. But I’m here to tell you that getting those gorgeous, specialty, fresh, local flowers is still possible, and it’s so worth it! For a typical Petal and Pine wedding, I source products from six farms in Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee. These local flowers are often custom grown specifically for our clients and freshly cut days (not weeks) before their event. It takes more effort, more time and more money to incorporate local seasonal flowers into my wedding work. However, the magic of mother nature is definitely what makes my designs special. I am so proud of all the beautiful product we have growing right here in the Tri-State and really encourage anyone investing in wedding flowers to splurge and support local flowers. Lindsey Fares owns Petal & Pine, a boutique floral and event design studio based in western Kentucky. A master of floral art, she specializes in sourcing locally grown flowers to create bouquets and arrangements that are in her words, “a little wild, a little loose and as fresh picked as possible.” For more info visit: www.petalandpinedesign.com

Tejal & Nick Little did Tejal know that a broken computer screen would be a blessing in disguise. While having it repaired, she was forced to use the computers available in her apartment building to finish her schoolwork while attending IUPUI. It was in that very computer room that she was introduced to the man she would marry. Nick and Tejal quickly became best friends and over the years fell in love. To this day, she knows that it was destiny that brought her and Nick together. Their wedding this past fall was a joyous affair with three days of festivities involving their families and dear friends. With the ceremony and reception decorated in traditional Hindu wedding dĂŠcor, the atmosphere was set for a dance-filled day as their loved ones celebrated the marriage of the beautiful couple. Hindu WEDDING CUSTOMS LOVE the flair, fun and atmosphere of Tejal and Nick’s wedding? So do we! Tejal shared with us the many customs of traditional Hindu weddings, all of which aim to ready the couple for taking their sacred vows and shower them with love and gifts from their family. PREWEDDING CUSTOMS MEHNDI This is an occasion where the bride’s hands and feet are decorated with mehndi (Henna). The bride’s close family and friends are also invited to have their hands decorated for the wedding. PITHI This ceremony is where both the bride and groom are covered in yellow powder that is made into paste (Turmeric). This ceremony the bride and the groom have on their own and usually invite their close family and friends. The reason behind the pithi is to cleanse the bride and groom before the wedding day. The paste is used to help brighten and soften the skin. MOSAALU (SATAK) The bride receives gifts from her maternal uncle, which consists of clothes, jewelry and other gift items including the traditional choodo (ivory bangles). The Mosaalu takes place one day before the wedding. WEDDING DAY CUSTOMS BARAAT: The groom arrives to the wedding ceremony venue with his Baraat of friends and family. The groom arrives riding a horse. The baraat gathers together, and everyone dances in celebration. PONKVU (Arrival of the groom) The official start of the wedding begins with the groom welcomed by his mother-in-law at the entrance. JAIMALA The bride is brought outside, and the bride and groom exchange garlands. This is called the Jaimala ceremony. Their friends lift the bride and groom and family, and they exchange garlands. KANYA AGAMANA The maternal uncles lead the bride to the mandap. When she reaches the mandap (stage), there is a piece of cloth that separates the bride and groom from seeing one another. The wedding ceremony takes place in front of a sacred fire and is conducted by a pundit (priest). MANGAL PHERAS The bride and groom take four rounds around the holy fire to solemnize the marriage.

SAUCED The Ballroom at Sauced is located at 1119 Parrett St. in the historic Haynie's Corner Arts District in Evansville IN. Faith in Forever
Anna & Mitch Anna and Mitch grew up only 5 miles apart in the small town of Xenia, Illinois. Brought up on their family farms, they both were involved with 4-H, but an attraction was to come later as their lives wove tighter and tighter together. Through high school and college, they remained ever closer friends until Mitch’s mother finally wore him down enough to ask the sister of his good friend out. By that time, during Spring planting, they knew they could not deny the strong attraction and began a relationship that would lead them to Forever. For their ceremony, Anna wore the dress her mother and grandmother wore on their wedding day. She wore a second dress at their reception. Anna says that their story is that of a cheesy country love song— two kids growing up in a small farm town who were always meant to be together.

HOW TO HAVE
Tough Talks
HOW DO I BRING THIS UP?!?! You might have asked yourself this question before, “How do I bring up__?” Starting a conversation about something important can be overwhelming. Each time you try, it can turn into a fight. Being engaged is a happy time, however, it’s also a time of transition in life, with many questions that pop up along the way. Wedding plans, kids, in-laws, holidays, finances. The list of issues can seem endless. For some, it may seem easier to not bring things up to avoid a fight, however, that leads to bottled emotions and resentments. Feeling confident expressing your wants and needs calmly is called being assertive and is something you can learn. Try these easy steps to have a productive conversation instead of an argument. SAY SOMETHING POSITIVE First, say something positive. It’s tempting to start a conversation by jumping into the problem, however, no one likes to feel attacked with negative statements. That will leave your partner with an opening to be defensive. Let’s say you want to discuss the finances of your upcoming wedding. Instead of the defensive, “You spend all the money you make,” you might start with “I know you work really hard, and I appreciate that.” TALK ABOUT THE FACTS Next, talk about the facts of the situation that you want to bring up. Remember, we don’t want our partner to get defensive so we can’t tell them how or what they feel, or what their intent was. Therefore, we can’t say something like “You spent all that money because you don’t care about our future.” Try sticking to the facts. For instance, “We haven’t talked about budgeting for our wedding, and I’ve been looking at how much things cost.” SAY HOW YOU FEEL Then, bring up how you feel. Again, we can’t tell other people how they feel, so make sure you are using “I feel” statements instead of “you” in this part. For example, instead of “You make me so worr
68
ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY
-ied,” try “I feel worried because I don’t have a good handle on how much we can spend on this.” SAY WHAT YOU WANT Next, the crux of it all- what you want. This can be the hardest part because it asks that you bring a solution to the table. Even if you’re not sure if it will work, your partner will appreciate the effort. A solution can be simple, too. For instance, “I was thinking we could find a time to sit down together and budget out what it would cost to have the wedding we want, and then we could take the next step to see if it matches with what we have. When’s a good time for you?” EXPLAIN Lastly, you want to explain to your partner why this solution will help you both. Here’s where you can back up your solution with how much it will resolve any negative feelings. “If we did this, we would know how much we can spend and what we need to save. I would feel so much calmer and be able to get excited about planning for the wedding.”
Remember these easy steps:
Positive, Facts, I feel, I want, and Why? Happy talking!

Vintage Romance
Ashley & Grant Ashley and Grant met while she was attending nursing school. He was the guy who needed some help, and Ashley was the girl that helped tutor him. Later she realized that he already knew all the answers but just wanted a reason to keep her close. Soon those study sessions turned into long walks and those longs walks turned into love. \
Ashley, a fan of all things vintage and romantic, knew she wanted a wedding to reflect the blush pinks, golds and sparkle of her signature style. Vintage lace, iced branches, crystal and gold were used throughout the dÊcor. As a nod to Grant’s New Orleans heritage, several Fleur-de-lis items were placed throughout the reception. Now settled in his hometown, Ashley and Grant continue to enjoy long walks as they explore the Big Easy. ENGAGED! RIVER VALLEY

VENDOR SPOTLIGHT The Bauerhaus
Bauer’s Grove has been a landmark of the Evansville area for over 130 years. Located on the Northside of Evansville in Darmstadt, Bauer’s Grove and Bauerhaus has been run by five generations of the Bauer family. Situated on over 70 acres of meadows and forest, The Bauerhaus is steeped in traditions of hospitality and event planning. In the mid 1800’s, Michael Bauer came to Indiana from Darmstadt, Germany to become one of the founding settlers of the town of Darmstadt, Indiana. Its German roots are still apparent with the construction in the 1980’s of the Bavarian styled Bauerhaus as we know it today. Michael and his wife Barbara loved the people of their little town so much, they decided to create a 10 acre picnic park. On Sundays, townspeople would travel in their buggies and wagons to enjoy a day at Bauer’s Grove.

By the 2nd generation, Michael Bauer Jr. began hosting square dancing, eventually enclosing an open-air platform to create the first building on the grounds. The 3rd generation, Raymond and Genevieve Bauer expanded the property to 32 acres and put in the hard rock maple dance floor that is still the centerpiece of Bauerhaus today. In 1970, the 4th generation of the Bauer family, Jim and Peggy Bauer took over operation. After a trip to Europe, the couple came back with dreams of honoring their family and town’s German heritage and drew up plans for a building with unique Bavarian architecture and themes. During the drought of 1983, nearly a hundred 50 year old trees died on the property. This tragic occurrence proved to be a blessing and gave the Bauers the raw material they needed to start building. Construction began on the Bauerhaus in 1985. It was
also at this time that the family expanded the property to a total of 70 acres. Since opening, the Bauerhaus has been a local favorite for weddings and events. The interior of the building is perfect for hosting large gatherings that still maintain an intimate atmosphere due to the 2nd floor balcony seating. The beautiful meadows and woods provide a lovely backdrop to the many outdoor weddings held on the property. As one of the most popular event venues around, the Bauer family continues its legacy of providing clients exemplary services to celebrate milestones and create memories. Today, Jim Bauer, Jr. and his wife Christy, 5th generation, have broadened the scope of services to include mobile catering and pastry. In 2015, exterior and interior renovations were also completed to accommodate ever changing bridal trends. Now you can get the Bauerhaus’ amazing chefcreated food at any venue. Whether it is delicious entrees or decadent desserts, the culinary teams of Bauerhaus Catering and Bauerhaus Pastry provide delectable food for any event. In addition to the array of food choices, their team of professionals are some of the best in the region. You do not need to worry about anything with their event coordinators working with you to plan your perfect event. The next generation of Bauers, Hadley and Addison are poised to take on the family tradition with hopes that they will take the business into the future. As a true American family, the Bauers created a thriving business that has sustained their loved ones for generations. As they often state, “You are welcomed to Bauerhaus with the deepest of care and family traditions.”

DIY
DIY Lush Greenery Table Runner Ever drooled over the greenery and floral runners all over wedding sites and Pinterest these days? Well we are here to show you how to create one for yourself. This lush greenery runner is perfect for a head table or other special place at your wedding. Follow along with our easy DIY tutorial and send us pics of your finished project at engagedrivervalley@gmail.com.
1
We can’t wait to see how you make it your own!
1
Purchase 5 bunches of Plumosus Fern and 1 bunch of Italian Ruscus. Just call or stop in the closest Zeidlers to place your order.
2
Set the table with linens. We put together two 8 foot tables and placed a silk runner down the middle. Feel free to opt out of the fabric runner if would rather just have the greenery.
3 .
Start placing the Plumosus Fern along the center of the table. Don’t skimp! Lay it on thick. This is your greenery base and gives it the lush look. Next, start adding in the Italian Ruscus. You will want to snip the long stems down to half their size and start sticking them in the Plumosus.
4 .
Add in the final touches. We put wire fairy lights and wood candle pillars with geo-glass candle shades. The crowning piece is the woodland cake by Piece of Cake Bakery. Tuck in flowers, ribbon or whatever else you desire to create your own unique look.

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT
DO YOUR
Homework
THE best advice I can give to any bride is the same that I give to my high school freshman…do your homework! All wedding DJs SHOULD be experienced in weddings, make all of the announcements, dress up, have backup equipment, and take requests, but unfortunately this is not always the case. Wedding DJs in the Tri-State vary from company to company in the services they offer – receptions, ceremonies, karaoke, and photobooths. A few offer uplighting, but not all uplighting is the same. Different styles of lights are needed for different venues, and not all uplights create the same effect or colors that you see on their website or in their pictures. Pricing?! Sometimes it sounds like you are being sold a used car. Every company will give you a different sales pitch, so figure at least seven hours total, and be aware of any hidden charges or unwanted “upgrades” that should already be included. An iPod can play music, but it’s everything else that separates the really good wedding DJs from the rest of the pack. Experience, professionalism, reputation, and quality should always be your first priorities when selecting a wedding DJ.
DJs provide a service that really can’t be showcased properly on a website or an edited video of their best work. You checked out your dress and photographer in person, so why not your DJ? I know this isn’t the norm, but we invite you be our special guest if constraints allow it. The best vote of confidence can also come from your photographer, so ask! Our philosophy is simple – listen to the lady in the white dress. I know this sounds cliché, and every bride is different, but it’s about making YOUR dreams come true. We specialize in ceremonies/receptions and uplighting. Our main focus is to give you peace of mind so you can relax and enjoy your reception. Every step of the night will be coordinated with your photographer and caterer to ensure all of your details go as planned. Matt owns Matt Kelly & Associates Mobile DJ Service and is an area high school teacher/coach. He is former onair talent for 106.5 WRTB for 6 years and is participating in his 19 consecutive Super Bride Sunday. th

BEAUTY AND WELLNESS
WHAT IS
Nerium?
SMOOTH skin is what most women dream about, and that is a factor of many things… youth, good genes, hydration, avoiding too much sun exposure, and plenty of rest. However, for most of us, we don’t live in a bubble, and we can’t control everything that can age us prematurely. Now when it comes to weddings, some people could argue that filters and Photoshop could solve the issue of fine lines and wrinkles for you as the bride, the mom, a bridesmaid, or even a guest in photos, but why should that be the answer? Photo editing won’t fix what people see in the everyday or at the event, so why not put your best you forward for the big day? Products to care for your skin like Nerium can help.

BEFORE
AFTER
Nerium is described as providing the “best-in-class age-defying products tailor made to deliver results while also fitting your busy lifestyle.” They “employ an innovative 360-degree approach to anti-aging with comprehensive age-fighting solutions for the face, body, and mind and a holistic approach that addresses aging from the inside out.” There are three active ingredients found only in Nerium products that I’d like to share with you: NAE-8ΤΜ – a patented extract derived from the nerium oleander and aloe vera plants that acts as a powerful antioxidant and boosts the cell renewal process to reveal younger-looking skin. SIG-1191TM- a patent-pending, exclusive ingredient that works as a super antioxidant and skin hydrator specifically developed to target aging around the eyes EHTTM- a patented mixture of bioactive molecules isolated from coffee that helps protect against common, age-related mental decline Nerium’s products are designed to address the signs of aging, as well as the underlying causes. They act as a powerful antioxidant that works to target free radical damage. They also boost the cell renewal process to reveal younger-looking skin. Products like their AgeDefying Night Cream target fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, and enlarged pores. It also works to increase firmness and provide a more even-toned com-

plexion. Their day cream guards the skin from oxidative stress caused by exposure to everyday environmental factors. It also binds moisture to the skin for longer lasting hydration as well as helps smooth the look of existing wrinkles and supports natural collagen production. With that all being said, smooth skin won’t happen overnight. Taking care of your health, your overall well-being, and your skincare is a process that you should plan just like you are planning the big day. So consider what steps you want to take for radiant skin by the time of the wedding. Robin Spear is a Nerium International Independent Brand Partner from Haubstadt, IN. Like most women, she started noticing those fine lines that age us all. After searching high and low for a product that would help her turn back the hands of time she took the advice of a friend and tried Nerium. After a few days of use, she realized her search was over. She liked it so much she wanted to share it with all her friends. She has been a Nerium Partner since December 2014. To learn more about Nerium, visit www.nerium.com/rspear

TIGHTEN & Nourish Whether you are the bride, the mother of the bride or groom, a bridesmaid or a guest, as you gear up for a wedding, you might be looking to improve a trouble area before the big day. That's where the It Works! Ultimate Body Applicator can help. The Ultimate Body Applicator is a non-woven cloth wrap that is infused with a powerful, botanicallybased formula to deliver tightening, toning, and firming results in as little as 45 minutes. The botanical ingredients help to deeply hydrate and nourish the skin while redefining the appearance of your body's contours. The Ultimate Body Applicator comes in a versatile shape that can be applied wherever you choose to see results, such as the stomach, sides, back, upper arms, thighs, or lower legs. To use the Ultimate Body Applicator, simply open an individual Ultimate Body Applicator pouch (four included in each box of Ultimate Body Applicator), remove the Ultimate Body Applicator cream-infused cloth wrap, and unfold it. Place the cream-infused side of the wrap against your skin on the area of your body where you wish to see results. While many body wraps simply cause water loss, the Ultimate Body Applicator uses a botanically based cream formula that, when applied to the skin, gives you tightening, toning, and firming results that last with continued use. The botanical ingredients help to hydrate and nourish the skin while redefining the appearance of your body’s contours. You may use the Ultimate Body Applicator on your arms or legs by cutting one wrap in half in order to promote symmetrical results. The Ultimate Body Applicator is intended to be used on one area of the body at a time. We also recommend that you drink at least half of your body weight (in pounds) in fluid ounces in water daily. Staying hydrated is key to helping you see results with the Ultimate Body Applicator.
