Need to know Riding for charity Earlier in the year the Sydney to Surfers Charity Bike Ride—sponsored by Macsim Fasteners—raised just over $243,000 for Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets. The ride is run by the Rotary Club of Engadine, with Ken Robinson the chief and Kevin Stuart the Ride Secretary. Youth Off The Streets is a non-denominational community organisation working for young people aged 12-21 who are facing challenges of homelessness, drug and alcohol dependency, exclusion from school, neglect and abuse. Since opening in 1991, has grown from a single food van delivering meals to young homeless people on the streets of Kings Cross to a major youth specific agency offering a full continuum of care through delivery of a wide range of services. The ride is a fully supported 7-day long ride that starts at Hornsby in Sydney’s north and ends in Southport. Over the last 15 years of doing the rides, the club has earned over $2.2 million. Struggle street The June quarter 2013 Construction Work ABS data “shows the Australian building industry continues to struggle,” Master Builders Chief Economist Peter Jones said. “What’s at risk is jobs growth, particularly the ability to retain and employ apprentices,” he said. The overall value of construction work done fell by 0.3 per cent in the June quarter due to a fall in building work done of 0.6 per cent and a fall in engineering construction of 0.2 per cent seasonally adjusted. The value of work done in the residential building sector fell by 0.1 per cent and the non-residential building sector declined by 1.3 per cent. “The latest figures confirm anecdotal evidence from Master Builder Association members that poor conditions across the building industry continue,” Mr Jones said. “The dip in engineering construction reinforces concern about an earlier than expected peak in mining activity while the building sectors continue to struggle despite lower interest rates,” Peter Jones said. “Both building sectors declined in the June 2013 quarter, confirming a disappointing rate of recovery from distressed levels.” “The June quarter figures will put further pressure on the Reserve Bank to consider further easing to stimulate the non-mining sectors of the economy to avoid the economy stalling as growth in resources and engineering construction begins to fade,” Peter Jones said. “But this cannot compensate for a return to sound economic management by the next Australian Government,” Peter Jones said. 

Need to know Industrial sector holding strong Demand for scarce industrial space in the western suburbs of Melbourne and Sydney has sparked interest among speculative builders and developers taking advantage of lower rents, supporting infrastructure and availability of land. Melbourne’s western suburbs have seen rents for warehouse space rise by as much as 10 per cent, providing new spark to the speculative building market with a conservative 30,000 sqm in various stages of construction, according to Savills Australia. While the rental spike has not yet been significant enough to impact the investment market, Savills says that if the latest activity is sustained across

the board, some increase in investment market activity should be expected towards the end of the quarter. Sydney’s outer-west also continues to drive growth in the industrial sector, with developers taking advantage of low rents, supporting infrastructure and availability of land. CBRE’s Q2 2013 Australia Industrial MarketView report found that while hesitation in the marketplace and lending mandates have restricted development projects in recent years, positive activity within the transport and logistics sector would underpin strong supply levels of prime distribution and warehouse assets. Over the course of 2013, 541,428

sqm of industrial space is expected to be completed in Sydney, with 634,365 sqm due in 2014. The report shows that Sydney’s industrial market remained balanced for the first half of 2013, with growth in the transport and logistics sector offsetting the decline in manufacturing. With transport and logistics sentiment and economic drivers set to strengthen, prime rents are expected to see continued—albeit slower— growth in the short to medium term. The outer central-west enjoyed the highest rental growth over the year to June 2013, with an 8 per cent jump, followed by the central-west and north-west with 2 per cent. 

Demand for office space is on the rise, according to Colliers International.

Colliers International found that professional services were responsible for a large proportion of the activity, with a marked rise in the number of information technology and communication companies looking to relocate (making

up 20 per cent of enquiries). The report concludes that the office market is set to enter recovery mode by H2 2014 and, with the lack of supply on the market over the short term, it’s unlikely that there will be any more major growth in vacancy rates. Colliers also predicts the second half of this year will be active, encouraged by an upturn in the United States. 

According to Property Week, tenants’ appetite for office space around the country is on the rise, with enquiries up 33 per cent on the same time last year. The data comes from Colliers International’s latest report. The figures, revealed in Negotiating the Swell: What’s in the Pipeline for CBD Office Tenant Demand, support Colliers’ predictions of a market recovery by 2014, and show that activity in Australia’s office market is strong despite industry concerns about sentiment. In the year to June 2013, Colliers International recorded 1351 enquiries, compared to 1041 for the same period in 2012—an additional 273,989 sqm of office space. Deal volumes remained relatively consistent, with 263 in the year to June 2013, compared to 272 for the same period last year. Despite a fall in the total size of office space leased, the number of lease transactions in the first half of 2013 was 4.4 per cent higher than in H1 2012. Colliers International says that while there has been a lot of “doom and gloom” about the office leasing market, there is still activity and levels of enquiry are positive. Need to know In a spin A solar-powered rotating house, which can complete a 360-degree rotation in ten minutes, has created a stir in Canberra, selling a couple of months ago for $1.2 million. The house, which rotates on castors supplied by CSS supplier Richmond Castors, has generated a lot of press for its eco-credentials, and the fact that it spins around in a circle on twenty-eight wheels. The home, named Girasole (which means ‘follow the sun’) was built by John Andriolo of MAG Constructions, following what he described in some papers as a “lifelong dream”. The four bedroom home is powered by solar panels on the roof, and is spun (gently) by the use of a touch-screen panel inside. John Andriolo told a newspaper, “Girasole will encourage a change in thinking away from needing to find perfectly oriented blocks and will demonstrate that even the most ambitious undertakings can be seen as a prototype for future environmentally friendly homes.” The designer, Peter McCabe, told the same paper the rotation mechanism uses minimal energy, due to the lack of lifting involved in the process. ‘’We think it’s about 100 watts, which is about the same as a bright light bulb.’’ Rotating homes were likely to remain a niche market, however the eco-friendly design could inspire other projects. ‘’It’s never going to be the main type of houses people design, but it has its benefits.’’ The home is on a 704-metre block in the Canberra suburb of Crace. 

Need to know The pay problem Master Builders Australia says the hopes of thousands of young people seeking jobs in the building and construction industry were dashed by the Fair Work Commission’s decision to effectively raise the pay of first and second year trade apprentices by 20 per cent. “The Fair Work Commission’s decision will lock thousands of young Australians out of rewarding careers in an industry crying out for more skilled workers over the next decade,” Master Builders Chief Executive Officer Wilhelm Harnisch said. “It must be remembered that apprentices are being paid to attain a qualification,” he said. “The Commission’s decision will simply price many apprentices out of what is already a tight job market and at a time when the building and construction is struggling and less able to afford to take them on.” “Unions such as the CFMEU have lost touch with reality when they denigrate 457 visa workers because they want more employment for Australian workers but pursue a wage claim that will lock thousands of young Australians out of vocational training and a rewarding career,” Mr Harnisch said. 

business in any industry that attempts to compete on price alone is doomed,” says Steve Sammartino, Marketing lecturer at Melbourne University. “Now that we’re no longer geographically isolated in a business sense and potential customers in any field can shop internationally, we can’t possibly take on the world’s biggest organisations on price alone. But if you’re able to differentiate your product or your service and build it with the needs of specific markets in mind, if you can customise it for the people in your region or for individual client organisations, then you’re able to offer something the big producers cannot.” Sammartino is on the Advisory Board of a new manufacturing company in Australia which, believe it or not, makes cars. But Tomcar Australia does not mass produce lines of automobiles in competition with other major automotive brands. Instead it builds an entirely new category of off-road vehicle that is specifically designed for the military, mining, rural and tourism

industries. “It is made right here in Melbourne and will very soon be an exemplar of manufacturing 2.0 in this country,” Sammartino, also the author of popular business blog startupblog.wordpress.com, says. “It’s differentiated, built for specific needs, unique, not price oriented. Even the way the car is being retailed is non traditional.” Along those same lines, Dr Swee Mak, Director of the Future Manufacturing Flagship at the CSIRO, wrote in Business Spectator that over the next ten years, “success factors that will influence the competitiveness of Australian manufacturing firms will include the need for faster discovery and development to respond more quickly to dynamic markets, advanced design to create much more competitive and sustainable products, improved collaboration across our innovation system to maximise the exchange and transfer of knowledge, an increase in our ability to leverage our national broadband infrastructure, and encouraging a better understanding of supply chains. Another key success factor will be our ability to develop, adapt, adopt and integrate the right enabling technologies that provide a competitive advantage for Australian manufacturing firms.”

BOSTIK XTREME FIX USED IN THE LEGACY WAY TUNNEL

Bostik has provided a superior bonding solution to the complex and demanding needs of the Legacy Way Tunnel Project in Queensland. The Legacy Way Tunnel Project required a reliable, high-quality, economical product that cured under reasonable time frames. Bostik Xtreme Fix was selected due it’s high performance qualities in combination with factors such as economy and Bostik’s local presence. The Legacy Way Tunnel stretches around 4.6km connecting the Western Freeway at Toowong with the Inner City Bypass at Kelvin Grove. The project consisted of an intergrated team of three principals including, BMD Constructions, Ghella and Acciona. The tunnel was fabricated using two tunnel boring machines (TBM’s) that were 12.4m in diameter and 110m in length - the tunnel ring was placed as the TBM’s progressed. Each ring consisted of nine precasted elements. The perimeter of each had an EPDM gasket bonded with sealant. More than 4,300 rings and a total of 120,000m³ of concrete were used.

After trialing a range of products, the client saw Bostik Xtreme Fix as best suited to the project. “We trialled two adhesives prior to receiving Bostik Xtreme Fix,” stated lead engineer Ignacio Sanz, “Bostik Xtreme Fix was by far the best. There is no special respiratory equipment required during use, it does not attack the EPDM and cures dry. It’s the best adhesive for this job”. In total the EPDM gasket was bonded using 16,000 Bostik Xtreme Fix cartridges. Due to it’s continued investment in research and Development, local R&D teams are constantly working to ensure products are world class and still relevant to the Australian context. They do this by continually testing new technologies to develop new ranges of products. Damian Callinan, Operations Manager of Tridon Australia, says this knowledge can help a business to both manage a project and to save money along the way. “When customers see it happen and speak with the people who manage the process they definitely develop a better understanding of the manufacturing process,” Callinan says. “That can be very valuable for them. It helps customers to better understand how products can be customised and what is possible. And should there ever be a particular requirement, it helps both of us work out a solution.”

Tested For Australian Conditions Local manufacture can mean a great deal for products used in an environment as unforgiving as Australia’s. Peter Smith, Marketing Manager of

Dodgy danger While tradies and site managers are both responsible for making a building site safe, a jerry-built solution is dangerous because it offers a false sense of security. Danielle Gusmaroli investigates

young workman is toiling in the searing Australian heat on the rooftop of a two-storey house. Behind him, a makeshift net covers the void where the stairwell will eventually be built. The radio is playing in the background. He is installing roof trusses wet from earlier rain but lifts two that are laminated together and suddenly loses his grip, collapsing backwards into the stairwell void. The terrified 26-year-old crashes four metres from the rafters to the landing below, breaking three vertebrae. He also suffered a punctured lung, broken ribs, a fractured wrist and head wound. This harrowing scene in Keysborough, Victoria, is every construction worker’s nightmare. It left the young man so horribly injured he is now a paraplegic and relies on a wheelchair for mobility. Contractor Mayneline Pty Ltd was dragged into court by the government heath and safety regulator WorkSafe and fined $60,000 in 2010. Fall protection had not been erected, and the workman had tumbled straight through the makeshift net above the stairwell. Johns Lyng Insurance Building Solutions Pty Ltd, the main contractor on the site, pleaded guilty in Dandenong Magistrates’ Court to one charge under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004. At the time of the incident WorkSafe expressed frustration that its calls for the elimination of temporary safety measures and for improved practices within construction had largely fallen on deaf ears. WorkSafe’s general manager for health and safety, Lisa Sturzenegger, said: “It is enormously frustrating that

this essential part of construction work must still be a focus of WorkSafe’s compliance and enforcement activity.” The young victim is one of around 40 workmen who die on construction sites across Australia annually, among an estimated one million workers employed. Over the last seven years, the death rate has fallen, albeit gradually, from around 50 to 40, according to the national policy-making body Safe Work Australia’ s latest Comparative Performance Monitoring Report (October 2012). Yet construction site deaths, recorded from 2003-2010, represent roughly dou-

ble those of all other recorded work-related fatalities across all industries, including the blue collar sector. Last March a 54-year-old worker was killed in a fall from scaffold at a site on the corner of Pitt and Campbell Street in Sydney’s CBD. Days later, a 17-year-old suffered severe head injuries and died after he was struck by a falling excavator bucket in Sydney’s south-west. The construction union CFMEU NSW Secretary Brian Parker sent its members’ sincere condolences to the family and friends of the workers saying: “No one should ever have to die as a result

The major Australian building and construction industry association Master Builders (MBA)—which represents 31,000 building firms and contractors—

says the fall in workplace accidents is due to increased literature and government regulations aimed at clamping down on unsafe or do-it-yourself work practices, and on firms which do not enforce statutory health and safety regulations. In 2010–11 more than 140, 000 workplace interventions were undertaken by work health and safety authorities around Australia. Authorities issued 57,600 notices made up of 970 infringe-

ment notices, 5,292 prohibition notices and 51,349 improvement notices. The MBA views controlling the hazard of makeshift safety measures, such as in the case of the worker who fell down the stairwell, or as a result of erecting a temporary fence at the edge of a top slab, as integral to the construction task itself. Its national director Richard Calver said: “Any death within any industry is bad news. Falls from height is a serious hazard in the construction industry equating to 25 per cent of all construction fatalities and 26 per cent of serious workers compensation claims—where the injured worker was required to take one or more weeks off work. “A person conducting a business or undertaking has a duty of care to provide, so far as is reasonably practicable, a work environment without risks to health and safety as well as safe systems of work. Temporary safety measures have been practised for years and will continue to be.” The construction union, CFMEU,

inspectors come out to investigate it, they’ll find massive systematic problems in the workplace. “It’s actually a plague in the construction industry at the moment and we’re going to target it,” he said. Contrary to the belief that it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure safe work practices, the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 states the charge also falls on the shoulders of the employee. Safe Work established two codes of practice approved by the Government in 2011 to guide companies to meet work health and safety duties of care by identifying fall hazards, assessing risk and implementing controls. These two codes of practice are: managing the risk of falls at workplaces and preventing falls in housing construction. The code states erecting a temporary bracing system as guard railing around an unprotected edge may be used to provide effective fall protection at the perimeters of buildings or other struc-

Building success For the Canzoneri brothers, success in business is as much about partnerships as experience

t says something about the values that drive a business like the C3 Construction Group. Originally a family company called Classic Paving, and now run by brothers Sebastian and Salvatore Canzoneri, it has grown to become one of the largest tilt panel builders in Melbourne. And they’ve recently finished working on a site in Ravenhall, northwest Melbourne that is about as far as you can possibly get from those small paving jobs their father started out doing all those years ago. “The Ravenhall construction is using more than 60,000 square metres of land,” explains Sal Canzoneri. “There is about 35,000 square metres of building, and the rest is car parking and landscaping. There’s 53 buildings on the site, all of various sizes.” Normally a job of this size would take a contractor up to 18 months to complete, but the C3 Construction Group tackled it in half that time. “We can do it quickly because we’ve got a good group working with us, and we’ve refined the process over 20 years to get the most efficiency out of manual labour,” says Sal. Years of experience in the business help them achieve those aims. “My father went into residential building originally, and over time moved into commercial construction. In the 90’s we joined the business and together we have contributed to the growth and expertise from a once-small business into what it is today,” Sal explains. “We always strive to be the best we can at this. We’re primarily builders with the capacity to do concrete in house—we’re a one-stop shop. Even if you didn’t have to worry about OH&S laws, your one peace of mind would dictate you’d want safety equipment of the highest possible standard, and manufactured or tested locally to ensure it meets local safety standards. That’s the point of difference local manufacturer and importer Beaver Brands maintains in the market, and according to General Manager Kevin Jacobson. “It definitely provides us with a point of differentiation when compared against other providers,” he explains. The company, which has been operating since 1977, attributes its success to a pro-active management team; the supply of quality product, a loyal customer base and commitment to service excellence through its national distribution network. But according to Jacobson, “What differentiates Beaver is our ability to tailor a solution for customers. Our turnaround time on made to order manufactured product is seven-to-ten days. At a local level we’re heavily invested in product testing and operate a ISO accredited quality management system which ensures we maintain full traceability of all manufactured items. Over the last 15 years the company has diversified into other categories, but maintained a focus on meeting or exceeding Australian standards says Jacobson. “We operate 19 full-time sewing machinists that are manufacturing five days a week, every day, often longer. Once manufactured all products undergo batch testing in accordance with ISO9001 registered Quality Sys-

Beaver uses this testing system to conduct Global Mark accredited tests of Industrial Safety Harnesses and Lanyards in accordance

with AS/NZS 1891.1 Today Beaver Brands is a member of the Working At Height Association (WAHA) which is an independent body of the major fall protection equipment manufacturers in Australia. WAHA facilitates a co-ordinated approach to increase the awareness of issues relating to Height Safety. “At the end of the day, it’s all about building enduring relationships and supplying quality products,” says Kevin Jacobson. “It’s a lot more than just grabbing a product and bringing it in. First opened in 1941, Simonds Stadium (Kardinia Park) is the home of the AFL Geelong Cats. In 2012, a $35mil upgrade was undertaken to build a new Southern Stand to increase the stadium capacity.

As the local ‘Direct to Site’ supplier of Sika products, AGM Fasteners consulted with the contractors, engineers and the Sika Technical Department to determine the most suitable product for each application.

The new 11,000 seat grandstand structure was created using precast elements that were transported to site and installed like a massive jigsaw puzzle. Once installed the structure required approximately 16km of joint sealant, to seal between the precast elements.

Sikaflex-Pro was used for caulking the seating platforms. Sikagrout-Ultra was used for underpinning the light towers.

Also part of the upgrade was the installation of light towers. These light towers were key to expanding the appeal of the venue, by opening it up to night AFL matches as well as domestic 20/20 cricket. To underpin the new towers, the project engineers required a structural grout, with high early and ultimate strength.
