Tip-top up top What you need to know about protecting the head, hearing, eyes and respiratory system in the workplace

hile you might think ‘up-top safety’ is about staying safe in high places, it’s actually about protecting some of the most important parts of your body from the long-term dangers associated with building and construction.

And choosing what to wear isn’t as simple as buying whatever is on the shelf, you need the right gear for the right job.

We’ve asked the experts in personal protective equipment (PPE) and they’ve given us the low-down on up-top safety.

Russell Brown, from MSA Safety, says: “It’s keeping people safe from hazards to eyes, ears, breathing and ultimately, of course, the top their head.

It’s not just a safety helmet, it’s also getting the mindset right for each worker to think safely, rather than just doing the job.”

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: DUST MASK VS HALF-FACE MASK

Picking between a dust mask and a half-face mask is the same as picking the right tool for the job—it’s always dependent on the situation at hand, and doing a proper assessment will keep you safe in the long run. “Dust masks are for mechanical dust and also for general dust particles in the air. Half-face respirators are used when there are gases or vapours present,” says Russell. “You need to have a risk assessment done on the work before you can actually choose.”

It’s also important not to keep your dust mask beyond its lifespan, or you could be damaging your respiratory system. “They’re generally issued for the day and then thrown away because they’re only a minimal protection [device], whereas half-face and full-face respiratory masks are used until you can taste the product… depending on the chemical or vapour. Dust masks are only used for daily

HEARING: EAR PLUGS VS EAR MUFFS

Unlike respiratory protection, the choice between ear plugs and ear muffs is more personal. It’s about what makes you feel comfortable while also ensuring you have the right level of protection for the job.

“There are certainly applications where ear plugs are more suitable than ear muffs and visa versa” says Harry Baume, the PPE manager at Beaver Brands.

“On the other hand, it becomes a personal choice where ear plugs can be fairly non-intrusive, easy to use and easy to discard. Ear plugs are more for shorter-term use—they’re usually disposable—whereas ear muffs are probably for people who need it over a longer period of time.”

Ear protection becomes necessary around the 85-decibel point, and it’s important to not take chances with your hearing by selecting the right gear and fitting it properly.

“Where there is an environment where the noise is fairly constant and you want to be sure that the hearing protection that you’re getting is also constant, then you would wear ear muffs because they provide a clamping action around the ears, which then guarantee the decibel reduction during the noise,” says Harry.

“Whereas, with ear plugs there is always the possibility that if the ear plug is not fitted precisely—or the foam of the ear plug flexes, or loses its flexibility—then the noise reduction can vary over the period”

Your safety precautions shouldn’t end there either. Once you’ve done your assessment and picked the right piece of equipment, you also need to make sure you’ve fitted it correctly. And while those manly beards might protect your face from the cold, if you need to wear a dust mask they’ll have to go.

“You must fit it properly for it to do its job. It doesn’t matter if it’s a dust mask—half-face or full-face—the person needs to be clean shaven. If they aren’t, it doesn’t give them the correct shielding,” says Russell.

“Any stubble can affect the shield, which means you can be breathing straight from your atmosphere.”

HEAD: HARD HAT VS BUMP CAP

The choice between hard hat and bump cap couldn’t be more different from the personal comfort-based decision of hearing protection—it’s all about specific guidelines and regulations.

“An industrial safety helmet must be worn when you are walking into areas where you are at risk from some object falling on your head, and there are mandatory requirements to wear a safety helmet on-site,” says David Starbuck, from Scott Safety.

“As far as a bump cap is concerned, that’s obviously not allowed to be worn in those types of situations. A bump cap is purely for knocks, bumps and scalp lacerations. Someone working in a confined area runs the risk of just knocking and bumping their head. They are fine for that type of application, but certainly not for any site where mandatory head protection is required.”

While hard hats are mainly about protection, they can also help with on-site direction.

“Stickers are helpful. It’s generally been found that stickers don’t impact on the integrity of an industrial safety helmet,” says David. “However, what we do say to people is: if you are going to use those, they should restrict them to stickers that are deemed absolutely necessary. The main reason being is that one of the checks you should be doing on your safety helmet is a visual inspection.”

EYES: GLASSES VS FACE SHIELDS

Unlike our other categories, glasses and face shields aren’t mutually exclusive. In fact, you get better protection when you wear both. “Face shields should be worn as additional protection around sensitive areas of the face not protected by spectacles or goggles,” says Alan Cahill, from Bollé Safety. He recommends face shields be worn “over spectacles and goggles in environments that threaten the structure of the entire face—sparks from grinding, molten flow, splash protection etc.”

When it comes to picking the right pair of glasses, it’s just like every other piece of PPE—getting the right type and level for your job.

“Medium impact eye protection is suitable for heavy industrial or extreme sunlight conditions where your eyes are at risk all the time. High impact is classified as a face shield, which has additional protection,” says Alan.

While assessing all of these factors might seem a little tricky to do at every job, it’s well worth it to protect yourself. We say ‘trust in the experts’—pick the right piece of PPE for the job, make sure it’s fitted correctly and always check over your equipment to keep it in good nick. 

In a study of 387 Australian workers that are required to wear safety footwear, 91% of the workers reported a foot issue with 72% of the issues being caused by their safety footwear1. Correctly fitting safety footwear can help reduce the majority of the foot complaints in workers. However the process of fitting safety footwear presents a number of unique challenges due to the rigidity of the toecaps. The four steps to ensuring correctly fitted safety footwear are outlined below.
