Staying safe, healthy and comfortable on the work site during summer can be a challenge, but there are plenty of advanced products that make life a lot easier.

HYDRATION STATION Most people who work in hot environments know the importance of staying hydrated, but few understand the best way to achieve that, says David Rhodes, a business development manager of THORZT, Paramount Safety Products’ electrolyte drinks business.

If a person gets out of bed and has breakfast and a coffee, or perhaps even a juice, then they likely arrive at work that morning already mildly dehydrated. And once the body is suffering thirst, it is very difficult to bring the balance back.

“The best way to start the day is with a glass of water, perhaps 150 to 250ml, as soon as you wake up,” says Rhodes, who takes some of his performance knowledge from his background as an Olympic kayaker. “That gets fluid into your system immediately. Then if you have another cup of water before you leave for work it sets you up well for the day.”

On the work site, for every three units of water you should have one unit of electrolyte drink to ensure you’re rehydrating as efficiently as possible, Rhodes says. He and his colleagues at Paramount spent over 12 months developing ranges of electrolyte drinks, including one that is 99.9 per cent sugar-free, specifically for the harsh environments experienced on work sites.

Then they developed an educational campaign to go along with it, to make sure workers and site managers knew

how best to take care of their health.

“A lot of people go home after a day of work feeling as if they’ve been hit by a truck. Some suffer in silence and take one or two Panadol, thinking it’s normal to feel like this after spending a day in the heat,” he says. “But just like in sport, a lot of it has to do with hydration. If you’re properly hydrated then you perform better, feel better and recover more quickly.”

SUN PROTECTION Of course, summer safety is about a lot more than hydration. Keeping skin protected is of major importance. The first line of defence against UV rays is work site clothing, which thankfully has taken several leaps forward over the last few years. Gone are the unbearably hot and uncomfortable garments and in their place have arrived various ranges of protective but breathable and vented fabrics.

Prime Mover Workwear builds back bodices, underarm splits and underarm mesh into several of its shirts and polos in order to assist with breathability.

“Our products are first and foremost a safety product,” says the company’s managing director Brett Birkill. “There has been a stack of awareness built around skin cancer and all workers are conscious of the risks. We have been balancing demands for a move away from discomfort and heat stress, to products with high UPF [ultra-violet protection factor] ratings and wearability in hot, sunny climates.”

All Prime Mover Workwear garments have a UPF rating of 35 to 50. A UPF35 rating means approximately 97 per cent of UV radiation is blocked. A UPF50 rating takes this protection up to at least 98 per cent. Even the lightweight products from the business have their materials treated to enhance the UPF rating.

David McInroy, director of XAX Apparel, says shirts are “at the bottom of the food chain” as far as buyers and wearers are concerned. “We have come a long way since the days when wearing a fluorescent shirt was like wearing a plastic bag,” McInroy says. “However there are a lot of great fabrics, in the sportswear field for instance, that we could be using but they add to the price, and cost is always a major consideration.

and miss—some people say they add warmth because of the extra layers. The greatest advancement in shirts has simply been in the recognition of the value of hivis clothing as a safety measure. People originally didn’t want to wear them, just like they didn’t want to wear steel-capped boots and safety glasses.”

RUB IT IN There are always parts of the body that fabrics can’t cover. The skin’s final line of defence is sunscreen. Sam Gurgone, director at Paramount Safety Products, says sunscreen has come a long way in the two years since regulations allowed the production of 50+ sunscreen.

“The move up from 30+ to 50+ sunscreen theoretically gives another two or three per cent UV protection,” Gurgone says. “But this is still very important.

Sunscreen with a 30+ rating protects against about 96 per cent of UV rays and 50+ takes this up to 98 per cent. The 50+

product actually has a different active ingredient, which can mean that people whose skin reacts badly to 30+ might be more comfortable with 50+.”

Many people don’t realise that sunscreen needs to be rubbed in for it to be most effective, Gurgone says. This is particularly important for those that use a spray-on product. The final rubbing of the sunscreen across the skin, rather than simply spraying on, creates the film that protects against UV rays. “And the more you use, the better,” Gurgone says.

“Some people just use a small amount, but sunscreen is more effective when it is applied liberally. You should use about 20 grams per limb, which is a blob the size of a 50-cent piece in your hand.”

THE EYES HAVE IT Fabrics and sunscreen aren’t much help when it comes to protecting the eyes.

In this arena, a worker’s best friend is

sunglasses with polarised lenses, says Alan Cahill, national sales manager for safety eyewear at Bollé Safety.

Even if you’re wearing a wide-brimmed hat, Cahill says, light will bounce and reflect off various surfaces, producing glare that can strain the eyes and cause reduced colour and depth perception.

But polarising technology in advanced safety glasses acts like mini Venetian blinds, blocking 99.99 per cent of UVA and UVB rays. When purchasing, Cahill says, be sure to check that the polarising film is embedded into the lens, as it is with all Bollé Safety products, so it can’t wear or scratch off.
