ELIMINATE CYCLICAL MAINTENANCE COSTS WITH THE LATEST INNOVATIONS IN

INDUSTRIAL FLOORING Ecotile interlocking floor tiles offer a comprehensive and sustainable solution to legacy flooring challenges within industrial and commercial applications.

C

hoosing a new industrial flooring system can be a daunting task. Balancing the need for a high performance, robust solution without compromising the design aesthetic is a tough enough task; then factor in tight budgets, the need to reduce direct costs and minimize costly downtime - as well as complying with constantly evolving health and safety regulations. The ongoing cost and downtime associated with the routine maintenance of flooring is frequently cited as the main reason for switching to a new solution. Demanding – and costly – cyclical maintenance requirements and the tired appearance and under-performance of existing flooring can seriously impact the bottom line. A new generation of interlocking PVC floor tiles – designed and manufactured by market leader Ecotile – have been engineered to solve industrial flooring’s greatest challenges. Ecotile designs and produces its comprehensive range at its UK production facility - providing sustainable, safe and durable flooring solutions that are installed in challenging commercial and industrial applications around the world. Both smart in terms of design and robust in terms of performance, Ecotiles combine the most important benefits to the industry in one, easy to install, package. James Gedye, CEO & Founder of Ecotile comments; “At Ecotile we recognised that many of our industrial and commercial customers were suffering with very serious legacy issues associated with their choice of flooring – and were not yet taking advantage of the latest advances in flooring technology. Furthermore, we frequently help new customers who may have only very recently installed a new

4 - Automation Update February 2017

flooring option, only to find that it does not comply with their insurance requirements or health and safety policies. At Ecotile we continually invest in international testing, certification and approval processes. In parallel, we frequently work with customers to resolve historic issues that they have experienced with an inappropriate flooring system. High quality, accredited flooring products and technical support are vital components of any operational plan and associated infrastructure; unfortunately, important issues such as fire or slip rating certifications are often overlooked until something goes wrong.” Ecotile interlocking floor tiles can be installed quickly and efficiently – without the need for downtime – thanks to their unique design features. The clean, loose lay of Ecotiles means that the installation process is simple and that no special preparation is required in the vast majority of cases. The floor can be fitted without the need for a damp proof membrane, screed of adhesive – significantly reducing VOC emissions, installation time and cost. The tiles can even be fitted over concrete before it has cured – and the floor is ready to use immediately. Gedye continues; “At Ecotile we invest heavily in R&D and engineer our production processes to ensure that we deliver greener, cleaner solutions to our customers. Our fully-automated manufacturing facility generates zero waste and our products are 100% recyclable. As a business, we only use raw materials that are compliant with internationally recognised and adopted standards for performance, quality and impact on the environment. ” www.ecotileflooring.com

Productivity 2000

®

- a Programmable Controller That Packs a Punch

T

The Productivity 2000® Programmable Controller was designed from the ground up by Automation Direct to do things better, more efficiently and more cost-effectively.

he free Productivity Suite software was developed with customer satisfaction as the primary concern. The result is programming software that is not only powerful and efficient, but easy to use. Tag name based programming style provides flexibility with no pre-defined, fixed memory maps and no wasted, unused memory allocations.

Programming Made Simple: Productivity really is at the core of P2000. The key to this is simplifying complex operations such as PID loops - made effortless by Productivity Suite’s easy-to-use instructions. Fill-in-the-blank, function block style configurations save time and unnecessary headaches. With 50MB of user memory you can configure, tune and control as many processes as you need, without limits, and the integrated auto-tuning functionality enable you to get up and running in no time.

Communications:

3 Wiring options:

With P2000 you get 5 communications ports with 3 different protocols as standard on every CPU. RS232, RS485, Ethernet, Remote I/O, USB (programming) – All Built in. Modbus RTU, Modbus TCP/IP, Ethernet/IP – are also all Included. Need even more serial connections? No problem, an optional 4 port serial communications module is available too.

The P2000 is all about productivity, even down to the wiring. Three wiring options are available:

Status Display: The OLED message display on the P2550 CPU gives instant status messages on your controller and can be configured for system fault detection & display. CPU event and error messages are automatically displayed and you can use the “LCD” instruction in your program to send custom messages from ladder code. Many of the Analogue & Discrete I/O modules have OLED displays to give real-time status display rather than just a blinking LED. Trouble shooting and process monitoring without having to connect your laptop, another boon for Productivity.

Hot-swappable I/O:

10 - Automation Update February 2017

A P2000 system can be configured to allow the CPU to remain in the RUN mode without selected I/O modules installed. Choose the “Enable all Hot Swap” option in the software to allow any module to be removed or configure each module separately & never lose production throughput for simple I/O module changes making night-shift panics a thing of the past.

1. Clamp Style Terminal Blocks – sprung clamp terminal blocks for fast wiring, simply strip & insert 2. Screw Style Terminal Blocks – the traditional choice – screw-clamp style 3. ZIPLink System - available for most I/O modules not only provides wiring time savings but can also provide fused isolation, clean wireways with easy, field-traceable connections, and confidence that panel wiring is correct.

Motion: P2000 provides high-speed (1MHz) inputs and outputs in Pulse/Direction, Step Up/Step Down and Quadrature signals, combined with Productivity Suite’s instructions, like Find Home (HOME), Simple Move and Velocity Move (SMOV), it’s easier than ever to program motion routines. Highspeed I/O modules combined with the communication of the P2-550 CPU give you a powerful motion application solution for a fraction of the usual cost. Hose Assemblies, Fittings & Valves backed by 100 years of innovation It’s not every year a company can celebrate 100 years of business so Dixon are proud to be celebrating their centenary. Founded in 1916 Dixon has grown to become a world leading manufacturer of hose fittings and related accessories for all industries with footprints across the globe; Dixon Group Europe, based in Preston, UK is responsible for sales across Europe, Africa and the Middle East. From the original Boss Steam Couplings to the latest innovative solutions, Dixon has grown to become a hose and coupling supplier who can offer more than just a great product. Dixon is committed to providing customers with the solutions to their fluid handling requirements across all industries, be this within the food & beverage industry, utilities, oil and gas or general industrial applications. The Dixon range includes couplings whether it be Cam & Croove, hygienic fittings, Boss™ couplings and clamps, interchangeable quick release couplings, to manual or actuated valves for both industrial and hygienic applications, and with a hose range which covers a broad spectrum of application and a team of experienced and technical sales personnel, Dixon can offer you a complete service advising on the most appropriate solutions for your application. When industrial hose and couplings are properly specified for the task, these assemblies perform their function flawlessly. However, the potential hazards of hose assemblies are very real. When we try to get them to do things they were never designed to do, such as running steam through a chemical hose or using cam and groove couplings for air, they fail miserably with sometimes catastrophic results. To avoid potential harm to personnel, site and equipment; and to prevent product loss, Dixon stresses the importance of inspecting all hose assemblies prior to each use. Here in the UK, Dixon offers, specialised support and bespoke engineered solutions from concept, to design, through to installation. Dixon’s onsite manufacturing and engineering department means that new designs, animations and 3D modelling can rapidly be produced to support customer’s requirements. The difference between Dixon and our competitors is our commitment to you. The opening of the Dixon Innovation Centre in Maryland, USA has enabled Dixon to come up with new product developments including the Vent-Lock™ Cam and Groove coupling and the new Hygienic Break Away coupling which increases safety and reduces cost savings. From world class customer service and manufacturing to the broadest product offering in the industry, and we’ve proven that for a century. TR Norway’s Space Odyssey: Supplying Fasteners for the New Mars Rover

TR

“We are extremely proud to be involved in the development of this new Mars Exploration Rover,” comments Jan-Erik Storsve of TR Fastenings Norway. “It is incredible to think that our fasteners will be used in outer space and is a testament to the high regard our products have with such a prestigious customer as FFI.”

The Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) which is designing and developing the Radar Imager on behalf of NASA, required components which were robust enough to withstand the extreme conditions of Mars’ atmosphere, where temperatures can plummet to minus 125 degrees centigrade. Drawing on its experience of working within the telecommunications and energy sector, TR Fastenings Norway was able to tap into the company’s global network of suppliers and deliver the components to FFI within the required timeframe.

A spokesperson for FFI commented, “The Radar Imager for Mars’ subsurface experiment is a ground-penetrating radar experiment for NASA’s Mars 2020 Rover. The radar antenna itself is an aluminium sheet metal construction assembled from several complex shaped parts. The harsh environment during launch, landing and operation on the Mars surface necessitates strict mechanical requirements to the antenna. Furthermore, the integration with the Rover is demanding with respect to the very precise tolerances. The antenna is assembled with CherryMax® aerospace certified blind rivets and the assembly process is aided by dedicated guiding tools, all delivered by TR Fastenings.”

Fastenings Norway, part of Trifast PLC, is pleased to have been asked to supply essential rivets and tools for a Radar Imager for the new NASA Mars Exploration Rover which launches in 2020. This is the first time components that TR have supplied have gone into space, and it is exciting to be a small part of future history.

The Radar Image will be used in Mars’ subsurface experiment, known as RIMFAX. It will add a new dimension to the Rover’s toolset by providing the capability to image the shallow subsurface beneath the Rover in unprecedented detail. It will explore the ancient habitability of its field area and select a set of promising samples that will eventually be returned to Earth. NASA’s Mars Exploration Rover Mission is an important, ongoing robotic space project which began in 2003 with the sending of two solar-powered roversm Spirit and Opportunity, to explore the Martian surface and geology. Primary among the mission’s new scientific goals is to search for a wide range of rocks and soils that hold clues to past water activity on Mars. The new Mars Exploration Rover will build on the work of the other rovers in its scientific goals of searching for evidence of ancient life on Mars. NEW PRODUCT:

NON-CONTACT MAGNETIC-SENSING DC CURRENT MEASUREMENT BY FLUXGATE

Claiming a first for the Marine market, Autonnic has just launched a DC current magnetic metering system ideally suited to marine electrical systems.

First shown at METS16 the A4710 has no electrical contact with the wire which carries the current and so it can just be clipped any insulated wire; there is no interruption or re-wiring or termination required because it measures amount and the direction by the magnetic field which the current creates. Measuring high currents by this means is relatively straight-forward but what Autonnic has done is to be good at low-currents too. The very high sensitivity and stability inherent in fluxgate technology means this method can now be used in low-cost Battery Monitoring applications. This is particularly demanding because the integration of small currents in a stable 16 - Automation Update February 2017

way over long periods of time is just as important to charge-management as a good high-current performance.

cables up to 13mm diameter and Autonnic supplies spacers to accommodate thinner conductors.

Not only it’s the device isolated electrically from the current, so that it will work on systems of any voltage, but it is also impervious to overload. Massive overload currents, hugely in excess of its 50A rating, which would cause a shunt-based system to overheat, merely cause this device to suspend measurement and then to resume when the current falls back in range.

The analogue outputs can be used directly by conventional meters and include a voltage for each direction. The digital output is a NMEA-0183 type of serial TTL data stream for direct integration with charge management, marine display systems or for feeding into on-board computer power management systems.

This + or - 50A device is the first in a series which will include higher and lower current versions. The A4710 can directly use battery

HBM CONVEYS THE SOLUTION! When LGC Automation in France decided to develop its weighing and packaging machines, fitting a weight sensor which incorporated PW20i load cells from HBM – a market leader in the field of test and measurement – was the obvious answer. Founded in 2012, LGC Automation has developed a range of weighing and packaging machines, which are Semi-automatic, economical and are designed to target the needs of small companies in the food and agriculture industry. All standard models offered by LGC Automation feature one or two product feed hoppers, with the products conveyed by means of vibrating rails or conveyor belts and a mechanism for filling sachets directly or via a bucket. This makes it possible to put a wide range of food products into sachets, including food products such as biscuits, dried fruits, coffee, berries and confectionary products etc, and small products sold by weight Weighing and packaging machines from LGC Automation offer short production rates, manual controls, co compressed air installation, simple mechanical and electronic designs and a small footprint, which provides customers with valuable space saving benefits. Opting to use its own circuit board for the processing electronics, LGC Automation decided to fit all standard weighing and packaging machines with a weight sensor from HBM, which incorporated PW20i load cells, which are optimised for dynamic weighing. Easy to fit, with two screws to fix it to the machine structure and two screws to fix it to the plate, the PW20i has been designed to meet the requirements of filling sachets, ranging from a few tens of grams to 1.5 kg with measurement accuracy in the order of a gram. The PW20i also offers protection against overloading, which is an important requirement, as the bagging plate can be exposed to shocks, for example as a result of operating errors.

enables LGC Automation to produce simple, operational and easy to use machines at a very competitive price. Designed to offer longevity, Therry Cerisay, Founder of LGC Automation concludes: “The cells installed on our machines inspire confidence in every way, especially as they are provided by a leading manufacturer with extensive experience in weighing with operations all over the world”.
