KARDEX: ROBOTICS DELIVER FAST ORDER PICKING Yesterday’s intralogistics solutions are simply not sophisticated enough to match today’s demands. The smartest and latest technology will move companies from good to great if they utilise the features to their ultimate potential.
B
y leveraging warehouse automation to its limits, order fulfillment will see significant cost savings and enhanced performance. As a result, companies can stay ahead of competition by meeting market requirements, such as sameday delivery and buy online, pick up in store. To achieve this, they should consider replacing manual order picking and replenishment with modern technologies while working with an intralogistics partner that understands their market. An experienced partner who delivers transparent, fast and scalable intralogistics. In association with Robomotive, Kardex provides customers with a substantial advantage by integrating robots that pick, process and place single items and full cases to and from any picking stations and storage systems. The Kardex Vertical Lift Module (VLM) Shuttle XP maintains an outstanding track record and reputation in the retail and e-commerce market. It is designed to meet increasing order expectations, high product availability and optimise order fulfillment processes. A Shuttle XP features an enclosed shelf-based storage system designed to increase storage capacity in a more compact footprint. Operating on the ‘goods-to-person’ principle, the VLM increases productivity by delivering required goods directly to the operator during order fulfillment. These systems are modular and flexible in design, which enables future adjustments for your business needs. Taking the Kardex Shuttle a step further, Robomotive pick and place robots manage the stress often felt in
10|
retail and e-commerce warehouses. Many companies face significant challenges with order picking due to the increasing complexity of market requirements. In some instances, workers first separate products visually and then pick and place them. In other cases, workers pick single pieces from the storage system and then bring them to another source (e.g., packing machine or sorting system). Both applications are characterized by high demands on workforce accompanied by corresponding monotony. By working flawlessly 24/7, Robomotive pick and place robots take over manual processes like order picking, replenishing, (de)palletising, and more, relieving existing workforce and enabling accelerated speed and accuracy in order fulfillment. With nine years of experience working with rapid image processing and by using a one-ofa-kind, internally developed 3D-Vision software, the pick and place robots replicate the exact precision and synchronisation of a person’s hand-eye coordination to create a multi-functional, versatile and agile work performance. Robomotive’s technology combines software and hardware mechanisms by using 3D cameras, grippers and smart software algorithms. The technology allows the robots to recognize, grip and locate objects precisely. They provide safe, high-performance picking and placing for various items commonly seen in e-commerce such as cubes, tubes, cylinders and various other shapes. Kardex are hosting a webinar on how you can revolutionise your order picking with robotics: click here to register for the webinar or go to: https://www.kardex.com/en/webinar-robotics-2022
AZM150 SOLENOID INTERLOCK: SLIMLINE DESIGN WITH 360 ROTATING HEAD AND 1400 NEWTON CLAMPING FORCE O
The AZM150 solenoid interlock can be combined with three different actuators for different installation situations: a straight actuator for sliding doors, an angled actuator for large revolving doors and a movable actuator for smaller revolving doors. One of the plus points of the interlock is the rotating actuator head which can be locked simply by putting the lid on rather than a screw fitting. The rotating actuator head has two feeder slots to enable a range of installation positions and approach options. This makes the interlock really flexible to use. The AZM150 is an electromechanical design which can be combined with high safety standards. The interlock comes with a low coding level as standard but is also available with an optional high coding level. The benefit for users: In accordance with ISO 14119, a higher coding requires fewer measures to prevent the bypassing of locking mechanisms, such as fitting out of range or in a concealed position. Schmersal is the only manufacturer which can offer electromechanical safety switches and solenoid interlocks with high coding levels. Scan the QR code to see the AZM150 in action or visit our website for more information.

Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant (REP) is a multi-million pound investment in the local economy and in carbon-neutral energy production. The 38MW plant created nearly 300 jobs during construction; and now - while saving around 50,000 tones of CO2 per annum - the REP supports employment for over 80 locals: including 30 on-site operatives, and more than 50 people in the supply-chain.
A
nd it’s not only jobs that the plant provides to the local surroundings. The REP generates electricity for 65,00 homes in the area, with surplus heat being harnessed and provided free of charge for district heating in local buildings: like Sleaford’s public swimming pool, a bowling centre, football club, primary school, and the council offices. The plant uses proven technology aimed at the clean and efficient combustion of straw, the by-product of wheat production. The majority of this fuel is secured from farms within a 3050 mile radius, though it can also burn woodchip biomass as an alternative. All waste ash produced by the plant is recycled as crop fertiliser.
The process of heat and power generation Agricultural waste products, in the form of straw bales and woodchip, are delivered to the power plant. There, a specialised fuel feeding system transports the biomass fuel to the

adjacent ash silos via a screw feeder.
Each of the banks of 12 solenoids operate off 8 common accumulator manifold cylinder. The pressure in this cylinder supplies the air to the bank of bag-cleaning solenoids, each of which are triggered in sequence. Any failures cause a deviation in pressure, indicating a potential bag problem or valve failure. Originally, these were fitted with very simple pressure switches, which would give an alarm output if low or high pressure thresholds were exceeded. Faults and failures are not an uncommon situation across 96 continually operating valve sets. In the event of an issue, engineers on the plant would have to closely check each pressure switch to see their status and fault-find. It was time consuming and caused delays, reducing throughput and increasing downtime for the plant.
boiler’s grate where it is combusted at about 1,400°C. Water circulates through the boiler’s evaporator system turning it to steam, while internal superheaters raise the steam temperature up to 540°C. The resulting steam drives a turbine to produce electricity for the grid, and any surplus heat is harvested. VEGA products are used across the site for applications like level in woodchip silos, chute and conveyor blockage detection, and point-level switching.
Cleaning the waste gases After any excess heat is recovered, the flue-gas is cleaned via a grid of bag filters. This process involves the cooled combustion gasses passing through banks of hanging bags, leaving the ash residue on their surface. The system consists of 8 banks of cylinders, each bank has a row of 8 vertical bag filters, each approximately 3m long. Each row is connected to a solenoid-actuated pneumatic cylinder, which agitates the row with a short blast of air, causing the dust to fall into the hoppers below. These hoppers are then emptied into

is a new high performance Roller Chain which forms part of the Donghua Chain Group’s Premium range. It is aimed at sectors that use high demand drives such as Timber, Waste & Recycling and Mining & Quarrying. The new chain is designed and manufactured by the Hangzhou Donghua Chain Group on a purposebuilt production line which uses new production techniques and new surface treatments. Bob Wellsbury, managing director at Donghua Limited, has been at the helm of the UK subsidiary of the worldwide chain manufacturer since 2009. Their head office in Wolverhampton boasts a busy sales office, a 25,000 sq ft warehouse, testing laboratory and technical workshop. He explains why this chain is so unique. “Our Roller Chain is categorised into three ranges: Standard, Solution and Premium. We launched a new Solution chain in 2021 called EXL Chain which has proved popular with our distribution market, and this year we launch the first chain in our Premium range – X3.”
“The X3 Chain is designed with a unique pin coating, optimised plate geometry and high precision stamping. Together, these elements deliver unique performance, offering end-users a firstclass chain and unbeatable value for money.” New technologies make higher precision stamping possible, maximising the quality of the X3 Chain. The high plate load limit is ensured by selecting high performance material and subjecting it to isothermal heat treatment, using calibrated pin and bushing holes, and having an improved press fit between the pins and plates to guarantee maximum fatigue strength. The use of new hardening technologies and special anti-friction coating technology on the pin surface minimises the friction coefficient between the pin and the bushing, resulting in extreme wear resistance.

Optimas Solutions Leading the Charge As efforts to achieve climate goals and net zero gains momentum the pressure for companies to adapt and embrace this once-in-a-lifetime eco revolution, is on. None more so than in the automotive sector where consumer and commercial manufacturers are firmly under the microscope to deliver against targets and legislation outlined by governments worldwide. In somewhat of a tipping point, early adopters of low-emission technology and electric vehicle frontrunners such as Tesla, Nissan and Cummins have been joined in this mammoth task by notable industry big names Ford and Bentley - to name just a few. However, this EV revolution and the challenges of increasing range and performance, especially for commercial vehicles, has ignited and inspired a new generation of automotive builders. Indeed, some of the most significant achievements in developing what is still a relatively new technology, can be attributed to industry start-ups. While many of these start-ups are founded by automotive industry veterans and technical skill sets transferred from prior development and application of conventional internal combustion engines, electric vehicles pose a new set of challenges. The questions end-consumers are interested in are “what range is achievable in this vehicle?” and, “is the infrastructure in place to charge my vehicle?” And so, performance is key - even down to the nuts and bolts that fasten the vehicles together. Light weighting,
18|
insulation and material choice are considerations that carry more importance than ever before, directly effecting vehicle performance, range, and overall cost. With a rich and vast heritage in the automotive sector, to global fastener and component distribution and manufacturing experts, Optimas Solutions, this subject is right in the company’s wheelhouse. Look beyond the businesses core competencies - the supply of these essential parts and related inventory management systems - we find a team of highly experienced and knowledgeable engineers. This engineering support is on-hand from design stage to production with the singular goal of analysing and streamlining the customers’ bill of materials through part assortment analysis, consolidating SKUs and product re-engineering - finding the right solutions to save costs. Fastener selection, if not refined and optimised, can inherently pose unnecessary roadblocks, and that can start from the very first set of designs. Part proliferation is one byproduct of the design process that adds complexity and can rapidly bloat a bill of materials, particularly amongst
start-ups. Through a programme of rationalisation these parts could be unified, saving money. Leveraging commonly used industrystandard parts to speed up sourcing and delivery and identifying other areas of improvement to reduce costs, assembly time and mitigate contamination risks – such as making a simple switch to SEMS screws with captive washers, are examples that engineering support could find as areas in need of attention. Head of Business Development at Optimas Solutions, Simon Wright, commented, "Optimas is delivering first class support to OEM customers embarking on EV and EV infrastructure projects for the first time. Leveraging experienced engineers and expert global sourcing to bring real value and results to the partnerships we have formed." Automotive and EV construction, whether the vehicles themselves or charge points, is then, a metaphorical minefield of technical performance challenges, down to the very smallest of parts but it is a challenge in which Optimas are leading the charge. In the space and satellite zone, the ExoMars Rover, Bruno will return following huge interest at the 2021 exhibition.
professionally,” explained Alison Willis, Director at Easyfairs, the organiser of Advanced Engineering and Lab Innovations. “At last year’s event, we found that more visitors and exhibitors were attending with a purpose — whether that was to connect with a new supplier or purchase a particular piece of equipment. AE Connect, our digital platform that helps exhibitors and visitors connect and arrange meetings in advance of the show, really helped facilitate this.”
This year, Advanced Engineering will once again be co-located with sister show, Lab Innovations, giving visitors and exhibitors more opportunities to collaborate across sectors. It is also offering more networking opportunities with a new composites networking area and drinks reception, which will be sponsored by PRF Composites.
“Our industry is always innovating and releasing new technologies that are even more impressive when you see them in person. Take Advanced Engineering’s Enabling Innovation competition as an example — inperson events give start-ups like those involved in this the chance to showcase their ground-breaking products to the rest of the engineering community.”
“Over the last two years, our whole industry has learned the value of inperson interaction, both personally and

meaning that attendees scan a personalised badge to receive digital literature and exchange virtual business cards with suppliers. As well as reducing the amount of paper being used, the smart badge technology also helps decrease the spread of COVID-19. Over 75 per cent of last year’s exhibitors rebooked for 2022, including Qimtek, a business that helps industry buyers and designers find new subcontract manufacturing partners. At the exhibition, marketing manager, Dean Munkley said, “The show’s been really good — far busier than I expected. We’ve probably taken more leads than we have at any show over the last three years. There was a lovely mix of people and it was great speaking to anyone from students to directors. There’s such a good variety of suppliers here too — we’ll definitely be returning.” Exhibitor space is selling out fast. To book your stand, visit www.advancedengineeringuk.com and make an enquiry. WOLF PROVIDES CERTIFIED LIGHTING FOR SAFE USE IN HYDROGEN ATMOSPHERES Hydrogen, a clean, carbon neutral energy source emitting no CO2, is often described as the fuel of the future, though it’s already used across a growing range of applications in the UK and overseas.
W
hile acknowledging that hydrogen’s ‘green planet’ credentials are highly encouraging, technical experts at Wolf Safety believe the risks it can potentially cause should not be underestimated. Hydrogen is an element which creates a highly hazardous explosive atmosphere, not only because of its low ignition and high combustion properties but also due to its tendency to leak easily from storage tanks. It is increasingly being used to power fuel cell vehicles including buses, trucks and a test train now on trial in Scotland. Future applications could include powering construction machinery, ships, even aircraft. Wolf Safety, global leaders in the design and manufacture of portable and temporary lighting for use in hazardous areas, are well aware of hydrogen related risks and offer safe, certified lighting solutions for use in hydrogen atmospheres. Says Michael Morley, the company’s Technical Director: “It is important that while developing new applications for hydrogen in pursuit of green and clean solutions, no-one should lose sight of its potential to cause explosion. “Engineers and technicians working in locations where hydrogen, or other explosive gases or vapours, could be present can be confident that Wolf has a safe, certified and effective portable and temporary lighting solution which can be tailored to meet their specific needs. “The use of ATEX or IECEx certified lighting is a vital safety precaution in hydrogen atmospheres.”
22|
The company’s range of portable lighting, temporary lighting and power distribution solutions includes products already certified for safe use in workplaces where hydrogen gas could be present. They include Wolf’s robust yet highly portable WF-300®XL and WF-250XL LED floodlights which are used worldwide, especially by engineers inspecting, repairing and maintaining
storage tanks in the oil and gas industry. Mains and low voltage versions of floodlights and luminaires, battery powered LED work lights, torches, handlamps, head torches and warning lights are also available from Wolf Safety. For technical information visit: www.wolfsafety.com

TF Automation support Really Useful Products with process automation solutions for over 15 years TF Automation was approached by Really Useful Products (RUP) over fifteen years ago to support with automation in the company’s production processe RUP has expanded and evolved into a fully integrated lean manufacturing business now across two sites in West Yorkshire. Really Useful Products, design, manufacture, market and distribute their own range of innovative storage solutions including plastic boxes, drawer units, dividing trays, folding boxes and racking. The TF project design team were tasked with designing a machine to fix two handles and apply a bar code label to RUP’s range of 0.14L boxes. The machine was required to align the handles in the correct way so as to enable the machine to attach a handle to each side the boxes and then apply a bar code label. The machine consists of a bowl feeder into which the moulded handles are added, this then aligns the handles and conveys them into the machine to enable fixing to the boxes, using a rotary to access each side of the box. The boxes then have the bar code automatically applied as they exit the machine to be packed. This machine fits seamlessly in the production process as the boxes come straight off the moulding machine, along a conveyor and into the box assembly and labelling machine, and out the other end straight on to packing and despatch. Prior to this the handles were fitted onto the boxes manually which was extremely time consuming and a difficult and awkward job and was very labour

March 2022 intensive. The machine dramatically improved throughput of the finished items to keep up with increasing demand. We have manufactured and supplied three box assembly and labelling machines to carry out this task and in recent months all three machines have been returned for refurbishment bearing in mind they have been in continuous production for around 15 years. The machines have been stripped down and cleaned and reassembled and have been returned and are now fully reinstalled and working efficiently. The TF design team are delighted that the machines are still performing to enable improvements in efficiency for RUP and take pride in the fact that their design and engineering solution is still valid and current several years later. RUP has a number of Engel moulding machines producing the various size of storage boxes and we have worked in a three-way partnership successfully over the years ensuring RUP achieve production efficiencies in a costeffective way. To support this partnership, TF Automation has designed and supplied “end of arm” tooling, which is attached to the robot arm to take the finished boxes out of the mould machine and convey to packing and despatch. The TF team also designed an in-mould labelling machine for RUP’s rainbow desk tidy to add branding to the box. TF continues to support RUP with their ongoing continuous improvement program to increase efficiencies in production by providing cost effective process automation solutions

Snap-on’s Level 5™ asset management system is network ready As engineering managers come under pressure to meet demanding schedules, often with fewer skilled hands and tighter budgets, the benefits of professional tool storage and management become stronger than ever.
S
nap-on Industrial’s Level 5™ automated total asset management system brings order to any workplace, enabling engineers and technicians to know exactly where to find every tool they need, when they need it, saving time and easing stress. How useful would it be if all valuable tools could be tracked from one central point? Snap-on’s Level 5™ system makes that possible. It provides complete reports on everything
managers or supervisors need to keep an eye on. And then there’s FOD. The threat of foreign object damage is a real and present danger in many engineering workplaces. Using Snap-on Level 5™ minimises the risk of human error, as automated tool control constantly tracks every tool and detects which tools have been removed or returned, ensuring greater protection against FOD. Engineered to track individual tools by user, without bar codes, scanners, RFID tags or other add-ons, the system works at the speed its users demand. Other systems require additional steps to scan or log activity. The Snapon system does this automatically so users save time and don’t have to depend on other steps to ensure accurate results. Snap-on’s Level 5™ ATC boxes are network ready, using either Ethernet or wireless connection. That enables users to review activity at all Level 5 boxes in their location from one central computer, avoiding the time consuming need to inspect each box.
26|
Major benefits of the system include: • No individual tool scanning required; • No RFID tags to install or replace; • No limitations on tool size: from ¼” screwdriver bit upwards; • Intuitive interface, with an easy to use touchscreen • Audible voice announcement of tool removal and replacement • Automatic locking for maximum security • Errors announced and displayed to indicate incorrect tool position or advise when a drawer is not closed. Says Richard Packham, Director UK & Europe for Snap-on Industrial: “Snapon’s automated system takes asset management to an entirely new level. The ability to monitor several boxes from one central computer offers a huge advantage to engineering managers.” For technical details visit: www.snaponlevel5.com call (01536) 413904 or e-mail: ukindustrialmarketing@snapon.com

Forterro Structures for Accelerated Growth in Europe ERP Software Provider Announces Regional Organisation Design and Appoints Industry Veterans to lead Northern, Western and Central Europe
Forterro, a European provider of ERP software solutions to more than 10,000 midmarket manufacturing and production companies, today announced a regionally oriented organisation design that will oversee its eleven localised European ERP product brands. The group has invested in the appointment of three industry veterans, who will serve in the role of president for each region (Northern, Western, and Central Europe), reporting to CEO Dean Forbes. “Our business houses specialised ERP product lines, led by in-country teams who understand local context and invest in being close to the customer,” said Dean Forbes, CEO Forterro. “With this change, we’ll continue to honour our principle of each brand being local, whilst giving each region the power to accelerate growth through access to exceptional talent, strategic skillsets, and the resources and governance possibilities offered by the scale of the full Forterro organisation.” Appointed to the role of regional presidents are Richard Furby for Northern Europe (Nordics and UK), David Coste for Forterro Western Europe (French speaking countries as well as Spain and Italy), and Marcus Pannier for Central Europe (DACH, Poland and Eastern European countries).
28|
Furby previously oversaw and significantly grew Forterro’s abas ERP product line, a role he will now hand over to Pannier. Furby will act in a dual role moving forward, serving as president of M&A for the group, as well as overseeing Forterro’s Jeeves, Garp, and 123insight products as President of Forterro Northern Europe. Coste currently leads Forterro’s Sylob, Clipper, ProConcept, Helios and Silog ERP products and will continue to do so as President of Forterro Western Europe. Pannier comes to Forterro from ERP vendor IFS, where he most recently held the position of managing director, DACH. When Pannier officially joins Forterro on March 1, he will be responsible for overseeing the abas, myfactory, and BPSC product brands as President of Central Europe. The local management teams operating each of Forterro’s products remain in place, with their responsibilities changing very little, if at all. As each of Forterro’s ERP product lines is fortified with group- and region-level capital, customers will continue to enjoy local service, powered by global resources.

De-risk your shipping business with 5 Star packing crates It may not come as a surprise to learn that a damaged product can cost your business up to 17 times more than the original cost of shipping it. The financial impact goes hand in hand with reputational cost, with damaged goods causing reduced customer loyalty and loss of business. Packaging plays a crucial role in customer satisfaction and ultimately, retention. At 5 Star, we are obsessed with our packaging, be it flight cases that we have been manufacturing for over 40 years to our latest addition, wooden packing crates. As with all 5 Star flight cases and foam inserts, our custom-built packing crates are CNC-machined for accuracy and repeatability and feature sprung metal clasps to secure the individual panels to each other as well as heavy-duty castors for easier transportation without the need for a dolly or hand truck. As every single component is vital, 5 Star works with leading flight case and crating hardware manufacturer Penn Elcom because they produce the highest quality steel products, ensuring maximum performance, reliability and durability. Penn Elcom’s spring locks, for example, have been custom designed to allow secure fastening of our crates, particularly those that need to be reused or retained for the return of goods, but also allow ease of opening once the crate has reached its destination. The spring design allows for tolerance in the wood to minimise damage to the crate panels and other crating components, and are easier to use than conventional screw fixings.
32|
Companies that haven’t yet invested in quality packaging should remember that damaged goods and the resulting perception of lack of reliability are a major block to repeat business. That is why at 5 Star, we serve our clients with stress-free packaging experience, with our products made to transport almost anything, anywhere, safely and securely. Again and again and again. PRODUCT PROFILE - DELIVERING DOUBLE INSPECTION ADVANTAGES In a space-saving product inspection breakthrough, Fortress Technology has custom-engineered a unique twin aperture metal detector and dual lane Raptor checkweigher which delivers unmatchable operational efficiency.
The custom-designed dual lane Raptor Checkweigher is fed by a twin aperture metal detector to provide complete quality control, with the ability to work in unison with a dual head Vertical Form Fill Seal (VFFS) bagging machine and match output speeds of 120-140ppm. The compatible system utilizes a modular plastic chain radius conveyor belt to provide optimal lane spacing for the dual aperture detector and meet end user requirements.
Dual lane conveyer and independent programming The unique dual-lane version of Fortress Technology’s multi-aperture metal detector comprises a single unit split into two smaller dedicated apertures for each lane that acts as
36|
independent metal detectors. Both simultaneously inspecting products, the lanes remain programmed to run independently to help to minimise interruption and provide extra inspection and weight verification capacity.
Air blasting abilities Using air blast nozzles between the two outfeed conveyors, the Raptor Checkweigher can independently remove contaminated products into lockable, stainless steel reject bins. The air blast devices provide quality control by detecting both metal and weight rejects in each lane, whereby contaminants are blasted outwards to their retrospective bins, equipped with sensors.
Collates critical data The Raptor’s load cells can weigh, analyse, capture and report data simultaneously to ensure absolute traceability and compliance with retailer Codes of Practice and QA protocols. Both the metal detector and Raptor Checkweigher capture easy-to-read live OEE data and benefit from integrated Contact Reporter software. In 2021, the Raptor Checkweighing series won the prestigious Food Processing Lean Manufacturing accolade. Commending the synergy between metal detection and weight verification technology, judges hailed the high operational efficiency, cost savings and utilisation of common elements.

Smart Cart Gets Smarter C J Waterhouse company first developed its Smart Cart minor ingredients system back in the early 2000’s when the semi-automatic prototype system was installed at a UK rubber compounding facility. Since that time the system has seen several advancements such as wireless communications, fully automated bag manufacture & placing and bag-in-bag dosing systems. The latest, fourth generation system will see the greatest technological advancement to date with the introduction of Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) weigh carriages. All previous generations have been based around mobile weigh carriages with integrated bag clamps. These carriages, or Smart Carts reside upon a mono-rail track and travel to the material dosing stations situated around the track perimeter. The system permits large numbers of material dosing stations and provides high throughput, high accuracy, contamination free weighing of minor ingredient batches incorporating numerous weigh carriages to provide simultaneous multi-batch production. Late in 2021 C J Waterhouse company were approached by one of the UK’s largest manufacturer of bread products to develop and supply a minor ingredients system for their extensive range of ingredients and recipes capable of handling their demanding throughput requirements. Development of the 4th generation system has now begun and although is based upon the original concept
40|
of moving mobile weigh carriages to feeder stations the track and bus system will be abolished and replaced with self powered AGV’s. The removal of the track assembly and use of AGV’s permits greater flexibility, future expansion and improves cleanliness together with providing an advanced system at the forefront of automation technology. In addition to the AGV development the latest version of the Smart Cart system will also incorporate integrated
vibratory sieving solutions into each of the material dosing stations, end of line metal detection and fully automated palletisation. The system comprises of two identical production lines each comprising of 22 material dosing stations and 12 Smart Cart weigh carriages with a further 2 spares. The maximum throughput of 500 bags per hour is achieved by running the same materials and recipes on each line, however the two lines can be combined to produce a 44 material

system with up to 24 weigh carriages. This flexibility enables the customer to achieve their manufacture requirements with respect to throughput and recipe range. The duplex system also permits service / repair works to be conducted on one line whilst the second line remains operational. The control philosophy is based upon Siemens PLC hardware for material dosing, weighing and plant automation and Siemens SIMOVE software for AGV operation. Our windows based BCS-Series (batching control software) provides recipe handling and production scheduling functionality together with comprehensive data logging and batch reporting.

Efficient material flow thanks to Kanban components The Kanban principle is usually used to optimise material supply in assembly and production processes. Workpieces and assembly material are supplied to the individual process stations via flow racks with roller tracks or roller conveyors. This ensures fast and efficient provision of material in accordance with production control. By avoiding unnecessary lifting tasks, there is also less strain on the employees. Roller tracks are used in flow racks or Kanban racks to ensure that the handling cases and cardboard boxes are transported safely. They are available in lengths of up to 4500 mm. The roller spacing is either 33 mm or 49.5 mm. In the case of longer roller tracks or higher loads, it is advisable to place
44|
profiles underneath for support. The rollers are mounted on steel axles and are available with and without flanges. This application uses mk’s RBS-P 2065/2066 gravity roller conveyor which is ideal for use as a roller carrier transporting material flows between picking stations. Depending on the total load and the required spacing, rollers with dimensions from 20 to 50 mm can be selected. An inclination of 1–2° usually ensures a reliable component feed. Over longer lines and steep inclines, it is possible to reach high speeds. In this case, the kinetic energy requires a damped deceleration. The mk roller conveyor system with gravity drive (RBS) is typically used in industrial applications for semiautomatic interlinking at picking stations or kanban shelves. An extensive
selection of different roller types makes the system extremely flexible and suitable for a wide range of applications. The conveyors are available in both straight and curved configurations. The roller diameters of 20, 40 or 50 mm ensure that both large and small workpieces can be transported reliably and without interruption. The longitudinal slots in the profile beams can be used to attach side rails, stands, sensors and other accessories. Products can be transported along a decline either by hand or using gravitational force. A slope of 1 to 2° is usually sufficient for transporting products with gravitational force. Please note that high speeds can be reached with long lines and/or steeper slopes. This kinetic energy will require dampened deceleration. ENGINEERING UPDATE
EPLAN Platform 2022:
collaboration and partnership Ken Christie, country director for EPLAN UK, has already accompanied 13 new releases since 2008. But none like this: the EPLAN Platform 2022 has a completely new technical basis, a new design and many additional functions. He reveals more in the below interview. What was the reason for the further development of the EPLAN Platform 2022? For a long time, a complete overhaul of the software has been planned and being prepared by our development team. As we changed to a subscription model this year, it was a suitable time to implement other innovations. With the move to subscription, we’re strengthening relationships with our customers, and with an exchange and partnership-like cooperation, we get straight to the point with regard to software requirements. The new Platform has become more intuitive, more flexible, and overall, more productive. It is also integrated into a whole range of accompanying measures and solutions, such as our partner program and the developments in the cloud. In other words: it’s a complete package!
What do the innovations mean for the software users? That depends on whether we are talking to existing customers or new customers. Whilst existing customers can benefit from the optimised interface for better working, new customers can quickly
become productive with our software as it’s easy to use. However, to suit both existing and new customers, the intuitive interface is based on operating concepts that are well known to users, which offers a high recognition value. This can be seen in the integrated ribbon bars or the backstage view, which most

people are already familiar with from other established software products. Overall, this significantly improves user ergonomics. Users can also benefit from improved workflows as we have brought together all developments from over the

years in the context of “insert” with the new insert centre. This will mean new customers can start with little effort and existing customers will clearly see the advantages after a short period of getting used to it. Initial feedback from the beta tests indicates that this is correct.
What were the challenges during the development? Our solutions are not simply an ECAD system, but are often a kind of “backbone” for engineering and product development for companies. They are deeply integrated into the customer’s infrastructure and strategy and can be planned over years in terms of investment. This goes hand in hand with a huge responsibility. We really want to tailor our solutions specifically to the needs of our target markets. However, this will only be a success if we work very closely together and enjoy the trust of our customers. UK Manufacturer Extends its Protection of Stored Bulk Crops Across the Globe Titan Enterprises and Stored Crop Conservation Limited celebrate 20 years of collaboration as Stored Crop reports a significant shift in their business model and growth. Agrochemical specialists, Stored Crop use a modified application system to extend the life of crops before and after harvest and maintain healthy storage environments.
H
aving established themselves in a niche market, designing fogging systems to treat customer environments, over the last 12 months Stored Crop has seen a demantd for their crop ‘fogging’ machines installed around the world. Nick Green, Stored Crop’s CEO, enthuses: “Where we are primarily servicing the food packaging industry and major food processing companies in the UK, our fogging machines are now being requested by an international market. This has significantly increased our manufacturing demand, and Titan’s excellent service and response to demand has been a great support.” Stored Crop’s fogging machines utilise Titan’s 900 series turbine flow meters to record and monitor the volume
48|
of dispensed chemical used to treat and protect crops, grain stores, poultry units and glasshouses. Hygiene and the elimination of pests and fungus is a major problem in the storage of bulk crops in modern agriculture. From the preparation of buildings used for food production through to mass food stores, cleanliness is essential to ensure the quality of the raw materials. For example, when potatoes are put into storage, the efficient application of a sprout-suppressing agrochemical extends the life of the product. Titan Enterprises and Stored Crop have much in common, both being UK-based manufacturers, family-run companies and specialists in their field, so it’s not surprising that the relationship is still going strong.
Nick Green reflects: “Early on in our operation, we found a sprayer that utilised Titan’s flowmeters. We trialled one of Titan’s measuring devices, working with them to adjust the flow meters to meet our exact requirements. We use both the PVDF and stainless-steel cased mini turbines as they are able to function accurately and reliably with aggressive chemicals where careful control of application volume is absolutely critical.” Stored Crop’s system for fogging agricultural food stores and crops with a very fine mist of appropriate agrochemical, ensures the whole volume is treated evenly. The flow and volume of dispensed chemical is measured

by Titan’s 900 series mini turbine flowmeters to ensure consistent and safe dispersal of these controlled chemicals. The durability and chemical resistance of Titan’s flow meters means that the different ‘fogging’ chemicals dispensed through Stored Crop’s machines, can be used in Europe, Argentina, Russia, China and Pakistan, for example, where each country has its own regulations regarding chemicals used for this process. Neil Hannay, Senior R&D Engineer with Titan Enterprises said: “These turbine flow
March 2022
measuring devices are an ideal low-cost component for OEM applications. The combination of chemically resistant flow meter design and low flow rates to ensure precision measurement is well suited for chemical dispensing or batch-filling systems.” Titan’s 900 series offers 6 flow ranges from 0.05 to 15 L/min. The sapphire bearings give long life and reliability, and the choice of body materials makes this the ideal choice for metering aggressive chemicals, including ultra-pure water.

Securing the Smart Factory with a DMZ The Smart Factory trend is growing, and why not? Sending your plant data to the IT department or putting it on the cloud opens possibilities for real-time analysis, AI, predictive maintenance, and more. Of course, your plant network must remain secure.
A
critical key for industrial network security is using a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone). High-level agencies from the European Commission to the White House are specifying guidelines published by NIST, whose SP-800-82 document says, “The most secure, manageable, and scalable control network and corporate network segregation architectures are typically based on a system with at least three zones, incorporating one or more DMZs.” These three zones are the control zone (OT), the corporate zone (IT),
50|
and the DMZ itself. Firewalls are used to separate these zones, to ensure that only the correct data passes from one to the other. Using a DMZ eliminates any direct link between corporate networks and control networks and allows only known and authenticated users to enter the system at all. How to best implement these guidelines? It's not enough to simply use OPC UA in the plant and MQTT to connect to the IT department or cloud. Neither of these protocols was designed for passing data through a DMZ.
VPNs are inadequate for the task as well. There is a solution. You can use secure, real-time middleware to make outbound connections from the plant to the DMZ, and then from the DMZ to the IT department or cloud. Data gets pushed to the DMZ, and then passed along to its proper destination, all in real time. It is even possible to send control commands from IT back to OT. Find out more in our free webinar: Secure Networking:OT to IT and the Cloud.

Eliminating the risk of contamination in pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturing with Class Zero oil-free compressors Stewart Craig, Product Manager at MultiAir UK & Ireland, which supplies Worthington Creyssensac machines via a network of approved Oil-Free distributor partners, commented: “With pharmaceutical and chemical manufacturers facing increased energy costs and striving to achieve sustainable production, oil-free technology offers a significant advancement in more environmentally-friendly compressors. It not only helps to avoid risk to products and brand reputation, but also adds financial value through a lower total cost of ownership.
Industrial compressed air brand, Worthington Creyssensac, has launched the new ‘Class Zero’ oil-free compressors for the UK & Ireland markets. Certified* to be 100% free of any traces of oil or other contaminants, the new OF 20-75V range has been designed for use in pharmaceutical, biotechnology and chemical sectors, where production of air quality to the ISO 8573.1:2010 class is essential to maintain high standards of manufacturing.
“Worthington Creyssensac engineers are committed to improving safety and efficiency in these sectors. Our new OF 2075V compressors are supplied with our Airlogic² Touch controller with integrated ICONS smart monitoring and control system. This maximises compressor reliability and performance, helping to schedule optimum service windows, predict any risk of failure and measure overall machine health.”
W
ith no lubrication in the compression cycle, this new generation of compressors replaces previous oil-injected machines, that rely on downstream filtration to achieve the required high levels of air purity. As well as further enhancing product safety, oil-free technology enables pharmaceutical and chemical producers to save time and money by dispensing with monitoring, cleaning, and maintenance of oil filters, the removal of which will help to achieve lower operating costs. With climbing production energy costs in mind, Worthington Creyssensac implemented variable speed drive (VSD) compressors in its new oil-free models to help offset the rising costs. A VSD compressor matches the power consumption to the air demand, especially when the production process is not constant, varying its speed and thus reducing the energy consumption during low usage periods to maintain outlet pressure to +/-0.1 Bar. By selecting a VSD compressor, the manufacturers can meet their fluctuating air demand profile, reducing overall energy consumption by as much as 35%.

NEW ifm TEMPERATURE SENSOR CHECKS ITSELF For processes where accurate temperature control is essential and deviations could have costly implications, the new TCC self-checking temperature sensor from ifm electronic provides an invaluable added level of assurance. The sensor continually monitors its own performance and, if an internal failure occurs or excessive drift is detected in measurement accuracy, it gives a visual warning and sends an alert message to the plant control system so that immediate action can then be taken to minimise the impact of the problem.
T
he TCC temperature sensor maintains an accuracy of ± 0.2 K across its whole measuring range of -25 to +160 degrees C and offers exceptional measuring stability between calibrations. It also uses IO-Link technology to ensure that the measured results are delivered accurately to the control system, even with long connecting leads and in noisy electrical environments. These features, together with the self-checking functionality, make the new sensor an excellent choice for use in even the most demanding and critical applications. The TCC sensor has a translucent end cap that is illuminated green in normal operation. The sensor continually checks its own performance against an
58|
internal reference, and if deviation outside a pre-set tolerance range (which can be adjusted from 0.5 to 3 K) is detected, the end cap illumination changes to red, giving the user an instant and highly visible warning of the malfunction. Simultaneously, an alert signal is issued via the IO-Link connection. The same actions occur if the sensor detects a serious internal malfunction. TCC self-checking temperature sensors from ifm electronic have stainless steel bodies and an IP69K ingress protection rating. They can be used at pressures up to 160 bar, and are available in versions with installation depths from 30 to 550 mm.

rowing digitalization, shorter development cycles, increasing customer requirements and a shortage of skilled workers – the world of automation is changing at breakneck speed. Murrelektronik has the answer to all these requirements. Presenting Vario-X - a modular, highly flexible automation platform that allows all automation functions to be implemented completely decentrally (i.e. without a control cabinet) for the first time. Vario-X brings sensors and actuators directly into the control

environment and ensures reliable voltage, signal, data management and the seamless integration of decentralized servo drives. At the heart of Vario-X are robust, IP65 rated waterproof and dustproof modules, which include power supplies, controls, disconnect switches, safety technology and I/O connections. They can be easily assembled side by side on a rugged backplane with integrated mechanical mounting profiles. Once assembled, the Vario-X solution can be easily attached to all common mounting systems without
further protection and, in extreme cases, is rugged enough to be stepped on without damage. Equipped with a multicore CPU, Vario-X can meet all control requirements and be easily integrated into all higher-level Industrial Ethernet networks as an open control platform.

March 2022 who can finally operate in a noticeably quieter work environment and, by reducing energy use to help our planet.
Digital twin for planning, installation, operation and service Vario-X is not only a collection of backplanes, modules, cables and I/O. A system automated with Vario-X has a digital twin right from the start: a portable 1:1 image of the virtual system that contains all the functions and parameters of the physical system – even in the design phase, before even the first mechanical component has been ordered or assembled. For this purpose, Murrelektronik creates a kinematic of machines and systems in a unique software, where movements and processes can be simulated. With the digital twin, the same virtual kinematic is then run to control the real machine. The digital system can also be “placed” directly into the manufacturing process with augmented reality (AR) on a mobile phone or tablet, so that all movement sequences and functions can be viewed virtually while assembling the machine or in production.
wiring errors and reducing assembly time. This also eliminates expensive and time-consuming installation work in the control cabinet like populating components, stripping and landing wires, labeling and grounding individual components. To extend the modular concept for your machine control, additional stations can easily be distributed around the machine and connected to each other, like adding an additional power supply to support localized servo motors. Likewise, remote IO modules can be connected directly to Vario-X to process and control sensors and actuators without a backplane or cabinet I/O. This limits control hardware variants and vastly streamlines the cable architecture. “Vario-X offers 100% decentralized, cabinet-free automation,” says Olaf Prein, Head of Global Business Unit Automation at Murrelektronik. “Our automation platform ensures modular and transparent processes, higher added value in all areas of
your company and consequently more competitiveness and profitability in machine and plant engineering. Thanks to the integrated installation concept alone, Vario-X shortens a machine installation by around 40%.”
Turning off the air in production Vario-X is driving forward the electrification of manufacturing processes and offers a much more efficient alternative to pneumatics. With an efficiency of only ten to twenty percent, far too much energy is wasted by using compressed air as an energy source due to countless leaks in the system and inefficient actuators. Replacing pneumatics with electrics – swapping an air cylinder with a servo motor – brings advantages to all those involved: the engineer who can reduce the inefficient, low resolution and relatively expensive pneumatics in his machine, the production planner who can focus on one physical energy source – electricity, the employees
“All this reduces the assembly and commissioning time many times over, because many problems that are discovered during assembly do not even occur,” Prein summarizes the advantages of the digital twin. In addition, assemblers can use the digital twin as a ‘3D blueprint’, for example via augmented reality app or virtual reality glasses. This often works much faster than understanding a plan drawn in 2D. “With Vario-X, we are providing the answer to the pressing questions and challenges of production, plant and installation planning in automation technology,” concludes Prein. “Vario-X helps to avoid ‘silo-driven’ planning and to break up static planning processes. In addition to the agile development processes, this consistent focus on customer needs has made a decisive contribution to the development of Vario-X.”

Linear Motors Slash Energy Costs to 5% of Pneumatic Solutions Powering actuators directly with Linear electric motors rather than air cylinders can result in huge cost and emission savings across the board. So much of our industry uses compressed air that is often regarded as the fourth utility, after electricity, natural gas and water. However, compressed air is more expensive than the other three utilities when evaluated on a per unit energy delivered basis.
Quin Systems, exclusive UK suppliers of LinMot Linear Motors for over 25 years, can help you calculate the predicted carbon and energy savings achieved by switching from a pneumatic solution to a linear motion solution. LinMot, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of industrial linear motors has released a new component of its LinMot Designer software that can quantify just how energy efficient its solution is, and the sizeable return on investment their motors can provide over pneumatics.

Example Take an example within the handling and assembling sector. Linear actuation is required on the horizontal plane to move items through to the next stage of the production process. A single LinMot Linear motor with guide can replace a traditional 63mm diameter rodless air cylinder for this task, ultimately reducing annual energy cost by over 10,000 EUR and CO2 emissions by over 26,000 kg.
This improves the cost benefits and environmental efficiency of your production line by a significant margin.
68|
The return on investment is significant. Energy saved by using a single electrically driven actuator over a basic traditional pneumatic cylinder has the potential to cover its higher initial outlay within a very short timeframe, typically less than a year. Combined with the extraordinarily long operation life of LinMot Linear Motors and the next to zero servicing requirements mean LinMot’s solution will continue working for years.
