Pacific Heights House by Jensen Architects A compact street presence belies expansive living spaces in this urban house. Urban dwellings can feel highly compartmentalized, composed of segregated levels. A recently completed four-story home, at the crest of San Francisco’s affluent Pacific Heights neighborhood, is surprisingly expansive. Designed by Jensen Architects, the house is a series of glazed volumes with complementary outdoor spaces. “The clients were interested in a radical level of openness,” says Frank Merritt, a principal at Jensen. The property’s original house was designed in 1941 by architect Gardner Dailey, an early Bay Area modernist. Over the years, its identity had been compromised by renovations, but it retained its unusual layout. Designed for a closer view of the Bay, the back of the house was nearly at the property line; instead of a backyard, it had a courtyard between the main structure and the garage. The architects’ design is essentially a new building inspired by the original layout. They excavated below the steeply sloping grade to create guest quarters, expanded the main house, and added a small penthouse level. A glass-walled hallway separates the new gravel courtyard from a jetted lap pool: an urban version of a suburban backyard. On the third level, the open living/dining/kitchen area flows onto a large deck that continues past the courtyard to the front edge of the house. At the top, the pavilionlike penthouse has glass sliding doors on three sides for enjoying the view. While the 5,800-squarefoot house is considerably larger than the original, it is still well under the maximum allowed because of its emphasis on outdoor space. The main level is visually connected to the level below: from above, there’s a clear sight line all the way through the courtyard to the entrance. With so much transparency, solar gain and privacy are an issue. The architects installed translucent mechanical pocketed shades in front of every glass wall, and added a second layer for the street-facing spaces. The kitchen is shaded by the cantilevered penthouse, and the penthouse itself has external fins that offer a clear view straight on but obscure side views. The extruded-aluminum louvers have an airfoil-shaped profile that is 8 inches deep and 1 inch wide. “As much as we architects like big expanses of glass, there’s the psychology of space—we needed to mitigate that feeling of living in a glass box,” says Merritt.

SketchUp 2016 has arrived!

SketchUp 2016 has recently launched and with this release we’re integrating Trimble Connect directly into SketchUp.

When you reference a file from any of these services (.skp or otherwise), LayOut will notify you when an update is available for your ‘web reference.’

As a refresher, Connect is Trimble’s platform for storing, syncing, referencing, sharing, and collaborating on design/build projects. Sign up for a free account, then start uploading .skp, .pdf, .dxf, .ifc. files. With this integration, we’re packaging the current Trimble Connect Extension into the installer.

Say goodbye to missing references when different people are working on the same .layout document within a cloud sync folder that also contains the referenced files.

The TC integration is accessible from the File menu, and will allow users to upload, pull down, and update SKP’s from Trimble Connect project folders. As you’re modelling you can even pull in and update reference SketchUp models as if they were locally hosted components. Learn more about Trimble Connect... In SketchUp 2016, a context click on a component gives you the opportunity to reload (or swap out) a new component directly from 3D Warehouse. This action will reload every instance of that component in your model (similar to the same action in the Components Browser), so it’s a helpful method for working with proxy models. And if your component was downloaded from 3D Warehouse, you can also use the context-click to quickly access its 3DWH details page. With this release, LayOut’s reference objects are now web friendly. That means your LayOut projects can reference and update files that are stored and synced with services like Dropbox, Google Drive, and Trimble Connect Sync.

08

We’re proud to announce our first step towards an extension ecosystem for LayOut. Using this new API, developers can now create and customize .layout files from SketchUp models. Practically, this means that other applications can import or export the *.layout file format using the C API. (This includes creating a .layout file from SketchUp.). We have several sample scripts for developers to try out at release, along with a blog post where they can learn more. Learning and utilising SketchUp’s inference engine makes for fast and precise modelling. In this release, we’ve oiled that engine to provide slicker inferencing and locking across the board. This improvement is actually an entire set of smart tweaks we’ve made to inferencing and locking. You can download SketchUp Pro 2016 for free on a 30 day trial. After this time, the software will revert to SketchUp Make. Elmtec is the distribution partner for SketchUp in the UK. Europe’s Largest Cross Structure Complete Moholt 50|50, Trondheim’s latest student accommodation, is set to become Europe’s largest cross laminated timber structure and a welcome addition to the city. With construction now drawing to a close, this new student village is expected to reach completion in December 2016. The sleek and stylish development has a sustainable Kebony façade and will comprise five blocks housing up to 632 students at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology. The vision for this student village is not only to provide simple and affordable housing, but also to make everyday life easier for students to allow greater focus on their studies. With a strong environmental and community focus, Moholt 50|50 is intended to be a valuable addition to the area which will benefit the local community, rather than being simply an extension of the university’s existing accommodation. This project aims to demonstrate that good architecture can create a sense of place and of belonging, irrespective of such a high turnover in tenants. The main structure of the accommodation is built using cross laminated timber, a relatively new product which is increasingly popular within the building industry. Trondheim will also benefit from large inward investment initiated by this development, with the construction of a new 1000m2 parking facility, activity and fitness centre, library, medical centre, hairdresser, supermarket and clothes shop. Moholt 50|50 will create new jobs for the local community, while developing much needed facilities, such as a kindergarten for 171 children whose parents study at the university. Throughout the development process there has been a significant emphasis on promoting environmental construction. As a result, MDH Arkitekter chose to use Kebony wood as the main building material for the façade, offering a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwood, cement and brick. Norway has a long tradition of building with wood and Kebony’s environmental attributes perfectly complement this sustainable design. The patented Kebony technology treats sustainable softwood with furfuryl alcohol, an agricultural byproduct, to polymerise the cell wall which gives the final product greatly improved durability and dimensional stability. The resulting timber is a high performing, beautiful wood product. A recent

Laminated Timber With Kebony Cladding study by environmental consulting firm Bergfald & Co. demonstrated that Kebony has a substantially lower carbon footprint than its tropical hardwood equivalents, between 15 and 30 times lower, inclusive of treatment and transportation to Northern Europe, thus certifying that Kebony was the perfect choice for Moholt 50|50. Dagfinn Sagen, MDH Arkitekter commented: “This is an incredibly ambitious project, and once completed it will be the largest cross laminated timber (CLT) construction project in Europe. We chose Kebony for the build as it requires no treatment throughout its whole life cycle, and

is the perfect choice when you need a cladding material that is maintenance free. Over time, it also naturally develops an attractive silver grey patina, an aesthetic that we believe really works for this project.” Mette Valen, sales manager at Kebony added: “The project team working on Moholt 50|50 have done an incredible job, creating a large and striking building in the midst of a built up residential area. We were really pleased to see that they placed such importance on environmental values, and we hope that the size of the build will show others that even large scale projects can place sustainability as a key focus.”

The Future Trends in Housing Identified By Reynaers at Home Architect Survey Industry professionals have shared their predictions for the future of residential architecture in a national survey from Reynaers at Home. The majority of respondents said that sustainability was high on the agenda for the houses of tomorrow. Looking at the current industry, architects agreed that energy efficiency is still a critical consideration when designing a project, with 48% of respondents citing it as the most popular trend. When asked “What does the future hold for housing design?” almost half said more affordable homes for the younger population. More than one in 10 also said that tech-based solutions for smaller spaces will be a prominent future trend. Architects predicted that there will be more properties built to meet energy demands and budgets for all ages, with a focus on flexibility and functionality supported by innovative design and quality. One architect said: “The future in housing design needs more affordable housing for all ages, but there’s not the political will to make this happen. Too many people are heavily invested in the inflated housing market.” Maximising space and light were mentioned as key trends for the future, as well as amenities and space planning, cost-effective repetitive grid facades and floating corners with bifold or sliding doors below. Compared with Reynaers at Home’s 2013 survey, there was a 12% collective increase in popularity for panoramic window walls, bifold doors and floating ceiling corners. A clear effort is emerging to streamline residential architecture into a landscape of sustainable, affordable and efficient homes which maximise space, light and energy usage. Rebecca Cope, Marketing Manager at Reynaers, said: “It’s fantastic to see that as an industry we are looking towards the future. Architects care about the people using their buildings, as well as the world around them. “Architecture is about creating something that provides an excellent functional space for those

who live there, and one that will stand the test of time. This sits in line with Reynaers at Home’s key values, as our product range of aluminium doors and windows boasts fantastic sustainability credentials. “Reynaers’ products can contribute to the overall sustainability level of the building, thus achieving points for building certificates such as LEED and BREEAM. These certify that a building is designed and built to surpass national standards for a range of factors including energy savings, CO2 emission reductions and sensitivity to their impact. “The range also offers good value due to its long term high performance and energy efficiency levels, reducing residents’ energy bills and the need for maintenance or replacement.” Of the architects surveyed, 41% of respondents designed for the domestic market and 38% designed for commercial and domestic. The majority of respondents focused on a mix of new builds and extensions/refurbs. Greenwich development features sustainable systems from Reynaers Nestled in a busy London district, Greenwich Square is an awardwinning, striking regeneration scheme at the old site of Greenwich District Hospital. More than 600 new homes are going to be created as part of London’s first major carbon neutral development. The design echoes traditional street patterns, with a variety of amenities surrounding a relaxed public square. Curved, swooping façades work together with undulating islands of woodland landscaping and meandering paths in harmony with a variety of contemporary, high specification housing. The south east London project has utilised multiple Reynaers systems, including CS 86-HI, CS 77, CW 50 and Vision 50. These aluminium windows and doors are well-insulated to control heat and air permeability, thereby reducing costs for residents. Used throughout the £215m development, Reynaers’ CS 86-HI and CS 77 include robust flush door and window systems, which meet the highest requirements with regard to safety, thermal insulation and stability.

18

With unlimited design freedom and maximum transparency, CW 50 is a curtain wall façade and roof system that has been used as part of the buildings in the public square. Vision 50, used in the retail elements of the development, is a non-insulated flush door system designed for ground-floor and shop front constructions. Hugh Moss, Head of Marketing at Reynaers Aluminium, said: “This is yet another impressive project which showcases the design freedom, sustainability credentials and functionality of our aluminium systems. “This fantastic development maximises glass and aluminium structures by contrasting them against light, space and greenery. Sustainability has been integral to the design of Greenwich Square and we are proud that our systems have been chosen, thanks to our excellent credentials.”

Greenwich Square was designed by Make Architects, fabricated by Fleetwood Architectural Aluminium Ltd and contracted by Mace Plc. In 2014 the scheme won Best Residential Development at The Wharf Awards. The build has now started, using sustainable materials and techniques, including the incorporation of on-site energy technology. Greenwich Square will be complete in 2017. The aim is to deliver a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rated development and to meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 standards. Nebula “HPWM” is an innovative, best value, fire protection solution designed to allow open plan layouts to comply with current UK building regulations (BS 8458:2015). Building and housing regulations have traditionally encouraged the creation of fire resistant compartments in homes as to limit the spread of fire, an approach that consumers find increasingly frustrating as they seek open, light spaces to live in. Today however, LACoRS guide, approved Document B, British Standard_8458 and the Scottish Building Regulations all recognise the need for flexibility of layout and all allow open-plan designs as long as some additional features, including fire suppression, are provided. For architects and developers, Nebula “HPWM” allows the modern, open-plan layouts that clients increasingly expect to comply with Building Regulations. For landlords, Nebula “HPWM” can create a safe escape route in an existing open plan house or flat with no impact on rentable space.

Fermacell Partitioning is “Positively” Perfect for Research Complex Dry-lining panels by Fermacell feature throughout the new IGMM complex building in Edinburgh. Gypsum fibreboard partitioning by specialist building panel manufacturer Fermacell was specified for a redeveloped research facility for a quadruplet of reasons at least, its fire and acoustic properties, robustness and weight bearing capabilities to name just a few. Some 5,000m2 of 12mm squareedged fermacell was used throughout the University of Edinburgh’s £11 million development of the Institute for Genetics and Molecular Medicine (IGMM) at the city’s Western General Hospital.

20

It was specified by the city’s Oberlanders Architects LLP for the five-storey building which links three existing buildings in the complex – the Medical Research Council’s Human Genetics Unit, the Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine, and the Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre - to form a worldclass research facility. Frequent Fermacell specifiers, Oberlanders’ brief was to repurpose existing laboratories to enable expansion of IGMM research programmes. The project included dry-lab computational research

space linked by a spiral stair within a dramatic south-facing, double-height space, dedicated lecture facilities (including a 180-person lecture theatre) and a social hub and café. The Western General Hospital campus in which the IGMM complex is located is an amalgamation of medical buildings built in the hospital grounds over the past 140 years, beginning with St Cuthbert’s Poorhouse which opened in 1868 and subsequently renamed a “hospital”. In contemporary contrast, the new IGMM building uses a steel frame

October 2016

allowing large clear spans internally. The main façade is essentially single aspect and has glass curtain walling to maximise natural daylight and create an appealing working environment. Brick is used extensively to provide solid book ends to the curtain walling. A spacious roof terrace with overhanging canopy is provided at top floor level, affording stunning views of the Edinburgh skyline. There were many landmark stages for the build in a live research/ hospital environment with complex existing services to contend with. Oberlanders senior architect Rob Bunworth said: “Certainly the ability of the contractor to get the build wind- and water-tight against the sometimes harsh Scottish climate was a milestone, allowing the fermacell internal walling systems to progress apace.” The fermacell panels were installed by specialist sub-contractors ORR Fire Protection and Alexander Gatey for phase one main contractor BAM Construction and construction, refurbishment and maintenance contractor Clark Contracts.

Rob Bunworth added: “The building has been an unqualified success. Key to this is delivering connectivity to the previously separate institutes as well as delivering on the client’s aspirations for bright, well-lit and appealing working environments. The building also delivers on the client briefing requirements by offering many informal study and breakout environments to help foster interdisciplinary crossover and synergy. “Our previous positive experience with fermacell on several education projects in the UK led us to use the range of partition products again due to its robustness and fire/ acoustic properties. An additional benefit is fermacell’s weight bearing capacity without the requirement for additional lining or support, thus providing flexibility in locating shelving, fixtures and equipment internally during the fit-out phase of the project. “The project uses fermacell partition and independent wall lining systems extensively – all internal walls are fermacell. The large spans of fermacell partition systems are

particularly visible to the large 17m-high central atrium linking the reception and foyer to the upper circulation areas. “The fermacell systems as utilised in the build allowed Oberlanders the flexibility to specify many different variations on partition types dealing with myriad fire and acoustic issues. Its robustness and severe duty rating, in addition to its loadbearing capacity, allowed for flexibility in our design response across the project.” He emphasised: “The internal wall components have stood up well alongside the other finishes on the project. Fermacell was able to achieve the height, performance criteria (fire and acoustic), surface finish and robustness characteristics to several demanding environments within the project. 10mm deflection joints required for movement within the fermacell partition system have been specifically set out to provide a coordinated and ultimately pleasing grid pattern within the highly-visible four-storey atrium space located at the heart of the building.”

MSite Launches Futuristic Fingerprint Reader The construction site entry experience is transformed by MSite. A next-generation fingerprint reader which transforms the site entry experience for construction workers has been launched by MSite*, the UK’s leading developer of access control and workforce management solutions. Whereas most fingerprint readers on contemporary construction sites have only a red/green (stop/ go) function and often play up due to dirty hands, the MSite fingerprint touch screen system from HRS combines a rugged, all-weather fingerprint sensor with an intuitive, interactive touch screen to revolutionise the access algorithm. Designed specifically for the foibles and harsh environments of the construction industry, identification speed takes under a second while the MSite fingerprint touch system can match up to 10,000 fingerprint templates. It can even be reconfigured via the MSite website to ask users if they are arriving or leaving before they complete the transaction.

The latest option to the marketleading MSite portfolio, the touch screen system supports access control and time and attendance modes and accepts input from the user to confirm they have understood safety messages before proceeding onto the site – highly beneficial for Health and Safety directors to ensure they get the latest procedural messages across to the workers on the ground. It even gives users feedback about why they may have been denied access, such as an expired accreditation. Available in multiple languages to cater for the construction industry’s diverse workforce as well as wall-mounted and desktopfree; and wireless, cable connected or via 3G/4G, the system can be loaded with a main contractor’s bespoke questions. It can also be configured to allow certain users to enter a PIN code for access, instead of presenting a finger. Built to operate in temperatures ranging from -20˚C to 40˚C, the 12-volt system outputs Wiegand

data for integration with standard access control systems. MSite’s head of product design Simon Appleton said: “The MSite touch screen represents a huge leap forward in the technology required to make fingerprint reading in the construction industry a quick and accurate event. The touch screen element also adds a whole new dimension of interactivity between individuals arriving and leaving site and the management team.

“Add to this biometric advancement the access control and workforce management functions of the original MSite system and you have a system which outperforms anything else on the market.” For more information: www.hrsid.com/product-msite or call 0333 456 2001

nformation on why gypsum fibreboard should be the material of choice for internal and external walls, and floors and ceilings, is contained within a CPD from specialist building board manufacturer Fermacell. The “Modern construction needs modern materials” CPD explains how fermacell is made, how it conforms to relevant standards, where it can typically be used, what product options are available, and its performance characteristics and installation process. Currently celebrating its 45th year of production, the unique fibrereinforced gypsum-based board offers the performance properties of solid blockwork when used in partitioning due to its strength, density and resilience. This makes

Fermacell’s CPD tells specifiers all they need to know about gypsum fibreboards.

Fermacell CPD Promotes Modern Materials For Modern Construction it ideal for ceilings and dry-screed flooring as well as partitions as it also offers high performance in areas such as acoustics and impact and fire resistance. The CPD explains how and where fermacell is made (four factories throughout Europe) and how its manufacture is environmentally friendly, the panels being comprised of 90% recycled material, fully recyclable themselves and accredited by Robust Details and the BBA and ETA. Product options include a variety of standard and custom sizes, four thicknesses and square or tapered edges, all of which comply with Parts E and F of the Building Regulations for acoustics (giving up to 55 dB Rw from a single layer system and thereby reducing costs and partitions width) and fire respectively, BB93 for schools, HTM08 for healthcare and CE Marking (ETA).

24

The CPD also advises where fermacell can be used – in drylining applications where highperformance is required in one or more areas such as acoustics and resistance to impact (a single layer achieving severe duty rating BS 5234: Part 2), fire (A2/Class 0) and moisture (up to 80% humidity resistance). In addition, fermacell has also been tested to CWCT standards for use externally as a backer board in a ventilated rainscreen application and is an ideal racking board in timber frame construction, being stronger than OSB and offering fire protection. This strength (up to 50kg load) can eliminate the requirement for plywood pattressing, saving time on installation and money on materials. Whether used internally or externally, fermacell boards are low maintenance, with minor dents

easily touched up and part-panels easily replaced. In addition, the lack of angle beads on external corners makes them particularly suitable for schools, hospitals, airports, student accommodation, sports halls and other high-traffic areas. They do not even require finishing to accept paint, tiles or wallpaper, although a fermacell skim-like FST (Fine Surface Treatment) is available which does not require a plasterer to apply and dries in 45 minutes. The CPD also includes FAQs and independent cost comparisons which show that taking into account multiple board layers, pattressing and skimming, fermacell is a very cost-effective alternative to performance plasterboard. It is available on request from 0121 311 3480 or joanne.banks@xella.com.

Kawneer helps deliver a pioneering healthcare prognosis Glazing systems by Kawneer feature on the new Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. Architectural glazing from leading aluminium systems supplier Kawneer features on a multi award-winning building which sets a blueprint for next-generation healthcare. Two types of Kawneer’s curtain walling – AA®201 unitised (or modular) and AA®110 traditional (or “stick”) system – were used alongside AA®541 SSG (Structurally Silicone Glazed) integrated window vents and AA®720 and series 190 heavy-duty entrance doors on the £167 million Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool. The new hospital is ground breaking in multiple ways, from being the greenest hospital in the UK (it is BREEAM “Excellent” rated), through the first in Europe to be built in a park, to the first “cognitive” hospital, harnessing the power of “big data” with the latest in computer technology. It was officially opened on June 22nd by Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, some nine months after the 63,000m2 precast concrete building with undulating wildflower meadow green roof and load-bearing façade was handed over following a construction programme of just over two years. Kawneer’s AA®201 unitised curtain walling was specified especially to help with this aspect of the greenfield project as typically it can be installed in a fraction of the time of traditional or stick curtain walling. The AA®110 stick system was used to flood with daylight the atrium concourse which forms the hospital’s public hub while the AA®201 unitised system performs the same function for the sides of three open fingers radiating outwards which alternate with gardens, intertwining building

28

and landscape. Both curtain walling systems have nominal sightlines of 65mm and at Alder Hey incorporate red and blue coloured infill panels. The brief to architects BDP was for a hospital that engenders well-being and raises patients’ and visitors’ spirits by adding to their quality of life, integrating the hospital and park for the therapeutic benefit of children, their families and staff. The result is a unique concept, recasting Alder Hey as the Children’s Health Park and creating a hospital without precedent, utilising the latest thinking on infection control, patient dignity and privacy, segregation of patient, clinical and facilities management flows, and technological advances. Rising out of the park with its undulating profile, it makes it an instantly recognisable and a striking and iconic gateway to Liverpool, comprising 270 beds, including 48 critical care beds for patients in intensive care, high dependency and burns, together with 16 digitallyenhanced operating theatres. BDP project director Ged Couser said: “It was quite a challenge but I think we have delivered a world-class building. The trust claims it is the greenest hospital in the country, generating 60% of its energy on site through the use of photovoltaics, CHP [Combined Heat and Power) and closed loop ground-source heat pumps. “The main contractor Laing O’ Rourke was keen to have as much unitised glazing as possible to make the programme work but because of the geometry of the build it wasn’t possible to install unitised curtain walling everywhere so we had a mix of that and stick curtain walling.

“We also had a requirement for the sightlines to be as slim as possible and for there to be no difference between the stick and the unitised systems and that is what we achieved with the Kawneer systems and aluminium’s sustainability certainly contributed towards the BREEAM rating.” Delivered by Kawneer’s special projects team, Alder Hey has already won three awards – RICS North West Building of the Year, RIBA North West Building of the Year and a 2016 RIBA National Award. The RIBA judges said: “The client and architect have created something special here. Not only is this a complete contrast to the previous Alder Hey building, which still lurks next door as an institutional reminder of how most of us think of hospitals, it offers a new model for the design of children’s healthcare facilities far and wide. “A hugely complex brief and a short delivery timescale were handled superbly well by the design team with an obviously tenacious and astute client team driving forward at every step. “Despite some compromises, the team had managed to maintain the core strength of vision (the underlying theme was ‘if we’ve seen it before it’s not for us’) and the building provides a humanising yet professional backdrop to the lifechanging dramas that unfold beneath its (undulating) roof every day. The land of remarkable people now have a hospital to match their aspirations and this project demonstrates how architecture can make a difference.” To view a five-minute video on the new Alder Hey, featuring interviews with Ged Couser, the interior designer and a critical care consultant, please go to this youtube page.

Aluprof’s Glass Fins

UK leading systems supplier, Aluprof, have recently supplied a bespoke aluminium glazing solution for the ÂŁ3.3m office redevelopment of 6 East Parade in Leeds. The “Avatar Mullion Featureâ€? principle installed is a newly designed principle that incorporates an external glass structural fin which sits within the SR50-N mullion. The “finâ€?, the first of its kind to be installed in Europe, was designed in a joint venture with Aluprof. Fabricator and installer H-K-L Specialists, designed and sourced the bespoke steel cradles and associated supports to carry the glazed fin. Located in the heart of the city of Leeds, Associated Architects have designed a new facade for the existing concrete structure using a dark red glazed terracotta cladding with full height aluminium windows. Having a contemporary appearance the new facade is carefully designed to blend in between existing office buildings in this sought after conservation area of the city. MB-SR50 from Aluprof is a high performance curtain wall system that can be supplied in various guises, both for vertical and roof applications and to suit a wide

range of project requirements. The MB-SR50N EI Fire Rated System offers the same sight lines but can offer up to EI160 rating for vertical glazing. MB-SR50 is a tried and tested system used across the globe that can easily be modified to offer specifiers bespoke requirements. Lakes Bathrooms launches

ultra-clear PureVue glass without charge Shower enclosure specialist, Lakes Bathrooms, has launched PureVueHD, an optically superior, low-iron glass that appears entirely clear. This new high quality glass is being offered as standard on shower enclosures, doors and bath screens in both its Classic and Coastline Collection, so no incremental charge will be made for this high-end, ultra-clear look. PureVueHD has minimal iron content, meaning that the glass appears clear, rather than having the green tinge that is visible in standard glass. This is because very high transmission levels, of around 90 per cent, enable as much light as possible to pass through PureVueHD glass, making everything viewed through it appear lighter and brighter. With standard glass the iron content reduces light transmission, which creates the green hue that tints everything viewed through it and is particularly noticeable on the edges of the shower enclosure, door or bath screen. According to Lakes Bathrooms, this dramatically clearer glass allows the bathroom’s colour palette to be viewed with untainted accuracy. It likens the difference in colours, sharpness and enhanced clarity that PureVueHD makes in the bathroom to the vivid quality brought to the living room by high definition TV. Whilst low-iron glass can cost as much as 50 per cent more due to the higher grade of silica that it demands, Lakes Bathrooms is supplying it as standard; without adding to its prices. So this visual luxury is now part of all products in its Classic and Coastline collections (excluding only the Mirror range). Enthusing about this innovation, managing director, Robin Craddock, explains “Given how much care goes into the design

and finish in any bathroom, it’s frustrating to see décor tainted by the green shade in standard glass. So we are excited to introduce PureVueHD ultra-clear, low-iron glass, which allows the real beauty of the bathroom to be seen perfectly clearly. We are introducing it as standard and bearing the incremental cost ourselves, to ensure that this clarity and quality is readily available, effortless to choose and essential to specify.” The choice of PureVueHD products includes shower enclosures, shower doors and bath screens, with over 40 styles. The latest walk-in ranges are included, plus heavier thickness glass, which shows even more strongly the contrast between standard ‘green’ and this new ultra-clear glass. Adding to the glass clarity, Lakes Bathrooms continues to treat both sides of its Classic and Coastline products with stay-clean AllClear® coating as standard, it says to maximise the clear PureVueHD advantage. This high performance coating is applied during manufacture and its repellent properties ensure that these products require less cleaning than standard bathrooms surfaces. PureVueHD products start from £145.00 plus VAT and are detailed in the latest catalogue from Lakes Bathrooms. For more information or to find the nearest stockist visit www.lakesbathrooms.co.uk.

West End Wet Rooms Benefit From Elegance of Dallmer Drainage Channels A high specification refurbishment and extension project at a residential property in a desirable area of West London has included installation of linear shower drains selected from the extensive range of Dallmer Limited. The 40-week project on the home in Lansdowne Road was carried out by J&Z Construction Ltd under the supervision of the company’s own architects, with the four storey building being completely gutted and an extra level of accommodation added in the roof-space. Two stylish shower spaces were created: one designed as a wet room while the other featured a two metre high glass wall set into a floor channel, with a rain head over. J&Z Construction’s interior designers chose products from the Dallmer range to ensure water was removed unobtrusively but effectively from the floor. Dallmer supplied two of its Ceraline-W-800 mm floor channels with Ceraline Custom cover plates. In both cases the floor drains, with their adjustable ball joint outlet connection, have a flow capacity of at least 48 litres/minute, were installed along the base of the back wall to the showering area, with the

38

client’s preferred floor finish fitting seamlessly around and into the elegantly engineered channel sections. The height adjustable floor channels feature sound absorbing leveling legs and the drain body has an easily removeable trap. Like the cover plates, they are manufactured from 304 grade stainless steel and they incorporate.a sand-coated flange for the secure bonding of under tile waterproofing membranes. A spokesperson for J&Z Construction commented: “Our company has been established for more than a decade and with our teams of highly trained site teams and architects we endeavour to give the best possible service to our clients in London and the south east.. As well as luxury renovations, extensions and new builds, we specialize in the design and fit out of kitchens and bathrooms. RINNAI GOES SOLO FOR CONTINUOUS FLOW WITH A STORE…. Rinnai’s latest innovation in the energy efficient fast delivery of instantly useable hot water is the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater.

T

he Rinnai Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX water heater is the first of its kind for the UK to combine the advanced technology of wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder, all in one compact footprint. The design parameters of this product empowers specifiers, designers, installers and engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications it was once not previously possible. For instance, the Infinity Solo will have both 35kW and 54kW sized appliances, ensuring sites with a smaller gas meter can readily use this technology. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market. The cylinder is stainless steel and this reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, and it makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), so the user pays

44

less to maintain the heat within the tank. One other benefit of the Infinity Solo using a stainless steel cylinder is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time. The Infinity Solo range is also renewables compatible and supplied pre-fitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source will always be from renewable gains and the complementary Rinnai water heater will only apply the precise amount of gas to boost the difference in temperature. Rinnai manufactures the energy efficient Infinity range of gas fired continuous flow water heaters and space heaters. The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters on the market today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation. For more information on the RINNAI product range visit www.rinnaiuk.com

Air Leakage is the Biggest Single Waste of Energy for Most UK Buildings Modern, low energy buildings, be it, Passive Houses, German Low Energy Buildings, Canadian Super E or any other energy efficient construction, individually and collectively place Airtightness as a primary part of achieving a low energy building. It is really about time that the UK construction industry followed the lead of these innovative methods of low energy construction, and built homes that use significantly reduced amounts of energy. In the past it was very clear that a lot of heat loss through the fabric of the building envelope was as a result of low levels or no insulation and a very low level of draught sealing. Priority in our building regulations is placed on achieving lower, and lower U-values for each elemental area of the building fabric. This inevitably leads to lower levels of heat loss as a result of an increase of the insulation. However, the proportion of heat loss as a result of uncontrolled air leakage through the external envelope of the building has yet to be seriously addressed. Air leakage allows expensive heated air to escape from our homes and buildings.

48

The most cost effective means of reducing our heating bills and increasing energy efficiency in our

homes is to decrease to level of uncontrolled ventilation in the living space, in other words improved airtightness. Airtightness lends itself to a comfortable healthy internal atmosphere within the living space and ensures that the building fabric can breathe and is maintained in a healthy condition. This is especially achievable with the Pro Clima Airtight System which utilises a ‘world first’ intelligent membrane, Intello Plus, that manages the inherent moisture out of the structure of the building, even after the building is complete. A lack of airtightness dramatically increases the risk of mould growth and structural degradation, particularly in light weight construction, leading to costly structural repairs, necessitated by the development of mould, rot, damp and condensation. This is as a result of the warm moisture laden heated air in the living space, penetrating and rapidly condensing within structural elements.

Levels of Airtightness can be achieved by sealing the building envelope by using Vapour Barriers, Vapour Checks, wood based panels (e.g. OSB and plywood)’ or by plastering, porous concrete block work. These methods of achieving Airtightness have their limitations and do not have built-in Structural Protection or Moisture Management abilities, especially if the structure has a high vapour resistance on the exterior side of the construction Intello Plus is a BBA certified membrane that provides an intelligent vapour check which is humidity variable and vapour permeable so providing a complete solution to potential problems associated with the requirement for airtightness. London’s Iconic Lighthouse Building

From mysterious past to bright future Once a building at risk and on the Historic England’s register deemed unsafe for use, the Grade II Listed Lighthouse building has been transformed into quieter and warmer office and retail space with the help of Selectaglaze.

O

pposite Kings Cross, stands the iconic Flat-Iron Lighthouse building. No one knows for certain when it was built, but some think it was somewhere between 1875 – 1884. What the building was used for is also unknown. Some guess it once sold oysters, others say the Lighthouse may have been used to spot fires or a camera obscura; it still remains a mystery today. Neglected for over 20 years, UK Real Estate took on the enormous task of revitalising the building for its new life as office and retail space and appointed Balfour Beatty as its main contractor. The project wasn’t without its challenges, with two underground tunnels running beneath; the building’s restoration had to be carefully managed, including tackling the issues of noise and vibrations. The answer to the extensive vibration issues was to isolate all internal fixtures and fittings by inserting elastomeric bearing pads at all points of contact with the external structure. Secondary glazing was an intrinsic component of this solution as a fully independent internal window system, it allows the full sealing of the internal envelope.

sightlines of the primary window. In total Selectaglaze installed 83 units.

Selectaglaze is the specialist in the design, manufacture and installation of secondary glazing, with fifty years’ experience working on all building types. Selectaglaze recommended the use of 8mm toughened glass, glazed to Series 25 and Series 90 vertical sliders and Series 41 lift out units, designed to suit the style and

When there is a cavity of at least 100mm between the primary and secondary glazing a reduction of 45dB is achievable. An additional benefit of secondary glazing is thermal retention, with the use of high performance twin seals, it virtually eliminates drafts and a U-value of 1.8 is possible.

As all of Selectaglaze units are a fully reversible adaptation and are accepted for use on Listed buildings by most heritage bodies. For further information, literature or test results please contact Selectaglaze on 01727 837271/e mail: enquiries@selectaglaze.co.uk or visit: www.selectaglaze.co.uk

PUTTING A ROOF OVER THEIR HEADS Thousands of students will have a quality roof over the heads over the next few decades…

N

ewry Construction Ltd has acquired a number of projects in Liverpool, with four already on site to deliver quality student and key worker apartments with retail outlets below within the next three years.

Newry instructed Garry Astill Roofing to form the roofs on all the buildings: over 8000m2 of Protan SE1.6mm and Protan G green roof membrane will be used to deliver the roofing elements across the sites. “We have a long-standing relationship with Newry’s management team, and with Protan UK. Newry knows that it can rely on us to install a quality roof that will deliver value and performance, and consistently come in on budget,” says Garry Astill. Protan SE single ply membrane, available in 1.2mm, 1.6mm and 1.8mm, is certified to deliver, and potentially surpass, the energy efficiency requirements laid down in Approved Document L, and, under the Green Guide, achieve a A+ rating. Hot-air welded at joints and mechanically fixed to the roof, the membrane achieves durability in excess of 30 years, with air leakage controlled/minimised in line with latest Building Regulations.

Protan G membrane is a glass fibre reinforced, microbe durable PVC membrane for gravel ballasted roofs, inverted roofs, and green roofs. Protan G membrane can withstand high and low temperatures and attack by micro-organisms. Loose-laid, it provides a fast and safe means of creating an FLL compliant roof. All Protan membranes are fully BBA certified. Established some 75 years ago, and still privately-owned, Protan is one of the top 3 membrane manufacturers in Europe. Protan, a member of SPRA, offers a full support service, from a RIBA-certified CPD programme, NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice and variable warranty depending on specification is provided from the company’s UK offices and training facilities in Warrington.

Welsh Slate helps students with a new roof over their heads New student accommodation at Newcastle University features 32,000 Welsh Slates. Photograph © Steve Mayes Photography

Some 32,000 Welsh Slates have been used to roof the £13 million development of new student accommodation at Newcastle University.

a pre-fabricated structural framing system. The external finish of the buildings is largely traditional masonry and slate, similar to the buildings they replaced.

The 500mm x 300mm Penrhyn Heather Blues from the Lagan group company were used on Park Terrace, an exciting development situated in a prime location on campus, close to the city centre, in a Conservation area overlooking Newcastle’s Exhibition Park. Accommodation is spread over up to six floors with lift, on-site entry-phone systems and CCTV.

Park Terrace was the first phase, with Kensington Terrace following a year later.

The apartment blocks provide students with en-suite bedrooms in self-catered flats varying in size from six to 11 bedrooms. Each flat has a fully-equipped, contemporary kitchen and comfortable common area with Wi-Fi, flat-screen TV, on-site laundrette and bike storage. Together with the refurbishment of 10 period houses on Kensington Terrace, some 350 en-suite undergraduate bedrooms have been added to the university’s portfolio. The existing buildings on Park Terrace were demolished to make way for two new buildings including a mews block to the rear of the existing terraces. The project, under a novated design and build form of contract, comprises the construction of the building frame using

54

Welsh Slate sales representative Alex Grant said: “The job was specified as second hand Welsh but due to the large amount required it was not possible to source enough material of quite the right quality and so new Welsh Slate was used, some 2,000m2 of it.” The Welsh Slates were installed by M&C Roofing for main contractor Graham Construction and were supplied by Burton Roofing Supplies. Kensington and Park Terrace received Highly Commended status at the Newcastle University Excellent Contractor Awards 2013. The award scheme recognises contractor excellence based on a range of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) assessed by the university. The project was nominated by Barry Cottrill, project engineer at the university, and Luke Gardner, senior project manager.

Marley Eternit Adds Underlays to Create Unparalleled Roof Systems Offer Manufacturer Marley Eternit has launched its own easy-to-install Vapour Permeable and Non Breathable underlays, further enhancing its position as the leading roof systems provider in the UK.

F

ollowing the acquisition of John Brash, the latest announcement means Marley Eternit now offers the most comprehensive roof system in the market, including roof coverings, fittings and accessories, roofing battens and underlays. This allows specifiers, merchants and contractors to benefit from buying a whole roof system from a single source. The new Universal lightweight underlays incorporate a range of useful features to ensure installation is compliant with the latest requirements of BS 5534. As well as being designed for use in all five UK wind zones, the underlays are marked with guide lines for straight laying and to correspond with the different overlap lengths set out by the British Standard, making it easier for contractors to comply. To meet the British Standard, securing underlay can either involve wastage by requiring larger laps to coincide with a naturally occurring batten course or introduce a health and safety risk with the use of a dangerous fly batten. To overcome these challenges, Marley Eternit’s Vapour Permeable and Non Breathable underlays come with integrated tape to seal and secure the laps. This provides an effective and easy-to-install solution capable of resisting problems associated with wind uplift, whilst meeting the British Standard. Gavin White, product manager from Marley Eternit, explains: “Following our integration with John Brash, the launch of our own range of underlays is the final piece of the jigsaw, meaning we are now the only UK manufacturer to offer as many elements of the roof within one system package. This is particularly important given many specifiers are now looking for a total roof solution and it gives advantages in terms of a single point of accountability and technical support, all underpinned by the peace of mind that comes with our system warranty.” The high performance Universal underlays have been manufactured using the latest materials and processes. They have been designed either to integrate as part of a complete Marley Eternit roof system, or for use in conjunction with a range of roof coverings - regardless of manufacturer. Gavin White adds: “Most breathable underlays have a significant role to play when used as part of an integrated ventilation system. Our new Vapour Permeable underlay is a complementary means of ventilation when used in conjunction with traditional low and high level ventilation products. We feel this is the most effective way of meeting the requirements of BS 5250 and is a tried and tested approach which avoids placing the heavy burden of roof ventilation on one single element. We are also launching a Non Breathable underlay for use when traditional ventilation methods are preferred. Both underlays provide an ultra strong, durable and easy-to-install under-tile layer suitable for warm or cold roof applications. “Choosing a full roof system from Marley Eternit gives peace of mind that all elements meet the highest level of quality and sustainability and have been designed and tested to meet stringent standards, with ease of fitting in mind.”

Homeowner’s Guide Roof Refurbishment - How to comply with Building Regulations In October 2010, the latest revision of Part L of the Building Regulations came into force with the objective of implementing the EU’s Energy Performance of Building Directive. The aim was to reduce energy use in buildings. Part L is concerned with the Conservation of Fuel and Power in buildings.

THE KEY REQUIREMENTS: F

The regulations come into effect when 50% or more of the roof area is being refurbished. In simple terms, it means that the whole of that roof must be brought up to the thermal efficiency demanded by the current regulations if it doesn’t meet a minimum threshold standard.

F

A strip and re-roof or even just the provision of a new layer of waterproofing, for example when striping and re-felting a flat roof, will usually necessitate the upgrading of the thermal performance of the roof.

*Remember the so-called “roofer” with a van and a ladder can cost the homeowner dearly if any work carried out is not with the approval of Building Control.*

Construction group SDC saves space, time and money with new SMART OKI Multifunction Printers Customer Background SDC is a construction company group that works across a variety of sectors including research and development, commercial, manufacturing, automotive, healthcare and education. As a result, it often has around 20 to 30 concurrent live projects on the go – each with their own temporary site manager’s office.

The Challenge Building sites can be a tough environment for any printer. It needs to be able to cope with anything, from dust and mud clogging up its insides to rough-handling by a constant stream of users and being moved from site to site. The main challenge is space. SDC had a selection of devices in each of its site offices including A4 mono and A3 colour printers for the many drawings needed for each project, day-to-day office printing and a separate photocopier, all causing space restrictions in an already limited workplace.

Why OKI? The decision was made to standardise all devices so that they originate from a single vendor. Some of SDC’s existing units were OKI printers which had proved robust and reliable, so OKI seemed the obvious choice. The OKI Smart Multifunction Printer (MFP) passed the

test with flying colours and an order for several new Smart MC853dnct MFP’s followed.

Customer Quote “The reason for going for that specific device was to have all the functionality in one place – it can print, scan, fax and photocopy. It is very compact so it just sits in the corner and doesn’t take up any desk space,” says Kit Lock, IT Technician at SDC. “We also wanted a machine that could replicate the finer details on drawings but – at the other end of the spectrum – quickly print out a big Wet Paint sign. We need these quickly because we are working with the public much of the time. They have to be good quality so people can read them,”

“We have been impressed by the quality, speed and overall performance of the OKI smart printers.” Kit Lock, IT Technician - SDC

Find out more about OKI Smart Multifunction Printers at www.oki.co.uk/mc800series

Conclusion “We are expecting to make savings through standardised consumables and a reduction in number of devices” says Lock. “It has made life in the IT department a lot easier as we are not installing machines right, left and centre. All the devices are set up the same, staff can go to any site and print straightaway. Also there’s no scanning software involved because it’s all done through the machine.” OKI MC853dn Multifunction Printer

Snug and Comfortable Winter Fleeces It may be winter outside, but you can still stay fashionably snug and dry when working outside with Dickies’ softshell jackets and micro fleece clothing. Dickies’ two-tone softshell jackets come in a selection of colours and make a perfect outer layer for employee uniforms. The piping detail on the arms and waist areas is reflective to give a level of visibility in low light conditions. The cuffs feature an adjustable strap and internal hem adjusters are also featured allowing you to adapt the garment for maximum comfort. Also, the chest pocket and both side pockets are zip fastening to ensure safe keeping of your belongings. The Dickies’ two-tone microfleeces are part of a growing range of Dickies’ fashionable outerwear and are an ideal outer layer for damp and cold working conditions. These are designed to be a close fit for this reason, so will naturally measure slightly smaller than most Dickies fleece workwear. This work top also features a thumb hole on each cuff to prevent the garment rising up, to ensure further comfort.

New Flame Retardant Coveralls From Dickies are Hot and Coming Soon At last, the superb value Dickies Every Day range will be joined by two much-awaited coveralls: The FR24/7 and the FR24/7TP – probably the best value overalls of their type on the market. Both offer protection against heat and flame, and are specially designed with antistatic fibre to guard against electrostatic discharge. Radio/gas detector loops add another layer of safety checking. They are suitable for use by welders and in offshore environments and chemical plants. The FR24/7TP has Nordic-style reflective tape around the shoulders, arms and legs, which ensures enhanced visibility while offering flame retardant technology, making this a garment that offers safety and security at work.

60

Unlike some of their rivals, both Dickies garments are available in a full range of chest sizes, offering a great fit and complete comfort for the wearer, which is extremely important when being worn for long periods at a time in testing conditions. Both the FR24/7 and FR24/7TP are also available in ‘regular’ and ‘tall’ sizes.

Working in partnership with landscape architect Robert Myers Associates, and Historic Royal Palaces, Charcon provided a paving solution that would not only offer flexible laying patterns but also complement the natural stone paving elsewhere in the Palace grounds. In total, 500m2 of Charcon’s StoneMaster flag and block paving was specified for the hard landscaping elements of the project, including the entrance area, the mound and the perimeter pathway edgings. Mike Davies, Specification Manager at Aggregate Industries, said: “The

overall brief for the project was to create an imaginative new garden for families, drawing on inspiration from the rich history of the palace. Historic Royal Palaces wanted a product that was easy to maintain whilst also being able to create a design that would reflect a time gone by. This is where the mixed sizes of StoneMaster came into play as the flexibility of the laying patterns to create this effect were endless. Furthermore, it provided the client with a cost-effective alternative to natural stone, supplied ready-coated with urban surface protection to make it easier to maintain. “A key challenge was ensuring the correct delivery of the large number of varying sizes required for the project, something we were able to effectively manage by working in close partnership with landscape architects, Robert Myers Associates, and subcontractors, Frost Landscapes, who carried out the work.” StoneMaster offers the inherent beauty of natural stone and is available in three shades of grey, replicating natural granite and Yorkstone. It has a pencil chamfer for

enhanced aesthetics and protection against laying damage. It comprises up to 50 per cent reclaimed and recycled material in the complete mix design and offers an economical alternative to natural stone. To find out more about the Charcon range of products, visit www.charcon.com

Ground Reinforcement October 2016

Hard-landscaping specialists, Bituchem, has recently been involved in the creation of a brand new primary school in Leicestershire. The construction of the new Fossebrook Primary School was completed in mid-July ready to open to Foundation, Year One and Year Two students in September. The school was developed by Leicestershire County Council to provide an additional school for early-year students in the area, and is sponsored by the Discovery Schools Academy Trust. The school was designed by Cornwall-based Kast Architects and MeiLoci landscape architects, who specified Bituchem’s specialist Natratex hard-landscaping material in Cotswold and grey to create an informal demarcated area for the playground. The surfacing works was carried out by Gary Fletcher Surfacing Ltd., who have much experience of Bituchem’s materials. Natratex is Bituchem’s flagship product and has been used for various applications in schools due to its modern aesthetics and safety benefits. The material was selected in grey and Cotswold for Fossebrook School to provide a varied surface for the children to play on, with designated coloured areas adding to the fun of playtime. Melissa Ralph, Landscape Architect at MeiLoci commented, “MeiLoci are very pleased with the Natratex surfacing – a great appearance and finish. Natratex really sets off the new timber school building and the warm tones create a welcoming setting for play. I would thoroughly recommend this product and look forward to working with Bituchem again soon.” Natratex is a material manufactured by Bituchem to the highest standards to offer a seamless, high-performing solution for hard-landscaping. The material is created using naturally-occurring aggregates bound using Bituchem’s specialist clear resin binder to give it the complete compactness that it requires. The Cotswold and

66

grey coloured aggregates offer an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a traditional tarmac finish, with the same durable and long-lasting qualities as asphalt technology. The hard-wearing, compact finish of Natratex has made it a popular choice for school playground applications. The resin binder used to create the smooth surface reduces the likelihood of the material deteriorating and causing potholes or other breakages in the surface so eliminating trip hazards and making the material smoother and safer for young children. Natratex is a very versatile material and can be used for a wide range

of applications, with a variety of colours available to suit all specifications. The material can be used for new constructions, such as Fossebrook School, as well as regeneration and overlay products. Natratex has proved to be a time and cost effective solution as it can be applied quickly and easily using conventional equipment. The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the

need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or

harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.

Roofing October 2016

ROOFING TECHNOLOGY MATCHES THE CORPORATE PHILOSOPHY A new concept in hotels focused on delivering a travel experience that marries modern technology with affordability has extended the promise to the roof. Moxy Hotels is aiming to open 150 hotels in the next decade; the first to be built in the UK - a seven-storey, 200 bedroomedis now under construction in Aberdeen. Specialist roofing contractor for the project Procladd is reflecting the brand’s philosophy of marrying modern technology with affordability, in the choice of roofing. Project co-ordination is being managed by Robertson Construction. Some 1200m2 of Protan SE 1.2mm single ply has been bespoke manufactured in white, and prefabricated in made-to-measure lengths and widths. Procladd simply mechanically fixes along the edges and abutments to install the roof membrane. “The client’s corporate style is white for the roofs, for solar reflectivity. Procladd’s preferred solution was to use Protan, to deliver the specification required, in the most cost-effective way,” explained

72

Procladd’s Stuart Tulloch. “Protan’s ability to prefabricate the sheet to specific sizes- also a unique benefithas further been an influencing factor, as was the use of Protan’s Proplan software, which enabled calculation of the most effective usage of the prefabricated material to minimize wastage. Prefabrication reduces significantly the time taken to construct the roof, and the number of laps needed, thus enhancing the roof’s integrity once complete.” Added Fraser Maitland of Protan UK, “Moxy is about delivering modern technology at an affordable price. That combination of technology and affordability is reflected right through to the use of innovative roofing options.” Protan’s prefabricated solution uses the company’s bespoke Proplan software to calculate the most efficient usage of material to minimise waste; the SE single ply membrane is then manufactured

according to the plan, and factorywelded in a controlled environment, optimising the integrity and on-site performance of seams. On site, all the contractor has to do is fix along the edges and abutments, and detail round penetrations etc. Research has shown potential savings in labour and time of up to 70%. Yet the option is still costcompetitive with conventional rolls of membrane. Protan SE single ply membrane has been developed to withstand even the harshest weather conditions found in Europe, and is proven to perform for 30 years. The company offers a full support service, from NBS specification and in-house CAD design through to technical advice and variable warranty depending on specification from its UK headquarters in Warrington.
