Children at a Greater London school are enjoying two newly renovated outdoor play spaces following the completion of a two-stage development by Sovereign Play Equipment. Cuckoo Hall Academy wanted to improve its outdoor play provision with a number of new installations for the Early Years and Key Stage Two pupils. It had been quoted by two other play equipment companies; however they hadn’t quite captured the school’s needs. Sovereign transformed the Early Years area with a range of physically challenging and stimulating equipment, including a Trim Trail on wetpour surfacing, interactive musical panels, a play lodge and story area complete with imaginative toadstool seating, which provides the children with somewhere to go and simply sit, relax and talk, aiding social skills and inclusion. The story area also makes for a great outdoor classroom, where teachers can read to students in natural surroundings. Nick Efthymiou, Site Manager at Cuckoo Hall commented: “We felt that Sovereign had really understood the brief for our new early years play area and interpreted our needs perfectly. We were very impressed with the design, so much so, that we invited them back to quote for our Key Stage 2 area! The children love their two new exciting play spaces, which they use every day. ” During the second phase of the project, an adventure tower was installed in the Key Stage Two area, encouraging co-ordination, confidence and balance, as well as turn-taking and physical development. Cuckoo Hall Academy now benefits from two new ageappropriate play spaces that encourage the development of physical and social skills in an exciting environment. The children have a mixture of exciting and relaxing areas and the school is prospering from a new learning space. Kebony’s
Sustainable Seaside Shelters Unveiled at Bexhill, Sussex
The creative force behind the project, Millimetre, chose Kebony wood for this innovative seaside project in light of its excellent quality, durability, versatility, aesthetic beauty and exemplary green credentials. The product of a pioneering Norwegian company, Kebony is designed to withstand severe weathering, wear and decay, making it the perfect choice to provide shelter from the elements, whether its blissful sunshine or blowing gales! Commissioned by Rother District Council, these four seafront shelters are a striking architectural addition to the Sussex coastline. Their steel frames ensure durability, whilst the Kebony Scots Pine cladding and Kebony Southern Yellow Pine bench furniture compliment the natural beauty of Bexhill, evolving over time with their surroundings to acquire a beautiful silver grey patina. Rigorously tested in harsh Norwegian climates for its stability – where is has been installed in numerous coastal summerhouses and mountain builds – Kebony demonstrates comparable, and often superior, properties to tropical hardwood. Through an environmentally-friendly process of ‘Kebonization’ the wood is impregnated with a patented mixture based on furfuryl alcohol, a liquid produced from agricultural crop waste, which then reacts with the wood fibres and permanently strengthens the wood. This inspiring project was selected from some 140 entries submitted for a recent RIBA design competition and is the flagship element of Rother District Council’s Next Wave Seafront Improvement Project – a wider £5m cultural regeneration programme. Jan Terje Nielsen, Director of Marketing for Kebony comments:”Millimetre has come up with a truly original and ground-breaking development at Bexhill, marrying cutting edge architecture with a careful consideration of the area’s traditional landscape and natural beauty. Kebony are thrilled to be involved in such a forward-thinking project, ensuring that our unique wood product is the talk of the town!” Reflecting on working with Kebony, Ivan Clarke, Director of Millimetre comments: “We have found the product, the company and the UK supplier to be great – mindful of our needs and helpful. I particularly liked the Southern Yellow Pine boards that we used for the benches within the shelters as the timber has a great consistency of colour and feels like a furniture grade hardwood.” Architects, contractors and developers alike are increasingly turning to high quality, durable and environmentally-friendly products such as Kebony. Kebony offers a revolutionary wood product that can be used for decking, cladding, roofing, windows, indoor and outdoor furniture, yacht decking and other construction materials. In the UK, Kebony are delighted to be working with Brooks Bros, the UK distributor of its innovative flooring product. Most recently, Kebony was chosen by developers Bliss for their prestigious 25 Hurst Avenue, Highgate project – the first UK residential project for Kebony. Kebony was also used in the redevelopment of Yarmouth Harbour – a pioneering sustainable marine development and the first UK harbour installation to use Kebony’s innovative decking material. Kebony has also been used in several boardwalk projects both in Norway and the United States. Bethany Beach (Delaware, United States) installed Kebony boardwalk a year ago and have been so delighted with the results that a larger order has been placed to extend the boardwalk. Meanwhile, Kebony Maple decking has been used as a substitute for teak for a number of high-profile boats such as the Contessa 32, the Atlantis Verve and Elan, the Windy SR52 Blackbird, W40 Maestro boats.

THE STILTz LIFT IS AN INNOvATIvE AND uNIquE LIFT THAT IS DESIgNED FOR THE HOME FROM STILTz – THE HOME LIFT COMpANY. WITH MORE pEOpLE LOOkINg TO INSTALL DOMESTIC LIFTS IN THEIR HOuSES, THE STILTz LIFT IS THE pERFECT ADDITION TO ANY HOME FOR ARCHITECTS, HOuSE BuILDERS, BuILDINg CONTRACTORS, INTERIOR DESIgNERS AND pROpERTY DEvELOpERS DESIgNINg OR BuILDINg HOMES.
The through floor lifts do not use hydraulics or require load bearing walls and can fitted within a day and require minimal building work. Stiltz’s home lifts range consists of three different types of lift including the Duo Lift, the premium Vista Lift and Trio Lift – Stiltz’s wheelchair lifts.
It is powered by a roped drum-braked gear motor drive system that plugs straight into a normal 13-amp power socket like any other household appliance. Due to its size, drive mechanism and dual rail supports, the lifts can be fitted almost anywhere in the home. This is also because the home lifts’ footprint measures just 0.62m2 (based on the entrylevel Duo Lift) and its rectangle shape.
The lifts are ‘real’ through floor lifts and use an intelligent dual rail system which creates a self-supporting structure with the weight of the lift carried in compression through the rails and into the floor of the home.
The Trio wheelchair lifts are based on the Duo Lift model but with a deeper footprint and wider opening. Stiltz lifts can only travel to one floor (multiple lifts can be fitted between floors), and include a number of safety features such as weight and out of balance sensors, and come with different interior and exterior colour finishes options.
DUE TO ITS SIZE, DRIVE MECHANISM AND DUAL RAIL SUPPORTS, THE LIFTS CAN BE FITTED ALMOST ANYWHERE IN THE HOME. THIS IS ALSO BECAUSE THE HOME LIFTS’ FOOTPRINT MEASURES JUST 0.62M2 (BASED ON THE ENTRY-LEVEL DUO LIFT) AND ITS RECTANGLE SHAPE.
The lifts also comply with all relevant European standards with no full planning permission required and government grants available. For further information visit: www.stiltz.co.uk

Large Glass Sliding Doors
In contemporary architecture the drive for bigger glass panels and smaller frames are pushing the architectural glass market to discover and design more sophisticated glass solutions able to stand up against the ever as providing a neat contemporary appearance.
Large Sliding Glass Doors are at the forefront of this move for larger glass panels. Aluminium is the modern builders square edges whilst being able to hold large glass sizes. A maximum of 12m2 per sliding panel gives great scope for large glass sizes, available in double or triple glazing depending on thermal performance requirements. When using these high it is imperative that a highly engineered, fully tested system panels, such as those that can be used with sliding glass doors, can be extremely heavy. In order to have the ease of use needed and expected of these high end products top end roller and wheel engineering is the only way to ensure these sliding door systems run smoothly and easily over their lifetime. Maintaining the frameless across the threshold of the doors is usually preferred. This step free access can also be wheelchair accessible and is great for creating that ‘indoor-outdoor’
that large glass sliding doors can have to a space. The thin 21mm aluminium framing is anodized on 3 sides. Each corner can be slid open to integrate the garden room to the garden for al fresco working when wanted. Large glass expanses bath the internal space with natural light, a proven aid to a constructive working day. What could have been a boring working space is now a small architectural gem, all with the educated use of large glass sliding doors. All in all these emerging sliding door systems are a fantastic addition to any contemporary build and ensure a ‘wow’ factor with minimal design input required.
