Arup trials ‘living wall’ scaffolding system Arup has just launched a scaffolding system fitted with a green living wall to make building sites healthier and more attractive for local communities. by Arup and manufactured by Swedish living wall specialist Green Fortune, and is fitted with sensors to monitor its impact on noise, temperature and air pollution. It is hoped the temporary living wall scaffolding being used on the St Mark’s building project will reduce localised air pollution by up to 20% and dampen noise pollution by up to 10 decibels. The new system is being piloted on a Grade I listed Mayfair building project in London with developer Grosvenor. The temporary wall , named ‘Living Wall Lite’, has been designed

This had led to water damage to the interior and had highlighted problems with the parapet concrete wall above. The failed areas of waterproofing required replacing with a flexible water-proof system which could be terminated over the parapet wall and into the existing waterproofing.

Rodin 33 The apartment building is located in a narrow site, with the dimensions of 7.8m wide by 28m long, on Rodin 33 street. This condition demands an accurate lecture of the architectural program. To optimize the interior space, we decided to look forward for a structural system that would allow us to enjoy the open space. The living room and dinner room are clearly connected to the exterior terraces taking the widest side of the site (7.8 meters). One apartment is located on each floor, allowing the user to take an interesting view of the Mexico City skyline. The façade is molded by a 20-squaremeter terrace that is contained by a concrete frame structure; this semi-open terrace allows the user to transform the space in an hybrid condition between interior and exterior space. In this way, the inhabitant can increase or decrease the interior space by the displacement of the glass façade. To provide natural lighting for each living space of the building we decided to create an interior 6-meter patio; this void divides the public and private areas. Two lateral walls of reinforced concrete are combined together with ten foundation piles 18 meters deep to support the entire structure of the building. Transversely a series of reinforced concrete beams running side by side defines each apartment floor. In parking lots you can appreciate the constructive system used throughout the development, and in this space the structure remains exposed. This constructive system allows us to optimize construction time. In two basements, we placed the lobby, two parking floors, elevators, engine rooms, water tank, services, and storage rooms.
More focus to be put on the shape and form of new houses Energy demand in new homes could be halved if more focus is put on the shape and form of housing being built, the latest report from the NHBC Foundation has found. The current Building Regulations methodology used to demonstrate energy/carbon compliance does not give credit for the energy efficiency inherent in simple forms of homes, and there has been little incentive for designers to use this as part of their low-energy strategies. This study shows that for the same floor area, the most efficient forms of housing such as mid-floor apartments may have less than half the energy demand of the least efficient forms, detached homes and bungalows. Further improvements in energy efficiency can be demonstrated for simply shaped buildings (rectangular rather than ‘L’ or ‘T’ shaped). The challenge of shape and form: Understanding the benefits of efficient design also shows that focusing on simple shapes does not mean homes have to be bland in their appearance. For example, using different materials can provide as much visual appeal as a complex shape. Additionally a consideration of shape and form can deliver energy efficiency without any increase in the cost of homes. Neil Smith, head of research & innovation at NHBC, said: “Whilst further improvements to the energy efficiency standards of Building Regulations have been paused for the time being, the challenge of climate change will not go away. This report provides a useful insight into an approach which starts by considering the inherent efficiency of good shape and form before adding the fabric insulation and efficient services that area also needed.”

Steelwork contractor Severfield confirmed it has secured the frame contract for the 22 Bishopsgate tower in London as part of a haul of half a dozen contracts worth £72m.
Severfield confirms 22 Bishopsgate tower win Ian Lawson, chief executive officer of Severfield, said: “We are delighted to announce these new contract wins and are excited to be working with Multiplex on such a high profile development as 22 Bishopsgate. “This further demonstrates the breadth of the group’s capabilities and the quality of our order book. “The Group has a longstanding history of working on iconic London buildings such as The Shard, London Bridge Station and Wimbledon No 1 Court. Our design, experience and engineering skills have
resulted in a strong pipeline across a range of sectors.” Previously rival William Hare had been widely held as the likely steelwork contractor to take the job. AXA Investment Managers – Real Assets and development partner Lipton Rogers are developing the building, which will be the tallest in the Square Mile. The other five contracts include a commercial office development in the Midlands; two distribution centres in the South East; a research and development complex in Manchester and an extension to a retail complex in London.
New CPD from Aluprof ‘Thermal Design Choices for Aluminium Fenestration Systems’ is a new RIBA approved CPD from leading commercial systems supplier, Aluprof. The CPD aims to give specifiers the knowledge they need to specify the correct systems and their thermal characteristics on a ‘per project’ basis. Aluminium systems have evolved from the solid profiles of the 60’s and 70’s through the resin ‘fill and debridge’ methods of the 80’s and 90’s to the sophisticated polyamide thermal breaks of today. Whilst thermal calculation can determine a particular U value, does the structure it is being fixed into retain the high performance of the product or will it cold bridge and potentially cause issues? How do you best interpret a thermal simulation graphic to choose the best product? Is solar gain, ‘friend’ or ‘foe’? These are questions the CPD will seek to answer. The CPD will be delivered by one of Aluprofs’ experienced Specification Support Team who will be on hand to

Historic yard redevelopment approved Aukett Swanke has secured planning permission for a mixed-use redevelopment scheme at the historic Newson’s Yard in London’s Belgravia.
Aukett Swanke has secured planning permission for a mixed-use scheme in Belgravia that seeks to enhance the area’s reputation as a premier design and retail district. Designed for the Grosvenor Estate, the project is situated at the historic Newson’s Yard site on Pimlico Road in the Belgravia Conservation Area. The proposals, drawn up after community consultation, incorporate the timber yard at 61 Pimlico Road, along with five adjoining retail/ residential properties. A series of interventions will see the conversion of the timber yard into a cathedral-like retail gallery retaining the principal fabric and double-height space, along with the brick piers and timber trusses. The design includes integrated light wells, lifts and staircases intended to open up and improve connections between the yard, the shops and the street. In total, four retail units will be provided creating circa 800 sq m of new retail space, while the existing five dwellings will be replaced by seven new homes. Andrew Murdoch, Aukett Swanke UK Director, said: “Most new speculative retail units are single storey boxes with a glass front – we have created two large units out of the old timber yard, which will have a double height, top-lit gallery at the rear, clearly visible
from the pavement. This will suit the current mix of retailers in Pimlico Road, both in terms of critical mass and quality of the internal retail environment by repurposing the historic, albeit unlisted, features.” Planners considered that the new scheme would enhance or preserve the character of the conservation area as well as resulting in additional economic activity and the possibility of more jobs for the local community. Residents of the new properties will be provided with lifetime (25 years) car club membership by Grosvenor to address potential increased pressure on on-street parking as a result of the development. As to be expected in such a significant area, the development scheme has attracted some controversy. Newson’s Yard is the oldest working timber yard in the country still operational on its original site, and current owner Travis Perkins set up a campaign for its preservation. The Pimlico Road Association also raised concerns about the plans, citing the possible loss of independent businesses that have helped the road become a world renowned interior design hub. Earlier this year, a petition was circulated country-wide among members of the antiques trade asking for support in opposing the development.
Persimmon to Build New Brick Manufacturing Facility in Yorkshire Housebuilding firm Persimmon says that the construction of a new “Brickworks” factory was a further investment in its manufacturing capability. The firm said that cost control and procurement discipline provided crucial support to its successful trading performance as it now looks to build a new brick factory in South Yorkshire. The new site, located close to Doncaster, is commissioned for the first quarter of next year and will be manufacturing a significant amount of Persimmon’s brick requirements. The announcement came in a third quarter trading statement that covered the period from July 1, 2016 to November 1, 2016.
Persimmon took encouragement from trading over the summer weeks straight after the EU referendum, with the volume of customers visiting Persimmon sites staying way ahead of the previous year. From then on, at the beginning of the autumn selling season, Persimmon said that customer activity strengthened in line with the traditional seasonal variations of the market. Since the group posted its half year results on August 23, 2016, private sales rate has been 19% ahead of last year, which represents a continuation of the stronger sales rate experienced during the summer weeks. The company is now fully sold up for this year and has around £757 million of forward sales reserved past 2016,
which is a rise of 4% on the same point last year. Persimmon said that the market has benefitted from strong lender support and resilient consumer confidence. However, the business has recognised that the uncertainty regarding the potential impact of the EU referendum result on the UK economy may go on for some time. Persimmon says that it is still cautious with regard to new land investment but has continued to progress attractive propositions on a selective basis. In a bid to support growth moving forward, the housebuilder is planning to open a new regional operating division near Nottingham on January 2, 2017.

As a refresher, Connect is Trimble’s platform for storing, syncing, referencing, sharing, and collaborating on design/build projects. Sign up for a free account, then start uploading .skp, .pdf, .dxf, .ifc. files. With this integration, we’re packaging the current Trimble Connect Extension into the installer.

The TC integration is accessible from the File menu, and will allow users to upload, pull down, and update SKP’s from Trimble Connect project folders. Islington Customer Centre, London The job/challenge: The client approached Olivers Contracts to refurbish 900 m2 of old flooring which had become contaminated and worn from general foot traffic. There were also a few cracks in certain areas. A floor covering had not been present for several years and instead the old subfloor had been coated with some form of seal and paint. Overall, the floor appeared soft and a little unstable which indicated a weak latex based smoothing compound had been installed previously. It was also clearly visible that small areas across the floor had been patched in suggesting previous failures in those areas. A further concern for Olivers Contracts was that premium luxury vinyl tiles needed to be installed within open and expansive areas containing large windows. Consequently, the floor would be subject to a considerable amount of natural light and potential heat. The floor preparation and installation therefore had to be perfect. On top of this the

footfall in these areas was going to be high so the installation system needed to be strong even though it would be applied over a soft latex subfloor. Olivers Contracts needed to resolve the problems with the subfloor whilst ensuring the subsequent installation of the new floor covering was adequately protected. For peace of mind Olivers Contracts chose a UZIN system because minimising risk was essential.
The solution / implementation: Previous installations had been undertaken by other contractors by applying low strength latex based smoothing compounds. This resulted in a soft subfloor because the seal and paint were applied directly to the latex. Olivers Contracts therefore turned to UZIN’s premium quality product systems to resolve the problem. A Wolff Samba machine with a diamond bits was first used to remove all contamination and loose latex. UZIN NC 888 feather coat was then used

in a few small areas before UZIN PE 280 primer was used to create a barrier between the cementitious subfloor and UZIN NC 110 calcium sulphate based smoothing compound. The luxury vinyl tiles were then installed with UZIN KE 66 high temperature adhesive. Olivers Contracts decided to use UZIN NC 110 smoothing compound as it provided the perfect solution to remedy the projects problems. The product is virtually stress free which dealt with the soft and suspect subfloor whilst offering a strong compressive strength for the new floor covering. The flow and ‘glass like’ smooth finish were ideal and the great coverage provided an added bonus.
The result: The project took place over 4 weekends as planned, without any complications. The client was exceptionally pleased with the finish throughout all areas and there has not been any form of subfloor or product failure since the work was completed.

Construction group SDC saves space, time and money with new SMART OKI Multifunction Printers Customer Background SDC is a construction company group that works across a variety of sectors including research and development, commercial, manufacturing, automotive, healthcare and education. As a result, it often has around 20 to 30 concurrent live projects on the go – each with their own temporary site manager’s office.
The Challenge Building sites can be a tough environment for any printer. It needs to be able to cope with anything, from dust and mud clogging up its insides to rough-handling by a constant stream of users and being moved from site to site. The main challenge is space. SDC had a selection of devices in each of its site offices including A4 mono and A3 colour printers for the many drawings needed for each project, day-to-day office printing and a separate photocopier, all causing space restrictions in an already limited workplace.
Why OKI? The decision was made to standardise all devices so that they originate from a single vendor. Some of SDC’s existing units were OKI printers which had proved robust and reliable, so OKI seemed the obvious choice. The OKI Smart Multifunction Printer (MFP) passed the

o add to this growing crisis the removal of the cap on student numbers in UK universities has seen a 3% rise in university enrolment across the country. This has meant a shortage of accommodation with some students having to share bunk bed rooms in halls, whilst others have been given reduced rate hotels with two weeks to find alternative accommodation. The exciting news is people are finally seeing offsite construction as the answer. This month the government announced new plans to build more than 100,000 modular homes to meet the one million homes target by 2020 Music to Premier Modular’s ears. They had already identified this gap in the market back in 2010 and developed an innovative modular building system. The prediction is that at least 200,000 new homes will need to be built year on year until 2020 to avert this situation. Despite some upturn in house building output last year; many analysts believe the industry remains at least some 100,000 houses a year short to meet demand.
The modular houses, apartments or rooms are assembled not by traditionally skilled tradesmen but rather by manufacturing and engineering trained factory operatives. This opens up the possibility of significantly contributing to the shortage without the need for finding more scare traditional resource. These products offer significant advantages in many other areas: Foremost are the time benefits, as manufacturing is done on a flow line there is no risk of late delivery from outside forces such as the weather. Rooms can be manufactured at a rate of 25 per week and complete houses at a rate of 20 per week, with minimal onsite time.

rchitectural aluminium systems by leading supplier Kawneer have been used on a RIBA award-winning leisure and community centre for their aesthetics and technical capabilities. Two types of Kawneer curtain walling – AA®100 zone-drained and AA®110 mullion-drained SSG (Structurally Silicone Glazed) with 50mm and 65mm sightlines respectively – alongside AA®541 topand side-hung casement windows and series 190 heavy-duty commercial entrance doors feature on the £16 million redeveloped Ashington Leisure Centre in Northumberland. Designed by frequent Kawneer specifiers Ryder Architecture for Northumberland County Council, the 6,400m2 integrated leisure and community facility was briefed in as the centrepiece for Ashington town centre’s strategic regeneration. The brief was also to design a high-quality facility to replace old leisure centre and library buildings, which would make a real difference in terms of skills, health and work opportunities, acting as a catalyst for economic growth, social improvement and enhanced wellbeing. The dry leisure accommodation provides sporting facilities within a flexible six-court sports hall designed to accommodate an array of sports including cricket, badminton, football and gymnastics. In addition, there are two multi-purpose studios, a spinning studio, a new fitness gym, a library and a soft play area. Wet leisure accommodation includes a 25m six-lane swimming pool with spectator seating, a studio pool and a beauty treatment spa. The building has significant glazed elements to the atrium, including clerestory glazing along its full length and full Kawneer curtain walling facades on the east and west elevations. The pool hall has a fully-glazed Kawneer façade to the west elevation and sits behind a series of feature concrete fins which frame the elevation, while the fitness gym is articulated as a feature projecting glass box. The glazed elements create strong visual connections, provide a sense of activity, and flood the building with natural daylight. This is in stark contrast to the old leisure centre and library buildings which provided very little transparency and natural daylight. Overall, the glazing helps to create a welcoming environment which attracts users into the building and ultimately encourages them to stay for extended periods of time. Operated by Active Northumberland, the new building by Carillion on the 1.4-hectare site of a former supermarket is of steel frame with prefabricated concrete façade, zinc rainscreen and the Kawneer curtain walling which was installed, along with the Kawneer windows and doors, by approved specialist sub-contractor SG Aluminium. Inside, the palette of materials is equally varied, with laminated timber joists within the swimming pool hall, feature timber ceiling, glass balustrades and plywood and stone cladding.

Ryder Architecture, who had to design to Sport England, ASA and Cricket ECB requirements, undertook a detailed engagement process with the client stakeholder group to develop the brief. This necessitated a process of concurrent engineering to develop multiple designs which were gradually refined to the final solution. Associate Patrick McMahon said: “As an organisation we are very familiar with the Kawneer range of products and we have used Kawneer on several projects over recent years. In this particular scenario Kawneer was suggested by the contractor as a value engineering option which would achieve the desired quality whilst offering the client a saving. “The curtain walling (including integral doors) has been used extensively within the pool hall, fitness gym and central atrium, with a combination of capped and capless incorporated. We also integrated louvre sun shading within the curtain wall system to both south and west-facing elements of the atrium. “It plays an important part in the overall building composition. A core ambition for the project was to create a highly transparent building which would facilitate passive engagement with the building’s community and sport accommodation. The client has expressed great satisfaction with both the design and built quality of the building.” He added: “We designed the building around a limited palette of robust, highquality materials. The curtain walling system provides very simple, neat, minimalist interface details against the concrete cladding to the façade and zinc rainscreen to the roof. “Responsibly sourced building materials are a fundamental driver within our projects. Our curtain walling specification stated a requirement for BRE Green Guide A+ rating. The installed system satisfied both
our aesthetic aspirations and the technical requirements of the project.” Ashington Leisure Centre won a RIBA North East Award 2016 and was shortlisted in the RCIS Tourism and Leisure awards. The RIBA judges said: “Ashington Community and Leisure Centre is the result of considerable consultation with many stakeholders to replace existing separate facilities into a combined centre. The result is a community and leisure facility that sets a high benchmark and precedent for design excellence, marking the beginning of regeneration for the town centre. “Externally the building stands with civic pride facing the town centre. The scale of the large volumes: the triple height entrance foyer and pool elevation are fenestrated with tall glazed panels bringing elegance and emphasis to the entrance area. “Internally the triple-height foyer space acts as an internal street, connecting the main entrance to rear car park. It is here that the library is found, sharing the foyer with the reception, café and soft play area. This space is a generous and open environment where noise is welcomed but not intrusive. Careful planning separates dry leisure accommodation from wet areas, whilst retaining visual connections between spaces across the foyer. The variety of spaces is complex and varied yet well balanced due to the careful arrangement of the plan around the street, simple detailing and a controlled palette of materials. “It was evident at the time of visit that this building serves its community well. The jury was struck by the variety of people, age ranges and abilities using all parts of the building. It was clear that the original operational targets have been surpassed and that the new centre is significantly contributing to the economic sustainability, social improvement and wellbeing of the wider area.”

Laing O’rourke Chosen as Preferred Bidder for New Retail & Hospitality Development In Dubai Laing O’Rourke has been selected as the preferred bidder for a retail and hospitality project, developed as a joint venture between Emaar Properties and Dubai World Trade Centre, as part of the EXPO 2020 Dubai South masterplan.

he project comprises of a 216,340 sq metre shopping mall with car parking and two hotels. Construction will begin later this year and the project is scheduled to be completed the second half of 2019, ahead of EXPO 2020, which is being hosted in the Dubai South complex. AECOM REPORT ON LIFE CYCLE COSTING:
CONTINUOUS FLOW UP TO 7% MORE COST EFFECTIVE AECOM, a major global player in the building engineering services consultancy arena, has concluded a report showing that continuous flow water heating systems have a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs as well as life cycle costs over 20 years, when compared with stored hot water systems*. The study** shows that continuous flow water heating systems can be up to 7% more economical than equivalent ‘traditional’ stored hot water systems. AECOM was commissioned to carry out a life cycle study on continuous flow water heating systems, and to provide a comparison with conventional storage systems. Two case studies were provided that are based on projects using continuous flow water heating systems. AECOM then determined an equivalent storage based system for each case

study and compared operational and capital costs. For the life cycle comparison, the analysis period was 20 years, based on the expected service life. The net present value (NPV) calculation is based on a discount rate of 3.5% (The GREEN BOOK - HM Treasury), an inflation rate of 2% for servicing costs and projected retail fuel costs from DECC1. In both case studies the continuous flow system showed a clear advantage in terms of initial capital costs, as well
as life cycle costs over 20 years, with the continuous flow system consistently lower in energy use than the two storage systems. Case study 1 This was a system for a typical, small, pre-fabricated fast food restaurant. It is assumed the system only serves the hot water demand. The life cycle analysis includes the initial capital costs, projected annual fuel costs, and estimated annual servicing costs which are assumed to increase by 2% each year. The annual fuel cost assumes the same daily fuel consumption over the whole year. The servicing cost is based on £130/year per boiler, and £160/year for a boiler and cylinder. The resulting net present values of the three showed that the continuous flow system is 6 - 7% lower than the two storage systems based on that 20-year analysis period.

SYSTEMS EMPLOYED IN THE STUDY * Indirect fired storage systems This consists of separate heat source and storage cylinders, where for this study the heat source will be gas fired boilers running on 80ºC flow and 60ºC return with gross efficiency of 89%. As the hot water is stored at 60ºC in insulated cylinders there will be standing heat losses. The standby electricity is assumed to be 15W per boiler, and 60W when operating to cover fan and controls.
Direct fired storage systems
Case study 2 This was a system for a shower block in a holiday camp, with six showers and four basin taps. For the continuous flow option, the analysis is based on a configuration of 4 continuous flow water heaters that each have a nominal output of 48 kW, which, for this particular application, because there is a very short run of pipe work between the water heaters and the fixtures, it is possible for the water heaters to generate water at 40°C. The risk of legionella is overcome by regular flushing of the system. For the energy required to deal with the instantaneous hot water demand the analysis assumes that the bulk of the hot water demand would be due to the showers. Each shower would typically have a flow rate of around 9 litres per minute, which if mixed to 40ºC would equate to an instantaneous load of around 19 kW each, so even if there was only one shower running, the load on a single continuous flow water heater would equate to an efficiency of 95% based on the performance curve. As the hot water demand increases, the modular nature of this particular configuration would allow the 95% efficiency to be maintained for the bulk of the demand. The difference in daily fuel costs between the three systems is around 7%. The usage profile for this case study is particularly suited to continuous flow systems (i.e. high but infrequent demand over the day), which is why there is an advantage in fuel consumption over the storage systems.
This is where the hot water storage cylinder has an integral gas burner to directly heat the water, and the key difference with indirect fired storage systems is that they are designed to operate in condensing mode and generally achieve gross efficiency up to 96%. A disadvantage of direct fired storage systems is that the standing losses are around 3 times higher than indirect storage cylinders.
Continuous flow systems This is essentially a gas boiler that is designed to instantaneously heat mains water for supply directly to water fixtures without any storage. The key advantages with this type of hot water heating, is firstly saving in space needed for hot water cylinders and the associated standing heat losses. The challenge is that instantaneous hot water demand can vary hugely for most systems and therefore the continuous flow heating system needs to have a wide modulation range as well as maintaining efficiency over that range.

Air Leakage is the Biggest Single Waste of Energy for Most UK Buildings Modern, low energy buildings, be it, Passive Houses, German Low Energy Buildings, Canadian Super E or any other energy efficient construction, individually and collectively place Airtightness as a primary part of achieving a low energy building. It is really about time that the UK construction industry followed the lead of these innovative methods of low energy construction, and built homes that use significantly reduced amounts of energy. In the past it was very clear that a lot of heat loss through the fabric of the building envelope was as a result of low levels or no insulation and a very low level of draught sealing. Priority in our building regulations is placed on achieving lower, and lower U-values for each elemental area of the building fabric. This inevitably leads to lower levels of heat loss as a result of an increase of the insulation. However, the proportion of heat loss as a result of uncontrolled air leakage through the external envelope of the building has yet to be seriously addressed. Air leakage allows expensive heated air to escape from our homes and buildings.

The most cost effective means of reducing our heating bills and increasing energy efficiency in our
homes is to decrease to level of uncontrolled ventilation in the living space, in other words improved airtightness. Airtightness lends itself to a comfortable healthy internal atmosphere within the living space and ensures that the building fabric can breathe and is maintained in a healthy condition. This is especially achievable with the Pro Clima Airtight System which utilises a ‘world first’ intelligent membrane, Intello Plus, that manages the inherent moisture out of the structure of the building, even after the building is complete. A lack of airtightness dramatically increases the risk of mould growth and structural degradation, particularly in light weight construction, leading to costly structural repairs, necessitated by the development of mould, rot, damp and condensation. This is as a result of the warm moisture laden heated air in the living space, penetrating and rapidly condensing within structural elements.
Levels of Airtightness can be achieved by sealing the building envelope by using Vapour Barriers, Vapour Checks, wood based panels (e.g. OSB and plywood)’ or by plastering, porous concrete block work. Specifiers may not realise the potential in energy efficiency investment to achieve ongoing cost savings for property owners. In addition to reducing running costs higher market values can be achieved when increasing the property’s energy efficiency performance. Closed cell polyurethane foam insulation for building projects has been around for over 30 years. The polyurethane insulant is a two-component liquid system which produces a highly-efficient blanket of insulation with an exceptional thermal conductivity figure.

Air tightness Polyurethane foam can be installed for air tightness and to help meet Building Regulations as wall insulation, roof insulation, floor insulation or to fill voids and other areas providing a seamless, thermal insulation barrier. Air leakage through the cavity can be reduced to zero. Because of the greater thermal performance and the reduced air leakage PU foam outperforms all other forms of cavity fill. Other
jointed systems give rise to a potentially weak point, leading to a significant loss of insulation value.
Stabilisation Polyurethane foam is not just an insulant – it can be used for stabilisation purposes, for instance to hold tiles in place for a stronger roof structure or to take the place of failing wall ties. The material can often be used when other materials are not suitable.

Superior Thermal Performance For wall insulation, injected polyurethane foam can be used in the cavity to provide a superior performing insulant which also helps to bond the inner and outer leaves providing strength to the building.
Choosing between materials Closed cell foams are resistant to driving rain meaning that the material stays dry with no loss of thermal properties. The insulant can help act as a barrier to prevent flood waters from entering the building through the walls. The British Board of AgrĂŠment certification approves this insulant for cavity walls in all exposure zones. Closed cell
foams which achieve a Class 1 fire rating when tested to BS476 Part 7 are available. Or, where non-Class 1 materials are used on internal applications these must be covered by plasterboard, or a similar thermal barrier. Conversely, open cell polyurethane foams do not have the high insulation properties associated with the closed cell materials, which is a distinct disadvantage if trying to save space. They do not have the same fire performance as closed cell, so they should never be left exposed and they have no structural strength to stabilise roofs or walls. However, they are better suited
for their enhanced sound attenuation properties. Open cell foam is also useful in situations which require more air and vapour into a building’s interior. Where open cell materials are used, the installation thickness can be increased for better thermal performance but if the primary purpose is energy efficiency, then the closed cell option is normally preferable. Fire Protection November 2016 Gypsum fibreboard panels from specialist supplier Fermacell were specified for the new home of one of the most historically significant private collections of fine and decorative arts, for their loading capabilities at least. Some 4,000m2 of fermacell board was used to dry-line the walls, ceilings, bulkheads and external soffits of the award-winning gallery, the new home of the 5,000-strong Portland Collection, on the historic Welbeck estate in Nottinghamshire. Designed by Hugh Broughton Architects, better known for the Halley VI relocatable research station in Antarctica, the £5 million gallery, which exhibits a rarelyshown Michelangelo drawing and a pearl earring worn by Charles I at his execution, is located within the historic walls of the so-called Tan Gallop, a former indoor ¼ mile racehorse training arena. The brief from Welbeck’s charitable Harley Foundation was for a public building with longevity that had to display a finite number of works of art over three exhibition periods, meet the conditions for lending with national museums, and hold its own among the historic buildings already on the estate. Hugh Broughton designed a brick and glass entrance pavilion with two galleries – a barrel-vaulted Long Gallery appropriate for full-length oil paintings and lit by a rooflight running its full length, complemented by a Treasure Gallery with louvered north lights and varying ceiling heights. These elements are supported by office, service, and loading and packing areas. Much consideration was given to the colour for the collection’s setting, with the plain white frequently used for modern galleries retained for the preliminary reception spaces and visitor facilities and the display walls given over to mid tones – mid grey to deep red, supplemented inside individual showcases with green and a rich blue. Its rural location and lack of a gas utility network meant electrically driven plant was required to heat and cool the 880m2 (GIA) building but the use of air-sourced heat pumps and 60kWp photovoltaic array has achieved an A-rated EPC, with the building predicted to emit only 5.04kg of CO2/m2 per annum.

The fermacell gypsum fibreboard panels were installed over five months by teams of up to eight men from The ALD Group for main contractor Caddick Construction onto fermacell steel profiles which allow greater build heights and slimmer walls as well as speedy installation. The panels were then treated with fermacell’s FST (Fine Surface Treatment) to give a skimtype finish. At up to 100% more dense than standard plasterboard, which gives them their incredible racking strength, the 12.5mm square-edged fermacell panels provide a cost-effective single-layer solution to pattressing, being capable of carrying up to 50kg per cavity fixing and 30kg per screw for dead loads. This negates the gallery having to plan particularly carefully in advance where items are to be hung and consequently where specific areas need to be pattressed, making the exhibition design scheme ultimately flexible and futureproof, and the wall section thinner than the traditional plasterboard/pattress combination. ALD Group project manager Karl Angell said: “The project was certainly challenging and highly detailed, with various shadow gap details. These required a high level of thought and technical input. But the Fermacell products were faultless, particularly the FST.” Greg Penate, project architect, Hugh Broughton Architects, who have specified fermacell for other projects including Maidstone Museum, said: “We specified fermacell for all the gallery spaces and entrance pavilion for its direct tile bonding application in wet areas, higher supporting strength per square metre (supporting large art/ casings) and direct external canopy soffit application.” Lisa Gee, director of The Harley Foundation, said: “The finished building and its displays draw on all our ideas and inspirations. The beautiful attention to detail in all of the finishes harks backs to the Harley Foundation’s commitment to craftsmanship and the mark of the hand.” The new gallery for The Portland Collection has already won four RIBA East Midland Awards 2016 and a RIBA National Award 2016.

Marley Eternit Adds Underlays to Create Unparalleled Roof Systems Offer Manufacturer Marley Eternit has launched its own easy-to-install Vapour Permeable and Non Breathable underlays, further enhancing its position as the leading roof systems provider in the UK.

ollowing the acquisition of John Brash, the latest announcement means Marley Eternit now offers the most comprehensive roof system in the market, including roof coverings, fittings and accessories, roofing battens and underlays. This allows specifiers, merchants and contractors to benefit from buying a whole roof system from a single source. The new Universal lightweight underlays incorporate a range of useful features to ensure installation is compliant with the latest requirements of BS 5534. As well as being designed for use in all five UK wind zones, the underlays are marked with guide lines for straight laying and to correspond with the different overlap lengths set out by the British Standard, making it easier for contractors to comply. To meet the British Standard, securing underlay can either involve wastage by requiring larger laps to coincide with a naturally occurring batten course or introduce a health and safety risk with the use of a dangerous fly batten. This provides an effective and easy-to-install solution capable of resisting problems associated with wind uplift, whilst meeting the British Standard. Homeowner’s Guide Roof Refurbishment - How to comply with Building Regulations In October 2010, the latest revision of Part L of the Building Regulations came into force with the objective of implementing the EU’s Energy Performance of Building Directive. The aim was to reduce energy use in buildings. Part L is concerned with the Conservation of Fuel and Power in buildings.
THE KEY REQUIREMENTS: •
The regulations come into effect when 50% or more of the roof area is being refurbished. In simple terms, it means that the whole of that roof must be brought up to the thermal efficiency demanded by the current regulations if it doesn’t meet a minimum threshold standard.

A strip and re-roof or even just the provision of a new layer of waterproofing, for example when striping and re-felting a flat roof, will usually necessitate the upgrading of the thermal performance of the roof.

Multi Award Winning Craftsm You would think a long established lead craftsman that has won the Murdoch Sponsors Award three times in ten years would be livid at losing his “Excellent” grading on a technicality.
H
owever far from resenting the decision by the LCA Council to reduce his grading for not attending a technical seminar in 2015, Vince McKee of McKee Plumbing in Maidstone, Kent has insisted it was the right decision.
“No individual is bigger than this organisation” said Vince “and we all know what the rules are. Work prevented me from going to the June Seminar in London and I had planned to go to the September seminar in Manchester, but then at the last minute couldn’t attend that one either.” All LCA members must attend one technical seminar each year as part of their Continuing Professional Development and commitment to the quality standards ethic of the Association. The mandatory attendance rule was implemented by Council after discussion with members at the 2011 AGM. It was seen as an essential part of keeping members up to date with technical developments and changes within the sector as well as the opportunity to draw in relevant people from outside the organisation, such as architects and senior representatives from the LSA, the heritage sector and others, to provide their own insight into lead sheet design, specification and installation.

Welsh Slate wins an A grade at Abington Natural Welsh Slates feature on a new £3 million primary school in Scotland. A contemporary take on the traditional Scottish vernacular has been topped with roofing by Welsh Slate, part of the Lagan Group. Some 1,000m2 or 19,000 Penrhyn Heather Blue Celtic-grade 500mm by 300mm natural slates were specified by South Lanarkshire Council for the new £3 million Abington Primary School, the authority’s fifth project using Welsh Slate. Welsh Slate had been used previously on Lamington and Leadhills primary schools and Lanark Memorial Hall and is currently being used on West Coats primary school. Architect Chris Green, of South Lanarkshire’s housing and technical resources department, said: “We liked the colour and the quality of finish and the fact there is no rusting or staining. We have used it previously when looking to get a matching slate for the Scottish ballachulish slate which is no longer mined. “Slate roofs with stone and rendered walls are in keeping with the local vernacular. Slate roofs with painted timber open eaves is a traditional detail seen on many buildings in the local area.” At Abington, the Welsh slates were installed by Braisby Roofing for main contractor CCG (Campbell Construction Group) who completed within 44 weeks. The 25˚ duo-pitched roof required a larger slate size than usual to give the necessary overlap.

The new school is part of South Lanarkshire’s £800 million school modernisation programme and was constructed on land adjacent to the former school building to offer new, enhanced facilities for pupils in their first years of primary education. A total of two classrooms are provided alongside a separate space for nursery pupils. New office facilities are provided for faculty staff as well as a dual-function gymnasium. This gymnasium space has been designed to be utilised as both an indoor sports areas as well as operating as a dining room during the lunch hour. Out of school hours, the space operates as a community hub with high-specification lighting and sound equipment installed to the stage area at the rear of the hall. Externally, pupils have ample playground space adjacent to a fully-enclosed, all-weather sports pitch. Abington utilised a CCG off-site manufactured closed-panel timber solution for the construction, inclusive of windows, doors, insulation and service zones. Locally-sourced stone was used for the exterior alongside a specially-designed entrance that utilises different colours of glazing to create a unique atmosphere for pupils in the main hallway. Bringing a 17th century farmhouse to modern standards of energy efficiency and comfort
– Houlston Manor, Shropshire Houlston Manor is an unlisted mainly 17th century box-framed farmhouse, which has been substantially added to and altered over the years. In the early 19th century, the house was also ‘gentrified’ according to the fashion of the day when the timber-framed front wall was replaced with brick to create a unified exterior.

wned by the same family for generations, the current owner was born in the house and has lived there ever since. While the basic structure of the house – including the roof - was in good condition, the windows were in a state of disrepair. In addition, the southern gable end had been letting in wind-driven rain through failed pointing and, despite having central heating (installed in the 1990s) and insulated attic spaces, the house was not a warm one.

The owner’s aims were threefold: to replace the rotten and draughty windows with new; to insulate the walls, and; to improve the appearance of the house by re-introducing the 19th Century symmetry. After choosing timber casement windows to replace the rotten sashes, a number of wall insulation solutions were considered. The owner decided that external insulation would help resolve the aesthetics issue and deal with both the threat of failing pointing and general poor weather-proofing. Houlston Manor is solid-walled and without a damp-proof course and the risk of moisture condensation within the walls was considered to be of

paramount importance. The use of breathable materials, which would allow vapour transfer through the insulating layer, was essential and the Lime Green Warmshell system, which uses wood fibre board as the insulation layer and lime render as a weather-proofer, was judged to fit the bill. The sustainable Warmshell insulation system is flexible ad perfect for bringing an old traditionally constructed building up to modern energy efficiency standards. To install the Warmshell system at Houlston Manor, wood-fibre insulation boards were fixed directly to the external brickwork after excavating down around the sides of the house at ground level – a precaution taken as the house had different floor levels internally. The insulation boards were then covered by two coats of lime render – a basecoat (with reinforcing fibreglass mesh) and decorative finishing coat. The eaves were also extended to ensure that the roof had significant overhang over the insulation and renders. Houlston Manor is now secure, warm and weather-proof for decades to come. In the first three months following the installation of Warmshell (in winter 2015), the property used 2800kWh for heating, compared to 6821 kWh in the exact same period the previous year. This represents an incredible 59% reduction in energy costs! As the original brick walls dry out and warm up over time, the owners expect to see even greater energy cost savings. The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the
need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or
harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.

aterials supplied included just over 6,000m2 of StoneMaster in Mid Grey and Light Grey hues and almost one kilometre of Eco Countryside Kerb. The products were specified due to their high quality finish of lightly etched premium granite aggregate. Working in partnership with the designers, Townshend Landscape Architects, the Charcon specification team added a new 300x100x80 size to the StoneMaster range, specifically for the project. The paving has been utilised in the project’s public realm, including courtyard areas and access roads, complementing and enhancing the buildings it surrounds. With up to 50 per cent and 82 per cent of reclaimed and recycled material respectively, the use of Charcon’s StoneMaster and Eco Countryside Kerb hard landscaping products, is helping client, Barratt London, meet the project’s sustainability targets. With two different paving products supplied in large quantities, the logistics of ensuring the client had what they needed and when within phase one was planned to the letter. The team at Charcon worked closely with the groundworks team to establish a detailed delivery schedule, adhering to a range of strict site rules and regulations.

New Footbridge In Seatown, System For Harsh Environments CTS Bridges supply their footbridges with a variety of high quality protective finishes depending on the bridge location, aesthetic aspiration and budget. A recent bridge installation in Cullen, Morayshire required an attractive paint system to suit a harsh environment due to its exposure to the North Sea.
Vierendeel Truss cycleway bridge at Cullen, Morayshire The new cycle/footbridge was recently designed, manufactured and installed by CTS Bridges. It was needed to replace an old concrete structure built in the 1930’s which was in very poor condition. Mr David Walker, a local resident, who kindly sent these photographs, commented “The bridge has been very well received and is something of a talking point among those who use it and who like to visit Cullen.” The new bridge forms part of the Moray Coast Trail and is 3m wide to accommodate both cyclists and pedestrians on what is one of the busiest footbridges in the area due to its proximity to the beach car park and golf club. Due to its location next to the North Sea a paint suitable for exposed conditions was required, and so a Highways Agency Series 1900 paint specification for marine environment, difficult access was proposed which will give the bridge a life to first major maintenance of 20 years.
Footbridge Protective Systems: The type of protective finish is a function of aesthetics, performance and budget. However the specification also depends on the Environmental exposure conditions (usually defined as either inland or marine) and accessibility (described as ready or difficult access). Accessibility defined as “difficult access” is usually specified when future painting maintenance, and inspections would be onerous and involve some form

of traffic management and/or temporary access works. Typical types of protective system available for bridges are painted, galvanised, a combination of both or weathering (Corten) steel. Many truss type forms of bridges have integral parapet infill, in that they are welded to the primary structure. In this instance the protective system would typically be as per the primary structure and not considered a “parapet” as described in Highways Agency series 1900.
Painted finish: CTS typically apply Highways agency approved paint systems to their steel fabrications with the Top coat defined by the Client using a standard colour description and a BS or RAL number The two paint systems most commonly used are:Type 1 for Ready Access, which typically gives life to major maintenance of 15 – 20 years, and Type 2 for Difficult Access which typically provides life to major maintenance of 20 – 25 years, subject to the environment in which the bridge is placed. For Highways bridges or bridges on other trunk roads we supply a completed Appendix 19/1 Form HA/P1 paint system sheet.
Galvanised finish: A galvanised finish lends itself predominantly to bolted frame steel beam bridges- as the maximum geometry of the galvanising tank restricts the system application to larger welded truss forms. A galvanised finish will give an average life of 20 years without maintenance but can

Cullen Requires Protective Due To North Sea Location: be up to 40 years depending on the environment. The Engineers and Architects Guide to Hot Dip Galvanising states a life of 34 to 70 years depending on area. Our bridges are galvanised in accordance with BS 1461. This finish provides an economical option with minimal maintenance.
Galvanised and painted: To provide as less industrial look, a galvanised and then painted structure is sometimes specified, in accordance with series 1900. The same geometrical constraints apply as the galvanised only option and this is inherently more expensive as the structure is often required to be bolted together to facilitate the galvanising process- a more laborious fabrication- but loses the commercial advantage of a cheaper protective coating. Maintenance is similar to a painted structure as the paint coating requires minor and major maintenance, in a similar manner to a paint only solution.
Corten / Weathering Steel Weathering steel is a high strength low allow steel originally developed in the USA to resist corrosion
and was given the trade name Cor-ten. In suitable environments the steel forms an adherent protective rust patina that inhibits further corrosion. This type of finish is not suitable for bridges in coastal environments. It has very low maintenance requirements and is ideal where access for future maintenance is difficult or dangerous. Weathering steel material is more expensive that traditional mild steel, and it can only be sourced in flat plate meaning beams need to be fabricated rather than rolled. However the additional early expense may be offset by removal of painting requirements and significant reduction in maintenance costs. Glass Bending Excellence
Toughened Glass Bends Firman Glass new toughening plant includes two bending chambers which work alongside the standard flat bed. The smaller chamber will bend glass from 5mm to 12mm thick to a maximum size of 2850mm x 1000mm bent and with the following minimum radii. 5mm, 6mm = 450mm 8mm, 10mm = 1000mm 12mm = 1200mm The large chamber will bend glass from 6mm to 19mm thick to a maximum size of 2850mm x 3600mm bent and with the following minimum radii. 6mm = 1500mm 8mm, 10mm = 1800mm 12mm, 15mm = 2000mm 19mm = 2500mm
Working in conjunction with the flat toughening facility to a maximum flat size of 2850mm wide x 5000mm long. Firman Glass can now offer the Architect, Designer and Contractor a complete service for multiple uses such as balustrades, partitions, shower screens, revolving door enclosures, full height barriers, partitions and shopfronts. Curved Glass can be processed as with flat glass and can be decorated by sandblasting and back painting.
