£15bn transport vision unveiled by northern cities Five major cities in the north of England are to outline a £15 billion plan to improve road and rail connections across the region.

The One North Consortium, which comprises the city Newcastle, will unveil the plan today, which is aimed at improving the connectivity between cities across the north, including a new east-west line across the Pennines. The plan follows George Osborne’s speech in June when the chancellor set out a vision for a new trans-Pennine high-speed rail link connecting Manchester and Leeds in a move aimed at creating a “northern powerhouse” city economy. The chancellor argued that better transport connectivity was vital if the north of England was to compete with London and the south east.

Osborne said the government would look at the One North report and work up a plan for delivering its component parts. Osborne said that in the autumn he would also set out proposals for a major devolution of civic power and responsibilities for cities with elected mayors. In October, David Higgins, chair of HS2, is also set to publish his report on the northern phase of HS2, including initial options for an HS3 cross-Pennine fast rail link.

Studio Weave has scooped a £10,000 RIBA award to research independence and privacy in co-housing. Je Ahn & Maria Smith, founders of the practice that was shortlisted for last year’s Young Architect of the Year Awards, were among four winners of this year’s RIBA Research Trust Awards. Architect Guan Lee and artist Eleanor Morgan also scooped £10,000 for a project called Clay Robotics: Sustainable practice in a digital world. They said: “This practice-led research project will reconsider the extraction and use of local clay deposits by combining traditional expertise with robotic technologies. NEWLY REFURBISHED IRONMONGER ROW BATHS INCLUDE A LAUNDERETTE EQUIPPED BY ARMSTRONG As part of a major refurbishment by Islington Borough Council of the Ironmonger Row Baths, a launderette has been installed, equipped by Armstrong Commercial Laundry Systems. The baths, originally built in 1931, always included a laundry for public use and so, for historical reasons and to maintain this valuable service for local residents, it was decided to carry this on while also providing a facility to handle the substantial amount of laundry generated by the various facilities within the site. The unit comprises six Primus washer extractors – three 7kg and three 16kg models, six Speed Queen tumble dryers and two Primus ironers. It is open to the public from 0800-2000 on weekdays and 1000-1600 at weekends, with service washes, which and members of the public purchase vouchers from the site’s main reception which are exchanged for tokens from the attendant. Ironmonger Row Baths, now operated for Islington Borough by charitable social enterprise GLL, comprises a comprehensive range of leisure facilities including a gym, two swimming pools and a group exercise studio. It is also home to Spa London, hammam, steam rooms and sauna sited with the building’s original art deco Turkish Baths. Sarah Matson, operations manager at Ironmonger Row Baths, told us, “The launderette is in constant use with the laundry we generate and the members of the public who use it. We have been very pleased with the equipment and the service we have had from Armstrong and overall the unit is a very valuable part of our very popular and busy site”. Tony and Nicky Maude lived in a listed manor house but dreamed of building a modern, sustainable home that would be easy to maintain and provide the space they needed to entertain friends. In 2012, their dream came true when they moved into the ultra modern and award winning White Lodge, which they designed with the help of Dyer Grimes Architects. The journey Selling their classic but expensive to run manor house, Tony and Nicky wanted to stay in the area and continue to country living. However, at the same time they also aimed to declutter their lifestyle, simplify their domestic surroundings and reduce their utility bills. Fortunately they did not have to look far and found, only a short distance away, an unloved, prefabricated, 1960s detached bungalow. The almost derelict property was shielded by tall trees and enjoyed panoramic views across the Surrey Downs and beyond. The site appeared to be perfect, apart from being located in an area surrounded by traditional pitched roof properties and controlled by a Council whose strict planning requirements strongly favoured retaining the local vernacular. But when you have a dream, and a good

architect, you can make things happen. So Tony and Nicky bought the bungalow, and its perfect position, not knowing whether they would ever obtain planning permission. The challenges Their brief for the design of the ultra contemporary home and entertainment space, to be illuminated by extensive glazing that would also make the most of the mature grounds, the surrounding countryside and the allessential swimming pool. The home was also to embrace high sustainable standards of build and maintenance. Dyer Grimes Architects’ ultimate design would have to take into account Tony and Nicky’s requirements to persuade a potentially restrictive development control regime to grant planning permission, remodel a site which sloped sharply away to one side and create a contemporary home that would complement the area’s existing, traditional residential properties. One of the early challenges was the local planning authority, which had a long-standing policy that ensured all new build homes matched the immediate area’s traditional vernacular. But this was not to stand in the way of Tony and Nicky who did

not want planning restrictions to preclude their stretching the planners’ imaginations and pushing the boundaries of contemporary design. The proposed home’s design would also have to overcome site, which could have greatly limited the overall size of the building and the planned landscaping. To add to the design challenges the property’s construction had to embrace sustainable features that would be both easy and taking advantage of renewable materials and energy. Working closely with both its clients and the planning authority, over 18 months Dyer Grimes Architects produced a design that won the approval level part of the site and build a contemporary, three-tiered, sixbedroom home, with 480m2 of remaining sloping section. Hanham Hall picks up national design award Barratt’s innovative Hanham Hall development in Bristol is celebrating another award – this time for its outstanding design. The development has won the Richard Feilden Completed Project award at the prestigious 2014 Housing Design Awards. Barratt Bristol’s managing director Richard Gregory said he was thrilled that the landmark development had once again been recognised on the national stage. Richard said: “This award is a tribute to the whole team involved in creating such a great development. HTA Design was behind the design element of the development and the collaborative approach between Barratt, the Homes and Communities Agency and South Gloucestershire Council has

Casella’s real-time dust and noise measurement system BOUNDARY Guardian set to protect London’s environment A series of major demolition, construction and rejuvenation projects across London will be adopting an innovative noise and dust monitoring technology this summer by using Casella’s pioneering BOUNDARY Guardian. This web-based, remote UK construction industry by ensuring compliance with regulatory limits, including Section 61 restrictions and PPG24. Although the self-supporting structure made the lift easy to install, Stannah also went the extra mile to the stairs against an existing short-angled wall. By installing special supporting brackets, Stannah allowing the fully glazed structure and lift car to deliver light, airy design aesthetic. “The Midilift SLplus provided the best access solution,” states Terry Waterworth, Senior Architect at Archial NORR. “All the decision-makers agreed that the position and type of lift in the large entrance atrium was critical. Positioned next to the stairs, the lift car is housed within a self-supporting structure comprising 21 glass panels. Berry Systems Cladding For New Southwater Car Park

key feature of the Southwater Regeneration project in Telford is the construction of a 600 space multi-storey car park with potential for expansion by a further 350 spaces in future years. Associated Architects of Birmingham discussed the cladding requirements with car park specialists Berry Systems at an early stage in the project’s development. This enabled Berry Systems to demonstrate their ‘in depth’ expertise by designing a cladding system that met the pedestrian loading requirements of BS 6180 and so removed the need for additional pedestrian handrailing on interior faces. The expanded metal mesh cladding was then produced and installed by Berry Systems’ own team for contractor Morgan Sindall. They also installed vehicle safety column mounted barrier systems. Installation was completed in April 2014 in good time for the planned August launch event for phase 1 of this £250 million project.

LUXONIC INVESTS £¾ MILLION IN LED LUMINAIRE PRODUCTION

Luxonic has just completed a ten-month programme and a £¾ million investment in expanding its production facilities in Basingstoke to allow for increase in demand for LED luminaires. Consolidating all the company’s manufacturing onto the Basingstoke site required an extensive re-organisation of the factory. Engineering is at the heart of the factory and two mezzanine assembly areas have been installed increasing production area by 30%. The introduction of a ‘Lean Manufacturing’ programme at Luxonic streamlines the manufacturing process, vastly improves Manufacturing principle is to create production cells for each of the Luxonic product ranges where a team is now responsible for every aspect of that range’s production.
