Barratt London to start twisting tower Barratt London is preparing to start construction of a 28-storey twisting tower on one of the last remaining Thames riverfront sites in Wandsworth. Enabling and piling works will get underway this month after the developer gained full planning for the 135 apartment scheme at Lombard Wharf, adjacent to the Grade II listed Cremone Bridge.

The ground level features a double-height glazed residential lobby and a riverfront retail unit. The mezzanine level contains a and management welfare facilities. Bays for 30 cars and 182 bicycle spaces are provided at basement level.

Barratt London has allocated 20% of housing and is committing £1.6m to improve local infrastructure. Designed by local architects Patel Taylor, wraparound balconies, rotated at an angle of two degrees, appear as twist is achieved by the diagonal lines of tapered solid balustrades jutting against the horizontal lines of the balconies.

Homes will achieve Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4 and a BREEAM Excellent Rating.

Alastair Baird, regional managing director of Barratt London, said: “Lombard Wharf is one of the last remaining plots on the Thames and we are looking forward to which has been vacant since 2012 and currently restricts pedestrian access along the river.”

BSRIA welcomes Obama’s Clean Power Plan Speech BSRIA has welcomed the key messages in Obama’s ‘Clean Power Plan’ speech. The aim of the revised plan is to cut greenhouse gas emissions from US power stations by nearly a third within 15 years. Obama unveiled what he called ‘the biggest, most important step the USA has ever taken’ in tackling climate change. The measures wind and solar power and other renewable energy sources. The revised plan will aim to cut carbon emissions from the power sector by 32 per cent by 2030, compared with 2005 levels. Julia Evans, Chief Executive, BSRIA, said: “We welcome Obama’s position in confronting climate change and cutting greenhouse

gas emissions by almost a third within 15 years. BSRIA is clearly in support of this perspective, especially the essential uptake of renewable energy. It is evident that Obama’s administration has got a clear direction in which they wish the future US energy market to be heading – which gives me its members and the industry. Such messages will signal huge – from a global perspective. face of the recent UK government announcements where BSRIA is getting the impression that energy and carbon reduction issues are being viewed as a burden to government – which is inhibiting – not only the industry – but the

economy at large. The lack of stability in subsidy means industry can’t plan for a ‘green future’. It is ironic that in recent weeks, our own government has scrapped subsidies for onshore wind and commercial solar – the two cheapest forms of clean energy, budget, lowered taxes on tax on clean energy. Nothing in the Secretary of State’s speech that the government is taking the carbon reduction agenda seriously. The President sees this plan as the cornerstone of his attempt to secure a global treaty on climate change in Paris at the end of the year where he will argue for global reductions in greenhouse gases.

Aldi plans to open 130 extra stores in UK German discount supermarket Aldi has unveiled plans to pump £600m into expanding its store network over the next two years.

The supermarket chain is also planning several distribution centres to support the growth programme.

The ambitious plan to take on rivals like Tesco and Sainsbury’s will see 130 new stores opened and the UK workforce reach 35,000.

Birmingham contractor DSP Construction Management is about to start work on a 600,000 sq ft regional distribution centre just south of the A6, near Bolton where Imtech is on board as building services contractor.

Aldi has boomed in recent years, and in April it overtook Waitrose as the UK’s sixth-biggest supermarket, with 5.3% of the market share. It has focused on smaller-scale stores looking at build costs of £1m-£3m for each store rather than the £10m+ favoured by the other chains.

Aldi is also presently planning to build a similar regional distribution centre at Sheerness in Kent and a major 1.2m sq ft logistic centre at Sawley Crossroads in Derby. These schemes have been design by Birmingham-based STOAS Architects.

Breaking The Cycle: JP Concrete working with HM Prison Onley JP Concrete Products have just announced they have started working with HM Prison Onley to assist with the manufacturing of some of their precast concrete products. A few months ago, HM Prison Onley got in touch with JP Concrete to see if they would be interested in supplying some concrete moulds to their workshop to be used as part of prisoners’ precast concrete and

to supply the prison with a small number of interlocking block moulds, concrete ballast block moulds and concrete barrier moulds for use in the prisoners’ workshop. Philip White at JP Concrete commented: “HM Prison Onley’s something we really support, so we’re very happy to have been asked to help. Equipping prisoners with skills which they can take away with them is a fantastic way to help them secure themselves a brighter future.” HM Prison Onley in Warwickshire is a forward-thinking facility where great emphasis is placed

As part of the program, each trainee is set an individual sentence plan. This structured outline takes the prisoner through particular levels throughout their sentence, all the way through to their release. Throughout the plan, prisoners

are actively encouraged to take personal responsibility for their progression through each stage and contribute to their own learning. The areas in which HM Prison Onley are aiming to train prisoners are wide ranging, and include painting and decorating, motor mechanics, carpentry, bricklaying, kitchen work, industrial cleaning, textiles and precast concrete manufacture (as well as forklift truck operation). Onley also has an academy on site where prisoners can learn how to perform bike repairs. JP Concrete’s precast concrete moulds are now in place at HM Prison Onley and prisoners have started working with them as part of their hands-on training. Manufactured to exacting standards, the trainees are able to use these moulds to produce precast concrete products suitable for distribution to construction sites around the country. Philip White continued: “We continue to work closely with HM Prison Onley and we’re looking forward to hearing feedback on how the prisoners’ training is going.”

Ramp & slab heating

Fully programmable thermostats

Case study 2015 RaMP HeatING ICe & sNow PReveNtIoN

The system ensures the ramp can be used all year round... The Goal A Heat Mat ramp heating system has been specified and installed at the Greatmoor Energy from Waste Facility currently under construction in Edgcott, Buckinghamshire. The facility, commissioned by Buckinghamshire County Council, is intended to convert 300,000 tonnes of residual waste to energy at an existing landfill site in Calvert, Buckinghamshire. The household waste will be burned inside the plant to generate electricity and hot water year round. The structure incorporates a concrete pavement and steep ramp for refuse vehicles to drive up, carrying waste to the enclosed reception area. This ramp must be accessible 365 days a year to maximise the plant’s efficiency. Contractor Sir Robert McAlpine approached Heat Mat to supply and oversee the installation of a robust slab heating system (ramp heating) for the entrance to the reception hall. The purpose of this system is to ensure the site remains accessible in any weather conditions.

The system has an output of around 270W/sqm. Due to the steepness of the drive and the power of the heating, there was no requirement to heat the drainage channels as the melt water temperature would be high enough to keep them ice free. A fully automated timer/thermostat was installed utilising a ground-level sensor that monitored the driveway temperature and local moisture levels. The intelligent sensor ensures the system is only turned on when there is a genuine risk of icy conditions. The output is sufficient to heat the area and ensure it remains ice and snow free in temperatures down to approximately -25°C, however it is in temperatures around freezing that there is the greatest risk of precipitation. The sensors also recognise when the system is no longer required and switch off once the area is clear of melt water. This minimises running costs, which are projected to be less than £150 a year in a ‘cold’ winter.

Heat Mat’s Solution

The Result

A high output 7mm In-screed cable system was specified to heat the ground beneath the asphalt. A loose cable was chosen over a mat system as this suited the driveway construction and also allowed the output of the heating to be varied across the ramp as required.

Once calibrated to the local conditions the system performed its task efficiently ensuring the driveway was free of ice and snow, remaining safe for residents and their vehicles.

Keynsham Town Hall has also been shortlisted in this year’s Wood Awards, under the category, Education & Public Sector. The £34m redevelopment included the demolition of the existing

Town Hall, outdated 1960’s shops and the library - replacing the buildings with new low carbon council office space for 688 people, 1,858m2 retail spaces, a new library and a one-stop-shop for council and other public sector services. Sustainability was a key aspect of the scheme. Energy efficiency was built into the design which was specified to achieve the top DEC (Display Energy Certificate) ‘A’ rating under the Governments Energy Performance Certification scheme. This is the highest rating possible and is given to buildings producing the lowest CO2 emissions - only a small percentage of office buildings have ever received this accolade. Banyan Wharf celebrated Outstanding Architectural Merit at the Evening Standard New Homes Awards for architects Hawkins/Brown. This record breaking timber tower also took home the Innovation Award at the Celebrating Construction Awards for the X-LAM Alliance. The design and construction of Banyan Wharf required high levels of technical advancement, innovation and rigorous planning through a strict programme of works, as well as the use of BIM technology and CNC machines, to overcome the challenges that were presented to finish the build on time. A complex hybrid steel/CLT structure also makes this one of the most unusual medium rise apartment developments in London.

Kerrock – the material with infinite possibilities.

Amari Plastics, the UK’s leading distributor of plastic sheets, rods, films and tubes are always on the lookout for additional products to ensure that their product offering to the retail and interiors market is as broad as can be. Designers and architects are constantly on the search for products which allow them to make their ideas a reality, whilst also providing functionality and ease of care. Kerrock solid surface material fulfils all of these requirements and is set to make a huge impact on the UK market for retail design. Whether it is for food service areas, checkout counters, display cases, wall cladding, furniture or changing rooms, Kerrock has the versatility and durability to

offer the perfect solution. The colour and texture options are unlimited and its non porous structure means that when properly cleaned, it won`t allow the growth of bacteria. It can also withstand the rigours of high volume traffic areas in your store or shopping centre. Kerrock is a composite material that looks and feels like stone but is actually acrylic based. The composition is made by mixing acrylic polymer with aluminium hydroxide both of which are completely safe to both humans and the environment as a whole. It has been given the fire classification of “fire retardant”, meaning it meets fire classification class B s1-do

according to EN 13501-1 the new European standard norm. This classification is achieved without the addition of halogenated fire retardants, making the material non-toxic. Its fire rating means that it can be used in domestic or commercial applications where increased fire regulations are in place such as airports, metro, shopping malls, shops, exhibitions or interior panelling. Kerrock is a fabricators dream as it can be processed in a multitude of ways. Bend it, shape it, thermoform it, engrave it! What you do with Kerrock is really down to your imagination! Kerrock can be processed in the same manner as wood, using the usual woodworking machinery. You can use nearly all wood processing methods: sawing, drilling, cutting, grinding, milling, polishing, gluing and thermal designing. Kerrock allows you to create virtually seamless structures and sculptures, to match the design you desire. Kerrock Lumino, offers a range of bright, highly translucent colours which can be used to create ambience in your retail space and opens up new possibilities for designers and architects. As Kerrock is solid the whole way through, you have the ability to engrave patterns into Kerrock to show store logos or create signage which can be back lit to reveal your design.

These will be used by Isle of Harris Distillers, after it begins operations this summer. Steadmans provided over 1,700 linear metres of its 40mm thick AS35 composite panels, in juniper green, for the warehouses. This consisted of almost 980 linear metres for the roofs and over 740 linear metres for the walls. The company also supplied 750 linear metres of Zed purlins, over 500 linear metres of C sections, more than 50 linear metres of eaves beams and 500

The materials were installed by 3b construction which provides a fully integrated, in-house service for building, civil engineering, structural steel and agricultural projects throughout Scotland and supplies steel frame buildings throughout the UK. Iain Barr, a director of 3b construction, said: “We’ve used Steadmans materials for several years and have invariably found the company’s products robust and friendly, and its overall service

Abbotsford House Long Rake Spar supplied their market leading, specialist dried aggregates to Addagrip approved contractor The Fraser Bruce Group for their installment at Abbotsford House, Scotland. The project was completed using a 6mm Rhine Gold decorative aggregate to achieve a sustainable and SuDS compliant surface, which is both long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing. Abbotsford House has undergone a lottery funded restoration to both the internal and external areas of the property. As part of the overall restoration works, Addagrip approved contractor The Fraser Bruce Group carried out the installation of 6mm

Rhine Gold Terrabound Resin Surfacing at a depth of 18mm to the courtyard and garden pathways totalling 850m2. It was essential throughout the works that the aesthetics of the system were not compromised and the joints were kept to a minimum. The contractors had to follow a layout plan for positioning of the ‘day joints’ which was achieved despite battling with poor weather conditions throughout the period. The project was completed within a short time frame to allow the property to return to regular use as soon as possible and the client was highly appreciative of the work undertaken and the visual

Landscaping August 2015 Bridges Limited were appointed by Aberdeenshire Council to design, manufacture and install a replica of Ladies Bridge in a tidal location at Cruden Bay. The original bridge was constructed in 1922 following a fundraising drive led by local women and thereby named Ladies Bridge. Recently the bridge had been closed for months following concerns it would collapse following sever storm damage Local community groups were again involved in raising funds to secure a new bridge as it is a vital link to the beach and local businesses. CTS carried out a photographic and dimensional survey of the existing bridge and its support trestles. A new structural design was prepared to current design codes whilst maintaining the principles of the original structure.

Survey of original bridge by CTS Bridges

Parapet detail to match style of original bridge

Cosmetically the new bridge adopts the distinctive diagonal paling arrangement for the parapets although the new parapet is not painted. The entire structure uses FSC accredited Ekki hardwood which is naturally durable and well suited to the coastal environment; omitting paint does not reduce the service life of the structure but removes a maintenance requirement.

The footbridge deck has FSC Ekki hardwood Hi-Grip Excel which has two nonslip strips of resin bauxite bonded into two grooves in each deck board. This provides a safe, slip resistant surface on the bridge deck. Hi-Grip Excel decking is manufactured by CTS Bridges Ltd and is available to purchase as a stand alone product.

Construction, carried out by The Lindum Group, saw the original wooden bar replaced by the new Moet Pavilion roof terrace overlooking the course and parade rings, as part of the 2nd phase of a multi-million pound redevelopment of York Racecourse. The Moet Pavilion is a very popular and well used meeting point on race days which can see a few hundred people being catered for in this facility. The back of house areas certainly come under the hammer on these busy occasions with the movement of boxes and barrels having the potential to cause damage and marking to walls and corners.

Nick Fazackerley, General Manager of York Racecourse Hospitality commented “The new wall protectors are excellent, we have a lot of pallets, kegs and trolleys which our team are good at bashing into walls but with the protection in place you would never know. They are a great addition to the facilities.” The installation of the Yeoman Shield rubber Mini D Fender and MD 75 Corner Protection Angles will contribute to keeping the busy back of house areas looking smart and damage free
