Called Atlantic, the home is located in the Hamptons hamlet of Amagansett and is just steps from the beach.

Clad in weathered cedar shingles, the historic station consists of a lookout tower, cupolas and elevated decks. Inside, large, open rooms have exposed beams from which boats and gear can be hung.

“The station is part of a network of structures used to provide rescue and

Encompassing 3,000 square feet (279 square metres), the cottage has two guest suites and a family room on the ground level. A retractable glass wall fully opens up to the backyard.

The materials were selected for their proven durability in coastal environments.

The upper storey contains entertaining and living spaces, along with a roof deck lined with glass railings.

“As each material weathers over time, the appearance of the siding will record the cycles of rain, sun, freeze and thaw,” the firm said. The cedar will lighten, while the bronze will develop a dark brown patina and the weathering steel will further rust.

“To minimise the impact of the footprint on the sensitive ecological environment, the main living area is stacked above the bedrooms, and, like the lookout towers of the stations, an even higher roof deck provides elevated views of ocean,” the firm said.

Inside, an exposed steel structure defines the main living spaces and forms a framework to which “other functions can be hung”. “The main stair is strung from beams above, and the rods used to support each tread serve as guardrail for the stair,” the architects explained. Light fixtures and a swinging chair are also suspended from the overhead beams. Other Long Island projects by Bates Masi include a home with sprung cedar boards that can be acoustically “tuned” and a dwelling whose form references the area’s traditional potato barns.

Export deal lands steel manufacturer in Cyprus

A steel manufacturer has completed an export deal to supply one of its flagship products to a high profile multi-million pound redevelopment in the capital of Cyprus. Fabweld Steel Products (FSP) has supplied its FAB Pave™ access covers to the project in Nicosia designed by the firm of award-winning architect, the late Zaha Hadid. Hadid’s company won the Europe-wide competition for the revamp of Eleftheria Square, the main piazza in the centre that sits below the Venetian walls of the medieval city. The project aims to unify the ancient parts with the modern centre and is said to be “dramatic and historically significant”. Hadid’s designs include the Aquatics Centre used in the 2012 London Olympics and other major projects worldwide.

FSP, based in Telford, Shropshire, supplied its FAB Pave access covers, which allow access to vital services below ground while blending the floor’s paving with the overall surface, finished in a special hard wearing paint. Managing Director Richard Hilton said: “Securing the contract for Eleftheria Square is testimony to the versatility and stylish design of the FAB Pave series. This is an area that will attract high footfall and it demanded a top quality specification to deliver the aesthetic the architects want to achieve. “The flexibility of Fab Pave access covers meant we could work closely with the contractor to deliver their specific finish. To have our products chosen for such a high profile international project is a huge honour.” The €50,000 contract is one of a number

of overseas deals on FSP’s order book. Export is an area that the firm expects to grow in 2017 with the impending exit from Europe and the strong Euro making British manufactured products an attractive buy. Richard added: “We are currently working on some exciting projects in France and Germany that should come to fruition in the next year. THE BUILDING BRICKS FOR A CAREER IN CONSTRUCTION With figures estimating that women account for just 1% of workers on construction sites, it’s rare to find a female site manager running the show. But they do exist. And they can bring real benefits to the working environment as illustrated by site manager Charlotte Hale of Neath based Hale Construction. Instead of keeping order by yelling (as might be stereotyped of a site manager…), her approach is different.

“I talk to people” she explains. “If someone isn’t working as well as usual, I’ll ask them if something is wrong instead of shouting”. Yet Charlotte does add that the ability for a woman to shout is still a prerequisite. “You do need to be strong. Construction sites can be dangerous places so if there’s a potential health and safety issue for example, you have to be stern.”

Although Charlotte hadn’t previously planned to join her family’s construction business, she helped out on site during her university holidays and found she loved it. “I really enjoyed being in the thick of things. It suits my mind-set. When problems arise, although they’re construction based, I can see a way out of them through being innovative.”

Multiplex scoops landmark £1bn Nine Elms scheme Chinese developer Dalian Wanda Group has selected Multiplex to build its £1bn Nine Elms development near Vauxhall in London. Multiplex is the third contractor to take on the project after two previous preferred bidders failed to agree a final price. Interserve was originally selected to deliver the mixed-use project comprising two towers reaching 42 and 58 storeys. But the firm and its joint venture partner China State Construction Engineering Corporation abandoned the project in April. Balfour Beatty then beat Multiplex on the project rebid, but also stepped away two months ago after failing to agree the contract price. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s blocking your Fire Exits? Nowadays it is safe to say that the majority of employers consider the responsibility of Health and Safety high on its list of priorities. Unchecked, blocked fire exits are without a doubt an accident waiting to happen and should be taken seriously. Putting checking systems in place is an excellent idea but as we all know with most routines of this nature fall by the way side all too soon. Some premises are more vulnerable than others and are likely to have fire exits obstructed possibly by pallets, scaffolding, rubbish, vehicles, incorrectly opened roller shutters the list goes on. Electronic security manufacturer Hoyles have not only increased their range of Exitguard fire door alarms but at the same time they have developed a clever way to ensure fire exit doors are regularly checked and available to be fully opened in the event of an emergency. The Exitguard fire exit door alarm is a time served favourite of the security installer and has recently taken on an additional role. The new facility is called Fire Door Checker and is now a standard feature available on all of the keypad operated Exitguards. The Fire Door Checker has the unique facility to alert staff to OpenCheck-Close as soon as

the building is occupied. This is done by causing each Exitguard to give out an intermittent sound whilst strobing. Only when the fire doors have been verified will the Exitguard sounder and strobe stop. A 350+ bed hospital built in the 1970’s and serving a quarter of a million people in the Barnsley area, the hospital demands a constant regime of maintenance throughout its premises. Maintaining its high standards, Barnsley Hospital have improved the surroundings and facilities in 6 of the hospital wards, including the discharge unit, female trauma and elective orthopaedic unit. As part of the refurbishment project Yeoman Shield were employed to remove the old bump rail and handrails and replace them with the dual purpose Guardian Twin Handrail to corridors and waiting areas throughout the 6 wards. Contra Vision® Ceramic XR™ uses a patented method to print two separately coloured layers of ceramic frit dots (other print patterns such as lines can also be incorporated) in exact registration with no overlap, directly onto glass. A simple white on black dot pattern adds solar control, privacy and manifestation to the outside of glass while maintaining a remarkable level of through-vision from inside. Other colours can be used instead of white to provide decoration to building exteriors or internal partitioning glass.

Ceramic white dots are effective at reflecting solar energy and glare, while acting to distract the eye and provide privacy to people inside. However, white (or coloured) dots are less appealing when viewed from inside, giving a milky aspect to the world and accentuating greys. Kawneer systems help regenerate a city Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Smithfield scheme features Kawneer glazing systems. Architectural glazing systems from Kawneer feature on a striking new building that is key to the regeneration of a city and was built using a hybrid of traditional and modular construction methods. Kawneer’s AA®100 and AA®110 curtain walling, both zone-drained but with 50mm and 65mm sightlines respectively, complemented by 451PT framing with 50mm sightlines and AA®540 side-hung casement

January 2017 windows, were used on Two Smithfield, the new £15 million office built as part of the first phase of Stokeon-Trent City Council’s Smithfield scheme. Smithfield is the new mixed-use quarter for Stokeon-Trent by developer Genr8, comprising 1.2 million ft2 of office, retail and hotel space. The project will also deliver more than 270,000ft2 of new public realm. The first phase of the Smithfield project was completed in August 2015 and comprises 220,000ft2 of bespoke Grade A office accommodation. One Smithfield has a new customer hub from which the council delivers its primary services and will also house police and other public sector partners. Two Smithfield includes ground-floor commercial units totalling 7,500ft2 and comprises four floors of offices, two of which have already been let to Water Plus. This is a joint venture between two of the country’s biggest water companies, United Utilities and Seven Trent Water. It is bringing over 400 new jobs to the city. The other floors are currently being marketed by Bilfinger GVA The new buildings are set in stunning new public realm, including a new public square which is available as performance and event space. Much of the 125,000ft2 Two Smithfield building consisted of components utilising modular manufacturing, such as precast concrete panels and brickwork cornices and glazed brick elements which were completed off-site. The four-hectare site was historically a manufacturing area for the brick and ceramic industries and was littered with mine shafts and coal seams which required piling. Design of the masterplan was

conceived in 2009 by Aedas RHWL. Designed by frequent Kawneer specifiers Aedas RHWL architects, Two Smithfield’s curtain walling was used for all the windows and external glazing of the project. Associate Alasdair Mealey said: “As the building was procured using a design and build contract, we produced a performance specification at tender stage, which was then assessed by the main contractor (Laing O’Rourke) who proposed the Kawneer curtain walling system. We assessed the proposal along with the project façade consultant and deemed that it met the required criteria for the building. “The Kawneer curtain walling system had to interface with precast concrete primary structure and façade panels. Key items that had to be resolved were weather proofing, thermal bridging and air tightness and the Kawneer system met both the aesthetic and performance requirements.” “The building had a mixed-mode ventilation strategy so the curtain walling system had to incorporate opening lights.” He added: “The quality of what has been delivered, given budget and expectations, is first class. The Kawneer elements at Two Smithfield, which achieved a BREEAM “Excellent” rating, were installed over three months by approved specialist sub-contractor Bennett Architectural Aluminium. Alasdair said: “The glazed elements were a key part of the design, both aesthetically and from a performance standpoint, so the glazing had to be correct. Inherently we aim to specify all products from sustainable sources and our performance specification for the project listed all relevant standards and best practice which the chosen curtain walling system/product had to adhere to. “There was a commitment to optimising the scheme as part of the design process and gaining a clear understanding of what technical solutions worked. The attention to detail and economy of pre-site manufacture is evidence of a very well thought through development.” Bennett director Rob Bennett said: “This new public realm building was designed to reflect the heritage of the potteries whilst using modern methods of off-site construction. Within a fast-track programme we installed curtain wall screens to give the building impressive verticality.” Further phases are now in the pipeline including Three Smithfield (a 50,000ft2 commercial office building) and a new 125-bedroom hotel.

RINNAI GOES SOLO IN UK FIRST Rinnai, the leading continuous flow gas fired water heater manufacturer, launches its latest innovation, the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater with storage combined. Award winning architectural firm, Nord Architects, has unveiled its latest design; a contemporary Urban Hospice intended to create a positive environment while offering support for patients in need of palliative care. Located in the tranquil setting of Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, the vision was to provide a warm and protective atmosphere for up to sixteen patients. Kebony, a beautiful wood recommended by leading architects, was chosen to complement this setting and has subsequently been used throughout the build for the decking, windows and shades, door frames, as well as in outdoor spaces where Kebony clad plant baskets bring elements of nature into the Hospice. Krone Vinduer provided the custom-made windows for this project.

The project was designed to adapt to the neighbourhood, presenting a combination of spacious views and privacy for patients. Incorporating both curved and linear elements, the design allows for an impressive functional layout, built around a private inner courtyard.

January 2017 Case Study The design-process involved a close collaboration between the client, architects, an engineer and users of the hospice through an extensive dialogue that heavily influenced the final design. Developed in Norway, the patented Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly process, which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural by-product. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability, hardness and dimensional stability. For Kebony, this is an exceptional project which demonstrates the versatility of the material. The silver-grey patina that the wood develops over its elongated life-span has also singled it out as a popular material for architects. When it comes to choosing a wood, there is no reason for architects to compromise on aesthetics, build quality, or sustainability. CRL shines the spotlight on an eco-timber house in Aberdeenshire AN ENERGY efficient, eco timber house in Aberdeenshire has been crowned as a winner of a campaign that shines the spotlight on self-builders. CRL is delighted to announce that “Heartwood” in Aboyne is one of three winners selected to take part in its Venturous Builds campaign – an inspiring new web series that will showcase Britain’s inspiring self-builders and their construction achievements. Local couple Vic Kirwan, 68, and Teresa Green, 66, have been selected by the structural defects insurance specialist as being truly venturous of spirit. Vic, a retired broadcast engineer, and Teresa, a dental receptionist, commissioned Stommel Haus, a German manufacturer of timber houses, to develop a custom built, energy efficient eco timber house. The campaign, which saw CRL launch its logo into space, aimed to inspire those who have dared to be venturous, brave and unorthodox to share the details of their venturous builds. Winners will have their project filmed and featured on the online show. “Heartwood” was built only using untreated Arctic Heartwood Spruce from FSC certified forests in Finland. The stunning three-bedroom home is insulated using recycled newspaper and recycled glass. With 216 m² living space, there is also a double height dining room from which you can see the vaulted timber ceiling, with views over the beautiful rolling hills of Deeside. The house is heated using a heat pump and ground-breaking technology “Heating with Ice”, which uses ambient heat and solar thermic energy. Vic, who lives in Aboyne, said: “It was always our dream to build a timber home that was highly energy efficient. Construction is almost complete and we look forward to moving into our new home. January 2016 There are more people looking for a home in the UK than there are houses to choose from, according to the latest RICS UK Residential Market Survey. In addition, monthly house buyer demand has risen by 10 per cent since October, outstripping supply. Architectural glazing by leading UK aluminium systems manufacturer Kawneer has been specified for an award-winning community church for its ability to match performance with cost-effectiveness. Kawneer’s AA®100 zone-drained curtain walling, AA®540 top-hung casement vents, and series 190 heavy-duty commercial entrance doors and swing doors were selected by Barber Casanovas Ruffles architects for the £5 million Cambridge Community Church (C3). The new church for C3, a vibrant contemporary evangelical church, was built on the site of the previous St Stephens Church on Brookes Road, Cambridge, with a brief to provide a state-of-the-art facility that was large, spacious and welcoming to existing and prospective worshippers. Barber Casanovas Ruffles met the brief designing a three-storey circa 2,900m² steel frame and composite slab building. The main frontage responds to the site and Coldhams Lane

roundabout and is curved on plan to respond to the site boundary and public footpath. The site location is on a gateway into Cambridge. The building comprises a 500-seat auditorium, multi-purpose rooms, full catering facilities, offices, break-out areas and a walk-in café for all members of the public. The heavily-glazed building is also faced with brickwork and is expressed with glulam beams in facetted structural bays. Planning requirements dictated high levels of acoustic control to retain noise within the building. The design responded to this requirement and the building completed to suit. Some elements of the old church were salvaged and inserted into the new building. These included the existing church cross from the top of the original church roof and cast concrete lintels with

A Barber Casanovas Ruffles spokesman said: “Kawneer was selected for many reasons. The practice has a long history with the use of the products, their balance of performance, longevity and cost. “The Kawneer systems have a major architectural influence on the project because the frontage needed to be open and inviting and transparent and friendly to encourage parishioners or people with religious beliefs to join the church. The product satisfied the technical performance and the architectural aesthetic required for the scheme. “Aluminium is robust, generally lightweight and recyclable which provides a longevity to the building, an ability to retain the aesthetic over time, to

keep the weight on the structure to a minimum, and is a commercially-available product which suits industry budgets.” The Kawneer systems were installed for main contractor Farrans Construction by specialist subcontractor JPJ Installations who used 150mm flat caps on the curtain walling entrances integrated with additional horizontal pressings around the doors. The C3 Centre won Best Public Service Building in the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2016 for East Anglia. These awards recognise building excellence in the delivery of outstanding construction and workmanship. BCR said: “The client is absolutely delighted with the facility and we as a practice are delighted to have been and continue to be involved with the C3 Centre. We are very proud of the design, the client and contractor teams and the efforts made to ensure the building is a success.”

Sioo Wood Protection â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a new wood modification for the UK All too often the appearance of new timber clad buildings is ruined by uneven weathering. It is quite common to see buildings where the shaded areas are still un-weathered whereas the exposed areas have already changed to the silvery-grey colour associated with exposed wood.

The product has been used extensively for cladding and decking protection and has also been used to protect the decks of sailing boats.

For this reason, pictures of timber clad buildings are always taken immediately after construction and not after a year or two! Aesthetics is hugely important in the built environment and this patchy weathering puts people off from specifying timber as a cladding material.

The Sioo system is used as a surface protection system, which is suitable for Use Classes 1, 2, 3.1 and 3.2 according to EN 335 Part 2 (see table). If additional protection is thought necessary for Use Class 3.2 applications, then the Sioo Wood Protection System can be applied to preservative treated wood and to thermally treated wood.

A new product in the UK is the Swedish wood surface modification system, Sioo Wood Protection. This product reacts with the wood to produce a pleasing even grey surface within a few months of application.

When used in interior applications Sioo Wood has the huge advantage of being VOC-free, since it is waterbased and uses silicate technology. Disposal at end of life is not a problem, since the product is non-toxic.

Hard-landscaping specialists, Bituchem, has recently been involved in the creation of a brand new primary school in Leicestershire. The construction of the new Fossebrook Primary School was completed in mid-July ready to open to Foundation, Year One and Year Two students in September. The school was developed by Leicestershire County Council to provide an additional school for early-year students in the area, and is sponsored by the Discovery Schools Academy Trust. Sizing the plant for a single house is simple its number of bedrooms plus two, so a three bedroom house is a 5 person treatment plant, for multiple dwellings using the same treatment plant speak to the manufacturer for the correct size unit, most manufactures range are in increments 1-5, 1-7, 5-13 etc. up to 50 person. The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the

need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or

harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.

We strongly advise servicing the system on an annual basis and this will take on average less than an hour to complete. If you have any problem with your unit, call us and we will come out and fix it free of charge. t One service visit where all necessary checks are carried out. This includes assessing the aeration pattern, sludge levels and effluent quality. t All labour expenses for servicing and call outs are covered so there are no hidden costs. t The cost of all serviceable parts will be free of charge. This includes rebuilding the air pump, replacing the diaphragms and also the air filters. t Sludge return is carried out as required. This is the removal of settled sludge from the outer scum ring back into the centre chamber to be re digested and treated again. This helps to keep the emptying period low. t Emptying is NOT included in the agreement as the Bio-Pure does not require emptying for 3-5 years. t The service agreement lasts for 12 months and will also help
