Hamptons home by Bates Masi features cantilevering upper floor American firm Bates Masi + Architects took cues from a historic lifeguard station while designing this cedar-clad dwelling on Long Island, New York. Called Atlantic, the home is located in the Hamptons hamlet of Amagansett and is just steps from the beach.

relief for shipwrecked sailors, and it was from this station that a guard once discovered Nazi invaders coming ashore during world war two,” said Bates Masi + Architects, a local firm known for its modern beach cottages.

Its design was influenced by a US LifeSaving Service station across the street, which was built over a century ago to help distressed mariners.

Clad in weathered cedar shingles, the historic station consists of a lookout tower, cupolas and elevated decks. Inside, large, open rooms have exposed beams from which boats and gear can be hung.

“The station is part of a network of structures used to provide rescue and

“Taking cues from this structure, the design of the new residence strikes a

dialogue with the landmark to enrich the experience of the new home and celebrate the local history,” the studio said. Topped with a large, flat roof, the rectilinear dwelling has an upper level that cantilevers over the ground floor. A window wall provides sweeping views and is shaded by a deep eave. Weathering steel wraps the base of the cottage, while higher up the exterior walls are clad in thick cedar boards affixed to bronze bars. The team developed a system that enabled the

January 2017 Industry News wood siding to be hung without being fastened into place, allowing the boards to naturally expand and contract as the temperature and humidity levels change.

Encompassing 3,000 square feet (279 square metres), the cottage has two guest suites and a family room on the ground level. A retractable glass wall fully opens up to the backyard.

The materials were selected for their proven durability in coastal environments.

The upper storey contains entertaining and living spaces, along with a roof deck lined with glass railings.

“As each material weathers over time, the appearance of the siding will record the cycles of rain, sun, freeze and thaw,” the firm said. The cedar will lighten, while the bronze will develop a dark brown patina and the weathering steel will further rust.

“To minimise the impact of the footprint on the sensitive ecological environment, the main living area is stacked above the bedrooms, and, like the lookout towers of the stations, an even higher roof deck provides elevated views of ocean,” the firm said.

Inside, an exposed steel structure defines the main living spaces and forms a framework to which “other functions can be hung”. “The main stair is strung from beams above, and the rods used to support each tread serve as guardrail for the stair,” the architects explained. Light fixtures and a swinging chair are also suspended from the overhead beams. Other Long Island projects by Bates Masi include a home with sprung cedar boards that can be acoustically “tuned” and a dwelling whose form references the area’s traditional potato barns.

Export deal lands steel manufacturer in Cyprus

A steel manufacturer has completed an export deal to supply one of its flagship products to a high profile multi-million pound redevelopment in the capital of Cyprus. Fabweld Steel Products (FSP) has supplied its FAB Pave™ access covers to the project in Nicosia designed by the firm of award-winning architect, the late Zaha Hadid. Hadid’s company won the Europe-wide competition for the revamp of Eleftheria Square, the main piazza in the centre that sits below the Venetian walls of the medieval city. The project aims to unify the ancient parts with the modern centre and is said to be “dramatic and historically significant”. Hadid’s designs include the Aquatics Centre used in the 2012 London Olympics and other major projects worldwide.

FSP, based in Telford, Shropshire, supplied its FAB Pave access covers, which allow access to vital services below ground while blending the floor’s paving with the overall surface, finished in a special hard wearing paint. Managing Director Richard Hilton said: “Securing the contract for Eleftheria Square is testimony to the versatility and stylish design of the FAB Pave series. This is an area that will attract high footfall and it demanded a top quality specification to deliver the aesthetic the architects want to achieve. “The flexibility of Fab Pave access covers meant we could work closely with the contractor to deliver their specific finish. To have our products chosen for such a high profile international project is a huge honour.” The €50,000 contract is one of a number

of overseas deals on FSP’s order book. Export is an area that the firm expects to grow in 2017 with the impending exit from Europe and the strong Euro making British manufactured products an attractive buy. Richard added: “We are currently working on some exciting projects in France and Germany that should come to fruition in the next year. We intend to capitalise on the positive export conditions through 2017 and beyond with a strategic focus to grow the global side of our business. “Manhole and access covers remain our core products but our investment in research and development is allowing us to develop a reputation for providing bespoke access solutions, both at home and abroad.” For more information about FSP, visit www.fsp.co.uk

THE BUILDING BRICKS FOR A CAREER IN CONSTRUCTION With figures estimating that women account for just 1% of workers on construction sites, it’s rare to find a female site manager running the show. But they do exist. And they can bring real benefits to the working environment as illustrated by site manager Charlotte Hale of Neath based Hale Construction. Instead of keeping order by yelling (as might be stereotyped of a site manager…), her approach is different.

06

“I talk to people” she explains. “If someone isn’t working as well as usual, I’ll ask them if something is wrong instead of shouting”. Yet Charlotte does add that the ability for a woman to shout is still a prerequisite. “You do need to be strong. Construction sites can be dangerous places so if there’s a potential health and safety issue for example, you have to be stern.”

Although Charlotte hadn’t previously planned to join her family’s construction business, she helped out on site during her university holidays and found she loved it. “I really enjoyed being in the thick of things. It suits my mind-set. When problems arise, although they’re construction based, I can see a way out of them through being innovative.”

Multiplex scoops landmark £1bn Nine Elms scheme Chinese developer Dalian Wanda Group has selected Multiplex to build its £1bn Nine Elms development near Vauxhall in London. Multiplex is the third contractor to take on the project after two previous preferred bidders failed to agree a final price. Interserve was originally selected to deliver the mixed-use project comprising two towers reaching 42 and 58 storeys. But the firm and its joint venture partner China State Construction Engineering Corporation abandoned the project in April. Balfour Beatty then beat Multiplex on the project rebid, but also stepped away two months ago after failing to agree the contract price. Premier Power Partnerships Premier Modular Ltd is experiencing strong growth as it looks to take on new opportunities and expand its footprint in a number of sectors whilst maintaining its formidable longstanding client partnerships in more established markets. Premier Modular takes pride in its exceptional customer service, innovative products and build quality, attributes that mean it has become one of the UK’s premier suppliers of modular building solutions. Celebrating 60 years in operation in 2016, the company boasts a strong heritage and a proven track record for delivering high quality modular buildings to a diverse range of market sectors. Premier Modular has experienced a positive growth trajectory over the last six months, dramatically increasing both turnover and profitability leading to another factory being taken on of around 40000 sqft. Two key factors have been implicit in this success story. The first, a focus on new sectors, has led to Premier’s appointment

to provide a series of modular complexes at Hinkley Point C in Somerset. The buildings will provide 38,000 sqm of offices and welfare facilities (1000 steel framed modules manufactured in East Yorkshire), to house all the management and technical personnel required for the construction phase of the new nuclear power station. Part of the buildings will be converted after the construction cycle to remain as high quality offices for the permanent site. The second factor is that the business understands the value and has not lost sight of its current client base whilst looking to the future. Premier Modular puts great value on forming strong, mutually beneficial client relationships. One such partnership is with Battersea Power Station Development Company Ltd where they have provided numerous buildings over a 12 year period including offices, welfare and marketing suites. Premier worked with the contractors and investors from the very early stages to help develop a solution, through engagement with the client, they understood that the client needed someone with design flexibility, who could react quickly and reliably to any requirements as timescales are vitally important and provide a truly personal hands-on approach. An example of this teamwork in action was seen during the initial start-up phase of the

10

January 2017 development when the client required additional office space for an ever expanding project team. In partnership Premier provided a 4 storey building using 38 modules to accommodate 100 additional desks, break out / meeting rooms and bathroom facilities. The design and siting of the building was complex as it was located within a courtyard next to the existing offices with link bridges to enable direct access between the two buildings. The highlight of the facility is a boardroom on the top floor with full height external glazing, which overlooks the Phase 2 development. Premier Modular is a forward thinking company, striving for constant improvement through lessons learnt and client feedback, they have an open and transparent working practice where all ideas are welcome; this is evident internally and in their dealings with clients, industry organisations and the market in general. Rachel Davis, Business Development Director says “We have maintained success in our established core markets, seen growing success in student accommodation, retail and several

commercial sectors, now we are turning our attention to two new markets; by constantly improving and adapting our products and services we ensure they are suitable for each unique market and client.” In striving to provide a solution that suits the client’s unique demands, the flexible and innovative Premier Modular has developed a solid reputation for focusing on attention-to-detail, quality and longevity of the products it delivers – resulting in the company gaining recognition from award bodies in 2016. This included the Offsite Awards where they gained a ‘Highly Commended’ for The Best Use of Volumetric Construction at New Islington Free School, working alongside Conlon Construction; and the Construction News Awards, which named the company’s The Foundry student accommodation, winner of the Project of The Year (Up To £10 million) where Premier were supply chain partner to Sir Robert McAlpine.

achieving solid growth. Rachel Davis highlights “Over the coming years it is our goal to build on our facilities management/maintenance service, offering our customers more of a one-stop-shop to become the go-to firm for modular hire and sales. Key to this is the continued growth of our reputation in the market through the delivery of excellent service and innovative products.”

Having invested in its facilities, people and products over the last 12 months in line with its key initiatives, Premier Modular will continue to push forward with

What’s blocking your Fire Exits? Nowadays it is safe to say that the majority of employers consider the responsibility of Health and Safety high on its list of priorities. Unchecked, blocked fire exits are without a doubt an accident waiting to happen and should be taken seriously. Putting checking systems in place is an excellent idea but as we all know with most routines of this nature fall by the way side all too soon. Some premises are more vulnerable than others and are likely to have fire exits obstructed possibly by pallets, scaffolding, rubbish, vehicles, incorrectly opened roller shutters the list goes on. Electronic security manufacturer Hoyles have not only increased their range of Exitguard fire door alarms but at the same time they have developed a clever way to ensure fire exit doors are regularly checked and available to be fully opened in the event of an emergency. The Exitguard fire exit door alarm is a time served favourite of the security installer and has recently taken on an additional role. The new facility is called Fire Door Checker and is now a standard feature available on all of the keypad operated Exitguards. The Fire Door Checker has the unique facility to alert staff to OpenCheck-Close as soon as

the building is occupied. This is done by causing each Exitguard to give out an intermittent sound whilst strobing. Only when the fire doors have been verified will the Exitguard sounder and strobe stop. This ensures the door is available for emergency use, after which it resumes its normal security monitoring role. This could prove invaluable to management and those responsible for safety and security ensuring that staff incorporates the checking procedure of each fire exit door into the daily routine and at the same time educating against the dangers of blocked fire exits. The Fire Door Checker works simply by a switched signal from the intruder alarm, clocking machine, a time switch or independently. If a more frequent check is required the time switch option will allow the user to introduce a tighter regime of checking suitable to their exact requirements. As well as the unique Fire Door Checker function, Hoyles Exitguard door alarm range provides a comprehensive solution for the security and prevention of misuse of fire exit doors. The different models provide options for battery, 12vdc and mains power source as well as control by either keypad or key switch.

Surface Protection January 2017

Immerse yourself into this year’s Surface Spotlight Hospitality and Education at Surface Design Show 2017 2017 Surface Design Show will be highlighting two industry sectors as this year’s Surface Spotlight hospitality and education. Materials and surfaces play a significant role in the experience we have with our surroundings, they need to be practical yet still inspiring. In the hospitality sector the surfaces must exude luxe whilst still maintaining the necessary hard wearing qualities for high footfall areas. The education sector again must incorporate hard working surfaces with an environment that inspires learning. Surface Design Show returns 7-9 February 2017 to London’s Business Design Centre with almost limitless design possibilities to architects and designers who are looking for the best in surface design for the hospitality and education sector. There is also a packed programme of events, with many of the seminars focusing on surfaces within the hospitality and education sector including ‘Future Trends in Hospitality Design’ hosted by Sleeper Magazine and ‘Sustainable Design Health and Wellbeing in Higher Education’ hosted by FIS. Surface Spotlight Live debuted in 2016, Trend & design writer Sally Angharad will once again be curating Surface Spotlight Live 2017, which consists of a regular Surface Spotlight Newsletter and an ‘at show’ feature

18

and presentation showcasing the most innovative materials for Education & Hospitality spaces before they hit the market. Exhibitors with materials specially designed for the hospitality and education sectors include: CD UK (Stand 210) will be displaying Corian - perfect for the education sector and tells a colourful tale in the new ‘Learning Garden’ at Windmill Primary School. A key feature of the space, is an array of colourful posts and blocks made from DuPont Corian hi-tech surfaces and engraved with lettering to suggest the spines of books in a library. Cellecta (Stand 252) have installed HEXATHERM XFLOOR 500 into Bournemouth Art University Accommodation. Similarly ScreedBoard 20 was installed in the prestigious University of Oxford student accommodation development providing minimal sound intrusion and under floor heating. Grestec Tiles (Stand 596) industrial glass wall tiles are complete with a mix of metal and craquele texture effects to form innovative, industrial style wall panels that can be utilised to create an extraordinary effect for hospitality interiors. Spectral (Stand LS360) provided an energy efficient lighting scheme for

University of Hertfordshire’s labs to offer a fantastic quality of light so the students can complete their work and the right aesthetic which the university found appealing. Nora (Stand 240) rubber floor coverings are ideal for schools as the durability means chairs and tables do not cause any damage to the robust covering. Factorylux lighting recently brought the first cycle café to life by combining a café, bicycle workshop, a bar, and exhibition space. The busy space required complex and conflicting lighting to keep up with the film screenings, live cycle sport and even cyclist speed dating. Factorylux will be holding workshops in their mobile space at Surface Design Show 17. BAL (Stand 616) provide innovative fixing technology for fail-safe external tiling on balconies, roof terraces and patios for high-end luxury developments such as hospitality. BAL’s technology helps to provide seamless transitions from inside to outdoors, creating usable outside areas all year round. Yeoman Shield’s new Guardian Twin Handrail Yeoman Shield’s new Guardian Twin Handrail was installed as part of the ward refurbishment project recently undertaken at Barnsley Hospital, South Yorkshire.

A 350+ bed hospital built in the 1970’s and serving a quarter of a million people in the Barnsley area, the hospital demands a constant regime of maintenance throughout its premises. Maintaining its high standards, Barnsley Hospital have improved the surroundings and facilities in 6 of the hospital wards, including the discharge unit, female trauma and elective orthopaedic unit. As part of the refurbishment project Yeoman Shield were employed to remove the old bump rail and handrails and replace them with the dual purpose Guardian Twin Handrail to corridors and waiting areas throughout the 6 wards. The twin handrail was supplied with a 50mm dia. PVCu upper handrail for support to those who need it and a lower 125mm deep protection rail which standing

20

slightly forward of the handrail, offers protection to both the wall décor and the handrail itself, minimising on repair and replacement. Supplied in a Pastel Blue colour with contrasting accessories in Pebble Grey the Guardian Twin Handrail from Yeoman Shield was complemented with matching 200mm protection strip and corner protection angles. A member of the nursing staff on the discharge unit commented “Previously down the corridors in this ward we just had a protection rail but now it has been replaced with a system that offers a handrail as well and we have found it a great help to our clients

who attend the unit.” Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust commented that they have worked with Yeoman Shield previously and have always found their products and workmanship to be of a high standard. Contra Vision has introduced a series of glass enhancement inventions over the last 30 years and is best known for their one-way vision window films. Come and visit Surface Design Show 2017 where you will find Contra Vision decorative graphics on the glass entrance doors.

T

he latest invention from the British company offers a permanent solution for one-way vision window graphics which is targeted at architectural applications. Contra Vision® Ceramic XR™ uses a patented method to print two separately coloured layers of ceramic frit dots (other print patterns such as lines can also be incorporated) in exact registration with no overlap, directly onto glass. A simple white on black dot pattern adds solar control, privacy and manifestation to the outside of glass while maintaining a remarkable level of through-vision from inside. Other colours can be used instead of white to provide decoration to building exteriors or internal partitioning glass.

22

Ceramic white dots are effective at reflecting solar energy and glare, while acting to distract the eye and provide privacy to people inside. However, white (or coloured) dots are less appealing when viewed from inside, giving a milky aspect to the world and accentuating greys. Contra Vision® Ceramic XR™ overcomes the problem by superimposing black dots onto the white dots when viewing the glass from inside. Black dots are much less obtrusive to the naked eye and particularly for diameters of 2mm

or less. The product also avoids the unsightly overlap when white on black dots are digitally printed onto glass (exact registration printing cannot be achieved digitally), which can cause a blurred see-through experience from inside. There are already large buildings in London and internationally with Contra Vision® Ceramic XR™ on the windows. Contra Vision can direct you to a licensed manufacturer and they are also seeking new glass companies to partner with. For architects, building contractors and interior designers looking for a less permanent way of transforming glass, Contra Vision’s range of perforated window films offer some exciting possibilities. The films come in a variety of different transparencies to ensure the best balance of privacy, impactful graphics and see-through experience to suit every situation. Traditionally the films have been printed with colourful graphics but they also look attractive in plain white. The films provide solar control benefits and can even be used as a screen for digital projection at night. This was showcased to magnificent scale on the BBC building in Manchester’s

Media City, for an event inspired by commemorations for World War I.

Unlike conventional reflective/ mirrored window films, Contra Vision® Privacy Window Films™ do not block the view outside at night (these other films turn into mirrors when viewed from inside an illuminated room). Kawneer systems help regenerate a city Stoke-on-Trent City Council’s Smithfield scheme features Kawneer glazing systems. Architectural glazing systems from Kawneer feature on a striking new building that is key to the regeneration of a city and was built using a hybrid of traditional and modular construction methods. Kawneer’s AA®100 and AA®110 curtain walling, both zone-drained but with 50mm and 65mm sightlines respectively, complemented by 451PT framing with 50mm sightlines and AA®540 side-hung casement

January 2017 windows, were used on Two Smithfield, the new £15 million office built as part of the first phase of Stokeon-Trent City Council’s Smithfield scheme. Smithfield is the new mixed-use quarter for Stokeon-Trent by developer Genr8, comprising 1.2 million ft2 of office, retail and hotel space. The project will also deliver more than 270,000ft2 of new public realm. The first phase of the Smithfield project was completed in August 2015 and comprises 220,000ft2 of bespoke Grade A office accommodation. One Smithfield has a new customer hub from which the council delivers its primary services and will also house police and other public sector partners. Two Smithfield includes ground-floor commercial units totalling 7,500ft2 and comprises four floors of offices, two of which have already been let to Water Plus. This is a joint venture between two of the country’s biggest water companies, United Utilities and Seven Trent Water. It is bringing over 400 new jobs to the city. The other floors are currently being marketed by Bilfinger GVA The new buildings are set in stunning new public realm, including a new public square which is available as performance and event space. Much of the 125,000ft2 Two Smithfield building consisted of components utilising modular manufacturing, such as precast concrete panels and brickwork cornices and glazed brick elements which were completed off-site. The four-hectare site was historically a manufacturing area for the brick and ceramic industries and was littered with mine shafts and coal seams which required piling. Design of the masterplan was

conceived in 2009 by Aedas RHWL. Designed by frequent Kawneer specifiers Aedas RHWL architects, Two Smithfield’s curtain walling was used for all the windows and external glazing of the project. Associate Alasdair Mealey said: “As the building was procured using a design and build contract, we produced a performance specification at tender stage, which was then assessed by the main contractor (Laing O’Rourke) who proposed the Kawneer curtain walling system. We assessed the proposal along with the project façade consultant and deemed that it met the required criteria for the building. “The Kawneer curtain walling system had to interface with precast concrete primary structure and façade panels. Key items that had to be resolved were weather proofing, thermal bridging and air tightness and the Kawneer system met both the aesthetic and performance requirements.” “The building had a mixed-mode ventilation strategy so the curtain walling system had to incorporate opening lights.” He added: “The quality of what has been delivered, given budget and expectations, is first class. The Kawneer elements at Two Smithfield, which achieved a BREEAM “Excellent” rating, were installed over three months by approved specialist sub-contractor Bennett Architectural Aluminium. Alasdair said: “The glazed elements were a key part of the design, both aesthetically and from a performance standpoint, so the glazing had to be correct. Inherently we aim to specify all products from sustainable sources and our performance specification for the project listed all relevant standards and best practice which the chosen curtain walling system/product had to adhere to. “There was a commitment to optimising the scheme as part of the design process and gaining a clear understanding of what technical solutions worked. The attention to detail and economy of pre-site manufacture is evidence of a very well thought through development.” Bennett director Rob Bennett said: “This new public realm building was designed to reflect the heritage of the potteries whilst using modern methods of off-site construction. Within a fast-track programme we installed curtain wall screens to give the building impressive verticality.” Further phases are now in the pipeline including Three Smithfield (a 50,000ft2 commercial office building) and a new 125-bedroom hotel.

70 new models in Hitachi’s latest heat pump product line-up Completely redesigned to meet the needs of specifiers, installers and homeowners - and utilising common components, common outdoor units and simplified design to benefit both end users and installers - Hitachi’s extended Yutaki air source heat pump product line-up includes a total of 70 new models which are more compact for small installation spaces and are lighter weight for easier handling.

Some of the best seasonal performance figures The introduction of common components and controllers, streamlines product training requirements, reduces the need for carrying multiple spares, and lowers installation and maintenance time. Performances have also been improved, with higher COPs, better seasonal efficiencies and higher capacities. All Yutaki models also be supplied with a new Cooling Kit accessory to enable both heating and cooling modes.

Widest product range

26

Hitachi’s expanded Yutaki air source heat pump product range is one of the widest on the market; the Yutaki range comprises four models, Yutaki-S split, high temperature Yutaki-S80, Monobloc Yutaki-M and the new all-in-one Yutaki-SCombi. Hitachi’s developer-update.co.uk

innovative Yutaki-SCombi integrated solution has been designed specifically for the UK market. The indoor unit has a built-in 200 or 260L stainless steel hot water cylinder, as well as the main hydraulic components such as the pump, filter and back up heater, plus a newly-designed controller. The indoor unit is preplumbed and pre-wired, making the installation simpler with less internal space required.

Single menu for all Yutaki models A new multi-function wired remote control is common to all Yutaki models – meaning a single menu for all Yutaki products with a dedicated installer view, wizard start up configuration and a more intuitive menu for quick and simple commissioning. The alarm history is also logged to assist engineers with troubleshooting. All Hitachi’s Yutaki air source heat pumps are MCS approved, eligible for the domestic and nondomestic RHI and have domestic hot water (DHW) Legionella Protection and a five-year warranty as standard. “As a relatively new player in the UK air source heat pumps market, we’ve been delighted by the very positive feedback we’ve received from visitors to our stands at both Ecobuild and UK Construction Week where we were able to showcase the full Yutaki range of products and the long-term benefits of heat

pumps,” commented Andy Hooper, UK Heating Manager, Johnson Controls – Hitachi Air Conditioning Solutions. For more information please contact the Hitachi direct sales team: Call 01628 585 394 Email aircon.uk@jci-hitachi.com Visit www.hitachiaircon.com or www.hitachiheating.com

RINNAI GOES SOLO IN UK FIRST Rinnai, the leading continuous flow gas fired water heater manufacturer, launches its latest innovation, the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater with storage combined. The Infinity Solo range of condensing and condensing low NOX water heaters is the first Rinnai product for the UK to combine the advanced technology of its wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder all in one. “The preceived necessity for storage type water heating systems is often derived from historical plant room and service deficiencies, for instance gas meter sizes often dictate technology selection in domestic and light commercial applications. Certain legislations are harnessing a like-for-like replacement environment. Therefore Rinnai has developed this technology to enable the appliances to fulfil a wider market need, allowing the benefits of our technology to be felt by a wider audience,” says Associate Director Chris Goggin. “The addition of the Infinity Solo series bolsters our product portfolio and allows Rinnai UK to cater to every application and installer’s needs. They now have access to the advanced technology of the Rinnai water heater, as well as options to combine units in a cascade system with storage - or have the water heater and cylinder combined in one compact footprint in the form of the Infinity Solo.

28

“Because the cylinder is stainless steel it greatly reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, which makes transportation and installation much easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders also feature extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day) which means the customer pays less to maintain the heat within the tank,” says Goggin. Pete Seddon from the Rinnai UK Technical Department adds: “One other benefit of the Solo utilising a stainless steel cylinder, is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time. Infinity Solo is renewables compatible so the customer can, at a later date, integrate a solar thermal or heat pump system with minimal alterations as the units will come pre-fitted with relevant tap ins to accommodate renewable technologies. Rinnai manufactures the energy efficient Infinity range of gas fired continuous flow water heaters and energy saver space heaters. The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters available today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation. Case Study January 2017

Award winning architectural firm, Nord Architects, has unveiled its latest design; a contemporary Urban Hospice intended to create a positive environment while offering support for patients in need of palliative care. Located in the tranquil setting of Frederiksberg, Copenhagen, the vision was to provide a warm and protective atmosphere for up to sixteen patients. Kebony, a beautiful wood recommended by leading architects, was chosen to complement this setting and has subsequently been used throughout the build for the decking, windows and shades, door frames, as well as in outdoor spaces where Kebony clad plant baskets bring elements of nature into the Hospice. Krone Vinduer provided the custom-made windows for this project.

Kebony

32

The project was designed to adapt to the neighbourhood, presenting a combination of spacious views and privacy for patients. Incorporating both curved and linear elements, the design allows for an impressive functional layout, built around a private inner courtyard.

January 2017 Case Study The design-process involved a close collaboration between the client, architects, an engineer and users of the hospice through an extensive dialogue that heavily influenced the final design. Developed in Norway, the patented Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly process, which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural by-product. By polymerising the wood’s cell wall, the softwoods permanently take on the attributes of tropical hardwood including high durability, hardness and dimensional stability. For Kebony, this is an exceptional project which demonstrates the versatility of the material. The silver-grey patina that the wood develops over its elongated life-span has also singled it out as a popular material for architects. When it comes to choosing a wood, there is no reason for architects to compromise on aesthetics, build quality, or sustainability. Morten Rask Gregersen, Partner at NORD Architects, Copenhagen explained, “By considering the needs of the users, clients and neighbours, the Urban Hospice sets a new standard of how to build innovative healthcare projects in urban contexts. We have been continuously impressed by Kebony as a material; its subtle tones are the exact look we envisaged from the offset.” Mona Gøtske, Sales Manager of Kebony Denmark commented, “The Urban Hospice is a fantastic example of Kebony’s versatility with its use in an extensive array of applications from windows and door.

New industry website supports timber decking and cladding markets Intent on driving high standards across the industry, the Timber Decking and Cladding Association (TDCA) has recently launched a comprehensive new information website that will support its members in addition to better informing specifiers, developers and contractors. The only independently run timber decking and cladding resource in the UK, the TDCA is a nonprofit organisation that operates to help drive the market forward; informing and advising users whilst allowing manufacturers and suppliers with high quality products to benefit from two well-regarded accreditation schemes – DeckMark and CladMark. The new website boasts a comprehensive approved supplier search facility, enabling users to drill down into very specific categories to identify suitable suppliers – no other online resource offers such a service for this industry. In depth information regarding timber decking and cladding, case studies, informative publications (free and paid for), a gallery and frequently

34

asked questions all help to enhance this important online resource. Membership of the TDCA comes from all aspects of the supply chain with members including Hoppings Softwood Products, Silva Timber, Arnold Laver, Howarth Timber and Smart Cladding Supplies. In total, there are currently 54 TDCA members plus 83 Approved Retailers. Adam Pulfer, Group Marketing, Development & Technical Director at Hoppings comments: “Membership of the TDCA is valuable to our business. CladMark and DeckMark accreditation helps to elevate our product range in a competitive market, whilst the TDCA offers us a reputable platform to showcase our company credentials. The knowledge and experience of the directors and specialists amongst the TDCA ensures that technical support is always on-hand if required.” In a fragmented market, the TDCA can offer those that use timber decking and cladding peace of mind that they are choosing the right quality and specification of

materials to successfully undertake any project, whether residential or commercial. Furthermore, if problems arise, the TDCA can provide an invaluable Expert Witness / Inspection Service to help resolve disputes. Janet Sycamore, Head of Operations at the TDCA comments: “The new website is part of an ongoing strategy to help our members, small and large, achieve the best possible visibility for their products and services, backed by the solid reputation of the TDCA. We are dealing with enquiries from specifiers, developers and contractors week in, week out and this work really helps to drive up standards in the marketplace and ensure that where timber decking and cladding is concerned, more high quality and correctly specified products are being chosen across the UK.” To view the new TDCA website visit www.tdca.org. uk. CRL shines the spotlight on an eco-timber house in Aberdeenshire AN ENERGY efficient, eco timber house in Aberdeenshire has been crowned as a winner of a campaign that shines the spotlight on self-builders. CRL is delighted to announce that “Heartwood” in Aboyne is one of three winners selected to take part in its Venturous Builds campaign – an inspiring new web series that will showcase Britain’s inspiring self-builders and their construction achievements. Local couple Vic Kirwan, 68, and Teresa Green, 66, have been selected by the structural defects insurance specialist as being truly venturous of spirit. Vic, a retired broadcast engineer, and Teresa, a dental receptionist, commissioned Stommel Haus, a German manufacturer of timber houses, to develop a custom built, energy efficient eco timber house. The campaign, which saw CRL launch its logo into space, aimed to inspire those who have dared to be venturous, brave and unorthodox to share the details of their venturous builds. Winners will have their project filmed and featured on the online show. “Heartwood” was built only using untreated Arctic Heartwood Spruce from FSC certified forests in Finland. The stunning three-bedroom home is insulated using recycled newspaper and recycled glass. With 216 m² living space, there is also a double height dining room from which you can see the vaulted timber ceiling, with views over the beautiful rolling hills of Deeside. The house is heated using a heat pump and ground-breaking technology “Heating with Ice”, which uses ambient heat and solar thermic energy. Vic, who lives in Aboyne, said: “It was always our dream to build a timber home that was highly energy efficient. Construction is almost complete and we look forward to moving into our new home. Thank you to CRL for recognising how unique and energy

efficient Heartwood is.” Barbara Fischer-Clark, of Stommel Haus, said: “Heartwood is a fantastic bespoke home and we are delighted to be named as one of the Venturous Build winners. What sets this property apart is the owners ecocommitment, Vic and Teresa have used ground-breaking technology to ensure it achieves the highest in energy efficiency, while working with a German partner to deliver the home of their dreams.” The filming of these unique projects is now underway, with the first episode of Venturous Builds going live in the coming weeks. The Venturous Builds web series will be hosted by English designer and regeneration expert Wayne Hemingway. CRL CEO Steve Mansour said: “We’ve been blown away by the quality of all of the entries we’ve received for our Venturous Builds campaign. You’ve proved that the UK has some truly venturous self-builders and developers. Thank you to everyone who entered. “However, we were looking for the one-offs, the inspiring, the ingenious construction projects to feature in our Venturous Builds web series. Vic and Teresa clearly demonstrate that they have the courage, determination and an unwavering belief in their ability to create something truly unique. “Venturous builds celebrates the pioneering self-builders who, against

the odds, have dared to dream big and have created the homes of their dreams.” Commenting on the winners, Wayne Hemingway said: “My wife and I designed and built our own home 19 years ago when our kids were young and it has been a true life enhancing experience ever since. “Designing and building your own home is about getting something you really want, rather than getting a house someone else has designed or settling for what’s on the market. Vic and Teresa clearly knew what they wanted when it came to their home and they clearly are revelling in the results. “Venturous Builds celebrates fantastic self-built homes and shows it’s about the spirit of getting on and doing it. It is truly inspiring to witness the people and the love of what they have achieved at the end of the process.” CRL does not shy away from arranging insurance for unusual projects, including new builds, complete or partially completed builds, timber frame constructions, prefabricated properties, mixed-use projects, conversions and insolvent properties. The construction insurance experts recognise that every opportunity is different. With CRL there is no set criteria – just an appetite for adventure. www.c-r-l.com

January 2016 There are more people looking for a home in the UK than there are houses to choose from, according to the latest RICS UK Residential Market Survey. In addition, monthly house buyer demand has risen by 10 per cent since October, outstripping supply. To help address this shortfall, The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show is gearing up to return to the NEC, Birmingham from 23-26 March 2017, sponsored for the first time by Everest, a British company with over 50 years’ experience in double glazed windows, conservatories, doors and more. Over the last couple of years, the UK’s largest self-build exhibition has grown by over 10 per cent and is expected to grow by a further five per cent this year, accommodating over 500 companies which have already signed up from a multitude of sectors including kitchens, heating, flooring and structural systems.

The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show, now sponsored by Everest, returns bigger and better with its largest exhibition ever NEC, Birmingham 23-26 March 2017 38

Nick Noble, deputy managing director of Centaur Home Interest Media, says: “We are expecting more growth in visitor and exhibitor figures at the national event compared to last year’s shows. This prediction is based on our strategic marketing activities, the information density we’re continuously updating and also because of the increasing unmet demand in the UK’s property market. This year, we’ve also signed a key partnership with Everest, a trusted British brand which will support our presence in Birmingham; Glasgow; Surrey; Edinburgh and Harrogate. As a result, our upcoming exhibitions are already attracting companies from all around the UK.”

The Homebuilding & Renovating Shows, part of Centaur’s portfolio, attract exhibitors across a wide range of sectors to cater for all interests. From design; architecture; financial services; kitchens; bathrooms; doors and windows; ventilation; heating; planning permission and much more, companies will offer visitors an overview of the latest products, services and technologies available in the UK market. In addition to soughtafter daily seminars and masterclasses, the exhibition will feature in the Advice Centre various areas of interest for keen self and custom builders. This hub will host the Ask the Expert zone, where people can attend a 15-minute consultation via interactive sessions with some of the UK’s resident property specialists. In addition, it will also provide access to the Ask an Architect area, where chartered specialists from RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) will offer free one-on-one appointments covering topics including building regulations and structural engineer calculations for loft conversions, extensions, internal alterations, new builds and more. For practical recommendations, the Advice Centre will be introducing an Ask a Builder zone, where members of the Federation of Master Builders will be offering visitors tips on effectively finding vetted and approved construction workers to commission for a project. During the event, The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show will also support and raise awareness of a new legal duty within

the Housing and Planning Act 2016, dubbed the ‘Right to Build’, which commenced on 31 October this year. Through this, the local planning authorities in England have to ensure the delivery of sufficient serviced building plots to meet local demand for self-build and custom build homes. Visitors who are at the start of their property ventures will be advised by experts on their legal rights and guided on how to find and apply for a plot of land, a step which will influence significantly the pace of their projects. The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show will take place at NEC, Birmingham, from 23-26 March 2017. There are further events held throughout the country each year. For more information on the upcoming exhibitions, visit www.homebuildingshow. co.uk or contact the sales team on 01527 834418.

Classic with a Modern Twist Interior design like all fashion evolves with the times and so the march of contemporary movement can often seem relentless.

Vicaima Classic K Range door in Pastel Cream

O

f course a sense of tradition and warmth for the past often shapes our thinking with modern decor and so it is hardly surprising that Vicaima has seen a trend for panelled doors making a noticeable return over the past year. In response to this latest vogue, Vicaima have reinvigorated their Classic K range to provide a modern twist to an old favourite with some exciting new finishes. The Vicaima Classic K Range takes elements of shaker styling but with a more upto-date and appealing look for the modern generation of interior panelled doors. Available in 1, 2, 3 and 4 panel designs, together with glazed options, Classic K doors offer a solid construction with real veneer faces, together with white or primed for on-site painting if required. In addition to the ever popular

veneer options, Vicaima have also extended the range to include 6 new factory stained Ash finishes and for that ultra-smooth pure look, a new Satin White finish. All doors are available with fire and security options and can also be supplied as Portaro matching door and frame systems where required. K Range doors are one of three ranges from the Vicaima Classic collection. Classic P, with traditional raised and fielded panels and Classic F, a flat panel design are also available. Download a copy of the new Classic range brochure from the Vicaima website. Kawneer systems help a n

The façade of the new Camb heavily glazed with

Architectural glazing by leading UK aluminium systems manufacturer Kawneer has been specified for an award-winning community church for its ability to match performance with cost-effectiveness. Kawneer’s AA®100 zone-drained curtain walling, AA®540 top-hung casement vents, and series 190 heavy-duty commercial entrance doors and swing doors were selected by Barber Casanovas Ruffles architects for the £5 million Cambridge Community Church (C3). The new church for C3, a vibrant contemporary evangelical church, was built on the site of the previous St Stephens Church on Brookes Road, Cambridge, with a brief to provide a state-of-the-art facility that was large, spacious and welcoming to existing and prospective worshippers. Barber Casanovas Ruffles met the brief designing a three-storey circa 2,900m² steel frame and composite slab building. The main frontage responds to the site and Coldhams Lane

48

roundabout and is curved on plan to respond to the site boundary and public footpath. The site location is on a gateway into Cambridge. The building comprises a 500-seat auditorium, multi-purpose rooms, full catering facilities, offices, break-out areas and a walk-in café for all members of the public. The heavily-glazed building is also faced with brickwork and is expressed with glulam beams in facetted structural bays. Planning requirements dictated high levels of acoustic control to retain noise within the building. The design responded to this requirement and the building completed to suit. Some elements of the old church were salvaged and inserted into the new building. These included the existing church cross from the top of the original church roof and cast concrete lintels with

A Barber Casanovas Ruffles spokesman said: “Kawneer was selected for many reasons. The practice has a long history with the use of the products, their balance of performance, longevity and cost. “The Kawneer systems have a major architectural influence on the project because the frontage needed to be open and inviting and transparent and friendly to encourage parishioners or people with religious beliefs to join the church. The product satisfied the technical performance and the architectural aesthetic required for the scheme. “Aluminium is robust, generally lightweight and recyclable which provides a longevity to the building, an ability to retain the aesthetic over time, to

keep the weight on the structure to a minimum, and is a commercially-available product which suits industry budgets.” The Kawneer systems were installed for main contractor Farrans Construction by specialist subcontractor JPJ Installations who used 150mm flat caps on the curtain walling entrances integrated with additional horizontal pressings around the doors. The C3 Centre won Best Public Service Building in the LABC Building Excellence Awards 2016 for East Anglia. These awards recognise building excellence in the delivery of outstanding construction and workmanship. BCR said: “The client is absolutely delighted with the facility and we as a practice are delighted to have been and continue to be involved with the C3 Centre. We are very proud of the design, the client and contractor teams and the efforts made to ensure the building is a success.”

Sioo Wood Protection – a new wood modification for the UK All too often the appearance of new timber clad buildings is ruined by uneven weathering. It is quite common to see buildings where the shaded areas are still un-weathered whereas the exposed areas have already changed to the silvery-grey colour associated with exposed wood.

The product has been used extensively for cladding and decking protection and has also been used to protect the decks of sailing boats.

For this reason, pictures of timber clad buildings are always taken immediately after construction and not after a year or two! Aesthetics is hugely important in the built environment and this patchy weathering puts people off from specifying timber as a cladding material.

The Sioo system is used as a surface protection system, which is suitable for Use Classes 1, 2, 3.1 and 3.2 according to EN 335 Part 2 (see table). If additional protection is thought necessary for Use Class 3.2 applications, then the Sioo Wood Protection System can be applied to preservative treated wood and to thermally treated wood.

A new product in the UK is the Swedish wood surface modification system, Sioo Wood Protection. This product reacts with the wood to produce a pleasing even grey surface within a few months of application.

When used in interior applications Sioo Wood has the huge advantage of being VOC-free, since it is waterbased and uses silicate technology. Disposal at end of life is not a problem, since the product is non-toxic.

Very importantly, this accelerated weathering takes For further details and information on the Sioo Wood place through a chemical reaction of the Sioo system Protection System please refer to the UK website with the top few millimetres of the wood surface and (www.sioo.co.uk). so it is a permanent change. Because the greying takes place due to the chemical reaction, a completely Use Classes accoridng to EN 335 Part 2 even appearance is obtained, since it is not reliant upon exposure to sunlight for the reaction to take Use Class General Exposure Condition place. The Sioo Wood Protection System uses silicate technology in a two part water-based system. The first stage of the treatment uses a mineral silica solution that is able to penetrate the surface of the wood very efficiently. After the first treatment stage, a silanebased emulsion is applied, which cures by crosslinking to form a flexible silica network and provides a water-proof barrier preventing leaching of the mineral silicate.

50

Over time, the mineral silicate cures by reacting with atmospheric carbon dioxide to precipitate an insoluble silica network within the wood structure.

Hard-landscaping specialists, Bituchem, has recently been involved in the creation of a brand new primary school in Leicestershire. The construction of the new Fossebrook Primary School was completed in mid-July ready to open to Foundation, Year One and Year Two students in September. The school was developed by Leicestershire County Council to provide an additional school for early-year students in the area, and is sponsored by the Discovery Schools Academy Trust. The school was designed by Cornwall-based Kast Architects and MeiLoci landscape architects, who specified Bituchem’s specialist Natratex hard-landscaping material in Cotswold and grey to create an informal demarcated area for the playground. The surfacing works was carried out by Gary Fletcher Surfacing Ltd., who have much experience of Bituchem’s materials. Natratex is Bituchem’s flagship product and has been used for various applications in schools due to its modern aesthetics and safety benefits. The material was selected in grey and Cotswold for Fossebrook School to provide a varied surface for the children to play on, with designated coloured areas adding to the fun of playtime. Melissa Ralph, Landscape Architect at MeiLoci commented, “MeiLoci are very pleased with the Natratex surfacing – a great appearance and finish. Natratex really sets off the new timber school building and the warm tones create a welcoming setting for play. I would thoroughly recommend this product and look forward to working with Bituchem again soon.” Natratex is a material manufactured by Bituchem to the highest standards to offer a seamless, high-performing solution for hard-landscaping. The material is created using naturally-occurring aggregates bound using Bituchem’s specialist clear resin binder to give it the complete compactness that it requires. The Cotswold and

52

grey coloured aggregates offer an aesthetically pleasing alternative to a traditional tarmac finish, with the same durable and long-lasting qualities as asphalt technology. The hard-wearing, compact finish of Natratex has made it a popular choice for school playground applications. The resin binder used to create the smooth surface reduces the likelihood of the material deteriorating and causing potholes or other breakages in the surface so eliminating trip hazards and making the material smoother and safer for young children. Natratex is a very versatile material and can be used for a wide range

of applications, with a variety of colours available to suit all specifications. The material can be used for new constructions, such as Fossebrook School, as well as regeneration and overlay products. Natratex has proved to be a time and cost effective solution as it can be applied quickly and easily using conventional equipment. The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the

need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or

harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.
