Hydrostatic Level Measurement There are many types of level measurement technology. For hydrographic surveys, water table and borehole measurement, hydrostatic pressure measurement is one of the most reliable. Hydrostatic pressure is described as being the pressure exerted by a fluid at equilibrium to a given point within the fluid, due to the force of gravity. A liquid column above the pressure sensor creates hydrostatic pressure, which is a direct indicator of the liquid level. In Europe the standard unit of measurement is metres of water gauge (mWG), also referred to as metres of water column (mWC), or metres

of H2O (mH2O). ESI Technology design and manufacture a range of pressure transmitters for hydrostatic level applications. They are available in a range of diameters and can be calibrated to any unit of measurement. It is also necessary to use a special vented cable so that barometric pressure does not affect the true hydrostatic pressure measurement. Also, a desiccant housing at surface level is required to prevent moisture ingress over time. Stilling tubes and weighted nose cones are also available.

New contamination monitoring system protects steam boilers and enables energy recovery Spirax Sarco has launched a Turbidity Monitoring System for detecting non-conductive contaminants such as fats, oils and greases in condensate, enabling steam system operators to recover substantial amounts of energy that would otherwise be lost. Such contaminants, if accidentally released into condensate, could cause the boiler to overheat, requiring a lengthy shutdown for chemical cleaning, or at worst, causing boiler failure. To eliminate this possibility, some operators may discard hot condensate rather than recycle it as boiler feedwater. With condensate containing around 25% of the useful energy in the original steam, recovering it can substantially reduce water, energy, effluent and chemical treatment costs. The Spirax Sarco Turbidity Monitoring System helps operators to re-use condensate by providing real-time monitoring, raising an alert if contamination rises above a set level, allowing the tainted condensate to be diverted to drain immediately rather than fed into the boiler. The Turbidity Monitoring System can also be used to monitor the quality of other water sources, such as mains, demineralised and reverse osmosis supplies. This makes it suited to applications where water quality is paramount, such as cleaning-in-place and sterilisation-in-place stations in hospitals or food and drink manufacturing. The Turbidity Monitoring System comprises a turbidimeter and a converter. The turbidimeter uses light in the visible and ‘near infrared’ range to penetrate the fluid medium. Four sealed photodiodes detect any light scattered by contaminants. A fifth photodiode measures unscattered light

to provide a reference measurement. This innovative ‘dual channel’ method compensates for colour and other variations in the water to provide more accurate and more reliable results than conventional single channel systems. The converter comes with four fixed and one variable measuring range, allowing operators to tailor turbidity levels to specific process parameters. Two independent setpoints can be configured to determine when the required turbidity thresholds are reached, to control the diverting and discharging of condensate when contamination is detected. The converter has a three-digit LED indicator that displays the turbidity level as a percentage of the selected measuring range. Contamination can be displayed in parts per million (PPM). Steam system operators can also use the system to free up valuable resources as it helps to meet national and international standards for unmanned boiler operation. For example, all shell boilers operated in the European Community must comply with the harmonised standard BS EN 12953, which specifies maximum contamination levels for boilers running unsupervised for periods of 24 to 72 hours. The new Turbidity Monitoring System complements the Spirax Sarco Condensate Contamination Detection (CCD) system that detects conductive contaminants. Steam system operators can now enjoy total protection against conductive and nonconductive contamination entering make-up water and condensate returns to the boiler feedwater system.

Skills Shortage May Boost Automation By Grant Collier British Automation and Robot Association (BARA) The chronic shortage of skills in the engineering sector may force long needed automation in the UK, especially within Britain’s largest industry – the food sector according to the British Automation and Robot Association (BARA). An estimated 170,000 job vacancies will become available in the food sector alone in the run up to 2020 with a rapidly ageing workforce. Grant Collier from BARA said ‘ we have an on-going shortage of skills across industry and even the large blue particularly at apprenticeship level and earn while you learn. This has meant many more companies are interested in looking at automation as a solution. However, this is only part of the answer as it has been proven by an independent study by Metra Martech that robots and factory automation actually create more jobs than they destroy”. Redeployment to more skilled robot operator positions and downstream jobs created by increased capacity and sales is a common result of automation. For example, smart phones are too small to be assembled by human’s and so require robots. The downstream employment created accessories. Whilst this is good for business, it simply perpetuates the recruitment issue. Although the UK has increased its use of automation over the last few years due to greater pay back periods, there is still a lot of work to be done. One of the alternatives to the severe shortage of skilled personnel in the UK is the robot. BARA actively supports a number of initiatives to both help promote the use of automation and address the skills shortage. Initiatives include the governments Automating Manufacturing programme, the Automation Advisory Board and the promotion of apprenticeships through Appetite for Skills and Engineering. The uptake of automation and robots in China and the BRICS nations is taking place at an alarming rate in the face of increased labour costs to remain competitive. It is essential that in order for the UK to retain competitive advantage it takes advantage of the latest robot and automation solutions. The very latest automation and industrial robots can be viewed in action at the largest UK event for this industry wide market – the PPMA show at the NEC, Birmingham from September 1 – October 2.

Then and Now 2007 was a year that most would probably like to forget – The world was in the grip of a global recession. Banks were bailing out banks, “double dip” was the buzz word of the day. Some would argue; it wasn’t the ideal time to start a business? Nevertheless, this didn’t deter three specialists from Essex who were on a mission to do just that! With backgrounds in engineering GRP products, combined experience spanning some 40yrs+ and the compelling drive to succeed - Step On Safety Ltd was established. The aim was to Design, Supply and Install Anti Slip Flooring, GRP and Associated Products throughout the UK and Europe. Today the three Directors reflect on ‘Then and Now’ how hard it was in those early days, and how the industry has changed over the years. Step On Safety’s humble beginnings began in a small Essex workshop with a back office, that the trio shared. “Back then, we had little space and didn’t draw a salary for the first 6 months of trading – it was tough, but we never doubted that we would succeed, once established” claimed Commercial Director Noel Tilbook. He went on to say “The industry was very niche back then, and we would have dealt with just a handful of industries. With demand growing we could see the potential, not just in the UK but worldwide. We employed our first member of staff in late 2007 and started to turn a corner – we doubled our turnover within 12 months!” Those days seem a far cry from the business it is today. Step On Safety substantial growth is impressive and progressive. It is now a multimillion pound award winning company employing nearly 50 staff on multiple sites. The company is a Leading International Supplier of Anti Slip Flooring, GRP and a wide range of associated products. Step On Safety customer principal does not change whether supplying decking strips for the garden patio to GRP ladders for Euro Tunnel. “We continue to design, supply, and install accredited Anti Slip products. What’s change is the customer & industry demand. The internet has helped us reach out to customers internationally. In the past, we would have supplied UK based companies in a handful of industries, but with so many sectors now heavily legislated and more companies looking for alternatives to metal, our products appeal and apply to most industries worldwide.

20|

In recent years, our decking strips have proved extremely popular to resolve slippage issues with garden decking. This has created a new type of customer – the home owner and we will be extending our domestic product range in the coming months” said Steve Houghton Managing Director. Take Steps to Prevent Personal Injury in the workplace It is estimated that slips, trips, and falls account for over half of employee accidents in the workplace and are responsible for a combined estimated number of working days loss of 2 million in the UK alone. Each year slips trips and falls cost the UK economy in excess of £800m. The ‘PI Claim’ culture that has emerged in recent years, has led to more and more business taking steps to reduce injuries with preventative anti slip measures, such as Anti-Slip stair treads, stair nosing and grip rails. GRP #Trending GRP is a fibreglass based product and is fast becoming the preferred choice by many companies, in preference to its metal counterpart. GRP is stronger, lighter, easy to install and with a Euro class 1 industrial fire rating, it’s suitable for even corrosive environments such as water, waste, marine, and chemical. Rotork Site Services

River sluice gates are vitally important for of persistent rainfall, when swift and reliable operation can prevent serious disruption and damage to property. Alternatively, during periods of drought, sluice gates play an important role in maintaining the river level. The automation of a sluice gate is a relatively simple operation but there are many factors including the location of the gates and the availability of power which can turn the exercise into a multi-disciplined task. This was the situation facing Canford School, a co-educational boarding school on the banks of the River Stour in Dorset, when an upgrade was needed to the operation of three river sluice gates equipped with open mesh gearboxes, handwheels and counterbalancing weights attached to each gate by a lifting chain and open pulley. Manual operation of the gates took a long as presenting a potential trapping risk to the operator. Changing weather patterns had also and safety viewpoint. Canford School selected Rotork’s Site Services Division to perform the project. Rotork’s proposal encompassed all aspects of the task, enabling them to organise the total supply of the work together with project management that the extended scope contract enables, by minimising the number of separate subcontractors that need to be employed. Central to the upgrade was the installation of three Rotork IQ electric valve actuators and a local control centre. However, being in a wooded environment some 60 metres distant from the nearest power supply, considerable extra work was also required, demanding a range of mechanical, electrical, civil engineering and project management skills.

required to operate the sluice gates has been dramatically reduced, enabling the school to manage the river level and future there may be scope to further upgrade the operation by installing river level sensors, the signals from which would operate the actuators fully automatically.

By choosing the correct design and specification of valve for a process can save costs, reduce downtimes and minimise product loss or contamination. This is the message Dixon’s Hygienic Product Manager, Ike Topselvi, gives to the Food & Beverage market.

With on-site actuation shop, 3D design, full technical and sales back-up, and BSI approved manufacturing and engineering departments, Dixon can design and produce individual bespoke valves and fabricated configurations to quickly and efficiently solve customer problems.

From choosing the most effective seat material, to the correct mounting considerations of an actuator, Dixon can advise on such factors which can affect the wear and tear on a valve and in turn create problems with contamination and reduce a valve’s life cycle.

Valves for non Hygienic Application – A Case Study

Dixon’s entire range of high quality ball and butterfly valves can be actuated to customer specification with a range of stocked accessories that includes limit switches, solenoids and positioners. All actuators have been type-tested to 1,000,000 cycles. Full technical and sales support is available from their qualified technical sales team to ensure specification of the most suitable valve for your process.

The Dixon range of valves is not restricted to hygienic applications. Dixon also offers industrial actuated valves for use within many process industries. In some cases a hygienic valve can be used in a multitude of applications not first thought. Sometimes the best solution to a process problem can be found outside of its traditional industry supply base.

Dixon Hygienic have offered solutions to numerous industries. In one instance a paint manufacturer required a solution for moving paint which was accumulating in the void behind the ball on its non-encapsulated SVF ball valves. On being presented with Dixon offers same day and next day delivery the problem Dixon Hygienic investigated on most standard actuated valves and and found that the titanium dioxide additive custom fabrications subject to customer within the paint was causing premature requirements. failure of the standard ball valves being used. The paint manufacturer had made

the decision to remove ball valves from the production line completely until Dixon came up with the solution that the existing valve supplier had overlooked. Not being dissuaded by the fact that this was not a traditional hygienic valve application, Dixon Hygienic developed a successful solution. Analysing the current industrial ball valve being used, it was determined that the best solution would include an encapsulated ball valve. This would minimise titanium dioxide paint migration between the ball and valve body. Dixon concluded that a seal with higher abrasion resistance would be beneficial due to the nature of the titanium. Additionally the size of the actuator was increased to produce more torque. This ensured valve rotation if the process fluid began to solidify. Therefore in most cases a solution is readily available, if not within existing expertise, it may be from another industry. But it all starts with detailed analysis and by aligning Dixon Group with solution partners that can provide different industry perspectives. Cleaning & Hygiene

GRAYMONT’S ESPs BENEFIT FROM PRIMASONICS ACOUSTIC CLEANERS Graymont is the second largest producer of lime in North America, with close to 20 locations serving key market regions across Canada and the United States.

Their Superior Plant, located on the Lake Superior waterfront in Wisconsin, is ideally positioned to service the upper Midwestern states and Central Canada. Three types of limestone are calcined at this facility to produce high calcium quicklime, high calcium hydrated lime, dolomitic quicklime and PCC quicklime. The Superior plant has 5 kiln lines that need to be shut down periodically for cleaning and maintenance. Cleaning of the ESPs in particular was a growing concern as it is a manual operation that entails employees entering the bottom hopper to hammer on the individual plates. This risk to the employees being 28|

below the plates where Lime dust would fall down on them which can burn areas of exposed skin. With a typical cleaning time of 16 hours for three employees, wearing full faced respirators with dust continuously falling on them, Graymont’s Process Engineer, Bill Kaptonak cleaning solution that would reduce both the risk and exposure factors. As Bill was unfamiliar with acoustic cleaners, Primasonics outlined their monthly Rental Plan which opportunity to try them on one ESP before committing to purchase. Initially two acoustic cleaners were rented and installed in

www.primasonics.com sound@primasonics.com late 2012. The result was a dramatically cleaner ESP. Clean up time was reduced to less than 8 hours with more of the cleaning at the top of the ESP as opposed to the bottom, making it safer for the workers as the dust falls below them. The acoustic cleaners also improved the performance of the ESP while it was online. Their ability to knock down more dust during operation has improved the environmental performance of the ESP. This has stabilized the operation by minimizing any tendency toward opacity issues when the kiln process changes. This successful trial prompted Graymont to purchase a total of six acoustic cleaners to be installed on their other Kilns.

Safe, mess-free cleaning with Kärcher Ice Blasters

A

s the world’s leading cleaning technology provider, Kärcher has both the products and the knowhow to provide the very best cleaning solutions for a wide variety of industrial environments. Alongside its renowned ranges of traditional industrial cleaning machines such as parts washers, vacuum cleaners, hot water pressure washers and stationary high-pressure cleaners, Kärcher has developed highly innovative blast cleaning products to improve safety, reduce costs, and offer new levels of blast cleaning standards. Kärcher ‘s Ice Blaster range offers a portable, non-aggressive, but thorough method of cleaning surfaces, tools, moulds and machines without causing damage to the substrate or the environment. The

30|

machines can be used in indoor and outdoor areas and do not require chemicals. The process is particularly suited to environments where machine cleaning and maintenance is downtimes and costs. The system uses dry ice pellets kept at -79ºC, injected into a jet of compressed air, accelerated to speeds at the surface to be cleaned. The abrupt cooling of the surface causes cracks in the top layer. The dry ice pellets penetrate these cracks and sublimate (turn into a gas without becoming a liquid) instantly, thus lifting the contaminant from the surface, before returning to the atmosphere as CO2 gas leaving only

the contaminant behind. Unlike sand blasting, ice blasting keeps surface abrasion to a minimum. As cleaning with dry ice is performed without chemicals or detergents, and leaves no waste water, it is environmentally friendly and can even be used in areas where cleaning with water is prohibited or inconvenient. This superb technology is available Ice Blaster specialists, all of whom can offer expert advice on your ice blasting requirements. blasting can make a difference to nearest specialist, call 01295 752 142, email cleaning@karcher.co.uk or visit www.karcher.co.uk

Weber 4050 Applicator Bar Code Scan System The Weber 4050P Pallet Applicator is designed to label pallets on two adjacent sides without having to stop the pallet. This differentiates the system from other Pallet Applicators in the market and makes the 4050P one of the fastest systems available capable of labelling up to 420 pallets per hour.

This label will then be passed onto the tamp pad and will be read as it moves past the scanner – If the codes are readable then the process continues as normal. If incorrect the label will be applied and the Re-Print function will activate again. If there are three consecutive failures (of a number set by the customer) then the machine will stop and error messages will be sent.

However with Pallet Labelling there is sometimes the requirement to validate that the barcodes printed are able to be scanned and also that the label has been applied to the product. The 4050P Pallet Applicator is able to meet these criteria, however in cases where this is required the pallet has to be stopped to ensure that if incorrect labels are printed then they can be re-printed and applied to the product. The way in which the 4050P completes these processes is as follows: Weber position a Bar Code Scanner in the gap between Print Engine and Tamp Pad. This scanner will read the barcodes as the label passes onto the tamp pad. The Pallet is stopped in the correct position awaiting labelling. If the bar codes read correctly then the labelling process takes place as normal. If any of the bar codes are not correct then the label will be applied to the product but no signal will be sent to move the pallet to the next position or along the conveyor. Instead the scan of failure will instigate a Re-Print Function of the system whereby the last label printed will be re-printed. 32|

Once a label has been printed and is positioned on the Tamp Pad, the “Label on Pad” sensor is activated. This shows that a label has been printed and is ready to be applied. If there is a failure in the vacuum and the label falls off the pad before application to the pallet then the sensor will send an error message to alert that there is a problem with the label whereby the operator can reset the machine and resolve any issues. The Label is applied to the product using a “Gimbal” or spring loaded Tamp Pad which means that there is contact between the Tamp Pad and Product. It is only at the point when the Tamp Pad touches the product that the Label On Pad Sensor is de activated showing that the label has been applied to the product.

Marking - indelibly mark almost any material, with high speed and quality, without any consumables (no inks or solvents). Metal Welding – butt and overlap welding of most common metals with minimum heat input and therefore low distortion. Autogenous welds maintain the characteristics of the original material. Plastic Welding – create hermetic, pressure tight seams with the base strength of the parent polymer. High quality visual appearance with no deformation on the material surface. Cladding – fuse a layer of corrosion or wear resistant material onto a part to greatly increase its service life and reduce costs. Micromachining - permits the milling, drilling and cutting of a wide range of materials with feature sizes down to the micron (µm) scale. Versatility in laser drilling allows circular, square and conical holes with positive or negative tapers to be produced. Cutting – this non-contact process readily cuts flexible parts, thin films and webs (on-the-fly) without challenging clamping or fixturing issues.

Laser Lines is housed in a purpose built 10,000 sq. ft. facility in Banbury, Oxfordshire. We operate an extensive applications laboratory which is fitted with several laser systems of different wavelengths and configurations, and also diagnostic instruments and microscopes. A STEP IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION: Advancements in the safety footwear market According to the latest Labour Force Survey (LFS) rates of selfreported workplace non-fatal injury, slips, trips and falls still account for over half of reported major injuries to employees. This has been a highlighted problem in the workplace, with an average of 54% of major injuries attributed to this one cause in the past 5 years, and an estimated cost to society of £800 million per year here in the UK. One company working hard to tackle this problem is safety equipment and training specialist, Safety Technology Ltd. Their recent launch of a new boot range, which uses innovative technologies, has made major advancements in the protective footwear market. This new collection has been manufactured by German footwear experts STEITZ Secura® and now, after extensive research and testing, is being introduced in to the UK market for the first time. Tackling Common Problems… After first identifying common problems associated with work place safety, STEITZ Secura® then set about developing a range of protective footwear to directly combat them.

The honeycomb structure that forms the VARIO® module provides a soft cushioning effect which is fitted according to the individuals preference. Through this new development in footwear technology, the pressure located in the shoe is naturally reduced. Another common problem which can be a major contributor to slips, trips and falls in the work place is miss-fitting shoes. In a study conducted by STEITZ Secura®, it was shown that 73.7% of participants had a foot width that was not optimally fitted in a standard shoe width. A shoe fitted too tightly, or too loosely has been proven to have serious long term health implications, as well as severe consequences for individual’s safety. Tackling this problem head on STEITZ Secura® has created a multiple-width system for their new footwear range. This unique fitting option ensures optimal fit in length and width, and of course comfort, with models made in 4 sizes depending on shoe length. Moving forward…

One major problem identified, evident in many work environments, is the amount of time spent on hard industrial floors, placing an unnatural and high amount of pressure upon the skeleton and the sole of the foot, which can in turn lead to fore foot health problems. After extensive studies into forefoot shock absorption, STEITZ Secura® developed the VARIO® Heel Shock Absorption system.

46|

This new innovative selection of footwear has now been launched into the UK market by Safety Technology Ltd, with the aim of tackling safety in the workplace head on. For more information on the range visit www.safetytechnology.co.uk, or contact them directly on (01873) 840 036 or email info@safetytechnology.co.uk.

Our Industry: The static control industry in 2000, at the end of the century, would have been recognisable to someone coming from 1960. It used high voltage AC technology in similar ways, with big external transformers. Changes started to come with the increasing use of DC high voltage supported by power electronics at reasonable prices. This was encouraged by progress in the electronics industry where static control began to be taken seriously. For us the new era started in 2003 with the introduction of long range pulsed DC – our Ionstorm Bar became the most powerful long range static eliminator available. Since then there has been relentless progress in developing DC technology, which allows greater performance and control, without high voltage cables and external transformers. The added benefit is that DC Static Eliminators can be powered by 24V DC instead of main power, which is appreciated by OEMs and end-users alike. We are spending 15% of our turnover on R&D to maintain our 20% growth rate. This is higher than the industry average, but seems to be working judged by the flow of new products. It is difficult finding good electronics engineers. To overcome this problem in 2013 we opened a new development laboratory in Bristol, to complement our operations in Bampton, which is too rustic for many young graduates.

A More Specific Example: Winders and Slitter Rewinders Winders processing polymeric products have always had static electricity problems. In the 1960s the typical solution was to use short range AC static eliminators on centre winders and ionised air blowers on winders with lay-on rollers. The speed of slitter rewinders has increased dramatically – well beyond the capability of these older static eliminators. Materials now are also more static generative and more difficult to neutralise because of their multi-layer structure. Customers are also making more difficult demands – such as ensuring that the charge in the rewind reels is less than 1000V. The modern answer is to use static eliminators using DC technology. Launched in 2012 the Fraser 3024 Static Eliminator is probably the best selling static eliminator on slitter rewinders in Europe. It has been independently tested for reducing a 50kV charge to below 1kV at speeds in excess of 1000m/min. The 3024 Bar is equally suitable for centre winders, winders with lay-on rollers and even turret rewinders.

ATEX Certified Applications Coaters, laminators and gravure printers which use combustible solvents are in a much better position now than 50 years ago. Today`s ATEX certified static eliminators are much better in every way. They are more powerful, more compact and considerably lower in cost. Fraser offers active and also passive static eliminators which are ATEX certified. We also make an ATEX certified static meter for investigating charges in hazardous areas.
