mk Conveyor Technology helps ensure Baby Strollers are up to the Job! mk were asked to design a test rig for baby strollers that would satisfy the test criteria of the TUV safety regulations. This was achieved by simulating different ground conditions with standardised obstacles for testing baby strollers. The adjustable speed of the conveyor belt should be up to 10 km/h (170 m/min), which corresponds to a moderate jogging speed. The total load is a maximum of 150 kg. Features of this test rig include the following: mkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s GUF-P 2004 conveyor was equipped with a timing belt drive and balanced rollers. A wire hook connection ensures easy belt change. Standardised obstacles were screwed onto the belt.

Visual Checking of Liquid Flow Helps Ensure Operational Safety Titan Enterprises has launched a new range of stainless steel and aluminium oval gear flow meters with a clear acrylic top enabling users to visually check the flow as well as monitoring the flow output. The ability to visually check flowing liquid, from the visible rotation of the gears, has particular safety of operation benefits with viscous fluids such as lubricating oils. Titan Enterprises oval gear (OG) flowmeters with acrylic top are available in sizes from 1/4-inch to 1-inch diameter, for flows between 1ml/min and 100l/min. Tips for Selecting a Flowmeter Drawing upon over 40 years of experience, Trevor Foster â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an internationally recognised authority in flow meter technology and applications offers sound, non-commercial advice on what to consider when selecting, implementing and maintaining a flowmeter system.

Consider why you might need a flow meter. Common applications for a flowmeter might be monitoring the amount of fluid travelling through a pipe/ vessel in real-time or monitoring and controlling the total throughput volume (totalising). If a simple, one-off test is all that is required, a container to flow the liquid into, a set of scales and a stopwatch may give the accuracy needed. Similarly, flow rate could be estimated by using a simple float in a tapered tube, but this would entail the inconvenience of constant local observation. Some companies hire flowmeters and this could be an economic option for short term monitoring applications. A flowmeter offers an accurate, configurable solution which can monitor, record and be used as a method of control with minimal attention once programmed.

Consider the total life cost of the installation. Initial purchase price is only one aspect of the costs of running a flowmeter. A simple turbine will be inexpensive to purchase and install but the true costs may need to be considered over several years of operation. How often will your production line have to be down while that simple turbine is being re-calibrated? It may well be that a non-intrusive solid state flow meter will be more cost effective in the long term despite the initial financial outlay. In situations where a consumer product, with a design life of only a few thousand hours, incorporates a flowmeter - a more inexpensive device would be appropriate. It is important to remember that flowmeter selection is part of your overall project design and costing.

Instruments are used to test and measure processes against an agreed specification or tolerance in all industries. In order to maintain confidence in these processes any test and measurement instruments which are used to monitor or measure should be ‘Calibrated’. BS EN ISO 9001:2008 Clause 7.6 – Control of monitoring and measuring equipment, states that in order to ensure valid results equipment must be calibrated or verified against measurement standards which are traceable to international or national measurement standards. To provide assurance in the accuracy of calibration results, the measurements must demonstrate traceability. Calibrations should be undertaken by a laboratory which has been independently accredited by an approved third party, or by using equipment with values traceable to national and international standards. Traceability can be defined as a ‘chain’ of comparative measurements, with the final ‘link in the chain’ being provided by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM). Your instrument

Quantum Controls Boosts Energy Savings for Plastic Recycling Company Quantum Controls have helped Regain Polymers of Castleford, West Yorkshire convert their plastic extruder machine from DC motor to a new ABB AC Motor and Variable Speed Drive, creating an annual energy cost saving of £49,000. Regain Polymers is one of the largest plastic recycling companies in the UK, currently recycling around 50,000 tonnes of plastic per year. The company turns waste plastic materials such as polypropylene, high density polyethylene and polystyrene into new pellets which are then used to produce products such as water pipes and wheelie bins. The company’s production is based on seven extruder lines. As part of its programme to cut energy use and carbon emissions, it had identified one of its extruder lines as a prime candidate for improvement. This was based on a 400 kW DC motor and the company wanted to convert it to AC operation. The conversion to AC will also eliminate the need to replace the DC brushes every three months, resulting in a saving of a further £2,500 a year. As an ABB Drives Alliance member, Quantum Controls were asked to investigate the extruder for possible conversion to AC. Quantum installed a data logger which established that the daytime electricity costs for the DC motor were £424. Quantum fitted a 400 kW ABB AC 4 pole squirrel cage motor and variable-speed drive, together with a new mains cable. Following the installation of the AC motor and drive, energy costs dropped to £260 per day, a saving of around £163 based on a 24 hour a day production.
