New Automated Cutter Means Increased Productivity for Formaplex To cope with increased demand for high quality composite components Formaplex Ltd, has just installed a new Blackman and White Genesis high speed automated CNC cutting machine.
The Hampshire-based dynamic manufacturing group employs over and specialises in the manufacture of lightweight components and tooling for the automotive, aerospace, defence, F1 and commercial industries. “As with many companies supplying high tech industries such as motorsport and aerospace, we have experienced a huge growth in the demand for composite materials to both reduce weight and increase strength” commented Joe Mason, Composites Production and glass pre-preg material was done manually using knives and rulers, but as this was very labour intensive and time consuming, it was essential that we automate

Nominally 2.8 metres in length, the bed is conveyorised so it can also cope with larger lengths of materials. Intuitive software For further information visit www.blackmanandwhite.com
Mason added, “The new automated cutter not only cuts considerably faster than by hand, but it also cuts intricate shapes with a very high degree of accuracy. Composite materials are expensive, and being able to nest patterns means we can now make the best use of materials, minimise wastage and cut costs. It means we can increase productivity and ensure a high degree of consistency so that every component we manufacture will meet the very high standards of quality that is expected from a world-class manufacturer.”

£3.5 MILLION AMAZON ORDER IS LARGEST EVER FOR STERTIL DOCK PRODUCTS Stertil Dock Products has won its largest ever order to supply Combilok vehicle restraint systems for 14 Amazon sites throughout Europe. Before securing the contract, Stertil Dock Products was asked to participate in exhaustive trials, in competition with other manufacturers, at Amazon sites in the UK, France and Germany. The trials were highly successful in proving the performance and reliability of the Combilok across a whole range of lorries and vans including double deck trailers. Consequently, Amazon placed an order, with a contract value of £3.5 million, covering the supply and installation of more than 500 Combilok systems. The Combilok was developed exclusively to reduce the risk of unintentional vehicle movement on loading bays and by holding vehicles in one place until loading or unloading is completed. TRACKS LEAD TO LONDON
ExCeL London has been chosen as the venue for Infrarail 2016. The UK’s showcase event for railway infrastructure equipment, products and services will take place at the capital’s premier exhibition centre from 12 to 14 April next year, again bringing together leading suppliers and the industry’s decision makers and buyers.
access from London Underground’s Jubilee Line and London City Airport. Parking is available for 3,700 cars, and there are six onsite hotels and numerous bars and restaurants. ExCeL recently won the coveted ‘Best UK Conference Venue’ and ‘Exhibition Venue of the Year’ awards for an unprecedented third time.
London is served by main line and urban rail networks that rank among the world’s densest and busiest. Continuing high levels of investment in these systems by Transport for London and by government at a national level add to a strong case for staging this eleventh Infrarail in the capital, according to show organiser Mack Brooks Exhibitions.
Infrarail will again provide a valuable opportunity to develop new business contacts. The show will be colocated with CITE - the Civil Infrastructure & Technology Exhibition. CITE 2016 will shine the spotlight on wider transport, utilities and communications networks to form a perfect partner event for Infrarail. Together the two shows will form the UK’s largest exhibition dedicated to public infrastructure.
“Locating Infrarail in London provides a good balance with Railtex at the NEC in Birmingham”, says Kirsten Whitehouse, exhibition manager at Mack Brooks for both events. “It will enable exhibitors to introduce their products and capabilities to the widest range of potential customers in the capital and the south of the country, as well as to visiting industry professionals from the rest of the UK and beyond.” Situated in a stunning waterfront location, ExCeL London now hosts many of the UK’s leading consumer and trade shows. Located in the capital’s Royal Docks and within easy reach of central London, the venue is served by three Docklands Light Railway stations and has easy

together Infrarail and CITE attracted some 6,600 visitors and more than 200 top rail infrastructure companies took part in the rail show. Next year’s Infrarail will incorporate the features that have contributed to the continuing success of the show – the latest in rail infrastructure technology plus keynote presentations from industry CITE Awards, and much more. Regular visits to www. infrarail.com will keep you up to date with the latest plans for the show. Contact kirsten.whitehouse@mackbrooks. co.uk for further information.

HYGIENIC SAFETY: PrIorITY NumbEr oNE Hygienic safety is priority number one in the food and beverage system. HARTING Technology Group has launched the connector series Han® F+B, that eliminates existing limitations in system design while making new approaches possible. The food industry imposes extremely demanding requirements. As a result, production and packaging is divided into three zones: the product contact area, the splash zone, and the productfree zone. The product-free zone is the area of the plant where products are already packed and as a result are protected against contamination. Existing HARTING connectivity products can be used here, and as such there are no restrictions with respect to plant and system design. However, the same does not hold true for the product contact area and splash zone. Here, all surfaces must with no gaps or spaces, failing which dirt pockets would develop and food residues might become trapped. This could, in turn, create an unacceptable bacterial load in the plant. In

mandatory. Plants are often cleaned with high pressure and steam cleaners containing aggressive acid or alkaline-based cleaning agents, which means that standard components are not suitable for use.
SPECIAL SOLUTION FOR THE FOOD INDUSTRY HARTING connectors from the new Han® F+B range have been designed in an environmentally optimised manner for the vicinity surrounding the splash area. The patented design is characterised by a large radius and smooth surfaces, in accordance with EHEDG guidelines, making it easy to clean with standards ISO 14 159 and DIN EN 1672-2.

The material consists of polypropylene plastic, which is resistant to ECOLABapproved. It is resistant to hot and cold temperatures ranging from -40°C to +125°C allowing for application in a range of environments. All soft product components are blue, which enables quality monitoring camera systems to consistently and reliably detect detached sub-components. Both the IP67 and IP69K protection classes and surface properties of the HARTING Han® F+B connector can withstand the longterm impact of daily cleaning agents.
VERSATILITY OF USE The central advantage of the Han® F+B connector lies in its versatility in for the transmission of bus systems, signals and power contacts up to 40 amps. This large portfolio is rounded termination technologies.
This versatility opens up completely new possibilities in the design of previously hard-wired plant components. winders, exhaust systems, heating and cooling units can be produced in pluggable design. In future, machine units will be able to be modularly designed. Downtime is being drastically reduced by “plug and play” components, and reduced commissioning times are cutting costs.

owntime is a constant blight on manufacturers. It’s costly, time consuming and stressful. Despite this, it’s amazing how many manufacturers don’t have a plan in place for their critical parts especially when equipment, like variable speed drives and HMIs, is prone to degrading with age increasing the likelihood of them breaking down. At Northern Industrial, one of the UK’s longest established providers of automation parts and repairs, faulty HMIs and drives are repaired on a daily basis. “We see all types of faults on our customer’s drives and HMIs and many of them are preventable” Said David Lenehan, Managing Director of Northern Industrial. “Unfortunately many people continue to wait for failure ignoring the initial signs before tackling a problem which results in breakdowns. There are steps you can take to keep downtime to a minimum.”
Preventative maintenance The old adage “prevention is better it comes to industrial automation equipment like HMIs and variable speed drives. Components inside them, such as capacitors and transformers, degrade with age reducing reliability. A scheduled preventative maintenance service

from a good service provider will replace all of these components to prolong lifespan and reduce unscheduled downtime. With a HMI there’s some things you can look out for that will let you know when it is time for a service.
Telltale signs that HMI failure is imminent The great thing about HMIs is they start to let us know when they are experiencing problems rather than us by surprise. This usually means you can still use them for a short while and decommission them when it is more convenient, giving you time to get a spare in place for example. Some of the common warning signs you can look out for include; dim display/loss of brightness, the HMI taking longer to come on each time you power it touch screen becoming unresponsive in sections.
Complete HMI support Northern Industrial can also backup the programs and parameters on items like HMIs and drives as a standard part of their repair service, which is available as a 48 hour express or 15 day standard turnaround. Check up front prices on thousands repairs at www.nicontrols.com

Atlas Copco delivers 50 tonne compressed air package Atlas Copco Compressors has completed delivery of a large custom designed main air compressor package, weighing approximately 50 tonnes, to Baku, Azerbaijan for installation on a platform Mounted on a single skid and comprised of three ZR500 water cooled screw compressors, a closed circuit water cooling system, three heatless dryers and separate ZT110 black start screw compressor for emergencies, the package was purpose designed, built and fully tested at Atlas Copco’s Systems Hemel Hempstead workshop in the UK, one of the company’s six global competence centres that create and assemble bespoke compressed air and nitrogen generation installations primarily for the oil and gas industry. The physical size of the main air compressor package, which is over 11m long, 6m wide and 3.75m high, meant it had to be delivered in a reinforced crate along with and handling at its destination. This brought the total size was moved from the workshop using a 12 tonne fork lift truck onto the back of a special heavy load bearing lorry that travelled via police escort to Immingham docks for shipping to Baku. During transit, the package will then travel via canal, timed to avoid freezing weather conditions, from the Black Sea into the Caspian Sea for installation on the platform. it will be installed, the main air compressor package has been weatherproofed, winterised and built to withstand harsh environmental conditions including high wind speeds of up to 45 metres per second and ambient air temperatures ranging from -7°C to +40°C at high relative humidity. Designed for continuous 24hr operation, the package was tested to withstand inertial accelerations as a result of seismic activity and is also soundproofed to operate with low noise emissions. Paul Frost, Manager of Systems Hemel Hempstead commented: “The completion of this latest package is an excellent example of the technical expertise and cutting edge facilities we are able to deploy at Systems Hemel Hempstead, which has attracted increased demand from the global oil and gas industry in recent years. For this project we had to take several challenging design and environmental considerations into account to ensure we within budget.” Once installed, the main air compressor package will provide instrument air for pneumatic controls and actuation Under normal operating conditions, two of the main air compressors will be running continuously to provide 100% of the platform’s instrument air requirements. However, in the event of non-availability of one of the compressors,
46|
the third, standby compressor, will start and provide the necessary capacity. In the event of a power failure and loss of the main air compressor package, the black start air compressor, which is supplied by the platform’s emergency power generator, will start and provide the minimum compressed air needed to safely shutdown the platform operations. Atlas Copco’s Systems Hemel Hempstead custom engineering workshop recently underwent a major expansion following a £680,000 (€870,000) upgrade to strengthen its world-class credentials. The workshop 12m x 15m covered test area has also been built, adding a valuable additional space for testing large engineered packages in any weather. Packages can be moved around in the workshop more easily thanks to the provision of two new 5-tonne cranes, trackways and controls, which complement three existing cranes. Other new additions include two modern spray paint booths to replace the original single unit and a new grit blast facility, meaning These additions increase working capacity and throughput, shortening lead times to the customer.

The new Oleostatic Gold belts are more reliable due to their transmission capacity being increased by up to 30% compared with standard oleostatic belts. They are available in a wide range of sizes and sections (classic Z, A, B, C and narrow SPZ, SPA, SPB, SPC) to meet every transmission requirement or to and easily. They ensure vibrationfree transmission, have a low noise level and are made of a halogen-free compound in compliance with the ISO standard 1813.
