Fashion Logistics Perfection

A new logistics center by SSI Schaefer has recently become operational for omni-channel distribution by the Finnish Stockmann Group, one of the leading retail companies in Scandinavia and the Baltics. A combination of hanging and flat goods and a design concept based on Schaefer’s 3D-MATRIX Solution® facilitates the order processing of both over-thecounter and online trade from one single distribution facility.

he capacities of four former warehouse locations were consolidated in the new facility at Tuusula. It houses about 100,000 different products – more than 1.8 million individual items in total. “All types of articles – from large products to cosmetics and decorative items to hanging textile goods – are now bundled together in one location for every distribution channel,” explains Stockmann’s Logistics Manager, Elina Laine. “The distribution centre is the central component of our omni-channel strategy.” In the middle of October, Stockmann held its thirtieth “Hullut Päivät” – literally ‘Crazy Days’ – five-day discount event. In this period, 1.4 million items were sold at the Group’s stores, including the flagship store in Helsinki. With more than 50,000 m² of retail space over eight floors, it is the largest department store in Finland and one of the largest in Europe. Over one million customers also visited the online shop during this period, with shoppers unpacking their internet orders the very next day. To overcome seasonal peaks like these and to build a firm foundation for further growth and the expansion of the firm’s operations, Stockmann in recent years completely overhauled its corporate logistics and became geared towards omni-channeling. The new operation is based on a system concept with the latest, future-proof automation components, a picking strategy according to the goods-to-person principle and a high-performance warehouse management system that coordinates the completion of orders for the different distribution

channels. “An intelligent material flow concept, innovative system technology and attractive aftersales services for reliably supplying all distribution channels from a single installation,” are how Laine explains the decision to opt for SSI Schaefer. “SSI Schaefer offered us a thoroughly coherent overall package for long-term efficiency and investment security.” SSI Schaefer developed a solution that organises the complex order handling processes into clear structures. By considering how to make the most efficient use of the 29,000 m² of warehouse space available, the automation components and IT installed guarantee the requisite performance levels. Furthermore, a five-strong team of technicians – provided on location and round the clock as part of SSI Resident Maintenance® concept – ensure for the continual maintenance and constant availability of the installation. The centerpiece of the concept is a shuttle system with 130,500 bin storage locations for doubledeep storage. The warehouse was designed according to SSI Schaefer’s 3D-MATRIX Solution®. Forty-five shuttle lifts and 72 multilevel Navette shuttles guarantee the maximum availability and efficiency of the processes. “We were already looking for a shuttle solution when we issued the call for tenders,” adds Logistics Manager, Laine. “The modular and scalable solution concept from SSI Schaefer impressed us immediately, as it provides our business with that allimportant flexibility.” Furthermore, a pallet rack warehouse with 7,800 storage locations to replenish picking locations and a three-level

hanging goods warehouse for more than 350,000 garments characterise the installation’s design. “The material flows for store and eCommerce orders had been consistently separated due to the different shipment packaging and transport service providers,” says Rami Syrjä, Sales Manager for SSI Schaefer in Finland. “Coordinating this, structuring it according to staging times and different priorities and maintaining this all in perfect balance across a single installation presents a considerable challenge for the design of the warehouse management system.” Stockmann opted for SSI Schaefer’s WAMAS® logistics software. This is responsible for stock management, process control for a coordinated order completion and also offers complete transparency via its visualisation components. The system as a whole is currently designed to have a performance of 55,000 order items with 180,000 articles per day. The innovative concept has already proven itself: “In the new distribution centre we are now able to complete orders for department stores and online orders much more quickly and transparently than before,” summarises Stockmann’s Logistics Manager, Laine. “The thoroughly scalable system concept also offers us a high degree of flexibility for our variable range of articles and leeway for further growth. SSI Schaefer’s solution has thoroughly impressed us.”

Exploring a new solution to the problems caused by conventional cleaning and metal pretreatment systems in product finishing. Enviro Tech Surface Technologies looks at some of the traditional problems associated with solvent and aqueous degreasing prior to painting and powder coating and explains how the DriPHOS® option can offer a viable alternative to conventional processes. The DriPHOS® surface treatment process has evolved to produce a revolution in metal finishing. DriPHOS® the start of a great finish

What causes this to happen?

Traditionally jobbing painters and/or manufacturers of parts who have to subsequently degrease and then paint or powder coat have had the same problems that they have learnt to live with. These include: reject rates of between 3 - 8% after painting; residues of particulate that require further manual wiping after degreasing and prior to painting; paint schemes lifting or blistering; corrosion forming under painted areas; parts slowing down the production because the drying oven takes an excessively long time to dry sufficiently; or parts simply going rusty during the dwell time between cleaning and subsequent painting. Finally, when using conventional solvents, long dwell times whilst the components cool down to a temperature that can take the paint prior to curing in the oven. More recently, classification of Trichloroethylene has also caused concern. These and others must sound familiar to you.

Obviously a lot of factors come to mind but generally they fall into four main areas as follows: •

Retained moisture or solvent under the surface of crimped areas, spot welds and seams etc

No protection from rusting whilst awaiting painting

Why does this happen? To try to simplify this we have broken it down into aqueous cleaning and solvent cleaning with some of the reasons under each of the four headings above as follows:

All of the above are avoidable but may mean tighter controls and different process methods are required. The way the components are loaded is vitally important as overlapping can prevent access for both the aqueous and solvent processes. Unfortunately most paint shop managers will not feel they can afford the time to load more carefully even when they realise the advantages.

What can be used as an alternative? The answer is DriPHOS® the new single tank surface treatment process.

What is DriPHOS®? It is a solvent-based degreasing and pretreatment process. Based on a well-tried and tested blend of solvents and sophisticated additives and surface activators, DriPHOS® really is the quickest, most economical answer to degreasing and surface treatment problems. Operating at only 42°C the parts come out of the process totally clean, dry and with a crystalline primed surface to enhance painting and cool enough to handle or to go straight into the paint area. One tank is all that is needed.

How does it work? It works by a combination of vapour and immersion stages in one tank. After initial degreasing in the vapour, parts are then

immersed into the DriPHOS® boiling sump where the residual oils and particulate is removed and the phosphate coating is chemically bonded to the surface of all of the parts. After a mini rinse/ final vapour stage the parts are left in the freeboard area for a short time before coming out of the tank totally clean, dry and with a protective surface coating. This gives an excellent bond for subsequent painting operations, with minimal reject rates due to delamination or undercoat staining. . The crystalline coating gives inter-stage protection until painting is needed. Another bonus is the colour change of the metal surface gives a visual indication of quality. The process can be used on steel or aluminium components or mixed metal components or fabrications. For steel parts a total process time can be as little as 3 – 5 minutes. Aluminium parts will be 1 –2 minutes. Bath life averages 2 years. One tank needs little space and uses only small amounts of energy. A very fast, economical and simple to run process.

Why doesn’t everyone use it? Loading bay doors

- is the investment worth it?

As temperatures plummet so too can the working environment in many warehouse situations. Heating costs can rocket. As businesses strive to not only improve energy efficiencies but also safety at work, we explore whether investment in high- speed doors for your loading bay area are worthwhile.

T

he HSE have documented that loading bay areas are among the most dangerous for workplace operations with fork lift trucks, heavy goods vehicles and long goods vehicles all in use. Operating in a world that continually demands shorter delivery lead times takes its toll; accidents inevitably happen. But what can you do to further safe guard against avoidable incidents and improve your loading bays’ efficiency? Doors. There are a huge variety on offer to match application and budget; roller shutter, folding, high –speed versions but what advantages do the modern designs offer over more traditional styles? The cost of a high speed spiral door maybe initially more expensive, but once considered in the round, this capital investment can soon become an asset. For one, improved door opening speeds can significantly reduce energy costs since the desired temperature – whether that’s purposefully warmed or chilled – is maintained as a result of the fast opening and closing door speeds. Speeds of up to 4 metres per second ensures the loss stays low - you permanently save on energy costs. Examples of saving 4,600 litres of heating oil per heating period are not uncommon. Couple opening and closing speeds with thermal insulation of the door’s laths for even greater energy efficiencies. EFAFLEX were the world’s first manufacturer to provide thermally insulated laths for their spiral range, the EFA-SST®. The laths achieve outstanding heat insulation between 0.66 and 1.52 W/m²K making them ideal for closing off large halls and loading bays. Where high volumes of people, plant and machinery meet, incidents can occur but a well-designed loading bay can help mitigate these risks. Improving visibility and line of sight for the vehicle operative is a consideration. High –

speed doors manufactured with crystal clear acrylic glass can be 70% transparent. This not only provides the vehicle operative with improved visibility, a clear line of sight either side of the loading bay door, but also enables natural daylight to enter the immediate area for improved staff well-being and reduced lighting costs. The door design itself is worthy of scrutiny. Traditional roller shutters when drawn up in the door open position, roll onto themselves with contact and wear. This is not so in the EFAFLEX EFA-STT® where the door blade is held apart in the patented contactless spiral design, ensuring next to no wear. As a result, the entire door ensures gleaming looks even in harshest working conditions. Maintenance and service costs of the door should also be taken into account when considering the whole life costs of the investment. The quality, engineering and longevity of high speed doors do differ. At the research stage of your planning it’s key to study load cycles, that’s the opening and closing of the door blades that is achievable between service intervals. Some of the highest quality doors are capable of up to 250,000 cycles per year. Clearly that lowers the overall annual operational cost of the high- speed door, but also reduces the number of service and maintenance visits required which in turn minimises down time. Here we have looked at just some of the advances in loading bay door technology to help drive energy efficiencies, reduce operational cost and improve safety. Every application is unique with its own set of considerations. The purchasing choice is important but hopefully here we have helped you to look beyond just the initial installation cost to consider the investment a long term asset to your business.

How the right choice of circuit breaker can open up new opportunities for savings Switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) have come a long way in recent years, and for many are now preferred in industry to their linear predecessors. Advantages include greater efficiency, smaller size and lower heat generation, making them ideal for use in densely populated cabinets.

t’s important to choose a circuit breaker that will work in tandem with the power supply in order to extract the best reliability and productivity performance with minimal downtime. Specifying the right circuit breaker and power supply early on in the design process can greatly reduce development costs later on.

which create increased resistance. This can prevent the overload current from ever being reached, delaying the trip and preventing the circuit breaker from performing its job. An ECB continuously monitors the current, and switches off the circuit quickly in the event of a fault, even in low overcurrent conditions.

Whilst a modern SMPS is far more efficient than its linear counterparts, it is also far more complex. Despite recent advances, an SMPS supplying a 24 VDC system is not considered to be properly protected when employing thermomagnetic miniature circuit breakers (MCBs) as their reaction time can cause modern SMPSs to quickly go into overload, causing other branches and networks to experience a dip.

Some engineers may prefer to stick with older MCBs, perhaps due to familiarity or cost reasons, and there are solutions available for these configurations too. In such cases the reduced functionality of an MCB compared to an ECB can be offset up to a point by specifying a higher end SMPS and built-in overload features such as WAGO’s TopBoost function, which provides sufficient power with a multiple of the rated current for up to 50ms. The added functionality of a newer SMPS makes it more suitable with older MCBs, which means that companies can save time and money by only uprating the devices that they need to for the required level of protection.

However this can be mitigated with the use of an electronic circuit breaker (ECB), which constantly monitors current and react quickly to faults as a Z curve MCB would, while still allowing high inrush loads during start-up. This allows companies to save money by using a lower end power supply whilst pairing it with an ECB for enhanced overload protection. Modern ECBs are also very thin, which saves cabinet space and can allow a larger power supply to be accommodated. In an MCB circuit a low overcurrent can result in a slow trip, which can be exacerbated further by the use of long wires

Automate to minimise food product recalls By Robert Brooks, European Industry Marketing Manager, Food & Beverage, Omron Electronics. The amount of food product recalls rose significantly during 2015. Robert Brooks argues that effective and integrated plant automation can play a lead role in minimising those costly and damaging recalls. A recent news story* reporting figures for the UK market, made grim reading for businesses in the industry. Far from falling, it reported that the number of food industry recalls actually increased in 2015 from 89 to 159 – a rise of nearly 80% on the previous year. Those businesses need no one to remind them about the huge repercussions, financial as well as reputational, that such recalls set in motion. The report also made clear that the reasons behind these recalls were many and varied. Just under 60% were based on unlisted ingredients (including allergens), but other criteria such as contamination with bacteria, metal or other materials also featured prominently. What is fuelling this increase? Everwidening product ranges mean that manufacturers are producing shorter runs of more variants, each with their own labelling. Recipes for established products, too, are changing as NPD departments reformulate. New packaging grades and materials may be substituted for cost or environmental reasons. At the same time, audits from within the sector have increased both the pressure and necessity for factory traceability, both internally and externally. And as well as adhering to existing regulations such as the Food Information to Consumers (FIC) regulation in 2011, the sector is continually discussing new and improved regulations. Manufacturers will be only too aware of the plethora of existing and debated regulations, plus the advice given on handling a crisis should it occur. But our hope is that producers take a look at how existing technology can assist to meet targets to reduce recalls. It would be easy for food producers to simply throw their hands up and claim that there are too many factors triggering recalls, and that it would be impossible to address them all. Recalls happen because of many diverse factors. Also, they are detected in all areas of the supply chain from ingredient supplier to retailer and consumer.

Of course, it is true that there is no single ‘silver bullet’ to eliminate all these threats on an enterprise-wide scale. But there are a number of productionlevel checks which can be integrated into control and information systems. Taken together, they can dramatically - and reliably - reduce the risk of recalls. If we take a common type of production line including primary packaging (robotic pick-and-place and tray sealing), secondary packaging (top-load cartoning), and tertiary packaging (case-packing and palletising), there are number of points at which faults can occur. These can in turn result in an out-of-specification product and the threat of a recall. So, for example, the servo-driven tool lift on the tray sealer could be losing position over time, or seal quality could be compromised by imprecise temperature control or a change in packaging substrate. During the pick-and-place, a mistake in the hygiene routine could introduce foreign bodies into the packing area, or items may be missed out of a multi-component pack. At the coding and checkweighing stages, the scales may be set up for the wrong pack size. Code quality may also be poor. Even when the overprinting is correct, the wrong product label may have been loaded into the labeller. Similarly, with cartoning and case-packing, the wrong packaging may have been loaded on to the machines and there may be errors in the variable coding. Even at the final, palletising stage, item codes might not be read, and a different product may be palletised and dispatched. Again, despite originating in the same few metres of the production line, many of these potential problems may appear to be unrelated. In fact, all of these functions can be managed and monitored from a single control system. Vision systems for verifying packaging, product and codes, temperature control, sensors and robot controls can all sit on a single machine control platform with direct two-way connectivity with factory or enterprise-level databases. Vision systems may not be a part of the quality control armoury of every food manufacturer, or may only be one of several technologies used. In the past, equipment pricing may have prompted

potential beneficiaries to treat vision with caution. But that perception is changing, and it is not only end users who are choosing to fit vision systems on their lines. Increasingly, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are also integrating the technology into their packaging machinery. It can offer highspeed checking of codes, graphics (reconciling each with the product on the line), pack components, label presence, print legibility, shape, colour and optical character recognition (OCR). The multiple checks that vision can carry out even at the highest line speeds are making them an increasingly valued quality control tool. Database connectivity means that quality inspection and production data can be gathered, and traceability and regulatory compliance can be ensured. It also allows for the monitoring of collected data in order to spot adverse trends and trigger predictive or preventative maintenance. Sensitivity to temperature trends in areas such as primary pack sealing is also important in order to safeguard seal quality and product life. Growing numbers of today’s food packs rely on a combination of heat and pressure for a tight seal and to ensure freshness. The individual machine controller can offer this level of connectivity while bringing under one umbrella logic, motion, vision, safety, temperature control and robotics. Automation, as discussed here, has been adopted by other industry sectors, sometimes driven by strict regulation. There is no reason why the food industry cannot do the same, for reasons of efficiency and flexibility but also - increasingly - in order to minimise the risk of product recalls. Of course, the traceability function within automation also means that, if the worst does happen and product is recalled, systems will make it much easier to identify which product is affected and where it is located.

Integrated production-level checks can dramatically, and reliably, reduce the risk of recalls.

Radiometer aids process control in broad spectrum or LED-based UV curing The new DYMAX ACCU-CAL™ 160 Radiometer from Intertronics is an essential tool for users of UV curing processes, where both validating and subsequent monitoring of the lamp output is vital to consistent production quality. Farleygreene Artisan sieve provides producers with quality controlled end product. When a small artisan producer approached Farleygreene looking for the solution to safeguarding the quality of their powdered ingredients, the Sievmaster 200-S Artisan sieve was exactly what they needed and was within the budget for this type of production set up.

T

his unit is designed to sit on small containers, or even mixing bowls and allows the user to pour their ingredients through an electrically powered vibratory screen. It plugs into a domestic power supply and is light enough to hang on a wall bracket. The user was looking to sieve their flour, sugar and salt ingredients in order to meet their customers audit requirements. They required a simple and efficient means of carrying this out, but without the higher costs of a typical larger production type sieve.

The sieve unit is supplied with 3 mesh screens to be utilised for fine, medium and coarse products, it can even be used for liquid filtration. It also strips down for cleaning without the need for any tools. Everything you need to know about finding a job in engineering this year By Lee Biggins, founder and managing director of CV-Library

Has the New Year got you thinking about a potential new job? It’s a great time to be looking for work, with more businesses advertising their vacancies than any other time of year. That said, you’re probably up against a wealth of other candidates, and our data has explored just how competitive it is to find a job in the sector. In fact, our findings reveal that on average there were over 240,000 applications for jobs in the engineering sector last year, which equates to around 13 applications per job. The amount of jobs on offer stood at 19,021, a 5% increase on 2015, which is positive news for candidates looking for work in 2017. The top desired job titles across the industry were: engineer, design engineer, mechanical engineer, welder and project manager. And, further analysis into workers’ CVs on the CV-Library database found that the average desired salary for workers in the sector was £35,577.77. However, our data indicates that last years’ average salary stood at £34,222, 3.8% lower than what the average job hunter in the engineering industry expects to be paid. It’s definitely great to see the engineering industry’s job market so active, and it is hoped that this will continue well into the year ahead. That said, there is clearly a disconnect between employer and employee expectations when it comes to salaries, and it’s important

to know what you should be entitled to given your skills and experience. For candidates looking for work in the sector, it’s also vital that you think about what you can do to stand out from the crowd, given that you’ll likely be up against thirteen or more people for the job! Alongside this, our findings reveal that candidates in the sector may have to work harder to stand out from their competition, as the CV analysis suggests that there are five most common skills and attributes on engineering workers’ CVs, which include: communication, engineering, problem solving, design and team work. For employers, the top locations whether candidates in the sector are looking for work are London, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Bristol. Furthermore, while over a third (34.3%) would be willing to relocate for their dream engineering job, the majority (65.7%) would not, and would only be willing to travel up to 20 miles. Our analysis suggests that there are similar trends across

the majority of engineers’ CVs, and while this is inevitable, given that roles in the industry require great communication, team work and problem solving skills, it’s important that any job hunter thinks about what they can do to set themselves apart from the competition. Whether that’s perfecting your interviewing skills, using a more creative format on your CV or taking the time to do a tailored cover letter, any additional action that you take could be all you need to bag yourself a great job this year!

Current monitoring modularized to the maximum extent Mico Pro is the new and innovative current monitoring system from Murrelektronik. The modular system enables you to adapt systems precisely to suit specific applications – offering a favorable cost-benefit ratio while also being economical in their use of space. The patented tripping process assures optimum machine availability. Mico Pro monitors load and control currents and identifies critical moments. It signals limit loads and switches defective channels off in a targeted manner – according to the principle of “as late as possible, as early as necessary.” Mico Pro is a modular system for 12 and 24V DC operating voltages. Components can be selected for the particular application from numerous Mico Pro modules. You can select between modules with one, two or four output channels. The tripping currents are fixed (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 16 A) or can be flexibly adjusted from 1 to 10 A or from 11 to 20 A. Mico Pro has an integrated potential distribution concept for +24 (or +12) and 0V that significantly simplifies switch cabinet wiring. There are connection options for +24V and 0V on each channel. The innovate bridging system consisting of two bars and lateral spring contacts for connecting diagnostic and control signals is easy to handle. It is designed for a total current of up to 40A. All inputs and outputs of the system are provided with push-in spring clamp terminals.

Each channel is equipped with an LED for status indication on the device and digital status signals can be transferred to the PLC. A channel-specific switching function via an PLC signal allows the Flex modules to switch system components on and off without any additional contactors, relays,

Stepper motors for extremely hostile conditions – LG Motion steps up to the mark with a new generation of motors from Empire Magnetics. Stepper motors are designed to give graduated and precise motion control and are used extensively in a wide range of everyday industrial applications, some which might be quite surprising. For example the aircon systems in motor vehicles today with sophisticated automatically regulated temperature settings may be fitted with up to 30 or more BUS controller stepper motors. These are used to control precisely the opening of the aircon flaps situated all around the vehicle to ensure the correct cabin temperature is delivered. Now, consider for a moment the number of vehicles out there and you get an idea of the huge volumes involved. A different approach is required when designing and manufacturing motors for hostile conditions The challenge in this sort of application is that high volume manufactured components have to find the trade-off between delivery of the specification required and the unit cost of production which will be acceptable to both manufacturer and client. This means that, when considering a motor design for really hostile environments, it is not a good idea to start the process by taking the basic design of a standard product and trying to “design it up” to meet the demands of the new specification. Because the operating conditions can have such extreme demands on material, lubricants, sealing and the windings of a stepper motor the only sensible way to approach the design is to start with a blank sheet of paper and carefully assess the all aspects of the operational criteria from scratch. LG Motion the Basingstoke designer and manufacturer of motion control components and systems has a vast amount of expertise in supplying stepper motors from the US based manufacturer Empire Magnetics for the most difficult applications imaginable.

Motors in outer space and under water – that’s extreme! Motors operating in a vacuum or radiation sensitive environments, stepper motors required to operate under extreme temperature conditions in outer space for example or in cryogenic applications and last of all, stepper motors which need to be

waterproof to withstand the presence of water, moisture and solvents.

Waterproof stepper motors Such motors need to perform at a minimum depth of 30 feet and are truly waterproof designed motors using shaft seals , O rings, hermetic cable feedthrough, pressure equalisation and other features. The main problem is that a standard stepper motor will be wound with a solid copper wire coated with enamels or a varnish. Even though the coating process is very good, the varnish will always have small pin holes in it and, even if only a small amount of moisture gets b through the holes and between the wires of the coil it will promote conductivity from pin hole to pin hole. A waterproof motor is designed to accommodate O-ring seals, allowing the watertight sealing that is not practical in a standard motor. Further, the wiring that leads to the motor coils in a waterproof motor requires a hermetically-sealed feed-through device to prevent water ingress into the motor via the cable conductors. Other seals are required. For instance, a threaded pipe plug at the rear of the motor is designed to allow the housing to be sealed after the motor connections have been made; this plug is also fitted with an O-ring seal. The motor shaft itself is provided with redundant shaft seals. Additional life-extending features include double insulation, coated laminations, and fittings for pressurisation.

from +200° C in blazing sun to -200° C freezing shadow in a matter of seconds. Contraction of metallic parts and hardening of non-metallic parts are the two primary factors that can cause failure of the stepper motor operating under these conditions. In the instance of contraction, if motor components with critical dimensions contract at different rates, the motor may lock. The resultant stress can crack metal parts made brittle by super-cooling. To combat these effects, special alloys must be selected for a low temperature motor, and all metal components must have comparable coefficients of thermal expansion. Both cable insulation and bearing grease are susceptible to hardening at cryogenic temperatures. Dry lubrication may be required and insulation polymers must be carefully selected to retain molecular integrity through low temperature cycling.

Railtex continues to grow

ahead of May opening It is now less than three months before Railtex, the UK’s leading railway technology event, opens its doors at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. Strong demand for stands at the show has continued into 2017, and by late January the number of exhibitors had risen to nearly 350, with more firms still selecting their stands. Covering both fixed assets and rolling stock, they represent a complete cross-section of the railway supply sector, with plenty to interest anyone working in the industry or in engineering in general.

mong participating companies will be highprofile suppliers such as Alstom Transport, Hitachi Rail Europe, Knorr-Bremse, Siemens and Wabtec. This year there will also be many first-time exhibitors, including train and locomotive builder Stadler Rail and SNCF fleet maintenance subsidiary Masteris, while making a return to the show will be Chinese rolling stock company CRRC Corporation, which claims to be the world’s biggest rail vehicle builder. Transformation and flexibility top themes for Utility Week Live Transformation and flexibility are the two headline themes of Utility Week Live, which returns to the NEC in Birmingham on 23-24 May 2017 bigger and better than ever. Today’s utilities need to rise to the challenges of changing models of consumption and competition, the demands of sustainability and extreme weather, and political and economic upheaval: all these require a new approach from the essential businesses delivering water, gas and electricity to UK homes and businesses. New dates announced for Instrumentation Scotland & Offshore Systems 2018 One of Scotland’s most popular trade shows, the next edition of biennial trade show Instrumentation Scotland & Offshore Systems will take place on 4-5 July 2018.

New intelligent systems such as the WIN wireless machine monitoring and call for actions systems developed by Werma not only issue automatic warnings in case of hazardous operating conditions but also collect relevant data from the machine or workstation to enable counter measures to be considered to enable durable safe and efficient operations.

WIN – innovative andon light based machine monitoring system

The system uses conventional andon lights to indicate changes in status of the machine as it moves, for example from a productive state indicated by the green light to a non- productive state amber/red. This status change is transmitted wirelessly to WIN software which presents clients with real time views of the operating conditions of the machines. Information is stored on a database which enable the client to produce with a couple of mouse clicks reports detailing the uptime/downtime detail of the machines and other information such as quantities produced and fault codes generated. The system will send automatically e-mails to those people responsible for intervening and getting the machines up and running again.

Andonspeed – speed up your logistics operation and reduce costs and delays A signal tower is manually activated by a member of staff on the shop floor to call for help from the appropriate service. By just pressing a button a signal light is illuminated on the workstation, clearly indicating the call for action required. The call for action can also be sent automatically by-email to the service concerned and response times can be monitored.

Intuitive and easy to use – Andonspeed is quick to install, the simple activation of traditional traffic light colours green, red and amber make it suitable even for unskilled or seasonal staff. The manual system can also be upgraded very simply to include the WIN wireless software and functionality described above. As well then as giving a local visual signal that assistance is required the upgraded system will transmit the request wirelessly to the service concerned, maintenance or stores for example, whose response time to the call can be monitored easily. Simply reports will summarise the frequency of call outs, typical fault codes/reasons for call out and lead to countermeasures being implemented.
