CWM Moves to New Site December 2019 saw CWM Automation relocate from its premises on Corringham Road Industrial Estate to a new factory in Gainsborough. The new site, located on North Warren Road, is over 4 times the size of our previous premises at 36,500 sq. foot and now boosts a proof of concept test area as well as enhanced facilities throughout.

Founded in 2006, CWM Automation are specialists in providing customers with a wide range of automation solutions with its core products being filling, heat sealing and lidding machinery, as well as fully automatic endof-line solutions. Expansion and new appointments at Advance County Durham-based conveying and automated handling specialist, Advance Automated Systems, is set to further expand their operation by establishing a satellite projects office in Leicestershire. The move coincides with the announcement of two new key appointments. Operating from a recently extended 30,000 sq ft manufacturing site, Advance provides a fully integrated single source for the design, manufacture and installation of conveyors, conveyor systems and controls. Alongside existing business and the addition of new contracts acquired throughout the UK, the company has taken a lease on office space in Lutterworth, primarily to bolster product support during the design, installation and commissioning phases of projects in the central and south of the country. Ahead of the office becoming operational in early February 2020, Advance has also appointed Brian Skelham as a senior project engineer to head-up the new venture. Previously employed as a business project manager at online retailer, Ocado, based in Tamworth, Staffs, Skelham brings nearly 30 years of materials handling experience to the role. Combining extensive skills in engineering, project management, finance, e-commerce and operational support, he will look after a portfolio of Advance’s key central and southern customers, as well as having business development and sales responsibilities. “With an increasing number of contracts in the southern half of the country and placing more of an emphasis on providing a fully integrated offering, we have had to extend our reach by creating a satellite projects office,” said Advance’s Bryn Roberts. “We also needed someone highly capable to manage this new undertaking, so by having someone of Brian’s calibre joining us, particularly at a time when we look to fully optimise growth opportunities, is ideal.”

Advance has also reinforced their northern structure with the appointment of Adam Robinson. Fabrication Design Considerations For Low Field Shielding Applications Typically, hydrogen atmospherically controlled heat treatment process called perfection annealing or final annealing is required after stamping, machining, bending, rolling, severe forming or welding, and is crucial in relieving material stress and developing the alloy’s maximum shielding performance. Handle annealed magnetic shields carefully to avoid severe deformation which causes reduced attenuation. The perfection annealed fabricated shields and parts are then tested at our in-house quality control lab to certify that the demanding specifications are met. One of the most important design questions is whether the source field is internal or external, and which field is most economical and practical to shield. Internal interference is created by designed-in components located within a circuit, system, enclosure, piece of equipment or room. External interference or the H-field source is created by unwanted nearby fields radiating from power lines, circuits, electrical enclosures, transformers, electro-magnetic machinery and the earth’s magnetism. Secondly, should the source of interference or the sensitive device be shielded? The answer to this question depends on several factors. Shielding the source may involve stronger fields, and therefore thicker materials. All interference sources must be shielded, or the sensitive device will still be affected. The usual approach is to shield the sensitive device. This prevents interference from both present and future sources. A hands-on approach to solving a shielding problem can be accomplished with the use of a lab kit, testing, and prototyping. Material selection will depend on the strength of the unwanted field (Ho) and the amount of field attenuation required. MuMETAL® is the preferred solution because of its reliable performance for reducing low-frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI) between the range of 30 Hz to 300 Hz. Available as stress annealed (partially annealed for ease of machinability) sheet stock, it is used for fabricated shields such as enclosures, cylinders, cans, channels or 3-D boxes. Complex cylindrical shaped shields are the most efficient for redirecting and reducing magnetic fields. Magnetic shielding alloys have sensitivity to mechanical shock - bending, forming, even severe flexing may give some reduction in the alloy's magnetic permeability. But modern, vacuum-refined alloys have a lower sensitivity to shock, and normally withstand regular handling without significant loss of properties. Another consideration is cutting the alloy without affecting the alloy properties and degrading the performance. Cutting by shearing, EDM, waterjet, photochemical etching, or blanking dies typically only affects that portion of the alloy immediately adjacent to the edge, and the shield will exhibit normal shielding performance. If the alloy had already received its final magnetic anneal, re-annealing should not be necessary.

Magnetic shielding applications may occur at a high vacuum. Co-NETIC® AA alloy is specifically formulated for maximum magnetic shielding properties and has some physical properties similar to stainless steel. Out-gassing is minimal and cleaning for high vacuum applications can follow the same procedures used for stainless steel. Co-NETIC® and NETIC® magnetic shielding alloys have a positive coefficient of permeability with respect to temperature. This is a quick way of saying that the permeability increases as temperature increases. The Curie temperatures are between 850°F (454°C) and 840°F (449°C) for Co-NETIC®, NETIC® and MuMETAL®. At operating temperatures above the Curie temperature, the shield will not provide any attenuation of the magnetic field. Roll-off of permeability begins as operating temperature nears (within 25°F) the Curie temperature listed, so a safety factor for allowable operating temperature should be used. Temporary temperature excursions above curie temperature do not degrade the alloys. Shielding function is restored when the temperature again falls below Curie point. High permeability MuMETAL® and Co-NETIC® alloys have an optimal temperature range in which the permeability peaks. Permeability starts to drop below -40°C, making it unsuitable in low temperature applications. HRS helps AD plant tap into additional heat from existing CHP Operators of anaerobic digestion (AD) plants know how important it is to optimise energy use across all stages of the process. That is why many recapture as much heat as possible for reuse elsewhere, including from the hot exhaust gases generated by the combined heat and power (CHP) engines which turn the biogas from the AD plant into useful heat and electricity. Heat exchangers used for exhaust gas heat recovery need to be particularly robust in order to cope with the physical and chemical stresses imposed on them from the exhaust gases which are both hot and corrosive. HRS Heat Exchangers were recently asked to install just such a unit. An AD site belonging to one of the leading waste management companies in the UK, transforms some 45,000 tonnes of food waste from domestic and commercial sources into renewable electricity and high value digestate biofertiliser. From the beginning the plant had been designed to be as efficient as possible and included exhaust gas heat recovery. However, when the original heat exchanger fitted to the exhaust system failed after just a few years of operation, the client approached HRS to provide a more robust and reliable replacement. The ideal solution was an HRS G Series gas cooling heat exchanger: a complete stainless steel multi-tube heat exchanger specifically designed

for exhaust gas cooling and thermal recovery. The hot exhaust gases flows through the interior tubes of the heat exchanger while the service fluid, in this case water, flows though the surrounding shell. The use of stainless steel is a key factor in the longevity of the G Series and rapid corrosion of the original carbon steel unit was one of the reasons for the original’s failure. Other design features of the G Series also increase its operational life as Matt Hale, International Sales & Marketing Director at HRS Heat Exchangers explains: “All HRS tubular heat exchangers include bellows in their design to allow for thermal expansion. The original heat exchanger we replaced was exposed to significant thermal stresses which contributed to its early failure. “You also need to consider the condensation which can occur when the hot gas meets the tubeplate and cooling begins. The resulting condensate is acidic and can be extremely corrosive, so the HRS G Series includes drains in the header to allow this condensate to

be removed, as well as a hatch to allow for manual cleaning and inspection.” As an operational plant, it was important to keep downtime at the plant to a minimum during the installation of the new unit. HRS manufactured the new heat exchanger to the same eternal dimensions and used the same connections as the original. This enabled a straightforward installation in just a few hours without any pipework modifications, with the installation being carried out just eight weeks after design approval. In operation the new G Series heat exchanger cools the exhaust gas from ~530oC to ~320oC and the heat recaptured from the process is used in the AD facility and to provide hot water around the site. Since installation the HRS G Series heat exchanger has performed so well that HRS has been asked to quote for the replacement of another unit which is used to treat the digested sludge from the plant, with an HRS DTI Series unit.

The European Norm EN 310 stipulates the method for determining the bending strength of wood-based panels by 3-point bend testing. Mecmesin’s MultiTest 25-xt tensile tester was the ideal choice as a bench-top model capable of applying the necessary compressive load and having the versatility to perform a range of other peel and tensile tests. A bend jig having a 400 mm span and cylindrical roller supports and anvil was used. The Emperor software of the MultiTest 25-xt automatically calculated the bending strength and modulus of elasticity for inclusion in the customer’s test report.

One of Mecmesin’s Lithuanian customers is a leading manufacturer of wooden furniture. Specialising in finished particle board (FPB) impregnation and lamination, it produces primarily for a Swedish end-customer brand, delivering, amongst other items, over 5 million kitchen cabinets a year. Particle board is a waste-wood product made by heat pressing wood chips, shavings or sawdust and resin together to form structural sheets for a variety of uses in ready-made furniture. Compression is applied multiple times to the particle board sheet to create the tightest possible bond between the resin and the wood fragments. As the boards are significant components in load-bearing kitchen and household furniture construction, it was important for this manufacturer to test their physical strength to ensure they meet the rigorous performance standards required.

A further test was conducted in accordance with the consumer brand’s standards to measure the peel strength of melamine-faced strips which are bonded to the FPB structure. A dedicated peel jig was produced which allowed the veneer strip to peel at a constant 90-degree angle, whilst the Emperor software detected the areas of high and low bond strength to calculate the overall peel values.

Direct leak detection in enclosed GIS substation requires highly sensitive and reliable SF6 gas monitoring. GIS insulated switchgear require specific operation and maintenance procedures to prevent and limit the emissions of the insulating gas (SF6 – sulfur hexafluoride), which is a very potent greenhouse gas. New regulatory frames like the F-Gas Directive are mandating the use of leak detection systems in the vast majority of GIS insulated switchgear installation in order to better mitigate the risk of SF6 emissions. Indirect leak detection solutions are rapidly expensive as they require one monitoring device per gas compartment. Furthermore, the pressure/density switches that are currently used to monitor the SF6 gas compartment for safety consideration are lacking sensitivity for rapid leak detection. Direct detection is normally a preferred and more reliable method as it relies on measuring trace concentration for leaking gas in the ambient air. However, incumbent SF6 room monitors have detection limits around 1 ppm that is higher than the expected SF6 concentration range in a normally ventilated indoor substation (in the 10-100 ppb range).

It enables a decrease in the number of periodic manual leak checks, hence the cost. With up to 24 different channels, the 3731 system enables an extensive distribution of sampling points over the whole monitored substation in order to maximize the coverage area and minimize the detection response time. Each sampling line (nylon tubing) can be extended up to 75 m. The detection system has extended self-test routines which maintain the reliability of the results. Besides, our stable PAS design only requires calibration once per year. Analog output is available for detection trending over time. Measurements are also stored in the internal memory and can be exported to a remote LAN computer. Finally, configurable zone alarms can be relayed to a local RTU.

Optical Flow Sensors Monitor Cooling of the World’s Most Sensitive Astronomical Camera Titan Enterprises reports on how optical flow sensor technology has solved a high-tech problem monitoring the flow of coolant to the world's most sensitive astronomical camera.

The world’s largest optical telescope, the 10.4m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) on the Canary Island of La Palma, is equipped with a powerful astronomical camera built by the University of Sheffield, UK. This camera, called HiPERCAM, was commissioned on the telescope in 2018 and can take over 1000 pictures every second simultaneously in five optical colours. The five light sensors used in HiPERCAM are ultra-sensitive charge-coupled devices (CCDs), which require cooling to

183K (-90degC) to minimise noise in the images. This cooling is achieved using very high performance thermo-electric (Peltier) coolers, which in turn require a liquid coolant (a water-glycol mixture at +5degC) to remove the heat they extract. If the flow of coolant fails, the heat input from the Peltier power supplies would destroy the CCDs, which would cost over £500,000 and take years to replace. With so much at stake, the Sheffield team have developed a fail-safe system, where any disruption to the flow of coolant past the detector causes the power supply to the Peltiers to switch off automatically, thereby protecting their expensive equipment. Clearly, the most important element in this fail-safe system is an accurate and reliable flow sensor for the coolant. After attempts to use turbine and ultrasonic flow sensors proved unsuccessful due to metallic film build-up on the propellers and micro bubbles in the coolant the HiPERCAM team turned to Titan Enterprises for advice. After detailed

discussions around a type of sensor that could be used that is impervious to the undesirable (but unavoidable) characteristics of the telescope’s cooling fluid - the Titan FT2 optical flow sensor that uses an LED and photodiode to measure flow was proposed. When the rotor spins in an FT2 optical flow sensor the photodiode can detect the LED with a frequency proportional to the flow rate. When the rotor is static, the photodiode cannot see the LED, indicating no flow. Six FT-2 optical flow sensors have recently been successfully tested in the lab at Sheffield and are now on their way to the GTC in La Palma for final commissioning on HiPERCAM to enable this powerful astronomical camera to finally achieve its full scientific potential. Rittal Supplies Bespoke Panels for Critical Controls The East Midlands Instrumentation Company Ltd (EMI), an electrical, instrumentation and control installation contractor for the power generation, power transmission, rail and industrial markets based in Gainsborough, had a complex specification from a client.

The client needed specially designed panels to protect critical equipment that controlled a remote pumping station and dam. A complex control and distribution system with Rittal's Ri4Power system allowed segregation of the busbars from the controls. This meant three panels were needed for power and motor control, automation and control, and monitoring/communications. The monitoring equipment needed to be installed within an area at risk of flooding, so it was decided to place the panel on a metre-tall frame to reduce the chances of the equipment being damaged by floodwater inundation. To overcome this, Rittal’s engineers designed a custom-sized Ri4Power panel to sit comfortably on the frame. All three panels had to withstand internal fires and each compartment was fitted with a special fire resistant lining to stop fire spreading from one to another, and a smoke/ fire rated venting system. In addition, special filters were installed for ventilation, which included a gel that expanded if heat was detected and closed any air gaps. The power and motor control panel was specially designed in an L-shape to fit neatly within its allocated space. The Rittal team also developed a busbar that was designed to accept a mains supply, but which could also accept a temporary generator supply, if needed, for essential loads. DC UPS - CBI Series The CBI DC UPS combine the functions of a power supply, a backup module and of a battery charger in one unit. The CBI units switch from the mains to the battery in the event of a mains failure without interruption. They use switching technology with microcontrollers and optimise the supply to the DC load either when the AC mains is present or when on battery backup. The CBI units do not allow for deep discharge of the batteries.

They are equipped with two relays; one to operate to indicate the status of the mains or battery backup and another to indicate any of the eight battery protection functions that the unit monitors. The primary function of the CBI unit is to optimise the battery condition so when it is required the battery is as good as its life cycle will allow for. All units are DIN rail mounted and there is a range of battery carriers available to safely and easily fit the battery packs into the enclosure or panel. There is automatic protection without fuse against the reserve polarity, short circuit and overload and overvoltage. They carry out diagnostic

Which alloy springs to mind? Choosing the right material for industrial springs In the Marvel cinematic universe exotic materials are portrayed as a must to achieve great things in fictional worlds. Superman’s kryptonite and Wolverine’s adamantium did exactly that for the superheroes. In reality, choosing a material for your design is not as simple as choosing the most extravagant alloy. Here Justin Lawrence, applications engineer at leading fastening and fixing supplier TFC, explains the suitability of different alloys for specific environments. When choosing a spring for your industrial application, one of the major considerations is the material, as this will determine the spring’s suitability for the environment it is working in. Choose the wrong one and you could be facing a costly redesign or repair job down the line. When choosing a spring, the choice of materials range from standard carbon spring steel, through a variety of stainless steels and all the way to more exotic nickel-chromium alloys. To make an informed decision regarding what material is best for your application a good understanding of the properties of each alloy with respect to temperature and corrosion resistance is essential. Temperature resistance The first environmental factor that can influence the material choice is temperature. When springs are used in environments close to or outside their recommended operating temperatures, it can lead to permanent deformation, or in the case of extreme cold, to a brittle fracture. For applications operating at ambient temperatures, SAE 1070-1090 carbon tempered steel’s maximum recommended temperature of 121°C will probably serve you well. This standard material is widely used in many industrial applications. Tensile and yield strength are maximised as a result of the oil tempered martensitic structure. For applications involving elevated temperatures, 17-7 Ph/C stainless steel offers up to 343°C as a maximum recommended temperature. Spring properties are achieved by precipitation hardening condition C to condition CH900. A286 stainless steel, or maybe Inconel 718 are the pinnacle of heat resistant alloys, boasting maximum recommended temperatures of over 500°C. However, these materials come with a much lower tensile strength, meaning careful consideration throughout the design process is critical to ensure the springs will function correctly.

For extreme low temperatures, such as those in cryogenic systems, choice of material is equally important. In these applications 300 series stainless steels or Nickel alloys are normally preferred. Corrosion resistance Alongside thermal damage, corrosion can also cause springs to fail. Corrosion occurs when metals react with their surroundings, this can lead to microscopic cracks that will eventually fail. As a result, corrosion is a much more relevant threat to carbon steel, which is vulnerable to atmospheric damage when not properly sealed. For improved performance 17-7 stainless steel has a similar corrosion resistance up to 302 stainless, whilst offering excellent spring properties. 316 stainless offers higher corrosion resistance due to its molybdenum content and is widely used in chemical or sea water applications. Highly corrosive environments can often require more than the protection offered by stainless steel. High-performance alloys such as Inconel and Elgiloy are specifically designed to survive harsh environments. he GRX is applicable for highest temperatures by using a unique chemical vapour deposition method (PyC coating). By this PyC coating, the rupture disc holds significantly longer at very high temperatures, while remaining permanently leaktight in comparison to other coatings and impregnations. For example: Rupture discs with a coating made of synthetic resin would no longer be able to offer this leak-tightness at temperatures far above 200 °C. Rotaflow Completes Loading Arm Job for Vulica Shipping Company Limited As a swivel joint specialist, Derbyshire-based Rotaflow are often called in to find solutions to problems that lie beyond the expertise of many engineering companies. One such example involved the design and manufacture of a bespoke swivel joint complex for Vulica Shipping Company Limited. Rotaflow were called in to design articulated pipework to supply water for a fire suppression system on the crane booms on two bulk carrying vessels. The crane had to be able to swing over 90 degrees in both directions, as well as up and down whilst allowing water to travel along its length. The system had to be retrofitted around existing equipment, meaning that spatial constraints provided a design headache. Innovative solutions to complex problems are what Rotaflow do best, so the design team set to work. There were two major issues the engineers working on the project had to overcome… 1.

The limited space in which the crane had to operate – it had to be long enough to satisfy its own operational needs, but be able to fold away into a small enough space to allow normal operations of the ships. This would require multiple swivel joints on the arm to give several degrees of freedom in motion.

2. The boat and crane ends had been designed by different companies, so Rotaflow had to design and manufacture a solution that allowed two completely different designs to work together. In writing, these issues seem easy enough to deal with, but when you consider the Rotaflow engineers had to design a solution that allowed a crane to extend to over 16 feet in length, but had to retract to less than 8 feet between connection points in

normal day-to-day operations of the ship.

As the hose supplies a fire suppression system, reliability is paramount – there’s no room for sub-par engineering. The design and manufacture had to be perfect. Rotaflow had plenty of experience of dealing with this from previous projects, but the added dimension of making the hose articulate at a number of points added a level of complexity many other companies just weren’t willing to deal with.

After building and extensive inhouse testing, the design was sent off for installation on the ships, under the supervision of Rotaflow engineers. Thankfully the hard work was rewarded with a very successful integration of the parts.

The solution wasn’t an easy one – numerous iterations of the design were created and computer-modelled but each one had issues. The final design is constructed from stainless steel with a total of five swivel joints. It can extend to facilitate the crane’s full range of motion yet fold down to a small space allowing

Latest NSK bearings suit lean lubrication conditions in EVs NSK has developed a new tapered roller bearing for use in electric vehicles (including hybrid, fuel cell and battery electric variants) that offers long life even under severely lean lubrication conditions. The bearings dramatically boost seizure resistance under lean lubrication, in turn improving transmission reliability and efficiency, and enabling the use of smaller lubrication systems and more compact gearbox designs As public concern for the environment continues to increase, consumers and businesses around the world are demanding better fuel economy from road transport, leading to the rapid development of electric vehicles (EVs). To this end, improving the efficiency of the gearbox and reducing the size and weight of components is essential in extending the maximum driving range of EVs. Therefore, the bearings used in these applications need to be small and offer low energy loss. Conventional tapered roller bearings can bear relatively large loads for their size, but have rollers held in place at their end by a rib. As the quantity of lubrication is reduced, conventional tapered bearings will seize more frequently due to damage from sliding contact in this area, making it difficult to significantly simplify lubrication systems and reduce the amount of oil used. Accordingly, NSK set about developing a new tapered roller bearing to surmount this hurdle and clear the path to further progress. Among the design innovations of the new bearing, NSK created a special cage that retains and distributes oil in fine grooves via capillary action. The oil is held in the cage near the roller end and, when lubrication is low, seeps out of the fine grooves to the area most in need. Lean lubrication conditions in EVs are more common than many might think. After start-up and initial driving (which lubricates components), EVs often shut off the oil pump to conserve power, resulting in a reduced (lean) lubrication supply. There are also challenges to starting EVs at lower temperatures, such as a dramatically increased oil viscosity, making it more difficult to supply the bearings with oil. NSK's new tapered roller bearings achieve seven times higher seizure resistance after shutting off the oil pump in comparison with the company’s conventional alternatives. A further benefit is that gearbox bearings lubricated by oil bath systems can be redesigned to use a more efficient oil spray system.

Compared with NSK’s conventional tapered roller bearings, the latest bearings require 95% less lubrication oil to prevent seizure. As a result, a smaller pump can be used, eliminating any churning loss in the process. The bearings also offer a reduced width, which has been achieved by optimising the cage shape.In a comparison with NSK’s conventional tapered bearings, the latest product is 10% narrower and has 5% less mass.

Counting on Cube67 When Every Machine Is Different Hager relies on Murrelektronik’s modular, decentralized and compact Cube67 system when building their own testing machines

nyone installing or renewing electrical systems in a house or apartment is almost certain to come across Hager products and solutions. The company is the world’s leading specialist in building automation and electrical installations. Not only is Hager represented worldwide, but they have production plants on every continent. They maintain the highest quality standards at these plants. No component leaves the plant without undergoing a meticulous function test, checking every single detail. One Cable Technology Another main benefit for Hager is that the Murrelektronik Cube67 system modules are connected to the bus nodes using one cable technology. The single cordset transmits both data and energy and runs from one module to the next. It’s easy to design the system as needed since it is based on a star-line topology. The one cable technology transmits both data and power to supply the sensors and actuators – so there is no need to run two separate cordsets to the modules. This simplifies installation and maintenance for the engineers. They only need half the amount of cabling and are twice as fast – not to mention that significantly less space is needed for cabling in the first place. This

Hager engineers use the Cube67 system’s extensive diagnostics options for this purpose. They make it easy for maintenance personnel on site to find the problem, analyze it and take appropriate action to eliminate it. The technicians at the Hager plants are trained by their colleagues in Obernai. And, in the unlikely event that a tougher problem does arise, the team in Obernai can lend a virtual helping hand via remote access over the Internet. The experts at Hager already successfully switched from PROFIBUS to PROFINET some years ago. They have since been satisfied with the installation concept. Thanks to the Cube, existing systems can adopt new protocols simply by changing the bus module instead of the system. Cube67 makes it possible to simply replace the bus modules, changing the protocol with it and equipping machines for the higher level PROFINET system. The structure after the bus module can remain unchanged – cables and all! No longer does the team have to spend time on documentation and reprogramming, nor for new purchasing process or stock checks. Hager benefits from the Murrelektronik concept. While 80 percent of the machines and installations are designed for integration in PROFINET systems, 20 percent of them are designed for Ethernet/IP environments. The same concept applies here simply replace the bus modules to implement a different protocol – and leave existing cabling in place.

TWENTY IN 2020: BCMPA TO CELEBRATE MILESTONE BIRTHDAY AT UK’S LARGEST PACKAGING SHOW The British Contract Manufacturers and Packers Association (BCMPA) will be turning 20 in 2020 – and will mark its anniversary at the Contract Pack & Fulfilment show in February. Formed in 2000, the BCMPA will be hosting a 20th anniversary celebration dinner for its 150-plus members during the exhibition at the Birmingham NEC on Wednesday, February 26. The Contract Pack & Fulfilment show, which takes place on February 26 and 27, forms part of Packaging Innovations, the UK’s largest packaging exhibition. T&M solutions for the mobile industry at MWC2020 Rohde & Schwarz presents a comprehensive look at its test and measurement portfolio for wireless communications technology and secure networks at MWC2020 in Barcelona. NEW SWIVEL CASTORS WITH INTEGRATED LIFTING FEET New from Aldershot-based machine element experts FATH Components is a range of precision engineered swivel castors with integrated lifting feet that are stated to provide effortless movement together with safe, positive positioning once in place. They can be seen for the first time in the UK on Stand No G260 at the Southern Manufacturing show at Farnborough. 12 models are available in the new range, with individual castor/feet units that are rated to carry loads varying from 1kg up to 250kg each. All variants of the castor provide full, 360° rotation combined with a positive lock-in-place lifting foot for secure positioning. A unique feature of the new FATH swivel castors which is expected to hold special appeal for end users is that the footpedal used to deploy the feet that ‘lock’ moveable units into place is geared at 1:20. So a 200kg load can be lifted with just 10kg of effort – significantly less than the typical clutch pedal pressure on many cars. The M12 threaded feet on each swivel castor provide a 50mm diameter footprint together with a good range of adjustment for levelling purposes - up to 25mm dependent upon the model. Designers will welcome the news that every version in the new swivel castor lifting foot range comes with a special mounting plate allowing it to be readily fitted onto a variety of different frames and profile corners. Further, a unique feature of the new design ensures that the castor mounting plate fits flush to the edges of the frames, obviating the potential dangers or inconveniences of any unwanted protrusion. FATH says that the new range is suited to modular profiles of both 40mm and 45mm, and that all models can also be used to fit rectangular profiles of both 40x80mm and 45x90mm. The company adds that the new castors allow users to implement frequent changes of equipment location which is both swift and fuss-free. Detail touches like the covering on the foot-operated lifting pedal and the special antislip plate used on the base of the feet ensure that the movement of units is also both safe and operator friendly. SICK Conquers New Frontiers with World’s Smallest Safety Laser Scanner SICK has launched the world’s smallest safety laser scanner, the nanoScan3, designed for easy and economical integration into the smallest of machine designs, particularly for automated guided vehicles, carts, mobile platforms and service robots. The ultra-compact SICK nanoScan3 is just eight centimetres tall, so it can fit snugly into the spaces in machines where safety laser scanners could not previously have been located. Packing in all of SICK’s latest safety laser scanning technology advances, the nanoScan3 enables the highest level of responsiveness when safely adjusting a machine’s speed and direction. The SICK nanoScan3 features a full suite of programmable features such as multiple, dynamically adapting protective fields and contour detection. With SICK’s innovative safeHDDM® (High Definition Distance Measurement) scanning and evaluation technology onboard, the nanoScan3 promises maximum reliability with the option of precise data output for use in navigation, even under difficult conditions such as bright lights, sparks, dust and dirt. Measuring just 101 x 101 x 80 mm, the SICK nanoScan3 is also suitable for integration into stationary plant and infrastructure for hazardous point, area and access protection applications, as well offering opportunities for retrofitting into contour- or tape-guided mobile vehicles. Test plant personnel’s footwear - don’t be in for a shock Through their own movement people can generate large amounts of static charge if they are not grounded. Over 30,000 volts can be carried by people who are completely unaware that they themselves are the potential source of an electrostatic spark discharge that could ignite a flammable atmosphere. Discharges of static electricity have been identified as an ignition source for a broad range of processes that cut right across a wide selection of industry groups with both plant equipment and personnel based operations. 58|

Static dissipative footwear is designed to prevent hazards that may arise due to excessively high footwear resistance with respect to ground. Regular testing of static dissipative footwear is strongly recommended to ensure the static dissipative properties of the shoes do not change during the duration of their use. The Earth-Rite® Sole-Mate II tester from Newson Gale, provides a time efficient and cost effective method of ensuring personnel operating in hazardous areas are wearing static dissipative shoes that are capable of preventing electrostatic charge accumulation on their bodies. The system tests the condition and measures the resistance of the footwear to ensure static is capable of dissipating from personnel through their shoes to ground.

The Sole-Mate II testing station is typically located at the entrance to a hazardous area and plant personnel are afforded a quick ‘pass’ or ‘fail’ reading instantly. If the resistance of the shoes is too high, the Sole-Mate II tester will indicate that the shoes have failed the test via a red LED and buzzer alarm. If the shoes pass the test a green LED will indicate to the operator that the shoes are fit for purpose. For those companies that want to interlock the system to certain areas of their facility with entry access or audible alarms, an integral volt free relay contact makes it possible for the system to prevent access to a hazardous area without a pass reading on the tester, indicating that only suitable footwear is being worn upon entry. Track and locate components with RFID solutions from HARTING In order to fully digitise industrial processes, the ability to identify and locate components and tools is incredibly important. For example, it allows production facilities to optimise their processes, railways to speed up their maintenance services and logistics firms to track goods across their facility. A key benefit of using RFID is that, unlike barcodes, you do not need direct line of sight to read the transponder. It’s also possible to get information and data from multiple tags at once, with the high-speed technology allowing you to read up to 300 tags per second. Another advantage for the rail industry is that tags can be read at a distance of several metres, even when trains are travelling at over 120mph. The potting boxes can be punched or drilled as required to suit individual customer requirements. is a very wide series, with models ranging in size from a tiny 11mm x 11mm x 9mm (0.5mm wall thickness) in the PB109 model, right up to the PB106, which measures 100mm x 60mm x 25mm, wall thickness 1.3mm. SICK Extends Flow Sensors Portfolio with T-Easic® Thermal Flow Switch SICK has extended its portfolio of industrial instruments with the SICK T-Easic® FTS, a thermal flow switch designed as an easy, cost-saving answer to detecting liquid flow in pipes, for example in pumps, machine tool lubrication or industrial cleaning systems. Combining both flow and temperature measurement in one IO-Link enabled sensor, the SICK T-Easic® is available in a choice of IP67 industrial or IP69 hygienic stainless-steel versions. Ideal for use with water or oil-based liquids, the T-Easic® can be set up to work with almost any media and is suitable for use with process temperatures between -40°C and 150®C and pressures up to 100 bar. It is therefore a versatile instrument that can be put to work monitoring coolants and lubricants in machine tools, for oil management in hydraulic systems, or for run protection of pumps. It is also ideal for use with Clean-in-Place and Sterilise-in-Place systems in food processing, bottling and pharmaceutical industries. With probe lengths of 60mm, 100mm and 200mm, the SICK T-Easic® can be inserted in pipes from 25mm right up to 400mm in diameter. Unlike many other thermal flow switches, the industrial version with robust VISTAL® housing features a clear OLED 180° rotatable display, making it easy to read when mounted vertically in a pipe or vessel. “The new SICK T-Easic® combines economy and ease of use for essential liquid flow detection and measurement duties, such as protecting pumps from running dry, which could otherwise cause costly damage and downtime to pump and process machinery,” says Darren Pratt, SICK’s UK product manager for Industrial Instrumentation.

“The sensor’s compression mounting adapter; reduced wiring thanks to IO-Link; easy setup, and a low-maintenance, wear-free design, all combine to make the T-Easic® an economical choice for new machinery or as a versatile replacement device to reduce inventories.” With two digital outputs, the sensor monitors measured flow and temperature values and sends a signal to the higher-level machine control when either the high or low switch points are exceeded. On the industrial version the switch points can be adjusted via the onboard display. The measured flow rate and temperature values, as well as diagnostic data are available via the IOLink interface. The sensors are easy to set up with a PC or HMI via IO-Link or using SICK’s SOPAS engineering tool. While factory calibrated values are pre-set for water and oil-based media, nearly any liquid can be taught-in quickly and easily, and device replacement is simple. The SICK T-Easic® FTS thermal flow switch measures flow and temperature using the calorimetric measurement principle. The T-Easic® probe is heated and when liquid flows past the probe, it cools more quickly or slowly depending on the flow speed. In order to restore the temperature difference between the probe and the liquid, a temperature sensor in the probe automatically adjusts the power provided to the heating element. The required heating power is proportional to the flow, therefore providing the measured value. Stay Safe With ATEX Approved Drive Couplings From Reich Safety is always a key consideration in any environment where manufacturing processes or machinery are involved. This topic is even more critical within industries such as petrochemical, refining and mining, where there may be potentially explosive atmospheres. In these critical areas a single spark may be all that is needed to trigger a potentially catastrophic series of events. The European Union’s Atmosphere Explosibles (ATEX) Directives, introduced in 2003 are intended to reduce the hazards created by potentially explosive atmospheres. In this informative article, David Proud – General Manager of Reich Drive Systems UK explains why the company’s ATEX certified MULTI MONT SELLA and ARCUSAFLEX range of drive couplings not only meet these stringent requirements, but also offer enhanced fail-safe characteristics. There are two distinct directives: the first ATEX 95, applies to the design, manufacture and in-service use of equipment within potentially explosive atmospheres. The second directive ATEX 137, sets out the minimum requirements to improve safety and protect workers from explosions. This places specific requirements on employers for risk assessment and implementation of measures to reduce explosion hazards. As a key component in any drive train being used with a hazardous environment, drive couplings must adhere to the ATEX 95 directive. Reich’s MULTI MONT SELLA range not only meets the directive requirements and is certified, but the design of these drive couplings incorporates features which further enhance the fail-safe characteristics of the coupling.

David Proud explains: “In addition to compensating for axial, radial and angular misalignments, shocks and vibrations, these couplings are designed with individual rubber compound saddles. This means that even if one or more of the saddles begins to deteriorate in service, the unit will still operate safely, minimizing the risk of metal-to-metal contact and any subsequent sparks. Although the coupling may exhibit signs of reduced performance, giving maintenance engineers the time to plan remedial work, the coupling will still operate safely.” A further benefit of the MULTI MONT SELLA range is that the rubber saddles can be replaced radially with the coupling in situ, by simply sliding back the retaining cap, saving significant amounts of time by eliminating the need to decouple equipment. Also certified for use within hazardous environments is the ARCUSAFLEX range of couplings. These also comply to explosion protection directive ATEX 95, and are suitable for use within hazardous location categories M2 and 2 which require high levels of protection, and 3 which requires normal levels of protection. David Proud continues: “The ARCUSAFLEX coupling is a highly flexible flywheel coupling with an axial plug-in facility. It provides a torsionally soft connection between the prime mover and the driven machine. The highly flexible torque transmission characteristic of the coupling is achieved by a disc-shaped rubber element that is subjected to a torsional load and enables both, the absorption of high torsional vibrations and the compensation of major misalignments. Weighing the benefits of a loading arm over traditional hose assemblies One of Dixon’s newest product developments is our loading arm which can be configured and built to a customer’s specification. Dixon’s loading arms are engineered for long life performance as well as ease of use in the field and can be used to overcome some of the typical issues and complications faced in the transfer of liquids. Loading arms are becoming the standard choice over hoses for certain applications in refineries, chemical plants, food & beverage processing plants, rail terminals and truck terminals. There are many variables involved in making the decision to purchase a loading arm. They can be based on application, material, location, site limitations, etc. Safety should always be considered first when protecting your most important asset, your employees. Is a loading arm actually a safer option than a standard hose assembly? It is important to review key factors and examine the impact on safety when looking to make a choice between the two.

Weight & the benefits of a counter balance What is the media that is being transferred? Is the weight of the hose an issue? A 4 inch hose assembly filled with liquid could potentially weigh 6kg per metre. In this situation you could be asking your employees to drag a 100kg, 6 metre hose assembly. This could contribute to a high potential for back injuries and worker compensation injury claims. Even if the hose was shorter it would still add a significant amount of strain and stress on the worker. Switching this application to a loading arm would reduce the chance of an injury tremendously. The counterbalance mechanism of a loading arm

is designed to balance the weight and do the heavy lifting for you and, combined with a handle, it becomes a very ergonomic solution. The design of the Dixon loading arm incorporates an additional safety factor by having a steel housing for the Counterbalance torsion spring rather than the conventional plastic housing for better durability and long life performance. The unique counterbalance adjustment mechanism allows the torsion spring to be safely adjusted easily and quickly without having to remove the housing. While not intended for adjustment under load the Dixon design allows for this once the weight of the arm is supported by simply turning the adjustment bolt to increase or reduce the tension on the spring.

Repetitive Tasks Are the tasks being performed repetitive? A loading arm will be mounted and have a distinct range of motion. A hose can be maneuvered more flexibly, although this movement is typically done by having an employee drag the hose around manually. If the location of the connection point

involves consistent location, such as at a fuel terminal, a loading arm application would be the best choice. This application will last longer than a standard hose assembly due to the loading arm being suspended where it can not drag on the ground like a hose can. Many times a hose that is used on a consistent basis can only last weeks or months while a loading arm can last years or even tens of years with proper maintenance. Loading arms can be rebuilt so they can last decades by adding replacement parts and removing the old parts while the entire hose assembly will be replaced when it can no longer function properly.

Environment Are your hoses causing a tripping hazard? Are employees constantly having to step over or go around the hose assembly? A loading arm removes these hazards because they are mounted off the ground. They can be articulated into a folded position, out of the way to provide a cleaner, less-hazardous environment. Are your hoses continuously being dragged? This can cause hoses to wear and burst, causing a spill. If the media is potentially hazardous this could be even more serious than a minor spill clean up.

Fasteners for Machinery

What do Industry 4.0 and elite sport have in common? Did you watch the Cricket World Cup, the Rugby World Cup, The Women’s World Cup, Wimbledon Tennis or premier golf? You will have seen athletes at the top of their game. But spare a thought for the ground staff and the kit they use.

Better machine building When you are thinking about designing a new machine, especially a machine designed for a Smart Factory, the cost of fasteners is unlikely to be a critical factor. But the wrong choice can lead to complications when the machine is assembled - which may add real costs. They might suggest that all you need is a low cost cable tie. But they also offer a range of more sophisticated Cable Ties and Cable Management Fasteners along with Glands, Lock Nuts and O-rings. Sometimes JET PRESS will find a low cost off the shelf solution, but some applications require bespoke fasteners. For some customers JET PRESS pre-assembles and delivers solutions.

Maintenance made easier Maybe in Industry 5.0 machines will be maintained by robots, but for now it’s still done by humans. This means removing things like panels and guards. For heavy guards, JET PRESS

customers often use Accuride Slides or Gas Struts for ease of access. For smaller panels, bolts or screws may be the right solution, but not always. JET PRESS often recommends Bi-Fix Quarter Turn Fasteners for access panels. XAAR’S 5-STEP SERVICE ENABLES EFFECTIVE INK JET FLUID EVALUATION FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING APPLICATIONS The service aims to help companies establish the suitability of inkjet technology and fluids in new applications without incurring large upfront costs. To support the new service, Xaar has invested in a dedicated laboratory. This is equipped with a number of custom test rigs for sample production and fluid testing including a Notion Systems n.jet 3D printer. Each new project starts with the initial fluid evaluation where guidance is provided on issues such as ink development and material compatibility as well as options for complex rheology testing and fluid physicals measurement. Stage 2 moves to jetting optimisation encompassing printhead waveform configuration, alongside application and fluid optimisation. Stage 3 involves actual sample production utilising one of the custom test rigs. 3D and other advanced sample production is made possible using a Notions Systems n.jet printer and Xaar 1003 GS12 printheads. This Photopolymer Jetting (PPJ) machine

is capable of printing layers between 0.0185mm – 0.0025mm taking approximately 6 seconds per layer, enabling features as small as 0.1mm.

Bringing thermal imaging advantages to the single point pyrometer market Precision sensor manufacturer Micro-Epsilon has introduced two thermal imagers for industrial environments that are both compact and robust, offering advanced thermal imaging functions at a price level normally associated with single point pyrometers. The entry level thermoIMAGER TIM 8 features an 80x80 pixel resolution, 50Hz frame rate and autonomous operation that offers automatic hot or cold spot detection. As an imager, the TIM8 gives more freedom to check and look for faults. It isn’t reliant on the target being in the same place and can detect hot (cold) spots anywhere within its field of view. Once set up and configuration are complete by the included software, the TIM 8 is then capable of standalone operation without a PC connected, combining the advantages of a robust pyrometer with those of an infrared thermal imaging camera. Automatic hot and cold spot detection in automation, machine building and plant monitoring increases process reliability. The thermoIMAGER TIM 8 is specially designed for these types of application. The measured temperature can be output directly as an analogue signal or as a digital alarm output. Another feature of the camera is its integrated lens and motorised focus. The focus adjustment is software-controlled enabling the operator to set the target in focus without having to touch the camera – ideal if it is mounted in a hard-to-reach area. With three selectable temperature measurement ranges from -20°C to +900°C, the TIM 8 can be used, for example, to monitor the temperature in control cabinets, process control in production lines or to detect overheated, baked goods. When the pre-defined alarm threshold is reached, an alert signal is output via the integrated process interface. Setup is intuitive via the well-established TIMConnect configuration software, available as a free download from the Micro-Epsilon website. Communication with the camera is made by USB or Ethernet connection. A range of accessories are also available including air purge collars, protective windows and cooling housings, which enable the TIM 8 device to be installed in a wide range of industrial environments and is ideal for OEM customers looking to integrate more than just a pyrometer. For users who require an even greater optical resolution and frame rates for temperature monitoring of high speed thermal processes, Micro-Epsilon has also introduced the thermoIMAGER TIM 40 to its range. This robust industrial camera offers excellent optical resolution (382 x 288 pixels), a frame rate of 80Hz and an effective distance-to-spot-size ratio of 390:1. Selectable temperature ranges are from -20°C to +100°C/ 0 to 250°C/ 150°C to 900°C.

The TIM 40 also incorporates a motorised focus for easy adjustments on targets via remote control. Power supply and operation are via USB connection. With multiple measurement outputs available via the optional industrial process interface, this also makes the camera ideal for high volume OEM applications.

Stäubli Robots Drive Growth In Automotive Lithium-Ion Battery Pack Production The growth in the number of electric and hybrid vehicles available today demonstrates the automotive industry’s determination to act upon environmental concerns. Electric vehicles (EV’s) with their low or zero emissions are definitely becoming a highly strategic part of many OEMs' business strategies. This continued growth in demand for electric vehicles brings with it the need for a huge supply of the lithiumion batteries required to produce the power packs. In keeping with the automotive sector’s philosophy of automating manufacturing processes, battery production also needs to be automated, not only to keep pace with demand, but also to ensure the high standards of quality and safety required. Stäubli robots are already recognised within the electrical and electronics sectors for their precision, performance and reliability, and this has led to a natural progression into battery manufacturing applications. In this article, Simon Jenkins - Sales Manager for Stäubli Robotics expands on the different areas where the company’s robots are playing a leading role in the manufacture of lithium-Ion battery packs. Re-chargeable batteries have been with us for some time and are present in many of our every-day home items including our phones, laptops, vacuum cleaners and power tools. The technology within these items is very similar to that now being used in many electric and hybrid cars, where the batteries are of the lithium-ion type. However the battery packs in vehicles contain significantly higher numbers of individual cells to produce the power, and deliver the longevity needed, to make electric vehicles viable.

With the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for electric and hybrid vehicles alone estimated at around 35%, not to mention the increase in manufacture of energy storage facilities, which also use similar technology, it is clear that there is, and will continue to be for some time, a very high demand for lithium-Ion battery technology. Lithium-Ion batteries come in a number of forms including Prismatic, Cylindrical and Pouch, however for automotive applications, the individual cells are predominately of the cylindrical variety, typically 3.7 volts and 2600mAh. Simon Jenkins explains the different processes where Stäubli robots are playing an increasingly important role. “The battery pack in an electric vehicle comprises of a number of battery modules, which in turn are made up from individual battery cells. Some EV’s may have around 3,000 individual battery cells, so as you can imagine automation plays a key role in the manufacture of these items.” Simon Jenkins continues: “Depending upon the specific configuration of the automated production system, the applications for our robots can differ. The typical process steps where our robots add value include: initial unpacking of individual cells, handling and transferring cells through cleaning, voltage and resistance testing, laser marking and

segregation of any reject cells, before good cells are assembled into module bases” The demand for battery packs, although significant from the major OEM’s, is just one of the growth factors within this sector. The development of increasing numbers of autonomous vehicles, together with a move towards replacing conventional petrol and diesel powered last mile delivery transport with electric powered alternatives will continue to place greater demand on battery manufacturers. According to Stäubli’s Simon Jenkins “The EV revolution opens up tremendous opportunities for Stäubli, as our existing range of field proven robots dovetail neatly into this demanding production environment. In addition to the cleanliness, speed and precision, for which our systems are already renowned, we have recently introduced ESD compliant versions of some of our range, which makes them ideally suited for both applications in battery manufacture and motor assembly.”

Cobots versus industrial robots ~ What’s the difference? ~ Buying a new robot is a considerable investment for any business owner. Collaborative robots have been widely marketed as a cheaper alternative to industrial robots, but what’s the catch? Nigel Smith, president and CEO of Toshiba Machine partner TM Robotics, explains the crucial differences between these two robot types. Upfront costs Let’s kick things off with the collaborative robot, or ‘cobot’ as they are commonly called. The term cobot has been coined to represent an unguarded, easy to integrate collection of robots that typically carry out repetitive or unsafe tasks while the human workforce performs higher-value manual tasks up or downstream. In terms of upfront costs, most cobots are cheaper than traditional, industrial robots. These low costs have provided smaller businesses with accessibility to robots, which in itself is something to be celebrated. However, that doesn’t mean all small businesses need to opt for a cobot to board the automation train. The alternative is industrial robots. Think SCARA, 6-axis or cartesian models. These are heavy duty robots with high payloads that can tackle dangerous, repetitive and heavy applications. These robots are commonly used for parts assembly, pick and place and palletizing in many different industries — and they have been for decades.

Generally, industrial robots cost more upfront but can provide entirely different levels of performance. Plus, there’s much more to consider than the first financial transaction. Firstly, pricing structures are changing, meaning industrial robots are now a becoming more viable option for small businesses. TM Robotics’ is a good example of this. The company’s new pricing structure puts the company’s range of Toshiba Machine SCARA robots as the performance leader of the low-cost end of the market. The company’s latest SCARA model for instance, the THE400, can provide manufacturers 40 per cent faster speed compared with competing models in this price range. Using this model, the company can ensure small businesses and those that are new to automation, aren’t priced out of the robot market. Cost of ownership Whether we’re discussing cobots or industrial robots, a challenge for small to medium sized manufacturers is

determining the actual cost of ownership when investing in automation. These are the additional costs of maintenance, energy consumption and additional equipment requirements that enable the safe usage of the robot. For example, a risk assessment may determine a cobot needs extra fencing, or force limiters, if it is to be used safely alongside humans. This is a very common occurrence for misinformed cobot purchasers. Manufacturers would be forgiven to believe that cobots are automatically safe to use alongside humans, but this isn’t always the case. The risk assessment, and the heavy fees for additional safety equipment, can leave manufacturers thinking, ‘why didn’t we just buy an industrial robot for all this money we’ve spent?’ Cost of energy consumption also needs to be evaluated against the production output. Gestamp delighted by unexpected benefits from new RO System Llanelli based Gestamp, a leading designer, developer and manufacturer of metal automotive components, is benefitting from significant environmental and process improvements following a decision to invest in Reverse Osmosis technology for its low conductivity process water generation requirements. As part of its Vision to promote sustainable economic and social development, Gestamp was primarily looking for a cleaner and cost-effective water treatment process to replace an ageing chemically activated ion exchange system. Gestamp contacted filtration specialists Axium Process to discuss the suitability of Reverse Osmosis for the application and after comparing the benefits of the technology against the ion exchange process, made the decision to proceed with an Axium standard reverse osmosis system. Equipment reliability, short delivery time, technical support and service backup were considered important elements in the scope of supply. “We chose an Axium RO system because the technology is safer to operate, eliminates bulk chemical and 86|

disposal costs and does not present a toxic pollution hazard to the environment. After using the Plant for a number of months we are happy to report unexpected benefits such as enhanced paint finish resulting from improved water quality, as well as less downtime because the system requires

minimal maintenance and has been programmed to selfclean” reports Simon White, Gestamp’s plant technician. Designed for ease of operation and low maintenance, Axium’s standard RO systems primarily remove salts and particulates from a variety of water sources providing a

reliable, stable source of high-quality water that can be used for many industrial and process applications. The systems are supplied as standard with high rejection low energy membranes, multiple sample points, conductivity monitor, level sensors, feed pressure switch and an inverter controlled pump.
