Bluetooth – back to the future? With the launch of a number of devices across the industry, is process industry ready for instrument adjustment and diagnosis with Smartphones or Tablets? Wireless communication for industrial field transmitters has been a popular topic over recent years, with as many pro’s and cons as there are standards. But what about using an accessible and simple means of instrument set up and operation using a smartphone or tablet? Bluetooth has been a familiar feature in our everyday lives for many years now. For instance, every modern car has hands-free phone and music, keyboards and mice, remote controls, televisions and portable speaker systems in our homes are all using this communication protocol to increase safety and provide convenience. It’s secure too, every day, in shops and restaurants, we put debit and credit cards into wireless payment terminals that use Bluetooth communication for securely transmitting sensitive financial information. Now it is beginning to find its way into the process industry. This technology has the potential to configure, adjust, analyse and retrieve data in sensors from a safe distance using every day devices, whether they are supplied by the company or the users ‘own’. ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) is becoming a more familiar term in our language, not just at the ‘hi-tech’ companies. In industry it is emerging and already available on products like data loggers, controllers, analytical systems and valve positioners, now it is also being introduced to field transmitters for set up, monitoring and asset management. This is facilitated by the development and implementation of Bluetooth 4.0, which is now low power enough to be used on ‘loop powered’ field based sensors.

Security? This is probably the first and foremost question. Bluetooth communications are founded on three procedures:

04|

Authentication & Authorization - This is the process of determining who is at the other end of a Bluetooth link and if their device should have access to yours. Encryption & Data Protection - Bluetooth encrypts your data (128 bit) and only allows approved devices to decrypt it, making it much more difficult to for unauthorized users to capture and decipher your information. Privacy & Confidentiality - In addition to encrypting the data being transmitted, the latest Bluetooth 4.0 also makes it possible to encrypt the address of the Bluetooth device itself.

Safer for inhospitable or dangerous areas, locations and industries Heat, dirt, noise, dust or gases (or even just horrible weather!) are just some of the hazards to personnel out in the process plant. Bluetooth 4.0 has a range typically around 25m, further, (50m+) in clear areas, enabling devices to be accessed and operated from a more secure, sheltered position. Another reason can be the location or position of the device itself, this can avoid prolonged awkward working positions, working at heights or even reduced exposure risk to harsh/toxic chemicals. These challenges all offer strong safety and productivity benefits to the user.

Hazardous Area use Smart phones and tablets with Hazardous Area cases and approvals are also becoming both more commonplace and affordable. Up until now, any sensor requiring set up in a hazardous area needs either key pads on or adjacent to the transmitter, via specialist communicator devices, or it can be done via remote communication methods such as HART protocol, with typically a handheld terminal or PC. But this is not always practical, it requires opening of housings, connection into junction boxes or cabinets (with associated time consuming ‘Hot work permits’), and the communication speeds can sometimes be slow. As Bluetooth carries no energy in itself, as long as the communication devices

at each end (e.g. sensor and smart phone) are appropriately protected and certified, there is no compromising of the hazardous area. Alternatively, with a 25m+ range, the Smartphone can also be used from a place of designated safety.

Back to the future! VEGA PLICSCOM universal display and adjustment module now has a Bluetooth and ATEX certified version. This is secure and encrypted, on/off switchable communication for both Android/IOS smartphone/tablet set up and diagnosis. Amazingly, it is also fully backward compatible with all plics® level and pressure transmitters manufactured since 2002, it can be easily retrofitted without any software update. There is also a Bluetooth dongle for PC connection via FDT/DTM / PACTware. These options offer a great opportunity for existing users to try out the future today. Download the VEGA Tools App at IOS or Android store or find out more at www.vega.com/radar under ‘Wireless Adjustment’.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BANDSAW REDUCES CUTTING TIMES BY UP TO 50% German metal sawing and storage equipment manufacturer, KASTO, has introduced a new, high performance, economically priced bandsaw, called KASTOwin pro AC 5.6, said to offer short cutting times, long blade life and intuitive operation. Availability in the UK and Ireland is through the company’s Milton Keynes subsidiary. The automatic machine is optimised to extract the best possible performance from either a bimetal or tungsten carbide tipped (TCT) blade. It is ideally suited to a wide range of applications cutting solid material, tubes and profiles, particularly in steel production and stockholding, machine manufacturing and the automotive industry. The bandsaw can significantly increase production speed and efficiency. Depending on the type of blade and the material being cut, processing times can routinely be reduced by up to 50 percent and more in some instances. An important feature of the KASTOwin pro AC 5.6 is its innovative, electromechanical downfeed. It is controlled via two ballscrews, each with a servo drive, for precise, infinitely variable control. There is a retraction unit for separating the blade from the material to protect the cut surface when the saw head moves back. It also helps to minimise tool wear. The drive unit and sensor are separate from the working area, ensuring reliable, trouble-free operation. Access to the machine is good, despite compliance with CE safety standards. The saw band is driven by an 11 kW, frequencycontrolled motor, delivering infinitely adjustable cutting speeds from 12 to 150 m/min and providing plenty of capacity for TCT sawing. Helping to dampen vibration are ‘Trum’ guides mounted at the return side of the blade, inside

14|

the top of the saw head guarding. They suppress vibration on the side opposite from the cutting action, promoting accurate sawing and prolonging tool life. Maximum cutting capacity is 560 mm and the smallest dimension that can be cut is 25 mm x 25 mm. The band guide arm adjusts automatically to material width. Shortest residual length is 10 mm for individual offcuts and 35 mm in automatic operation, enabling operators to minimise waste. Two electrically driven, plastic brushes keep the teeth free from chips. They are easy to replace and are automatically adjusted throughout their service life. Having an installed weight of 4.3 tonnes and a rigid welded structure with vibration-optimised ribbing, the KASTOwin pro AC 5.6 ensures quiet operation, short processing times and accurate cutting. A powerful coolant pump and large reservoir serve to reduce wear on the teeth further, especially when sawing difficult-to-machine materials. The bandsaw comes with EasyControl, a highperformance control unit that is easy to use and reduces idle times in automatic operation for maximum output. All parameters can be optimised to match the type of blade and the material being cut. Email: sales@uk.kasto.com Web: www.kasto.com

Tips for manually testing your food metal detectors By Phil Brown, European Sales Director, Fortress Technology

Metal detection testing procedures must be clearly documented and communicated to all relevant staff. In accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, testing should take place regularly, usually hourly, and between each product changeover. Intervals between tests need to be short enough that if a fault is found, products potentially affected have not left your premises and can be identified, recalled and retested. The costs of conducting these tests manually on such a regular basis can be high. Automatic testing tackles this drain on resources and helps to eliminate the risk of human error. For example, in one day, each metal detector system manually tested at least five times each day, may cost a manufacturer around £250 a day in machine downtime and testing time, especially in pipeline and gravity applications. 20|

Tip 2: When making test packs use fresh products, as degradation can affect the product’s characteristics

To ensure more reliable manual metal detector tests: 1. Place test samples in the CENTRE of the aperture, the least sensitive spot. This is highly unlikely to be sitting on top of your product pack, or on the top of the conveyor belt. Test samples should be inserted into your product to ensure it passes through the centreline of the aperture. 2. USE good, fresh product. Remember that product characteristics, packaging and size will likely affect the detection level, so use the actual product your metal detector is inspecting. And when making test packs, use fresh product, especially for packed vegetables, salad or meat, as degradation can affect the product’s characteristics. Before inserting the sample, pre-check the packs to ensure they are free of metal contaminants. 3. Check ALL 3 metal samples – ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel. Because they are all detected at different levels, even if one metal sample is picked up, that doesn’t necessarily mean the integrity of the detector is proven. To ensure you are detecting stainless steel contaminants that are commonplace in food production machinery, use a non-magnetic 3 series (i.e. 316) stainless steel sample. 4. Test using REALISTIC production conditions, including speed and the way products are presented. This ensures that your reject mechanism is operating correctly. Automatic reject systems must prove that it is rejecting the pack effectively, regardless of where the sample is located (e.g. front of pack or back of pack). An automatic test system must also ensure that subsequent packs are not damaged or trapped, or ignoring consecutive contaminated packs. Even belt stop systems should be checked to ensure contaminated packs are held at the point where an operative can recover them. www.fortresstechnology.co.uk

Procurement Issues? invite us back again and again:

Finding out what the market has to offer can be a tricky business. It takes time, that costs money, and often it adds complication and uncertainty. It ought to be a simpler process… BVAA can help!

‘Can’t see the Wood for the Trees’ Few of us have time to devote to endless hours of supplier visits (potential, or existing), or to rove endlessly around the diminishing number of industry exhibitions, often in far flung places. Even trawling the internet can take hours, and then you have all the uncertainties of trying to do business with a new and unknown entity. But the breadth and depth of alternative sources of supply almost certainly could save many customers a great deal of work, heartache or indeed cash – possibly all three at once! So how do you see the wood for the trees?

Desktop Exhibitions BVAA recognized some years ago, the need for buyers and users of valves and actuators to have the industry come to them. They have particular constraints that mean getting away from the office is a nonstarter, and exhibition attendance is just wistful thinking. In many cases, the sheer number of people in the organisation needing to find out the information can also be quite large. The number of lost man-hours for what could be a few minutes of fruitful – perhaps repetitive - dialogue would be immense! That’s why BVAA introduced our ‘Desktop’ events. As the name implies these are mini exhibitions put on inside the user/

22|

customer’s own premises. We can take pretty well any available space; and with a few tables, pop-up banners, literature and product samples, plus of course true technical experts on hand; we can have a fully-functioning mini exhibition up in moments. Slick, no fuss, in and out with ease.

And at no cost to host. We typically put our events on over the lunchtime to avoid any downtime and where possible also provide lunch for all the visitors so they still have an opportunity to eat as they peruse the event. We are also able to tailor the events to the specific needs of the host. Want to see established oil and gas suppliers only? – no problem. Must already be on the company AVL? We can do that. Or maybe just the opposite - only potential new sources? All and more are possible the host decides.

Size is NOT Important The beauty of Desktops is their flexibility, and the host doesn’t need to be a super-sized operator or contract engineering company. BVAA will happily arrange smaller events for customers who have more modest projects, say process plants etc., or who just want to see what the market has to offer. BVAA welcomes all – the events are equally useful for up and coming engineers for education purposes, as well as the senior procurement experts and specifiers. We can even arrange for some complimentary BVAA Technical Training to be delivered in conjunction with the event. We have a very long list of satisfied hosts, many of whom

But Don’t Just Take our Word for It! Here is what our hosts say: ‘Thanks to BVAA, we were able to hold a fantastic event that gave our engineers and procurement specialists an excellent opportunity to study the valve & actuator industry up close and had the chance to question the experts in person over a few light refreshments. I was really pleased to see a great turnout across both our offices and I have received a lot of positive feedback from colleagues to say how much they learnt. We are very grateful to BVAA for all their hard work in organising this event and for bringing along their excellent Valve and Actuator Users’ Manual, which was so popular that we had to ask for more copies.’

KBR Procurement Specialist ‘The exhibition was well received within AMEC and we had a very good turnout on the day. It is important to us to keep staff up-to-date on the latest technological and mechanical innovations. BVAA managed the event very professionally, we are very thankful to Rob and his team’

Permanent Remote Asset Monitoring Assures Increased Reliability The solution can combine multiple devices, including optional fixed thermal imagers and fixed single point infrared pyrometers, for the most comprehensive system solution for monitoring electric power substations. Data Automation Users

and

Informing

Each TS724DV-PT system also includes a stainless steel junction box with all of the necessary hardware for power and data transfer, including a hardened umbilical cable to easily connect the camera to the junction box. This cable serves as the communication link from the camera to the controller and allows for quick access to the camera’s thermal readings and configuration options.

Conditioned-based maintenance (CBM) is essential for electric utilities and most utilities have initiatives and investments to realize these goals. The use of thermography is a well-proven technique for monitoring conditions and detecting faults in electrical equipment by using non-contact measuring devices, safely, even while the equipment is in operation.

Automated & Remote Imaging Monitoring

Especially for aged electrical power substations, the potential for faults or the complete failure of these devices due to their age increases.

This system allows utilities to continuously monitor the temperature profile and long-term thermal trends of assets within an electrical power substation remotely in real time.

Electric utilities need an automated, data-driven method to analyze electrical equipment, allowing for continuous and online monitoring providing early warnings in due time prior to critical incidents happen. By deploying thermal imaging systems at critical locations throughout the electrical power distribution system, electric utilities have continuous, online monitoring without the personnel constraints and limited resources.

28|

Thermal

Designed with advanced maintenance-free electronics, the ThermalSpection™ 724 system offers a high degree of accuracy while measuring asset temperature without contact in even the most adverse environments.

The ThermalSpection™ 724 Dual Vision – Pan Tilt (TS724 DV-PT) system includes both thermal and visual imagers in a hardened enclosure on a positioner with a continuous 360° pan range and tilt range of ±45°. The enclosure protects the cameras from weather and temperature changes and uses a solid state cooling system for reliable, long-term installation.

The local controller can be a utilityapproved computer or a server from LumaSense which will run the included LumaSpec RT software. This software allows the user to define automated “inspection tours” of the substation or industrial setting to monitor multiple areas. Operators can also use the software pan and tilt controls for manual positioning. Data from the controller is also published to existing data historians, for example PI from OSIsoft, using Modbus or OPC protocols. Realizing CBM using fully automated data collection and analysis While the ThermalSpection 724 system is a very accurate and reliable solution especially for substations and electrical switchgear monitoring of bushings, isolators, breakers, transformers aso., it is also used in industrial settings such as detecting hot spots in fuel storage facilities or monitoring for degradation of refractory in high temperature furnaces and vessels. Just be smart Low energy Bluetooth data loggers facilitate real-time supervision of constantly changing temperatures via mobile devices

K

eeping an eye on temperature data has never been easier: T&D Corporation, Japanese market leader for wireless data loggers, has developed a new generation of devices. The TR4 series data loggers automatically collect temperature data and use low energy Bluetooth 4.0 to send it to any iOS/Android device. The loggers are automatically detected without the need for pre-registration. Data can be collected from multiple loggers simultaneously. Two dedicated apps make it easy to monitor temperatures 24 hours a day and enable instant saving and sharing of collected data: The ThermoREC app collects data and displays it in neatly arranged graphs and tables, while the ThermoStorage app uploads data to T&D’s cloud, the WebStorage Service. Every account has at its disposal 20 MB of free storage space, which offers enough capacity to save for example about 7.000 days of recorded data when using a TR42 logger at a recording interval of one minute. For added reassurance, a special auto archiving function makes sure that data files are zipped and archived before this limit is reached. To prevent unauthorized access to stored data, users receive a unique ID and password after registration. Should data need to be shared, access can be established by setting up a “read-only ID” that enables data to be viewed but not modified or deleted. Each TR4 logger can be set to 15 different recording intervals, from one second to 60 minutes, and has a logging capacity of up to 16.000 readings. Battery life is up to one and a half years. The TR4 series comprises three competitively priced models, two of them waterproof. With various sensor types and measurement ranges, these new

30|

generation devices serve diverse application requirements: the TR41 covers temperature measurements from -40 to 80°C (waterproof, internal sensor); the TR42 measures from -60 to 155°C (waterproof, external sensor), while the TR45 for industrial use is available for thermocouple types K, J, T and S, covering -199 to 1.700°C, as well as for types Pt 100/Pt 1000 with a range of between -199 and 600°C. Thanks to this broad spectrum of measurement capabilities, the TR4 series offers huge flexibility for multiple applications. To name just a few opportunities, the devices

can be utilized for heating control in housing, climatic control of agricultural sites as well as for safeguarding refrigerators, sales cabinets and storage facilities. Their special features make them ideal for supervising transportation of sensitive goods like fresh or frozen food and products for medical use. Real-time monitoring of constantly changing data has never been so smart. Company Contact: T&D Corporation European Sales Office europe.office@tandd.de www.tandd.com

ENGINEERING  PDATE

Semta Interview: Q&A with Anne Watson Engineering Update’s Tim Johnston interviews Semta’s Chief executive Ann Watson

32|

March 2017

Q A Q A

Q A Q A

Ann, Thank you firstly for your time. My first question is in regards to the very positive feedback we have had from UK Manufacturers for 2017. What are your thoughts on this year’s forecast and how can we ensure another strong year for UK Engineers? A strong 2017 for UK engineering means protecting and enhancing our global reputation for quality and innovation above all else. With the new Industrial Strategy and technical education reforms putting advanced manufacturing, engineering and STEM at their heart, our sector has a great opportunity to play a pivotal role in the UK’s continuing prosperity. The UK’s top engineering firms are amongst the world’s best, and I’m confident that they start from a strong foundation as they enter 2017. March is going to be a very testing month for our industry. Post Brexit Britain will be a challenge for us all. How will we steer ourselves in the right direction and keep our position within the global Engineering industry? The fall in the pound has led to a recent boom in UK advanced manufacturing exports, which is good news. However, although we’ve seen a short-term boost, we have a lot of work to do to safeguard the global standing of UK engineering in a post-Brexit world – remember, the UK hasn’t even begun to actually leave the EU yet. The top priority simply must be skills – if exports are to keep increasing the sector will need to grow its skills base, but there are continuing skills shortages across a number of occupations and a number of sub-sectors as it is. We need to sell the good news stories coming out of UK engineering and encourage as many new entrants to our sector’s workforce as we can. Semta cannot be thanked enough for their impact on bringing through young engineers. How do we get more young people involved in the Engineering sector ?

We need to sell the good news stories coming out of UK engineering and encourage as many new entrants to our sector’s workforce as we can.

It’s actually quite simple, at least in theory – we need to tell more of them about the amazing career opportunities that are available in our sector. That means we need to strengthen careers advice in schools – so we eagerly await the government’s upcoming Careers Strategy. It also means we need to do better as a sector at selling ourselves, especially to underrepresented groups – our latest research report, Engineering Skills for the Future, examines in closer detail what all of us within engineering can do to encourage more girls to join us. And we need to be far better at communicating to young people exactly what engineering is, as the old stereotype of a man in greasy overalls working in a filthy workshop stubbornly remains. We need to show young people that modern engineering offers them the chance to be creative and inventive, and that a career in engineering can offer them the chance to shape the world around them – everything they touch has been engineered - their phones, their games consoles and their bikes – we need to get that message across. We’ve seen the great work the IAC have been doing and their work with Semta . Is there anything our readers could do to get involved and help with this programme?

The IAC has been doing a fantastic job as a strong and effective voice for engineering apprentices. The 2016 annual report has been quoted on the floor of the House of Commons, it’s been responded to by the Minister and the policy proposals contained within are influencing the ongoing debate as the government’s reforms take shape. I would encourage your readers to firstly read the 2016 report and champion it as widely as they can, as it packs a real punch and contains some very interesting – and in some cases concerning – research. Secondly, I would encourage readers to promote the 2017 IAC annual survey to their networks and to every apprentice they know, as the more responses it gets the stronger the 2017 report will be. It’s now open to apprentices from all sectors across the UK. And thirdly, I would ask readers to encourage the apprentices they know to consider getting involved with the IAC as members – again, apprentices from all sectors will be considered. Height Adjustable Packing Machine

German company Steffes Pruf- und Messtechnik wanted to develop an innovative packaging system to expand its automation division and looked to the mk Technology Group to provide the solution.

D

ue to space limitations the customer required a height adjustable and compact system. For several decades Steffes have used the mk aluminium profile system as the basis for all of their machines. Experience has shown them the benefit of using the components and modules of this modular system as they can easily and quickly be changed or adjusted at a later date. mk were able to provide a design that met the requirements both flexibly and economically. The S-PACKPAL-T is a fully automatic machine for packaging various empty containers (eg bottles, cans, canisters) in cardboard trays and subsequent palletizing of the trays on a pallet. In addition to being robust, safe and easy to use the machine needed to have a packing height of 3m. A compact, boxshaped frame was necessary so that it can be transported easily on a lorry or a maritime container.

34|

The required height of 3 meters turned out to be a major obstacle as the ceiling height on the assembly area at Steffes did not facilitate the option to build such a tall machine! The answer was to build a telescopic frame which could be extended by a further 1.5 meters. It was not only the telescopic frame of the system, but also components such as conveyors, frames and guarding, doors, windows and the gripper for the cardboard trays which were built from the mk system. After the concept of the packaging system was fully developed, the first prototype was put into service by the client in a semi-automatic version. This was considered a huge success and a little later two more machines followed as a fully automatic version. Mechanical Flow meters are back After Forty years of manufacturing in Sydney- Australia by Macnaught Pty , a decision to stop production of M-Series mechanical display flow meters in favour of digital models was taken last year. This has now been reversed for 2017 following a review of global distributor feedback and resurgence in customer demand. Oval gear meters are widely recognised as one of the most versatile principles of flow measurement, with their ability to accurately meter a broad range of low to high viscosity fluids without the need for flow conditioning. Incorporating this unique oval rotor principle into its design has enabled M-SERIES positive displacement flow meters from Macnaught to offer proven reliability and excellent levels of accuracy and repeatability. including a rugged design that minimises the number of wearable and replaceable parts and extends product life, easily fitted and operated mechanical registers, flexibility of installation options; meters can be mounted horizontally or vertically without flow conditioning and they exert minimal pressure drop allowing for economical pump selection or gravity flow applications.

40|

With moving parts inside the meter body limited to a pair of oval gear rotors, maintenance is minimal. Unlike more complicated technologies M-SERIES can be quickly and easily disassembled, serviced and reassembled whilst still in the line without the need for special tools or training. The M-SERIES model range covers sizes from ½” to 4” with flow rates from 2 to 1200 LPM and an accuracy reading of +/-0.5%. Offering a choice of construction materials ensures effective use in industrial applications with a wide range of fluid viscosities. www.macnaught.com.au/m-series

AQE announces agenda for Air Quality Conference

The organisers of AQE 2017, the international Air Quality and Emissions Show (Telford, UK, 24-25th May) have published the programme for Day 2 of the event. Developed in partnership with IAPSC (Investigation of Air Pollution Standing Conference), there will be three sessions covering: pervasive air quality monitoring; vehicle emissions monitoring and data management; and local air quality management and policy. “The High Court has instructed the UK Government to produce draft plans on how it will tackle air pollution in

46|

the UK’s towns and cities, and these are likely to be published in April, so AQE 2017 is perfectly timed,” comments AQE organiser Marcus Pattison. “The speakers will address the major role that monitoring can perform in helping to identify effective air quality improvement measures, such as those identified in the recent NICE guidelines. As part of its consultation process, NICE is looking for evidence of successful measures and specifically rules out studies which rely exclusively on modelling, so there will be a greater emphasis on monitoring.” Speakers from academia, local authorities and industry will provide delegates with the latest information on technologies, air quality strategy, and best practice in traffic-related pollution issues. The presentations will include cases studies on the deployment of monitors as well as initiatives to reduce pollution in urban areas, and on the collection and presentation of air quality data.

Air quality is also affected by industrial emissions, so the first day of AQE 2017 will focus on industrial emissions monitoring - regulations, standards, methods and technologies, and the agenda for this day will be published shortly. Visitors to AQE 2017 will also benefit from the opportunity to attend an Exhibition with more than 90 stands featuring many of the world’s leading organisations in air quality monitoring; providing a unique opportunity to see all of the latest developments in instrumentation and monitoring services. In addition, registered visitors will be able to attend over 50 free walk-in workshops, mostly provided by exhibitors, addressing a wide variety of monitoring themes including ambient air quality, stack emissions, process gas, occupational safety, fugitive emissions and boundary monitoring. March 2017

The Utility Week Live 2017 transformation leaders and technologies For all utilities, transformation and flexibility are not optional as they face the challenges ahead: they are the key to survival. Driving this change in culture are a number of people, whilst a number of key technologies will enable and shape the utilities’ transformation and increasing flexibility. Utility Week Live 2017 has identified the 10 most important transformation leaders and technologies, as voted for by the industry themselves. Key People The ten individuals set out have embraced innovation and driving change in their respective companies, across the sector, and more widely. They are the leaders in the transformation the utilities are undergoing towards becoming more flexible, sustainable and suitable for the new world we’re all heading towards. These people are: Basil Scarsella, chief executive, UK Power Networks; Ben Jeffs, director and chief executive, MOSL; Cathryn Ross, chief executive, Ofwat; Cheryl Latham, chief executive, Brighter World Energy; Dermot Nolan, chief executive, Ofgem; Piers Clark, founder and chairman, Isle Utilities; Elon Musk, founder and products architect, Tesla and chairman, SolarCity; John Reynolds, chief executive, Castle Water; Simon Harrison, group strategic development manager, Mott MacDonald, and chair of the energy policy panel, IET; and Tony Cocker, chief executive, Eon UK. Over the coming months, Utility Week/WWT/ WET News/Network will speak to the top ten people, speak to people in the industry about the influence and impact they have had, publish biographies detailing their careers and key decisions, or hearing from them direct with columns. Key technologies The ten technologies outlined opposite/below are fundamentally changing the shape and look of the utilities sector - in particular the energy side things. These include technologies and innovations that are already a key part of utilities’ daily operations, and those whose influence and impact is only going to grow in the coming years.

The Utility Week Live 2017 transformation technologies: • Cloud computing - Cloud computing is a general term for the delivery of hosted services over the internet. It enables companies to use computer resources, such as data storage or an application, as a utility, rather than having to build and maintain computing infrastructures and servers in house. This could enable multiple devices, including tablets and mobiles, access to programmes and data remotely vie the internet. • Demand response/demand side management - Demand response and demand side management provides an opportunity for consumers to play a significant role in the operation of the electric grid by reducing or shifting their electricity usage during peak periods in response to time-based rates or other forms of financial incentives. The aim is to cut peak loads and remove the need to reinforce energy networks by better tying demand up with supply. • Electric vehicles - The last three years have seen a remarkable surge in demand for electric vehicles in the UK – new registrations of plug-in cars increased from 3,500 in 2013 to around 85,000 by January 2017. The increase in the number of EVs will potentially put additional strain on energy networks by increasing demand at peak times. However, there is also the opportunity to utilise EVs as mobile storage devices. • Energy storage (including batteries) Energy storage (ES) technologies offer great potential for supporting renewable energy and the UK’s energy system. The offer different ways to store the energy created by variable renewable technologies at times when demand is low, but supply is high. They will then be able to provide a variety of services when needed. There are a variety of energy storage solutions available and being developed, including battery technologies, pumped storage, and mechanical storage.

The top ten technologies are: cloud computing; demand response and demand side management; electric vehicles; energy storage, including battery technology; geographical information systems (GIS); the Internet of Things (IoT); machine learning; smart metering; solar; and wind.

• Geographical information systems (GIS) A geographic information system (GIS) is a computer system for capturing, storing, checking, and displaying data related to positions on Earth’s surface. GIS can show many different kinds of data on one map. This enables people to more easily see, analyse, and understand patterns and relationships. For utilities, this will enable them to assess information about the land, such as the location of factories, farms, and schools, or storm drains, roads, and electric power lines.

Over the coming months, Utility Week/WWT/ WET News/Network will speak to experts in the technologies, look at examples of how they have been rolled out and assess the impact they’ve had, look at the numbers behind the innovations, and getting investor views on the development of the technologies and how close they are to transforming the business as usual operation in the sector.

• Internet of Things (IoT) - Simply put, this is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). For utilities, this could enable a variety of devices at different sites and locations to connect to one another and to communicate and take orders from staff or collectively follow programmes. This could include the

50|

safe shutdown of assets at a substation in response to a failure, and another asset responding to ensure continuity of supply. At a domestic level, this could enable smart appliance to respond to external signals to turn on or power down. • Machine learning - Machine learning is the field of computer science that gives computers the ability to learn without being explicitly programmed. In the last decade this has provided innovations such as self driving cars and practical speech recognition. Moving forward, this could lead to improved and automated network management. • Smart metering - On a basic level, smart meters are electronic devices that record consumption of energy and communicate that information at back to the utility for monitoring and billing. The UKs smart meter programme is due to rollout 53 million smart gas and electricity meters by 2020. The technology is also thought to be an enabler technology, allowing for things such as 24 hour switching, smart appliances within a connected home, and opening up smarter local network management solutions. • Solar - Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity. Within the UK, 10 per cent of its renewable power comes from solar power, or 1.5% of total UK electricity. This comes from a total of 8GW of solar PV which has been deployed so far. Solar is owned by 670,000 homeowners, and thousands of businesses, farmers, schools and community groups. Despite cuts to subsides for the technology, it is expected to continue growing as the government strives to meet its carbon targets. • Wind - The UK is one of the best locations for wind power in the world, and is considered to be the best in Europe. It contributed 11 per cent of UK electricity generation in 2015, and 17 per cent in December 2015. The deployment of wind power is set to increase, despite government opposition to new onshore developments. Offshore wind is expected to be the biggest growth area, with bigger turbines and larger windfarms being developed. Utility Week Live returns to the NEC in Birmingham on 23 and 24 May and will showcase the latest innovations and technical solutions for the industry. The theme for this year’s event is transformation and flexibility, and it is the show for essential services to showcase hundreds of new products from specialist suppliers and innovators, technical presentations, pitches and live demos. Plus, there is an extensive programme of seminars exploring the future of gas, electricity and water. For more information, please visit: www.utilityweeklive.co.uk

Sharing Core Capabilities

to Achieve Greater Design Efficiencies We know that the earlier you learn about a design change, the easier it is to implement it. It is our experience that making the most of rapid prototyping technology early in the design process brings significant savings in time and cost of reworking a design further down the line. The beauty of rapid prototyping is the ability to visualise your design and test the user experience of the final product. We have experienced that for many companies the prototype stage commonly results after the design process. Imagine if you were able to validate your design much earlier in its development. Test Before You Invest If you are designing a part for injection moulding, there are a number of basic rules to consider: wall thickness and uniformity come quite high up the list because this is where cost savings are highest. Troublesome warpage can be minimised with gussets and coring, isolating a boss from a corner can mitigate sink marks. Crucial to designing for strength are the orientation of ribs and there is the need to incorporate a draft angle for better de-moulding and so the list goes on. Imagine then, if you could freely tap into the expertise of a manufacturing partner who would consider all the nuances of injection moulding during your plastic part design starting with the production of your very first prototype. Validate Your Design At Rutland Plastics we have structured a 3D Printing Bureau service where we fully utilise our expertise in designing for injection moulding. Each and every 3D printing enquiry comes directly into the engineering design department, here it undergoes an appraisal by one of the design team for prototyping. Additionally, we proactively address product issues, flagging up concerns that may affect the overall manufacturability later in the production process. We are happy to offer design suggestions; most certainly this does not distract from the specialism of the designer

60|

but we believe sharing our expertise helps integrate all the core skills available from both parties to achieve greater design effiencies. Variety and Versatility Our Stratasys Connex 350 gives us ability to combine multiple materials in varying proportions, which means that unlike other rapid prototyping methods, assemblies comprising different materials can be produced in a single build eliminating the need to glue together parts made with different materials. Up to 14 different materials may be fabricated within a single printed part, and artistic details to functional markings such as text and logos can be incorporated. We offer more than a 100 material options that can simulate Polypropylene, ABS, transparent, high temperature and a wide range of rubber-like materials from Shore 25A to 95A. Whether you have a full CAD model or just a sketch we can help you to optimise your design in terms of physical shape, ease of production, cost and performance early in the process to make it easier to manufacture with excellent overall quality when the time comes.

Busbar Systems and IEC 61439 Standards Busbars systems, or busbar supports are essentially heavy conductors, typically made of copper, which carry and distribute powerful electric currents to components that consume electrical power throughout an assembly.

This capability, and the product specification, is the subject of testing which is covered by the IEC 61439 standard and which provides vital information for building a safe assembly.

Busbars are not only easy to install (certainly compared to cabling), they also play a major role in the design and safe operation of a switchgear and controlgear assembly.

Busbar testing, in fact, was revolutionised following the introduction of the standard which came into force in November 2014. It continued a determination across the sector to harmonise the low voltage industry through the creation of one standard which provided protection for both personnel and switchgear.

The recent introduction of the IEC 61439 switchgear and control standards has significant implications for the design and performance of the copper busbar system. It’s an area which engineers need to appreciate, not least because the new testing regime and the requirement for compliance has changed the way we think about the selection of the busbar system. One of the most important requirements of any switchgear power distribution system is to carry fault currents (short circuits) safely until a protection device, namely the fuse or the moulded case circuit breaker, interrupts the fault.

64|

IEC 61439 requires busbar systems to be tested – by their manufacturers - within enclosures rather than (as previously happened) as a standalone arrangement. This is a step forward for the industry, providing access for system engineers to data delivered in situ which offered both a more realistic assessment and more accurate and reliable data than before. Research today: Flexible manufacturing on the road to production runs of one Fraunhofer enables intelligent manufacturing with help from a digital twin Manufacturing currently follows a series of fixed, separate stages. If machines or equipment suddenly fail, production stops. That costs time and money. Fraunhofer researchers now offer a better way with a digital twin.

M

achines today produce parts in networked, preprogrammed production runs: pieces are turned, milled and measured in a set order. But what happens when a machine fails or a customer changes its order? Production has to be re-configured, which is time-consuming and expensive. What if there was a better way? Instead of a central control program issuing commands, the workflow would develop flexibly, each part deciding for itself the best route through production. Sound like a pipe dream? To the contrary: Developers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology (IPT) in Aachen are working on such a system. It is called “Service-Oriented Architecture for Adaptive and Networked Production” and functions similar to an automobile navigation system that uses current data to determine the best route in real time. Each part carries information regarding the next production stage; which machine will be called into operation is purposely left undecided. Only when a production stage is pending does the system select a machine from those that are readily available. Each part bears a QR-Code identifying it as a unique entity. The software remembers what was done to each part at each production stage, for example, “Hole is drilled with machine parameter A and tool X”. A digital twin emerges from this history, displaying at any time where its physical counterpart is in the production process. Digital twins are especially valuable to manufacturers of a wide variety of goods because updating or changing a production run does not require a system overhaul.

70|

Single parts thanks to flexible production, plug-and-produce for independence The “Smart Manufacturing Network” manages the digital twin, always analyzing and reusing its process data to improve process robustness and product quality. “Networking machines with parts will enable companies to produce one-off products in the future – production runs of one,” says Michael Kulik, project leader at Fraunhofer working on the software development. A unique aspect of the system is the menu which configures a production sequence. Using drag-and-drop, the user selects individual steps from a list of all services and arranges them in the desired order like building blocks. If a machine fails, a part is simply rerouted to another available machine. “Many machines in a production line can perform a variety of tasks,” explains Kulik. “For example, a sophisticated 5-axis milling machine can also do the job of a simpler 3-axis milling machine. In the future, the Smart Manufacturing Network’s service-oriented software can flexibly decide to do the job on an idle 5-axis machine.” Also important for flexible production: Machines from various manufacturers must easily integrate into the Smart Manufacturing Network. IPT is working on this with partners from science and

industry in Fraunhofer’s “Networked, Adaptive Production” performance center. “The plug-and-play that we know from everyday technology does not yet exist in industry,” says Dr. Thomas Bobek, coordinator of the Fraunhofer performance center. “Our goal is to make plug-and-produce possible.” Fraunhofer’s researchers will demonstrate how the digital twin, service-oriented software and Smart Manufacturing Network collaborate at HANNOVER MESSE 2017 as part of the trade fair “Research & Technology” in Hall 2 at Stand C22. Making the most of digestate

By Matt Hale, International Sales Manager, HRS Heat Exchangers The UK’s anaerobic digestion sector has grown exponentially in recent years. From a starting point of fewer than 50 plants in 2009 (outside of the water sector), the industry now boasts over 300 AD facilities, processing in excess of 12m tonnes of feedstock including food waste, farm waste, industrial residues and crops*. Historically, AD operators have focused on generating electricity and heat. But with over 90 per cent of an AD plant’s feedstock coming back out again in the form of digestate (the nutrient-rich biofertiliser left over at the end of the AD process), failure to implement a robust digestate management plan at the start of a project can prove a costly mistake. In addition, recent cuts to incentive schemes – the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) is now severely constrained and the Renewables Obligation (RO) is closing to new applications in March 2017 – mean that AD operators must ensure that every aspect of the AD process is optimised if their business is to succeed. Ignoring the issue of digestate is not an option and rather than viewing it as a burden that needs to be disposed of, today’s astute operators are rightly treating it as a valuable resource that also represents a potential additional revenue stream. Pros and cons Rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, digestate also contains magnesium and sulphur, making it an ideal alternative to chemical fertilisers. WRAP’s DC-Agri project found that smart use of digestate by farmers and growers can increase yields and reduce bills, providing crops with a measured boost of nutrients and helping to maintain soil fertility. However, its high liquid content can make digestate difficult and expensive to transport, spread and store. Storage in particular is a crucial consideration. As well as Nitrate Vulnerable Zone requirements, which prohibit spreading at certain

72|

times of the year, digestate is best applied when the crop has the greatest demand for nitrogen; for cereal crops, this is usually early in the growing season. Reducing the liquid fraction to make it easier to store, but without losing any of the valuable nutrients, is therefore imperative if digestate’s value is to be monetised. Technical innovations The Digestate Concentration System (DCS) from HRS Heat Exchangers significantly reduces digestate volumes while, at the same time, maximising the nutrient content. Using concentration under vacuum, the DCS removes up to 80 per cent of the liquid volume of digestate to produce a material containing up to 20 per cent dry solids. This makes it easier and cheaper to handle, store, transport and apply to land – in fact, storage and transport requirements can be halved. Not only that, AD operators can claim the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) for using their heat within the DCS. The first part of the DCS process involves heating the liquid digestate in heat exchangers; the surplus water from the plant’s CHP engine (which is usually available at 85˚C) is used as the heating media, meaning that unlike conventional digestate dryers, which require a lot of heat, the DCS is extremely efficient. The digestate is then pumped into a cyclone separator; the high speed rotating airflow causes the steam to flash off under vacuum and the solid particles to fall to the bottom of the cyclone, where they can be removed. The steam produced from this first cycle (usually available at 70˚C) is then used as the heating media for the second effect, whereby the process is repeated. The subsequent steam (usually available at 60˚C) is used as the heating media for the third cycle – the number of effects is determined by the level of dry solids required, and the amount of surplus heat available, up to a

Digestate solutions in action Farming business D. Williams & Co grows arable crops and fresh herbs on more than 2,000 acres of land at Cattlegate Farm in Enfield. In 2008, it set up Willen Biogas to develop and operate a 1.5 MW food waste AD plant, producing 41,000 tonnes of digestate each year which it uses on its farmland. With such a large volume of digestate to contend with, the company needed a solution that would enable it to cut its digestate storage, transport and application costs while retaining the valuable nutrients. Willen Biogas invested in a Digestate Concentration System (DCS) from HRS Heat Exchangers, which significantly reduces digestate volumes while, at the same time, maximising the nutrient content. Using concentration under vacuum, the DCS has reduced the volume of Willen’s digestate by up to 60 per cent, taking it down from 50,000m3 per year to 20,000m3 per year. This has significantly reduced the amount of traffic going across the farmland (from 2,174 tanker movements per year to just 870), and enables the digestate to be easily stored until most needed by the crop, allowing the farm to have more efficient spreading windows and comply with Nitrate Vulnerable Zone requirements. The DCS also provides a valuable nutrient boost to the concentrated digestate, increasing the total compounds which are available for plant growth by up to 150 per cent. Nitrogen levels have increased from 5kg/m3 to 12.5kg/m3; phosphorus levels have increased from 2kg/ m3 to 5 kg/m3; and potassium levels have increased from 2.5kg/m3 to 6.25kg/m3.

maximum of four cycles. After the final effect, the steam is condensed back into water, which can then displace mains water used in the front end of the digester; a completely closed loop system. Additional benefits Besides being virtually energy and water self-sufficient, the DCS also reduces odours and maximises nutrient content by turning ammonia into ammonium sulphate. Furthermore, as a plug-and-play, fully automated system, it’s completely flexible and can be tailored to suit each individual AD operation. No longer an afterthought, investing in a system which reduces digestate volumes while increasing its nutrient content is enabling today’s successful AD operators to beat the incentive trap and make the most of this valuable resource. *ADBA’s Anaerobic Digestion

Interplas, the leading trade show for the UK plastics industry, is to expand outside of a single hall for the first time since 2005 following a huge surge in demand for space.

With the current floorplan being over 85 percent sold nine months out from the event opening, with both potential and existing exhibitors clamouring for space, the decision was made in December 2016 to increase the size of the 2017 floorplan. September’s edition will now encompass all of Hall 4, as well as half of neighbouring Hall 3A, representing an increase of 23 percent compared to the previous edition in 2014. The triennial trade fair, which will return to the NEC in Birmingham, UK, from 26-28 September 2017, will remain co-located with TCT Show, the leading event for 3D printing and additive manufacturing technologies, which will be in the remainder of 3A and the whole of Hall 3. Interplas 2017 has already secured stand bookings from some of the industry’s biggest names, with many taking an increased floor space to replicate the high levels of success seen in the 2014 outing. This success is proven by the last edition’s post-show analysis, which revealed that 89 per cent of exhibiting companies achieved their objectives, 88 per cent rated the visitor quality and quantity as “good or excellent” and 56 percent said they had

won new business during Interplas 2014 or expected to because of their participation at the show. Commenting, Duncan Wood, COO of Organiser, Rapid News Communications Group, said: “The key to the continued resurgence of Interplas under the management of Rapid News is the level of business created and executed at the event. “The post-show feedback from 2014, along with the number of exhibitors clamoring for space at the 2017 edition, is the clearest indication yet that Interplas is the definitive event for the UK plastics industry and one in which exhibitors can be confident delivers worthwhile return on investment.” With visitor numbers reaching 10,293 at Interplas 2014, organisers are expecting another increase in footfall for 2017’s three-day event. Preparations are well underway for a number of new and exciting seminars, features, workshops and training sessions that will provide added value to attending the show. The show will also include a toplevel conference with some of the industry’s most interesting and authoritative speakers presenting in a purpose-built auditorium new for the 2017 edition.

Safeguarding your powder quality, controlling dust, protecting operators, speeding up process times, all are possible with Farleygreene’s dispensing and sieving stations. When processing powders into a production line, consideration of the quality of the input material is of utmost importance and diligent handling is a prime factor. The protection of the operator from airborne dust and minimising the bulk load lifting are health and safety necessities that are often overlooked. Farleygreene offer solutions to this issue within one simple station. Utilising the Slimline vibratory check sieve units they have 2 options available, selection of which can depend upon throughput, powder type and what the next process the powder is being transferred to, they can advise the correct type as required. The Sievmaster 553-STS machine is essentially an open top sieve unit but with the added benefit of a sack rest table and a cover which can be connected to a new or existing dust extraction system. This unit gives a basic level of protection and assistance to the operator. The dust

78|

cover can also be isolated via the swivel shut front access door when not in use. It is usually installed where a batch type process is used. The Easilift range is supplied in 2 variants using either a 600mm or 1000mm vibratory sieve unit. Each type has a power lift dusthood so the operator can gain access to the sieve components without any heavy lifting. All seal are self-docking and require awkward connections. The dusthood provides for a sack rest table and for connection to a dust extraction system. The ‘EASILIFT’ and ‘553-STS’ can be used in conjunction with any type of conveyor, either mechanical or pneumatic and the frames are adaptable to fit into almost any situation. Test units are available for use either at your site or in our test facility. Farleygreene can also offer options for low care to high care interfaces which are becoming a necessity, certainly

within the food industry, as well as dust extraction systems to provide the full protection package. With over 40 years’ experience Farleygreene offer a wide range of sieving machinery, their equipment and technologies cover almost every type of sieving and screening process. With their focus on customer’s specific requirements and their dedication to R&D they can offer the benefit of a tailored bespoke design service. FLIR LAUNCHES LATEST GENERATION, ADVANCED THERMAL IMAGING CAMERAS TO MINIMISE PRODUCTION LOSSES FLIR Systems announces three new Exx-Series advanced thermal imaging cameras for electrical, mechanical, and building applications: the FLIR E75, E85, and E95. The redesigned, Wi-Fi-enabled Exx-Series features intelligent interchangeable lenses, laser-assisted autofocus modes and area measurement functionality, improvements to FLIR’s patented MSX® imaging technology, and a larger, more vibrant 4-inch touchscreen. These distinctive features, combined with increased sensitivity and increased native resolution, will help professionals identify hot spots or building deficiencies before potential problems become expensive repairs. In redesigning the Exx-Series, FLIR developed a new range of compact intelligent, interchangeable lenses that the camera automatically recognizes and calibrates, eliminating the need for manual calibration. The Exx-Series now also features laser distance measurement that assures precise autofocus to improve temperature measurement accuracy, and specifically for the FLIR E85 and E95 models, provides the data for on-screen area measurement in square feet or metres. In addition, the FLIR E85 and E95 models offer increased thermal detector resolutions with up to 464×348 (161,472 pixels), and measure temperatures up to 1,500 degrees Celsius.

faster, more intuitive operation, and coupled with enhanced Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Meterlink® connectivity, archiving and report generation has never been easier.

In conjunction with FLIR Tools™, the FLIR E75, E85, and E95 are the first Exx cameras to offer UltraMax®, FLIR’s embedded, super-resolution process that improves effective resolution by four times – up to 645,888 pixels – and thermal sensitivity by up to 50 percent. All models also feature significant improvement to FLIR’s MSX technology, which now utilizes a 5-megapixel visual camera for improved image clarity and readability. These improvements, combined with a display that is 33 percent brighter and 30 percent larger than previous Exx models, yield more vibrant and detailed thermal imagery.

“Redesigned from the handle up, the new series of FLIR Exx cameras is a significant achievement in terms of advanced functionality, performance, and ease of use in thermal cameras for electro-mechanical, plant, and building inspections,” says Andy Teich, President and CEO at FLIR. “With an ever-broadening base of users who demand thermal cameras that are compact, capable and easy to use, the advanced Exx cameras check every box.”

The Exx-Series cameras also feature a rugged, waterresistant design, and scratch-resistant Dragontrail™ cover glass over an optically-bonded, projected capacitive (PCAP) touchscreen. A simplified user interface delivers
