TRESCAL LEADS WAY WITH FIRST FOR UK ‘CALIBRATION OF ABSORBING CLAMPS’ UKAS ACCREDITATION
T
rescal’s Yateley laboratory has been granted UKAS accreditation for the calibration of absorbing clamps, the only laboratory in the UK with the ability to provide accreditation to this standard. The international specialist in calibration has been granted UKAS accreditation for the calibration of absorbing clamps for clamp factor CF, decoupling factor DF and decoupling factor DR, in accordance with the BS EN standard 55016 – 1-3:2006. Absorbing clamps are used by EMC testing laboratories, for the measurement of radiated emissions from cables and leads. Testing and measurement is required as part of standards, including EN 55013, EN 55014 and EN 50083-2. To comply with UKAS accreditation requirements EMC test laboratories must have the test equipment they use calibrated by a suitably accredited laboratory. Trescal’s laboratory in Yateley, Hampshire is the only

laboratory in the UK that meets these needs for absorbing clamps. Manufacturers are required to have their electrical products tested for any unwanted electromagnetic emissions, and to ensure that equipment is not susceptible to a normal level of interference. Requirements form part of the EMC Directive and failure to comply imprisonment. The automated measurement system that Trescal employ utilises a Vector Network Analyser associated with a software controlled DC stepper to move the clamp along the 6 meter test rig. This enables calibration of the Absorbing Clamp at the required 167 frequency points and within the by the BS EN standards. Measurements are also made of the output of the customer’s cable, connecting to their measurement equipment.
Commenting on the additional UKAS accreditation, Stephen Crook, Yateley Branch Manager at Trescal said: “We are delighted that our Yateley laboratory has achieved this accreditation for absorbing clamps. Until now, users of absorbing clamps were required to send equipment abroad to be calibrated in line with the standards, but with this accreditation, we can now meet these needs here in the UK.” “The achievement demonstrates our commitment to constantly improve the breadth and the quality of the For further information, please visit

The World of 3D Print is Expanding With the digital age advancing rapidly, 3D scanning and printing is revolutionising manufacturing and supply chains in almost every industry sector. After a large increase in demand for 3D printing, Midlands based 3D scanning and printing Company Central Scanning ltd have invested in two 3D printing machines to complement their existing capacity: The Mojo FDM Printer is part of the FDM Idea series; it builds models up to 5 x 5 x 5 colours and P430 materials, including nectarine, olive green and ivory. How it works: Two materials are heated in an extrusion head and deposited in thin layers on a modelling base. The model is then built precisely, layer upon layer. When the model is complete, the support material is removed, leaving an accurate, durable, functional 3D model. The Mojo FDM is as simple to use as a document printer, yet powered by FDM Technology to build spot-on, functional concept models and rapid prototypes in ABS plus thermoplastic. With the lowest Idea Series 3D printer, Mojo’s good vibes inspire boundless creativity. The Fortus 4ooMC Printer is a new release from the Fortus 3D production systems; it is capable of building models up to 14 x 10 x 10 inches and is accurate to within 0.0015 of an inch.
How it works: Durable, production-grade thermoplastic is heated in an extrusion head and deposited in thin layers on a modelling base. Once the part has completed printing, the soluble or breakaway support material is removed, leaving an accurate and durable part that’s environmentally stable. It is production without the expense and time requirements of tooling. This is perfect for:
The Fortus 400MC, coupled with Insight processing software, allows the quick manufacture of parts that match the mechanical, thermal, aesthetic and resolution needs required. Having this printer enables the ability to accurately manufacture parts with complex geometries that are strong enough not only for functional testing, but end use as well. By using a wide range of thermoplastics with advanced mechanical properties, the
parts printed by this machine can endure high heat, caustic chemicals, sterilization and high impact applications. The two new printers are to be installed alongside the current FDM Prodigy plus and Objet Eden 500V printers at Central Scanning’s main headquarters in Bromsgrove. Managing Director Nick Godfrey says ‘’3D printing enables having the level of 3D scanning and printing capabilities we now have in house, we’re a one stop shop for most businesses’’. He continued ‘’At Central Scanning, no two days are the same and we have some really exciting projects in process at the moment and more on the horizon. We look forward to pushing the boundaries of these new machines with both our current and some new clients’’ If you’d like to discuss a requirement or have any questions about 3D scanning or printing, then get in touch with Central Scanning today on 01527 558 282 or visit the website www.central-scanning.co.uk.

ROTECH SLEEVE CODING SYSTEM SUPPORTS RAPID EXPANSION AT POTS & CO
Pots & Co produces a retail range of high end desserts from recipes developed by Michelin-trained chefs. The desserts, which are handmade and packed in individual ceramic ramekins with plastic lids and an outer cardboard sleeve, include lemon & lime posset, chocolate & orange pot and sticky
Pots & Co operations director Fraser Thomson that Rotech could handle its intricately shaped sleeves. “What we liked about Rotech is that they didn’t just give us list of machines and a list of prices. We felt they had more expertise than the other coding companies we saw and that made us coder to suit our sleeves rather than simply selling us a standard machine. They were also very much of the attitude that they would sort out any problems or challenges we might have,” he said. As the dessert production process is completely manual, Pots & Co wanted fast coder.
“The RF2 prints date and batch codes with ease in the correct position each and every time. We are delighted with the system and no longer have the worry of poorly printed eligible codes which can be resultant of hand stamping.”
“We produce between 10,000 and

with Tesco or Waitrose. We needed a coder that could keep pace with those volumes,” said Fraser.
“Without the Rotech coder we would have needed three people dedicated to hand stamping sleeves - and - apart
Rotech recommended its RF2 - a standalone friction feed overprinting system that would enable Pots & Co to the production line already printed.
The boutique company has grown exponentially since it was founded by Julian Dyer in 2010. In 2012 Pots & Co was making about 1,500 desserts a week, supplied to Selfridges and a handful of Waitrose stores. By the end of 2013, they were producing more than 10,000 pots per week by hand. desserts per week, destined for 500 Tesco stores, 300 Waitrose stores and other top tier retailers such as Booths and Selfridges. As the company has grown its coding requirements have changed. In the early days, hand stamping 2,000 sleeves a day with use by dates was perfectly manageable. However, when short space of time, Pots & Co knew it needed a faster method. A‘Google’ search of coding equipment suppliers threw up several companies, among them Hertfordshire-based packaging coding and marking specialist Rotech. Rotech visited Pots & Co’s London factory and carried out trials on its

industry, the RF2 uses Rotech’s stackto-stack feeding technology to pick sleeves from a stack, accurately print date or batch codes, and place the printed sleeve neatly onto another stack for collection, all at speeds of 400 per minute. In this way, Pots & Co could precode the sleeves for an entire day’s production in less than an hour. TIJ (thermal inkjet) rather than CIJ (continuous inkjet) printing, for reasons explained by the company’s director Richard Pether: running all the time, but not so great if you want to run it intermittently throughout the day, which is the typical usage pattern at Pots & Co. TIJ is a much cleaner, easier-to-use technology, as frequently as you need to without having to run a cleaning programme every time.” The system, which has been in use at Pots & Co since last May, is running and Fraser is impressed with its performance.
expertise and willingness to resolve any issues has also been shown to be When Pots & Co launched a new duo pot format towards the end of last year, it had problems running the new sleeve on the Rotech machine. “The new sleeves were very glossy and kept gripping each other and jamming the machine,” explained Fraser. “Cash was tight in the early days and we weren’t in a position to throw £80,000 at a packaging line. The Rotech
might sound like an overstatement but the sleeve coding system has quite simply made it possible for us to grow the business,” said Fraser.

SHOW PREVIEW…UK AD & Biogas 2015, stand E213 Demonstrating how to optimise anaerobic digestion (AD) plant performance, a key theme at this years’ UK AD & Biogas show, HRS Heat Exchangers will showcase their pasteurisation technology on stand E213: the HRS 3 Tank Batch Sludge Pasteuriser System. The system boasts to be 70% more energy plant’s organic biofertiliser, digestate, to meet PAS 110 standards. Pasteurisation is known to be an energy hungry process. To combat this the HRS system uses waste heat from the plant’s CHP engine via the engine’s cooling water and also recycles the heat (through heat exchanger tubes) used during the pasteurisation process to reduce energy consumption by up to 70%. Helping operators to optimise the running of their plant, the system has been designed to run a continuous pasteurisation process even when
HRS supporting software package will track, trace and electronically report every batch of digestate back to the source/time/date/feedstock.
And for operators with crop based plants, it’s imperative that the right technology is implemented to help meet the forthcoming Sustainability Criteria.”
The system’s heat exchanger inner tube (which carries the digestate) is designed with a unique corrugated

Ultimately this innovation helps plant operators achieve a robust production process and exceptional plus reduces equipment TCO (total cost of ownership). Matt Hale, International Sales Manager at HRS Heat Exchangers comments: “Faced with increasing competition, falling gate fees, and degression, AD operators must optimise all aspects of their plant to achieve and demonstrate

estminster Hall is home to the largest medieval timber roof in Northern Europe, measuring 21m by 73m (68ft by 240ft) and some 30m tall, the roof was commissioned in 1393 by Richard II, and is still standing. While much is known about the events that took place in the Hall’s 900-year history, in reality little is known about the internal atmosphere and conditions of the roof today. Caption Data were commissioned to install a remote environmental monitoring system which measures a range of parameters from various points throughout the timber roof’s structure. The RDL//1000 environmental monitoring system with 27 sensors, was installed and is now measuring timber moisture levels, temperature and humidity, taking up to 216 measurements every hour. In addition, Caption Data installed a full weather station on the roof which measures wind speed, rain, sunshine, temperature and humidity. Allowing a full comparison between the internal environment and the weather outside. From an online data management portal called the CDLSmartHub the Parliamentary Estate’s Directorate and the team involved in the conservation project are able to view trends in data, manage sensor settings and set alarm thresholds (among other things). The CDLSmartHub provides real time alerts when alarm thresholds are met and instant access to data as soon as it’s available, allowing the team to establish the best conservation treatments for the internal stonework and roof timbers. When alarm thresholds are met SMS and Email alerts make key personnel aware of potentially unsafe or dangerous temperature, humidity or moisture content levels. Robin Walker, MP for Worcester said, “Hopefully 21st century internet based monitoring from Worcester based Caption Data will help preserve this fabulous building for many more centuries to come!”

GigE Vision and USB3 cameras utilising the latest high performance 2.3 Mpixel Sony IMX174 CMOS sensor are now available from STEMMER IMAGING.
Available in monochrome or colour versions, the sensor provides a resolution of 1936 x 1216 pixels. The Pregius global shutter pixel technology utilises a special pixel structure that allows use of the noise reduction methods normally used in Sony’s low-noise CCD sensors without any compromise of the inherent high dynamic range of this CMOS sensor. This system not only prevents motion blur, but virtually eliminates noise in the image bringing a sensitivity previously unattainable in CMOS sensors. The sensor’s extremely high dynamic range of over 70 dB allows the capture of scenes with high contrast ranges. The resulting additional information available in the images is important in many applications, systems where the image detail can help prevent accidents. In addition, space saving since less illumination equipment is required. The sensor’s high sensitivity allows the camera aperture to be stopped down giving increased depth of focus, bringing higher process stability and reliability thanks to improved detail in the image. Mark Williamson, Director - Corporate Market Development at STEMMER IMAGING, commented: “These sensors provide a major step forward in CMOS imaging quality and can be an attractive alternative to CCD imaging for some applications. With a choice of GigE Vision or USB3

interfaces we can supply the best solution to meet individual needs for industrial inspection, outdoor applications with dynamic lighting situations, low light level applications, security and surveillance and HD broadcast analysis such as for sports analytics. In addition, more Sony Pregius global shutter sensors with 3.1, 5, 8.8 and 12 Mpixel resolution have recently been announced, providing even greater opportunities for camera manufacturers in the near future.” The G-235 is part of Allied Vision’s outstanding price/performance ratio. It incorporates three LUTs, sophisticated colour correction algorithms, a robust metal housing, and many modular options such as angled heads or board level versions and is optionally available with Power over Ethernet. Delivering up to 55 frames per second the GigE Vision interface facilitates cable lengths of up to 100 meters. The USB 3 uEye CP camera from IDS has a compact (29 x 29 x 21.5 mm) yet exceptionally robust magnesium housing for applications where space is at a premium. Real-time image signals and a serial communication interface open up a huge range of applications. By utilising the new high speed USB 3 interface it can deliver frame rates up to 161 fps with standard cable lengths up to 5 meters. Real-time in-camera image processing eases the burden on the host computer.
