Protests planned over Beach body ready tube advert

on Tuesday calling for the posters to be removed from London Underground stations, while the Advertising Standards Authority said it had received more than 200 complaints that the advert promotes an unhealthy body image .

idea that your body should be covered up and hidden away if it doesn t meet these bizarrely specific requirements…I m over it, you guys. And judging by the response we ve gotten on Twitter, it looks like you are too.

The backlash against a controversial advertising campaign for Protein World weight-loss products ‒ which critics say promotes negative body issues ‒ continues to grow, with a mass demonstration now planned for Hyde Park this weekend.

As discontent with the campaign continues to grow, activists are planning a Taking back the beach demonstration in Speaker s Corner this Saturday, urging people of all sizes to attend in swimwear or whatever feels comfortable.

Despite the opposition, Richard Staveley, head of marketing at Protein World indicated that the company was not concerned and would not be removing the adverts.

The advert posters, which picture a bikini-wearing model next to the slogan Are you beach body ready? have been branded sexist and offensive . More than 50,000 people had signed the petition at change.org by lunchtime

GLL to launch extreme sports facility in east London

GLL is to open an extreme sports facility at Barking Sporthouse and Gym next week (5 May), featuring London s biggest indoor skate park and a unique climbing wall, as the operator bids to broaden its leisure appeal. The skate park will offer more than 900sq m (9,688sq ft) of skate ramp terrain, with a beginners area and street zone with ledges, flat bars and Euro-gaps , and London s first key-hole Birchwood bowl. On the same day, GLL will also launch a Vertical Playground climbing facility designed to be multi-generational, appealing to both children and adults alike. The Barking Sporthouse and Gym site, which is operated under GLL s Better brand, has been undergoing significant development and will also soon feature east London s first ever indoor trampoline park We understand the need to support young people in pursuing an active, healthy lifestyle by taking part in the activities they enjoy like skating and climbing ‒ and we know there is not enough indoor skate facilities in London for them to be able to do this, said GLL director of development Chris Symons. The new flagship facility sees GLL going beyond our core leisure offering, diversifying into a number of new alternative sports activities that will soon be available in other facilities that we operate across the UK.

This was never about suggesting that people shouldn t try to get fit if they want to, one of the organisers wrote on the event s Facebook page. If having rippling abs is your thing, more power to you. I bet you rock them. But I m so tired of it being an expectation. The

He was quoted by The Guardian as saying: There s more than two and a half million people who use London Underground every day and sales have considerably jumped, so regardless of that 40,000 I think I can comfortably say that we ve had ... it s been better for us, there s been far more positive reaction than negative.

Women make up two thirds of fitness workforce

More than two thirds of the UK fitness sector s workforce is female, according to the Working in Fitness Survey 2015. The research ‒ which saw SkillsActive and the Exercise, Movement and Dance Partnership (EMDP) survey 35,000 members of the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) ‒ found that 67 per cent of the workforce is female, with the industry s flexible hours highlighted as a prime factor in attracting more women. The fitness industry offers great benefits in terms of working flexible hours, which is probably why the sector attracts predominantly women, said Jade Moulden, insight lead at EMDP. With 67 per cent of the fitness workforce consisting of women, it is an ideal career for those with families who can t afford to have a regimented nine to five schedule and want the freedom of working for themselves. It offers excellent career opportunities. The survey also revealed that the average full-time salary in the sector is £22,700, with full-time working women earning 97 per cent of a fulltime male salary. Though far from ideal, the industry s gender pay gap is far narrower than the overall UK average ‒ which reflects a difference of 9.4 per cent between male and female full-time earnings across all sectors.

Given that industry salaries typically fall somewhat below the full-time national average of £27,271, it is perhaps unsurprising that 50 per cent of Working in Fitness Survey respondents said low income would be a key deciding factor for leaving the industry. By extension, financial cost was seen as the biggest barrier to undertaking further training, with 62 per cent citing expense as the biggest obstacle to additional qualifications. While unlikely to become millionaires, the survey suggests that fitness sector employees are dedicated professionals, motivated by a genuine love of their job. The results revealed that 70 per cent of fitness professionals work in the fitness industry because they have a genuine passion for fitness, while 44 per cent entered the sector because they wanted to be a help to other people. It s great to see that people are coming into the industry because they genuinely love what they do and want to help other people, showing that the fitness industry continues to be a rewarding and appealing sector to work in, said Greg Small, head of membership at REPs. The fact that 40 per cent of respondents have been working in the sector for more than ten years and have no plans to leave in the next five is testament that fitness professionals truly are a happy workforce.

LM Gym, Manila

Where Manny Pacquiao got his grit

Manny Pacquiao has become one of the most recognisable stars in the world of sport after a series of mega-fights and another one to follow on Saturday night against Floyd Mayweather at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The Filipino has been involved in some of the biggest bouts in the world over the past decade or so, facing the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and four fights against Mexican warrior Juan Manuel Marquez. But it s been a tough road to the top for Pacquiao from being born into poverty in the Philippines. He spent the early part of his career boxing in the Far East before being given his chance on the big stage in 2001 against Lehlo Ledwaba in an IBF world super-bantamweight title fight in Las Vegas. Ever since dethroning the South African world champion on that June night at the MGM Grand 14 years ago, Pacquiao hasn t looked back and is set to take on Mayweather in the Fight of the Century on Saturday.

Just days away from the $300million showdown on the Vegas Strip, pictures have emerged of Pacquiao as a teenager in a Manila boxing gym, when occasions such as this Saturday night were just a dream. Pacquiao moved away from home a the age of 14 to the country s capital Manila to pursue his boxing career and the rest, as they say, is history. The 36-year-old is now one of the biggest stars in the world. These incredible pictures show Pacquiao training at the LM Gym in Manila in 1996 at the age of 17 after he won his first 10 professional bouts - all of which were in 1995. In the same year that these pictures were taken, Mayweather was preparing to box at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, which ended for him in a controversial loss against Serafim Todorov in the semifinals.

Nineteen years later, Mayweather and Pacquiao will finally cross paths in the biggest fight of this generation. The pair will make their first public appearances of the week on Tuesday as the bout draws ever closer. Boxing fans have already begun pouring into Las Vegas to taste the atmosphere building around the richest fight in history, even though only 500 tickets for the clash were made available for general sale. Pacquiao will host a fans rally on Tuesday at the Mandalay Bay Hotel with trainer Freddie Roach, promoter Bob Arum and his pet Jack Russell Pacman also present. Attention then turns to the MGM Grand, the venue for the fight on Saturday and where Mayweather will be making his grand arrival. The welterweight rivals were both due to attend the traditional grand arrival that marks the beginning of fight week only for Arum to withdraw Pacquiao, claiming the event is a waste of time . Arum also pulled the plug on a media conference call with Pacquiao last week before a question had been asked, while Mayweather spoke for almost half an hour the following night. The one upmanship is sure to continue until fight day.

First gym dedicated to Children to open in Cardiff

The concept of gyms for children is becoming increasingly popular in other areas of the UK due to the increase in childhood.

The doors to Cardiff s first gym dedicated to children will open next month. The gym, situated within a 5,800 sq ft facility on T Glas Industrial Estate in Llanishen, is being started by former HR director Sarah Clark.

With more than 15 years in human resources and organisational development across the private and public sector, Mrs Clark was inspired to switch careers when she spotted a gap in the market. Sakura Health and Fitness will initially create fulltime jobs for four fully-qualified coaches, each with a focus on a specialist skill such as karate, gymnastics, strength or endurance. There will be additional opportunities for GCSE and A-Level PE students to develop their coaching and leadership skills through links with local schools and colleges. The venue will also offer local physiotherapists, nutritionists and other health professionals the opportunity to rent rooms in the building to offer their specialist services. Mrs Clark has had a life-long passion for fitness and her belief in professional & personal development led to her decision to switch careers and launch Sakura Health and Fitness. Mrs Clark has had support from Business in Focus who provide training, workshops and advise for business start-ups.

Sarah Clark at Sakura Gym

Sarah Clark, 41, said: Introducing strength, conditioning and endurance training at a young age is fun way to get children involved in physical fitness and put them on the path to a lifelong enjoyment of exercise. Taking part in sports and fitness classes provides so many additional cognitive and psychological benefits that the children can continue to benefit from throughout their life. The concept of gyms for children is becoming increasingly popular in other areas of the UK having migrated from the USA on the back of the childhood obesity epidemic. Membership prices start from £25 per month.

Pure Gym founder on how he built Britain s biggest gym chain Peter Roberts is the founder and chief executive of Britain s biggest gym chain but never works out in one.

Roberts got the idea for Pure Gym after spotting the low-cost gym trend overseas.

I live up in the hills of North Yorkshire and don t go because I haven t got one within 20 minutes, he protests. My gym is walking. I go for strenuous hikes.

They had been going in America for quite a long time and also in Germany and Scandinavia, he says, but for some reason, they just hadn t come over here.

Fortunately for Roberts, large numbers of Brits do like to exercise out of the elements and are increasingly doing so in the fastgrowing, low-cost end of the market.

The UK was dominated by the midmarket and top-end chains and there was a real opportunity at the bottom end.

Pure Gym, which Roberts started in 2009 with four sites in Leeds, Manchester, Wolverhampton and Edinburgh, now has 90 gyms from Aberdeen to Southampton. It is opening 40 new outlets this year, after launching 30 in 2014, and has set a target to have 250 to 300 UK gyms by 2020. The company says it is now Britain s largest gym chain by membership, with 450,000 members paying between £9.99 and £25 a month. It says that puts it ahead of Virgin Active and David Lloyd and it expects to overtake Virgin Active as the largest operator by number of sites by the end of March. Last week alone, Pure Gym opened six gyms, adding sites in North Finchley, Preston, Liverpool, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Epsom and Newtownabbey, Northern Ireland. Like all of its sites, each contains just a gym, with no swimming pools, saunas or racquet courts. The company s gyms typically each employ just two staff, supported by up to 12 self-employed trainers. Members join online, paying monthly with no annual contracts and using PIN codes to access the gyms around the clock.

Having been in hotels and pubs where cash and big staff numbers were an interesting challenge, going into a business with relatively low staff numbers and no great need for cash sounded pretty attractive. Roberts, now 69, obtained investment from private backers, before raising funds from Magenta This is a cash-generative business, says Roberts. Your cash flow is pretty strong so you don t need massive amounts of capital until you really gear up. Despite Pure Gym s success, he does not believe the industry s tried and tested annual contract model is broken. Everyone else is still doing it, he says. Most gyms do still have a 12-month contract option. We believe in our model. It s easier for people to leave but it s also easier for them to join. About 35pc of the people who leave us come back within a year. It s a pretty high proportion. Instead, Roberts sees the UK market polarising between its top and bottom ends, with operators in the middle such as LA Fitness and Fitness First increasingly squeezed. The middle is virtually gone, except for in London, he says.

The gym industry s annual churn, with a glut of people signing up to clubs every January amid fierce discounting, is increasingly attracting criticism. Only 13pc of Britons attend a gym, so competition is largely a matter of attracting each other s customers rather than nurturing new ones. The overall UK gyms market has only grown by 2pc in the past four years. Roberts agrees that this is a concern, with Britain lagging behind the gym membership rates of Scandinavia and Germany, where more than 20pc of the population goes to a gym. However, he sees an opportunity to increase the UK s gym membership rate to between 18pc and 20pc and says Pure Gym is working with Public Health England to encourage people to exercise and is also taking action to make gyms less intimidating. What s interesting is that 30pc of our members have never been a member of a gym before, he says. That s led by our prices and lack of a contract because we re making it affordable. But there s a section of people who feel uneasy about going into a big gym. Pure Gym has an app that helps people to keep to exercise regimes in the home and the group is developing a system with an American company that Roberts says will help further personalise peoples health and fitness regimes. If you don t want to come into a gym, eventually we will be able to stream something into your home, he says. What perhaps gyms haven t done very well is to personalise people s requirements. It s about finding out what someone s goal is. As for Roberts, he will keep tearing up those North Yorkshire moors.

PROTEIN FOR

BEAUTY Getting enough protein is crucial to maintaining a healthy body inside and out. We all know about how protein can help aid weight management/ loss, add muscle definition and help our bodies recover after a tough session at the gym. But did you know that its also vital to maintaining healthy nails, shiny hair and glowing skin? Rhiannon Lambert (first class BSc in Nutrition & Health and registered with the Association for Nutrition) is an Ambassador for Wheyhey protein ice cream. An avid foodie, Rhiannon has worked with Masterchef s Gregg Wallace and has created recipes for amongst others, The Detox Kitchen and The Recovery Cafe. Rhiannon s experience at fitness boutique Transition Zone has seen her work with Olympic athletes and witness the dramatic impact healthy eating can have on performance at the highest level. Here she tells us why what we eat is just as ‒ if not more - important for our beauty regime than having the latest anti aging cream. The cells that make up your muscles, the liver, kidneys, heart, lungs, nerves, brain and your sex glands are all made of protein. And so is your hair, nails, skin and eyes! Protein is made from amino acids ‒ the building blocks for all cells ‒ and is therefore crucial for tissue repair and for the construction replacement of worn-out or dead cells, with the skin cells being replaced every 24 days. If your body doesn t have adequate protein, it can t regenerate cells properly, which is why you might to start to see brittle, lifeless hair, ageing skin and nails that are weak and prone to breaking. But just how much protein do you need? If you have a balanced diet and are eating a lot of chicken, fish or eggs, you might be getting all the protein you need naturally. 46g daily is what the average woman needs, but this will increase if you re active! If you need to top up your protein, there are loads of innovative ways to do this; vegetables contain protein too so load up your plate with greens and beans. Then for a healthy treat, enjoy your delicious Wheyhey protein ice cream!

Include these other nutrients to help boost your beauty naturally: • Zinc, which accelerates the renewal of cells • Selenium is an antioxidant mineral that helps protect the skin from sun damage; it also helps the skin maintain firmness and elasticity • Omega3 ‒ Although not classified as antioxidants, omega‒3 fatty acids help maintain cell membranes so that they are effective barriers ̶ allowing water and nutrients in but keeping toxins out. • Vitamin C ‒ great for helping prevent split ends • Vitamin E ‒ a powerful antioxidant that helps fight free-radical damage that leads to fine lines

My secret to fitness 032 Multi Vitamins & Suppliments Fitness & Beauty Professional

Trevor Pill, 31, is currently training for the Three Peaks Challenge. He leads an active lifestyle and focuses on nutrition to ensure he has enough energy and endurance.

The Three Peaks Challenge will see Trevor reach the summits of Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike, all in less than 24 hours. In total, the mountains are more than 3,400 metres high, which is more than 11 times higher than London s Shard (308 metres) and the Eiffel Tower (301 metres).

I am also taking a vitamin D3 supplement from Pharma Nord. Vitamin D3 will help to boost my immune system and is also good for bone health. It s important that my immune system stays strong in the run up to the challenge and during the 24 hours. Any colds could impact our training and slow us down on the day.

As part of my training I will be doing some trial walks, and also increasing my fitness by cycling to work and playing squash. Nutrition will also play a huge part. I am taking a supplement called BioQuinone Active Q10 which is proven to boost energy levels and so is great for endurance.

I m trying to eat foods rich in magnesium such as green leafy vegetables and cereals as the mineral has an important role in energy production. A lack of magnesium can result in fatigue and weakness, so I m taking a supplement called BioMagnesium too. The mineral is great for normal muscle functioning so will help with muscle recovery.

Top three supplements for greater endurance B Vitamins B Vitamins are usually most effective when taken in combination as a vitamin B complex.

Bio-Quinone Active Q10 Coenzyme Q10 is found naturally in our bodies, however our Q10 levels decline from our mid-twenties and are also depleted if we regularly engage in intense exercise. The vitamin-like substance is required by every cell in our bodies for energy production, and so many athletes and those with an active lifestyle take coenzyme Q10 supplements. It s important to choose a supplement that can be easily absorbed by the body. Pharma Nord s Bio-Quinone Active Q10 is specially formulated to ensure maximum absorption and results. A starter pack (20 capsules) is available at just £4.65 (RRP £14.65) for a limited time only. Visit www.multivits.co.uk or call 0800 591 756.

Bio-Multi Vitamin and Mineral from Pharma Nord contains 18 essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B12. The multivitamin also contains vitamin E, which is an antioxidant protecting our cells from free radical damage, and zinc and magnesium for energy.

L-Carnitine Clinical research indicates that L-Carnitine is beneficial in terms of optimising performance, delaying the onset of fatigue and enhancing the muscle recovery process. L-Carnitine is also helpful in ensuring that the heart receives the extra energy required during exercise. Try Bio-Carnitine from Pharma Nord, which contains the only biologically active form of carnitine For free nutritional advice call Pharma Nord on 0800 591 756 or visit:

5 Ways To Make Your Gym The Mecca Of Muscle You want bustling not bankrupt - check out these guidelines to keep your gym from being relegated to the past tense.

If you build it, the gym rats will come, right? Sorry, building a successful gym from the ground up is neither a walk in the park nor a piece of cake, and financial failure is the all-too-common case for most of the people with an itch to own a gym. The market is there. According to a 2009 study by the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association, 31 percent of all corporations subsidize employee health-club memberships. This study also noted that every university in the United States has a fitness facility on their campus, making it clear that more people than ever are using fitness to improve their health. Another study called The U.S. Weight Loss and Diet Control Market: 9th Edition estimated that 75 million Americans participate in some form of dieting. The key is finding the right niche, marketing to the needs of your local community, and bringing the customers through your door. Your wildest dreams can quickly turn into the worst nightmare if you aren t careful, so follow the strategies that have built the best and most successful gyms in the world. Here are some simple steps to maximize membership in your fitness center.

1. Think About Your Theme Picking a theme is simple if your gym is the only game in town. However, if there are already a few competitors out there, think hard on how to set yourself apart. At the basic level, you ll need cardio equipment, machines, and free weights. However in larger cities, newer niche gyms are beginning to pop up, such as boxing clubs that only consist of heavy punching bags hanging from the ceiling like bats in a cave. How is that popular? A lot of people come in for the power hour (not just boxers) and let off steam by pounding a 200-pound sandbag and doing some cardio. The draws are intensity and great music.

Other gyms draw an outdoorsy crowd with rock climbing walls or spinning bikes. There are even gyms that combine fitness and gaming to make your workouts truly virtual. Currently, the newest and most popular gym type is CrossFit. With timed workouts using lots of exercises and little rest in between them, these may be the ultimate timesaving full-body blasts. CrossFit has even become a competitive sport, and CrossFit gyms are sprouting up like weeds in an untended backyard. So think about the type of people you want to draw and focus on it. Whatever theme you choose, it should be one that fits some sort of fitness demographic. A good strategy is to keep

things simple at first, and then slowly build from there. Remember, it takes more than 10 years for most gyms to turn a profit, so be patient. For more value added, consider teaming up with a local physician or physical therapist to share space and provide fitness rehabilitation services.

2. Location, Location, Location Realtors say it all the time, and with gas prices as they are, the right gym spot is becoming increasingly important. You want an easy-to-access location with lots of free parking and plenty of outdoor lighting in a safe area. The cleaner, the better. Oh, and it would be nice to be close to a major highway. Location is one of the most timeconsuming and costly decisions you will have to make. It s common to see major corporations spend 70 percent of their investment value on the location of a new business. Avoid locations, like malls, that are prone to traffic congestion. In fact, it s good to visit a location several times between 7 and 9 a.m. and 5 and 7 p.m. (high traffic times) before deciding on a location to make sure it won t be the place people avoid. Try contacting a realtor to give you complete information on the location so you can make an informed decision.

3. Mapping Out Your Muscle House The floor plan of a gym is incredibly important, and should be decided by using updated computer-assisted design (CAD) software. The mood and feel of a gym is often decided in the first 10 seconds upon entering through the doors, so the way a gym is designed is crucial. Using CAD can provide virtual tours of your gym before it s even built, allowing you to know how it looks and feels before a brick is laid as well as giving you the opportunity to get new members before you open your doors. Get inspiration on how to place your equipment and front desk by going to popular gyms. See how they do it. In particular, locker rooms are an area you have to have dialed in. The number one gym complaint is locker room cleanliness. People don t go to places that are unclean, so this has to be one of your highest priorities. Budget accordingly because I have personally seen 12 gyms close because of fungus transfer from shower floors--frequent and recorded cleanings have to be the standard. Get showers and keep them clean so clients can keep themselves clean and not sue you. Also, remember to keep your locker rooms near the front and off to the side of the entrance to allow for easy staff and client access. This way you also minimize having a dirty floor in the winter by decreasing the distance dirty, wet shoes have to travel in the main gym area. It s also important to think about your windows. People love natural lighting, but having the sun blind or beat down on people already sweating and working in the gym is bad news, so be careful to properly place your windows and minimize negative sun influence.

Remember, your theme should match your floor plan for best results, but take the time to run through various scenarios like cleaning, working out, injury emergency plans, peak times, gym tours, and even day care. All of this out of the box thinking ahead of the design will go the longest in producing gym success for a long period of time. As far as equipment goes, it has to be safe. Risky gym equipment is a safety issue and a lawsuit waiting to happen. Consider keeping equipment that poses the most risk for injury, such as free weights and cardio equipment, completely visible from the front desk for fast response and proper monitoring.

4. Performance Equipment on a Budget Equipment isn t cheap, and you can spend $9,000 on a single piece of cardiac equipment like the Precore AMT elliptical. But if you re looking for safety and quality on a budget, contact a remanufacturing company like Commercial Fitness Solutions out of Dayton, Ohio. You can get the same equipment complete with warranty for less than half the original retail price. Sure it s nice to have brand spankin new equipment, but startups often have tight budgets. You can also check out craigslist, another site for finding all types of fitness equipment. You d be surprised at what you can find, but just make sure to check out the equipment before you buy it. Monolifts, squat racks, bench presses, Smith machines, and more are all there at a significantly lower cost. Sure, it takes some additional research, but it could save you 50 to 70 percent on equipment! Only work with reputable dealers, and don t pay until everything is built and in working order. The last thing you want missing is your equipment money, so

always check with the Better Business Bureau to determine if someone is legit or a sham.

5. Hit The Ground Running With A Pre-Opening Sale If you ve watched reality shows, you know how much hype is made before a show goes on air. The same goes for a gym. Before opening your doors, throw your name out there by offering virtual tours, showing your floor plan, getting some nice apparel with your logo, and getting people signed up for memberships. Many successful gyms use this approach--it s a great way to build capital quickly. Get involved at local events like parades or expos. This is a cheap and quick way to get you on the community radar. Or, you can do a televised challenge with a celebrity or some sort of contest to get the fitness juices flowing in your town. Tie in a good charity to the event and you can solidify the community s trust in you! For your pre-opening activities, make sure your staff is completely in the know about anything and everything. You have to follow up on phone calls, e-mails, and other inquiries or people won t think you know what you re doing. Get names and numbers logged for everyone you meet, and follow up with them for at least 90 days after opening. It s also about mutual respect: If you have a good facility and awesome customer service, that alone will bring 90 percent of the people back, and they ll use your facility with respect. But remember, you can t play favorites. If you give 10 percent of your members 90 percent of your time and vice versa, your gym will seem inaccessible and filled with snobbery. So there you go. Good luck! I hope to pay visit to YOUR gym someday!

Method:

Wheyhey Vanilla Ice Cream 2 large bramley apples 12 tbs xylitol/stevia 1 tbs of water Squeeze of lemon juice Cinamon (optional)

Crumble:

• 2 tbs coconut flour • 1 tbs porridge/oats • 1 tbs of coconut oil (I use it straight from the fridge which gives it the same • consistency as butter)

5. Place apples in a few jam jars or a small tin and cover with the crumble mix. Place them in the oven for about 10 ‒ 15 minutes until the crumble is crisp and a golden colour. 6. Remove from oven and serve with the amazing Wheyhey vanilla ice cream. *Make sure not to overfill the jars as it bubbles and pushes all the crumb mixture out so leave about an inch space at the top.

Clean Peanut Butter Cookies Ingredients: • • • • •

Directions:

- Yum!

1 280g jar of Natural peanut butter 2 eggs 3 tbs stevia (or more depending on taste) 1 tbs of Vanilla Essence Any flavor WheyHey ice-cream

1. Preheat oven to 175 C. 2. Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl, it might look too runny but if you keep mixing you will get a cookie dough consistency. 3. Get some cookie dough into your hands and roll into a ball. Repeat this until all dough is rolled up. 4. Place the rolled balls on parchment paper or a non stick cookie pan.

5. With a fork press down slightly on the cookie ball horizontally and vertically to create a flatter shape. 6. Place in the oven for 12 - 14 minutes depending on size. 7. When finished take them out and let them cool on a wire rack. 8. Get a spoonful of WheyHey ice-cream and place it on a cookie, sandwich it with another cookie on top. 9. You can also package them in some cling film and store in a freezer if you want them at a later stage.

So you ve started your New Year fitness regime, the workouts are long and hard and you put in 100%, but still not reaping the benefits you were expecting? You could be missing something in your nutrition. When we put ourselves through an extensive exercise regime, there s a higher demand on the body to function at optimum level, however when we are not eating or absorbing the right kind of nutrients, our bodies are put under strain and performance is compromised. Malnutrition is not only a huge problem in developing countries, but has become an ever increasing issue in first world countries, resulting in the same health detriments. There are an estimated 3 million malnourished people in the UK at any time, with many more at risk of becoming malnourished; (source: www.nhs.uk). Malnutrition, or vitamin and mineral deficiency, has been known to cause the following: • skin problems or rashes • swelling or oedema • poor vision at night or in dim light • feeling out of breath and tired all the time • bone and joint pain It is important to note that Daily Nutrition is very different to Sports Nutrition. When eating for sports training, you will require an entirely different diet, an excess of calories including high doses of protein at regular intervals throughout the day, and a balanced amount of certain vitamins and minerals. Normally you will be building muscle mass which requires the right amount of protein intake at specific times during your training routine. To find out more, go to the Anatomy Manchester website.

The NHS also states that the best way to assess malnourishment is by monitoring your BMI (Body Mass index) which essentially is your weight(kg) divided by your height (cm) squared. As simple as this calculation is, the BMI calculator does not differentiate between fat and muscle mass, as it only takes into account your overall weight. If you are lifting weights, your muscle mass will increase, actually elevating your BMI indicating an unhealthy outcome when in fact the opposite is true. BMI can therefore be a very inaccurate measurement of health and more fitness professionals are now looking at measuring body composition to establish an accurate assessment of health. A very quick, inexpensive and noninvasive method to measure body composition can be carried out with a portable Bodystat machine which uses bioelectrical impedance (BIA) to accurately measure the quantity of fat, lean muscle and water you have in your body. You are therefore able to track these measurements as you build muscle or lose body fat. This can be a very encouraging and motivational tool when embarking on a fitness regime, giving you insights and daily trending information to monitor your progress. To find out more, visit: www.bodystat.com or visit Bodystat at the Body Power Show from the 15-17th May in Birmingham on Stand M56 in Hall 19.

Purity with performance

Since stocking and using Beyond Organic Products in my salon, it has taken my business to a whole new level - thank you! -Sue Evans, The Roundhouse, Stroud, Gloucestershire.

Organic Skincare, Naturally

Why use organic and natural skin care?

• Award winning certified organic skincare • Founded in 2005 in Constantine, Cornwall • Rapidly expanding into Eastern Europe and Asia • 100% natural: no synthetic chemicals • Using an astounding 190 natural biologically active compounds in the products • 91% of respondents to a skincare trial said their skin looked younger after using the Beyond Organics Ultra Radiance range • Completely handmade in Cornwall and sold worldwide, including Europe and Japan. • The first company in Britain to be certified by Natrue • None of the products or ingredients are tested on animals • All products are suitable for vegetarians and many are also vegan friendly • A low carbon footprint and Fair-trade company, using all recycled and recyclable packaging • Winners of 26 prestigious beauty awards (including one already for our new Naturals E-Natural Cream, only just launched!). • ISO 9001 and 14001 certified proving quality and environmental responsibility.

And as if that wasn t endorsement enough... Earlier this year top model Jodie Kidd declared in the Telegraph that she loves Beyond Organic Skincare products, commenting that the range has the most fabulous moisturisers and hand creams which have all been made in Cornwall.

• As much as 60% of what you put onto your skin is absorbed into your body. And if you think about it like that, you should be just as concerned about what goes onto your bodies as what goes into it. • The cosmetics, perfumes and cleansers that many people use contain synthetic chemicals that are easily absorbed into the skin (or into our lungs when we inhale the scent) and these chemicals then rapidly enter the bloodstream. It certainly makes you think twice about what you put on your skin.

Nurture your skin with Nature s ingredients

• Beyond Organic Skincare was the first company to be Natrue-certified in Britain. The kitemark means more than natural ingredients and organic standards: it is also an assurance that a product or ingredient is green in other ways. The products are free from genetically modified ingredients and from paraffin oils and petroleum-derived ingredients too. • Beyond Organic Skincare s products contain organic sea buckthorn, organic omegas 3, 6, 7 and 9, vitamins and anti-oxidants. They have been proven in clinical trials to have skin cell regenerating properties, increase moisture content and accelerate healing. The range is 100% pure, 100% good.

Let nature nurture you with Beyond Organic Skincare. Available from:

REVIEW: Hotel Adler Thermae Sp Resort In Italy 3 day old bread, 40 minute breathing classes, no water with meals and no booze? The Mayr Clinic in Austria has a lot to answer for. Based on a very thorough detox diet devised by the eponymous Doctor in the early 20th century, Mayr believed there was a strong link between diet, digestion and health. So he set up a clinic where people could rest and purge. Holistic as it is, extreme regimes became all the rage ‒ you could arguably trace every single purging-based diet back to Mayr. The idea is to rest the digestive system by way of this detoxing, and the general result were positives ‒ from stress and insomnia to my problem, burn-out, exacerbated (I

believe) by my inability to switch off ‒ Mayr medecine works, or so I m told. Today, Mayr detoxing had had an overhaul. It's now considered to be the glam face of detoxing, and is subsequently practiced all over the wealthier parts of Europe. The former Mrs Putin is a fan, as is Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz and half the staff at Vogue. And now it s come to Europe, with the latest and newest adoptee being Tuscany s Adler Thermae Hotel, two hours from Pisa. Less regimented than the former examples, the Mayr-inspired programme here somehow balances a proper detox with holiday. Built to replicate a Tuscan villa, Adler is peppered with Italian ticks: granite arches, Cypress trees casting deep shadows and expensive-looking

vanilla walls. But its real shtick are the hot thermal springs, whose healing and cleansing qualities have been scientifically proven, situated in the vicinity meaning the hotel s two pools are naturally fed and watered by a local spring. The Mayr-esque Balance detox programme is the closest thing to the Mayr experience as it gets without detracting from a holiday. Provided meals are eaten at exact times ‒ 7.30am, 12.30pm and 7.30pm - you drink your leg weight in water and eat what is prescribed, you can almost pretend you re not detoxing. It s very much 70% holiday to 30% health. The rooms, gym and multi-faceted spa are on the lower level. Everyone has a view of the Unesco Heritage site, for the most part uninterrupted.

Fitness & Beauty Professional 059 Clinic ‒ there are cold showers, ice buckets, breathing classes if you want ‒ and married them with some wellabove average chillaxation: Ayurvedic massages; macadamia nut scrubs; a salt water steam room; a lavender caldarium; a proper, naked Finnish sauna and vast dark caves full of steam and naked honeymooners. I spend most mornings being iced, like a bun, in algae. Sometimes while floating in water. I have my back rubbed, my diaphragm stroked while I count to seven. I m taught to chew and breathe. The rest of the time I m naked in a steam room or lolling outside on a sun lounger beside wealthy Milanese men closing financial deals in their Speedoes. It s a detox/retox for the dedicated, time poor of Italy s elite, although come Summer, I m told it s full of Brits, Americans (Amanda Seyfried recently visited) and Austrians desperate to flee their own version of Mayr.

pa & Relax The grounds constructed to mimic the landscape; smooth, casually undulating and kempt. From my room, I can see the villa they used as Maximus home Gladiator. It s Spring and the blossom has settled in. Daisies and crocuses have congregated, boulders shield the steaming thermal bath of the 1000 square metres of indoor and outdoor pool, naturally heated to 37C. Two big wings extend either side of the main villa, housing 80-orso rooms. The 150-odd guests amble about in their robes. Everyone everyone remains en robe until 7:30pm, when they complete an aesthetic u-turn, and dine in their Sunday best. Though strict, Adler adopts the bearable parts of the Mayr

Two days in, I have my first session with my allocated Mayr doctor in which I am assessed over 10 pages of questions about body complaints and lifestyle, before being weighed and measure and wired up to assess first my nervous system and again to assess any nutrient imbalances. She guesses I work too much, never relax and sleep badly with night sweats. My body, it transpires, is less crying out, more quietly weeping.

She prescribes a diet ‒ more potassium, more zinc, more vegetables, no cow s milk, salmon or tuna. Eggs, sheep s yoghurt, beef ham, smoked trout fillets, rice cakes or spelt roll, also. Bread is fine in limitation: this is not about losing any weight. We just need to bolster your system with vitamins and nutrients. You need reserves . She also suggests carrot and apple juice and more fruit. Smoking and coffee though seem fine ‒ after all, this is Italy. The session descends therapeutically as she suggests I stop being so hard on myself, stop trying to be the best, start delegating, turn my brain off and accept where I am and who I am everyday through deep, deep breathing exercises. But enough of the health, I think, taking notes. The concept is not a million miles from mindfulness and to be honest, I can think of worse places to do it. Less than a week in, and I feel extraordinary. The transition from social media monkey to zen took a couple of days, but now I positively sweat health. I am sleeping regularly and deeply, have more energy than I can remember to the point that I m starting to get bored of the relaxation. At that point, I log onto Twitter and immediately remember why I came. Perhaps it s time to go before I switch off completely.

Functional training What is it and why should you do it?

Whether you are a gym junkie or an absolute novice, chances are you have heard the term functional training mentioned somewhere. The fitness industry is used to having fads and trends that come along which every trainer and his dog will buy in to. These fads and trends usually tend to disappear as quickly as they arrive, yet functional training is one of the most widely used terms within the industry in the last decade - which is a strong indication that it is certainly not going away anytime soon. However, there is a huge problem ‒ the word functional is widely misunderstood and misinterpreted... until now!

Common belief is that to be functional you should perform all exercises standing on a BOSU or lying on a stability ball - training sessions are beginning to resemble circus acts rather than familiar strength training. The true definition of functional training is simply to enhance your ability to execute the movements required during your day to day life . Whether you are a professional athlete, a bodybuilder, an accountant or a housewife then you will have certain requirements of your body in order to deal with the specific rigours of your daily life. The human body is an incredible machine however it is limited to a small number of movement patterns. Every movement we perform throughout every minute of every day falls into one of the following eight categories: push, pull, squat, lift, rotate, smash, carry/move a load and gait/locomotion. Whether you are kicking a ball, opening a door, picking up some litter or doing the gardening your body will be working within at least one (often more) of the aforementioned movement patterns. We are all limited to the same number of movement patterns, but the intensity and range of movement required can vary greatly. For example a professional boxer throwing a punch and a retired pensioner turning on a light switch are both executing a push movement pattern (hand moving away from the shoulder), but the intensity and range of movement required by each person are worlds apart. In my opinion the intensity and range of movement of the training should be equal to or greater than the daily requirements of the person because you want them to start to find daily living easy. No more groans and grunts when getting up off the sofa or tying their shoelaces. If their training is at an intensity lower than their daily requirements then the risk of injury will always exist, but it can be reduced by exceeding these levels (exceed them gradually and sensibly - doing too much too soon can also increase risk of injury). Think about what you do for a living and what hobbies you have, and start to think about how you can replicate the movements your body requires. Don t just listen to someone telling you to stand on one leg on a stability ball with your eyes shut because that s their interpretation of functional and NEVER do anything just for the sake of it or because you saw it on the internet. I teach Functional Fitness Workshops on a weekly basis so if it s something you are interested in learning more about then feel free to get in touch. I am more than happy to answer any questions (mark.laws@jordanfitness.co.uk, @marklaws2011, @jordanfitnessuk), if you don t ask you don t get! Remember, if it improves your ability to move then it is functional. Move better. Feel better. Look better. Be better!
