E

stablished 33 years ago in October 1982, Touch Ironmongery is one of London’s leading ironmongers. Originally called “A Touch of Brass”, the firm changed their name in 2003 in reaction to slowly advancing market changes in architectural ironmongery which is no longer supplied solely in brass, and to also reflect the broader range of products and finishes that they sell. In fact today, Touch can supply a wide range of finishes including Brass, Satin Brass, Polished Chrome, Satin Chrome, Polished Nickel, Satin Nickel, Copper, Bronze -solid and plated, BMA, Antique Brass, Black, Pewter, Ceramic, Leather, Stainless Steel, Satin Stainless Steel, Gun Metal, and the list keeps growing. Whatever finish you require, Touch can help you get the right look. Touch occupy their recently refurbished showroom at 210 Fulham Road, Chelsea, where they display a vast range of their 5,000 products. With a customer base including Interior Designers, Builders and individuals who are interested in the top end of the

Ironmongery market, Touch mainly supply to residential premises but hotel and office properties also contribute to their vast clientele. The company also have a healthy export market to all corners of the world, namely the Middle East, Europe and the Americas. Touch’s owner and founder, Bill Benham, has 33 years’ experience in the ironmongery trade, as do his colleagues Jim Haselup and Alan Blanchard. Saleem Qureshi is the newest member of our team and has 10 years’ experience, meaning their knowledge is unrivalled in this industry. The range of products supplied by Touch date from circa 1640 French (Louise XIV) and cover all subsequent periods (Georgian, Edwardian & Victorian), art deco and contemporary pieces also make up the product ranges. In addition, Touch showcases the very best of British manufacturing; the best ranges are still produced in the Midlands by craftsmen in factories dating back 200 years or more. Touch also sell European manufactured goods

which is considered to be of a very good quality and in recent years they have introduced some of the far eastern made products, albeit in a limited range but cost effective. With trends continuously evolving, new innovative products are constantly under development. Touch understand that keeping up with the fashion-shifts is imperative in order to provide every customer with the best solution for their requirements. Ironmongery can be a difficult and complicated aspect of a building project, as a result Touch aim to take this awkward aspect and make it user friendly and clear to understand by offering an onsite service where they carry out a detailed door by door, window by window, room by room Ironmongery schedule, highlighting all requirements and identifying any items that can be refurbished. Refurbishment is a large part of the business; Touch will undertake complete ironmongery refurbishment projects, and can restore old paint covered door furniture to their former glory, looking as new, at a fraction of the cost to replace.

NEW AIRTIGHTNESS SEMINAR FOR ARCHITECTS ARCHITECTS can take advantage of a new initiative from tape sealant specialists ISO-CHEMIE, which explains airtightness in construction sealing joints and options for its improvement. he seminar has been designed specifically to advance architectural knowledge and understanding of airtightness and related issues, enabling architects to improve the design and construction of buildings and boost their technical and product expertise.

T

Delivered onsite within the practice and contributing towards formal CPD training, the one-hour long programme covers advice on effective window installation techniques, and how to identify and locate air leakage. Guidance on the latest airtightness products and sealing solutions is also covered, which includes details of ISO-CHEMIE’s range of gap sealing solutions ISO-BLOCO WIN2WALL and BLOCO-ONE. ISO-BLOCO WIN2WALL enables quickly and easy sealing from inside the building, the product will seal gaps from 2 mm to 8 mm, accommodating the vast majority of UK window

•4•

installations, and comes in 2 widths to give the extra thermal insulation equivalent to A Rated (40mm tape) or A+ and A++ windows (64mm tape) WIN2WALL is also weather tight to 600 Pa and has excellent acoustic insulation properties. Installing a window or door using WIN2WALL will give the window an equivalent or better thermal property than the window unit itself. Even the smaller 40mm size tape will give the joint between the window and wall a U-Value of 1.2, equivalent to an A-rated window.

Easy-to-apply, the self-adhesive ISO BLOCO ONE provides sealing for window and door joints up to 30mm wide and is impermeable to driving rain at a minimum of 1,000 Pa - 66% higher reliability than most conventional joint sealing tapes.

Up to 70% cost savings can be achieved when using the ISO-BLOCO ONE foam tape for high performance window sealing, rather than the current three component systems.

The internal air tight seal has been tested at 1000 Pa pressure difference (20 times more than UK Building Regulations.) and found to give less than 0.1 m³ of air loss. At the same time, depending on tape width, it will also provide a U-Value of 0.55 and reduce sound by 63db

THE foam tape enables installers to quickly and easily seal windows from inside the building, avoiding the need to use time consuming and costly external access systems like scaffolding and ladders.

For more information or book a seminar contact Andrew Swift, national sales manager, ISO CHEMIE. tel. 07837 337220 or email a.swift@iso-chemie.co.uk

Vic Roberts, founder of York Modelmaking, reflects on his time working with Architects, and advances in technology. The advances in technology have given model makers additional “tools” to help produce physical models to stunning effect. Laser cutting allows for ever more intricate detail that it just wasn’t possible to produce quickly and cost effectively in the past. Similarly 3D printing allows for detail such as Ionic columns on the Georgian façade model to be re-created perfectly. The staff at York Modelmaking still posses the traditional skills in painting techniques and hand finishing that bring their models “to life”, something for which they’ve always been renowned. They also still have the full workshop tools and skills to quickly and economically produce massing models and mock-ups (much faster indeed than a 3D printer!)

A tangible image with immediate impact A physical model provides an immediate clear vision to professionals and their clients alike. Whether you are wishing to express initial ideas and concepts with a simple “card model” or finished designs expressing material finishes and surrounding context, a model provides a tangible image with immediate impact. As well as for the presentation of ideas and designs, they can be an imperative support in augmenting sales.

An equally important role in illustrating the internal use of space And of course models don’t have to just be of the external structure of buildings, but play an equally important role in illustrating the internal use of space, functionality of a building and the flair of the interior designer. A field in which York Modelmaking has become very adept is the specialist area of the ergonomics of the work place. Industrial models with metallic floor plates and components incorporating magnets, allow for designers to try many and varied layouts to maximise the potential of the space, plant and ultimately how the workforce will function within the space. With the added bonus of being an ideal training tool on completion. The wealth of experience of this long established business is clearly demonstrated on their Portfolio style website.

“ I’ve seen many changes in architectural practice over the past half century. Some just passing trends, but many advances enabled by investment in new materials, technologies and engineering skills, that all bring new and exciting potential to the Architect’s desktop. Equally, the presentation of designs has evolved, with 3D printing being the latest addition to many architectural practices, as well as the model maker’s workshop. As architectural practices embrace BIM, there’s still a place for physical models – providing threedimensional understanding of structure, space and form. I’m proud of the skills and dedication of the York Modelmaking team, and the great results they produce to the inevitable tight deadlines ” - Vic Roberts, MD

Kebony introduces its newest window wood German Association of Windows and Facades adds Kebony Clear to prestigious list Kebony announces that Kebony Clear has now officially been approved as a window wood by the Verband Fenster und Fassade (German Association of Windows and Facades, VFF). Kebony, a beautiful wood recommended by leading architects, has been used for years in window installations worldwide and last year the wood was officially recognised as a suitable product for the window industry. Following additional research and a series of tests by the German Institute for Window Technology, ift Rosenheim, Kebony Clear made from Pinus Radiata has now also received this recognition as a suitable product for the industry, making all Kebony Clear woods viable for use as window woods. The patented Kebony technology is an environmentally friendly process, which modifies sustainably sourced softwoods by heating the wood with furfuryl alcohol - an agricultural by-product. Once modified with Kebony’s patented process, the Radiata timber has an average bulk density of 0.63g/cm³, with an equilibrium moisture content of only 4.7 % at standard climate. The process of heating sustainably sourced softwoods with furfuryl alcohol polymerises the wood’s cell walls, providing the modified Kebony Radiata with a high level of dimensional stability, with maximum swelling and shrinkage reduced to values of 2 %, a value that is comparable to tropical hardwoods. Kebony’s versatility as a material has rendered it invaluable for the construction of everything including exterior surfaces, terraces and windows - working to create a uniform appearance throughout. Kebony timber is easy to work with; it can be processed in the same way as hardwood without the need for special precautions during sawing and profiling as a consequence of the low dust and VOC emissions.

CUSTOM-MADE NATURAL POLYX-OIL TREATMENT DURABLE YOUR STYLE

One of the greatest advantages of using Kebony Radiata as a window wood is its 30 year warranty against rot. When succumbed to testing and 12 months of outdoor weathering, Kebony showed no signs of damage to the outside coating, according to ISO 4628 (the standard evaluation of degradation of coatings). Additionally, this wood responds especially well to paint and varnish, thus confirming Kebony works as the perfect material to be use in window frames. Per Brynildsen, Chief Technology Officer at Kebony, “To be given this approval is a fantastic achievement, especially as the requirements in Germany are very high and we are extremely proud that Kebony is able to meet them. This is the result of numerous laboratory and practice tests, as well as Kebony’s

continued focus on delivering a top-quality product. The testing has been incredibly thorough; the Norwegian Institute of Wood Technology, the University of Göttingen, SHR Holzforschung in Wageningen, SP in Stockholm and Wilhelm von ThünenInstitut in Hamburg have all meticulously examined the properties of Kebony Radiata under a magnifying glass. The Institute for Window Technology in Rosenheim then undertook a number of tests on the material, joints and complete windows before fully approving the wood for window use.” For further information on Kebony Clear, window manufacturers can refer to the annexes of the new guideline HO.06-4 of the Window and Facade Association. These can be downloaded directly from the website www.window.de.

CRL shines the spotlight on an eco-timber house in Aberdeenshire AN ENERGY efficient, eco timber house in Aberdeenshire has been crowned as a winner of a campaign that shines the spotlight on self-builders.

CRL

is delighted to announce that “Heartwood” in Aboyne is one of three winners selected to take part in its Venturous Builds campaign – an inspiring new web series that is showcasing Britain’s inspiring self-builders and their construction achievements.

The stunning three-bedroom home is insulated using recycled newspaper and recycled glass. With 216 m² of living space, there is also a double height dining room from which you can see the vaulted timber ceiling, with views over the beautiful rolling hills of Deeside.

Local couple Vic Kirwan, 68, and Teresa Green, 66, have been selected by the structural defects insurance specialist as being truly venturous of spirit.

Vic, who lives in Aboyne, said: “It was always our dream to build a timber home that was highly energy efficient. Construction is almost complete and we look forward to moving into our new home. Thank you to CRL for recognising how unique and energy efficient Heartwood is.”

Vic, a retired broadcast engineer, and Teresa, a dental receptionist, commissioned Stommel Haus, a German manufacturer of timber houses, to develop a custom built, energy efficient eco timber house. The campaign, which saw CRL launch its logo into space, aimed to inspire those who have dared to be venturous, brave and unorthodox to share the details of their venturous builds. Winners have had their project filmed and featured on the online show. The third episode of Venturous Builds is now live on the CRL YouTube channel “Heartwood” was built only using untreated Arctic Heartwood Spruce from FSC certified forests in Finland.

•10•

The house is heated using a heat pump and ground-breaking technology “Heating with Ice”, which uses ambient heat and solar thermic energy.

Barbara Fischer-Clark, of Stommel Haus, said: “Heartwood is a fantastic bespoke home and we are delighted to be named as one of the Venturous Build winners. What sets this property apart is the owners ecocommitment, Vic and Teresa have used ground-breaking technology to ensure it achieves the highest in energy efficiency, while working with a German partner to deliver the home of their dreams.” Filming is now complete on these unique projects. All three episode of Venturous Builds are now live. The Venturous Builds web series is hosted by English designer and regeneration expert Wayne Hemingway.

CRL CEO Steve Mansour said: “We’ve been blown away by the quality of all of the entries we’ve received for our Venturous Builds campaign. You’ve proved that the UK has some truly venturous self-builders and developers. Thank you to everyone who entered.

“However, we were looking for the one-offs, the inspiring, the ingenious construction projects to feature in our Venturous Builds web series. Vic and Teresa clearly demonstrate that they have the courage, determination and an unwavering belief in their ability to create something truly unique.

INDUSTRY News

“Venturous builds celebrates the pioneering self-builders who, against the odds, have dared to dream big and have created the homes of their dreams.” Commenting on the winners, Wayne Hemingway said: “My wife and I designed and built our own home 19 years ago when our kids were young and it has been a true life enhancing experience ever since.

“Designing and building your own home is about getting something you really want, rather than getting a house someone else has designed or settling for what’s on the market. Vic and Teresa clearly knew what

they wanted when it came to their home and they clearly are revelling in the results. “Venturous Builds celebrates fantastic self-built homes and shows it’s about the spirit of getting on and doing it. It is truly inspiring to witness the people and the love of what they have achieved at the end of the process.” CRL does not shy away from arranging insurance for unusual projects, including new builds, complete or partially completed builds, timber frame constructions, prefabricated properties, mixed-use projects,

conversions and insolvent properties. The construction insurance experts recognise that every opportunity is different. With CRL there is no set criteria – just an appetite for adventure. For more information about CRL please: •

Ecobuild

overhauls floorplan with exciting new format as architectural collective Assemble bring Turner Prize winning art to 2017 show • Ecobuild 2017 to transform into a City concept and bring regeneration to life • Renowned conference returns with key industry partnerships and big name speakers • Dedicated “Redefining Sustainability” zone in partnership with Green Building Councils

INDUSTRY NEWS Turner Prize-winning architects Assemble are to headline Ecobuild 2017, bringing their award winning Granby project to the show as part of an immersive new experience. During an exclusive launch event, an entirely new and exciting city-based floor plan format was also revealed for the show. Bringing the event’s theme of regeneration to life, Ecobuild 2017 will see ExCeL London transformed into an immersive ‘city’ – complete with main street, distinct destinations and special feature attractions. Central to the experience will be Regeneration Drive, a boulevard running through the middle of Ecobuild, linking different aspects of the exhibition and enabling visitors to experience the very best examples of innovation and creativity from across the built environment. Martin Hurn, Brand Director at Ecobuild, explained: “For 2017, we’re completely overhauling and innovating the Ecobuild experience. We asked our visitors what they want and need from the show, and sustainability overwhelmingly came to the top of the agenda. To deliver this, we’ve

ripped up the floorplan and reinvented Ecobuild as an immersive city centred around Regeneration Drive. “Imagining the exhibition as a city allows us to deliver a unique programme focused on regeneration, in a way that is relevant and inclusive to all our exhibitors and visitors. Different aspects of construction and the built environment deserve specific focus, and each of the Ecobuild 2017’s destinations will each have something distinct and exciting to offer.” Ecobuild also announced key collaborations with Lead Partner UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC), the Construction Products Association, the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE). As they make their way up Regeneration Drive, attendees will be introduced to key destinations such as The Arena, City Hall, The Campus, The Gateway and The Performance Lab. The Arena will be home to the headline guest speakers, staging a range of keynote speeches from industry thought leaders and innovators across the three days. Included within the programme will be world-renowned architects and MPs from the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Construction. The UK-GBC will also be hosting daily leadership panels chaired by their CEO, Julie Hirigoyen. The show’s sustainability hub, City Hall, will be home to the UK-GBC and World Green Building Council. Featuring two seminar theatres, this arena represents the culmination of Ecobuild’s Redefining Sustainability campaign – which seeks to create an industry-wide understanding of sustainability objectives and drives, and a clear direction for the future. Architectural collective Assemble will present its award-winning Granby Workshop project at the Campus, the show’s destination for innovative thinking and the latest technology. Visitors will be able to view and interact with a unique installation created by Assemble, telling the story behind the collective’s Turner Prize

winning regeneration project. Attendees will be also able to interact with Future Materials, a gallery curated by ARCC, previewing next-generation materials and processes currently in either research or testing stage. The Gateway will allow visitors to explore national and social infrastructure projects in partnership with ICE. The Performance Lab, meanwhile, will showcase the latest in Smart Home and Smart Building technology in association with Ecobuild 2017’s building performance partner, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers. The city will also contain a number of other areas of interest, including The BRE Academy, The Business District, international pavilions and a dedicated District Energy Town Square created in conjunction with the UK District Energy Association. The organisers are encouraging exhibitors to get involved with the immersive city theme, inviting them to create their own destinations along Regeneration Drive and across the entire event. Hurn added: “The 2017 show is shaping up to be the most impactful and exciting in recent years. There’s a real appetite within the industry to redefine and create a universal vision for what sustainability will mean in years to come, and we have revamped Ecobuild to ensure it is the perfect platform to lead this discussion. “With the support of our partners, we’re shining a spotlight on the best examples of innovation and creativity in the industry with demonstrations of new products, smart technologies and ground-breaking materials. We’re also particularly excited about the presence of an impressive collection of international exhibitors, and hearing about best practice sustainability from around the world.” Free registration is now open for visitors. How to Make a Home Accessible Without Compromising on Style Accessibility of the home is an important consideration in any building project. A home lift provides an easy and stylish solution for those who struggle with the stairs. our typical self-build client will invest their heart and soul in their project to realise their dream home, so accessibility should be a major consideration to ensure the lifetime value of the project. Design criteria such as Lifetime Homes are growing in importance, helping to ensure that homes are fit for the less mobile. There are many considerations; from access into the house, the layout inside, the width of the hallways and doorways and of course, the stairs.

Y

Finding the right home lift for your client’s needs Incorporating a home lift into the original plans will give your clients the means to future proof their dream home, allowing them to stay put well into retirement and add value to their property. New Access Solution for T Loughborough University One of the UK’s top 15 universities, the prestigious Loughborough University, based in the heart of the UK, recently contacted Invalifts as they were adding a new extension for the Science Department and needed it to be easily accessible to all staff and students.

he MC2000 lift was chosen, as this space efficient platform lift offers the perfect balance of low running costs, reliability and high quality engineering. The two floor lift was specified in a special RAL colour in order to blend in with the surrounding interior design. To further enhance the aesthetics of the lift, and maximise natural light through the staircase, it was decided to glaze one side of the lift shaft and fit doors with glazing panels in them. Due to the positioning of the lift within the building, the doors to the lift needed to be on the long side of the shaft. In order to allow easy access into the lift 1M wide doors were fitted on the unit with automatic openers. For additional reassurance, an auto dialler was installed on the unit in case of emergencies. Building work on this project took just 2 days as the MC2000 only required a 60mm pit, the clear vertical hole and the single phase electric supply. Due to its self supporting structure it does not need any form of supporting wall or machine room. The university were thrilled with the final result. This is one of many lifts that Invalifts have installed in commercial locations throughout the UK including lifts at the BBC, Next, Aldi and Wickes. To find out more about the MC2000 platform lift, you can give Invalifts a call on 0845 468 2543 and speak to one of their friendly experts.

A Complete Composite Decking Solution by Elite Outdoor Living made-to-measure sections at our warehouse. Along with the high span capabilities, and less jacks required, this all served to save the time and reduce the manpower required for installation, which was all passed back to the customer in terms of lowering costs.

A recent customer of ours required a low-maintenance decking solution for a large outdoor area surrounding two sides of their newly built home. They had considered more traditional timber decking systems, however, preferred the idea of spending more time enjoying their outside spaces rather than worrying about regular oiling, staining, and/or varnishing. We were able to suggest our RESORTDECK composite decking range which is matt finished for a more realistic texture and natural finish. This was high on our customer’s priorities as was durability and safety. We were further able to guarantee our customer that RESORTDECK won’t rot, splinter or crack and is a safe

outdoor flooring solution due to it’s high slip resistance and anti-static properties. The planned decking area was to be built over uneven soil so we recommended our QWICKBUILD marine grade aluminium substructure as the base. This would ensure that despite the uneven surface, our customer’s deck would be level and straight, and more importantly, it would remain that way. QWICKBUILD is an extremely versatile sub-frame system which spans 5 metres without supports and offers 100 per cent moisture resistance for vastly superior durability and dimensional stability. We were further able to prefabricate the frame in

The first decking system to eliminate screws for fastening the boards to the frame when used with RESORTDECK, QWICKBUILD has proven popular with architects, specifiers, and home DIY enthusiasts alike. Our system creates straight and level decks over grass, soil, concrete, pavers, existing tiles, and waterproof membrane. Installation is fast. Materials are low maintenance yet designed to last. ACCESSIBLE GUIDANCE

With the growing need to make homes adaptable so occupiers can remain independent, and in their own homes, new guidance is aiming to help get it right.

‘Design Guidance & Considerations for a Domestic Accessible Toilet/Wetroom’ has been produced and published by Clos-o-Mat. The white paper gives advice to ensure that all aspects affecting the functionality and practicality of a bathroom, wetroom and toilet, as occupier needs change, are considered.

“Bathrooms are the most common form of home adaptation, to the extent the Lifetime Homes criteria have been amended to accommodate occupant personal hygiene issues,” explains Robin Tuffley, Clos-o-Mat marketing manager. “Now, future installation of a hoist should be included in newbuild designs. hower enclosure specialist, Lakes Bathrooms, has launched PureVueHD, an optically superior, low-iron glass that appears entirely clear. This new high quality glass is being offered as standard on shower enclosures, doors and bath screens in both its Classic and Coastline Collection, so no incremental charge will be made for this high-end, ultraclear look.

PureVueHD has minimal iron content, meaning that the glass appears clear, rather than having the green tinge that is visible in standard glass. This is because very high transmission levels, of around 90 per cent, enable as much light as possible to pass through PureVueHD glass, making everything viewed through it appear lighter and brighter. With standard glass the iron content reduces light transmission, which creates the green hue that tints everything viewed through it and is particularly noticeable on the edges of the shower enclosure, door or bath screen. This dramatically clearer glass allows the bathroom’s colour palette to be viewed with untainted accuracy. The difference in colours, sharpness and enhanced clarity that PureVueHD makes in the bathroom is like the vivid quality brought to the living room by high definition TV. Whilst low-iron glass can cost as much as 50 per cent more due to the higher grade of silica that it demands, Lakes Bathrooms is supplying it as standard; without adding to its prices. So this visual luxury is now part of all products in its Classic and Coastline collections (excluding only the Mirror range).

Lakes Bathrooms launches ultra-clear PureVueHD glass without charge

•20•

The choice of PureVueHD products includes shower enclosures, shower doors and bath screens, with over 40 styles. The latest walk-in ranges are included, plus heavier thickness glass, which shows even more strongly the contrast between standard ‘green’ and this new ultra-clear glass. PureVueHD products start from £145.00 plus VAT and are detailed in the latest catalogue from Lakes Bathrooms. For more information or to find the nearest stockist visit www.lakesbathrooms.co.uk

Green is so last year

Standard glass has a green tinge

PureVueHD glass is optically superior and ultra-clear

Standard glass always has a green tinge that’s particularly apparent when you view the edge of the glass. PureVueHD by comparison is dramatically clearer. Its reduced iron content reduces the greenish hue to zero levels, so the glass almost disappears and the natural beauty of anything seen through it truly shines. From anybody else this dramatic advance would carry a significant premium. From Lakes Bathrooms, where superior comes as standard, this extra clarity comes with no extra cost. Your local Lakes representative will be pleased to show you a side by side comparison and explain more about the brilliance and immediate availability of PureVueHD enclosures, walk-ins and bath screens.

However, if you live in Bristol don’t get your hopes up as the West Country city emerged as the Bah Humbug capital of the UK, spending just £376 on Christmas gifts. The research also revealed that as a nation we spend the most on our sons - £95 on average - followed by daughters who get £92 spend on them.

It’s also not good news for the nation’s put upon dads who get just £41.55 spend on them while mums get £52.17. Ironically despite having an extra £10.62 lavished on them, mums feel they get a rough deal at Christmas.

A spokesperson for Spring Fair, the UK’s leading gifting trade show, which commissioned the study into Brits festive spending habits, said: “After over 60 years of running the show our exhibitors have always told us that most people don’t just shop on price, it’s more about finding the right gift. There’s lots of different ways to measure generosity – some people spend more and others like to put the due time, care and attention into selecting just the right thing for their loved ones.”

The survey also revealed that mums are the best when it comes to buying gifts (21 percent) for the family, followed by thoughtful daughters (14 percent).

60 percent of us claim we generally get what we want for Christmas, with 42 percent of people saying they would rather have a practical gift, while a further 58 percent have their heart set on something more

85 percent of people polled said they preferred to give gifts rather than receive them, with dads proving to be the most difficult member of the family to buy for.

As a manufacturer, we can make our products to exacting precision, enabling us to meet the requirements of architects, interior designers, property developers, builders and contractors. We have manufactured and supplied switchable technology in a wide range of

A few typical uses of our switchable glass are as follows-

Double Glazing

The PDLC switchable layer is coated on the inner surface of a panel of glass, then combined with a second panel to form a sealed unit. Utilising a warm edge spacer bar with an argon filled air gap between offers superb insulation and performance. We can even tailor the glass to your requirements, offering low iron and low E coating options to provide the most efficient switchable glass on the market. Easy to install, just like any standard double glazing sealed unit, you can enjoy the benefits of switchable and insulated glass without the need for maintenance or special cleaning requirements.

Bathrooms A common application of our technology is for shower/wet rooms and hotel bathrooms, providing stylish discretion for your customers. Between our switchable double glazed units and our switchable laminate glass, we have your bathroom privacy needs taken care of. Switchable double glazing offers a great alternative to blinds and curtains, which are often a source of difficulty in bathrooms, both in terms of style and in maintenance. Switchable laminate glass is also very popular in bathrooms, enhancing any wet room divider, shower screen or dividing glass wall, stylishly partitioning a bedroom or en-suite.

Partitions & Doors Our switchable glass offers more applications for partitioning than just in bathrooms. Great for use all over the home, we can turn any glass, acrylic or plexiglass into switchable privacy glass. Using switchable technology makes achieving the desired cutting edge design possible, adding an interior design wow factor that binds and curtains just can’t match. Some of the more exciting applications we have seen recently involves automating our technology. For example, by placing switchable glass in an automatic glass door, the clients were able to automate the glass’s transparency to only activate when the door opens, providing privacy the rest of the time.

Frameless and Elegant:

Flat lightboxes complement designs The age of energy-efficient, LED illuminated signs and displays is rapidly catching up with trends in Architecture and Design. Lighting is no longer an aspiration for strictly defined business sectors, but a global trend that has to do with advertising and visibility for sure, but also related to environmental and safety specifications. In recent years, the key architectural trend in retail developments became the use of transparency and light. Retail surveys indicate that people are attracted to brightly illuminated spaces and signs. This has sparked a mini revolution, not only in building designs, but also in displays and fixtures. Dedicated to a philosophy of omni-solutions for all project based businesses, Vista System has been a leading developer of way-finding sign systems for the past 2 decades. It has been a natural evolvement from our illuminated modular signs, towards light boxes that take advantage of these trends in illumination and transparency. One exciting, new product, the Flat Light Box (or FLB) - a frameless lightbox technology, is available both in single and double-sided formats which allow for seamless integration into architecture and fixtures. Versatility leads to creative applications Vista’s custom-fabricated lightboxes have a multitude of applications, including: interior and exterior retail signage; building facades; trade shows; exhibitions and events. In addition to a range of standard-size lightboxes, bespoke solutions are encouraged. All lightboxes are composed of an aluminum frame and a pane (or 2 panes) of frosted substrate. For easy change of graphics, the frame opens on one side, allowing the graphic substrate to slide into specially designed channels. Generally, a lightbox uses LED light similar to daylight (5,000–6,000 kelvins (K)) and has uniform light strength on the frosted substrate. Graphics must be done using light emitting material for maximum effect. Single Sided lightboxes can carry both 2mm polycarbonate (white translucent) or more durable 5mm plexiglass / perspex surfaces. Double sided lightboxes are more sought after when parking spaces and safety zones require proper wayfinding solutions. This impressive versatility ensures a very bright future for this exciting product line! Classic with a Modern Twist

Of course a sense of tradition and warmth for the past often shapes our thinking with modern decor and so it is hardly surprising that Vicaima has seen a trend for panelled doors making a noticeable return over the past year. In response to this latest vogue, Vicaima have reinvigorated their Classic K range to provide a modern twist to an old favourite with some exciting new finishes. The Vicaima Classic K Range takes elements of shaker styling but with a more up-to-date and appealing look for the modern generation of interior panelled doors. Available in 1, 2, 3 and 4 panel designs, together with glazed options, Classic K doors offer a solid construction with real veneer faces, together with white or primed

A bright future ahead for the Laindon Shopping Centre! “A regenerated Laindon Shopping Centre is the fresh start Laindays Geoff Pearce, Swan’s Executive Director of Regeneration and Development. Swan Commercial Services, a subsidiary of Swan Housing Association, submitted a planning application in November that proposes wholesale redevelopment of the failing shopping centre to bring about a brand new high street with shops, a new Swan office, a modern health centre and homes. Swan widely consulted on its plans and was delighted that 83% of those local residents who participated in the public consultations support the proposals. Swan is eagerly awaiting Basildon Council’s decision on whether to approve the plans, which is expected in Spring

2017. They are keen to get the long awaited regeneration underway and have indicated that, should Basildon Council approve the planning application, enabling works could begin by the end of 2017. Swan are now asking local people who want to see Laindon Shopping Centre transformed to show publicly their support. If you want to find out more about the plans, or if you want to register your support, visit www.laindonfutures.co.uk . You can also show your support by submitting your comments via Basildon Council’s website

- www.basildon.gov.uk/eplanning using planning reference: 16/01594/FULL Geoff Pearce, Executive Director of Regeneration and Development at Swan, added: “We are eagerly awaiting Basildon Council’s decision on our planning application to help build a bright future for Laindon, that has a vibrant new high street with shops, landscaped space, homes and a re-provided health centre at its heart. The redevelopment of the Laindon Centre is long overdue and our application is the chance for a fresh start and, if approved, will give Laindon the retail led regeneration it has waited so long for. We have worked hard to develop a viable plan for this regeneration and are determined to succeed where so many other previous owners have failed. We are thankful for the huge support we received from people in Laindon and Langdon Hills during our in-depth consultation and we urge local residents who support our plans to get behind us by endorsing our plans once more to help ensure that, this time, we really can make this regeneration a reality.”

Boxed rooflight used in unique restoration

Located in the Jumel Terrace Historic District of Washington Heights in north Manhattan, this late 19th century 3 storey apartment house on 432nd W 162nd Street has not only been returned to its former glory, but has been beautifully enhanced with a state-of-the-art kitchen and stunning contemporary bathrooms. The glazed three-wall box rooflight supplied by Glazing Vision is a stunning 21st century addition to this property, helping to successfully unlock that all-important roof top space in this metropolitan city.

D

ixon Projects, a real estate company with a substantial portfolio of property around New York and New Jersey, were keen to realise the huge potential of this attractive old colonial townhouse. Built in 1899, set on a plot of 1,911 sqft and offering almost 3600 sqft of internal space, it presented an eclectic mix of original features – very high ceilings complete with decorative moldings, huge windows, as well as a plethora of rich historical fittings and fixtures. This included dark hardwood floors and doors, elegant tiled fireplaces, wood paneling to the stairwell to complement the ornately carved balustrade, and exquisite cornices and architraves. The impressive front entrance, reached from the pavement by imposing stone stairs, looked out onto a wide avenue with established trees. The location itself was also superb: just around the corner from Manhattan’s oldest house, the Morris Jumel Mansion and a stone’s throw from the lush playgrounds of Highbridge Park on the River Harlem and Roger Morris Park. Dixon Projects, together with the local architect RMF Bryant, have succeeded in combining the old with the new in this grandiose house right from the basement to the roof. A floor-to-ceiling glass wall opens up the innovative wet-bar and relaxing lounge area on the basement level to the garden and patio. The parlour level exudes grandeur thanks to the top-of-therange gourmet kitchen and renovated dining room, complete with a large decking space for outdoor dinner parties. The impressive hardwood staircase has

•46•

been retained and painstakingly restored, and this elegantly links the parlour floor to the upper floors where the luxurious finishes continue into bright rooms that accommodate additional living areas and ultra-modern bathrooms.

Roof terrace accessed by box rooflight It is on the roof that Dixon Projects were especially ambitious and forward thinking. Keen to utilise the huge space on the flat roof top as well as to add further value to the property, Dixon were looking for an innovative and contemporary “glass box”. This needed to maximise the amount of natural daylight coming into the floor below whilst offering easy access to the terrace. A lack of suitable options from American glazing suppliers led Dixon Projects to look abroad. Following extensive research and an on-site meeting with Glazing Vision’s senior management, Dixon Projects

decided upon Glazing Vision’s three-wall box rooflight, which offered both the high quality and technical features that they were seeking. Approval from the “Landmarks Preservation Committee (LPC)” had to be secured for the box rooflight as the house was a listed property; a critical requirement to this was that it should not be visible from the roadside/pathways. Once approved, the box rooflight was then precision-engineered to the size required by the client, manufactured entirely at Glazing Vision’s factory in Suffolk, England, pre-assembled, crated and finally shipped to Dixon Projects in NYC. In addition, the installation of the box rooflight including pre-install surveys and remedial building work to ensure the surrounding walls on the roof top were straight were all supervised by Glazing Vision’s own office in the US.

Windows doors and Architectural Hardware

for terrace access project The box rooflight was fixed onto 3 walls without the need for additional balustrading, thereby facilitating the full use of the roof top terrace. The lack of visible kerb fixings through the use of an extruded external clip-on cover, together with the sleek aluminium framework in a classic slate grey exterior finish and the perfectly edged glass-to-glass joints combined to create a stunning, contemporary “glass sculpture” to the top of this grand property. The decorative balustrade used on the small stairwell up to the box rooflight mirrored the interior design and gave a nod to the history of the house. A critical consideration for Dixon Projects was that the box roof light should be simple and safe to operate. The retractable glazed section, which slides over the fixed section of glass, is operated at the touch

of a button. This provides a clear 50% opening and sufficient head height for easy access. Thus the resident can climb the stairwell whilst the rooflight is retracting into its open position, without having to “bow their head”. The secure manual override also detects movement during the open/close operation to provide the essential safety features. As with the floor-to-ceiling windows on the lower floors, so too the large glazed sections of the box roof light were in keeping with the airy aesthetic that Dixon Projects had created throughout the house. The box rooflight ensured that the interior of the upper floor of the house was flooded with natural daylight during the day. At night the resident could enjoy an unadulterated view of the night sky.

The box rooflight provided the prerequisite easy access to the new roof top terrace, which had been fitted with complimentary decking and a minimal, steel parameter balustrade that added to the sense of openness and light. The full expanse of the rooftop now provides the resident with an additional “room with a view”: an enviable place to entertain guests, to dine in the open and to relax. Most impressively, occupants can enjoy the amazing 360 degree views towards the beautifully restored iron High Bridge, the adjacent parklands running alongside the Harlem River, and ultimately towards the iconic skyline of downtown Manhattan. To find out more about specifying rooflights for access, download our Part K whitepaper, or browse our new box rooflight range here.

The treatment plant you choose should be around 95% efficient thus allowing long intervals before de-sludge is required. The waste water must be cleaned to a standard meeting the usual discharge level requirement, you must apply for either an exemption certificate or permit, before making a discharge we can assist with this and advise on the method of discharge, be it a ditch, stream, watercourse or soakaway. As the system breaks down and aerates the solids, the introduction of non-degradable items such as wipes, sanitary products etc. should be avoided at all times in any treatment plant, this will clog up the system and increase the

need to empty the unit, follow this instruction and typical emptying will be around 3-5 years, it is also recommended no medicines, or

harsh chemicals enter the unit, try to stick to Eco brands and stagger washing throughout the week.

R

innai’s latest innovation in the energy efficient fast delivery of instantly useable hot water is the Infinity Solo Re-Circulator water heater.

The Rinnai Infinity Solo condensing and low NOX water heater is the first of its kind for the UK to combine the advanced technology of wall mounted continuous flow water heaters with a stainless steel storage cylinder, all in one compact footprint. The design parameters of this product empowers specifiers, designers, installers and engineers to benefit from unique Rinnai technology in applications it was once not previously possible. For instance, the Infinity Solo will have both 35kW and 54kW sized appliances, ensuring sites with a smaller gas meter can readily use this technology. The larger Infinity Solo model will also act as a high-efficiency alternative to gas fired storage appliances that exist in today’s market. The cylinder is stainless steel and this reduces the weight compared to glass lined models, and it makes transportation and installation a lot easier. As well as the difference in weight, the cylinders also have extremely low heat loss figures (as low as 1.41kW/h day), so the user pays less to maintain the heat within the tank. One other benefit of the Infinity Solo using a stainless steel cylinder is that the life expectancy of the material is far greater than that of a glass-lined equivalent as glass suffers from thermal shock causing it to crack after a period of time. The Infinity Solo range is also renewables compatible and supplied pre-fitted with a coil, meaning that the primary energy source will

Rinnai Goes Solo For Continuous Flow With a Store…. always be from renewable gains and the complementary Rinnai water heater will only apply the precise amount of gas to boost the difference in temperature. Rinnai manufactures the energy efficient Infinity range of gas fired continuous flow water heaters and space heaters. The Infinity brand carries the widest range of condensing water heaters on the market today with the most impressive efficiencies in operation, leading the field in technological innovation.

Heating Ventilation and Insulation

RECOVERY SERVICE

As Building Regulations continue to move us towards more airtight homes, Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) systems are increasingly being considered the ideal choice, by architects, in new properties - and an increasingly popular one in refurbishments too. Lee Stones, category manager for Xpelair, looks at the factors which are driving a surge in the specification of heat recovery technology in the home. It will come as no surprise to architects that specifying a good ventilation system has become as prevalent to property-owners as efficient home heating. With increasingly stringent Building Regulations, a drive towards energy efficiency and increased insulation options for existing properties, homes have become more ‘wrapped up’ than ever before. Whilst these measures are ideal for reducing monthly heating bills, the lack of adequate ventilation can increase the presence of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), mould and damp within the home, contributing to poor IAQ. Couple this with many homeowners keeping their windows closed to avoid additional heating costs, security issues or road noise and it’s clear to see why the quality of air in our own homes is becoming an increasingly important health consideration throughout the UK.

Whole House Ventilation Where the choice of ventilation is concerned, it’s no secret that whole house ventilation wins out in the efficiency stakes, and certainly for new build properties it’s a no brainer for housebuilders and architects to opt for whole house systems like Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR).

MVHR is ideal for new builds where insulation levels are high. Available as a centralised, whole-house system or single room units, this proven technology extracts moist, stale air from inside the property and replaces it with fresh, incoming air. Crucially, it uses heat from the outgoing air to warm the incoming air and high efficiency systems can recover up to 90 per cent of the heat that would have been lost through normal extraction.

Meeting regulations with ease While following the Passive House model is voluntary, the design principles deriving from the pilot project set unprecedented standards of energy efficiency in residential building design. The good news for architects and housebuilders is that compliance is easy. Current Part F regs single out MVHR units, such as Xpelair’s new Natural Air 180, as the most sophisticated ventilation systems available. Provided it is specified and installed properly, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery will ensure housebuilders can meet Building Regulations for new properties, whilst also improving SAP ratings. It’s no wonder this technology is proving so popular!

Energy credentials One of the most obvious benefits of MVHR is its energy saving potential and this is a key factor in the rise of its specification in the new build sector. Using waste heat from the outgoing, stale air to warm fresh, incoming air can reduce heating bills, of course, and for those organisations with a large stock, it can deliver significant carbon reductions. For the best results, MVHR systems such as Xpelair’s new Natural Air 180 – launching in April 2017 - can play a vital part in a whole-house approach to energy saving and carbon reduction, which includes an intelligent active humidistat that reacts in real-time to rapid increases in humidity – providing a boost, on demand. The flow rate in the Natural Air 180 is boosted only as needed, minimising energy costs and further reducing acoustic output.

Boost your IAQ However, energy efficiency is not the only driving force behind the increasing specification of MVHR. We spend more than 90 per cent of our time indoors and whilst there is a global understanding of outdoor air pollution, few people realise that indoor air can be as much as 50 times more polluted than outdoor air. Dust, pets and fumes from cookers or fireplaces, as well as drying clothes indoors and excess moisture from showering can all contribute to poor IAQ, which in turn can have a serious impact on our health. The importance of IAQ should not be underestimated. Mould or condensation in the home can aggravate pre-existing health conditions such as asthma and eczema, whilst high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from

everyday household items such as polish or air fresheners can also lead to symptoms including fatigue, rhinitis, dizziness, headaches, coughing and sneezing. According to a YouGov consumer survey, conducted on behalf of BEAMA, 58 per cent of UK adults have experienced mould or condensation in their homes and 19 per cent of those claim to have suffered from a respiratory or dermatological condition. The remaining 81 per cent are considered to be at risk. The key, of course, is to ensure adequate ventilation in the home, reducing the build-up of condensation, black mould and the spores which it releases. The solution? A constant volume MVHR system. Xpelair’s Natural Air 180 uses Intelligent Adaptiflow Sensing to deliver constant volume performance. The motor operates by constantly assessing the performance of the impeller and, when there is a consistent change in airflow- caused by back pressure - the motor adjusts the speed of the fan to maintain a constant volume of extracted air. What’s more, with the Internet of Things changing the face of the heating and ventilation industry, we can expect to see some exciting add-ons and integrations to MVHR systems in the coming months. By working closely with leading manufacturers such as Xpelair, architects can stay ahead of the game and take advantage of an exciting change for the industry.

Heating Ventilation and Insulation

Herschel is completely changing the way we heat ourselves How it works: Herschel Infrared heats buildings the same way the sun heats objects and the surface of the earth. It uses far infrared energy to warm up the thermal mass of buildings (the walls, floor and ceiling) and all the objects inside it, including people. In turn, these surfaces become part of your radiant heating solution, creating a continually warm, comfortable environment. Why is infrared (radiant) heating better than convection heating? Convection heaters warm air, which does not retain heat well, naturally rises and disappears on draughts. Radiant heaters warm objects in the environment directly which warm up and subsequently radiate back the warmth, meaning much less energy is required to maintain the desired comfort levels. Even the best market leading ‘low consumption’ digital electric convection heaters need circa 40wm3 versus Herschel panels that typically only need 25wm3. It is much more efficient to heat the room itself than wasting energy heating the entire air volume.

Where is it being used? Herschel Infrared heating can be used for almost any application from living rooms, bedrooms and conservatories in homes to restaurants, schools, offices, sports halls and warehouses. Herschel offers heating solutions for domestic, commercial, industrial and even outdoor environments. Herschel Infrared solutions are widely used throughout the UK and as far and wide as Europe, New Zealand, Australia and Jordan and heaters have been installed in a number of leading UK high street stores, hotels, universities and bars. For refurbishment, renovation and new-build properties, Herschel infrared provides heating that can be powered by renewables, is easy to install, maintenance free, zero light and completely silent. It can be easily

controlled providing maximum flexibility so you only heat those areas that need heating, when you need it. Charlie Luxton, TV Presenter and Architectural Designer, has recently installed Herschel into his new eco self-build. “I wanted an efficient, cost effective and easy to install electric heating solution to complement a solar PV installation for my recent eco self-build in Cornwall. We are half way through our first winter and the panels are exceeding expectation, the house is warm and comfortable without knowing where or how it is being heated”.

Heating used to be boring, not anymore…….. Herschel heaters are available in a number of different styles and finishes depending on the application itself as well as budget and personal choice. Slimline panel heaters have been specially designed for heating rooms, with a choice of finishes including glass, mirrors, picture panels and a discreet white. Indoor and outdoor space heaters provide effective heating for large spaces and those applications requiring zoned heating See our website for more information.

The only product with BBA and NHBC approval to guarantee clean, mortar and moisture-free 25mm clear cavities!

SureCav25 helps drive down U-Values A design feature of SureCav25 in maintaining a perfectly consistent, clean and moisture-free clear cavity, gives rise to the situation where a brick outer leaf can be specified. Ordinarily, it would not be possible to keep the cavity clean with just a 25mm gap. But now, with SureCav25, the wall can be built with full confidence. What is more, where a 100mm overall cavity is specified, U-Values of just 0.18 W/m2K can be achieved by installing 75mm of insulation. Now drive down U-Values with the help of SureCav25! SureCav25 allows for more room in the cavity for insulation, thus enhancing the thermal performance of the wall. SureCav25 will release an additional 25mm space in the cavity that can be used for extra insulation. All the properties of SureCav50 you’ve come to rely on - but now just 25mm deep - with a guaranteed 25mm clean and moisture free clear cavity.

Insulation Options using SureCav25 Brick or stone outer leaf - lightweight block inner leaf (0.15) plus 3mm skim on 12mm plasterboard

Forms a 25mm clear cavity Space for extra insulation Helps to lower U-Values

Semi-dry stone walling on SureCav® cavity spacer system.

The “wall” of plastic, formed by the SureCav25 panels shields the cavity and inner leaf from water ingress. The unique shape of the pods directs any moisture to the outer leaf, thus protecting the fabric of the building. SureCav25 is proving to be an essential construction element in all exposure zones, including severe.

The SureCav25 Cavity Protection System is currently being used successfully throughout the entire country and is designed to maximise the integrity of the cavity environment whilst providing the best spacer system available on which to construct the outer masonry leaf, be it brick, stone, slate or flint. Testimonial: David Lees, Director, Lees Munday Architects “Brilliant idea you had! All the semi-dry stone walling is on SureCav. The stone is Cotswold Stone, 150mm on bed, laid semi dry to conceal the mortar. We wanted it to look like random walling without regular, level, coursing. The walling craftsmen were able to achieve this random effect with SureCav”.
