Scanomat, founders of the revolutionary TopBrewer coffee machine, have launched an innovative stand-alone juice tap called TopJuicer.

Juice tap freshens up hotel breakfast service

T

he minimal footprint and stylish appearance of the TopJuicer is ideal for hotels, cafes and restaurants looking to serve a range of fresh, healthy beverages in a fast, clean and efficient manner.

Simon Bracken, Managing Director & Co-Founder of Scanomat UK said: “With TopJuicer we have completely reimagined juice machine design to offer a cutting-edge alternative way to serve juice in busy, self-service environments. The TopJuicer concept allows operators to present juice in an entirely innovative and disruptive way that will delight and surprise consumers, whilst satisfying growing demand for healthier drink options.”

No queues, no mess, no fuss.

The TopJuicer makes the perfect accompaniment for self-service breakfast buffets and conference refreshment points as a contemporary alternative to tabletop machines or refillable juice jugs. The bagin-box juice rack is hidden under the surface, leaving the counter clutter and mess free. The aesthetically stunning swan neck dispenses up to 3 different types of juice, plus chilled water, with the option to add sparkling variations through a modular undercounter unit. The TopJuicer tap is height adjustable and swivels to allow for total flexibility of service. It is also possible to tailor to specific glass sizes as required. Each drink is dispensed within seconds with the ability to serve up to 300 glasses per hour! From an operational perspective, the TopJuicer is really simple to clean and maintain, simply attach a new bag-in-box when the juice is running low. The system cleans itself between each drink to ensure optimum hygiene levels and zero crosscontamination of juices. “Juice is often overlooked in hotel breakfast areas,” adds Simon. “I have seen many examples where the juice area has become messy and sticky, often with jugs left unreplenished. The TopJuicer removes a lot of manual labour and looks good to complement the rest of the breakfast service. The minimal design lends itself perfectly to an island setting to provide a modern juice bar destination.”

Still & Sparkling The innovative TopJuicer can serve a range of different juices and smoothies, including orange juice, apple juice and cranberry juice. The optional sparkling unit adds a new dimension to the drinks menu by providing deliciously refreshing sparkling juices and water on tap.

App-control The TopJuicer is kept up to date with the latest technology and is entirely app-controlled. Guests operate the TopJuicer by selecting their drink from an accompanying iPad or tablet. Alternatively, users can download the free TopBrewer app and connect to an available machine. The app connects automatically via bluetooth low energy connection and the machine dispenses the selected drink within seconds! To find out more visit www.scanomat.co.uk

Royal Lancaster London

One of Europe’s Leading Banqueting Venues

Launching September 2017

R

oyal Lancaster London has entered the final stages of its highly-anticipated £80 million renovation, spearheaded by Studio Proof. The hotel has remained open for business throughout the refurbishment and is delighted to announce that the works will be complete by September 2017. At this point, the mid-century icon will reinstate its original name of ‘Royal Lancaster London’ in time for the hotel’s 50th Anniversary.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Works include a dramatic new entrance façade, the creation of five individual lounges in the lobby and the redesign of all 411 guestrooms and suites. Upon completion, there will also be a new reception area for the hotel’s expansive Nine King’s banqueting suite, with a double-height walkway from the front door right through into the Nine Kings lobby. The reception will be designed in the same style as the main lobby, upscaling the whole Nine Kings experience.

4

As one of the largest meeting venues in Europe, the hotel is renowned for its grand banqueting spaces. Prior to the current renovations, an additional £15 million was invested in the Nine Kings Suite, the Westbourne Suite and the state-of-the-art banqueting kitchens. With a total of 16 meeting spaces, Royal Lancaster London’s conference rooms can cater for events of all sizes, from boardroom meetings and conferences, to exhibitions and gala dinners for up to 3,000 guests. Royal Lancaster London can also host over 800 guests in-house, as the 411 guestrooms and suites all feature zip-and-link beds, with no requirement for a bedroom block. The hotel attracts a diverse range of clients, from charitable organisations to corporate firms. Averaging 480 events annually, events encompass meetings, awards, dinners, AGMs, literary lunches and industry events. Impressively

40% of events are from returning clients as the events team have nurtured long-standing relationships with a number of high-profile clients. As a pioneering venue, the hotel works with its clients to ensure the venue’s facilities best suit their needs. The ‘Senses Room’ is an innovative concept which allows clients to enjoy a complete preview of their event, as the session replicates every detail of a guest’s specification, from the colour scheme and decor, to the lighting and music. During the transitional phase, Director of Events Gareth Bush and his highly skilled events team have ensured a smooth and professional service and the highest level of sincerity and integrity. This has been supported by first-rate catering overseen by Event and Banqueting Head Chef John Robinson and Executive Head Chef and Director of Food & Beverage Ben Purton. Recognised for its excellence in catering, the quality of the food is evident from the hotel’s two award-winning restaurants. The ethos of Royal Lancaster London is “we always care”, and all team members make it a priority to deliver memorable moments throughout their relationship with events clients. Situated in a prime central London location, the venue has excellent transport links for both local and international conference delegates. Lancaster Gate Underground station is adjacent to the hotel, while Paddington Station encompassing the Heathrow Express is a short five minute walk away. Brighton hotel roof given artists makeover The artists invited guests to experience their work for themselves, taking local residents, hotel guests, and friends of the artists to the top of the i360 to view the mural from above. Guests were also given access to the artwork on the property’s rooftop, an exclusive experience which allowed all in attendance to truly immerse themselves in the art. The mural is visible from the new British Airways i360 tower, giving Brighton residents and tourists a bird’s eye view of the artwork, and drawing attention to the Holiday Inn Brighton - Seafront as a local landmark. Debbie Priestley, Holiday Inn Brighton - Seafront’s general manager, said: ‘We’re honoured to have our hotel transformed into an artwork by Art+Believe, and are thrilled to become a real-life piece of art for visitors to the i360 tower.” Alex Pritchard, CEO of Kew Green Hotels, which manages the property, said: “We always welcome the opportunity to work alongside local talent and communities, and are sure

Art+Believe’s fantastic artwork is really going to set the Holiday Inn Brighton - Seafront apart from other seafront hotels in the area.” Daniel Doherty, co-founder of Art+Believe, said: “We have painted spaces in many countries, from the favelas of Brazil, barrios of Colombia,

neighbourhoods of Buenos Aires, and steps of Chile to the roof tops of India. We constantly challenge ourselves and ask ‘where is art possible?’ and are grateful to Kew Green Hotels for providing us with the Holiday Inn Brighton - Seafront as a space to explore our art within our hometown of Brighton.”

Developers Allied London and Levitt Bernstein Architects have submitted plans to transform the Granada House building in to a 210-room hotel complete with restaurants and bars.

A ‘glowing box’ structure will house the restaurant above the hotel, built on a series of columns to create the sense that the dining room is floating above the building. The studios were the headquarters of Granada Television and later ITV Granada from 1956-2013, when they were sold to Allied London and Manchester City Council for £26.5m. Both Allied London projects are currently in the planning stages and are due to start on site later this year.

Squires Hotels relaunches The Hydro Hotel following £1m makeover

The 78-bedroom hotel, which overlooks Lake Windermere, was acquired by Squires Hotels in 2014, with the group immediately identifying the need for an upgrade, having been untouched in 20 years. The property called in designer Heather Bennani of Notabox, while the building work was carried out by Team Northern. The bedroom count has gone from 81, down to 78, to accommodate bigger rooms, with the project marking the first phase of a three-stage development at the hotel.

More work is planned for the coming year, including the rest of the bedrooms and leisure facilities, along with the outside grounds.

Star Micronics revolutionises

with DIRECT iPad Receipt Printing via standard Today restaurateurs have the choice of the traditional POS terminal or new and innovative tablet POS which has taken great strides in recent years to provide the flexibility and mobility increasingly required within hospitality environments. However, it has been hindered by concern for communication and connectivity issues with cable-free communication being affected by obstacles such as brick walls and even fridges and microwaves. However, the undeniable advantages of tablet POS are too attractive to ignore:

• Lower cost hardware • Lower cost software • Use of consumer devices

meaning less training and a familiarity for employees

• More compact footprint combined with lower costs will allow for a higher number of POS stations with shorter transaction times

F Hotelier & Hospitality Design

rom modern restaurants to 17th century country pubs, retail technology has to operate in often very diverse and challenging environments and, as a result, more traditional cabled POS terminals have been the preferred option resulting in more expensive installations. This situation is further compounded by the fact that tablet POS receipt printers need network connections and cabling for reliable printer connection and tablet charging when cable-free communication is not considered suitable.

10

Faced with these issues, multisite operators have been reticent to take advantage of the flexibility and costsavings associated with mobile tablet POS. Blanket decisions could not be taken across estates in terms of POS solutions with each venue having to be tailored according to the location, type of venue and volume of transactions. Managing an estate of multiple tablets and paired Bluetooth devices means that it can be operationally difficult to maintain the right connection between the right peripherals and devices.

• More modern, stylish

design of hardware for today’s restaurateurs

• All the known advantages of mobile POS Cloudbased software

• Mobility to carry out the transaction / order

• Ability for customers to use their own devices

• Pre-order on retailers’ apps possible

So how can restaurateurs successfully combine the advantages of tablet POS with the reliability of cabled POS terminals? Star Micronics has always led where others have followed when it comes to mobile tablet POS, partnering in 2009 with Square who famously started the move in the US towards greater flexible card payment technology with credit card payment simplification. Since then, Star has pioneered change within the POS printing industry partnering with undoubtedly the largest selection of tablet POS software houses and integrators today.

It goes without saying that in recent years, software houses and restaurateurs of all sizes have increasingly veered towards Apple iOS POS solutions due principally to aesthetic and perceived quality. With this in mind, Star has introduced the new TSP143IIIU with a unique key feature - the printer can communicate and charge simultaneously and directly with an iPad or iPhone. As well as working with a traditional POS terminal, the Star TSP143IIIU USB printer can connect directly to an iPad or iPhone using the Apple supplied lightning cable for reliable USB communication as opposed to previous iOS wireless only technologies. As a result, the usual Bluetooth or WiFi / wired LAN set-up issues around pairing, network infrastructure, connectivity etc are eliminated from a hardware perspective. No other stand-alone POS printer can achieve this today. Simplicity itself, the iPad / iPhone can talk directly to the printer just as a USB printer talks to a traditional terminal, providing restaurant chains with the reliability required in high volume transactions or environments where wireless communication is difficult. This unique printer will now allow multisite operators to make blanket decisions across their estates by successfully combining the flexibility of tablet POS with the reliability of cabled POS terminals. Star’s success with a large number of software houses has been achieved via its attention to detail regarding SDKs and documentation enabling easy integration. Star’s experience is that many software solutions already

The TSP100 series will remain the principal tablet POS printer series of choice due to its vast connectivity models including Bluetooth and WLAN, while the TSP143IIIU is the only USB printer on the market today that can communicate directly with Apple devices.

From Pool to Party at The Haymarket Hotel The Haymarket Hotel is at the heart of London’s theatre district and is situated next door to the famous Haymarket Theatre Royal. The seventh property opened by Firmdale Hotels, it offers a unique townhouse style of decoration courtesy of Kit Kemp Interior Designs. Upon first contact by Firmdale Hotel’s contractor, a solution was needed in order to use the Hotel swimming pool area as an additional function/events room which would then be used for conferences and weddings. With a proposed pool size of 18m x 5m and depth of 1.5m, Stage Systems were asked to provide a versatile solution that could be assembled and stored with ease. The Pool-dek system is designed using a metal framework and engineered timber panels and can be used in both fresh water and salt water pools.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

What we did

12

Stage Systems Project Manager met with the client on site in order to discuss requirements and allow the client to view samples of the product. After an initial discussion the client decided that they would like to match their new Pool-dek cover with their interior design, which was a beautiful oak finish. The client also decided that they would like a parquet finish to the decks, as this would add further character to the bar area where the pool is located. Once the final decision had been made, the decks themselves were sent to the flooring company Schotten and Hansen in Germany in order to provide the parquet oak finish that the client required.

The Outcome Since completion, staff and guests at The Haymarket Hotel have experienced all of the advantages of Pool-dek. After being provided with initial training by the Stage Systems team, the 25mm thick German oak panel floor can now be easily installed within a few hours by the client’s installation team. This quick and easy process means that the swimming pool does not have to be out of use for long periods of time, allowing guests to enjoy the full experience that The Haymarket Hotel offers.

Feedback The Haymarket Hotel has had a significant return on its investment, with a room hire rate (including the use of Pool-dek) of £4,800 per day (incl. VAT). Pool-dek is used on average 12 times a year for weddings, functions and other promotional events in the Brumus Bar area of the hotel. Fresh from the Farm

The pressés are available in both 750ml and 330ml glass bottles, as well as 425ml premium PET bottles. These creative flavours can be found in local delis, food halls, farm shops, garden centres, pubs and cafés across the country. Named after the Welsh farm that has been in the family since 1903, the company began producing bottled mineral water in the nineties as part of the Radnor Hills brand on their site in Powys, Mid Wales. William’s family wanted to create a drinks range that reflected the heritage of their beloved farm, thus Heartsease Farm was born.

Using its very own fresh spring water as the foundation for its beverages, Radnor Hills pay keen attention to the ingredients that are used to make its range of sparkling premium pressés. With other concoctions like Apple & Rhubarb and Raspberry Lemonade, the company errs on the side of sophisticated flavours, and even has smartly-designed bottles to suit the theme. This was a conscious decision, admits William. “Central to our business belief is to create products that look and particularly taste better than those of our competitors. With that central core value in mind, we have assembled a team of experts in developing and producing delicious products. This is where some great ideas turn into reality.”

William believes that the Heartsease Farm pressés complement Radnor Hills’ other range of beverages. “We have become a onestop shop when it comes to soft drinks,” he says. “Buyers can order mineral water, flavoured water, healthy school compliant drinks, fruit juices and premium adult pressés all from under one roof!”

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Radnor Hills have been busy carefully concocting a seventh flavour to add to their Heartsease Farm Premium Pressè range, introducing a Strawberry & Mint Pressé. Made with sweet juicy strawberries and refreshing garden mint making this the perfect drink for the warmer weather!

“There was a clear gap in the market for a really premium range of sparkling pressés that are bottled in both glass and plastic,” says William. “Many outlets can’t stock glass and this gives them the chance to sell a super-premium pressé range in plastic bottles. It’s because of this, and many other reasons, that Heartsease Farm is performing extremely well.”

The Daddy (Red) in 1680D Polyester with waterproof PVC backing.

Pouf Daddy is a designer flexible furniture brand, cheeky and lively in spirit, deadly serious when it comes to the quality of the design, fabrics and innovation in its products. Designed to be flexible from the range of fabrics to the number of colours from bright primary colours adding contrast for sundecks or cool white, grey and taupe for minimalist style. Launched just 18 months ago, as an online business, the next 12 months the brand is pushing ahead to grow its business, expecting to see Pouf Daddy products sold through quality traditional retailers, direct to business customers and into new markets. Pouf Daddy will be showcasing its new range of outdoor leather furniture and new colours and fabrics for 2017

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Inspired on the island of Mallorca in the Balearics, surrounded by beach clubs and large outdoor terraces, the idea grew from the realisation that despite the availability of similar products, no single company was producing a range of product with the diversity we wanted.

26

Pouf Daddy Universal The Pouf Daddy ‘Universal range’ is a midpriced range, universal as it’s priced to suit most budgets, designed for use anywhere – inside and out, to withstand normal domestic use. Made with our own 1680D polyester - the highest thread thickness and durability polyester giving added strength, much higher than other bean bag companies. We like the finish this gives, not only that the fabric is made inherently to BS5852 standards but also add a PVC coating on the back which makes the fabric waterproof.

Pouf Daddy Pouf Daddy Denim Denim hardly needs any introduction, we have produced our favourite styles with our favourite fabric – denim. Like a favourite pair of jeans, they just get better and better (without the rips LOL). With our easy to use filling system, emptying the bag could not be simpler, allowing you to wash your cover as many times as you like, getting that well-worn faded look. With yellow stitching, pockets and leather label and red tag, this is a great looking range of flexible furniture. Pouf Daddy Interiors Why should velvets, linens, leathers be the exclusive domain for your sofas and armchairs? As you can tell by now Pouf Daddy believes that furniture should be flexible. We believe that even the stuffiest of drawing rooms would benefit from some luxurious – and eminently comfortable Pouf Daddies, take the Velvet Jubbly, Faux leather Guvnor or the Linen Curve, these are not only great to look at but incredibly comfortable. Pouf Daddy Premium We have worked with a fabric manufacturer in Spain to produce a fabric, and colour palette that takes us to the next level. This is a solution dyed acrylic which is water repellent, mildew resistant, anti-abrasion and the highest UV rating possible. This really is one of the most highly engineered fabrics available. This product is designed for prolonged use outdoors (although perfect for interiors too) and can withstand extremes of weather, high levels of intense sun, dampness and just general heavy use so also perfect for hotels, beach clubs and if you’re lucky enough your yacht. If you’re

specifying furniture where abnormally high levels of wear and tear are likely, Pouf Daddy products made with this fabric is ideal, highly flexible and highly durable. The material can be made to pass all necessary fire safety specification including CRIB 5 and PVC coated to be made waterproof. The fabric is inherently soil and water repellent and best of all it can be machine washed. In addition to this range we offer the products in 3 colour variants in an outdoor faux leather with similar guarantees Products featured Rose Gold Extended Curve and Vintage Guvnor in outdoor faux leather The Pouf Daddy Bespoke where you chose exactly what you want. We have hooked up with Europe’s largest distributor of high tech fabrics where every aspect of a fabrics behaviour is tested to the max. Either choosing from a huge selection of patterns and colours from the ranges of acclaimed manufacturers of high tech acrylic fabrics such as Sunbrella, UV Pro and our own acrylic fabric, woven, 100% solution dyed acrylic yarns, with a minimum of 5 years warranty against fading from harmful UV rays. With realistic minimum order quantities and fast turnaround, we are happy to quote for free on any project. LOW MAINTENANCE DECKING THAT STANDS THE TEST OF TIME

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

James Latham is seeing the popularity of its premium quality composite decking ProFi soar due to its outstanding performance properties which include minimum maintenance, superior stain resistance, extra high impact strength and a high friction surface.

28

These impressive features mean that ProFi - which is manufactured in Germany by UPM - is perfectly suited to the hospitality sector, ensuring that despite high traffic and almost constant use, as well as continuing to perform to optimum levels, the deck will remain looking fresh for years to come. In addition to withstanding staining from food service, drink spillage and other exterior factors such as birds, it will also stand up to the constant moving of chairs and tables plus, it can endure extreme temperature changes (-40°C to +40°C) from the extreme cold, snow and ice of Northern Scandinavia to the searing heat and relentless sunshine of the Middle East.

2017 sees UPM ProFi celebrate its 10-year anniversary as one of the leading European WPC decking producers. In that time, the boards have benefitted from continual research and development and this year, UPM are revisiting decks installed during the first years of manufacture which are still looking fresh and modern and performing well 10 years after installation. ProFi Deck comes in two stunning design styles, UPM ProFi Classic Deck and UPM ProFi Design Deck. UPM ProFi Classic Deck range offers the beauty of a hardwood deck without the high maintenance. Wood and cellulose fibres are encapsulated in specially selected polymers to provide lasting protection from the weather.

For more information: Phone: 0116 257 3415 E-mail: marketing@lathams.co.uk or visit www.lathamtimber.co.uk The advanced composite technology provides superior resistance to UV, frost, stains and impacts when compared to traditional composite or wood decks. Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Richard Mosson, James Latham’s Group Cladding and Decking Manager commented, “As the popularity of WPC decking grows in the UK, customers are looking for a premium quality product that will deliver and UPM ProFi ticks all the boxes. “With 10 years of continued investment and R&D, the quality of the UPM ProFi deck range is exceptional. Long-life and ultralow maintenance has been engineered into the product plus, due to the innovative use of recycled materials – some of the range is made using up to 95% - it has won several international awards, with the product making a major contribution to reducing traditional landfill and incineration which is really important to James Latham as well as many of our customers.”

Wi-Q Technologies introduces the first cloud-based mobile ordering solution for hotel room guests Award-winning hospitality software developer, Wi-Q Technologies, has announced the launch of Mi-Room; the first cloud-based mobile ordering application designed to deliver integrated guest services from hotel room to poolside. Following the launch of Wi-Q in 2015, Mi-Room is Wi-Q Technologies’ second hospitality sector mobile ordering solution.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Unlike an app, guests can access Mi-Room in seconds and in under three key strokes via any internet-enabled mobile device, allowing them to use their own smartphones, tablets and laptops to order guest services from the comfort of their room or sunbed.

30

Features include a user-friendly interface, choice of language, allergy and dietary requirements and multiple payment options, including charge to room. Along with enhancing guests’ experience, Mi-Room provides a customisable platform to boost upsell opportunities, easily managed through a back-end system that facilitates real-time updates to menus, images, offers and pricing. Mi-Room can be implemented in less than two weeks from point of contract and thanks to a

little or no Capex SaaS model, hotels can experience an instant ROI. Graham Cornhill, founder and Managing Director of Wi-Q Technologies, explains how critical the solution will be for the hotel industry: “Less than two per cent of guests are ordering room service, and we believe it’s a huge missed revenue opportunity. Make it easy, fast and seamless and guests will engage. Imagine the difference even a two percent increase in in-room revenue could make to most hotels.”

Mi-Room has been fine-tuned by working closely with the hotel sector, industry experts and payment and EPOS providers, including Oracle Hospitality, which now enables Mi-Room integration with tens of thousands of hotels worldwide. Graham continued: “We have formed extensive global partnerships that ensure Mi-Room can seamlessly integrate with many hotels’ existing EPOS and property management systems so there are no limits to the introduction of revenue-boosting technology.”

Technology and the future of hospitality John Bowen, CEO MediaConcepts

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

As global hotel giants struggle to come to terms with the mobile revolution that is disrupting the hospitality industry, MediaConcepts is working with hotels across the globe to use mobile and tech innovations to transform their business, booking systems, websites, app portfolios and RevPAR forecasts using technological launches that are proven and available now.

32

“Technology is transforming the way hoteliers reach their customers the world over. And much of this change is being led by those customers and their changing digital habits. 46%* of millennials say they would choose to stay at a specific hotel if it allowed them check in on their smartphone. Increasingly that stat is true of older audiences and business travellers too. Technology is changing the way hoteliers do business and the opportunities are endless. From Japan’s first robot-run hotel to data driven

customer experience, technology is changing everything. Hoteliers are experts in hospitality – the product, the service, the experiences, welcoming and managing guests. Silicon Valley and dot.coms around the world are the experts in tech. At MediaConcepts we try to be experts in both, bridging the gap and enabling hoteliers to respond with knowledge and agility to the changing opportunities posed by tech launches and the digital world. I can’t think of a single industry sector that isn’t facing some kind of massive disruption due to technology, and the hospitality sector is no exception. However, the hospitality industry is unique in that the essence of digital media is the same as the essence of hospitality; both are about conversation, engagement, understanding and shared experience. Used emotively and intelligently,

technology and big data has the ability to add more hospitality to the hospitality industry - not take it away as some might fear. Customers expect to interact with suppliers in the same way they interact in their social life – there is no longer a distinction, it’s a bleisure outlook. For many guests travel revolves around smart phones. Priscilla, our mobile concierge, offers your guests the perfect hotel experience in the palm of their hand. This innovative new hotel app makes the future of mobile guest engagement a reality today. The smart app enables hotel guests to manage their entire customer journey on their smart phone. A more intuitive way for guests to access hotel information and services, Priscilla takes guests from check-in through to departure and helps hoteliers learn more about their guests and retain their business. From pre-arrival check-in, to ordering room service, requesting items from housekeeping, opening room doors and even controlling room lights, climate and entertainment, Priscilla can help guests personalise and control their stay and help hoteliers better understand the needs and habits of their customers.

Our latest launches are a Messenger Chat Bot, enabling bookings to hotels via chat bots such as Facebook Messenger; and a new voice tech booking system that enables users of the likes of Alexa and Google Home to check hotel’s rooms and prices and make recommendations through spoken commands. Both systems are brand new and enable hotels to stay connected and build their communications with clients that are moving away from the traditional channels and looking for brands to be available to them on their chosen tech device. Increasingly hospitality will become a data driven customer experience. We can help our hotels respond to this social and business change. In fact, there are a wealth of opportunities for hoteliers before you even begin to unravel the

opportunities in the new tech launches. A better understanding of data and the online customer journey would have a significant impact on every hotelier’s business. Data is key to everything we do. Understanding more about your customer not only helps to better understand what their needs are and develop products that support them, but to better target promotions and inventory to them, building loyalty in the process. Used emotively and intelligently, digital data will add more hospitality to your business as well as increasing RevPAR by offering a more efficient service and increasing customer loyalty. It’s an exciting time for the hospitality sector. Technology is changing the world and hoteliers need tech know-how and the agility to move on opportunities quickly – that’s where we can help. We can help hoteliers use technology to improve your customer journey and experience, and make the future stay of tomorrow a reality today.” www.mediaconcepts.com

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

And the growth of apps is just one small thread of a very dynamic digital tech industry. Instead of going to an app or website, guests may wish to make a booking through Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Alexa, Cortana, Skype, Google Home or one of the many other interfaces they interact with.

Let me entertain you... legally While the multitude of routes now available for a venue to play or stream music brings with it great choice - the flipside is that it has legal complexity. James Luck, commercial director for soundjack, reviews this legal maze and advises on the best way to avoid a hefty fine. The options to deliver entertainment today are not only widespread, they have become that much easier. All you have to do is pick your Spotify or iTunes playlist, press shuffle and away you go. No more need to purchase the latest CD collections, hire live bands or go to the expense of having a jukebox installed. Or so it would seem. The stark truth however, is that this supposedly simple “plug and play” solution could land you in very hot water, cost thousands of pounds in fines, damage your reputation and even end up with a prison term imposed.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Depending on whether you use Spotify or iTunes, the radio, TV, a jukebox, play CDs and even a live band there will be some form of licence required.

34

There are two types of licence, PPL and PRS for Music and the likelihood is you’ll require both. There have been some very high profile cases in recent years where publicans, club owners and even hairdressing salons have fallen foul. For example, in November 2015, the Socialite Bar, in Muswell Hill, North London, was fined by PPL to the tune of £19,000 and The House of Hair and Beauty, in Preston, had to cough up £1,500 for PPL in July 2010 and was banned from playing music. But you can avoid being the next high profile case. PPL collects and distributes money on behalf of record companies and performers while PRS for Music represents songwriters, composers and music publishers.

So, if you play any form of “original” music whatsoever to customers, then you probably need a licence. With soundjack, you are free to play tailored playlists with the peace of mind we ensure the licence that most venues miss - the copying licence - is covered in our charges. We work with you to make sure you have the right playlists and your customers are also able to influence track choice via a free app. There are some fantastic stats too, for instance:

• 93 per cent of bars believe playing the correct music creates a better atmosphere1.

• Music in bars increases sales by an average of 44 per cent2

• A massive 91% of managers either

“agreed” or “agreed strongly” playing music makes customers and staff happier3

And it’s not just bars and clubs that can benefit from fully licensed background music. Leightons Opticians & Hearing Care wanted something that would integrate easily with its existing audio system for a space that lacked atmosphere. Its success meant that the soundjack system was subsequently rolled out to all Leightons’ shops and IT engineer Daniel Barnes has said the system is “stable and user-friendly, which is what we needed in multiple stores”. So, while the process may seem complex and is indeed a legal maze, it need not. Hitting the right balance to provide background music for your customers does not only provide entertainment for staff and customers it can boost morale, bottom line and keep you out of court.

or many consumers, dogs are the new kids and as such owners are naturally extending their own lifestyle choices and demands to their four-legged friends. Therefore, it’s no surprise that dog-friendly travel is no longer just an interesting little niche. Having sent over 12,000 owners and 15,500 dogs on getaways since 2014, and with a net promoter score of 75, Europe’s number one pet friendly holiday bookers, PetsPyjamas, are leading the pack for an experience that keeps dog owners coming back for more. So for properties looking to enhance their dog-friendly experience or introduce it to their offering, PetsPyjamas is a one-stop for success. PetsPyjamas work closely with their partners to create experiences dog owners will love. All breaks are booked via their highly knowledgeable, dedicated pet concierge team, and each canine traveller receives a free personalised pet treat box at no extra cost to the partner to ensure the delight and surprise factor upon arrival. Drawing on their extensive pet accessories experience, PetsPyjamas also has a Travel Partner Shop offering competitively priced beds, bowls, towels, blankets, pet bins and more, with many items available for personalisation. The most wanted item is the Pet Essentials Kit (£24.95 for a pack of 5) – a mini welcome kit featuring a travel bowl, toy, treats and shampoo, which is now the new standard in-room complimentary item that dog friendly properties can offer their canine clientele. Generating success for hotels, each partner is provided with their own vibrant listing page free of charge, with a fee on booking commission structure. PetsPyjamas maximises traffic with its highly engaged customers of 200K+ via regular e-shots, PPC campaigns, a fully SEO optimised site and social advertising. Raising brand awareness, they also run an annual dog-friendly travel awards with prestigious ambassadors, and have a strategic partnership with Eurotunnel to attract overseas guests. Be more dog-friendly with the Pet Experts at Petspyjamas.com/about/partner

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Shifting the experience from merely dogtolerant to truly dog-friendly, PetsPyjamas recognises that a warm welcome for a customer’s dog is how the travel and hospitality industry can entice, maximise and retain the lucrative hound pound. PetsPyjamas CEO Gracia Amico says: “Pet owners are willing to stretch their budget a little further if it means their dog can come too. If taking a break, customers travelling with pets tend to drink and dine on site throughout their stay because their pet can be by their side, or close by in their room, which in turn drives up a higher spend per guest.”

Interior Design & Refurbishment

Peppermill interiors Family-run furniture supplier Peppermill Interiors has launched a range of new products this year, just in time for summer refurbs! Originally established as Peppermill Antiques over two decades ago, the company has changed its focus in recent years – moving away from antiques – and has recently undergone a rebrand. Now, the more aptly-named Peppermill Interiors is a go-to place for contemporary furniture and unique vintage pieces, selling a huge range of products to both domestic and commercial clients all over the world.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Peppermill supplies furniture to several high-profile customers, with Starbucks, Marriott Hotels, Nando’s and Harrods being among its list of clients. As well as chains and big-name companies, Peppermill also supplies furniture to a huge number of independent hotels, bars and pubs, and countless domestic clients, who return time and time again.

36

The company has been at its new premises in Staffordshire for over a year now, and the larger space has allowed Peppermill to suitably showcase its ever-expanding range of products. However, it is still a work in progress according to director Scott Humphreys: “We’ve still got a lot of exciting ideas to put into practice in our showroom. We’re currently building room sets, which will hopefully help our clients to envisage how our furniture can fit into their interiors, and we’re always thinking of fresh new ways to exhibit our stock and keep people engaged.” 2017 has already been an exceptionally busy year for the company, as it has seen over 50 new product launches in the first quarter alone. The new lines include a fresh selection of bar stools, dining tables and armchairs, as well as brand-new ventures for Peppermill, including a new collection of leather sofas and a fantastic range of outdoor furniture.

Scott Humphreys said: “Outdoor furniture is something we haven’t really stocked much of in the past, except for a few galvanised tables and chairs here and there. We’re really excited about this new line of furniture. Now is the key time for bars, pubs, cafes and hotels to be thinking about remodelling their outdoor seating areas for summer, so this range has arrived just in time for venue owners to take advantage of it.” A large on-site warehouse allows most reproduction items to be kept in stock in large quantities, which ensures a quick turnaround and creates shorter lead times for customers – something the company takes great pride in. You can see the full collection of new, vintage and bespoke furniture across two floors at Peppermill Interiors’ large showroom in Burntwood, Staffordshire. The showroom is open to the public six days a week: Monday-Friday 9am-5.30pm and Saturday 10am-5pm. See the latest arrivals at www.peppermillinteriors.com or subscribe to the mailing list for news and updates.

What links prestige hotels such as the Park Plaza at Westminster Bridge, the Renaissance Harbour View Hotel in Hong Kong, the Burj al Arab in Dubai, the majestic St Pancras Hotel and luxury boutique hotels Blakes and The Kensington in London? They all have incorporated demista™ heated mirror pads in their bathrooms. This additional luxury of having steam free mirrors in the stylish new bathrooms, allows guests to shave, do hair and makeup, with an unspoilt, clear view, at all times. Steamed up mirrors are not just a Northern Hemisphere problem! An order for 87 demista™ heated mirror pads has been placed by Clearlight Designs in Australia, a company who specialises in frosted glass and lighted mirrors for bathrooms.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The 87 mirrors were custom made by the Australian manufacturer for the Horizon Club rooms Shangri-la Hotel, The Rocks, Sydney Australia and were fitted with demista™ pads.

38

Whether your style is to bomb down the black runs, or tentatively glide down the novice slopes, before downing your après ski hot toddy, you need that hot bath or shower. Moving to colder climates, the Hotel Cheval Blanc at Courcheval have installed demista™ heated mirror pads in their bathrooms to ensure the guests have a clear view in the bathroom mirror. If you are heading for the Northern Hemisphere or Southern, when staying at the Marriott Heathrow over 350 demista™ heated mirror pads have been installed in their bathrooms ensuring that arriving or departing passengers have a steam free view at all times.

Now accepted as the norm, rather than a novel addition in hotel bathrooms around the world, the heated mirror pad has cleared the view for guests for nearly three decades. This innovative product was introduced by Ruth & David Perl more than 26 years ago and the range of sizes and shapes now offered has continued to grow ensuring that all mirrors can be kept steam free. Often the first choice for designers, architects, interior designers and specifiers, demista™ has become an integral part of the bathroom. Custom made options are available for more bespoke sizes. The pads can also be incorporated in to vanity units and bathroom cabinets. Hotels, new luxury developments and leisure centres in the UK, Europe, Middle East, Far East and Australia have all benefitted from installing the heated mirror pads and the brand is now recognised as the leader in this market. Interior Design & Refurbishment Architextural, part of William Smith, is excited to announce the launch of 3M’s DI-NOC Trend Line range - a new core stock of the most popular and on-trend wood grain, metallic, textile and single colour patterns. As of April, the Company have had in stock all 80 patterns of the Trend Line range, with customers able to order by the metre and for next day delivery. New Trend Line swatches are available for customers to view the array of patterns in a physical form. The Trend Line range is regarded as another bold statement from the UK’s leading supplier to the sign and graphics industry, as it signals its commitment to investing in new architectural product ranges. Off the back of the launch, Architextural is also offering DI-NOC application training, enabling customers to learn how to apply the film and become an installer themselves. “We believe DI-NOC is a pioneering product, within a lucrative market,” said Architextural’s Marketing Manager, Lindsay Appleton. “The refurbishment market shows great growth potential, with refurbishment generally 1/7 of the cost compared to making it new, which can provide endless opportunities to businesses. “As a result of launching the 3M Trend Line range, the key DI-NOC patterns will be a lot more accessible and readily available to supply new projects. By investing in stock, we can ensure there are no longer issues with supply times and the entire Trend Line range is available by the metre.” Developed by 3M as a cost-effective design solution for interior and exterior new building refurbishment projects, these vinyl films realistically recreate the visual effect of natural materials at a fraction of the cost - DI-NOC Architectural Finishes offer a number of key benefits.

3M DI-NOC Trend Line range launch signals greater product choice from Architextural

Lightweight and self-adhesive, they can be applied on site to existing substrates quickly and easily, with less likelihood of error and waste. Businesses can remain open during the DI-NOC application, in turn minimising disruption during a refurbishment. 3M DI-NOC films come with CE marking and EN 13501 fire certification to give customers peace of mind.

Valdivian Furniture

for Hotelier & Hospitality Interview with Liam O’Donnell

1. When did Valdivian Furniture begin? After trading in the hospitality furniture industry as a family business, it came to our awareness that we weren’t truly marketing ourselves for what we were: British made furniture specialists that maintained an unrivalled commitment to the environment. We made the decision to rebrand with our core values as part of our message and Valdivian Furniture was born – a name derived from an ecoregion on the west coast of South America in Chile and Argentina.

2. What makes Valdivian unique from its competitors?

Valdivian Furniture has a unique selling point that distinguishes it from other hospitality furniture businesses, with the ability to undertake large scale projects with incomparable quality finishes whilst still maintaining personable service from a family-run company. Each client gets a truly unique experience with visibility and communication through all stages of design, manufacturing and fitting. Moreover, with more businesses looking to become more sustainable and implementing corporate social responsibility schemes, our environmental initiatives can fulfil these needs.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

All of our woods are carefully sourced from sustainable forests and will always be FSC or PEFC certified.

40

3. What is your most popular range at Valdivian? We offer an extensive product portfolio, alongside various raw products that we buy in for finishing in addition to manufacturing our own.

4. What would you say is Valdivian’s most impressive project to date?

The Antipodea restaurant is a true mark of our craftsmanship and creative talents here at Valdivian. Each bespoke piece of furniture in the brasserie was carefully crafted in-house with the upmost quality and attention to detail. We worked closely with the project designers to develop the bespoke pieces that complement the space, with the mixture of natural woods and materials being specifically chosen to capture a natural aesthetic. For us, the Antipodea project really tested our ability as a manufacturer, but in a positive way.

5. What does the future hold for Valdivian Furniture? Having just expanded our office premises and taken on new staff, we now have the ability to start working on new projects and ranges. We are currently working on new furniture ranges that we hope to launch by the end of the year, so there are lots of exciting new pieces and designs in store! Valdivian Furniture is also proudly exhibiting at The Independent Hotel Show at the Olympia in Kensington this October having recently descended into the hotel sector and we endeavour to display our new manufactured ranges there. About Liam O’Donnell: Liam is the director of Valdivian Furniture and is driving growth through expanding their collections, working on new designs and the strategic management of employees. Liam has deep rooted personal interest in environmental issues and over 16 years of experience in manufacturing furniture.

Our greatest asset is our ability to manufacture bespoke pieces to the exact design requirements of the client, demonstrating our flexibility as a company.

He is a highly experienced wood machinist and specialist joiner which translates into the company’s meticulous and careful approach to furniture production.

Our latest bestselling ranges are The Savannah, Albertine and Malayan.

Designing your bar Some points to remember when designing your bar;

premanufactured in our workshops as much as possible, this means that once on site a bar can often be installed in just a day or two, keeping your business as operational as possible.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

When it comes to bar design, everyone has different tastes, but finding the right look and layout that works for you is important.

42

This is why George Thomas Joinery will spend time with you, working out what you require and how you want it to look, but probably more importantly we consider how the bar will work for your everyday business. All too often function is forgotten to aesthetics. The key to good bar design is having everything to hand for each bartender, this is even more important if space behind the bar is limited, the last thing you need is bartenders walking behind and into each other all the time, it only takes a few broken

glasses to start eating into your profits. Once you have considered all of these factors, then how the bar will look comes next and that’s where George Thomas Joinery can also help. Our experience of wood and its finishes, various solid surface materials, coupled with the ability to create unique textures and patterns, combined with hidden lighting, are all techniques we can employ to give your bar the truly unique look. All of our bars and counters are

We operate from a 14,500 sqft workshop impressively equipped with some of the latest woodworking machinery, including CNC and edge banding machines. Handily located in the Midlands we operate throughout the UK. We welcome potential customers to visit our workshops and to see us at work for themselves. George Thomas Joinery can design and manufacture everything from bespoke one-off joinery items to high quality repeat pieces. George Thomas Joinery Tel: 01384 637 825 reception@gtjs.co.uk www.lk2.co.uk

For a busy bar, a dedicated till per bartender is ideal, then they aren’t waiting to type in drinks and take payment.

Create drink preparation stations with all the tools in one place, this includes the soda tap.

Consider where the sink and if required the washing station might go, include a strainer to catch the fruit, umbrellas, etc, but ideally these are away from the main area of serving drinks.

A rubbish collection area, you might need to allow for separation of glass here.

Beer taps, located so they don’t obscure the customers from the bartenders.

Glass storage, overhead or behind?

Wine bottle and sprit storage might need considering as well as the dispensing of the spirits, optics or a set location for the common spirits if poured.

Bar tops, wood is more forgiving that stone, but use hardwoods for longevity, while Corian is antibacterial and hygienic.

If you have waiters, then a dedicated service area of the bar is useful, if only for the return of dirty glasses.

Don’t forget the plumbing, cabling and electrics as well as lighting.

TREAT YOUR GUESTS THIS SUMMER

In football, guests will look forward to cheering on the Home Nations in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in June. International sport ignites a passion like no other and what better place for guests to soak up the atmosphere than in their hotel bar. In Rugby Union, The British & Irish Lions Tour kicks off in June exclusively live on Sky Sports. Taking place only once every four years, the tour should prove to be a massive event for rugby fans. The first Test of the 2013 competition attracted approximately 900,000 out of home viewers into venues across the country and this year, Sky Sports will bring bars all the action. The Lions Tour gives hoteliers the chance to extend traditional operating hours with breakfast offers to attract both business and leisure travellers into the bar early.

Strategy & Commercial Director at Sky Business Damian Saunders said: “Sky Sports continues to deliver the biggest international sporting events and hoteliers can look forward to a packed 2017 of quality action to keep guests entertained. With some huge events lined up this summer including the exclusive live coverage of the British and Irish Lions rugby tour to New Zealand, coverage of all Home Nations football games in the June World Cup Qualifiers, and exclusive coverage of the British Open golf championship, there’s plenty of opportunities for hoteliers to get both guests and visitors through their doors”.

There’s lots of exciting British cricket action happening in summer 2017. The ICC Champions Trophy will take place on English and Welsh soil as the top 8 teams battle it out to reign supreme in one day cricket. In Test cricket, England host South Africa in a much-anticipated series.

Golf fans will be excited about the upcoming Open championship at Royal Birkdale, exclusively live on Sky Sports. Over four days, viewers will be able to catch all the action in the hotel bar as players such as Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose all attempt to take the title of Britain’s most famous golf competition.

Motor-racing fans from across the globe will be eager to see how this year’s Formula 1® season is shaping up and hoteliers can keep their guests happy by showing every race weekend live and uninterrupted, including the British Grand Prix from July 14-16.

Plus there is much more happening this summer including darts and tennis to encourage guests to stay in the hotel longer and spending more instead of venturing outside the hotel for entertainment.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Hotel bars with Sky Sports can look forward to a huge summer of action in 2017 including some of the world’s most exciting sporting events, which will present hoteliers with plenty of opportunity to drive revenue and encourage guests into their bars. Research shows that more than 60% of hotel guests aged between 18 to 34 believe it’s important that Sky is available in the bar and when watching Sky TV in the hotel bar will spend more than bar visits without Sky.

We are always delighted to hear that exhibitors have had a successful show and buyers have found what they were looking for – and we always hear that.” Adding to the simple choice of attending the show is the venue itself. Located in the centre of this lively city, Manchester Central offers modern exhibition facilities in a cleverly remodelled Victorian rail station and is surrounded by swanky bars and restaurants. With easy access by road and rail, getting there couldn’t be simpler. Commercial Kitchen up for two best trade show awards

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

With just over three weeks to go until doors open for its second edition, Commercial Kitchen has been shortlisted for ‘Best Trade Launch Show’ and ‘Best Tradeshow under 2,000sqm’ by the Association of Event Organisers, in its hotly contested annual Excellence Awards. The first dedicated trade show for the UK’s entire commercial kitchen industry, Commercial Kitchen is now one of only a few events to ever have been shortlisted by the AEO as a finalist in both these categories (Diversified UK’s Casual Dining show also enjoyed the honour in 2014).

48

The exhibition industry’s equivalent to the Oscars, the double award nomination reflects the show’s highlyfocused appeal. The 2016 event welcomed over 1,700 attendees,

including many of the biggest catering equipment purchasers and specifiers from across the foodservice sector. Attracting the right quality of visitor was key to the show’s success. Resulting in glowing testimonials from exhibitors and visitors alike. Now, with visitor pre-registrations tracking ahead for 2017 and exhibition space almost soldout, it’s hoping to score top marks with the AEO Awards judges too. “We’re absolutely delighted to be nominated for these prestigious awards, ahead of the show’s second edition next month. It really is a wonderful endorsement for the show,” says group event director Chris Brazier. “It’s also a great recognition of the impact that Commercial Kitchen has made within the industry in just its first

year. We’re excited to be able to share this nomination with our innovative exhibitors, association and media partners, and all the incredible end users, distributors, project houses and consultants that will be attending the show on 6-7 June at NEC. Commercial Kitchen is the ideal show to visit, whether it’s to sense check your kitchen equipment against other brands or to find new suppliers of equipment to suit your kitchen needs. It’s a must attend,” says Chris Knights, group executive chef at Young’s Pubs and Geronimo Inns. Commercial Kitchen returns to the NEC Birmingham on 6-7 June. Show features include a free two-day seminar programme, the Innovation Challenge Awards, and CEDA Awards Gallery. The annual AEO Excellence Awards recognises achievements by organisers, venues, suppliers and contractors across the exhibitions industry. This year’s winners are to be announced at a dedicated awards ceremony at Grosvenor House, Park Lane, in London on 16 June. Diversified UK’s Casual Dining show, is looking to add to its AEO trophies[1], having been shortlisted for ‘Best UK Tradeshow over 2,000sqm, while Nordic Organic Food Fair, which takes place in Malmö, Sweden (co–located with Natural Products Scandinavia) is shortlisted for ‘Best Overseas Tradeshow over 2000sqm’.

Forever Better’ with Miele Professional. Miele Professional is the global leader of commercial laundry equipment and dishwashers, providing the highest quality products designed to deliver exceptional results every day. Renowned for their outstanding build quality, innovative technology and energy efficient performance, Miele prides itself on its attention to detail.

The Synergy Grill is a pioneering chargrill that uses 52% less gas. This gas saving equates to an average of £12,238 every five years, helping cultivate a carbon neutral kitchen. It also uniquely has no fat tray to clean. These benefits have been adopted by top chefs and snagged top prize for innovation at The Commercial Kitchen Show where the judges were “Wowed by a British-made design that is a true innovation for chargrilling.”

The greatest benefit, however, is flavour. Synergy Grills get hotter than average chargrills. Heat ‘atomises’ the natural fats that are released during cooking which are misted back into food making it incredibly succulent.
