DerbySoft announces “One”

- targeting European hoteliers

D

erbySoft, the trusted hotel business technology provider, today announces “One”, an easy-to-use online distribution management platform as part of European expansion efforts. The “One” platform is the first to offer Single Sign On (SSO) access to a variety of connected modules including: a Content Management System, website builder and internet booking engine, a fully integrated channel manager, and a metasearch manager solution. It has been created to simplify operations and reduce the distribution costs for independent and small to mid-size hotel groups. Ahead of the general launch later this year, DerbySoft is offering early access to “One” for a limited number of businesses as part of the company’s Learning Launch. For these smaller businesses, online distribution is especially challenging due to comparatively few financial and technical resources. As an innovative, simple and affordable tool, “One by DerbySoft” is built to tackle this and help users manage their online distribution in a quick and easy manner, across multiple reservation websites and channels. Timesaving is a crucial element of “One” and it is the only solution that offers a Content Management System that automatically populates all of the hotel’s static information within the connected modules of “One”.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

“Not only will One help to drive more bookings, thanks to the soon to be released meta search tool, but we will also give back time for the user to focus on their guests rather than sitting in front of a computer struggling to navigate the distribution world. After all, the One user may only be a team of one and so this is a tool for them - easy-to-use, yet incredibly powerful”, André Baljeu says, Vice President at DerbySoft.

6

To give hotel managers, online marketing managers and owners a better understanding of what “One” can do, interested parties can join the company’s Learning Launch, open now to a limited number of hotels for a short period. By registering at www.dsone.com users can test each of the available modules and discover the simplicity of the platform and how it integrates with overall hotel management. With offices in Dallas and Shanghai, DerbySoft is also announcing an expansion to Europe with a permanent European residence opening in Germany next year.

Over the past 15 years DerbySoft has been offering individual solutions to global hotel groups such as Marriott, Hilton, and InterContinental Hotel Group and this continues to be the case across Europe. At the latest count, DerbySoft enables over five million room nights every month across 80,000 hotels worldwide. With the establishment of a European office in Germany, DerbySoft is aiming to build on their success and focus on key markets such as Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, UK, and Spain. According to an extensive study by Phocuswright and h2c, the projected gross online bookings for the independent lodging market in Europe are expected to reach €1.5 billion by 2017 as both supplier direct and online travel agency (OTA) bookings swell. The same report found that Independents control an estimated 67% of room supply, and of these, 72% consider direct web to be their most effective distribution channel. Andre Baljeu says, “We have acquired a strong market position with large international hotel chains who are convinced of our solutions. Now we want to expand that position to important European locations, addressing independent hotels and small hotel groups in particular to support them with their online distribution demands”.

“One by DerbySoft” will be widely released to all by the end of 2016. More information can be found here - www.derbysoft.com/one

Brooklyn Brewery joins Carlsberg UK’s House of Beers Leading US brewer Brooklyn Brewery is moving its UK distribution to Carlsberg UK from the start of 2017, after 15 years with James Clay. Brooklyn’s well-respected portfolio includes renowned beers such as its Brooklyn Lager, the modern classic Sorachi Ace, and seasonals such as its Summer Ale, and its range will become part of Carlsberg’s recently launched House of Beers division, joining a small number of premium brands including Sweden’s Backyard Brewery, Belgium’s Grimbergen and Herefordshire’s Bad Apple cider.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The House of Beers is designed to provide specialist support to premium, independent free trade outlets in major cities throughout the UK. Carlsberg already distributes Brooklyn Brewery’s beers in over a dozen European markets, and the pair have opened two microbreweries in the last couple of years, New Carnegie in Sweden, and Dahls in Norway. ‘We would like to thank everyone at James Clay for the great work they have done to build Brooklyn to this point in the UK’, said Eric Ottaway, the brewery’s CEO. ‘After recently moving into a new facility in the North of England and acquiring the wholesale arm of Londonbased beer distributor Utobeer, this transfer allows us the resources to invest and support expansion from our existing and potential new brewery partners from across the world,’ said James Clay.

Molson Coors launches Brew+Press Beer & Cider Collective

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Brew+Press, the Molson Coors collective of beer sommeliers, seasoned bartenders and marketing pros charged with bringing Molson’s premium brands to life, made its debut on Tuesday this week in lively fashion in London’s Shoreditch.

10

The event showcased experiences such as Beer Confessionals and Flavour Pong, created to engage customers’ interest, alongside food matches curated by beer sommelier Ed Hughes, and a cider cocktail bar hosted by new team member, Drinksmith’s James York Pryce.

Blue Moon and Franciscan Well, with the prospect of other ‘craft’ brands being added as and when further breweries or cideries are acquired. ‘We want to bring the brands to life. We want to be giving consumers something a bit different,’ said Cozens.

Molson Coors’ acquisition of breweries and cideries such as Sharp’s and Rekorderlig had shown the power of teams with ‘a real passion and talent for talking to the consumer’, Martyn Cozens, UK independent on-premise sales director told Imbibe.

Expect more opportunities for meetthe-brewer sessions for staff and consumers, plus more food matching training sessions. ‘Food matching is one of the reasons for the group’s creation,’ said Martin Coyle, Molson Coors’ UK marketing director.

Initially targeting London, the plan is to roll Brew+Press out to major cities around the UK over the next two to three years.

While Molson Coors itself already has five qualified beer sommeliers on staff, Hughes is ambitious. ‘I want the whole team to gain the qualification,’ he said.

Sharp’s and Rekorderlig sit at the heart of the beer and cider collective, along with producers such as Staropramen,

‘Beer is subjective, just as music is,’ said Coyle, explaining the approach taken with some of the experiences

on offer, designed both to challenge preconceptions as well as to engage consumers. One such activity on show was Flavour Pong, a variant on Sharp’s Beer Pong game. Styles of beer come under scrutiny, rather than specific beers, explained Brew+Press’ Alan Carroll. ‘It’s about bringing the fun back into beer,’ said Carroll, as he described opportunities for host outlets to follow up the games with an offer of a free halfpint of the contestant’s favourite beer, or to head into food matching territory. Meanwhile, over at the the Brew+Press bar, Pryce rustled up a number of Rekorderlig cocktails, highlighting the opportunities to upsell cider while recognising that simple serves are as valid as complex creations. ‘These [recipes]are just stepping stones,’ he said.

LATEST NAME BRINGS GERMAN FLAVOUR TO JFS Exhibiting for the first time at the January Furniture Show - and the very first time at the Birmingham NEC - is family owned German company, Gwinner. It is the latest leading brand from across the globe to sign up for the UK’s number one furniture and furnishings event which runs over four days from Sunday 22 to Wednesday 25 January across halls 1 to 5 at the NEC.

“It is for this reason that we decided to exhibit, for the first time, at the new NEC show, which now has a much better format,” said Tim Robinson, UK agent for Gwinner. “While we do exhibit at many other locations we understand that not all UK retailers are able to visit shows abroad. It is important that we get to showcase our new and innovative designs where retailers are visiting and the January Furniture Show is an obvious choice for us in 2017.”

If you want to see the best of the best in furniture and furnishings, then the January Furniture Show is the place to be. Taking place at the Birmingham NEC (Sunday 22- Wednesday 25 January 2017), the four day trade exhibition is where anyone who is anyone in the furniture and furnishing industry gets together. Some of the UK’s top furniture brands – specialising in the hotel, restaurant and contract markets – will be exhibiting their designs, products and innovations for commercial buyers and specifiers who are interested in sourcing furniture for the contract and interior design markets. Continuing support for the show comes from right across the furnishings industry, which prompted organisers to expand stand space across the five halls for 2017. So far, there are over 300 confirmed exhibitors including Breasley, Ultra, Cintinque, Parker Knoll, Duresta, G Plan Cabinet, Ercol, Heartlands, Buoyant and Vogue Beds. Here’s a sneak insight in to some of their thoughts on changes and trends for 2017:

JANUARY FURNITURE SHOW Accommodates the Best of the Best

British furniture designer Ercol, has been producing quality furniture for 95 years, and for 2017 will bring products that are synonymous with quality and offering timeless, pared down design combined with excellent functionality. Said Ercol md, Nick Garratt: “The key industry theme moving into next year will be the weakness of sterling and increased factory input prices putting pressure on margins. This is likely to feed through to selling prices. “Ercol will be stepping up the rate of new design and new product introduction and we are working on a range of new themes for next year.” According to Britain’s largest upholstery manufacturer, Buoyant, one of the biggest changes in the industry is consumer demands. The company says consumers’ have massively increased expectations of better value for money, shorter lead times and more choice. Accommodating these demands, Buoyant will be showcasing its innovative designs at the show in a multitude of sizes and shapes alongside storage, beds and motion. Its fabric offer has become increasingly complex. As the Parker Knoll brand continues to grow, it remains committed to designing and developing collections in line with the changing market place and latest trends – whilst providing the ultimate in comfort. At the 2017 January Furniture Show, it will be launching a brand new collection honing in on its commitment to continuous innovation, and market leading design. CORAVIN ™ LAUNCHES MOST MODEL ONE- THE MOST ACCESSIBLE MODEL YET Creators of revolutionary wine system make wine by the glass more accessible then ever before

C

reators of innovative wine system, Coravin Europe B.V., today launched the all-new Coravin Model One wine system. The brand new system retails at £199, making it the most competitively priced in the brand portfolio.

Using groundbreaking technology, Coravin keeps the cork in place, whilst the accompanying gas capsule inserts inert argon gas into the bottle. The pressure of the argon pushes the wine through the needle, whilst preventing any oxygen from entering the bottle. The new technology includes a user-friendly, approachable design at an accessible price point. This will enable both new and experienced wine lovers alike to effortlessly pour wine without removing the cork, allowing them to enjoy a glass of wine without committing to the whole bottle. The launch accompanies the recent Haygarth report* on wine consumption in the UK. The report revealed that more than a third (35%) of millennials surveyed had chosen their most recent drink purely to try something new, and more than half (54%) said they regularly have three or more different types of drink a week. The results have revealed younger wine lovers have varied tastes in wine, enjoying the exploration of various regions and styles. Maarten Dekker, General Manager of Coravin Europe B.V. commented on the research: “Coravin can give them the freedom to drink what they want, when they want – without compromise and without waste. The Coravin Model One is the perfect system to enable exploration and cultivate a lifelong passion for wine.”

Renovation & Design

A touch of the luxurious and modern design in the pulsating center of Lithuania

The newly renovated Holiday Inn in Vilnius hi-tech meets extreme comfort and innovative design, thanks to the modern elegance of DuPont™ Corian® In the heart of Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital, tourists and business travelers at the end of a busy day will be able to rest their limbs in an environment of total comfort and high design. Choosing a fresh look for the renovation of its guest rooms, the Holiday Inn hotel selected the refinement of DuPont™ Corian® high-tech material for the vertical and horizontal surfaces in the majority of their renovated rooms. The Holiday Inn of Vilnius is part of the famous Intercontinental Hotel Groups chain, which has an extensive network of hotels worldwide, suitable for every travel purpose and target, from families to business travelers. The historic city of Vilnius attracts tourists both for its architectural beauty and for its business centre: each year, in fact, conferences, conventions, seminars and incentive travel target what has emerged as a modern, “can’t miss” European destination. For this reason, Holiday Inn - located in the business district of the capital, ten minutes away from the historic city center - wanted to offer its guests a memorable stay. Project management for the renovation of 134 top class rooms was entrusted to Fulvio Cancelli from the company Spekas Ir Ko. The interior design concept was conceived by Arches architectural studio and the fabrication of DuPont™ Corian® material was carried out by the company Gforma.

Based on a connected floating furniture system, DuPont™ Corian® is used for most of the interior design furnishing solutions in the guest rooms – from the bed base and backboard to the table and the round partition/shower; project by Arches; photo courtesy of Holiday Inn, all rights reserved.

The project’s central focus clearly pivots on a creative use of light combined with the translucency of DuPont™ Corian® techno-surface, as well as on a design that appears to seamlessly extend from the living into the bath areas in each room. Fulvio Cancelli affirms, “The idea started about a year ago. We wanted a design that would distinguish the hotel in the minds of our guests, and that would ideally tie together the various decor elements from the living and bath areas into a continuous flow.” For this purpose, the architects designed rooms where the purity of DuPont™ Corian® techno-surface and its feeling of warmth are the common thread between the bedroom, the bathroom and the living room furniture. The new bedrooms are in fact equipped with a bed backboard made in DuPont™ Corian®, which frames twin beds that seem suspended. They have been installed with a sliding mechanism so that the beds can be joined easily for a double bed, or remain separate for twin beds. The base of the bed, also in DuPont™ Corian®, is joined seamlessly to the desk beside the bed.

Mr. Geert Snaet, Holiday Inn general manager, comments about the choice to improve a hotel already renowned for its hospitality, “Our idea was to create a room that stands out and we knew we had to take some risk. Most Holiday Inn clients do not remember their room, but the renovated rooms are daring and our clients are giving us an overwhelming positive response. The use of DuPont™ Corian® has helped us to create a sexy business executive room that plays with light.”

Renovation & Design The bathroom is characterized by an eye-catching shower that acts as a partition between the bedroom and bathroom areas, and is made with two different thicknesses of DuPont™ Corian®, in the ultratranslucent Glacier Ice color. When the shower LED light is on, the light filters through the thinner band accents, and when showering, a suggestive illumination diffuses into the neighboring room that includes the shadowed silhouette of the person within. Also the vanity and shelves are made with Corian®, giving a very harmonic feel to the overall design concept and ensuring a top quality furnishing solution based on the material’s versatility, reliability and level of hygiene provided. In addition to these innovative and compellingly unique characteristics, other distinguishing points of the project have been the sheer amount of DuPont™ Corian® used and the relatively brief time taken to complete the design, both records. Jurgis Garmus, one of the owners of Gforma UAB, says, “Holiday Inn represents one of our most successful projects, but also one of our most challenging because of short deadlines and the immense quantity of DuPont™ Corian® used. An interesting technical feature of the fabrication is that two separate thicknesses of DuPont™ Corian® were used (6 and 12 mm) for the construction of the shower columns.” The hotel never closed, so the work schedules were intensive and had to be completed in short time frames, about 6 weeks, to ensure hotel guest comfort and uninterrupted operations.

Architect Edgaras Neniskis, one of the owners at Arches architectural studio explains about the design concept, “When we were commissioned to carry out the refurbishment of the Holiday Inn hotel in Vilnius, we aimed to create interiors that should be comfortable but rational because it is particularly a business hotel. Each room is organized as a single space in which the private environment for the bathroom is set by translucent partitions. The design is based on a contemporary, modern look and a connected floating furniture system made from an apparently single piece of DuPont™ Corian®. Thanks to the extreme versatility of this material, we could use it to create the bathroom furnishings, unifying them to the table in the room and the bed.”

The many benefits of DuPont™ Corian®, of particular value to the hospitality sector, have led to the use of this high-tech material for years by architects and designers around the world; interior renovations grand and small are improved by the long-lasting functional design solutions available with DuPont™ Corian®. It is easy to clean, ensuring the highest levels of hygiene to guests and reduced cleaning times for hotel staff. Its ultra-versatility enables the creation of personalized shapes for unique creative interior designs that are beautiful and pleasantly warm to the touch for an unforgettable sensorial experience. Hotelier & Hospitality Design

“We applied the same concept of a unified furniture system made with DuPont™ Corian® high tech material also in the living room area, creating sculptural yet functional furnishings and using the translucency of the material that allowed elegant effects when illuminated. We appreciated Corian® because it is a very flexible material that perfectly suited our philosophy for this project,” concluded Edgaras Neniskis.

The first commercial building in the UK to adopt this exciting application for the renowned DuPont advanced surface, the structure presents a sparkling new face to the heart of the financial district, set within the historic Minories neighbourhood.

22

Offering a welcome new four star facility to the area, the latest Motel One operation hosts 291 bedrooms and is now open for business. The building comprises two forms: a seven storey “decorative cube” fronting the street and a sixteen storey glass tower to the rear. Designed by Mackay + Partners for developers Endurance Land & Scottish Widows Investment Partnership, it brings a bright and a fresh new identity and a directional aesthetic vision to the area. The concept enjoyed full support from the City of London planning department who were happy to explore the choice of DuPont™ Corian® as the exterior cladding material, as opposed to the more typical specifications of steel, glass or stone.

“The design is entirely contemporary, yet fully responsive to its current and known future context,” says Ken Mackay of Mackay + Partners, “I have specified DuPont™ Corian® for other applications and so I am well aware of its properties, but the choice of Corian® to clad this project came about through extensive research and working very closely with DuPont.” This elegant exterior skin for the new building functions both as a sustainable open-jointed rain screen façade and also as a distinctive design feature. The eye-catching cladding, made from DuPont™ Corian® in a translucent white, presents a pure and simple finish during daylight hours, but at night, backlit designs within certain panels illuminate the structure to dramatic effect. The LED lighting system is on a colour wheel that can be changed via computer controlled dimming and the patterns and hues chosen reflect the Motel One brand. This combination of rain screen cladding with LED lighting is a first for London, according to the architects. The exterior cladding was created using approximately 1000 square metres of DuPont™ Corian® high-tech surface in a 12mm thickness and by exploiting the brand’s unique 1500mm width sheet to reduce the necessity for additional joints. The facade system was installed by specialists Silverside Trading of Shoreham-bySea in Sussex.

Renovation & Design Mackay + Partners ensured a high standard of sustainability in all aspects of the development, which has achieved a BREEAM excellent energy rating. Key to this was the design of a façade with excellent thermal performance (and just 35% glazing) plus the specification of heat recovery systems and green roofs to further enhance efficiency and mitigate rainwater run-off. Gwyn Richards of the City of London comments: “The building’s vibrant and playful facades demonstrate that new hotel buildings need not have bland, monotonous and repetitive facades. The ground-breaking use of DuPont™ Corian® as a facing material is innovative and convincing, both during the day and also when illuminated at night. The building demonstrates the importance of an ingenious architectural approach being carried through to implementation, in terms of the integrity of the original architectural concept, but also the highest quality of detailing and materials. The building sits comfortably within its surroundings whilst creating a highly compelling work of contemporary architecture which can be proud of its place in the City’s dynamic architectural character.” Mark Hill, Country Manager of DuPont™ Corian® for UK and Ireland, says: “The possibilities for the application of DuPont™ Corian® to facades are fascinating and full of possibility. We are totally committed to working with the

industry to explore what can be accomplished in design terms, while ensuring beneficial functionality and long lasting performance. The results achieved with the Motel One project by Mackay + Partners are not only a first for the UK but also a beacon for adventurous and inspiring building design.” DuPont™ Corian® is proving to be a valuable solution for façade applications in many ways, from design versatility to long term functionality. Completely homogenous and nonporous, it is easy to clean and maintain. It is also fire rated, resistant to graffiti, UV and climatic conditions – and should any damage occur – the material is repairable. DuPont™ Corian® is compatible with a ‘secret’ fix undercut anchor system and its lightweight, workable properties are a further benefit to both fabrication and installation. DuPont™ Corian® also offers the broadest range of international certification for facade applications among solid surfaces and has passed a series of fundamental tests for its application to the exterior of buildings. These include freeze/thaw cycling resistance, standards proving the material’s resistance to exterior environmental substances, fire performance tests, and tests for abuse resistance. Further information and certificates are available on request from DuPont. To know more, and stay in touch with DuPont™ Corian® www.corian.co.uk / www.endlessevolution.corian.com

JUMBY BAY

A ROSEWOOD RESORT TO DEBUT NEW ESTATE HOUSE BAR AND RESTAURANT FOLLOWING £4 MILLION RESTORATION

Iconic bar and restaurant to reopen in December 2016 with new design, menu concept, and island-inspired diversions

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Jumby Bay, A Rosewood Resort, the private island resort located just off the coast of Antigua, recently announced that its signature bar and restaurant, The Estate House, will reopen in December 2016 following a four-millionpound restoration. The circa 1830 plantation house, once the centerpiece of the island’s sugar plantation and the oldest building on Jumby Bay Island, will be returned to its former grandeur with a design scheme and culinary concept inspired by the home’s rich history and island traditions. The new Estate House will include a main restaurant and bar with three new private dining rooms each featuring a different island-inspired menu, as well as a wine room.

26

Representing a modern interpretation of the Colonial spirit, the restaurant’s menu combines classic fare with modern island flavours, drawing on the culinary traditions of the West Indies. Among the menu’s many highlights: Monkfish and black trumpet casserole with crispy jasmine rice pancake; Spiny lobster with Armagnac flambe, tomato, saffron pearl, and sear urchin; and Black sea bass with potato confit. For dessert, sweet indulgences include Rum Baba with berry compote and preserved citrus and Baked Alaska with rum flambe and Antiguan black pineapple. The Estate House’s three private dining rooms will also feature menus inspired by different regions of the world and the West Indies. The Blue Room will offer a variety of seafood, the Map Room will feature dishes from the Antilles region, and the Tent Room will feature dishes with Moroccan and North African flavors, drawing on the history of Spaniard colonists who had been under Moroccan influence before traveling to the Caribbean. The bar will boast an extensive rum collection as well as creative cocktails inspired by Antigua’s history including the Christopher Columbus, a powerful libation of English Harbour 5, Captain Morgan and Cointreau with lime, pineapple and pomegranate; the Carlisle Collins, a spicy blend of Johnnie Walker Black Label shaken with fresh lemon and home-made molasses nectar; and Colonial Classic, a refined concoction of Tanqueray 10 and Cavalier White rum stirred with St. Germaine elderflower liqueur and grapefruit oils. In the evening, guests will enjoy poker tournaments and sunset champagne cocktail hours, as well as special rum tastings. On Saturdays, The Estate House will invite guests to dress in their sportiest whites for games of lawn bowling while

enjoying Pimm’s Cup cocktails. The Sunday Rum Brunch will be another new signature of The Estate House, featuring rum-infused takes on classic brunch dishes, to include rum-raisin sticky buns with rum-infused honey and Antiguan Rum cappuccinos. “The restored Estate House will represent the best of the old and new,” said Andrew Hedley, Managing Director of Jumby Bay and Regional Vice President of Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. “Already renowned as one of Antigua’s most sought after dining destinations, the reimagined Estate House will emerge as the Caribbean’s ultimate social club for gourmet fare, sophisticated mixology, and mingling from day to night.” Richly combining the impressions of a traditional colonial home with a contemporary perspective, The Estate House’s redesign, led by acclaimed designer Dennis Irvine, represents a modern interpretation of the Colonial spirit. Retaining historical elements of the original structure, the redesign will pay homage to The Estate House’s roots in empire-era glamour with subtle nods to the island’s history and traditions throughout. A two-story, vaulted ceiling will provide a dramatic entryway to the bar, while an airy courtyard, connecting the main restaurant, three private dining rooms, and the Wine Room, will serve as an idyllic outdoor lounge space to savor pre or post dinner drinks, amongst tropical plants and a fountain made by a local artist. Curated local artwork depicting local Antiguan life, flora, and fauna, and vintage maps will adorn the walls, while sophisticated tableware and accessories in bespoke Ginori china, silver and crystal will offer a refined dining experience. Inspired by the island’s verdant landscape, a colour palette of rich greens will be employed, and handcrafted furnishings in ebony, teak, rattan, and wicker will emulate the style of past travellers and explorers. Sweeping terraces will offer unparalleled views of the island landscape. In keeping with The Estate House’s new look, restaurant and bar staff will wear fashionable uniforms designed by acclaimed designer Emilia Wickstead. The design of The Estate House’s three private dining rooms – The Map Room, The Tent Room, and the Blue Room will embody different facets of the island’s character. The Map Room will personify wanderlust and discovery through carefully curated objects and antique maps from the golden age of exploration. The Blue Room will feature hand painted trompe l’oeil island scenes and rich blues inspired by the twilight sky. Draped fabric ceiling and walls in the Tent Room create a romantic Empire Era dining experience. The Estate House will be open from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM Monday through Saturday and on Sundays for brunch and private dining. Extensive refurb of Hotel Indigo Liverpool completes

W

ork at Liverpool’s Hotel Indigo and Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill is officially complete following an extensive refurbishment.

The ground floor of the Chapel Street hotel, which is managed by Valor Hospitality Europe, has been transformed with a new modern design and an appetising new restaurant menu. As well as the bar and restaurant, the reception, gym and downstairs Cotton Lounge area have also benefited from the investment. Designed by the acclaimed interior designer, Gavin Liddle of Greyline Design, the hotel’s style now reflects Liverpool’s music and industrial heritage as well as cultural hot-spots from around the city. Liverpool’s once booming cotton trade is represented in the woven-effect wallpapers in the reception area and the reception desk and maitre’d station were designed to replicate old haberdashery units. Inspiration was also drawn from the city’s abandoned tobacco factories and the Albert Dock which is reflected in the distressed wood, exposed bulbs and timber drawers. Links to Liverpool’s impact on the 1960s music scene can be found in the artwork and decorative touches around the hotel including drum pendant lights over the reception desk and a yellow submarine in the bookcase. The black painted bricks in the reception area as well as the teal and black tiles to the front of the bar stem from nearby Mathew Street and the Cavern Club. Further hints to Liverpool’s history can be found in the classic, retro furniture in the reception which reflects the style of the 1950s and 1960s.

“After five years in the city, it was time for a fresh new outlook, and our guests will be impressed with the look and feel of the place - it has dramatically changed for the better, a place where people feel welcome and relaxed. “Our food offering has also expanded with a new lounge menu for those wanting a quick bite, while a revitalised main menu combines some of our most popular dishes with a host of exciting new additions, all reflecting Marco’s passion for classic food done consistently well.”

One of the main features in the restaurant is a bold geometric print floor, which was inspired by the façade of the Museum of Liverpool.

“We’re driven by providing the best possible hotel experience to all of our guests which is why we are currently investing in all 19 of the properties in our portfolio. The transformation of the Hotel Indigo and the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill is an example of the high standards we are aiming for and we hope to replicate this success across all of our hotels.” Mark Tasker, general manager at Hotel Indigo Liverpool, said: “As the Godfather of modern cooking, this relaunch reaffirms Marco Pierre White’s place at the very top of Liverpool’s growing restaurant scene. He is a true original, whose name has become synonymous with great food, impeccable service, at an affordable price. These are traits that will continue as we enter into a new chapter for the Marco brand here in Liverpool.

Further investment in the hotel is planned with upgrades to the bedrooms expected to take place in the future. Valor manages the 19 properties in its UK portfolio on behalf of investment vehicles affiliated with MCAP Global Finance Ltd. (“MCAP”), which is a UK subsidiary of New York based investment adviser Marathon Asset Management, LP.

Managing director of Valor Hospitality Europe, Brian McCarthy, said: “Gavin Liddle’s design has really brought to life our vision for the Hotel Indigo Liverpool. The sleek and contemporary design, as well as the brand new menu at the MPW restaurant has taken our offering at this hotel to a whole new level.

LAUSANNE’S HOTEL RE-OPENS WITH INTERIORS

A

fter years of shuttered decay and a seven-year rebuilding programme, Lausanne’s grande dame hotel, the Royal Savoy, has officially re-opened. Located in a beautiful private garden with set-piece views over the city to Lake Geneva, the original Art Nouveau building has been restored and sensitively modernised with architectural interventions revealing themselves as guests move through the building towards the glazed extension at the rear. From here, an entirely new building that has virtually doubled the footprint of the hotel becomes apparent, connected to the old building by a discreet, fully glazed walkway. The original building retains some of its early features, it is decoratively dressed and a little quirky in places; by contrast, the new building is sleek, streamlined and cleanly planned. Yet the two are clearly close kin, an elegant parent and a sophisticated offspring.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The Original Building – a grand chateau reinvented

28

The existing property has six floors plus the ground floor, a lower ground level and, soon to be completed, a huge rooftop bar. Once a refuge for exiled royals and aristocrats, as well as a playground for rock stars and other celebrities, the hotel now impresses in its re-rendering of a gracious retreat for contemporary lifestyles. On arrival, the newly infilled porch at the front of the hotel, with its vaulted ceiling and inlaid mosaic to the floor, sets the tone. A large concierge desk takes pride of place positioned in front of an opaque decorative glass screen which serves

to obscure the lounge behind. The lounge is the heart of the ‘chateau’, a grand double-height space revived as a showpiece, glamorous but in a paredback vernacular that we prefer today. New plaster mouldings, in a style similar to the original, have been introduced while elegant hand stencilling replicates the simplest of the earlier decoration to the walls. Among the remaining original features are finely-detailed stained glass windows overlooking the lounge, now joined by a fascinating display of historic local art and antiques from the owner’s personal collection and a centuries-old tapestry which embellishes a corridor wall leading to the lounge.

Furniture is designed with Belle Époque flourish and furnishings are plush, in a sophisticated colour palette of warm neutral tones and azure blue accents; a magnificent modern glass chandelier and illuminated ceiling coffers lined with gold leaf wallpaper add further drama. There is new herringbone oak timber flooring, as was previously used extensively throughout the hotel; on colder days, a new stone fireplace warms the space. Another custom-designed glass screen, this one translucent, curvaceous and overlaid with a bronze Art Nouveau fretwork stands at the far end of the lounge. A signature of so much of MKV’s work is the company’s thoughtful space planning which achieves a natural flow through rooms and entire buildings. Hotel Royal Savoy is no exception. Directly on from the lounge is the bar, initially obscured from view in the lounge by the screen but then revealing itself as an impressive light-filled space. This is thanks to an imposing new

double-height ‘glass box’ conservatory that has replaced an aging glass rotunda, which looks out on, and opens up to, the freshly landscaped terraces and garden.

To one side, a new cigar lounge spans the length of the glazed wall. With dark wood panelling, inviting fireplace and sumptuous armchairs the lounge is a quiet and deeply comfortable spot to enjoy a postprandial cigar. Modern abstract artwork by a local artist and collections of books provide pleasant diversion.

Restaurant Brasserie du Royal, under the guidance of Michelin-starred signature chef, Marc Haeberlin, and executive chef, Julien Kraus, is an elegant, lightfilled dining space. It compromises four interconnected rooms, providing quite different settings, both formal and informal, and allowing management to easily close off a room at quieter times of day. Old and new effortlessly merge. A modern open kitchen, for example, is juxtaposed with classic furniture detailed with a Swissembroidered motif and, while decorative lighting is contemporary and glamorous, an historical wall mural depicting a rural idyll has been relocated from the entrance lobby to provide a hand crafted ornamental feature in the central room. Demonstrating inventive reuse of space, a disused corridor alongside the restaurant has been transformed into a ‘Corridor of Senses’ – a promenade into the restaurant, lined with chill cabinets displaying regional wines, cheeses and cold cuts and with the names of the local vineyards spelt out in the delightful mosaic floor.

Renovation & Design

ROYAL SAVOY OFFICIALLY BY MKV DESIGN

Ballrooms & meeting rooms Hotel Royal Savoy now offers numerous function and meeting room options but such is the skilful planning and the integration of old and new parts, that the building quietly absorbs these spaces, never allowing them to overwhelm the dining and guest areas. The interior décor of the existing ground floor function and pre-function spaces combines cream and royal blue tones the plush appliqué curtains, complemented with decorative glass chandeliers and a contemporary graphic carpet design. The lower ground floor meeting rooms have a distinctive ceiling feature formed from recessed shards of illuminated alabaster. The new lower ground ballroom is now the largest function space. It can be divided into three rooms and opens onto a terrace with steps up to the garden.

Guestroom corridors are enhanced with large black and white photographs of moments from sporting history referring to Lausanne’s inheritance as the location for the International Olympic Committee’s headquarters. Many of the historic guestrooms offer charming balconies within the highly decorated eaves of the early 20th Century façade.

A three-bedroom rooftop penthouse delights in wrap-around glazing and a roof terrace offering panoramic views of the city and lake in one direction and the historic hotel in the other. The apartment includes a gym and a spa room with a whirlpool sauna and twoperson massage treatment area. Its master bedroom feels especially opulent with an outdoor whirlpool on the terrace.

A destination Spa Housed in the lower ground level of the new wing and opening up to an outdoor sunken terrace and garden, Le Spa du Royal provides an urban wellness oasis that is unique in Lausanne and is open to both local people and hotel guests. The 1500m2 space includes a beautiful swimming pool which flows from indoors into the gardens, eight treatment rooms, vitality pools, hammam, sauna and steam rooms, a “Ladies only” spa, two relaxation rooms, a hair studio and a state-of-the-art fitness facility. The spa is a resolutely modern feature of the hotel, with dark and silvery toned finishes including Nero Assoluto marble flooring, iroko and oak timber and mosaic tiles, softened by copious shear curtaining.

Guestrooms in the Original Building The New Building Guestrooms + Suites The 96 bedrooms in the six-storeyed new building are more contemporary in style than their older cousins, while sharing most of the key elements with the original rooms. Bathrooms are finished with Crema Marfil walls, honed anthracite flooring, polished anthracite vanity tops and bath surrounds and Nero Assoluto on the shower floor. Many of the guestrooms benefit from generously-sized terraces looking onto the historic trees which grace the garden. Imposing grey leather padded bed heads, dark timber cabinetry with cream leather padded doors and a mirrored bathroom wall which reflects the treetop views through the fully glazed wall to the terrace combine to create an exclusive experience.

Summing up the achievement, Maria Vafiadis, managing director of MKV Design says: “We took our cues from the old building and honoured its history in our design thinking but we have, in so many respects, created a new hotel. Our aim has been to reinstate the ambience of the previous establishment within a contemporary hotel in a way that is relevant and exciting for guests today and which will enable our client to unlock all sorts of potential from both the old and the new buildings.”

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The 101 bedrooms in the historic building have been completely refurbished and updated. As befits the venerable old property, room shapes and sizes vary with bathrooms, bedrooms and dressing areas built out to tuck into the building forms. The new interiors are refined, with subtle tones of French grey and dark oak, a modern Nouveau style rug on herringbone oak flooring, and classic furnishings by renowned manufacturers. Photographs of the Royal Savoy as she once was add and intriguing insight the hotel’s past. Most bathrooms include both a walk-in shower and bathtub. Walls are clad in Perlino Bianco marble, and the floor, vanity and bath surround in anthracite stone while the shower floor is finished in hammered and brushed black granite.

Flexfurn

launches two new modular design Collections

Under the name X-Design Flexfurn, the Belgian manufacturer of folding and stacking furniture, is launching two new innovative product lines onto the market. The LAZE collection and the FLOW collection have three characteristics in common: they are light, extremely strong and modular. Moreover, they have been designed with the focus on attractive contemporary design and are suitable for outdoor use. They meet the market requirements of catering entrepreneurs, event organisers, offices, shopping centres, care institutions, etc. who are looking for affordable ergonomic and flexible design furniture. LAZE is a collection of seating furniture and FLOW is the table and bench collection. An outdoor version has been added to the popular KUBO collection. For the design of the new LAZE collection Flexfurn worked together with Boonen Design Studio. At the start of this year Frédéric Boonen received a Henry van de Velde Award with his Buggybooker as best product on the market.

The LAZE lounge sets

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

With the LAZE lounge set Flexfurn meets the increasing demand for functional yet exclusive outdoor lounge furniture. Industrial designer Frédéric Boonen took as a basis here the keywords lounge, design, light, modular and outdoor. The result is the surprising LAZE collection.

32

The LAZE chair is the centrepiece of the collection. A particularly light shellshaped seat with back support. The rounded shapes are the result of the rotation moulding production method. The high-quality polyethylene used for this makes the seats light, strong, maintenancefriendly and UV-resistant, four important basic characteristics for outdoor furniture. Because of the fine grain of the 100% recyclable polyethylene, the LAZE collection is very easy to keep clean. A number of clever details provide extra durability and ease of use. There are four wear-resistant feet underneath the LAZE chair so that it stands firmly on the ground and does not get damaged. Using the handy connector you can click the chairs neatly and discretely into the configuration of your choice. The lumen LED lights can be attached to the connector by a handy magnet, creating surprising light effects. The LAZE chair can be used with or without cushions.

Chair cushions are available in high-quality Sunbrella fabrics and are filled with EZY dry foam, a foam with the right specifications for intensive outdoor use. The LAZE ottoman is the perfect addition to the chair. If the word multifunctional didn’t already exist, we would have had to invent it for the ottoman! The ottoman can also be used as a small table and as a pouf, but equally well as a small seat, ice bucket, plant container or protection for parasol feet. Of course, the features that make the chair so interesting also apply to the ottoman: wear-resistant feet, connector, magnetic lumen LED lights and cushions in various designs. As an extra with every ottoman you receive a table top and a cap at the bottom of the hollow space for easy water drainage. The chairs and ottomans can be stacked together on a handy trolley that enables the transport of up to ten units.

Renovation & Design The FLOW tables and benches The approach to the design of the FLOW collection was identical to that for the LAZE collection with an extra dimension: the tables and benches had to be folding. For this reason James Verbeeck opted for a lightweight aluminium frame to which he added extra stability with handy adjusting feet. The highquality white coating is ideal for events and outdoor use. The black coating looks particularly attractive in combination with the tops in bamboo, perfect for trendy urban catering. The FLOW grande is a high long bar table. The FLOW dinner is the low shorter version. These two lightweight frames have easily interchangeable table tops in melamine, bamboo or solid core composite material. Melamine is the standard material for indoor use and is available in a variety of colours. Bamboo not only looks very attractive, but is also suitable for outdoor use in good weather conditions. Finally, the solid core composite tops in white or black are ideal for heavy

duty outdoor use. The bamboo version is particularly interesting due to the specific properties of this natural product. Bamboo is 27% stronger and 50% more water-resistant than oak. A bamboo leaf has no knots and is resistant to insects and fungi. Flexfurn ensures that only FSCcertified sustainable bamboo is used for production. The FLOW benches have exactly the same characteristics as the tables: an aluminium folding frame and interchangeable seats. If required, a wide variety of James Verbeeck, CEO cushions are also available. Flexfurn: “Outdoor is a fastFor those customers who are a growing segment with a lot looking for an alternative to the of requirements of its own. benches with the FLOW grande, Outdoor design furniture not there is the KUBO Smart Bar only has to be functional, but aluminium, a high stacking bar also attractive, comfortable stool with an aluminium frame. and affordable. Barkers Home impresses with

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Moduleo

34

Barkers Home, the Northallerton-based furnishing and lifestyle store, has selected the Mountain Oak from luxury vinyl flooring manufacturer, Moduleo’s Impress collection for a recent refurbishment. With durability, style and a realistic representation of wood all being key requirements, Moduleo was chosen for the main shop floor on both the first and second levels, as well as the café area. Stuart McCarthy, managing director of Cadence Retail and Leisure Interiors, who led the design and fit-out of the store, comments: “As with any retail environment, the main elements of the brief are primarily focussed on style – to reflect the quality of the products sold in store, and durability, to ensure the product can handle high levels of footfall during busy periods. “Moduleo was the obvious choice for Barkers. The Impress collection in particular is on-trend, costeffective and incredibly good-quality, making it ideal for a store of this size and standard.” Ian Barker, director of Barkers, adds: “We’re thoroughly impressed with the Moduleo flooring. The slip-resistant rating of R10, and ten-year warranty in particular were key selling points for us, in addition to the outstanding and realistic woodeffect design of the flooring.” Moduleo flooring was fitted throughout Barkers Home as part of a £3 million revamp, which included a 20,000 sq ft expansion. David Bigland, managing director of Moduleo UK and Eire, explains: “Barkers was a great project to be a part of. Legrand’s Haute Couture Designs set to Accessorise Luxury London

Designed for high-end hospitality and residential markets, the new range brings a European twist on the already extensive Legrand wiring accessories collection in the UK. Offering a wide selection of finishes and functions, including home automation controls, the monobloc designs present a wealth of combinations for the ultimate luxurious finish. The Art d’Arnould collection is available in three distinctive decorative worlds– Memoire, is modern and stylised, with a traditional twist, whereas Epure is both raw and minimalist, in a variety of metal finishes. Finally, there is Fusion offering a bold and eclectic style that mirrors the chasing designs and braided décor of the Palace of Versailles in the mid 1700’s. Richard Hayward at Legrand comments: “Just as the fashion

houses draw inspiration from numerous sources; from history to the natural world, wiring accessories are no different. For Art d’Arnould we see a blend of style, technology and history all coming together in a stunning collection of accessories for the luxury market. “No longer are homes and businesses constricted to white plastic switches and sockets, there is a choice and Art d’Arnould reflects the need for these tailored design solutions.” Art d’Arnould, like its sister ranges Synergy and Arteor, also offer the flexibility to include a series of technological advances such as automated lighting and AV control as well as multimedia functionality such as USB and HDMI.

from Holiday Inn to Crowne Plaza in Plymouth and Harrogate are planned for early 2017. Brian McCarthy, managing director of Valor Hospitality Europe, said: “We felt that bringing the Crowne Plaza brand to each of these four hotels would be the best way to enhance our offering to our customers in these regions. “Each hotel is in an easy to reach location for business use and already has excellent meeting and conference facilities which is a key offering for

Crowne Plaza hotels. Once the rebrand is complete, the hotels will focus on connectivity, wellness and business needs to ensure we’re meeting the demands of customers in these locations.” The health and wellbeing of guests also plays a big role in each of the four rebranded hotels with new ‘fast and fresh’ menus available as well as ‘Energy Stations’ which include local running, walking and cycling routes to help guests maintain their fitness routines.

The teams at each of the four Holiday Inns will be staying on board at the hotels under the new Crowne Plaza model. The Coravin Wine System is the only tool in the world that lets you pour wine without ever removing the cork using Coravin’s proprietary technology. Now wine enthusiasts can expand their palates by exploring, comparing and contrasting regions, varietals, producers, styles and vintages without exposing entire bottles to oxidation. Restaurants and wine bars can use the Coravin System to expand their wine programs by offering better wines by the glass, without the risk of oxidization if a bottle is not sold that night, while wineries and wine stores can offer customers a taste of fine wines before they buy.

The Synergy Grill is a pioneering chargrill that uses 52% less gas. This gas saving equates to an average of £12,238 every five years, helping cultivate a carbon neutral kitchen. It also uniquely has no fat tray to clean. The greatest benefit, however, is flavour. Synergy Grills get hotter than average chargrills. Heat ‘atomises’ the natural fats that are released during cooking which are misted back into food making it incredibly succulent.

ESP Energy There has been extensive research in to the way consumers book holidays and travel activities, the latest results have shown a growing awareness for more ecofriendly hotels and leisure facilities. The Carbon Trust is helping TripAdvisor to extend their Green Leaders programme, which highlights particular hotels that actively participate in environmentally friendly practices. As part of the Green Leaders programme, establishments are tiered with Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum awards. A number of hotels already take part in the programme, including Macdonald Hotels and Resorts.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Applying environmentally-friendly, energy efficient procedures, means lighting and heating expenses can often be lowered by more than 50%, whilst still enhancing the overall experience of the stay. By installing energy efficient measures such as solar panels to reduce electricity costs or reducing both heating and electricity costs by connecting to a combined heat and power unit, businesses can save on energy bills, earn an additional income from Government incentives and raise their profile as eco buildings in the ‘Green Leaders’ programme.

46

Such renewable technology projects would be particularly beneficial in combination with hotel swimming pools and spas, as these facilities demand large quantities of energy. With Hotels being refurbished every 7-10 years, there is an opportunity to maximise this opportunity and implement these changes with minimum disruption. ESP Energy are MCS accredited, ensuring that your project will be implemented to the highest standards. With experience of over three hundred commercial installations including the following technologies - heat pumps, solar panels, underfloor heating, biomass boilers, combined heat & power (CHP) and district heating schemes.

ESP Energy have recently completed a 2.2MW district heating scheme in the picturesque tourist attraction “Portmeirion” in North Wales. A total of 27 properties have been linked together on to one district heating scheme with over 3.5km of underground pipework. This project tested the skill and ingenuity of ESP Energy, due to the 70m height difference from the castle at the top, to the hotel at the bottom, areas of pure rock to dig through and delicate architecture. This project was carried out in the winter months, between November and March, when there were fewer visitors to the village, although the site was open to the public the entire time. All work had to be scheduled around the paying guests and their requirements. For a free site survey or further guidance on how renewable technologies can work for you please contact ESP Energy at info@espenergy.co.uk or phone 01743 718003.

“I sentence you to a night at the luxurious Courthouse hotel”

S

horeditch is known for its vibrant surroundings, Vintage chic and wonderful coffee. With so much to see and so much to do you wouldn’t have perhaps put a magistrate’s court at the top of the list when looking for accommodation. That is until you visit the Courthouse hotel situated in the heart of east London. Once upon a time the same location would have been connected to holding some of the most infamous criminals in all of London. In fact, although wonderfully designed the hotel has managed to keep its history intact with newspaper clippings and original structure on this grade II listed building.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

There are many fantastic options when staying at the Courthouse. Whether it be a wonderful meal at the restaurant, A relaxing drink on the rooftop bar, A comfy chill at the in house Cinema (196 seats) or even a game of bowling…Yes that’s right bowling. There is plenty of entertainment and with it being in such a great location you are only a stone’s throw away from the Shoreditch night life.

52

With all of this on offer it is delightfully accompanied by an extremely pleasant stay. The rooms are generously spacious and equipped with everything you need for a 5* experience. Bedding is high quality and comfortable. The waiting staff are fantastic and are at your service throughout the evening. The Rooftop bar gives you a beautiful view and on the evening we stayed we were treated to a spectacular surprise show of fireworks, which made the experience one to remember. If you’re planning a social stay I highly recommend the Courthouse in. It brings the luxury of the west end to Shoreditch and can also be used for business events with a number of meeting rooms. There is a wonderful history echoing throughout this Boutique hotel which gives you a taste for the east end of years gone by.

Afternoon Tea Hotelier & Hospitality Design

with a Twist

Having sampled a huge selection of Afternoon Teas over the years, there really wasn’t much excitement as we made our way down Oxford Street to the Radisson Blue Edwardian Berkshire. Passing the hundreds of shoppers on our way to another unexciting selection of sandwiches and a couple of cakes, we joked about heading off to get a ‘proper lunch’ after.

We were asked to head up to the first floor, where we were welcomed by the large glass double doors and the happily enthusiastic staff of the Scoff & Banter Tea Room.

The Spiced scallops and cauliflower beignets are perfectly cooked, light and bursting with the natural sea flavours. However, the real stand out for us was the Lamb Cutlet with a mint, lemon and Cyprus Parsley crust. A perfectly cooked piece of meat that left me nibbling at the bone to draw more of the juices out. A great start to the meal!

Having been seated we were talked through the menu, which gave us some real optimism for the afternoon. The menu is broken into four sections. These are Hot Dishes, Scones, Sandwiches and Desserts. Fire Safety

New Smartphone App Cuts Risk of Fire Injury and Fire Door Fines

Hotel and facility managers are risking the safety of guests and staff and fines of up to £2,000 per incident by failing to ensure fire doors are unlocked and unblocked. Penalties can reach £100,000 for multiple offences from a single fire safety inspection. A new smartphone app, Lodgic, enables managers to check that fire doors are attended and unlocked during opening hours, and then secured again at the correct time, for just £12 per month, which includes 24-7 remote monitoring. The app is downloaded by staff and features a ‘tour’ program with a pre-set activity log; a message and alarm prompts the user to check each fire door and scan a printed QR barcode with the camera function at a preset time, which can vary with opening hours. At the Lodgic control centre at Redditch, software remotely monitors the activity logged on the app. There is an automatic alert if scheduled activity is not completed at a pre-set time and a series of warning prompts sent to the user; if the task is not completed then the centre manager is alerted and will phone the site manager. If there is no response, escalation can include contacting head office or the emergency services.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The scanning of each barcode is time stamped, with the location recorded from the smartphone’s GPS system – so there is a record for management and fire inspection authorities.

66

“Many sites fail to manage multiple fire doors consistently across several sites; locking times vary and you’re reliant on a staff member to remember. The app gives the site manager - and senior management - the reassurance that all fire doors are under control at every site, at all times,” says Simon Chapman, of Lodge Service, who operate the Lodgic app and control centre service. Other services available include patrol and response and ‘ad hoc’ guarding, with the intelligence centre despatching teams to repair damage or secure a site when required. Fire Safety

Fire Safety with Hotels What’s the ‘Risk’?

The History of Fire

Within the UK, Fire Safety legislation is built on strong foundations, much of which was introduced following very serious fires, many of which involved high loss of life. Historically the Fire and Rescue Service would initially advise on the fire safety arrangements required within a building and, where necessary, issue formal notices specifying the work required before they would grant a ‘Fire Certificate’ for that building. The introduction of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RRO) saw a move to place the ownership & responsibility for fire within buildings firmly with the occupier and or employer, and responsible person/s who have any form of control within the premise. The Responsible Person must ensure that an up to date Fire Risk Assessment is provided where persons are employed to work, on payment or otherwise (including volunteers), or where members of the public have access. If more than 5 people are employed then the Fire Risk Assessment must be written. The guidance under the RRO for Hotels is entitled Fire Safety Risk Assessment - Sleeping Accommodation which runs to 147 pages.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Major Risk from Fire

68

By far the highest risk from fire is associated with those buildings where there is a sleeping risk. This increases in those buildings where the occupants are unfamiliar with the building. Factor in other issues such as alcohol, language barriers, poor management and levels of staff training, and the risks become even greater.

The Impact of Fire

If your business was unfortunate and suffered the impact of a fire - what would be the damage? Clearly this is determined by the amount of pre-planning undertaken prior to the event. ‘Failing to Plan’ is ‘Planning

to Fail’. Without appropriate level of fire safety systems and provisions, management controls, maintenance, emergency planning and staff training being in place it is probable that any small incident would escalate and develop into a major fire from which it is unlikely that any business could survive.

systems and assessors have been thoroughly and independently evaluated and will continue to be delivered to an agreed specification. However, anyone can set up a third party certification scheme, so to be credible it should be accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).

The damage associated with fire goes beyond the potential loss of life and buildings, but also includes loss of business, with 80% of those suffering a major fire never recovering. Then there is the enforcement action following Police and Fire Service investigations and this can encompass a range of ‘responsible persons’ including members of the board, regional & local managers, fire safety system installers, fire risk assessors, etc.

FARMSS are accredited by the BAFE SP205 scheme which has been accredited by UKAS since 2012.

Fire Risk Assessment

Managing Risk Considerations

Does your company have a robust Fire Risk Assessment that has been determined by a ‘competent’ person? Is the Fire Risk Assessment a live document known by all staff and regularly reviewed to ensure that it remains fit for purpose?

Under the RRO there is a duty on the ‘responsible person’ to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment. This can be undertaken by a ‘competent person’ who has the appropriate training, experience and knowledge. The responsibility for the selection of the competent person ultimately rests with the ‘responsible person’.

Are the action plans identified within the Fire Risk Assessment being appropriately managed / discharged?

The Fire Risk Assessment is the singularly most important element of fire safety within buildings as this determines the current levels of fire safety protection within the building and considers the impact upon ‘life’ safety should a fire occur.

Are robust ‘Emergency Plans’ in place that give full consideration to the need to evacuate all those within the building including those persons who may require assistance?

Ensuring Competency

To help business owners make informed decisions about who they should employ to assist them in managing fire safety, third party accreditation systems have been developed. Third party certification bodies assess companies or individuals to make sure work is carried out to a set standard designed to give confidence to specifiers, users, occupiers, owners and enforcement bodies that management

If you were visited by the enforcing authority would your Fire Risk Assessment and progress of discharging the action plans be found wanting?

Are fire drills undertaken to test the emergency plan at least every 12-months, with the result recorded? Do your staff have a good understanding of the findings of the Fire Risk Assessment and their role within an emergency, and have they received levels of training appropriate to their roles? Have sufficient numbers of Fire Marshals been trained and has this been tested within a realistic drill scenario to ensure your emergency plan is fit for purpose?

Fire Safety Has a Fire Marshal refresher training programme been established? - it is recommended that this should be completed every 12-months and should include the use of fire extinguishers within real fire training. Have the roles & responsibilities of each Fire Marshal been recorded in writing and have they signed to confirm their understanding of the duties placed upon them? Have Fire Safety system testing and maintenance programmes been established and are they fit for purpose and up to date. E.g. Fire Alarm system, Emergency Lighting, Fire Safety signs and notices, firefighting equipment & installations, etc.? Are management controls in place that ensure the means of escape in the building are regularly checked to confirm that they are available in the event of an emergency? Are escape routes free from combustibles, fire doors shut and not wedged open, store rooms locked shut and, waste management controls enforced?

Yeoman Shield Proves to be the Perfect Recipe for Restaurant Doors A staff restaurant run by catering company Gather & Gather in a prominent business centre in Leeds needed to solve the problem of damaged doors connecting the back of house kitchen area with the front of house dining area. Catering for staff employed by Blue Chip companies whose offices are housed in the centre, the restaurant finds itself very busy at all times throughout the day. “The long working hours and the amount of customers we serve can lead to the kitchen doors being opened up to 800 times a day and they are usually not opened by hands but by the end of trolleys and carts being pushed through them. This can lead to the doors becoming damaged and looking scruffy and marked.” explained catering manager Martin Bradshaw.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The facilities management company in charge of the business centre buildings sourced a solution, to preventing the continual damage that the expensive fire doors were experiencing, from a range of fire rated door protection products from Yeoman Shield.

70

“Over the last 13 years we have had to replace the kitchen fire doors twice, each time costing in the region of £1,200.00. With Yeoman Shield door protection installed this expense will be a thing of the past. We were also confident, due to the fire certification provided by Yeoman Shield that installing these products would in no way affect the integrity of the fire doors.” commented the building facilities manager. Yeoman Shield’s directly employed fixing team installed 2.0mm thick door protection panels with a FalmouthEx finish to both sides of the double swing kitchen doors in a Buff colour.

1 hour fire rated door edge protectors were then installed to both the leading and hinged edge of the doors which were then finished off with a low level kick plate in a contrasting Brown. “It’s important that the doors on show to the public look clean and hygienic giving the customer confidence that what is behind the doors in the kitchen working area will also live up to this standard. We are very pleased with the Yeoman Shield products on the door which still look brand new even though it has been in place for many months.” Concluded Karen Fisher, operations director for Gather & Gather catering company. 5 Things to know PAT Testing Law PAT Testing is not a legal requirement but it’s one of the best solutions to ensure you have in place processes for maintaining your portable electrical appliances; meeting your legal obligation under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. There are very few electrical fires in the work place while a huge number of electrical fires are recorded in homes across the country. D.I.Y. Anyone can PAT Test, you just have to be competent enough to follow the PAT Test instructions, Instructional DVD or have attended a training course. The advantage to doing it yourself is that you can manage costs, down time of equipment and use existing staff that have a quiet period. Employers are responsible and liable so testing and maintaining records demonstrate that you are inspecting giving you peace of mind should there ever be a problem in the future. Other advantages include the ability to test items out of hours, items bought in from other premises and security, where you don’t want contractors wandering around disrupting your guests. Contractors There are lots of contractors offering very competitive rates to do your PAT Testing so it’s worth considering, but remember, like all trades we have our cowboys known as the ‘Sticker Brigade’. Lots of bona fide electricians won’t do PAT Testing as it is time consuming and so difficult to give competitive rates and do the job properly. Research to get the right contractor, as the business owner

is liable and responsible so they need to be meeting the standards you consider acceptable. The main disadvantage of a contractor is there is a certain amount of disruption and in most instances; they only come in once a year. Story - We had an electrician in our premises recently who was telling us about a PAT testing job he had done. Normally he doesn’t do this but it was a favour so he did the job, the Owner was getting really frustrated with him as he felt the job was taking too long. When asked by the business owner why it had taken so long these were his answers. I have completed the following, visually inspected 150 appliances & checked fuses with 27 needing replacements. PAT Tested & completed records for 150 appliances. Replaced plugs on 6 appliances, repaired 2 appliances and failed 1 appliance. The owner was horrified, as his contractor had never recorded any faults, repaired any appliances or bought to his attention anything needing attention. Frequency Frequency of testing is risk based. Items rarely moved or unplugged can be tested as little as every couple of years. High risk items used with water and moved frequently in high risk areas should be tested every six months. More information is available at http://www.hse.gov.uk/ pubns/indg236.pdf Good Practice Establishing good testing protocols helps you monitor your equipment; it’s also helps identify where working practices can improve the lifetime of appliances, more flexible resources & increase employee awareness. Insurance companies often mandate PAT Testing.
