wo of Europe’s leading hotel companies, Borealis Hotel Group and Cycas Hospitality, have this week announced a strategic partnership to open and operate new, branded hotels across Europe. The first phase of the collaboration was revealed this week with the

signing of a hotel management agreement for Cycas to operate the 108-room Motto by Hilton Rotterdam Blaak, as well as a second, new hotel that will be announced in early 2022. Set to open mid-2022, the Rotterdam hotel – a converted, former bank – represents the first Motto by Hilton to open in the Netherlands, as well as

the urban lifestyle brand’s European debut. The Motto brand prides itself on offering guests a launch pad to the most desirable urban locations to help them connect with the neighbourhood culture. The hotel’s central Rotterdam location, just 350m from Rotterdam Blaak metro station,

Introducing Silestone® Ethereal:

Marble Look Surfaces Perfect for Contemporary Projects • •

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

6

The evolution of Silestone® has inspired Ethereal, a collection of white canvas surfaces with intricate marble look patterns which recreate the natural beauty of the sky. In addition to kitchen and bathroom applications as a worktop or splashback, Silestone® is also ideal for more ambitious interior design projects where interior cladding, furniture cladding and flooring is required. Ethereal is perfect for both commercial and residential projects where a modern yet timeless aesthetic is desired. Silestone® Ethereal features HybriQ+® technology, meaning that in the production process 99% of reused water from the production processes is used, along with 100% renewable electric energy. What’s more, a minimum of 20% recycled raw materials are used in the material composition, alongside mineral raw materials, helping to provide an eco-friendly solution for luxury architectural or interior design projects.

S

ilestone® by Cosentino, the leading global hybrid mineral surface for the world of architecture and design, is excited to introduce its second collection worldwide under its new corporate image. The new Silestone® emblem and character has given rise to the Ethereal collection, which is supported with a major campaign featuring entrepreneur and international fashion icon, Cindy Crawford.

This marble-inspired collection consists of four colours, namely Ethereal Dusk, Ethereal Haze, Ethereal Glow, and Ethereal Noctis. Each colour showcases a deep, fine veining on a white foundation and thanks to HybriQ+® technology, they have been developed with at least 20% recycled raw materials, helping to provide an eco-friendly solution for luxury architectural or interior design projects. Silestone® Ethereal Colours Ethereal Glow is simply pure, classic elegance. Its golden and grey veining merges with a tinged white foundation, with veining running through the entire design to bring an accent of colour to every corner. Inspired by the sunset and its igneous colours and glow, it is an evolution of Silestone®’s internationally acclaimed and widely popular Eternal Calacatta Gold colour. Ethereal Dusk showcases an urban look in which the bluish tone of its veining brings a modern and

avant-garde touch to any space. It symbolises a unique, unforgettable and personal sunrise, with feelings of peace, solemnity and tranquility. Ethereal Haze includes a dynamic range of grey tones to emit plenty of personality. It takes inspiration from the way the wind moves the clouds over the mountains, with the result both calm and characterful thanks to an interplay of gradients which blend into pure neutrality. Ethereal Noctis is synonymous with sophistication. The tinged white foundation is broken up with short grey and black veins, providing contrast, depth, simplicity and modernity, inspired by the darkness after sunset. Silestone® Ethereal & HybriQ+ Ethereal is a collection created with the exclusive and pioneering HybriQ® technology by Silestone®. Launched in 2020, the

production process is characterised by the company’s commitment to the environment, the circular economy and sustainable management. The manufacturing process of Silestone® with HybriQ+ uses 99% reused water from the production processes, 100% renewable electric energy and a minimum of 20% recycled raw materials in its composition, alongside mineral raw materials. With this new composition, Silestone® retains its timeless beauty, as well as its mechanical and technical performance, quality, hygiene certifications and 25-year warranty. In addition to kitchen and bathroom applications as a worktop or splashback, Silestone® is also ideal for more ambitious interior design projects where interior cladding and furniture cladding and flooring is required.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Ethereal by Silestone® represents a quantum leap in terms of design, innovation and sustainability, in line with the transition that Silestone® is undergoing externally and internally with the development of the cuttingedge HybriQ® and HybriQ+® technologies. This evolution of Silestone® has inspired Ethereal, a collection of white canvas surfaces with intricate marble look patterns which recreate the natural beauty of the sky, perfect for both commercial and residential projects where a modern yet timeless aesthetic is desired.

The Greyhound On Test Stockbridge is a pretty little town in Hampshire. Unless you’re a keen fisher or shooter, chances are you haven’t heard of it.

t is a quaint little place, in which the High Street is filled which quirky shops and a few cosy-looking pubs with The Greyhound On The Test being the epitome.

12

Standing elegantly at one end is The Greyhound on the Test. It is, like many these days, a pub-restaurant-hotel hybrid, keen to attract punters of all types and keep them there for as long as possible and dog friendly(obviously with the name). They’re doing a good job, because as soon as we stepped in it was evident it would be a hard to leave. The pub/hotel’s sports the classic dark flooring and low ceilings,

and the windows are of early 19th-century proportions which means the lighting is flatteringly dim. It looks like a good ol’ fashioned country pub, but study the details and you see it is rather more than that. There is a superb selection of wines by the glass (along with the beers and ales), the snack menu features oysters, and the hand towels in the bathroom are ludicrously good quality. The pub’s/hotel’s restaurant is housed on other side of the bar, and it was full to the brim. What’s more, with most of the punters in shabby-chic country attire, it was evident that they were locals, which is always a sign of consistent standards.

In fitting with enviroment, the menu features predominantly British dishes including (amongst many others). Our meats were perfectly roasted, the sides plentiful, and the puddings enormous in portion (another satisfyingly British trait). Breakfast the next day is hearty and homemade, and if

The Greyhound on the Test shows no such shortcomings. Part sanctuary, part luxury destination, part outlet for glorious gluttony, it is in all a little bit of Britishness worthy of a visit.

The Room I stayed in was adjacent to the garden area, which had 3 lovely dining domes, which Becks was most generous to let us dine in one, which was fabulous. The food was of real quality, high end deserving of their AA rosette star, they also sent dessert to my room for later which was a lovely personal touch.

the weather is nice it can even be enjoyed out on the terrace. Once you’ve taken your fill of local bacon and sausages, both Winchester and Salisbury are a short drive away, so you can spend the rest of your day in another holiday habit of ambling round historic sites.

Taking back control: lighting systems for the hotel industry Hotel rooms are left unoccupied around 70% of the time. So, without automated room control management, hotel buildings waste enormous amounts of energy at the expense of the environment — and rack up hefty utility bills.

T

hat is why hotel maintenance teams turn to intelligent lighting control systems to improve room management, provide a seamless guest experience and minimise energy consumption. By connecting to the power circuits that supply a room, these intelligent systems can manipulate and monitor not just the lighting but sockets, solenoid valves, fan coil units, minibars, televisions, USB ports and more. Facilitating a greener future

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

During the coronavirus lockdown of 2020, research suggested that many hotels had only reduced their energy consumption by 16% on average, despite rooms being unoccupied for weeks at a time.

14

However, intelligent controls have been found to reduce hotel energy consumption by 28% and make the job of facilities managers easier. With automation, maintenance engineers can regain control over energy use by turning off power supplies in rooms when they are not occupied or adjusting the energy consumed by different applications in response to their changing use. Providing ultimate control with architectural lighting For a more comprehensive and flexible control solution, a bespoke architectural control system is preferred. In a luxury hotel, where occupants might have paid thousands of pounds for their stay, every detail counts.

Every fixture in a room can be monitored remotely with architectural lighting controls, providing accurate real-time data and alerting staff immediately to anything from a leaking pipe to a bulb outage. Emergency light testing can also be automated to ensure buildings remain fully compliant, giving hotel managers one less thing to worry about. Delivering flexible, fully networkable lighting control solutions Innovative room and lighting controls can provide a hotel with a unique atmosphere and user experience for both staff and guests. TheisCraft provides fully flexible control systems for luxury hotels to improve hotel management and elevate the guest experience.

Software and technology are purpose-built for each specification, ensuring every room operates at the optimum energy-consumption level while maximising comfort. These solutions are easily maintainable with a no-fuss ‘plugand-play’ installation, allowing facilities managers to start saving time, energy and money from the moment the system is up and running.

An iconic warehouse in Brooklyn is reborn as Ciot New York Family owned since 1950, natural stone expert Ciot has expanded its US footprint selecting Brooklyn as the home for their new 35,000 square foot showroom and slab galleria.

L

ocated at 5302 2nd Avenue, the space was a former machine manufacturing company established by E.W. Bliss in the mid 1800s.

The complex was completely transformed by New York multidisciplinary interior design studio BxSM from a raw industrial space to a modern museum-like design destination. The minimalist aesthetic is the perfect canvas to spotlight Ciot’s extensive range of materials.

CIOT’s new home in Brooklyn is a much-anticipated event: “Increasing our presence in New York allows us to showcase our exclusive collection internationally sourced by Ciot’s experienced team of buyers”, explained Ciot Group CEO Joe Panzera. “The Brooklyn showroom is designed as a space to facilitate meetings and interact with the world of design”. Leveraging the appeal of the building’s retro industrial style, every detail was reinterpreted accordingly,

beginning with the materials. Grey marble covers the length of the floors, ebony-stained red oak storage systems are paired with large bamboo tables, while natural stone, ceramics and porcelains hang on the walls like tapestries. Moving from the large foyer, visitors can access the 18,000-sf sky-lit slab galleria housing the company’s stone slabs in a Zen-like environment, with large Ficus trees and marble desks where clients can meet and work in total silence.

Ultimately, the interior design aims to soften the industrial side of the original structure and highlight that of an art gallery rather than a showroom. The result is a luxury goto mecca not only for homeowners seeking Ciot’s expert advice but also for real estate developers, interiors designers, architects, contractors, and stone fabricators, who can meet with their clients to make selections in an inspiring atmosphere, where a world of design awaits.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

This new creative hub will also offer unique services such as Ciot Studio – a collaborative workshop where clients can commission highly trained mosaic maestros to create one-of-a-kind, custom masterpieces – to the Ciot Slab Galleria – where a curated collection of the finest natural stone slabs sourced from leading quarries around the globe are displayed like works of art. The showroom aims to inspire and exceed the demands of those who are looking to find the best in natural stone and engineered slabs, mosaics, tiles, and hardwood for their upcoming residential or commercial projects.

Bolsius Professional highlights the importance of ambiance in helping establishments increase dwell time and repeat custom Europe’s largest candle manufacturer, Bolsius Professional has found that over 90% of consumers in the UK and the Republic of Ireland (ROI) believe that ambiance is an important factor when deciding which hospitality venues to visit. Let’s bring the extraordinary to the table: The Bolsius Professional guide to ambiance in hospitality, highlights how ambiance, and particularly candlelight, can impact a customer’s experience. The candle producer’s new guide shows that 81% surveyed stated that ambiance is a factor in their decision to stay out longer, or to return to an establishment. Packed with insight on the nation’s candle preferences, as well as tips on how to bring areas to life using candlelight, the guide is designed to be a valuable reference for anyone wanting to transform the atmosphere of their indoor or outdoor offering this winter. Paul Christodoulou, National Account Manager UK & Ireland Out of Home and Hospitality at Bolsius Professional and Member of the Institute of Hospitality

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

said, “It’s not been easy navigating through these uncertain times, but our research demonstrates that it’s more important than ever for operators to enhance their offering by improving the overall customer experience.”

20

Linda van de Wiel, Brand Experience Manager at Bolsius Professional added, “While ambiance can be created using myriad of tools including décor, music and lighting, our research shows that more than two thirds of UK consumers and nearly three quarters of ROI consumers feel that lighting and candlelight are important to their experience. By looking at the challenges faced by the industry, as well as what patrons want from their experience, we’re helping professionals add that all-important wow factor and showcase their offering in the best possible light.” Download a copy of the Bolsius Professional guide to ambiance in hospitality at: www.bolsius.com/en/professional/guide-to-ambiance

Campden BRI testing proves HyGenikx kills airborne Coronavirus As a tried and tested technology, HyGenikx has a huge role to play in controlling infections - in fact HyGenikx is the most rigorously tested unit of its type on the market. Affordable and easy to install, HyGenikx is a plug and play solution for a challenging world.

These results back up the reallife experience of our customers including Cyrus Todiwala OBE DL, owner of Café Spice Namasté who said: “HyGenikx has proven what it can do for us – keeping the air and surfaces clean, pure and fresh, controlling odours and providing extra reassurance for customers so they can relax and enjoy their meal knowing that we are leaving nothing to chance to make our restaurant Covid-secure.” Nick Falco Product & Technical Director at Mechline explains how the trials at Campden BRI worked: “Trials were conducted within the Campden BRI aerobiology laboratory to determine the efficacy of HyGenikx towards airborne Phi6 a recognised SARS-CoV-2 Surrogate (the coronavirus that causes COVID-19). Phi6 was nebulised into an aerobiology test chamber to

represent heavily contaminated air. Air samples were then taken every 20 minutes for a period of 3 hours, to determine levels of Phi6.” As we move into the winter months it is essential to the whole economy that we keep the doors of business open. Unfortunately, physically keeping the doors and windows open is not so great when it comes to customer comfort and sustainability. Indoor air quality, however, is a primary driver when it comes to the transmission of the Coronavirus between people.

Cyrus Todiwala, OBE DL added: “I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend HyGenikx to other foodservice or hospitality businesses as it is the ideal complement to manual cleaning. It helps to protect customers and staff, whilst extending the shelf life of fresh produce.” ** *For more information on the HyGenikx testing at Campden BRI visit: info. mechline.com/hygenikx-testing **For more information on the ALS fresh food shelf life study click here to download the PDF.

I

ndependent trials conducted by Campden BRI have confirmed that the HyGenikx air and sur face sanitisation system, from UK manufacturer Mechline Developments is effective at removing airborne Coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2 which causes Covid-19. THINK DESIGN

THINK HOMAPAL Over the years, hardly any other material has proven its worth in interior design to the extent in which the laminate has done. Looks, feel and function are combined to get the interplay of elements into all-embracing spatial concepts in a way that couldnt be more natural

Above all, it has always been the genuine- metal coated laminates and magnetic boards that are associated with the HOMAPAL name. Yet behind the scenes in Herzberg, many more variations of this modern material are created and produced.

It provides architects, carpenters and joiners in furniture-making and interior designs with the basis for producing the last word in creative design - in doctors' surgeries, bars, hotels, clubs and restaurants, on cruise ships and in shop fitting.

Exodus of 25-40 year-olds puts emphasis on younger workers The changing shape of the hospitality workforce has been revealed in new research from workforce management app, Deputy.

T

he Rebuilding Hospitality: The Changing Shape of the UK Workforce report reveals that nearly a quarter of a million workers aged 25-40 (Millennials) are estimated to have left the industry between December 2019 and October 2021. This has accelerated a trend of replacing these workers with under 25s (Gen Z) and the need for training and development to address lost knowledge and management capability. Conducted by independent economist Shashi Karunanethy, the research analysed 1,528,542 shifts from Deputy’s rostering systems worked by more than 14,000 UK hospitality workers in the past 22 months. Examining bars & pubs, accommodation, cafes & coffee shops, fast food & takeaways, and restaurants – it reveals a significant shift in industry staffing.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

The proportion of Millennials working in the sector has declined from 49% to 42%, equating to a loss of around 210,000 workers. At the same time, the proportion of workers from Gen Z has risen by 5%, which equates to around 150,000 workers.

24

On the transition, Shashi Karunanethy, said: “Half a year since Covid restrictions began to ease, hospitality employment levels are still well below pre-pandemic levels. They’ve lost a huge proportion of their workforce and are more reliant on young staff than ever before. “Looking at the Millennial age group, it’s understandable that some of those with young families and with more bills to pay may have moved into roles that flourished during lockdowns, such as supermarket work and delivery driving. We also lost a huge number of Millennial workers

who originated from outside of the UK, due to the timing of Covid and Brexit. Many of them worked in the restaurant, hotel and pub sectors in the UK and they simply haven’t returned since the Covid restrictions eased.” According to the report, the exodus of those aged 25 to 40 and growth in those 24 and under could be seen across: •

• • •

Fast food & takeaways (Gen Z grew from 26% to 38% of the workforce, Millennials declined from 51% to 43%) Bars & pubs (Gen Z grew from 31% to 35%, Millennials declined from 51% to 48%) Accommodation (Gen Z grew from 26% to 29%, Millennials declined from 45% to 41% Cafes & coffee shops (Gen Z grew from 31% to 33%, Millennials declined from 55% to 50%)

David Kelly, General Manager for EMEA at Deputy added: “In the long term, the surge in young people joining the industry is really good news for the future. However, right now, it’s a particularly testing time for business owners and managers who are already grappling with supply-chain disruption, utility cost inflation, VAT rises to come in April, caps on business relief rates, and staff shortages. Many business owners are having to vary their opening hours in line with staff availability. Managing that process is a huge challenge, even with a staff of industry veterans, let alone new starters. Upskilling the next generation of staff will be vital to long-term success.” The report highlights a number of considerations and recommendations for hospitality businesses to help them navigate the new hospitality landscape:

Focus on aptitude and attitude rather than experience when recruiting

Bringing young people into the workforce is crucial for a successful recovery to take place. There are over half a million unemployed or under-employed young people (16-24) in the UK. •

Offer more flexibility / family-friendly working patterns

There is a major opportunity to employ and promote experienced workers through the provision of more flexible and predictable working hours. Forward thinking employers have an opportunity to offer a range of working patterns such as ‘some time’, ‘part time’, ‘full time’ and ‘any time’ to appeal to a variety of potential workers. •

Use technology to automate some tasks

Allow staff to focus on delivering great customer experience by using technologies like online booking, automated check-in and check-out, ordering and payment apps and selfserve kiosks. Streamline customer booking, ordering and payment and automate mundane staff management such as building a rota, tracking time and error free payroll. By implementing these technologies forward thinking hospitality businesses can focus scarce staff resources on delivering the best customer experience. •

A reason to be optimistic

Accommodation and food is forecast to be the largest contributor of future jobs in the UK over the next 5 years. The industry is projected to support over 180,000 new jobs over the next 5 years or a quarter of total new jobs by 2024.

the convenience of gas with easy remote-control operation. They have all-year-round use and are suitable for chilly autumn days and cool summer evenings. Their balanced flue system offers flexibility of installation, as they require no chimney and only need proximity to an outside facing wall. This enables them to be installed in the living space, bedroom or bathroom subject to the design of each individual suite.

DRU Fires, in partnership with leading Cornwall fireplace dealer Kernow Fires, has supplied five DRU Polo balanced flue gas stoves for the new beach lofts at one of Cornwall’s leading hotels.

atergate Bay Hotel on the north coast of Cornwall, originally designed to a be a railway terminus hotel, has been developed over the last 20 years into an inclusive year-round destination. Its spectacular clifftop setting and location just a short hop from Cornwall Airport Newquay makes it a primary choice for travellers from all corners of the UK and beyond. The recent closure of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant on the site

paved the way for the £1.4 million development of the seven new beach lofts by contractors GSI and interior designers Dynargh Design, right above the beach. Described as ‘surf-in surf-out’ accommodation, the lofts have floorto-ceiling windows with panoramic sea views. All have been designed to feel like modern city lofts, with warm textures and sustainable materials. High energy efficiency The DRU Polo gas stoves were chosen by Dynargh Design for their contemporary design, fitting in with the overall design and aesthetic of the beach lofts. In addition, they were selected for their A energy rating, 92% efficiency and

Impressive outlooks and sustainability Kernow Fires owner Simon Breckon commented: “We’re pleased to have contributed to the success of the beach lofts and have seen strong growth in Cornwall’s domestic and commercial fireplace markets this year.” Watergate Bay Hotel CEO Will Ashworth said: “The beach lofts are our best rooms. They are sized very generously and the interior design represents our new approach to contemporary Cornish beach living.” Dynargh Design director Matt Hulme said: “The lofts have some of the most impressive outlooks of any hotel in Cornwall. But the interiors also needed to have enough appeal in the winter, when it’s dark at 5pm, that it feels warm, natural and enticing.” Sustainability was also an important factor in the design. “Getting active in the beautiful natural environment is at the heart of the Watergate Bay experience, and we’re committed to minimising the environmental impact of our design choices,” adds Will Ashworth. Round the Woods C

reating bedtimes your guests will remember for all the right reasons doesn’t happen by accident. Not only do you need to create a relaxing environment, but you also need to provide well-made beds, created with comfort in mind. We spoke to Kate from Round the Woods, a Glamping paradise in rural Norfolk, about being a Soak&Sleep wholesale customer. Read on to find out how she makes sure her customers have the ‘best night’s sleep ever’ to keep those 5-star reviews rolling in.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

You’ve been a Soak&Sleep customer for some time now, why did you first choose to use their products?

30

We’ve used Soak&Sleep since 2015 when we first set up our glamping business. We wanted to give our guests as comfy a bed as possible and knew the best place to start was with the mattress. So many people have terrible mattresses at home, and we wanted to give them a real treat. We researched and investigated the different options and read SO many reviews before finally choosing Soak&Sleep, who offered expert advice to help us make the right choice. We were delighted with the mattresses they recommended, so then invested in their Hungarian

Goose Down duvets and pillows and their 600 thread count bedlinen, and honestly couldn’t be happier, and nor could our guests! So, why do you keep using Soak&Sleep products? It’s not just about their products, they offer outstanding service. Being a trade customer means we get some real advantages such as a discount, a dedicated wholesale contact and speedy delivery. They really go out of their way to help you too. A few years ago, we were unlucky enough to have an entire bed stolen from one of our yurts. We had guests arriving the following day, and needless to say it felt like a complete disaster. However, we got on the phone to Soak&Sleep and they were able to send us everything we needed in time for the next guests to arrive, who were none the wiser. The Soak&Sleep team really saved our bacon! Do you have any favourites? I love the 600 thread count Egyptian Cotton bedlinen. Our guests often comment on how luxurious it feels and it’s also incredibly durable. Even after six years of being in business, we’ve only had to replace bedlinen that guests have stained; none of our original bedlinen looks old or worn in the slightest.

We also use the All-Seasons Hungarian Goose Down duvets and matching pillows – they feel so soft and snuggly and keep our guests warm no matter what the weather’s doing outside. You mentioned your guests love the products, can you tell us more? Yes, they really do! We’ve had several guests place orders for Soak&Sleep bedding ready to arrive for them when they get home, because they’ve loved sleeping in our beds so much. We love it when our guests tell us how comfortable they found our beds and leave us feeling happy and refreshed. As someone who’s clearly making their guests very happy, could you let us in on your secrets for a perfect bedroom? Of course! First, get your mattress right. We use King Size mattresses with a pillow top. We then increase the comfort factor by adding a topper too. Not only does that make the bed feel even softer, but it helps keep guests extra cosy. Top quality cotton sheets in a high thread count make an enormous difference, especially if they’re beautifully ironed. And goose down duvets and pillows feel like a real treat. They’re light, lofty and warm and really enhance the entire bedtime experience.

Even better bedtimes

Why premium bedding fills and bed linen fabrics make all the difference to your guest experience.

N

ot all bedding is created equal. As tempting as it may be to reach for the best-looking deal, choosing premium quality fills and fabrics can make a substantial difference to the way your beds feel and perform. But it can be difficult to know how premium quality products justify their higher price. Here’s the detail behind three such fabrics and fills.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Egyptian Cotton

32

Egyptian Cotton is a dream in more than one way. From the appearance of a freshly made bed to the smoothness of the fabric, Egyptian Cotton bed linen quickly tells guests that they’re in an establishment of quality. But what is it about Egyptian Cotton that makes it so special? Egyptian Cotton’s special status is due to a combination of factors, which is why real Egyptian Cotton

is certified for reassurance. For one, the species of cotton used to grow Egyptian Cotton creates extra long, extra strong fibres (known as staples), which in turn creates a much smoother, stronger yarn. The climate around the fertile Nile delta is another factor and makes the cotton grow more strongly, helping contribute towards its luxurious characteristics. What’s more, top quality Egyptian cotton is made from combed yarns. Combing a yarn removes the shorter, loose fibres before weaving, and this adds to the sensuous smoothness that Egyptian cotton bedlinen is renowned for. Of course, the raw material is only part of the story. The way it is woven into a fabric and finished into bed linen is also essential. Higher thread count fabrics made with a high quality Egyptian cotton yarn are beautifully soft, smooth and durable, with a luxurious drape on the bed.

Soak&Sleep’s 600 thread count bed linen is made with certified Egyptian Cotton. The certification is reassurance that you have chosen genuine Egyptian cotton that is handpicked and scientifically analysed for purity before being spun and woven. It has a sateen weave that feels extra smooth and soft against the skin with a slight sheen to it. Not only does it look and feel special, but because it is a natural fibre, the cotton will help your guests sleep more comfortably. That’s because cotton is breathable and helps control your temperature while sleeping. Your guests wake up feeling fresh and rested, ready to enjoy the rest of their break with you. Down filled duvets & pillows There’s no getting away from the fact that a down filled duvet and pillow is a real guest-pleaser.

The best quality down comes from birds bred in cold climates such as Northern Europe. Their down is very insulating, helping defend the birds from icy winter temperatures. This means their down clusters grow bigger making it a luxurious choice for loftier, warmer bedding. But location isn’t the only factor that contributes to quality down.

They are made with 90% Hungarian Goose Down which is ethically sourced. The generous clusters of goose down hold warm air for extra comfort, all wrapped up in a smooth 280 thread count cotton. Because of the way the down has been cleaned – using thermal water from a certified spring, it is even loftier and cleaner than down that is washed in cold water, which is typical of most down. The Hungarian Goose Down range is so clean that it’s considered hypoallergenic, making it ideal for even sensitive sleepers. What’s more, because of the incredible care with which Soak&Sleep’s Hungarian Goose Down pillows and duvets are made, they last beautifully too. The duvets come with a 15year guarantee and the pillows have a 5-year guarantee, making them excellent value in the longer term. Premium microfibre Down-filled bedding isn’t for everyone. But that doesn’t mean your guests have to miss out on a luxurious night’s sleep. Modern advances in technology mean some synthetic fill duvets and pillows provide a convincing

Choosing pillows and duvets that are DownPass, RDS or EDFA certified confirms that the feather and down in your bedding has been ethically sourced, something many guests will care deeply about. The Hungarian Goose Down pillows and duvets from Soak&Sleep are a perfect example of high quality downfilled bedding.

alternative to feather and down bedding. Light, lofty and washable, premium microfibre is an adaptable fill that creates bedding which can be easily washed. This makes it perfect for those with severe allergies and children’s beds. The lack of animal-derived fibres also makes microfibre a great choice for egans. The Soak&Sleep range of microfibre bedding is made with a blown microfibre to create a light and silky fill which feels deceptively like a down-filled duvet or pillow The Soak&Sleep Soft as Down Microfibre range has been made with a blend of two microfibres for a uniquely squishy, soft and warm fill that guests love. Worth Knowing All Soak&Sleep products come with a guarantee – if you’re not happy with your products, we’ll replace them free of charge or refund you. Hotelier & Hospitality Design

Pillows filled with down and feather are dreamily soft with good head and neck support. Many pillows have a supportive feather-rich core surrounded by down for softness. In contrast, down-filled duvets are lofty, light and wonderfully insulative for a cosy night’s sleep. The higher the percentage of down, the lighter and loftier you can expect the duvet to feel.

London Hilton Bankside Review – As we arrived on Great Suffolk Street it was a cold dark afternoon in London

M

y attention was immediately drawn to the florescent beam coming from the Hilton Bankside hotel. Outside the hotel was a floral draped sign reading “Bankside” this was accompanied by cool neon lights in the quirky entrance. Located near Southwark train station and a stones thrown from the Tate Modern. The Hilton Bankside is also extremely close to Waterloo. Although, there is no need to leave the vicinity as to the left of the front desk the Distillery bar was packed with people and you could sense a good time was to be had during your stay. I felt an instant warmth within the hotel lobby. The atmosphere was vibrant and we were greeted by incredibly friendly faces behind the front desk (Along with a complementary glass of Prosecco & sweets!) We stayed in one of the hotels junior suits. It was spacious, comfortable and extremely cosy. I was surprised to learn there are almost 300 rooms along with a vegan suite.

Hotelier & Hospitality Design

When we arrived on the 6th floor our view of the street was stunning. It was a busy Saturday afternoon and although you couldn’t hear a sound the view of people enjoying their weekend was great.

34

Now it was time to settle down and relax. The softness of the bed was unparalleled. It was after around two hours of travelling and very much welcomed. One of life’s simple but great pleasures is quality of a hotel’s mattress and we were not disappointed. In truth, I could have fallen asleep instantly. However an enjoyable night in the distillery bar was ahead so it was time to get ready. The shower and bathroom have slated tiles, beautiful mirrors and

concrete slab flooring. There is plenty of room to get organised and the room service is sharp in its delivery of drinks & snacks. I must say the care and attention showed by each staff member was amazing. Many years ago the site was home to an oil distillery and has kept its industrial theme throughout without compromising luxury. The bar “The Distillery” gets its name sake from the above and we enjoyed an amazing meal and drinks that

evening. There is also the option to dine in the OXBO. This is where we had our breakfast the following say which was fantastic! Plenty of options to cater for all from a full range of full English to continental cuisine. When planning your next trip to England capital. The Hilton Bankside is a must visit. Brand upgrade: Union Investment brings Hilton to Innsbruck/Austria Partners investing EUR 4 million in major refurbishment of former Ramada hotel around EUR 4 million in upgrading the hotel from midscale to upscale.

The hotel is expected to open on 15 December – in a transitional phase as an independent hotel and will then be fully refurbished during ongoing operation. Once the refurbishment work has been completed, the hotel will be positioned in the market under the Hilton Garden Inn Innsbruck brand. Hilton will enter into a franchise agreement with the HR Group for the hotel.

“Signing this follow-on lease gives us the opportunity to expand our strategic partnership with Hilton and the HR Group. We’re delighted to have found a brand that is a perfect fit with Innsbruck and our property,” said Martin Schaller, head of Asset Management Hospitality at Union Investment. “Rebranding the hotel as a Hilton Garden Inn provides access to strong distribution channels, thus ensuring sustained returns and the future viability of the property.”

The architecturally striking property has been held by open-ended real estate fund immofonds 1 since 2015. The fund is marketed solely in Austria. Union Investment and Hilton are jointly investing

The refurbishment work is due to be completed over the next 12 to 24 months. All 159 guest rooms and bathrooms will be upgraded, as will the corridors, public areas such as the lobby, restaurant and bar, and also the wellness and conference facilities. The standard of fittings and furnishings in the hotel will be significantly improved overall.

“The conclusion of this agreement underlines our established partnership with Union Investment. The new addition to the portfolio marks the HR Group’s entry into the Austrian hotel market and is our first hotel under the Hilton brand,” said Markus Lewe, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Lodging Division of the HR Group. “This is a milestone for the company and we are pleased to have achieved it with such a promising project and expert partners.” Last year, the HR Group took over management of the Pullman Schweizerhof Berlin, another property in Union Investment’s hotel portfolio. The HR Group also manages two more of Union Investment’s hotels, in Frankfurt and Eschborn. Hilton currently operates more than 900 hotels under the Hilton Garden Inn brand around the world. Union Investment is already active in Seattle with a Hilton Garden Inn branded hotel. Union Investment is aiming to support the further expansion of Hilton through its properties in strong business and leisure locations in Europe and America.

s part of a rebranding and extensive refurbishment programme, the former Hotel Ramada Innsbruck Tivoli is being significantly upgraded and repositioned in the Innsbruck hotel market. Union Investment has signed a long-term lease for 30 years with German hotel operating company HR Group. The hotel has been vacant since 31 July following expiry of the lease with the former tenant.
