Luxurious brand-new coastal resort opening May 2019 on the Isle of Wight

Orchard Street completes £38 million acquisition of two hotels in Newcastle Orchard Street Investment Management (‘Orchard Street’), the specialist commercial property investment manager, has completed the acquisition of two hotel investments in Newcastle City Centre from Union Property Development Ltd. for a total price of £38 million. The transaction, made on behalf of St James’s Place UK Plc, comprises the acquisition of the Travelodge Quayside hotel and the forward funding of a Melia hotel development. The combined purchase price reflects a net initial yield of 4.50%. The Melia development is due for completion in the summer of 2020 and will comprise a modern purpose-built hotel with 161 rooms across seven floors. The hotel will also contain a restaurant, bar, fitness suite and conference facilities. The asset, to be operated by Melia’s contemporary INNSIDE brand, has been pre-let for a term of 25 years and will be subject to 5-yearly inflation-linked rent reviews.

The adjacent Travelodge Quayside hotel opened in November 2017 and comprises a 120-room hotel across five floors, a restaurant and bar. Travelodge pre-let the entire building for a term of 25 years, with 5-yearly inflation-linked rent reviews. There are 43 underground car spaces that will be shared with the Melia hotel.

The two freehold properties occupy a prominent position fronting Newcastle’s Quayside, close to the Tyne Bridge and with views across the River Tyne towards Gateshead. The surrounding area has benefited from significant investment in recent years, with the
nearby Stephenson Quarter undergoing a £200m mixed-use regeneration scheme and the Quayside providing a strong mix of leisure and commercial amenities. The hotels are exceptionally well-connected to the city’s main attractions, while Newcastle Central Station is within a five-minute walk and Newcastle’s renowned nightlife hub, ‘The Bigg Market’, within a 15-minute walk. Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa Showcases Contemporary Design Following £10m Redevelopment Nestled in the heart of the Lake District’s beautiful Borrowdale valley, Lodore Falls Hotel & Spa is excited to share the luxury design details of its multi-millionpound redevelopment, including a new state-of-the-art spa and 18 new Spa Suites. The purpose, style and mood of the spa according to each room’s function have been carefully considered. Furnishings and light fixtures by Tom Dixon and Moooi help blend streamlined Scandinavian style and British countryside sophistication.
Guests are welcomed into the spa reception by stylish upholstered furniture, designed by Tom Dixon and Graham and Green, boasting custom-made velvets, tweeds and dobby weaves, showcasing the best of elegant British design. Guests feel the harnessing power of nature as the earthy hues of the spa bring the outside in. The Khaki/Aqua/ Chartreuse colour pallete is intended to compliment the environment whilst remaining fresh and contemporary.
The overall ambience of the spa’s Champagne Bar is a moody, Scandinavian revival, reflected through its elegant light fixtures exclusively designed by George Cawardine for Anglepoise, Chen Bikovski for Compagnie and Terence Woodgate. The upholstery is all bespoke leather and fabric sourced from Skai, Warwick, Osborne and Little and Casamance. Soft furnishings have been meticulously chosen to entice spa goers to truly relax into their depths, leaving behind the stresses and strains of everyday life.
The spa’s Relaxation Room bridges the gap between interior and exterior through its floor to ceiling windows that fill the room with natural light and offer guests breath-taking panoramic views over the stunning fells, forest and lake. This room is designed to be more soothing and restful, with Anthracite panelling, Faux Shagreen ceiling and grey carpet, lifted by gleaming copper wall lights and plush loungers. The Relaxation Room loungers are bespoke for the spa, upholstered in Osborne and Little Velvet, complete with a custom-made cushion in reversible fabric from Zinc Textiles
The treatment rooms complete the Scandinavian revival and Nordic retreat feel. Planners give green light for Dexter Moren Associates’ Bicester Heritage Hotel Bicester Heritage’s ambition to become the number one leisure destination for automotive fans has moved into pole position with the granting of planning permission for a new hotel, designed by award-winning hotel architects and interior designers Dexter Moren Associates. Situated on a former RAF base in the heart of Motorsport Valley, a stone’s throw from numerous Formula One teams and the Silverstone Circuit, the approved scheme will feature a 252-room hotel, 92-unit aparthotel, restaurant, leisure facilities and conference centre.

The hotel design, granted unanimous approval by Cherwell District Council last week, is inspired by RAF Bicester’s rich heritage, offering a modern interpretation of the form of adjoining listed hangars and featuring a signature entrance atrium designed around the display of classic motor vehicles.

The design objective has been to respond in a contemporary manner to the site’s unique past, drawing inspiration from its historic position at the forefront of aviation, engineering, and innovation while complementing the existing period buildings. The elevations take inspiration from the listed aircraft hangers within Bicester Heritage, whilst the metal-clad curved façade references the sinuous line of a classic car. Designed by Carney Logan Burke Architects, Jackson Hole’s Newest Hotel Caldera House Combines the Golden Age of Skiing with Modern Design Elements Located in the heart of Teton Village, the 5-star ski club was designed as a retreat for nature lovers and winter sports enthusiasts drawn to the bustling ski scene at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. Combining a casual contemporary style, with subtle details from the American West, local firm Carney Logan Burke Architects (CLB) designed the 70,000 square-foot-building, as well as the interiors of six of the eight luxury condominiums. Caldera House consists of six levels, with a sleek exterior comprising of glass, wood paneling and regionally-sourced stone, combined with black steel accents and copper panels. Private and public spaces include an in-house gear shop, gym, spa, a private lounge and bar, the Old Yellowstone Garage restaurant, as well as a casual grab-and-go spot, designed to connect visitors with the local community. CLB worked with Commune Design on the public spaces, including the reception, restaurant, and bar, to integrate these interior spaces into the overall design scheme.

CLB did the interior design of two private 5,000-square-foot owners’ condominiums and four 2,000-square-foot hotel units. Taking their cue from the idea of a modern cabin feel, each of these residences exude mountain chic. One of the private suites is styled with a sense of tradition, featuring leather and equestrian accents, and the other a more contemporary aesthetic with a nod to regional style. Occupying the upper floors, both offer views of both the mountain and the ski village, with sliding doors that open onto decks where visitors can take in the breathtaking views.

Macdonald Hotels & Resorts gets in bed with Zonal Macdonald Hotels & Resorts has been serving up award winning hospitality to its guests since 1990, when the first hotel was opened in Aberdeenshire by Donald Macdonald and colleagues. Today, it is the UK’s largest privately owned hotel group, operating 53 hotels throughout the UK, Ireland, Portugal and Spain, employing over 4,000 staff and servicing in excess of 4,500 hotel rooms. But with expansion also comes challenges in terms of keeping track of operating costs. In the past, this took weeks of planning but now, we can do it in minutes,” says Stuart.
Speeding Up Service
A great example of where Zonal technology is making its mark is Macdonald’s Berystede hotel in Ascot. A favourite with horse racing fans from across the world, the hotel’s bar is a hotbed of activity during race week, particularly Ladies Day, and in the past has required runners to keep orders flowing from the outside seating area to the tills and kitchen. Not only is speed of service an issue but the system was open to human error. With Zonal technology, iServe means orders can be quickly taken at the table, which directly feeds into EPoS, which in turn sends the order directly to the kitchen. Stuart explains: “Ascot is our busiest time of year at Berystede. Zonal technology has gone a long way to
helping our staff to take more orders, while reducing mistakes and speeding up service. Thanks to Zonal technology we are delivering a ‘thoroughbred’ service that lives up to the Ascot experience!” Ultimately, it’s the business intelligence that Stuart and his colleagues can now access that will help Macdonald Hotels continue to expand effectively and efficiently. Macdonald’s can quickly access insight data from Aztec’s Dimensions reporting module that has been designed with the operator in mind, offering the functionality to aggregate with external platforms, such as PMS, payroll systems, budgets and spreadsheets, to create bespoke, real-time data analysis. This flexibility allows the Macdonald team to compare various sources of data and gather a huge amount of insight, from bed to dining ratio, to top sellers and wastage percentages. Stuart sums it up: “We have gone from a dictated to, to a more collaborative approach. Feedback from staff has been excellent, as they had a say in the design and layout of the Aztec inteface, so the workflow is extremely intuitive. ach year global textiles giant, Vision Support Services host this annual awards incentive aimed at discovering exceptional interior design of hotels, restaurants, spas and bars around the world.
The 2018 Awards were launched back in May with brand new categories, judges and venues; all hoping to recognise the effort, style and flair from across the globe with seven categories; open to any hospitality establishment from around the world. The design competition, which began as the Hilden Style Awards back in 2013 originally aimed at independent bed and breakfasts around the UK, has seen over 100 entries this year featuring locations as far and wide as Rwanda, Tanzania, Bali and New Zealand.
Submissions were judged by a panel of hospitality and travel experts and the final three in each category were then whittled down to one overall winner in each category.

Comprising of just six forest villas, Bisate Lodge, situated next to Rwanda’s renowned Volcanoes National Park, the 27-hectare Bisate Lodge won the award for ‘Innovative New Venue’ and judges commented: “Original, exciting and a positive step towards protecting the landscape. Simply stunning.”

The hospitality industry has worried about allergens in food for some time, and several shocking recent cases have brought the topic to the forefront of public concern.

hile food labelling is being tightened following the tragedy, UK bars, restaurants and food outlets are already working hard to identify potential areas of risk. An independent restaurant in the heart of Leicester is flying high after picking up a hat-trick of accolades. The White Peacock Restaurant was recently crowned with having the best formal dining experience at the glittering award ceremony for the annual Leicestershire Tourism & Hospitality Awards.

January Furniture Show Along with requests for more beds, more accessories and more lighting at the January Furniture Show (JFS), the organisers also received many requests for companies who supply contract furniture and furnishings to be identified.

he organisers listened and acted. JFS in 2019, which takes place at the NEC in Birmingham from 20th23rd January 2019, will introduce its new Contract Trail. It is the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle to fulfil all of the major requests received from visitors and it will identify all of the 150+ exhibitors who either regularly, or occasionally supply contract orders. On arrival at the show visitors will be able to collect a handy fold out map which identifies the contract supplying companies in each hall. The Contract Trail will also be available on the JFS website in advance of the show, making it easy for buyers to plan their stand visits in advance. Show Director Cleere Scammell said of the Contract Trail, “It is important that we
give our buying visitors as much useful information as is feasible, to make their visiting time at JFS as productive as possible. Adding the Contract Trail was an easy decision given the number of requests we received for the information - and given the large number of contract suppliers that we have among our exhibitors.� Across the board in upholstery, cabinet, beds, lighting and accessories there are both UK and International suppliers who are fully apprised of the particular requirements of supplying contract and interior design orders. Many of the main contract suppliers are also leading names in the UK furniture industry including Duresta, Kingstown, Whitemeadow, Ashley Manor, Firstlight Products, The Libra Company and Silentnight. Leading international companies including
Weimann, ALF UNO S.p.a. and Hartman are also on the Contract Trail list. The other new initiatives introduced at JFS in response to visitor requests are LIGHT, Beds at JFS and there will be 20% more space for accessories. LIGHT the new lighting sector features over 20 lighting companies showing everything from garden lanterns to futuristic LED lights. BEDS at JFS brings together the largest number of bed companies ever seen at the show, and finally the increase in space for accessories sees over 25 new exhibitors and several regular exhibitors taking extra space to show their abundant collections. BPCA sets out flight path to effective bird management for the hospitality sector Introducing effective bird management procedures can present challenges for the hospitality sector, but the public health issues mean it is a matter that cannot be ignored. Of particular concern for hospitality environments is the feral pigeon, which is very common and found in all areas of the UK. Feral pigeons can have a real impact on the look and feel of a building and its surrounding environment - a matter of concern in an industry where first impressions count.

This can include the visual effects and associations with poor hygiene created by their fouling. The noise they generate is another disruption.

These are problems enough for hospitality environments. However, the most pressing issue is one of safety. Feral pigeons can harbour a large variety of diseases and insects on the body and in their nests, and fouling presents public health concerns. There is also the health and safety implications of slips and trips caused by their droppings to consider.
Pigeon problems Pigeons carry a variety of diseases such as Ornithosis, Listeria and E-coli. These can be transmitted to humans from the droppings, and also from the birds themselves.
When dry, pigeon droppings can also become airborne in small particles, which can lead to respiratory complaints such as Ornithosis (also known as Psittacosis). Pigeon droppings are acidic and can corrode and erode metals, stonework and brickwork. Nesting materials birds use can also block chimneys, flues and guttering, causing possible issues with carbon monoxide and damage to buildings as water overflows from blocked gutters. Furthermore, pigeons and their nests can support parasites such as mites, ticks, fleas and beetles.
Contractor expertise BPCA membership includes pest management professionals with expertise in bird control to help address the problem. They are familiar with environmental, social and legal issues, one of which is the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Prevention is of course much more effective in protecting against pest issues, and in the case of nuisance birds such as pigeons and gulls, proven techniques centred around proofing and dispersal help to mitigate and avoid issues for local communities.
Sometimes bird management work can also involve working at height, so companies offering this service must compliant with the relevant health and safety requirements. This is coupled with insight into bird behaviour, together with an understanding of the actions that need to be taken to advise on contributory factors, such as waste management and building maintenance. BPCA member John Dickson, of NBC Environment, specialises in bird management. He said: “The legislative nuances relating to birds are highly complex, and it is advisable to commission a survey from an experienced bird expert. “They can put a mitigation plan in place to ensure operations are approved and legal, which will provide auditable evidence safeguarding your site.”

Low pressure includes daytime perching and sunbaking, while medium relates to night roosting and access to natural food sources. High pressure relates to nesting and access to artificial food sources. Approaches are usually categorised by the level of pressure encountered in a particular environment. Michelin Star Chef Peter Joseph opens first restaurant with KAI Interiors KAI Interiors were approached by Michelin starred chef Peter Joseph to design his first solo venture restaurant. Taking a lead from the concept of sharing food and swapping stories, essences of Indian stories and fables have been scattered around the restaurant, this led to the name ‘Kahani’ meaning stories in Hindi. Set in the beautiful Sloane square near to Cadogan Hall you will discover a deep green set of double doors nestled into the classic architecture of Wilbraham Place.

As you enter, you see a beautiful upholstered wall that is made of soft blush, woven leather, this leads guests down the stairs. Indian antiquities and Kavaad [Indian story boxes] line the steps. You pass a warm mustard velvet curtained private dining room that is completely based on India’s national bird, the peacock. It’s a luxurious room in deep blues and greens. A large deep blue leather table top with brass trim, fills the room. An elegant slim brass chandelier sits above creating a cosy environment in which guests can enjoy a unique experience with Kahani’s best wines and culinary delights. The ceiling is filled with an imprint of millions of miniscule beads laid out in an elegant weaving pattern. The chairs are deep blue velvet with a woven leather backing. Bespoke wallpaper, beautifully hand drawn by the team at Lyons and Tigers Creative Agency hangs as a backdrop to the room. The private
room overlooks the main restaurant space with a balcony style mezzanine level. From above you might be able to notice the K within the flooring. The timber floors are laid in different angles with brass trims to make out a K for Kahani. The back wall of the restaurant space is home to the extensive wine cellar, exposed through a huge wall of glass for guests to enjoy. As you go down the stairs further, you enter into the main restaurant that opens out to a double height ceiling with beautiful bespoke, suede ribbon chandeliers. On the left there is one of KAI’s favourite features, a beautiful mosaic wall. This involved mixing a special render to obtain the exact colour, then meticulously hand placing the small, square mosaic tiles piece by piece into a pattern that was taken from Indian architecture. Sat in line with the mosaic wall is beautiful dusty teal velvet seating embellished with Indian embroidered ribbon. The room dividers give privacy to the bar area with a peacock feather embossed glass and timber panel. Sat in the back corner is the original
fireplace with cosy armchairs and a traditional Indian carved table. Somewhere to relax after a meal and enjoy one of the many whiskeys or cognacs they have to offer. KAI spoke to us more about the project: ‘Peter’s food is amazing, it’s so colourful and we had to think about how it would look on the table. The edge of the tables were etched with
a henna pattern which linked with the bespoke henna style wallpaper we had hand drawn by Lyons and Tigers Creative Agency. If you look closely you can follow several fables within the wallpaper. We’ve used warm colours in the upholstery that don’t detract and kept the walls quite neutral, we wanted to ensure hints of India enrich the space.’
Slightly raised from the main restaurant floor is one of the more private dining nooks. It is filled with a delicate silk wallpaper with multi-coloured sari threads running through it. Rich blush-terracotta velvets adorn the fixed seating and a bamboo edge table. The bar, meanwhile, was modelled on Chand Baori, which is a beautiful step well of 3,500 steps built over a thousand years ago in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Textured wallpapers are a back drop to the brass cantilevered steps that appear to be floating whilst displaying the premium alcohol offering.

To create this innovative new product, Tarkett sources recycled PVB, a non-PVC and phthalatefree resin used to help prevent windscreens from shattering. It is recovered from end-of-life vehicles or safety glass from buildings, before being integrated into the product. The product formula includes 24% recycled PVB, 11% bioplastic and 49% chalk, a mineral found in abundance in nature. Not only is iD Revolution’s product composition sustainable but the manufacturing process also respects the earth’s natural capital: 99% of the water used during the production is recycled, and 50% of the electricity needed comes from renewable sources, while the remaining 50% are offset, via carbon credits through a project supporting biodiversity in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. In addition, iD Revolution is free from phthalate and solvents, and has been designed with an ultralow level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)1, thus contributing to optimal indoor air quality and healthy spaces.
Closing the Loop To close the loop, the product itself is 100% recyclable. iD Revolution can once again be re-used at the end-of-life stage. Each lighting piece is sealed into the ceiling for a flush finish. The metal frame surrounding the domes are finished to match the Corian ceiling and complemented by a matt acrylic vacuum formed diffuser. Punctuating the edge are gloss black bespoke downlights that project pools of light below and replicate shafts of daylight pouring into the space.
The luminaires are individually controllable and project a dynamic white light and RGB effect across the surface. Pixelbased colour change effects can be turned on for events, providing the space with further flexibility.

he project took six months to totally complete with the design heavily influenced by Birmingham’s canals and city centre landmarks. The guest rooms and public areas all feature decorative accents, vivid murals and design touches that showcase the local neighbourhood heritage and unique architecture. The four-star boutique hotel, which is located at the top of the iconic The Cube building, boasts flat screen Satellite TV’s, complimentary mini-bars, and invigorating rainfall showers in every room.
Hotel Indigo Birmingham Completes £1M Refurbishment
The £1m refurbishment of Hotel Indigo Birmingham is complete. The investment included a huge renovation of all 52 guest rooms including the reception and lobby areas.

The Grahamston, a new restaurant and bar located in the heart of Glasgow city centre, has opened its doors today following a £1.2 million transformation. Located within Radisson Blu on Argyle Street, the new dining and drinking experience is inspired by Grahamston, once a bustling village in the heart of the city, now a forgotten part of Glasgow’s history, buried deep below Glasgow Central station.
Through subtle visual, written and spoken cues, the story of the mysterious eighteenth-century village is brought to life. The interior has an opulent yet industrial feel, with the décor, the menu and the people each revealing small elements of the Grahamston story, while retaining the intrigue and mystery at the heart of the urban legend. A new piece of artwork inspired by the characters and buildings from Grahamston dominates the feature wall overlooking the bar.
The Grahamston Kitchen will feature a specially designed menu, featuring produce sourced from around Scotland. Developed by Executive Chef Stephen MacNiven, it will serve traditional Scottish food with an artisan twist. The new menu features an array of dishes celebrating Scottish cuisine such as the “Cock a Leekie” Terrine, Twice-Baked Isle of Mull Cheddar Soufflé and Apple and Cinnamon Cheesecake. As well as a large selection of beers, wines and spirits, the 82-metre

square bar will serve its own locally brewed craft beer, The Grahamston Ale, on draught, also boasts a whisky menu featuring 40 different expressions. The Grahamston snug will be available for private hire for parties of up to 36 people. Radisson Blu’s new General Manager, Hina Rubbani, said: “The Grahamston is perfect for anything from a working lunch to an evening cocktail, and provides the ideal place for our guests, locals and visitors to the city to come and discover more about one of Glasgow’s best kept secrets.

Whether enjoying a drink with colleagues, or a catch up with friends, it’s the ideal place to relax and unwind while taking in the very special character of this historic city.” The mysterious village of Grahamston lies beneath Glasgow Central station and has remained untouched since the 19th century. But as the industrial revolution took hold in the 1870s, the fate of Grahamston was sealed when work began on Glasgow Central station. Nearly one hundred and fifty years later, The Grahamston bar and kitchen is paying homage to this enigma from Glasgow’s forgotten past.
Radisson Blu worked closely with local historian Norrie Gilliland on the project, author of the only book written on the history of Grahamston; Glasgow’s Forgotten Village. He commented: “The story of Grahamston is undoubtedly a microcosm of Glasgow’s growth into a diverse, multi-cultural and internationally renowned city of the 21st century. Grahamston was first noted on maps of Glasgow around 1680 and grew over the next two hundred years from a row of thatched cottages to a commercial and industrial hub right at the heart of Victorian Glasgow. “Sadly, the village vanished beneath the foundations of Glasgow Central Station well over a century ago. No records of it exist in city archives and only a small glimpse of the mysterious pathways and tunnels can be seen from Hope Street. Now, the story of Grahamston has been brought to life, and I hope that locals and visitors to the city enjoy discovering more about this fascinating local legend.”

New Marco Pierre White Restaurant Launches at Holiday Inn Brentwood

Earlier this year LGH Hotels Management Ltd announced a new partnership with celebrity chef and restaurateur Marco Pierre White (MPW) with plans to open a Marco’s New York Italian branch in the Holiday Inn Brentwood at the end of the year.

Holiday Inn Brentwood celebrated the launch of the new Marco Pierre White restaurant on Thursday 6th December with Brentwood’s favourite couple James ‘Arg’ Argent and Gemma Collins attending. Arg celebrated his birthday at the event with a Freddie Mercury themed cake, dancing and performing his favourite rat-pack hits to guests. Arg’s celebrity entourage included fellow TOWIE stars Liam Gatsby and professional boxer Ohara Davies.

The new open lobby dining area at both locations includes a brand-new Marco’s New York Italian eatery, offering a mixture of Italian-inspired dishes and American classics such as fresh pasta, homemade pizza and ribs as well as their best-selling New York style cheesecake.

Accoya® selected for the latest Ivy Collection restaurant opening The Ivy Collection, a select group of upmarket restaurants, brasseries and cafes, has recently opened its latest restaurant – The Ivy in the Park, in Canada Square Park – London. The creative design was able to successfully combine quality with sustainability with the specification of world-leading, high-performance sustainable wood, Accoya® throughout the striking new build.

The new brasserie, opened to the public in mid – October 2018, was designed by esteemed architect William Conway of William Matthews Associates and, following a rigorous bid process, lead construction firm Wiehag Timber Construction were selected to build the latest eatery in the Ivy Collections’ portfolio. The new restaurant, with a two-level bar, restaurant and external dining area, is aptly positioned within one of Canary Wharf’s most sustainable areas, overlooking a vibrant green space for events.

The Ivy in the Park is constructed from glulam and cross-laminated timber: internal members are made from spruce, whilst external beams and columns are glulam Accoya®. The specification of Accoya® wood further extended to the rainscreen trellis which covers the external walls. For the Accoya® wood elements of the project, a total of 47 glulam beams, 42 glulam columns and 740m² of rainscreen trellis were required. Wiehag GmbH machined it into the glulam beams and columns
– alongside the trellis – and finished in the factory with a Remmers Aqua HSL 35 Grey Stain prior to installing on-site. Canary Wharf Group, who has overseen the largest urban regeneration project ever undertaken in Europe, wanted timber to be used for the external façade of this project, however they needed a low maintenance solution. Naturally, Accoya® wood was the ideal choice. The result is a building that juxtaposes itself from the cold metal and glass of Canary Wharf and offers a warm, wooden home to one of the most respected restaurant institutions in London, offering accessible, all-day dining in a relaxed, local setting. Accoya® wood is produced using Accsys’ proprietary acetylation process, which chemically alters the cell structure of the wood to

As part of the scheme, chefs and restaurant managers from each Valor hotel are now visiting or planning visits to their local ‘adopted’ primary schools to provide classes on all things food, to children aged eight and nine.
