04 Industry News & Shows Increasing numbers of architects say that personal connections are the best way to secure a job when starting out, a new survey from Reynaers at Home has found. This year’s survey of architects saw 41% of respondents citing attending university as most useful for their first architectural job, compared to 48% of respondents in the previous Reynaers at Home survey in 2013. However personal connections were cited by 28% of architects this year, opposed to just 14% in 2013. Work experience appears to have dropped slightly in importance, with only 23% of architects citing this as the most useful in securing their first architectural position, compared with 29% in 2013. In Reynaers at Home’s latest national survey of industry trends, architects also cited eagerness, determination, design skills and talent as useful attributes to get their first job. While an impressive 61% claim that they knew they wanted to be an architect from birth, the career choices for many initially started down entirely different paths. Pilot and footballer were the most commonly shared dream by architects when they were children, followed by artist. Other professions that captured the imagination of UK architects included rock stars, park wardens, bin men, spies, professional surfers and even a knight. Marketing Manager of Reynaers Rebecca Cope said: “The best way to get a job in architecture is from a university education, but our research shows that there are other key personality traits that may be required to get into architecture as a profession, such as a determination and strong self-belief.
developer-update.co.uk
“This year marks the 25th anniversary of Reynaers in the UK and we have a long history of education and training. We invest our time in a programme of university lectures throughout the year to help future architects and give them a taste of how we might be able to help with practical experience. The students we talk to can see how the theory works in practice and the programme helps to develop their understanding of contemporary window and door technology as they embark on their career in architecture.” If you would like to enquire about the presentation for your university, please contact Nicola Collenette at Mobas PR: nicola.collenette@mobas.com or 01223 841699. 06 Industry News & Shows Bristol hosts Danish-British urban planning summit Urban planning leaders convene in Bristol, 2015’s European Green Capital, for The Liveable City conference. The Liveable City exhibition and seminars runs from 19-20 November 2015 at various venues in Bristol. Speakers, chairpersons and organisations from the UK and Denmark will meet to discuss how planners, architects, businesses and local communities can play their part in the development of a dynamic, liveable city. Danish-British dialogue applies particularly to Bristol, as the city has forged a strong connection with the Danish capital Copenhagen – Bristol’s Green Capital predecessor and fellow frontrunner. The Liveable City provides the latest insight into how the two cities and countries inspire each other to find new ways in which cities can be made better places to live, work and play. Danish Ambassador to the UK, Claus Grube commented, “The best know-how and the brightest ideas must come together when creating green and people-friendly cities of the future. The UK and Denmark are leading the way by exchanging ideas and engaging in co-operations, which is especially true between Bristol and Copenhagen. I look forward to seeing the latest of what our countries’ most innovative stakeholders have to offer, and hope for even more partnerships in the years to come.” The two-day event features seminars on housing, heat, flooding, health and sustainability, and addresses the question of how to create beautiful cities with a more resilient economy, healthier residents and a better quality of life for everyone. Bristol provides a fitting venue for the Danish-British take on the matter.
BDP completes work at Thomas More Square BDP has recently completed a major £30m upgrade to the principal office building and public realm at Thomas More Square in London. Thomas More Square is a commercial development built originally in the 1980’s.
The upper office floors have also been refurbished to create grade A commercial space with brand new facilities throughout the building. Externally the public realm has been remodelled to include new access routes, raised levels, planting, seating and lighting.
It consists of a number of office buildings near St Katherine’s dock, and is connected by a large area of public space linking adjacent residential buildings with retail and public amenity.
A new client brand for the development was adopted for inclusion in a new signing scheme too.
The main reception area has been completely remodelled, and now incorporates a new double height stainless steel entrance portico, large reception with feature audio visual system, business lounge and coffee shop.
An interdisciplinary team from BDP, including landscape, interior and graphic design, lighting and architecture, was commissioned by Land Securities to work on the project.

Istanbul takes flight RMJM Istanbul has been shortlisted in a global competition to design the iconic 95m high Airport Traffic Control (ATC) Tower of Istanbul New Airport, due to open in 2018. Inspired by authentic symbols of Turkey, the competition saw applications from many renowned international design brands, including RMJM Istanbul. Sotiris Tsoulos, Managing Partner at RMJM Istanbul and his team were inspired by the seagulls of Istanbul and Turkey’s ancient pottery and textile industries. Sortiris says of their design for a building they regard as the absolute symbol of aviation industry, of travelling, of welcoming and of wishing good bye, “spirit of flying, body of moulding and skin of expression are the three architectural metaphors that create this ‘container and protector of life’. It was clear to us that this project had to be unique; this is the flag that will be raised to symbolise the new,
vibrant, global Turkey. As witnesses to this amazing transformation we aspire that this building be far more than an ATC Tower. Rather, we are designing a new symbol for this country, the pinnacle of our new landmark airport and providing that vital “Welcome to Turkey” moment.”
design will symbolically contribute a great deal to Istanbul New Airport, as well as becoming an important icon for the whole of Istanbul. We asked contestants to see inspiration from icons of Turkey.
Seagulls and the fluidity of the flying are expressed through the aerodynamic form of the structure that barely touches the ground, and which has a neck providing 360 visibility. The main body of the structure is more moulded than sculpted as a reminder of Turkey’s great pottery tradition, whilst the final element of RMJM Istanbul’s design is the detail of a loom in the form of a delicate horizontal layers of ‘woven skin’ around the building. “We are developing a unique project inspired by local architecture. That is why we have organised this competition, hoping that the Airport Traffic Control Tower

Freedom and functionality
An innovative process
Perforated metal from RMIG is often the choice for applications such as facade cladding and sun screens. With RMIG ImagePerf, it is possible to take all the advantages of conventional perforated metal one step further.
RMIG ImagePerf turns the metal surface into a projection screen or canvas where it is possible to use photographs, graphic designs, illustrations and other types of artwork on a large scale and is used in many different areas within residential, commercial and public architecture.
The carefully selected images (photographs, graphic designs, patterns and illustrations) are translated into a CAD drawing and subsequently checked, tested and approved. The details of the CAD drawing are then fed into to a programme for use in the RMIG CNC punch presses. The perforated panels are carefully inspected before they are delivered to the site for installation.
With RMIG ImagePerf, there is also focus on functionality and sustainabiltity as the perforated sheets can contribute to the optimal balance of light and energy in and out of a building. This provides a comfortable indoor environment and helps to reduce energy consumption.
RMIG offers expert advice on the use of picture perforation, providing solutions that make a lasting impression by using innovative perforated design within architecture.
RMIG has the expertise and experience along with the unique ability to reproduce images by varying hole size, pitch and spacing. The result – RMIG ImagePerf – creates the illusion of differing patterns, shades and densities, while the clever use of geometric patterns can create the impression of three-dimensional images.

Vanderbilt adds new features and benefits to its Aliro IP access control solution Vanderbilt, a global leader in providing state-of-the-art security systems, has announced a new version of its innovative Aliro Internet protocol (IP) based access control solution. Aliro Market Package 1.15 provides a range of refinements to the previous product (originally launched at the end of 2014), while introducing new features to improve functionality within small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs). This is the first rebranded access control system from Vanderbilt since its acquisition of Security Products from Siemens in June 2015 and is therefore a significant event in the company’s development. Aliro offers a transparent architecture with user-friendly software and intuitive mobile applications. With its flexible operating concept, the system can be managed from virtually any Internet connected device and joining the 11 European languages already offered, Market Package 1.15 contains 4 new languages, Russian, Polish, Czech and Greek with Aliro having the capability to assign each user their own language. Easy to configure, the software automatically detects access control units in the system and assigns them IP network addresses. The system can manage up to 512 doors, 10,000 users and 100,000 access cards Aliro uses state-of-the-art MiFare DESfire card readers, featuring an integrated OLED display which shows messages and instructions based on user credentials & language, thus allowing direct interaction with the card holder. With a light frame control, the reader enables the use of customisable colours and sequencing for different types of events. Furthermore, they can be configured for individuals or groups, using a unique code that can allow entry into areas for specific periods of time, without the requirement for an access control card. A USB connected enrolment developer-update.co.uk
reader allows system administrators to register new cards through a simple plug and play device. An exciting new element of Aliro Market Package 1.15 is its roll call feature. In the event of an emergency where a building has to be evacuated, the system can be used to provide accurate information, in the form of a muster report, about who is in the building and where they are currently located. The report produces a list of all personnel identified as being in a certain building or area, giving designated individuals a roll call that can be used to check that everyone has safely evacuated a building. By placing card readers at all evacuation assembly points, personnel can register their presence, thereby allowing safety representatives to focus attention on those on the roll call that have not registered. The Aliro mobile app can also display who is registering at a muster point using notifications. If anti-passback is in operation and a person didn’t badge
out correctly, their pass will be reset once they have registered. ‘The response to Aliro has been fantastic and the additional features in Market Package 1.15 make it an even more attractive proposition for those looking for a flexible and functional IP based access control solution,’ commented Matt Haynes, Global Access Sales Specialist at Vanderbilt. ‘This latest development is part of an on-going improvement process and which will see further enhancements announced in due course.’ For further information please contact Ross Wilks: +44 203 6300 670

The free event opens its doors at 10am and visitors who arrive before 11am can even enjoy a bacon roll on the house.
Gas Safe Register will be delivering a series of seminars as part of a broader ‘Back to Basics’ campaign, which sets out exactly what role the Register has to play in industry and provides some updates on key industry issues.

Also taking to the stage, the Energy Saving Trust and Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering will be addressing topical issues likely to affect the future growth of industry.
The show has gone from strength to strength, with over 90% of the industry’s boiler manufacturers in attendance and more than 20 companies launching new products over the two days.
Among those exhibiting at PHEX+ this year are Worcester, Danfoss, Fernox, Stuart Turner and Henkel.
The venue is easy access from north of London in particular, with 1,500 free parking spaces for visitors, as well as good transport links from nearby train stations and free coach travel from participating merchant branches. CEMBRIT TO INVEST IN NATURAL SLATE Cembrit is pleased to announce the creation of a dedicated natural slates division to offer the UK’s specifiers and slaters greater choice of top end material for prestigious roofing contracts. The philosophy will be to enhance the existing range with additional high quality slates. The new brands will offer reliable, long term availability. This will be supported by dedicated personnel and focused marketing. As a start of the investment and long term commitment to Natural Slate, the group has decided to dedicate a specific person to this product group, Sales Director, Rob Wallace. Cembrit’s ancestry in the UK begins with Alan Blunn Ltd, one of the UK’s original natural slate agents, set up in 1924, offering customer service and technical expertise to all involved in pitched roofing. Acquired by Cembrit in 2000, the reputation and sales of the combined company has continued to grow, to the extent that Cembrit’s natural slates activities became an attractive proposition for others seeking to enhance their position in the UK market. Encouraged by this, Cembrit has realized that there is a responsibility as well as huge potential to provide durable, verifiable, high quality natural slates to the British market. Paul Leach, James Latham’s Group Product Sales & Development Manager for Accoya said, “When it comes to cladding, Accoya®LathamCLAD ticks all the boxes and is the perfect solution for many exterior applications which were once only feasible with non-sustainable material. Use of the wider cladding boards is allowed by the improved dimensional stability, plus cladding joints do not open, tolerances remain tight and twist is prevented. In addition, the wood’s natural appearance is retained for longer, thanks to the superior resistance to the effects of UV exposure.” He added, “Accoya®LathamCLAD is a fantastic material for external specification and fits perfectly with our already established range of sustainable products.” In addition to cladding, sidings and facades, Accoya® wood is also ideal for windows, doors and decking.

Take Control of your Indoor Environment using Under Floor Air Conditioning AET Flexible Space; leading provider of underfloor air conditioning systems are able offer an array of options to clients seeking to improve the indoor environment quality of commercial workspace.
AET Flexible Space systems have been installed in around three million square metres of commercial buildings worldwide and the modularity and flexibility of these plenum based systems is a feature not seen in the traditional and often static installations of ceiling based air conditioning. This offers users and FM’s the ability to quickly and easily reconfigure workspace to suit changing needs. The underfloor systems feature many functions to help users take control of their indoor environment and optimise workspace to suit different areas for different users at different times. A previous study made by MORI in London found that 78% of office workers requested personal
developer-update.co.uk
control of their environment. At one major AET project the FM stated that staff comfort was a major consideration in selecting the system. Further he said that “it is not possible to keep all of the people happy all of the time from a temperature point of view and in the past expected to achieve perhaps 80% satisfaction." However with the AET Flexible Space system they applied a blind study and more like 98% of users indicated they were satisfied. “Quite an amazing performance really” AET Flexible Space systems offer fully functional indoor environmental control; with integrated controllers for all units and full connectivity with house BMS using the latest flexvisor monitoring software. Recent product developments include the FlexTouch remote controller and soon to available FlexApp offering additional user friendly methods of adjusting the fantile integrated controllers remotely. The key to the performance of this functionality is understanding
and operating the controls and communications hardware and software to optimise environmental conditions to suit.
Underfloor systems are commonly used in office environments, utilising the plenum beneath a raised floor as the ventilation zone. Fully conditioned air is fed into the plenum by zonal downflow units (CAM), and then supplied into the workspace via fan terminal units; more commonly known as a “Fantile”.
Heating, Ventilation & Insulation 27 The plug and play fantiles easily interchange with 600mm raised access floor panels allowing fast reconfiguration of office layout and easily accommodating minor changes and major churn. Equipment has simple yet sophisticated controls for individual users and facilities managers offering superior control of indoor environments compared stand-alone services with minimal or no control. Complaints of draughts and cold feet are common and so many times one sees ceiling diffusers switched off or covered with sticky tape and paper in an attempt to divert air when workers are based in a less than ideal position.
with traditional ceiling based or wall mounted air conditioning units. The fantile units feature integrated fatronic controllers as standard where users can personally adjust fan speed and temperature to suit their own comfort. It is interesting to note that when users are free to choose their environmental temperature they often choose higher temperatures than engineers design for; as a result considerable savings in operational energy can be made. A rise in setpoint temperature of 1oC will often reduce energy by as much as 10%. The FM can observe that users are selecting higher setpoints and can re-set the zone units accordingly, enabling fully functional control.
The plug and play fantiles can also be easily re-located within minutes to accommodate present and future changes in office workspace, or “churn”; a common factor in many modern offices. Facilities managers are frequently challenged by the pace of such churn, and it can exceed their ability to adjust electrical and BMS configurations due to costs, time and other such constraints due to fixed,
Local adjustment of CAM units by service and maintenance engineers is easy accessed via the Flexmatic display mounted on the unit face. Systems can be now be configured with full connectivity using the latest flexvisor software, allowing remote adjustment and monitoring. FM’s can use the flexvisor system to monitor usage and consequently streamline operational efficiency and provides a user friendly and cost effective solution to keeping the BMS updated.
The flexvisor system can easily interface with most leading BMS, such as Trend, Johnson, Honeywell in Bacnet or Modbus format as required and has been specially developed for monitoring and user control of AET Flexible Space UFAC systems. The latest flexvisor release offers enhanced remote monitoring and adjustment capability; accessed via an Internet Protocol (IP) address, it is available in multiple languages and provides an extremely user friendly solution to keeping the BMS updated
and consequently is able to optimise energy efficiency of the building services. After initial commissioning of the systems the flexvisor is populated by uploading an image of each floor plan. Each zone unit (CAM) is displayed along with up to the maximum twenty four (24) associated master fantiles. The fantile icons are simply clicked on then dragged and dropped to their chosen location. Each icon stores data related to room temperature, setpoint and fan speed. When a fantile is relocated it is a simply matter for the FM to drag and drop the associated icon it to its new location and it takes with it all the data originally applied. The same can be done with CAM units but typically zone units are not often relocated. Using the flexvisor system, service engineers and FM’s can also receive immediate email or SMS notifications about warnings or alarm signals when they occur, allowing them to respond quickly and minimise any potential system downtime. Air conditioning is often the biggest source of complaint in office environments with around 20-30% of workers not happy with their temperature; either being too hot or too cold. AET Flexible Space systems can overcome this problem by providing user adjustment locally at the fantile or CAM and remotely via the flexvisor monitoring system offering superior control of fast changing environments. With future leading workspace trends pointing towards the creation of active and agile spaces as well as intelligent space, the AET Flexible Space UFAC systems can easily satisfy the demands of both adapting and controlling heating and cooling within mixed use and changing workspace.

PANASONIC ADDS TO ITS ETHEREA AIR CONDITIONING RANGE Panasonic has introduced two new product lines to its Etherea range. The new Z and TZ domestic air conditioning systems are the first air conditioning products from Panasonic to contain the R32 refrigerant offering high efficiency, and environmentally friendly qualities.
developer-update.co.uk
Heating, Ventilation & Insulation 29
Panasonic has launched two new ranges of domestic air conditioning units that complement its existing Etherea line up. The high spec Z range features the white Z9SKE, Z12SKE, Z15SKE and Z18SKE indoor wall-mounted models, and the silver XZ9SKE, XZ12SKE, XZ15SKE and XZ18SKE units. The TZ range includes the TZ9-SKE, TZ12-SK, TZ18-SKE and TZ24-SKE wall mounted units. The new Z range of Etherea products has been fundamentally redesigned to suit the interior of any home or commerical property. The sleek new design of the units means they are not only unobstrusive, but also more compact than ever before, taking up less space on the wall. With this clean, fresh, white design, the Panasonic Z range leads the market in its appearance, ensuring that wherever the units are installed they won’t impact on the look and feel of the interior aesthetic. Whilst other systems use refrigerant R410A as standard, Panasonic's new Etherea products use the environmentally friendly R32 alternative. R32 is a single component refrigerant which means it is easy to recycle, and it also has a much lower impact on the ozone layer and global warming. By utilising this refrigerant in its new products, Panasonic is responding to customers needs and industry requirements.
The Z range includes Panasonic’s EcoNavi sensor and Nanoe G air purifying system. Econavi features an in-built human activity sensor and a new sunlight detection technology to adjust output, therefore providing the best comfort at all times, whilst still saving energy. Econavi not only optimises air flow orientation and volume, according to human presence, it also reduces cooling power automatically by no/less sunshine. With Econavi, energy savings of up to 38% are possible. Furthermore, the Nanoe revolutionary air-purifying system utilises nanotechnology fine particles to remove and deactivate 99% of both airborne and adhesive microorganisms like bacteria, viruses and mould. Ensuring the comfort of end users, the TZ range ranks an incredibly quiet 20dB(A) grade, while the Z range operates at 19dB(A), which is equivalent to nightime in the countryside. The TZ models are powerful and efficient, with an outstanding energy ranking of A++/A+, while the Z range has a rating of A+++/A++. The new models are sleek and compact in design, making specifying these units in even the most design conscious interior an easy decision. For more information, please visit www.aircon.panasonic.eu

ABOARD THE BEDROAM BUS 32 Heating, Ventilation & Insulation
Rinnai, the leading continuous flow gas fired water heater manufacturer, has seen its products installed in numerous sites with unusual applications but one project has pushed the boundaries of the unusual. The project is so unusual it caught the eye of Channel 4’s ‘Amazing Spaces’ presented by George Clarke and the Rinnai product was one of the stars of the show.
RINNAI Andy, a registered Gas Safe engineer also based in Melbourne, who IS REALLY then ordered and undertook the installation. MOTORING Andy Dixon, who runs his own ABOARD THE plumbing and heating service, explains: “The boilers had to go on the back of the bus as Ollie was BEDROAM struggling to find enough space inside. As the bus has an air con system, I had BUS already put a cooling radiator off the back so
‘Bedroam’ is the brainchild of Ollie Kemp, a farmer, motor racing competitor and enthusiast from Melbourne, Yorkshire. He wasn’t happy with the lack of onsite accommodation at events that would allow competitors to stay close to their expensive and irreplaceable racing gear. The constructive result of this dissatisfaction is the Bedroam bus, complete with 18 Japanese-style pod bedrooms. As well as using it himself for motorsport meets, Bedroam is available to hire. “If you can’t get a hotel when you’re going to a wedding or don’t want to camp at a festival then this is the perfect solution,” he told George Clarke of ‘Amazing Spaces’. Needless to say he has been inundated with bookings. The Bedroam has two fully-equipped bathrooms with shower, toilet and sink. Sinks and showers are supplied with safe temperature controlled hot water from Rinnai Infinity LPG water heaters, complete with MC91 controller, via motion sensor-operated taps. Two Rinnai Infinity 17e external units fitted to the back of the bus drawing water from a bespoke designed tank designed and supplied by Barratt Tanks of Ferrybridge West Yorkshire. Bedroam also includes air conditioning, flat screen TVs, comfortable communal areas and a multifunctional outdoor space provided by an enclosed awning. “I first saw Rinnai units in operation at an event where there were luxury mobile showers powered by Rinnai units. On my return, I researched Rinnai online and spoke to my friend developer-update.co.uk
the two Rinnai units sat very handily behind that simply hung on a metal grid attached to the back of the bus. “Piping was easy. I used plastic pipework for both hot and cold outlets running to a little plant room where the back seats of the bus were originally which is directly beneath the bathrooms from where the water is pumped to the header tank via a small 12V. “Rinnai’s technical guys were very helpful when I phoned them initially for some advice and installation of the units was really easy. I will definitely be using Rinnai again,” says Andy. The most recent event for the Bedroam was a River Rat Race, which involves contestants doing a 6 kilometre run with obstacles followed by a river swim. The organisers used the Bedroam for their HQ and for the principal runners to shower. They were very happy as the boilers provided more than enough hot water for everybody. “Demand for the Bedroam is phenomenal and I am thinking about building more, maybe even franchising the concept. Rinnai will definitely be used if and when I go ahead with that,’ concludes Ollie. For more information on the RINNAI product range visit www.rinnaiuk.com
