Industry interests not addressed in election Political parties are not suitably addressing the interests of the construction industry, according to a pre-election opinion poll conducted by UK Construction Week. The survey questioned more than 1,000 product manufacturers, contractors, architects, housebuilders, developers and suppliers from around the industry, asking for their thoughts on policies affecting the construction industry. The overwhelming majority (71%) replied that they do not feel the interests of the industry have been addressed by the election campaigns, with only 29% stating that construction has received adequate political attention. When asked which party would be best for the industry if it comes to power, the Conservatives demonstrated a clear lead with 54% of the vote. The results place Labour well behind at 30%, while the Green Party has pushed ahead of the Liberal Democrats, coming in at 6% and 4% respectively. UKIP managed to claim 4% of the vote, with SNP and Plaid Cymru jointly accounting for the remaining 2%. Despite the positive indication for the Conservatives, the survey also appeared to reveal a desire for political change, with 72% stating that a change in government would have a positive or neutral impact on the construction industry and just 28% replying that this would have negative consequences.
Canary Wharf Group gains planning for two new towers Canary Wharf Group has been granted planning permission for two tower developments to be built on its main docklands site in East London. Tower Hamlets granted One Bank Street, a planning permission. Site enabling works began earlier this year and construction will begin later in 2015. The architect is Kohn Pederson Fox. There will also be public access to a new promenade along the South Dock. Société Générale has already agreed a lease for 280,000 sq ft of One Bank Street. It will occupy year lease. Election uncertainty could impact construction for next two years The impact of an uncertain election is expected to slow growth in the construction industry, according to the Construction Products Association (CPA). Construction output is forecast to increase 5.5% in 2015 according to the latest forecasts from the CPA, however, growth is expected to slow in the following two years due to the uncertainty surrounding the coming election. Dr Noble Francis, economics director, CPA, said: “Construction output is forecast to increase 5.5% in 2015, which is more than double the rate of growth for the UK economy, due to growth in the three key sectors of construction; private housing, commercial and infrastructure.” Private house building forecast to rise 10.0% in 2015, 5.0% in 2016 and 3.0% in 2017. Commercial construction is expected to increase 6.4% in 2015, 5.2% in 2016 and 4.4% in 2017 and infrastructure activity is predicted to rise 7.6% in 2015, 9.2% in 2016 and 10.6% in 2017. Dr Francis said despite a slowdown in the general housing market, house building continues to drive construction industry growth. “After rising 13.3% in 2014, private house building is forecast to increase a further 10.0% to 142,000 new homes in 2015.

The project is part of a wider mixed-use regeneration scheme for the University. Measuring 3,289 sq m (35,402 sq ft), CitySport is 80% larger than Saddlers Sports Centre, which it replaced, and incorporates a six -court, multipurpose sports hall that is able to stage county standard badminton, basketball, indoor football, hockey, volleyball and netball events. tp bennett was originally appointed by City University London to complete a feasibility study and then worked together with developer Generation Estates to fully explore the site’s potential. Celebrating Leicester’s Jubilee Square LDA Design’s concept for a new public space in Leicester’s city centre has now been realised following the completion of work on Jubilee Square. The £4m scheme provides a new gateway to the city’s Cathedral Quarter and the site of the discovered remains of Richard III. The project was commissioned by Leicester City Council as part of Connecting Leicester – a major programme of work launched by City Mayor Peter Soulsby to improvepedestrian links between Leicester’s historic buildings and heritage sites and the modern heart of the city. Jubilee Square has transformed an area of the city dominated by a surface level car park into a brand new public space that features an event square, lawns, a terraced garden, and a new courtyard garden for the historic Wygston’s House. LDA Design worked with Leicester City Council to develop plans from concept stages through to completion. In partnership, LDA Design and the council have liaised with local people throughout the process, ensuring that the public realm meets the needs of the community both now and in the future. Located in the cultural heart of the city, the square serves as part of a wider regeneration scheme to renovate the city centre. Bureau de Change Complete MADE Store The brief for the new MADE store was to re-evaluate the concept of a ‘showroom’ and incorporate technology in a way that would genuinely add value to the customer experience. Located in one of Europe’s busiest shopping districts, the new store experience begins with the external windows. Rather than display product behind the glass, the glazing itself becomes a full scale representation of the product in an intricate permanent installation. Almost 40,000 hollow clear plastic rods puncture the 10 windows of the store to create three-dimensional ‘pinpressions’ (similar to the 1980’s executive PinArt toy) of some of MADE’s most iconic pieces of furniture. Inside, the store blends physical product with full scale projections in a series of room sets. Customers are guided through a network of white-washed walls - curved like the pages of a book (referencing the literary history of Charing Cross Road). These walls provide a clean backdrop for the furniture and a canvas upon which products can be projected. The use of large format projections mean a single room can show multiple combinations of product changeable on demand. This opens up the possibility for customers to experience the full product catalogue without requiring a hangar-like showroom or costly central storage facilities. favourite pieces. AC Milan Stadium Plans Kick-Off A.C. Milan and Arup have presented their expression of interest for the redevelopment of a central area in Milan to host the new A.C. Milan stadium. The innovative venue will include a modern stage for the home matches of the club together with a hotel, a sports college, restaurants, children’s playground, green areas and spaces open to the city and dedicated to public use. The project is to be developed by Arup’s architecture, urban planning and engineering team in Milan. The new stadium will also provide a unique experience to the spectators, with particular attention towards families, with cutting edge technologies and facilities. The project has been developed with a fully holistic and integrated approach where all the design components have been carefully balanced around the spectator’s experience. Some of these components include sight-lines analysed and designed for every seat, developed by an Arup parametric tool that guarantees the best possible view from every location in the stadium. These high-tech solutions aim to enhance the spectators’ experience before, during and after the matches. As part of the sustainability improvements, the stadium will include a moveable roof to mitigate noise in the surroundings and special attention will be dedicated to the social and environmental needs of the users.

Fired Up For GROWTH Newton Aycliffe-based fireplace manufacturer CVO Fire is targeting expansion over the next 12 months after launching a new product line and completing a number of significant contracts. The company has launched its first range of electric fires due to market demand, and has also teamed up for a project with an outdoor fireplace manufacturer in Italy. In addition, CVO has recently completed a number of new installations for businesses including Quaglino’s in Mayfair, Greene King pubs in Dublin and various Wetherspoons pubs.
As a result of such a successful year, the company has plans to expand in 2015. Managing director Andrew Munro said: “Demand in the sector is constantly evolving and we must keep up with that, hence we have now fully launched our first range of electric fires. “Outdoor fires are also enjoying a revival, especially amongst bar and hotel owners who use their outdoor spaces to increase capacity, so we have also decided to expand our range.

1. Get Rid of Clutter Toiletries, bottles, children’s toys and ornaments all make small spaces feel even smaller. Store all of these things away – out of sight in a cabinet somewhere. It will have an immediate impact. Limit yourself to a few choice things which complement each other, and your bathroom. Place them somewhere visible, but out of the way e.g. a window ledge or on a shelf.
2. Keep Design to a Minimum The same logic behind de-cluttering your bathroom applies to the designs you should choose to use. A small bathroom is best suited to simple, clean lines, limited designs and contemporary features, so hold yourself back from complicated patterning or

5. Storage is Your Friend There’s a huge variety of bathroom furniture available which has been designed for extra storage space with smaller bathrooms in mind. Corner basins and units can be ideal ways to increase your storage capacity without intruding too much into your bathroom.

Situated on the outskirts of Groombridge village in Kent, this family dwelling is constructed from timber framing, clad in larch and roofed with zinc which complements its natural surroundings. The property replaces a former tumbledown cottage on the site and now forms the architect’s family home and place of work. The dining room doors open up the side of the house and are used daily during the summer months for ventilation and access to external terracing to create an indoor / outdoor experience for the family to enjoy. This external sliding system was ideal for the project as it is designed to accommodate large door leaves of up to 3m x 3m. The hardware system also provides superior weather resistance due to its bottom pad and anti-derail plate which provides a secure seal between the central meeting point stiles and the threshold. The large garage sliding door uses the Soltaire system for its robust to allow the ease of access to garden equipment and tools. This reliable system is extremely durable, ideal for heavy use and
offers a high level of corrosion resistance. Soltaire can be used with metal or timber doors and in this project it was installed with painted hardwood to match the rest of the building’s woodwork. Thermal performance and air tightness were important considerations for this project as the property has no conventional heating source and relies solely on a single log burning stove for all its heating requirements. The wellinsulated structure uses solar power to heat water and has a low air tightness rating of 1.7 m3/hr/m2 which helped the residence achieve a Dwelling Emmision Rate of 12.68 t/yr. Adam Penton adds; “The design respects the rural woodland setting of the site in form and detailing. Its composition allows it to cascade down the sloping site without adjusting the natural site contours and its all timber construction raised on stilts allows it to hover in the delicately in the landscape. The impact of an uncertain election is expected to slow growth in the construction industry, according to the Construction Products Association (CPA).
“After rising 13.3% in 2014, private house building is forecast to increase a further 10.0% to 142,000 new homes in 2015.
Construction output is forecast to increase 5.5% in 2015 according to the latest forecasts from the CPA, however, growth is expected to slow in the following two years due to the uncertainty surrounding the coming election.
“Although fewer homes are being built than we need each year, private house building growth is forecast to slow to 5.0% in 2016 and 3.0% in 2017. Again, this is primarily due to uncertainty regarding government policy such as Help to Buy, which has otherwise stimulated house building in

BRE Trust launches built environment resilience research programme The BRE Trust has announced a major three year funding programme to improve the resilience of buildings and infrastructure wind damage and overheating. The body is to fund a Resilient Built Environment themed research programme, with a focus on climate resilience. Earlier research and consultations have highlighted three major climatic impacts with associated gaps in existing knowledge are the priority areas for this programme. The research will be closely aligned with the work of the BRE Centre for Resilience, created in 2014 to address adverse weather effects, as well as social, security and disaster issues. The BRE University Centres of Excellence are an integral part of the Centre and will also be fully integrated into the programme. The project is part of a wider mixed-use regeneration scheme for the University. Measuring 3,289 sq m (35,402 sq ft), CitySport is 80% larger than Saddlers Sports Centre, which it replaced, and incorporates a six -court, multi-purpose sports hall that is able to stage county standard badminton, basketball, indoor football, hockey, volleyball and netball events. tp bennett was originally appointed by City University London to complete a feasibility study and then worked together with developer Generation Estates to fully explore the site’s potential. At the time, it housed a redundant 1960s development, as well as Saddlers Sports Centre and two student residence blocks. Eric Wright Engineering Success Eric Wright Construction, a division of the Eric Wright Group, has completed a multi-million pound engineering facility at Lancaster University. Featuring a central atrium, the 50,600 sq ft engineering facility is a two-winged development designed to house mechanical workshops and laboratories on the ground meeting zones on levels three and four. Designed by John McAslan and Partners, the world-class development will provide additional areas for future growth and new specialisms such as nuclear, energy and state-of-the-art learning environment, which integrates contemporary ‘live labs’ as a visible aspect of the external building design. Built in-line with Lancaster University’s sustainability and carbon reduction targets, the building has been designed to achieve the environmental performance measure of BREEAM ‘outstanding.’ The development combines multiple renewable energy sources including wind and biomass provisions. Eric Wright is also underway with other projects on campus as part of the University’s ten-year master-plan to improve student facilities. These include the complete internal refurbishment of the Faraday Building for the Chemistry department and the construction of a new Collaborative Technology Access Programme (cTAP) building which will provide additional research and development laboratories.
Green Construction Board Solid Wall Insulation Review A review into the effectiveness of Solid Wall Insulation (SWI) has been launched by The Green Construction Board, with a particular focus on improving the affordability and increasing its attractiveness as a solution. The Green Construction Board has commissioned chief construction adviser, Peter Hansford, to undertake the review, which will include addressing certain concerns including: health and environmental issues, manufacturing capacity and the impact of existing policies. Overseeing the research and acting as a Steering Group will be Green Construction Board members, Rob Lambe from Willmott Dixon and Lynne Sullivan from SustainableByDesign. According to The Green Construction Board, the call for evidence is strongly supported by The Department for Energy and Climate Change and Department for Communities and Local Government, who will also link with, but remain independent from, the review team. A report will be made to the Green Construction Board in June 2015.
