Thorndale United Methodist Church (TUMC) has been part of the Caln Township community for 136 years. As great as the past has been, church members are very excited about the future. TUMC’s new pastor Mark Moore assumed his leadership duties on July 1. He succeeds the Rev. Tom Davis-Shappell, who retired after more than 40 years in ministry, the last 10 at TUMC. Moore comes to Thorndale after having served churches in Lancaster, Chester and Lehigh counties. Additionally, he is a retired reservist, having served in the United States Air Force for 30 years, including five and a half years on active duty after the attacks of Sept. 11. TUMC is and seeks to be an even more vital part of
the community. The church hosts several community organizations, including AA and Al-Anon. Regular events, in addition to worship services, fellowship and educational programs, are always open to the community. The church offers a monthly movie night (always family friendly), sponsors Kids’ Kamp in the summer, and provides many other opportunities for people to meet their neighbors On Caln Community Day, on Saturday, Sept. 13, TUMC will present its annual flea market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A pancake breakfast will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. For additional information, readers may visit www.thorndaleumc.org or call the church office at 610-384-2433. Visitors are also welcome to attend Sunday services at 8:30 and 10 a.m.

This fall, the Caln Township Board of Commissioners will distribute a trash cart to all solid waste collection customers. Similar to the recycling carts distributed several years ago, the new carts can only be used for trash and will be identified by a black lid, which will distinguish this cart as trash only. The standard cart sizes to be distributed will be 35-gallon or 65-gallon capacity carts. Those residents currently utilizing the 35-gallon capacity recycling cart will automatically receive a matching 35-gallon capacity trash cart. The new trash cart will be required to be used as the primary container for trash collection. In addition to this, residents will be able to set out two additional 35-gallon watertight trash containers or bags on each collection day. The carts will be purchased primarily with funds from a recent PA DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) grant reimbursement due to the township’s past recycling activities. The carts will be assembled and distributed by the vendor to all properties in October and November. The carts will be more secure than bags; they will keep out rain and vermin and will make it easier to transport trash to the curb. In addition, the trashhaulers are beginning to use automated trash trucks, which are specifically designed to pick up and dump the carts. This reduces labor costs and future township contract costs. At some point in the future, the township expects to receive lower-cost bids that will require the use of these style carts. This keeps costs down and reduces the need for the increase of trash fees. For those who want to dispose of old trash containers, the township will schedule one or more collection dates to collect old containers for proper recycling and disposal. When placing trash and recycling carts at the curb on the scheduled collection day, residents should allow 3 to 4 feet between carts and position with arrows facing towards the street to allow for proper pick up. Both the trash and recycling carts are registered to each property. For those who move, the carts must remain for the next property owner. It is violation of state law to place yard waste in the new trash cart because the contents end up in a landfill. Caln Township has started a pilot project to collect these materials. Residents should watch for notifications about requirements and restrictions pertaining to yard waste collection. In January of 2015, the board will decide whether to continue yard waste collection in the future, so residents may submit their opinions and comments. Concrete, construction debris and dirt, etc., will not be accepted under any circumstances. Residents should insist that their contractors dispose of construction refuse associated with property improvements.

Caln Town Watch Seeks Volunteers The Caln Town Watch is a group of citizens who are dedicated to keeping children, property, neighborhoods and the community safe from crime. The mission of the Town Watch is to be an additional and visible deterrent to help discourage criminal or other unlawful activity in the Caln neighborhoods. Volunteers may install Town Watch yard signs and patrol with Town Watch signage on their cars, which may be a deterrent to illegal activity. Volunteers do not become directly involved in law enforcement nor do they intervene with possible illegal activity. Rather, the purpose of the group is to be an additional set of eyes and ears for the Caln Township Police Department. While on patrol, Town Watch members also note other township concerns such as trash spillage, blocked storm drains and traffic light malfunctions. These issues are also reported so that the appropriate township department can respond. These who would like to join the Town Watch group may download an application at www.calntownship.org. The completed application may be dropped off at the Caln Police Department or at the township offices. Caln Town Watch volunteers hold an administrative meeting at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month. For meeting location or more information, readers may consult the township website and click on the Town Watch tab.

Old Caln Historical Society Begins Capital Campaign The Old Caln Meeting House, a nearly 300-year-old Quaker Meeting House listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is currently involved in a campaign to raise funds for historic preservation. The campaign is being arranged through www.kickstarter.com. Visitors to the website can view a video tour, learn about the history of the building and make contributions. The Old Caln Historical Society, which maintains the building along with a board of trustees, all of whom are Quakers, received grants from the Meeting House Trust of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and the Religious Society of Friends, as well as a from a Keystone Grant from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. In order to access these funds, the society must raise matching funds from interested community members. In the past, the society has completed projects such as replacing most of the interior flooring in a historically appropriate manner, redoing the south roof in 2007 and the north roof in 2014, and restoring approximately half of the building’s windows. The society will utilize the Keystone Grant to restore the remaining widows, as well as to repair and paint the fascia board around the building. The Old Caln Meetinghouse is located on Route 340 at the intersection with Caln Meetinghouse Road in Caln Township. The meeting house, the oldest building in Caln Township, has been the place of worship for Quakers or members of “The Religious Society of Friends of the Truth for three centuries. Built in 1726, the east room was added in 1801 to accommodate quarterly meetings held by Quakers from the surrounding region. One-third of the Old Caln Meeting House is used as a museum to house the archives, artifacts and other historical memorabilia, which has been collected by the Society. More information about the building and the Old Caln Historical Society is available at www.oldcalnmeetinghouse. org. To learn more about the capital captain, readers may visit www. kickstarter.com and search for “Pre-Revolutionary Old Caln Historic Preservation Project.
The Old Caln Meeting House on Route 340 is the oldest building in Caln Township.

Hexagonal School Is Example Of Caln History
The hexagonal school is a historically significant building located in Caln Township. Located at the corner of Municipal Drive and G.O. Carlson Boulevard, the schoolhouse (circa 1837) was built by Richard and Mary Edge Pim, members of the Society of Friends, also known as Quakers. The Pims were the parents of nine children. The small hexagonal building served three purposes. The lower level served as the family’s springhouse, keeping milk and other foods cool in a time when refrigerators did not exist. A hired teacher, who lived with the Pims, taught their young children and neighboring cousins on the main level of the schoolhouse. The six-sided design of the building was used to take full advantage of all available light as the sun progressed from east to west. The small wood stove, which warmed the children in the cold months, provided the smoke needed to “smoke” and cure the meats on the top floor. The unique 75-ton structure was originally situated on the Pims’ 192-acre farm, located on present-day Edge Lane. When that property was sold to a developer in the late 1960s, the school was moved to its present location. In 1971, the hexagonal school was entered in the Pennsylvania Registry of Historic Sites. Caln The hexagonal school on Municipal Drive in Caln Township uses a logo of the schoolhouse as part if Township was build around 1837 and served as a school for Quaker children. its official seal.
