Rotary District 7390 holds this annual conference for seniors who are selected and interviewed by the 43 Rotary Clubs in the district. Church To Give Away Book Bags “We Got Your Pak� will take place at Windsor Assembly of God, 21 N. Penn St., Windsor, on Thursday, Aug. 9, at 6:30 p.m. During the event, book bags with school supplies will be distributed to students in the Windsor and Red Lion Area. Children entering kindergarten through 12th grade are eligible to receive a backpack from the church. Students must preregister by calling 717-244-6236. Students will need to check in at the welcome tables in order to receive a confirmation slip to pick up backpacks. Supplies are limited on a firstcome, first-served basis. Smoke In The Grove Planned Smoke in the Grove, a state championship barbecue competition and festival, will be held on Friday, July 27, and Saturday, July 28, at Spring Grove Community Park, 205 E. Railroad St., Spring Grove. More than 50 professional barbecue teams will travel from througout the midAtlantic region for the opportunity to compete for more than $13,000 in prizes. In addition, Spring Grove will host 18 backyard barbecue teams, 12 first responder teams, and more than 85 Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS)-certified judges from various areas of the mid-Atlantic. The festival portion of the event will feature Nashville recording artist Brittany Opperman on July 27 and Velveeta of State College on July 28. Beverages will be available for purchase, as well as opportunities to sample and vote for wings prepared by first responder teams on July 27
and smoked pulled pork from professional teams on July 28. Family activities will include lawn games, bounce houses, and a rock wall. Smoke in the Grove has been selected as one out of only five nationwide events as a Hot Pass qualifying event for Cowboy Charcoal’s Fire and Ice Women’s Series, where the top female pitmaster will win a cash prize and advance directly to the World Food Championship. This series is open to all female-led barbecue teams. Lady pitmasters will vie for the opportunity to become one of 10 finalists who will compete at the series finale held at the World Food Championships from Nov. 9 to 11 in Orange Beach, Ala. Club Memorial Scholarship program was established in 1980. As of 2018, the club has awarded a total of $64,900 through 71 scholarships. Date Posted For Honoring Korean War Veterans National Korean War Veterans Day will take place on Friday, July 27. The event will take place on the anniversary of the July 27, 1953, armistice signed by North Korea, China, the United States and the United Nations, suspending all hostilities. In honor of the Americans who served during that time, and especially those who died, the President has proclaimed July 27 as National Korean War Veterans Day. He encouraged Americans to observe the day with ceremonies and activities honoring all Korean War veterans.
History Center Sets Colonial York Day The York County History Center will present Colonial York Day, a free day of living history activities, on Saturday, July 28. The festivities will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the History Center’s Colonial Complex at 157 W. Market St., York. The site includes the General Horatio Gates House and Golden Plough Tavern and the Colonial Court House. Colonial York Day will include 30-minute dramatizations of the election of York County’s first public official in 1750. The election ended in a brawl between German and Irish settlers. The dramatizations will take place at 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. at the Bobb Log Cabin. In addition, visitors may engage with re-enactors, demonstrators, and living historians. Mark Hagenbuch will portray Baron Von Steuben, the man credited with professionalizing the Continental Army, on the Colonial Courthouse lawn at 11:30 a.m. The Lancaster Flying Camp will present mortar demonstrations at noon and 2 p.m. Wagon rides will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A presentation titled “18th-Century Law and Justice� will be presented by York County Judge Gregory M. Snyder in the Colonial Courthouse at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The family activity area will

Lacrosse Team Posts Successful Season
With a season record of 38-1, the Shooting Irish Lacrosse girls’ 7/8 team won its sixth straight York Girls’ Lacrosse Rising Stars Tournament on May 20 at Southwestern High School. In addition, the team the won the Hershey Lacrosse Tournament and the Governor Mifflin Tournament and was a finalist in the Rock the Cages Tournament. The squad also went undefeated in the York County Girls League and Lancaster Area Girls Lacrosse Association league. YCAS To Offer Special Events The York County Astronomical Society (YCAS) will offer a public event at its observatory at John C. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, July 28. Solar and Radio Astronomy will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and How to Buy an Astronomical Telescope will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Radio astronomy is the study of unseen radiated energy in the electromagnetic spectrum below visible light. By using radio astronomy, astro-
nomical phenomena that are otherwise invisible are able to be studied. Attendees will also be able to view the Sun through the society’s solar telescope, as well as view it remotely on a TV screen that will be hooked up to a telescope. How to Buy an Astronomical Telescope will provide information and advice regarding how to buy one’s first optical astronomical telescope. The presentation will discuss the many pitfalls in buying a new telescope to consider before

Acts of Kindness Theatre Company (AOK) will present its production of Disney’s “Newsies” at the Eichelberger Performing Arts Center, 195 Stock St., Suite 203, Hanover, from Fridays to Sundays, July 27 to 29, and Aug. 3 to 5. The Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 7 p.m. Sundays shows will begin at 2 p.m. The award-winning stage musical is based on the 1992 film inspired by the real newsboy strike of 1899 in New York City. The musical has music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein. The show is under the direction of Rene Staub. Leadership also includes musical director Lisa Pantano, choreographer Sarah Flynn, and assistant director/production coordinator Jessica Staub. The cast of more than 35 dancers and vocalists includes award-winning talent, including Isaac Silver as Jack Kelly, Vincent Beck as David Jacobs, Brooke Weber as Katherine Plumber, Luke Mumma as Crutchie, Rowen Barber as Les Jacobs, and local theater veterans Drew Derreth as Joseph Pulitzer and Bonnie Raubenstine as Medda Larkin. The technical dancing is performed by young men and women who have taken dance from numerous studios in York and Adams counties. Jazz dance styles, tap dancing, and gymnastics are heavily utilized throughout the production. “Newsies” is AOK’s 14th production. AOK has given back to the community by donating a total of more than $150,000 to various organizations, including Make-A-Wish, The Hanover Symphony Orchestra, Wigs for Kids, the SPCA, American Heart Association, and Hanover Library. Representative Offers Assistance In light of the deadline to apply for the state’s Property Tax/Rent Rebate program being extended until Monday, Dec. 31, Rep. Kate Klunk reminds residents that her staff can assist with filling out the application. Pennsylvanians who are age 65 or older, widows and widowers age 50 or older, and individuals age 18 or older with permanent disabilities are eligible to apply for a rebate of up to $650 based on their rent or property taxes paid in 2017. Klunk’s staff is available to assist constituents with staterelated matters, including completing the Property Tax/Rent Rebate program application. Galentine-Gohn James and Judith Galentine of Dover have announced the engagement of their daughter Kelsey Galentine of Dover to Dennis Gohn Jr. of Red Lion. The bride-elect graduated from Dover Area High School in 2013. She is employed by Genie Electronics in York.
