The Columbia Creative Factory has begun a campaign to raise funds to purchase the building that it currently occupies at 247 Locust St., Columbia. A nonprofit organization geared toward cultivating creativity through shared arts experiences, the Columbia Creative Factory is an offshoot of the Lancaster Creative Factory and has been offering art classes and programming for children, youths, and adults since 2016. Mychal LaVia, who facilitates workshops at the Columbia Creative Factory, said that the use of the space had been donated to the organization for the past two years, but the building went up for sale in 2018. The Creative Factory team decided to begin the process of fundraising in hopes of purchasing it as a permanent location. Otherwise, the group will need to find a new location when the building sells. According to Andrea Campbell of the Columbia Creative Factory, the cost to purchase and make a few needed upgrades to the building will be $425,000, which means that the organization must raise $275,000 by Wednesday, May 1. “We will then be able to get a mortgage for $150,000,” Campbell stated. “The income from studio rentals will cover the mortgage payments.” Thus far, the organization has obtained pledges for $55,000 toward the project. The approximately 11,000square-foot space currently has a

first-floor gallery and a community space that is utilized for programming, as well as basement storage and two levels of upstairs studio space that can be rented out to artists. Upgrades to the building will include making the space ADA-compliant and adding new ADA-compliant restrooms. Weekly art programs for students at the Columbia Boys and Girls Club - which is conveniently located right across the street at 248 Locust St. - are offered at the Creative Factory on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Writeface, another nonprofit group that offers creative expression workshops for veterans and their family members at no charge, also meets at the site. The Columbia Creative Factory frequently partners with the Columbia Borough School District (CBSD), Our Lady of the Angels School, and other local businesses and community groups. Kevin Lehman, founder and director of the Lancaster Creative Factory, located at 580 S. Prince St., Lancaster, said that continuing to offer community work space and programming is a major part of the plans for the Columbia Creative Factory as the team dreams of owning its current operating space. Team members also hope to offer even more programming for adults and families in the Columbia area. LaVia said that seeing the difference the Creative Factory has made in the community during

We’ve got ideas (for programming and other events), but it’s really flexible and based on what the community needs.” “It’s really a community space, and we really feel like we’re here for the community,” said

Lehman, adding that the team members at the Creative Factory believe they can be a part of the spark that draws more people to Columbia for all that the borough has to offer. AHA Sets National Wear Red Day The American Heart Association (AHA) has announced that National Wear Red Day will be marked on Friday, Feb. 1, as February is designated as American Heart Month. Individuals, workplaces, and landmarks across central Pennsylvania will “go red” in celebration of National Wear Red Day. The initiative aims to unite millions of people for a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke. Individuals are encouraged to wear red on Feb. 1 to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. Participants are encouraged to share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #WearRedandGive. In 2004, the AHA created Go

Red for Women, a social initiative designed to dispel myths and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 killer of women, as well as to empower women to take charge of their heart health. Go Red for Women aims to encourage awareness of the issue of women and heart disease and also action to save more lives. In 2010, the AHA set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020. For more information, readers may visit www.WearRedDay.org or http://GoRedForWomen.org.

Braving The Cold For A Polar Plunge By Chelsea Peifer

It takes a special person to willingly run into the frigid waters of the Susquehanna River in February, but year after year the York County Polar Plunge draws a sizeable crowd of willing “plungers” - as the participants are affectionately dubbed. The 11th annual York County Polar Plunge is set to take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, along the Susquehanna River in front of John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville. Not only are folks willing to dip into the waters amidst sometimes freezing temperatures, but many also go all out and participate in the annual costume contest. “Last year the winner of the most original (costume) was a tree,” recalled organizer Robyn Liggins-Smith, adding that the costume contest is her favorite portion of the event. “We have superheroes, ballet dancers, swimsuits, Hawaiian dancers, Where’s Waldo … just about anything you can think of has joined in the costume contest,” LigginsSmith shared. York Revolution mascot DownTown joins the fun each year by helping to entertain the crowd, going so far as to actually plunge in his costume. Another staple is the team that starts the waves of plungers, which is made up of current and retired police

officers from throughout York County and led by Lt. Dan Aikey of the York County Police Department. Registration and sign-in will open at 9:30 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and the costume parade and contest at 10:45 a.m. Awards will be given for the best costume and most original costume. Plungers will begin assembling in waves around 11:45 a.m., and the plunge will start at noon. Special Olympics PA York County (SOYC) athletes will lead each wave of participants to the river. Plungers may dip in just a toe or go all in for a total of three minutes. Heated tents will be set up for participants to change into dry clothes afterward. Coffee, hot chocolate, water, and snacks will also be available. To register in advance - which organizers recommend for anyone interested in avoiding waiting in long lines - as an individual or a team, readers may visit w w w. s p e c i a l o l y m p i c s y o r k county.org. “There is no cost to register - everyone and anyone can plunge,” explained LigginsSmith. “However, this is a fundraiser, so we ask that you get sponsors.” Participants who raise at least $25 will receive a T-shirt, and those who raise at least $100 will receive a hooded sweatshirt. Golden Plunger awards - which are actually golden plungers - are

given to the individual and the team that have raised the most money. All proceeds will support the 360 athletes of the SOYC, which provides year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The Polar Plunge helps to ensure that all training and competition opportunities will continue to be provided free of charge to the SOYC athletes and their families. The 15 sports programs are supported by hundreds of volunteers and contributions from the community. Anyone who would like to contribute toward SOYC without taking a dip in the icy cold river is welcome to donate at the aforementioned website or to attend as a chicken plunger - someone who supports the plunge but does not go into the water. The infamous chicken dance, set for 11:15 a.m., will be performed by all of the chicken plungers in attendance. Liggins-Smith said that last year’s 10th anniversary Polar Plunge raised a total of $76,000 for SOYC. “The weather was actually nice, if you consider 34 degrees nice, and that was the air temperature,” recalled Liggins-Smith. “The water temperature was about 21 degrees.” Nevertheless, approximately 750 plungers stepped up to - or into - the challenge.

EYRA was created to jointly operate educational, recreational, and sports programs and facilities to economically meet the present and future needs regarding parks and recreation for residents of Hellam Township, Lower Windsor Township, and Hallam Borough. According to Jessica Cirilo, the parks and recreation director, EYRA’s purpose is to operate, strengthen, and expand the community recreation programs formerly provided by Hellam Recreation Commission.

Jessica Cirilo

The EYRA became a reality due to the successful completion of a Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DNCR) Bureau of Recreation and Conservation Peer-to-Peer Technical Assistant Project. This project helped EYRA with the tasks necessary to begin its operations. By submitting a successful Circuit Rider grant application to DCNR, the organization was able to recruit and hire a full-time parks and recreation director. Cirilo, a certified parks and recreation professional (CPRP), was hired as the first director in mid-November. As EYRA is an organization with one full-time employee, Cirilo is tasked with coordinating sport leagues, activities, and programs; managing special events and facilities; conducting marketing efforts; writing grants and securing funding; and communicating with volunteers and all those involved. “I am honored to have the opportunity to help advance and inspire the direction of park and recreation services and facilities in the area,” stated Cirilo. “With this new venture, we are certainly at a point of change, and I am

so grateful for the support and encouragement I have received so far. “I am valuing the opportunity to make connections with the municipalities, school district, and local businesses,” Cirilo added. “I am also excited to build partnerships and network with neighboring recreation professionals. As seamless as we intend transitions to be, I fully appreciate that there will be periods of adjustments, but given time, the pieces will come together.” EYRA’s goal is to serve the Eastern York School District area by offering programs, services, and facilities that appeal to a wide audience, benefit residents of all ages and abilities, and create a community that fosters an ideal place to live, play, and work. The organization is in the process of establishing a website. In the interim, residents will begin to learn more about EYRA via municipal newsletters, social media (Facebook and Twitter), and road signs. The EYRA has established an email address at eyrecauthority@gmail.com. For additional information, readers may contact Cirilo at 717-487-5295 or eyrecauthority @gmail.com.

Professor To Discuss Race Revolts York College professor of history Peter Levy, author of the 2018 book “The Great Uprising: Race Revolts in Urban America During the 1960s,” will reflect on York’s race revolts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 6, in the college’s Waldner Performing Arts Center. York College is located at 441 Country Club Road, York. Levy will present an overview of the causes and consequences of York’s revolts, stretching from the migration of African-Americans during the middle decades of the 20th century to recent times. In addition to providing a framework for better understanding York’s revolts - and the well-over 300 revolts - that took place during the 1960s, Levy hopes to stimulate a discussion of why it is important to examine the racial uprisings of the 1960s. The event is part of the Hidden Figures Series presented by the Center for Community Engagement. Hidden Figures is a yearlong celebration of the contributions of communities of

color and other underserved populations. It intends to surface many histories yet to be told and many voices yet to tell them. The event is free and open to the public. Free tickets may be reserved by visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for “Reflecting on York’s Race Revolts With Dr. Peter Levy.” Group tickets may be reserved by contacting Karin Swartz at kswartz1@ycp.edu.

Local residents can receive 10 free flowering trees or five crepe myrtles by joining the nonprofit Arbor Day Foundation any time during January. The flowering trees include two Sargent crabapples, three American redbuds, two Washington hawthorns, and three white flowering dogwoods. The free trees are part of the foundation’s Trees for America campaign. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between Friday, Feb. 1, and Friday, May 31, with enclosed planting instructions. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Members will also receive a subscription to the foundation’s bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and “The Tree Book,” which includes information about tree planting and care. To become a member of the Arbor Day Foundation and to receive the free trees, readers may send the minimum contribution by Thursday, Jan. 31, to Ten Flowering Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Ave., Nebraska City, NE 68410. Readers may also join by visiting www.arborday.org/January.
