Kelby is a lifelong York County resident, and has been a teacher for 25 years. Kelby committed his life to Christ at age twelve, when he “understood salvation, but not necessarily discipleship”. About 24 years ago, however, Kelby sought God more seriously when his life took unexpected and unwanted turns. Kelby recommitted his life to Christ and has been actively teaching Sunday School with middle school boys, young couples, and most recently with elderly shut ins at Hanover Hall Nursing Home. Experiences with Kelby’s wife and her long-term health problems, as well as recent events in his own life, have taught him more than ever about the endless love and mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ. Kelby is still learning how to keep “a right perspective on his life as a Christian as he walks life’s journey”. Kelby’s message will focus on how God uses suffering, hardships, and sorrows in our lives.

The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) has disposed of 2.62 tons of unused and expired residential medication collected via its Secure Medication Take-back Box Program, community drug take-back events and illegal drugs delivered by law enforcement for destruction. Currently, 18 York County police departments partner with the YCSWA to host medication take-back boxes in their police department lobbies. The Secure Medication Take-back Box Program provides a secure disposal option for unwanted medications from residential sources at no cost to the public or to law enforcement agencies. All York County police departments have
been invited to participate. Residents interested in dropping medication at a take-back box location should remove their personal information from containers before depositing them in boxes. Only residential prescription medications are accepted. Pet medications are also accepted. Pharmacies, hospitals and other commercial sources of medications are not eligible to participate. Syringes and other “sharps” are not accepted in this program. The public may deposit unwanted medications anonymously in the take-back boxes during lobby hours, except on holidays. Central York High School senior Caden McKinney and his dad, Mark McKinney, both enjoyed classes they have taken at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, York. So when it came time for Caden to think of something to do for his Eagle Scout Project, they decided that asking the staff members at the Horn Farm for suggestions seemed like a good idea - and it was. In 2009, Ben Dannels of Troop 49 constructed an observation deck overlooking the Horn Farm as his Eagle Scout Project. Horn Farm staff members suggested that perhaps Caden could convert the observation deck into an outdoor classroom. Caden designed the project and raised funds to pay for the materials needed. His primary method of fundraising was directly soliciting donations from friends and family. He began work in October 2019, first ripping off the old railings and power washing the old deck. With assistance from his dad, Caden built supports on the side of the deck as well as a metal roof. He built three benches inside the structure, which has capacity for 15 people. One minor hiccup arose when it
turned out that the roof did not quite cover the benches as hoped, so Caden decided to add roof extensions to ensure the benches were sheltered from rain. “The whole intent is to have it as a place for classes to go for shelter from the weather,” explained Mark. Caden completed the project in December 2019 and estimates that he spent approximately 109 hours from start to finish. A member of Troop 25, Caden has been involved in Scouts since he was in first grade. Pursuing the rank of Eagle Scout was something he had hoped to do for a long time. “I always wanted to have the accomplishment of Eagle Scout,” commented Caden. In addition to being actively involved in Troop 25, Caden spends time once a month volunteering at the York County SPCA. After graduation, he plans to take a gap year before attending college. To learn more about the Horn Farm, readers may call 717-757-6441 or visit https://hornfarmcenter.org/. According to Horn Farm executive director Alyson Earl, more than 2,500 people visited the farm in 2019, whether for a class or workshop, as a community gardener, to volunteer, or to attend the annual Pawpaw Festival or Heirloom Plant Sale.

The York Revolution and the other teams in the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB) have announced that they are seeking names for each of their ballparks’ automated ball-strike system (ABS) radar panels (“robo umps”). Through the Atlantic League’s partnership with Major League Baseball, the previously nameless panels made history in the 2019 ALPB season by electronically determining balls and strikes and relaying the calls to umpires wearing earpieces. The ABS system at PeoplesBank Park in York was the first electronic system to call balls and strikes in a professional baseball game, calling a strike on the first pitch of the 2019 ALPB All-Star Game in York last July. MLB later used the ABS in its Arizona Fall League and announced earlier this year that it will test electronic balls and strikes in spring training games this year. Each of the Atlantic League’s seven home clubs are inviting their local supporters to submit suggestions for names for their ABS radar panels on the teams’ social media channels. The teams will announce the winning names on Valentine’s Day, Friday, Feb. 14. The Atlantic League’s 23rd championship season will kick off on Thursday, April 30, when the Sugar Land Skeeters host the York Revolution and the High Point Rockers host the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Environmental Events Planned York College, 441 Country Club Road, York, will offer several environmental and sustainability events. All events will begin at 7 p.m. in the Weinstock Lecture Hall, located in the Willman Business Center, unless noted otherwise. The events are free and open to the public. “A Place at the Table” will be shown on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Fifty million Americans, including one in four children, do not know where their next meal is coming from. “A Place at the Table” aims to change how attendees think about the hungry. As part of the film, resources will be collected for the York County Food Bank. Hamil Pearsal will present “Is Greening Code for Gentrification? The Paradox of the Sustainable City” on Wednesday, March 11. Urban greening is intended to improve access to environmental amenities for underserved residents, but it can also lead to the displacement or marginalization of long-term residents. This talk will illustrate the dilemma of green gentrification and present a new approach to evaluate “just greening,” demonstrated through case studies in New York City and Philadelphia. “Making Insects: A Guide to Restoring the Little Things That Run the World” with Dr. Doug Tallamy will take place on Thursday, March 26. This program will be held in DeMeester Recital Hall, Wolf Hall. Tallamy will describe simple changes to the landscape and attitudes to support the insects that play an essential role in people’s lives. The event is free, but tickets are required and may be obtained by visiting www.ycptickets.com. “Wasted! The Story of Food Waste” will be shown on Wednesday, April 15. The film will explore the ways in which contemporary society contributes to climate change. For additional information on any of the events, readers may contact Allison Altland at 717-815-1354 or aaltland@ ycp.edu or visit www.ycp.edu.
