The 37th annual York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will step off at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, from Market and Penn streets. Live streaming of the parade will be on WRCTV sponsored by the Penn-Mar Irish Festival. Media sponsor CBS 21 and master of ceremonies Mike Gorsegner will announce parade entries at the Kinsley Grandstand on Continental Square. The Rev. Patrick J. “Paddy” Rooney will serve as grand marshal, leading the celebration of Celtic heritage. Rooney is a native of England, born and raised in London. He has Irish heritage as his paternal grandparents moved from Dublin to England between the wars to help build the city. While working with youth programs in England in the early ’70s, Rooney visited Northern Ireland at the height of The Troubles to help develop similar youth programs there. He completed his undergraduate studies at St. Mary’s College in London, studied philosophy at Catholic University of America, earned a master’s degree in counseling from Shippensburg University and completed his Lutheran studies at Gettysburg Seminary. He has been married to Sally for 40 years, and they have two grown children and two grandchildren. Rooney retired in February 2012, having served as the senior pastor of historic Christ Lutheran Church in York. He has worked extensively in the human services field, including serving

as special assistant in the Department of Welfare and as president and CEO of a large nonprofit entity serving the mentally ill and the developmentally disabled. For almost five years, he also served as the interim executive director for two local ecumenical agencies. He has served as a member and chair of the City of York General Authority. He is currently chair of the York County History Center and a member of the board of the Farm and Natural Lands Trust. He has also served on the Candidacy Committee for the Lower Susquehanna Synod as well as the Ecumenical Affairs committee and the Worship Committee. He is the author of several published sermons for three different groups. Rooney is a founding member of the Society of the Holy Trinity (STS), a Lutheran order and ministerium, which now numbers almost 300 pastors in the United States and Canada. He served as dean of the local chapter for 12 years and as general secretary for three years and in September 2015 was elected senior (general superior) of STS. He has taught widely across the U.S. and Canada at all 23 STS chapters. Rooney has also taught in the OLLI program at Penn State York and at several retreats throughout the U.S. and Canada. In his retirement, Rooney is an active member of the Rotary Club of York, and he served as president in 2016-17 club year. In Rotary District 7390, he served as

He completed all three levels of Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) and now serves as RLI faculty and as faculty at training for Mid-Atlantic presidents-elect. He was named RLI Faculty of the Year in 2019. Rooney is a major donor to the Rotary Foundation and a member of the Paul Harris Society. He has received the York Club’s President’s Certificate of Appreciation for Service Above Self and the Avenues of Service Citation. He currently serves as district governor for District 7390. The parade will be held in the event of favorable weather or light rain; there is no rain date. Nearly 100 entries are expected to participate, including bands, Irish dance groups, floats, antique and decorated vehicles, clowns, individuals, family

groups, organizations and media entries. Entries will be judged and prizes awarded. The parade draws an estimated 10,000 people downtown each year. The parade is organized by the York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee Inc., a volunteer-led, not-for-profit organization, and is funded by corporate sponsors, entry fees and fundraising activities planned throughout the year. To register a parade entry, become a sponsor, donate or purchase a T-shirt, readers may visit www.YorkSaintPatricksDay Parade.org. The deadline for entries is Monday, Feb. 17. The Mill of Red Lion, 327 E. Broadway, Red Lion, will celebrate the Valentine’s Day weekend on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15, with a “Fill the Van With Cans” event to benefit Community REACH in Red Lion. The event will be held during business hours, which are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. The goal is to fill the business’s delivery van with canned goods, nonperishable foods, and personal care items to be distributed to families in the Red Lion area. People who donate will receive a voucher for discounts to be used at The Mill on Feb. 14 and 15, with set discounts for various levels of giving, such as five, 10, 15, or 20 items. Some exclusions apply, and details can be found inside the store. On both days local artist Robert Clark will be on hand doing portraits and caricatures. Entertainment and trivia with Music by Mark will also be offered both days.

The York Youth Revolution (YYR), the youth group at Faith United Methodist Church (UMC) in Hallam, invites the community to an evening of food, fun, and fellowship at its eighth annual Sweetheart Dinner and Dance at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 15. The dinner portion of the event will take place at Faith UMC, 126 E. Market St., Hallam. Reservations are required, and interested individuals may call 717-252-2539 to let organizers know how many guests will be attending. Admission will be by donation. Chicken Parmesan, spaghetti, rolls, dessert, and beverages are on the menu for the evening. After dinner, people may walk or drive across the street to the Hellam Fire Company, 163 E. Market St., for the dance, which is set to begin at approximately 7:15 p.m. Live music will be performed by York County-based band The Modern Age. “We are so honored and grateful for the band to be playing for us,” said YYR

youth leader Joe Bachman, adding that The Modern Age has been a big draw for attendees at the past several dances. “The band was organized in the 1970s and still has a big following. As soon as people hear Modern Age is playing (at the dance), the phone starts to ring,” Bachman continued. The annual Sweetheart Dinner and Dance, which has become a Valentine’s Day weekend tradition for some local residents, serves as a fundraiser for the YYR’s summer mission trips. This summer, members of the youth group will be serving with the Group Workcamp Initiative that will be hosted at Eastern York High School from Sunday to Saturday, June 21 to 27. At the workcamp, teenagers and adults who are members of church youth groups from throughout the country will volunteer their time to repair homes of elderly, disabled, or lowincome residents in the community. Projects will range from exterior painting to wheelchair ramp construction and more.

Colorado-based Group Mission Trips facilitates the workcamps so that volunteers can provide home repairs to individuals and families in need. Approximately 450 campers from all over the United States are signed up for the camp, Bachman said, up from 180 campers at the inaugural Eastern York Workcamp Initiative in 2018. “We will be working on 60 to 80 homes within a 25-minute radius of the Eastern York High School,” explained Bachman. “We are still looking for applications from residents that need free home repair.” Residents within the radius in York and Lancaster counties may apply for assistance by calling 717-252-2539 and leaving a message. Workcamp volunteers pay registration fees that are used to cover costs for food, insurance, and some building materials. Fundraisers like the Sweetheart Dinner and Dance then help to cover the rest of the costs for the home improvement projects for those in need. “Our hope and prayer is a great time for all,” shared Bachman. “If it’s a couple or single (person) that can’t afford an expensive evening out, then this community event is for them. We also hope and pray that those that can give will (do so) to help this community outreach event.” The YYR meets on Sundays at 6 p.m. at Faith UMC. Students in grades nine to 12 from the community are welcome to attend.

The Modern Age will perform live music at the York Youth Revolution’s annual Sweetheart Dinner and Dance on Feb. 15. The evening will include dinner at Faith United Methodist Church followed by music and dancing across the street at Hellam Fire Company. PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT. You who made me see everything and showed me the way to reach my ideal, You who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You who are in all instances, of my life, with me, I, in this short dialogue, want to thank You for everything and confirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great material desires may be. I want to be with You and my loved ones in Your perpetual glory. Thank You for Your love towards me and my loved ones. Amen. Persons may say this prayer 3 consecutive days without asking your wish, after the 3rd day your wish will be granted, no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted. Thank you. KMS READ YOUR AD THE FIRST WEEK IT APPEARS

Weis Markets has partnered with the Northeastern Senior Community Center in Mount Wolf to help with the Meals on Wheels deliveries. Leigh Lauer, Weis marketing event ambassador, will deliver meals on the fifth Wednesdays of the month. Approximately 15 seniors are visited and checked on and then given a nutritious hot meal and a cold one for the next day.

The York Professional Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 627 showed its continued support for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) as members held the annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign in 2019 to raise funds to help transform the lives of children and adults with muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and related muscledebilitating diseases. The firefighters continued a 65-year tradition of giving to the MDA community. York Local 627 raised more than $5,002. Funds raised through York Fill the Boot events in 2019 will help the MDA save lives and lift those up in need by providing the MDA with vital resources to advance its mission of driving innovations in science and care for the neuromuscular community. Contributions have helped fund groundbreaking research and life-enhancing pro-

grams such as state-of-the-art support groups and Care Centers, including the MDA Care Center at the Penn State Children’s Hospital in Hershey. Contributions also help send several local children to MDA summer camp at Variety Club Camp at no cost to their families. The partnership between the IAFF and MDA began in 1954 when the IAFF committed to support MDA until a cure is found, and the organization’s commitment to MDA has continued. As MDA’s largest national partner, it has raised more than $650 million for the MDA to date. Today, the partnership is finding new ways to save lives by working to expand newborn screenings in the U.S. with Pompe disease or spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), so that they can be immediately eligible for lifesaving and life changing therapies.
