Chorale Releases Studio Recording The Susquehanna Chorale recently released a studio recording featuring repertoire from its spring 2018 concert series, titled “Roots & Wings.” The Susquehanna Chorale, founded in 1981 by conductor Linda L. Tedford, is a nationally recognized adult chamber ensemble of 35 singers chosen by audition. “Roots & Wings” celebrates the breadth of human experience and how relationships that are rooted in faith, family, and friendship may inspire people to achieve their dreams. Fauré’s “Cantique de Jean Racine,”
American spirituals, and Rhonda Sandberg’s modern arrangement of Bach’s “Come, Sweet Death” pay tribute to the historical roots of faith. The enduring roots of human relationships are the focus of “Jenny Rebecca,” Bob Chilcott’s setting of Christina Rosetti’s poem “Remember Me,” and Eriks E∫envald’s “Only in Sleep,” based on Sara Teasdale’s poem about childhood friends returning in her dreams. The roots of the United States’ musical heritage are honored with songs from
early America, including “Nelly Bly” and a men’s arrangement of “Aura Lee” as well as Copland’s “Long Time Ago” and “I Bought Me a Cat.” The program also includes Sean Kirchner’s “Unclouded Day.” “Roots & Wings” is the chorale’s eighth nationally distributed recording. Three of the chorale’s recordings were considered for Grammy nomination. “Roots & Wings” is available for purchase by calling 717-533-7859 or visiting www.susquehannachorale.org.

Tiramisu is an Italian layered dessert, and the name translates to “pick me up” or “cheer me up.” Requiring no baking at all, it can be an easy treat to prepare. This recipe for tiramisu is courtesy of the American Dairy Association. Tiramisu (Yield: 9 servings) 6 egg yolks 1 cup sugar 1 1/4 cup mascarpone cheese 1 3/4 cup heavy whipping cream 2 (12-ounce) packages savoiardi lady fingers 1/2 cup cold espresso or strong coffee 1/4 cup coffee-flavored liqueur (optional) 1 tablespoon cocoa for dusting Instructions: 1 - Combine egg yolks and sugar in the top of a double boiler, over boiling water. Reduce heat to low and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly. This is the sabayon. Remove from the heat and whip yolks until thick and lemon colored. Add mascarpone to whipped yolks and beat until combined. 2 - In a separate bowl, whip cream to stiff peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream in the mascarpone-sabayon mixture and set aside. 3 - Mix the cold espresso with the coffee liqueur, and dip the lady fingers into the mixture just long enough to get them wet. Do not soak them. Arrange the lady fingers in the bottom of an 8-inch square baking dish (or 6 by 9 inches). Spoon half the mascarpone cream filling over the lady fingers. 4 - Repeat the process with another layer. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Dust with cocoa before serving.
York Catholic High School recently received two donations in support of its “Grow Today, Impact Tomorrow” Capital Campaign. The Knights of Columbus 10474 Father Gerrity Council of Holy Infant Parish in Manchester gave $10,000, and the Knights of Columbus 6353 of St. Joseph Parish in York donated $25,000. The campaign is
designed to provide resources for needed renovations and improvements to the high school with a focus on academic, student life, and extracurricular experiences. Among the projects are renovated classrooms with facilitywide air-conditioning; upgrades and modernization to science labs and science lecture
rooms; facility-wide safety enhancements, including an elevator; the creation of a new Student and Media Center, which will also house a College and Career Readiness Center, student center, renovated chapel, and upgraded lobby; and the installation of a turf athletic field that will be used by 12 athletic teams.
Mark Andrasi (far left), Knights of Columbus 10474 Father Gerrity Council of Holy Infant Parish trustee, and Robert Farabaugh (second from right), Knights of Columbus Grand Knight, presented a check for $10,000 to Katie Seufert (second from left), York Catholic High School principal, and Isabella Kepner, York Catholic Student Council president. The funds were donated in support of York Catholic’s “Grow Today, Impact Tomorrow” Capital Campaign.

Libraries are filled with books for adults and children. But libraries have even more to offer than books, making them an invaluable resource for the entire community. The following are just a handful of the many great reasons to visit one’s local library. For one, reading may help improve long-term mental health. A 2001 study from researchers at Case Western Reserve University found that patients with Alzheimer’s disease were less active in early and middle adulthood in regard to intellectual, passive and physical activities than people who did not have the disease. Young adults and middle-aged men and women who visit their local libraries and check out a good book might decrease their risk
for cognitive decline later in life. Also, reading can improve a person’s vocabulary, even as he or she gets older. Reading for pleasure as a child has long been linked to helping young people age 16 and under develop strong reading and math skills. But a recent study from researchers at the University of London that examined how the vocabularies of more than 9,400 people developed between the ages of 16 and 42 found that vocabulary continued to improve long after teenage years. By continuing to read books from their local libraries into adulthood, adults can further develop their vocabularies. In addition, libraries provide free entertainment. Libraries are home to thousands of books, but that is not all people can find at
their local branch. Newspapers, magazines, CDs and DVDs are some examples of the forms of entertainment available at local libraries. Better yet, such entertainment is free to card holders. Finally, libraries offer ageappropriate programs for children. Parents are urged to visit their local libraries, which are often home to many programs that can inspire children to read and foster their creativity. The scope of child-friendly programs at local libraries may range from sing-along sessions for toddlers to group art programs for preschool-age children to STEM-based programs for elementary and secondary school students. The local library is an invaluable resource than can benefit people of all ages.
