Roth Preap, administrative coordinator, who has been with the organization since August 2018, answered the following questions: What is the mission of York Youth Symphony Orchestra (YYSO)? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? The YYSO creates a unique opportunity for elite youth musicians to learn a challenging repertoire with peers, perform in a variety of venues, and expand their perspectives of what it means to be a musician. Every year we achieve our goals by accepting over 100 musicians from grades nine to 12, representing 14 different schools and homeschooled students from York and Adams counties, to perform in three concerts per season at various locations in York County. We offer our students the opportunity to progress in their instruments through sectionals with professional musicians, through ensemble opportunities, and by offering summer camp and college scholarships.

The YYSO is composed of a small team of employees: the interim conductor, Brian Buterbaugh; the facility manager, John Beck; and the administrative coordinator, Roth J. Preap. All of our other volunteers are parents, students, and any persons interested in helping in the organization.

DMVA Offers Assistance New Ag Business To Veterans Service Slated The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) encourages veterans to review their benefits with a professional to ensure they are receiving the benefits they have earned through their service and sacrifice. All veterans should occasionally check with a veterans service officer to see if changes in a veteran’s circumstances or changes to benefit policies may have modified the programs a veteran may be eligible to receive. Safeguarding military paperwork, especially the DD-214, which is used to verify military service, is an important first step. The easiest way to manage military documents is to make sure they are filed in a safe place immediately when an individual leaves the military. Veterans often find that filing their documents for free at their county courthouse of record is an easy way to secure them until needed, which can often be decades into the future. Anyone needing assistance locating their military documentation can call 717-861-8910 or email RA-REQ@pa.gov. Another key step is for veterans to apply for federal health care and state benefits by visiting their local county

director of veterans affairs or area accredited service organizations to take a look at what benefits they may be eligible for and to get help applying for those benefits. A complete list of county directors and their contact information can be found at www.dmva.pa.gov. In addition to connecting with a county director or an accredited service organization, veterans should sign up for the DMVA Veterans Registry, a free tool that electronically delivers timely information about the many state benefits, programs and services available to veterans. Veterans, family members and people who work with veterans can sign up at www.register.dmva.pa.gov. Veterans and their dependents should never pay for help to apply for veterans’ benefits. There are about 200 veterans service officers in Pennsylvania who work with organizations such as the DMVA, county Veterans Affairs offices and several veterans service organizations. They are experienced, trained professionals who provide veterans with advice and assistance at no cost.

Under the Ground is an annual subscription-based service and network through Penn State Extension that provides businesses with a comprehensive picture of their retail storefront from the eyes of peers and marketing specialists. The program is open to all small agricultural businesses within southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania that have a retail space. Businesses can become part of the peer network. Through direct observation as secret shoppers, participants will get to the root of how different agricultural retail spaces are designed to enhance the customer experience. Each business involved will receive quarterly reports detailing feedback from both fellow business owners and industry specialists. Businesses will be provided with quarterly reports that will assess their displays, signage, customer service, and more. In addition to observing other retail spaces and receiving quarterly feedback, businesses will build a peer network that connects regularly through a closed social media group, networking events, and tours. Exclusive discounted

tickets will be available for special events curated around enhancing retail effectiveness. The test pilot will take place in 2019 to 2020. The focused area will be available to the following 19 counties in the southeast/southcentral quadrant of Pennsylvania, including Adams, Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin, Delaware, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northhampton, Perry, Philadelphia, Schuylkill, and York. Eligible business categories include on-farm market, coffee roaster, bakery, miller, creamery, garden center, butcher/meat market, specialty oils, craft candy, homemade soaps, florist, apiarist, maple syrup producer, herb producer, wool/yarn, and canned goods. The program subscription will be from Wednesday, May 1, 2019, to Thursday, April 30, 2020. Readers may contact Tanya Lamo tel20@psu.edu or 717-3346271 with questions. Readers may register at https:// extension.psu.edu/under-the -ground by Monday, April 15, for an early bird discount.
