The Cultural Alliance of York County will host YorVoice, the fifth annual music showcase, on Saturday, March 30, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. YorVoice is a friendly competition that aims to bring the community together to enjoy listening to musicians. It strives to inspire York pride, celebrate the arts, highlight local talent, and raise awareness for the Cultural Alliance’s Annual Campaign. In the 2018 competition, local acoustic duo the Beaver Street Brethren was crowned the live band champion and singer Scarlet Rose was crowned the vocal champion. Both will return in a combined opening performance to introduce the competitors. Cal Weary will be YorVoice’s
master of ceremonies along with his house band, Boompop Coalition. Celebrity judges this year include country singer-songwriter Kayla Kroh, local news personality Ali Bradley, Beaver Street Brethren member Andrew Gobel, Studio 117 co-founder Lee King, and York County Senior Honors Choirs director Randy Yoder. YorVoice 2019 performers will include the following: The York College Division of Music has put together a band of music industry students for YCRB - York College Rock Band. Led by Dr. Shawn David Young, they will perform “Money for Nothing” by Dire Straits. York Suburban Middle School student Teagan Tatcher will make her debut at YorVoice and will perform an a capella version of “Lost Boy” by Ruth B.
We encourage civic and fraternal groups, schools, churches, scouts, and other local organizations to submit news releases of general interest to the majority of our readership. Primary consideration is given to dated articles of an informative nature--activities and events of local interest sponsored, presented, or planned by area organizations and institutions. Related photographs of good quality are encouraged also, but complete picture identification must be included. Undated articles of general interest are used as space permits. All articles must contain a contact name and telephone number.

York College has created the Weinstock Student Venture Investment Fund (SVIF) thanks to a gift from Norm Weinstock, a 1968 graduate of York Junior College and a York native. Weinstock and his wife, Sheila, have given to organizations including York College. In the fall of 2011, they used a charitable gift annuity and pledge of cash to fund the Weinstock Auditorium in the college’s Willman Business Center. In addition, Weinstock facilitated York College’s $500,000 proposal to the NASDAQ Foundation, which resulted in the creation of the NASDAQ Trading Laboratory. More recently, Weinstock decided he wanted to do something additional for the College after meeting with Dr. James Norrie, dean of the Graham School of Business. Weinstock now lives near Boston, and a friend of his is involved with the Martin Trust Center for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Entrepreneurship, which
provides the expertise, support, and connections MIT students need to become effective entrepreneurs. Weinstock provided a $100,000 gift to create the Weinstock Student Venture Investment Fund at York College. SVIF will provide micro-investments up to $5,000 for selected student- or alumniled start-ups. Each year, a competitive process will be used, including the involvement of an external investment board of established entrepreneurs, to select winning ideas. Funds are advanced as a loan with expectations of future returns and are associated with access to entrepreneurial coaching, mentoring, and business development support. Weinstock has chosen to remember York College as he celebrates his 80th birthday in March, asking family and friends to donate to the SVIF rather than purchase a gift.
York College president Pamela Gunter-Smith (left) welcomed Norm Weinstock (right) to the college at a York Junior College reunion in October 2018. Thanks to a gift from Weinstock, York College has created the Weinstock Student Venture Investment Fund.

David Surgenor, who dedicated nearly 30 years to enhancing motorcyclist safety, has retired from his position as the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) national director of quality and outcomes. Surgenor, who lives in York, helped shape rider training programs across the country. Surgenor became a Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor for the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program in 1989. He earned his chief instructor certification in 1994 while working for Millersville University. He then joined the MSF national staff in 1999 and became the state coordinator of the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program. In 2014, Surgenor was promoted to national manager of MSF training systems. The following year, he was promoted again, this time to national director of quality and outcomes. Under Surgenor’s leadership, the Pennsylvania Motorcycle Safety Program won the national Outstanding State Program Award 13 times. In 2006, he was awarded the Motorcycle Safety Foundation’s Award of Excellence. Three years later, Surgenor was presented with The Chairperson’s Award by the State Motorcycle Safety Administrators Association (SMSA). The SMSA executive committee stated that besides serving as an outstanding state coordinator for Pennsylvania, Surgenor also mentored staff in other states and in training programs across the nation, helping to develop professional workshops and learning centers. Surgenor will remain in Pennsylvania, close to family and friends. The MSF aims to promote safety through rider training and education, operator licensing tests and public information programs. The MSF works with the federal government, state agencies, the military and others to offer training for people of all skill levels so riders can enjoy a lifetime of safe, responsible motorcycling. Standards established by the MSF have been recognized worldwide since 1973. The MSF is a nonprofit organization. For safety information or to enroll in a RiderCourse, readers may visit www.msf -usa.org or call 800-446-9227.
