The 10,000 Acts of Kindness event will be a multicultural, multifaith, nonpartisan and all-inclusive unity festival celebrating the growth York has made over the past 50 years. The celebration will be held on Sunday, June 30, in Penn Park. One-and-a-half miles of tables will be set up in an attempt to win the Guinness Book of Records’ title for the longest table in the world. To reserve a seat at the

table, a person must perform an act of kindness for someone else. Big Brothers Big Sisters provides children facing adversity with professionally supported one-to-one relationships intended to change their lives for the better, forever. Older mentors are matched with at-risk youths and participate in enriching activities of their choosing. For more information, readers may visit www.bbbsyorkadams.org.

Susquehanna Heritage will host works from Columbia artist Diana Thomas through June at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The collection will showcase her journey to paint 55 paintings of the Lower Susquehanna, one painting a week for more than a year as part of her project “Current Color - A Year on the River.” Also as part of the project, Thomas wrote a weekly journal entry that portrayed life lessons found in her body of work. The “Current Color” paintings are mostly acrylic on canvas, and a few are mixed media. The journal entries will be presented alongside each week’s piece. Partway through the project, Thomas’ daughter lost her long battle with substance overuse. Soon after, the same tragedy befell her daughter’s significant other, leaving behind their then 8-year-old son. In response, Thomas created pieces called “River of Tears” and “Even the Moon Cried.” Thomas will also lead Creative River, a riverfront art series that will offer journaling, sketching, and painting experiences in small groups for people age 15 and older. Session one will take place on Saturday, April 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. and will give instruction and suggestions for writing about the river and nature. Participants will receive a writing

Friends Of The Library Plan Book Sale Books lovers of all ages are invited to stock up on their favorite reading materials and sweet treats at the Friends of the Kreutz Creek Library’s semiannual book and bake sale on Friday, April 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sale, featuring at least 20,000 gently used books, will be held at the Hellam Township Public Works Building, 44 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam, located next to the library. Audio books, DVDs and CDs will also be offered for sale. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted. Book sale committee chair Elizabeth McKonly, who is co-president of the Friends along with Betty Bell, explained that the books will be separated into categories and each section will be clearly labeled. “We will have nonfiction, fiction and kids’ books. Everything will be divided,” said McKonly, noting that categories will include history, biography, business, cookbooks, gardening, holidays, self-help, travel and religion. Books will be displayed on more than 50 tables. “Certain authors - like Danielle Steel - are all boxed together,” she added. “We keep the boxes open under the table and replenish to keep the tables full.” Homemade baked goods, hot dogs and beverages will be offered for sale on both days. Members of the community are invited to donate items for the sale by bringing them on sale days to the library, which is located at 66 Walnut Springs Road, Hellam. Cookies should be individually wrapped in plastic bags if possible, and baked goods with peanuts and gluten-free items should

be clearly labeled. According to McKonly, most of the books being sold have been donated by the public. The rest have been gleaned from the library’s collection. “We have a shipping container that the Friends bought six or seven years ago from proceeds from our sales, and this is where we store (book donations),” she explained. “All year long we sort them and box them up so they are ready for the spring and fall sales in April and September, (respectively).” She noted that book donations can be placed in a bin at the library. “If (people) have a lot of books, they should call ahead and we will arrange to meet them and put the books into the container,” she said. Unsold items will be donated to charity. “This year, we are giving them to the Mennonite Central Committee,” noted McKonly. “We have donated to different (charities) in the past. They will come get them right after the sale on Saturday. This is the first year for MCC (as beneficiary).” Proceeds from the book and bake sale will help pay the operating costs of the library, as well as provide funding for special programs and guest speakers. Those interested in supporting the library and joining the Friends are invited to attend a meeting of the group, held

on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the library. “A lot of people are saying libraries are not relevant, but they are now more than ever,” McKonly remarked. “A lot of people come in to use the computers; a lot of job applications are done online. And we have a lot of programs for kids and teens, including our Summer Reading Program. It makes for a busy library.” The Kreutz Creek Library, which operates out of a repurposed 1,250-square-foot FEMA trailer that was used during Hurricane Agnes, celebrated its 40th anniversary in February. Plans are underway for the construction of a new library building. To raise funds, a countywide capital campaign by York County Libraries is taking place from April to June. For more information, readers may visit https://campaign.yorklibraries.org. More information about Kreutz Creek Library activities and the book sale is available at www.facebook.com/KreutzCreek Library or by calling 717-252-4080.

Lori Garling, artistic director, who has been with the organization for more than 20 years, answered the following questions: What is the mission of Greater York Dance? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? We provide positive, healthy, and enriching dance experiences to the people of the southcentral Pennsylvania region. Students of all levels, ages, and aspirations may choose programs of interest according to their dance priority with no regard to their ability to pay. Approximately how many staff members and volunteers are involved? 50 to 100.

Local York last year? Yes. What are the organization’s goals for 2019? We host the annual “Nutcracker” and “Hip Nut” productions for the holiday season. DancExperience is an after-school program and a unique way that we “dance it forward.” Students ages 7 to 12 receive training from our professional faculty and experienced student leaders. Students are introduced to dance and movement free of charge; the experience often finishes with an onstage performance. Role modeling empowers young people to make smart choices that put them on a better path in life. This occurs naturally in this program as advanced students of the school, members of the National Honor Society of Dance Arts, often assist in teaching. We invite children to learn about the fascinating, creative world of dance every chance we have. Where will funds raised through Give Local York be directed? Dance scholarships.

Second Saturday Program Slated York County History Center, 250 E. Market St., York, will present its Second Saturday program, “The Souls of Black Baseball,” on Saturday, April 13, at 10:30 a.m. The program will feature Dr. Robert Allen as he shares memories of

Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center (PIRC)

Courtney Lewis, director of communications, answered the following questions: What is the mission of Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center (PIRC)? How does the organization work to achieve its goals? On June 6, 1993, the Golden Venture ship ran aground with approximately 286 Chinese nationals aboard. Within two days, these men and women were transported by the INS to the county jail in York, Pa., and other detention facilities across the country. Fleeing political persecution and coercive population control policies, these individuals seeking asylum had no voice in a complicated, American immigration legal system. The York community responded to the indefinite detention of the Golden Venture passengers with impassioned legal advocacy and a vigilant spirit of community support. Their outrage fueled a shared commitment to the words inscribed on the Supreme Court entrance: Equal Access to Justice. From this resolute belief in justice, the Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center (PIRC) was formed with the mission of providing equal access to justice to those who have no voice. The Pennsylvania Immigration Resource Center works to protect immigrants’ rights to freedom and opportunity in the United States and save the lives of the most vulnerable immigrants. PIRC provides free, effective legal representation, legal counsel, education, and advocacy to help immigrants obtain or protect their legal status.
