Rotary Club Awards Grants To Nonprofits Uptown York Rotary Club (UYRC) awarded a total of $3,500 in grants to four nonprofit organizations to help support the York community. This is the first time in the club’s eight-year history that grant applications were solicited from the public. Susquehanna Service Dogs (SSD) was awarded $500 toward the education of trainers and handlers in York County. SSD provides service dogs for people with mobility problems, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, hearing impairment, and other conditions. Some dogs act as facility dogs while others provide seizure response, in-home service, or companionship. Bell Socialization Services was the recipient of a $1,000 grant to stock overthe-counter medications and diabetes monitoring kits to help alleviate general physical ailments for adults, children, and

infants in residence at Bell Family Shelter. Having cough or cold medicine available for an adult going to a job or housing interview can make a significant difference for the families at the shelter. Edgar Fahs Smith STEAM Academy, part of York City School District, received $1,000 toward an outdoor classroom designed by the students. The classroom will be filled with native plants that will be transferred to community gardens in York city. Students who attend the STEAM Academy live in urban settings with limited access to hands-on gardening and sustainable living opportunities. Through participation in this project, students will be educated on creating and maintaining a healthy community for both the native wildlife and residents of the city of York. See Grants pg 3

Libraries Offer Food For Fines Program York County Libraries will make a trade with library members who have late fees through its Food for Fines program. Through Friday, May 31, York County Libraries will reduce a library cardholder’s late fees by one dollar for each nonperishable item the cardholder donates at one of the libraries. The food drive provides members with a way to erase their late fees and help feed hungry community members at the same time.

Food collected during the month will be distributed to area food banks and organizations across York County. All food donations should be nonperishable items in cans, boxes, bags, or pouches. In the past, individuals have donated items such as cereal, soup, rice, beans, macaroni and cheese, juice, peanut butter, and canned meats like tuna, chicken, and salmon that do not require refrigeration prior to opening. Church member Leroy Wheeland will cook and prepare the barbecue at the church. Dinners will be sold on-site at the front of the church. Those who purchase tickets in advance may pick up their meals around the back of the church. Advance purchases can be made by calling 717252-2539 and leaving a message.

Inside each meal will be an invitation to attend Springtime in the Park, which is geared toward people of all ages. Attendees should bring lawn chairs or blankets for seating at the outdoor event. Admission will be free, but donations will be accepted by members of the youth group. White, who has played in several country bands throughout his lifetime, is a retired high school teacher. He taught ninthand 10th-grade American history and 11th-grade economics and government at Eastern York High School for 37 years. “There will be a mix of all kinds of music, including originals,” said White, who is a member of Fairmount UMC. “I am more country than anything else, (including) older country, like Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings.” White explained that the concert will take place outside the

church fellowship hall. “There is a fellowship hall building, but (we also have) an outdoor picnic grove with a bandstand,” he noted. White said he is no stranger to outdoor venues. “I’m used to playing anywhere,” he stated. “I do a great deal of entertaining singing in churches and at banquets, weddings, for senior citizens and at little clubs. Sometime people sit and listen (to my music) and sometimes they can’t resist dancing.” During the concert, a food truck will offer snacks for sale, including hot dogs, french fries, popcorn and chicken. The YYR will sell baked goods, including whoopie pies and cookies. Proceeds will go to the YYR mission trip this June to Racine, Wis. “Wisconsin holds a special place in our hearts because last summer they had over 50 people come on a coach bus to Wrightsville to help with our Eastern York work camp,” noted Bachman. “We felt like we should go back to Wisconsin this year and pay them back.” Bachman, who will speak briefly about the mission trip during the concert intermission, noted that YYR takes part in an annual mission trip to help people in need. “It’s work suitable for teenagers,” he said. “It’s building handicapped ramps, painting and building steps. We put skirting around the bottom of trailers. It’s anything the kids are capable of doing with parental supervision.” In the event of rain, the concert may be canceled. Cancellation information will be posted on the YYR Facebook page, which can be found by searching for “York Youth Revolution YYR (York, PA).” The pig roast will be held rain or shine.

Grant Helps Fund EMS Provider Merger In an ongoing effort to create a uniform EMS system that provides high-quality service to all areas of York County, the York County Community Foundation’s (YCCF) WellSpan EMS Fund has awarded a grant of $33,000 to three local nonprofit EMS providers to create efficiencies and optimize service delivery. The three organizations in the project are York Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Inc., Grantley Fire Company, and West York Ambulance. The grant supported the hiring of a legal consultant to perform

an analysis of the organizations, the market, infrastructure, and more, resulting in a recommendation for merging that was then taken to each organization’s managing board for review and a vote. The grant also supports the execution of the recommendations, resulting in the creation of First Capital Community Transport Partners as the first step toward regionalizing and coordinating the provision of emergency and medical transportation services. For the past five years, York

Regional EMS, Grantley Fire Company, and West York Ambulance have been in discussions about coordination and consolidation to create the foundation on which a sustainable, broadbased, uniform EMS system could be established. With the grant from YCCF’s WellSpan EMS Fund, the three nonprofit organizations aimed to create one that is viable, high-quality, and quick to react to and resolve service area challenges now and in the future. Established by WellSpan Health with the goal of creating a more coordinated, regional EMS system that effectively meets the needs of York County communities, the YCCF WellSpan Emergency Medical Services Fund provides grants for purposes such as professional services, start-up resources, and/or the development of new and innovative collaborative projects in order to meet the emergency medical needs of the community. Since 2014, the fund has awarded more than $200,000 in grants. More information can be found at www.yccf.org.

The York County Community Foundation’s (YCCF) WellSpan EMS Fund awarded a grant of $33,000 to York Regional EMS, Grantley Fire Company, and West York Ambulance to fund an analysis of their operations and more and their subsequent merger to form First Capital Community Transport Partners. Taking part in the check presentation were (from left) Donald “Butch” Potter Jr., president of the York Regional EMS board of directors; Joe Myers, operations manager for Grantley Fire Company and EMS; Joe Stevens, EMS chief at York Regional EMS; Lise Levin, vice president of community investment at York County Community Foundation; Rod Drawbaugh, interim president of First Capital Community Transport Partners; and Dennis Reigart, president and CEO, West York EMS.

Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) is a global network of dancers. It fulfills its mission of dance education through scholarship auditions, master classes, alumni services, educational and outreach activities, performances, and films. It focuses on the support and development of dancers ages 9 to 19 and identifies promising young dance talent. In 2010, YAGP was the subject of a documentary film, “First Position,” which followed six YAGP participants on their journey to YAGP’s finals in New York City. The Singer Family Prize honors high school teachers who have made a lasting impact on the personal and academic growth of their students. According to Morningstar’s nomination letter, Morningstar took Carl’s Honors World Cultures and Advanced Placement (AP)

European History classes, as well as three independent study classes advised by Carl. Morningstar also noted that Carl was her adviser for her seminar and two dual enrollment courses. In addition to her role as a teacher, Carl is the adviser for the high school’s National Honor Society and Model United Nations Club. Morningstar was a member of both of these groups during her time at West York. Award recipients are invited to Rochester to be recognized at the university’s awards ceremony on Saturday, May 18, and the
